UNRAVELING CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS IN ACADEMIC PAPER: A CASE STUDY OF 3rd YEAR ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITAS AHMAD DAHLAN

Despite living in an era of increasingly advanced digital technology, students still face significant challenges in academic writing, particularly in developing knowledge and writing skills of academic papers at a college level. This study aimed to highlight challenges faced by students in academic writing activities and how they solved the problems. The subjects of this research were five 3rd year students of the English Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. The data of this study were collected by using observation, interviews, and focus group discussion (FGD) techniques. NVivo software was employed as the data analysis tool to make it easier for the researchers to determine the theme of the interview results. The findings show that the most challenging aspects of academic writing are the lack of vocabulary and the lack of skills in writing academic papers. The third year students of the English Department of Ahmad Dahlan University faced challenges in academic writing due to their lack of vocabulary and skills, however they use digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to overcome this problem.

Decoding IELTS writing performance: Grammatical Clauses mastery by Universitas Ahmad Dahlan students

Indonesian learners of English produced ungrammaticalities in their writing for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and faced complicated writing score descriptors for self-evaluations and improvements. These problems were observed among students at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan during their preparatory course for IELT. To address this issue, this study focused on identifying some rules in grammar, the grammatical and ungrammatical clauses based on subject-verb (S + V) structures in their writing performances and measuring the proportions of the two clause types in accordance with the performance’s score variation. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed. To do so, the study conducted archival research by retrieving data from the teacher's course documents. The archived handwritten writing performances were transcribed manually into digital texts. It employed syntactic analysis to classify the clauses as either grammatical or ungrammatical. It converted the numbers of each clause type per performance into percentages for comparison, and grouped them according to the different scores as the variable. The results showed that the participants produced predominantly simple grammatical clauses to minimize failures when generating more complex structures. To achieve the minimum score of 6 in the writing section, the proportion of grammatically correct and incorrect clauses should be above 47% and below 53%, respectively. These findings offer valuable insights into predicting scores, especially concerning the dimension of 'grammatical range and accuracy in the writing assessment, which benefit both learners and educators.

Developing Project-Based Learning-Based eBook "Critical and Creative Reading" to Improve Students' Critical Thinking Skills

This study aims to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of the development of electronic-book-based Critical and creative reading project to improve students ' critical thinking skills. This study was developed based on the Research and Development (R&D) model by Brog and Gall. The stages conducted in this study were (1) needs analysis, (2) planning, (3) development, (4) product validity, (5) revision, (6) response test, (7) revision, and (8) final product development. The product validity was assessed by two experts in teaching materials and graphs as the validators. The result of the validity assessment was then processed using the five-scale formula. The revision was done to meet the validators’ suggestions. Response test was conducted with students of the Indonesian Language Education Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. The test results were processed using the AIKEN V formula. A revision was then made to meet students’ suggestions obtained from the test. At last, a trial was carried out to measure the effectiveness of the product in order to become the guideline to develop the final product.The research findings were as follows: (1) the lecturers and students in learning critical and creative reading in higher education expected teaching materials that were easily accessible, electronic, and collaborated with one of the learning models so that they were able to measure the success rate of the critical and creative reading process; (2) product development was carried out through the activities of designing materials, models and evaluations that were developed in a product, as well as designing electronic books in accordance with the results of the needs analysis; (3) the appropriateness test results by the material experts obtained 3.40 in the good category and the layout expert scored 4.65 with a very good category. The results of the response test for students after being calculated with the Aiken V formula obtained a score of 0.85 – 1.00 with a very good category. The results of the experimental test showed that the posttests of the control and experimental classes obtained results of 0.001, which showed <0.05, so H0 was rejected. Students' critical thinking skills after the treatment were significantly different. Therefore, the teaching material developed was effectively used to improve students' critical thinking skills.

The Implementation of Creative Teaching in Literature Class in English Education Department Universitas Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta

A lecturer or teacher is required to be very creative in order to make students motivated to learn. This study aims to explain the creative teaching that can be applied in literature classes in the English Education Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. Moreover, this study also will explore the improvement of students’ motivation by implementing creative teaching in literature classes of English Education Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. This research is a descriptive study. Observation is the initial activity that will be carried out in this study, and the data from this study were collected through a process of observation to find out its usefulness to students’ motivation for creative teaching in literature classes. The expected outcome of this research is that creative teaching can be applied well in the literature class at the English Education Department of UAD. Also, the positive benefits that can be learned from the implementation of creative teaching are the availability of materials in the form of podcasts and various activities in the teaching of literature class such as a gallery walk, creative writing, jigsaw, group discussions, role play, and others. Students’ motivation is pretty good for the implementation of these activities.

