The most-cited articles in pediatric imaging: a bibliometric analysis.

The number of citations that an article has received reflects its impact on the scientific community. The purpose of our study was to identify and characterize the 51 most-cited articles in pediatric imaging. Based on the database of Journal Citation Reports, we selected 350 journals that were considered as potential outlets for pediatric imaging articles. The Web of Science search tools were used to identify the most-cited articles relevant to pediatric imaging within the selected journals. The 51 most-cited articles in pediatric imaging were published between 1952 and 2011, with 1980-1989 and 2000-2009 producing 15 articles, each. The number of citations ranged from 576-124 and the number of annual citations ranged from 49.05-2.56. The majority of articles were published in pediatric and related journals (N.=26), originated in the USA (N.=23), were original articles (N.=45), used MRI as imaging modality (N.=27), and were concerned with the subspecialty of brain (N.=34). University College London School of Medicine (N.=6) and School of Medicine University of California (N.=4) were the leading institutions and Reynolds EO (N.=7) was the most voluminous author. Our study presents a detailed list and an analysis of the most-cited articles in the field of pediatric imaging, which provides an insight into historical developments and allows for recognition of the important advances in this field.

Public engagement workshop: How to improve medicines for older people?

Public engagement in medication management has become more and more important in promoting population health. A public engagement workshop attended by 78 members of the geriatric community, family carers as well as professionals from academic research, industry and regulatory agencies entitled 'How to improve medicines for older people?' took place on the 2nd July 2013 at the University College London (UCL) School of Pharmacy. The main aim of the event was to provide a dynamic environment for information exchange and to identify ways of improving current and future geriatric drug therapy. The day opened with presentations from UCL School of Pharmacy researchers on the use of medicines at home, formulations, administration devices and multi-component compliance aids (MCAs) whilst a representative from UCL Interaction Centre gave an insightful presentation on human errors and resilience strategies regarding medication use. These opening presentations encouraged participants to share their own experiences as well as initiating a lively debate. Following the plenary presentations, the workshop was divided into 8 groups for parallel discussion session. These opinion sharing sessions witnessed fruitful discussions between patients, carers and researchers. The day closed with a panel session of representatives from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the Geriatric Medicines Society and Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). Participants were encouraged to voice their questions, concerns and recommendations about medications. The main concern expressed by both patients and carers from the workshop were (but are not limited to) formulation changes, MCA accessibility difficulties, interactions of different medicines, carers' concerns with the administration of medicines and not having enough knowledge of services provided by community pharmacists i.e. medicines use reviews (MURs) or new medicine service (NMS). Overall, this workshop created a useful forum for members of the geriatric community, their carers as well as research and industrial professionals to have an input in the improvement and management of geriatric drug therapy and this event also provided an excellent opportunity for the researchers to share the latest research innovations with attendees.

