Dr Joseph Dudley 'Benjy' Benjafield: Microbiologist, soldier and Bentley Boy racing driver.

Dr Joseph Dudley 'Benjy' Benjafield qualified from University College Hospital Medical School, London in 1912. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I and was in charge of the 37th Mobile Bacteriological Laboratory serving with the British Egyptian Expeditionary Force when the Spanish flu struck in late 1918. He observed the features and clinical course of the pandemic and published his findings in the British Medical Journal in 1919. On return to civilian life, he was appointed as Consultant physician to St George's Hospital, Hyde Park Corner, London where he remained in practice for the rest of his career. He was a respected amateur gentleman racing driver frequently racing at the Brooklands circuit from 1924 after buying a Bentley 3-litre and entering the Le Mans 24 h race seven times between 1925 and 1935, winning in 1927. He was one of an elite club of young men known as The Bentley Boys and went on to become a founding member of the British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) in 1927. He rejoined the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II, serving briefly again in Egypt. He died in 1957.

The road less travelled…

In the autumn of 1969 I went for an interview at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, having recently graduated in Psychology and Social Anthropology from Bedford and Birkbeck Colleges at the University of London. Having been asked if any of my family had been doctors, my father (no), grandfather (no), anyone? (no), I was sent a short note rejecting my application. So fired was I by the perceived unfairness of this rejection, that I applied to several other medical schools, having not previously been all that keen on studying Medicine anyway. University College Hospital Medical School (UCHMS) sent me a letter saying I was on their waiting list as they were awaiting the ‘A’ level results that year, but I phoned them and said I really couldn’t wait around for these results so could they kindly give me an immediate answer. To my surprise they said, yes, and so I ‘fell’ into medicine. Not that I had never thought about it. My grandparents had come to the UK from Poland, Russia and the Ukraine at the end of the 19 th century, and I had thought about becoming a doctor at the age of 8, and of being the first person in my family to enter university. I had applied from school in North London to Cambridge to read Medicine, been accepted, then switched at the last minute with an Open Exhibition to St. Catharine’s in Natural Sciences. I then left after a few months as my father had died and I felt compelled to live in London, and then changed yet again to Psychology at the only colleges in London which had places mid-term. I was not very good at that age at taking decisions.

The Flame Photometer as Engine of Nephrology: A Biography

In the 1940s, the flame photometer made possible for the first time relatively simple and quick measurements of sodium and potassium in serum and urine. During World War II, it unexpectedly fell into the hands of John P. Peters of Yale University, who sought to understand water and electrolyte physiology and apply such knowledge to patient problems. Pupils and young associates of Peters would seed the early nephrology divisions and training programs in the United States; the flame photometer was essential to their work and that of their trainees, both Americans and international visitors. Hyponatremia and the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion became the "attribute" disorders of nephrologists. Invention of a microflame photometer fostered the revival of micropuncture and transport studies. In the 1960s, the flame photometer was linked to Leonard Skeggs' sequential automated analysis system, leading to enormous numbers of routine measurements of electrolytes. The growing number of nephrologists, then based mostly at teaching hospitals, thus found plentiful instances of sodium and potassium abnormalities to address. The autoanalyzer also catalyzed use of the anion gap, another emblem of nephrology in its early decades. Not only ideas and theories, but also the usually invisible machinery, enable the growth of a knowledge base and formation of a scientific discipline or medical specialty. Of course, the flame photometer did not itself shape the agenda of nephrology, but it allowed the most influential group of progenitors and their progeny to explore normal function and bring a strongly physiologic imperative to their daily work with patients.