Qualitative Study of Anxiety Facing Block Examinations Among Medical Students at Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan

Background: Medical students face examinations more frequently compared to students from other faculties. Examinations are one of the causes of anxiety commonly experienced by medical students, leading to both physical and psychological responses. Effective coping mechanisms in response to stressors are necessary for medical students as a defense mechanism. Objective: This research aims to explore the causes of exam anxiety, the contributing factors to anxiety and the coping mechanism used by medical students. Methods: The research adopts a qualitative descriptive design, the sample consist of active medical students from Faculty of Medicine, Ahmad Dahlan University who have faced block examinations. Sample selection was done using a test- anxiety inventory, with participants chosen from each academic year and divided into focus group discussion (FGD) sessions. The FGD results were subsequently analyzed using content analysis in the form of research problem categories. Results: The discovered data consists of the main research issues, which are student’s anxiety when facing block exams, the factors causing anxiety, and student’s coping mechanisms. Conclusion: The high anxiety group portrays block exams as a subjective matter and tends to lead to anxiety, students in low anxiety group predominantly utilize problem-focused coping mechanism.

Comparison of Morphometric and Genetic Characteristics of Giant Freshwater Prawn (Macrobracium rosenbergii) Si Jawa with Bengawan Solo and Siratu Populations

The Giant freshwater prawn (GFP) Si Jawa population is a new population of GFP from Bengawan Solo domesticated by BPTPB Cangkringan. The good morphometric and genetic characteristics of Si Jawa have never been compared with those of Bengawan Solo, or with cross-breeding populations such as Siratu. This study was to compare the morphometric and polymorphic characteristics of the DNA of three populations. Sampling of GFP was carried out at UKBAP Samas. Characterization was carried out at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. Each population took three male and three female individuals as samples. DNA polymorphisms were determined using ISSR 5 and ISSR 8 primers. Data on interpopulation morphometric characters were compared with the Kruskal Wallis test. The results showed that for the characters Cephalothorax:abdomen and carapace:abdomen was highest in males of Si Jawa and the lowest respectively in males of Siratu and Bengawan Solo. Carapace:rostrum were not significantly different (P>0.05). DNA polymorphisms from highest to lowest was Bengawan Solo (75%), Si Jawa (71.43%) and Siratu (68.75%). The results showed that Si Jawa was a morphometrically and genetically good population.

Media relations of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta in maintaining image during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 has affected the education in Indonesia, including the institution of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) Yogyakarta. The existence of educational institutions requires existence to gain the trust of the community. Public relations become an element that plays a role. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of media helps the public in obtaining and conveying information, including media coverage. Therefore, it is important for university public relations to have a good relationship with the media, considering that the media is a source of information providers. This study aims to determine the implementation of media relations carried out by UAD Public Relations in maintaining its image during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. The goal is to know and understand the implementation of media relations applied, starting from the research stage, preparation, communicating a program, and evaluations. This research method uses a qualitative with a case study approach and was analyzed using John E. Marston's R-A-C-E Formula. Based on data, at the research stage the implementation is not maximized, so that offline activities have no substitute activities. At the action stage, media relations activities include preparation of public relations writing skills, release materials, and advertising publication materials. Stages of communication conducting media relations activities, namely making press releases and advertising publications. In addition, to build a good relationship with the media, UAD Public Relations maintains personal contact with media partners, provides souvenirs, and Feast Day gifts. Finally, at the evaluation stage, UAD Public Relations monitors publications and program evaluation.

End-User Assessment of the Graduate Performance From Islamic Bank Department, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan: A Survey

It is undeniable that external factors drive the development and growth of the Islamic bank industry in Indonesia. One of them is the supply of Islamic Human Resources (IHR) from various universities (PT), both private and public, that have opened Islamic banking study programs. However, the increasing availability of IHR from PT still needs to improve, including; link and math curriculum, absorption of graduates in the Islamic bank industry, competence, and performance of PT graduates. Therefore, this study aims to assess the performance of graduates of Islamic banking study programs who have worked in the Islamic banking and finance/islamic banking industry with an approach of technical competence, conceptual competence, and interpersonal ability. This type of research is descriptive quantitative. The sample is all alums of the Islamic banking study program who have worked in Islamic banks and finance/islamic for 2019-2021 with snowball sampling techniques. The sampling method uses questionnaires distributed to company leaders. The findings showed that most alums of Islamic banking study programs who work in the financial industry show high technical skills, conceptual abilities, and interpersonal skills.