Pamela Davidson has devoted a lifetime to chronicling and elucidating the work of Viacheslav Ivanov — a task impossible for any scholar who is not a polymath in their own right. It demands not only a command of a wide range of modern languages (the works in this bibliography appeared in various countries in eleven different languages) but, at the very least, a serious reading knowledge of Greek, Latin and Hebrew. It also requires insight into the history of thought, comparative religion, literature and art and a certain familiarity with the contemporary cultural scene in Russia, Germany, Italy, France, England and the nascent state of Israel. To revert to Isaiah Berlin’s seminal terminology, Ivanov was too wily a fox to be fairly assessed or represented by any hedgehog. The self-effacing, labour-intensive publication we have here, like Davidson’s previous Ivanov bibliography of the critical literature, published in the United States in 1996, is an essential guide to his work — in a sense still more so, since it provides a clearly drawn map of the scholar-poet’s life in literature. It is also a monument to Anglo-Russian co-operation. Davidson supplies an enlightening introduction and a chronological across-the-board survey of publications listed according to genre. Her editor, Iurii Lappo-Danilevskii, provides an opportunity to check on individual works, including poems, listed in alphabetical order and preceded by a clear explanation of the principles according to which it was drawn up. Both scholars co-operated on the invaluable index of proper names, including dedicatees. The work is all the richer for having enjoyed a previous life on the internet during which contributions and corrections were added; it is a hallmark of the compilers’ scrupulous modesty and dedication that, even in this lovingly produced printed version, they appeal for further reader input. The book is modest, too, in size and price. In spite of its international significance, it is particularly welcome in that it is published in Russia and in Russian, precisely because the renaissance of interest in its subject began outside Ivanov’s native land. As the recent internet publication of Andrei Shishkin’s illustrated lecture at the Russian Christian Humanist Academy in St Petersburg and the ensuing debate chaired by Aleksandr Ermichev shows (), Ivanov is still today considered — even by cognoscenti in Russia — a difficult and elitist writer for the few — albeit an intensely interesting one. At a conference at IMLI (Moscow) on Aleksandr Blok in October 2012, the opinion was voiced that ideas which shimmer ‘behind seven REVIEWS 879 seals’ in Blok’s poetry are often elucidated with greater transparency and depths in Ivanov’s writing. Viacheslav the Magnificent does indeed hold the key to many mysteries of Russian Symbolism, and this wonderful little book provides scholars with a precise guide as to how best to use it. Peter Lang, Oxford, Bern and New York, 2012. xi + 231 pp. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. £40.00 (paperback). One of the features most likely to strike anybody perusing the current repertoire of Russian theatres is the continued prominence of the plays of George Bernard Shaw. By contrast, contemporary British theatre-goers are less likely to be familiar with his works; as Olga Soboleva and Angus Wrenn suggest in their introduction, although he currently ‘enjoys a positive reputation’, he is nonetheless ‘generally regarded as being a little too remote in period […] to be considered an altogether twentieth-century figure and a major influence on upon the drama of the present day’ (p. 1). Appropriately enough, then, Soboleva and Wrenn devote the sixth and final chapter of their study to Russian productions of a number of Shaw’s lesserknown dramas of the 1920s and 1930s, as well as detailing the...

Personality and Place in Russian Culture—or Not

Simon Dixon, ed., Personality and Place in Russian Culture: Essays in Memory of Lindsey Hughes. 435 pp., illus. London: Modern Humanities Research Association for University College London School of Slavonic and East European Studies, 2010. ISBN-13 978-1907322037. $20.00. This collection of articles is a tribute to memory and rich intellectual legacy of late Lindsey Hughes (1949-2007), professor of Russian history at London University's School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies (SSEES, now part of University College London [UCL]). Hughes is probably best known for her pioneering biographies Sophia, Regent of Russia, 1657-1704 and monumental Peter Great: A Biography, as well as for her interest in material as a primary historical source--particularly architecture but also art, clothing, fashion, icons, and ritual. (1) As Robin Miller-Guilland writes, In her many shorter articles, we find a tireless enthusiast for generally disregarded corners of history ..., multivalent, disparate strands that make up texture of human culture (22). These have been cleverly distilled by editor of volume under review, Simon Dixon, Hughes's colleague at SSEES and a leading scholar of Catherinean Russia, as a focus on personality and place, reflecting Hughes's interests in kaleidoscopic variety of individual motivations and shifting meanings attributable to particular settings (13). Dixon's characterization of Hughes's scholarship as a self-denying empiricism and concept-driven (5) may also be applied to works in Personality and Place, which do not attempt large-scale statements about Russian or forefront theoretical or methodological problems but focus on the shifting meanings attributable to particular settings and on specific materials under consideration. That said, it is not easy to identify major themes or issues that tie together collection of articles by 17 authors on a variety of subjects and periods; volume also includes an article by Hughes on Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul and a bibliography of her main works. To some extent, Personality and Place may be taken as a cross-section of contemporary scholarship in English on Russia before Soviet period, with most attention given to 18th century. The book also appeared as a special issue of The Slavonic and East European Review, and it retains look and vestigial traces of a journal (e.g., reference to this journal, 14). (2) Indeed, majority of readers will most likely refer to individual contributions in volume rather than read it in linear fashion. To a greater or lesser extent, all entries deal with personality and/or place but with no common understanding of what exactly these mean. That said, we may tentatively break subject matter down into topics concerning material and print culture, historical sites, expeditions and geography, examinations of discourse in historical context, biographical studies, literary depictions of self, and tributes to Hughes's life and work. I will say a few words about each contribution, by group. Dixon's introduction to collection offers a beautiful evocation of social and cultural world in which Hughes grew up and describes her intellectual formation in postwar Britain. James Cracraft continues with a personal memoir of Hughes, centering on her work on Peter I; Hughes's exhaustive research in archives, libraries, museums, and architectural sites, in his words, yielded an unprecedentedly detailed, complex, and often dark portrayal of great tsar.... Her book leaves its readers, at Peter's death, with a Russia that is exhausted, confused, and fearful--not unlike immediately post-Soviet Russia in which she conducted much of her research (17). Following Hughes's lead, Sergei Bogatyrev and Simon Franklin take up what we may classify as problems in material and print in order to explore images of Russian rulers. …