The Relationship between Self-Confidence and Public Speaking Ability of Students of the Faculty of Education Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta

This research was conducted at the Faculty of Psychology, Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between self-confidence and the ability to speak in public (Public Speaking). The population in this study were students with characteristics including students of the Faculty of Education, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta, Class of 2002, 2003, 2004 (Semester III, V, VII), and Male and Female Students. The sampling technique used was Cluster randon sampling, namely students of the Faculty of Education semester V and semester VII of Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta while the remaining one semester, namely third semester students were sampled during the trial. The data analysis technique used in this study is Pearson's Product moment correlation. The results showed that there is a very significant positive relationship between self-confidence and public speaking ability, meaning that the higher the self-confidence, the higher the ability to speak in public while the lower the self-confidence, the lower the ability to speak in public.

Experiences from Muhammadiyah on Practices of Multicultural Education: Analysis Through Bourdieu's Concept of Social Capital

This article aims to answer the question of whether a multicultural perspective has been implemented in higher education. Muhammadiyah, an Islamic organization, has a strategic role in building and developing multicultural education in Indonesia. Ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity is critical for Muhammadiyah Education, so a multicultural perspective becomes the center of attention. Until now, the education practice organized by Muhammadiyah tries to practice a multicultural perspective so that it does not reject students from non-Muslim religions, diverse ethnicities, and varied cultures. All students are treated equally without being differentiated because they come from different religions and do not even have a Muhammadiyah background. This research is an analytical qualitative method with case studies approach. Therefore, teachers or lecturers, in providing knowledge and transferring values, need to understand clearly the diversity of students or students they face. Hence, a multicultural perspective becomes one of the requirements for lecturers or teachers to understand. This article used the perspective of social capital theory from Pierre Bourdieu to analyze the capital used in multicultural education at Muhammadiyah Universities, such as Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.

Pengembangan e-LKM Terintegrasi Literasi Numerasi untuk Meningkatkan Berpikir Kritis pada Materi Analisis Vektor

Students' low reading interest greatly affects learning outcomes in Vector Analysis class. This is due to the rare interaction between students and learning resources in class. To increase student activity in reading and understanding the concept of vector analysis material, an e-LKM product is needed. This study aims to develop Student Worksheets (LKM) in electronic form that is integrated with numeracy literacy which can be used for learning vector analysis courses by knowing the validity and practicality of procedures so that the use of these e-LKM can improve students' critical thinking. This development research uses the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). Furthermore, the evaluation stage is carried out at each stage to improve the e-LKM that is made. The subjects were 21 students in semester VI of class C Mathematics Education FKIP Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. The research data was obtained by collecting questionnaires from material experts, media, and students' responses to the practicality of the media being developed. From the results of the questionnaires distributed, the average questionnaire from the two material experts and media experts showed excellent criteria with a mean score of 4.611 and 4.47 respectively. The results of student responses to product use show excellent criteria with a mean score of 4.27. Based on these results, the e-LKM that is used is proven to be valid and practical.

ANALISIS TECHNOLOGICAL PEDAGOGICAL CONTENT KNOWLEDGE (TPACK) CALON GURU BIOLOGI UNIVERSITAS AHMAD DAHLAN

Global challenges demand the availability of human resources (HR) who master science, technology, and art (IPTEKS). The acceleration of educational change is oriented towards the use of technology, especially the integration of learning. Related to these changes, professional teachers are required to have competency in line with existing developments with TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) skills for the realization of quality education. This study aims to analyze the TPACK ability of prospective biology teachers. The research was conducted using a survey method in the form of self-report-measure. The research sample was 150 biology students in semesters 7 and 8 using a random sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was developed from the TPACK questionnaire created by Schmidt et al (2009) and Sahin (2001). The instrument has been tested for validity with a p-value < 0.05 and the reliability of Cronbach's Alpha > 0.05. 0.70. After the data was analyzed, the TPACK abilities of prospective biology teachers were grouped into 5 levels, namely very good, good, medium, and low. The results showed that the preservice teachers in Biology education Universitas Ahmad Dahlan Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) skills obtained an average of 3.51-4.50 including having good TPACK abilities. Kata kunci: Analysis; Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK); calon guru

An Analysis of Grammatical Errors Made by the Students of English Literature Department

This research aims to identify grammatical errors made by the students of the English Literature department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and to describe the process of the occurrence of grammatical errors. This research is a descriptive study that uses a qualitative method. The data are the writing assignments of second-semester students of the English Literature department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan of the 2018 - 2019 academic year. The researcher read the writings of the students, then wrote and classified the errors made by the students into types of errors due to interlingual and intralingual transfers. This research uses the descriptive analysis method to describe the types of errors. The results show that the types of errors due to the interlingual and intralingual transfer are omission errors, addition errors, misordering errors, and misformation errors. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for minimizing grammatical errors in the English teaching and learning process, especially for writing in English. The results can also be used as a basis for compiling course materials, writing textbooks or modules, especially for making exercises that focus on errors that often occur, to prevent similar errors that will occur in the future.

Investigating Anxiety in Speaking among EFL Students: A Qualitative Study

This study investigates the causes of anxiety in speaking among EFL students and provides solutions to overcome them. A total of 33 students from the sixth semester of the English Education Department at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan participated in this descriptive qualitative research by completing questionnaires and interviews. The results revealed that nervousness, trembling, and shyness are causing anxiety among students in speaking English, and preparation, confidence, peer-seeking, and effort can help overcome speaking anxiety. The implication of the study suggests that language educators should be aware of the causes of anxiety in EFL students and provide appropriate solutions to help them overcome their speaking anxiety. Limitations of the study may include the relatively small sample size and the fact that the study only focused on sixth-semester students in one particular department at a single university. Therefore, the findings may not be generalizable to other populations or contexts. For future research, it would be useful to include a more extensive and diverse sample of participants from different levels of language proficiency and different educational backgrounds. Additionally, incorporating other data collection methods, such as observation or focus groups, could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to speaking anxiety among EFL students. Finally, exploring the effectiveness of different interventions or strategies to reduce speaking anxiety could be an interesting avenue for future research.

Epidemiological Analysis of Mental Health Disorders in Patients at Psychiatric Hospitals in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Background: Mental disorder is a condition of decreasing all psychiatric conditions that result in deviant behavior. WHO estimates that one in eight people in the world lives with a mental disorder in the world. The COVID-19 pandemic that has occurred since 2019 has had an impact and has had a major impact on the mental health of people in the world and in Indonesia. The Special Region of Yogyakarta is the province with the highest cases of mental disorders in Indonesia based on the results of the 2013 and 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) surveys. The purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiological description of mental disorders per classification in inpatients at Mental Hospitals in the Special Region of Yogyakarta in 2019-2021.Subjects and Method: This study used a quantitative descriptive method, sourced from secondary data from Mental Hospitals in the Special Region of Yogyakarta for the period 2019 - 2021. The population in this study was 4,413, with a total sample of 3,919. The inclusion criteria are data of inpatients with mental disorders recorded in the recapitulation of medical records of inpatients at the Mental Hospital for the period 2019 to 2021. Exclusion criteria are incomplete data. The sampling technique used is total sampling. The person variable consists of a classification of mental disorders, age, gender, education level, occupation, marital status, health insurance, and end of care. The instrument used in this research is a dummy table. Data from this study were analyzed descriptively by looking at the frequency and proportion of each variable studied.Results: The results showed that the highest disease classification was F20-F29 (schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, and delusional disorder) 76.72%. Most of them were aged 25-44 years (55.60%), male (61.55%), graduated from high school or equivalent (46.54%), did not work (66.90%), and were not married (57.29%). Most of them use national health insurance (62.95%), end of treatment with doctor's approval (97.86%), and length of stay ≤ 42 days (95.1%). Most of the patients came from Sleman Regency (37.25%) and from urban areas (71.37%).Conclusion: Most patients with mental disorders are in productive age. People with mental disorders are an economic burden that must be borne by their families and the government. The Relationship of Breakfast Habits, Coffee Consumption, and Sleep Duration with Obesity Incidence in University Students

The increasing prevalence of adult obesity in Indonesia from 14,8 to 21,8% in 2013-2018 impacts in a higher incidence of various non-communicable diseases. Lifestyle changes such as sleeping habits, breakfast, exercise, and coffee consumption can escalate the risk of obesity. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between breakfast habits, coffee consumption, and sleep duration with the incidence of obesity among Ahmad Dahlan University students. This study was an observational study with a cross-sectional design with a purposive sampling method. The subjects are 459 students of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. The research instrument used was a self-administrated online questionnaire that asked about the habits of breakfast, sleep, and coffee consumption. Anthropometric data were obtained from the results of the latest anthropometric measurements of each research subject. The research data were processed using statistical applications using the chi-square test with a significance value of p <0.05. Results: Breakfast habits, frequency, sources, timing, and the menu was not related to nutritional status (p> 0.05). Other health habits such as sports habits and sleep duration also did not found any significant relationship with nutritional status (p> 0.05). However, coffee consumption was related to nutritional status (p = 0.001). This relationship was found in female subjects (p = 0.014). The conclusion of this study is that breakfast habits and sleep duration are not related to the nutritional status of students, while coffee drinking habits have a relationship with the nutritional status of students, especially female students.