Resistance, Rebellion and Revolution in Hungary and Central Europe: Commemorating 1956

The fiftieth anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 produced a multitude of conferences both in Hungary and elsewhere, and the volume currently under review is the product of one of them, held in September 2006 at University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies. Many of these conferences and the publications that surrounded the anniversary generated more heat than light, for they suggested limited innovation in thinking about the Revolution since it had previously been the subject of major commemoration on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary in 1996. Like the anniversary in general, this volume is a missed opportunity to ask new and important questions about the Revolution. It, and the conference on which it is based, promised a new approach to the Revolution, by situating it in a broad context—both spatially and temporally. On the one hand, it sought to examine 1956 in the light of a long history of popular protest in Hungary, which has had a decisive impact on the country's political culture. On the other hand, its intention was to examine Hungarian popular protest in a broader European context, thus potentially rescuing this history from relative obscurity, and demonstrating what the study of Hungary can reveal about broader European trends. The editors are to be congratulated for their vision in attempting this enterprise even if they have not succeeded; as co-editor, Martyn Rady acknowledges in his concluding essay: ‘It nevertheless became clear that contexts, parallels and common-denominators were more elusive than the organizers had hitherto imagined’ (p. 349). Consequently, the volume is an uneven collection of revised conference papers, and personal recollections of the Revolution, which hang uneasily together. Some— such as the pieces by the historian, former conservative politician, Foreign Minister, and Hungarian Ambassador to Washington, Géza Jeszensky, and by political scientist turned centre-right Hungarian member of the European Parliament, György Schöpflin—combine normative political judgement with analysis. The piece by Krisztián Ungváry on the actions of the internal security services in Hungarian universities and research institutes under Kádár, given its focus on naming prominent intellectuals who collaborated, rather than a critical analysis of how the authorities actually operated, seems to be a quasi-academic complement to the interest of Hungary's tabloid press in personalities from the realms of sport and entertainment who spied on others for the state. Because of the lack of an overarching conception for the volume, the pieces that deal with protest in Hungary prior to the advent of state socialism, or with revolution in other contexts, sit uneasily within the volume.

Obituary

Eustace Cornelius, who was Librarian of the Royal College of Surgeons of England for 18 years died on 11 August 2005, aged 80. He was born on 23 May 1925 in Naini Tal, India where his father was a civil engineer. When people commented on his middle name, he always remarked that he was christened ‘Hope’ because he was such a sickly baby that he was not expected to survive. He attended King's School, Canterbury and Clare College, Cambridge (MA in Modern Languages). In 1947 he spent a year at University College London's School of Librarianship, during which time a fellow student comments, ‘his humorous companionship did a lot to lighten the weight of a very dreary and boring course of instruction’. He joined the staff of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1948 as assistant in the library. He became assistant librarian in 1951 and sub-librarian in 1965. As deputy to William Le Fanu, he played an enthusiastic part in building up the collection in the 1950s and 60s and succeeded him as Librarian in 1968. Always keen to foster support for the collections in his care, he maintained friendly relationships with Council members and staff throughout the College and, while never obsequious, was always gracious and attentive to important visitors, however inconveniently timed their appearance. He contributed scholarly articles on medical history to the College Annals. For many years he was Chairman of the College staff club and, as he had a great love of the game, was a keen supporter of the annual Council versus staff cricket match. He was awarded the McNeill Love medal on 12 March 1981 after 32 years service, and retired in 1986, earlier than expected, as an unsuccessful operation to restore a detached retina resulted in the loss of vision in one of his eyes. It was typical of him that, when he retired, he invited his entire staff as his guests to Council lunch. For several years afterwards he continued to come into the Library to compile entries for Lives of the Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons and was renowned for writing a reasonably lengthy entry from quite minimal information! Highly committed to inter-library co-operation, he was honorary secretary of the medical section of the Library Association for 8 years in the late 1960s, served on several other bodies and was on the international organizing committee of the 5th International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML) in Tokyo in 1985. The Congress focused largely on information transfer and technology, bibliographic control and co-operation in services, and there were 571 contributions from 64 countries. It was at this Congress that a group of European medical librarians, Eustace among them, met together to found what was to become the European Association for Health Information and Libraries (EAHIL)—a body which has done much to foster medical library co-operation throughout Europe. He was a keen gardener who never missed the Chelsea Flower Show (an ex-employee remarked that he was the only boss he'd ever had who insisted on a month off every year to prune his roses!). A lover of music, especially opera, he was an enthusiastic Wagnerian. Other pleasures were good food and wine, convivial company and travel. He is remembered with great affection by all those who worked with him, especially for his unfailing kindness and dry, but gentle, sense of humour. Many senior figures in the health library field have reason to be grateful to him for his encouragement when they were first starting out in the profession. He was a librarian of the old school and regarded computers with deep suspicion—the fact that he managed to retire without ever having had to use one afforded him gleeful amusement.

The Phoney Peace. Power and Culture in Central Europe 1945-49 by Robert B. s> Pynsent (review)

REVIEWS I65 translation by Humphrey Tonkin. It provides details of daily life under the Nazis that have not frequentlybeen illuminated, especially the actions of the Arrow Cross; and it details how one family managed to escape deportation and death through both adhering to strict principles and deft improvisation- primarilythrough avoiding capturewith forged documents. It is, at bottom, a record of the impressions and even prejudices of its author: 'The Russians were a generally a good lot [. . .] and there was no reason to fear them, because they were decent guys, even if sometimes they were quick to anger' (p. 20I); the French in Hungary 'were devilishly smart and full of ideas' (p. I72). There are some outright historical errors, such as Soros's statement that Adolf Eichmann 'learned Yiddish and Hebrew' (p. I35) and that the attempted assassinationof Hitler on 20 July I944 'showed that the Germanpeople themselveshad had enough of the Hitler regime'(p. I23). Yet despite its occasional errors of fact, Maskerado is a fascinating glimpse of Hungarian Jewry as it was hunted and trapped by the Nazis and their accomplices. Above all Soros revealsthe bizarreentanglement of Hungarians andJews: A new decree from the Arrow Cross government required spouses of Aryans to move to the ghetto. In Hungary therewas a high level of assimilationand over time this had resultedin a great many mixed marriageswhere one partnerwas Christian and the other a converted or active Jew. The Jewish partner was known in Hungarian as an 'Aryan-spouse'(4ja-pada).Even Mrs Horthy was a descendant of such a Jewish-Gentile marriage, and so was the infamous anti-Semitic politician Bla Imredy. Up to now, members of mixed marriages had been exempted from the anti-Jewishregulations, but this now changed. New tragedies ensued. Sometimes , out of solidaritywith a marriage partner, the Gentile partner moved to the ghetto too, but therewas also a wave of suicides.(pp. I63-64) The Soros family succeeded in 'dancing around death,' but the vast majority of their co-religionists faced extermination. The fact that such a 'dance' was possible, however, makes Hungarian Jewry one of the more intriguing components of East Central European Jewry before the Holocaust. Publishedby University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies it is based on a conference held in I998 called 'Another Transition. Politics and Culture in Central Europe, I945-49'. The organizer of the conference and editor of this volume has assembled an impressive and genuinely international team of authors. The voices of young and more established scholars from the region itself can be heard within the essays the books contains, alongside the work of North American and WesternEuropeans. The volume concentratesnot on Central and Eastern Europe, but on 'Central Europe' which is defined essentiallyas consistingof Germany, Polandand the formerterritoriesof Austria-Hungary. This ensuresthat statessuch asAustriaand what laterbecame WestGermany are given consideration, creating opportunities for comparisons to be developed. They are rarelydeveloped within the essaysthemselves,however, as most tend to concentrate on one aspect of an individual country. Furthermore little is done by the editor to tie the essays together in the introduction. This reviewer was left wondering whether the term 'Central Europe' was the best term to describe the region in the period between I945 and I949 given that most of the region was underRed Army occupation, part of the Soviet-sphereof influence and where, by I949, most of the stateswere ruled by dictatorships that sought to transform the...
