Search for Synchrotron Emission from Secondary Electrons of Proton–Proton Interactions in Galactic PeVatron Candidate HESS J1641–463

HESS J1641−463 is an unidentified gamma-ray source with a hard TeV gamma-ray spectrum, and thus it has been proposed to be a possible candidate for a cosmic-ray (CR) accelerator up to PeV energies (a PeVatron candidate). The source spatially coincides with the radio supernova remnant G338.5+0.1 but has not yet been fully explored in the X-ray band. We analyzed newly taken NuSTAR data, pointing at HESS J1641−463, with 82 ks effective exposure time. There is no apparent X-ray counterpart of HESS J1641−463, while nearby stellar cluster, Mercer 81, and stray-light X-rays are detected. Combined with the archival Chandra data, partially covering the source, we derived an upper limit of ∼6 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1 in 2–10 keV (∼3 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1 in 10–20 keV). If the gamma-ray emission is originated from the decay of π 0 mesons produced in interactions between CR protons and ambient materials, secondary electrons in the proton–proton interactions can potentially emit synchrotron photons in the X-ray band, which can be tested by our X-ray observations. Although the obtained X-ray upper limits cannot place a constraint on the primary proton spectrum, it will be possible with a future hard X-ray mission.

High energy gamma-ray sources in the VVV survey - II. The AGN counterparts

ABSTRACT We identified Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) candidates as counterparts to unidentified gamma-ray sources (UGS) from the Fermi-LAT Fourth Source Catalogue at lower Galactic latitudes. Our methodology is based on the use of near- and mid-infrared photometric data from the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) surveys. The AGN candidates associated with the UGS occupy very different regions from the stars and extragalactic sources in the colour space defined by the VVV and WISE infrared colours. We found 27 near-infrared AGN candidates possibly associated with 14 Fermi-LAT sources using the VVV survey. We also found 2 blazar candidates in the regions of 2 Fermi-LAT sources using WISE data. There is no match between VVV and WISE candidates. We have also examined the Ks light curves of the VVV candidates and applied the fractional variability amplitude (σrms) and the slope of variation in the Ks passband to characterise the near-infrared variability. This analysis shows that more than 85 per cent of the candidates have slopes in the Ks passband >10−4 mag/day and present σrms values consistent with a moderate variability. This is in good agreement with typical results seen from type-1 AGN. The combination of YJHKs colours and Ks variability criteria was useful for AGN selection, including its use in identifying counterparts to Fermi γ-ray sources.

Unveiling the nature of the unidentified gamma-ray sources 4FGL J1908.6+0915e, HESS J1907+089/HOTS J1907+091, and 3HWC J1907+085 in the sky region of the magnetar SGR 1900+14

ABSTRACT Supernova remnants (SNRs), star formation regions (SFRs), and pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are prime candidates for Galactic PeVatrons. The non-thermal high-energy (HE, ε > 100 MeV) and very high-energy (VHE, ε > 100 GeV) γ-ray emission from these sources should be a promising manifestation of acceleration processes. We investigate the possibility to explain the HE and VHE γ-ray emission from the sky region of the magnetar SGR 1900+14 as a signature of cosmic rays accelerated in above-mentioned sources. To this end, we simulate the γ-ray emission from the extended Fermi-LAT HE source 4FGL J1908.6+0915e, the extended VHE H.E.S.S. source candidate HOTS J1907+091, and the point-like HAWC TeV source 3HWC J1907+085, which are spatially coincident with the SNR G42.8+0.6, the magnetar SGR 1900+14, and the star-forming region W49A. The simulations are performed within the hadronic and leptonic models. We show that the observed γ-ray emission from the region of the magnetar SGR 1900+14 can, in principle, include contributions of different intensities from all three types of (potentially confused) sources. The considered in detail cases of a magnetar-connected but still undetected SNR and a PWN are the most promising ones, but with a serious requirement on the energy reserve of radiated CR particles – of the order of $10^{51}d_{\textrm {10kpc}}^{2}$ erg for sources at a distance of d ∼ 10 kpc. Such energy reserve can be provided by the magnetar-related hypernova and/or magnetar wind nebula remnant created by the newborn millisecond magnetar with the large supply of rotational energy Erot ∼ 1052 erg.

Radio Counterparts of Gamma-Ray Sources in the Cygnus Region

The view of the gamma-ray universe is being continuously expanded by space high energy (HE) and ground based very-high energy (VHE) observatories. Yet, the angular resolution limitation still precludes a straightforward identification of these gamma-ray emitting sources. Radio observations are an effective tool for searching their possible counterparts at lower energies because the same population of relativistic electrons responsible for radio emission can also produce HE/VHE emission via inverse-Compton scattering. The Cygnus region is crowded by many gamma-ray sources, most of them remaining unidentified. In order to find possible counterparts to unidentified gamma-ray sources, we carried out a deep survey of the Cygnus region using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 610 MHz and 325 MHz. We did a detailed search for counterparts in the error circle of HE/VHE sources. We report 36 radio sources found in the error ellipse of 15 HE sources, and 11 in those of VHE sources. Eight sources have very steep radio spectral index alpha <-1.5, which are most likely to be pulsars and will be followed up for periodicity search. Such a significant number of pulsar candidates within the error circle of HE/VHE sources prompts fresh look at the energetics and efficacy of pulsars and pulsar wind nebulae in this context.

Design of the readout electronics for the fast trigger and time of flight of the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope

The GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope is planned for the launch at the end of this decade on the Navigator service platform designed by Lavochkin Association on an elliptical orbit with following initial parameters: an apogee ~300000, a perigee ~500 km, a rotation period ~7 days and inclination of 51.4°. The apparatus is expected to operate more than 5 years, reaching an unprecedented sensitivity for the search of dark matter signatures and the study of the unresolved and so far unidentified gamma-ray sources. An electronics system, which consists of 14 front-end multichannel electronics modules and the main processing unit with a total power consumption of about 400 W (74W for main processing unit), has been developed for providing fast trigger and veto for the data taking to the experiment. The communication between front-end modules, main processing unit and scientific data acquisition system of the gamma-ray telescope is performed via high-speed SPACEWIRE network. To assure the long-term reliability in space environment, a series of critical issues such as the radiation hardness, thermal design, components and board level quality control, warm and cold redundancy are taken into consideration. The main design concepts for the system, measurements setups together with some test results are presented.

Studying the nature of the unidentified gamma-ray source HESS J1841−055 with the MAGIC telescopes

ABSTRACT We investigate the physical nature and origin of the gamma-ray emission from the extended source HESS J1841−055 observed at TeV and GeV energies. We observed HESS J1841−055 at TeV energies for a total effective time of 43 h with the MAGIC telescopes, in 2012 and 2013. Additionally, we analysed the GeV counterpart making use of about 10 yr of Fermi-LAT data. Using both Fermi-LAT and MAGIC, we study both the spectral and energy-dependent morphology of the source for almost four decades of energy. The origin of the gamma-ray emission from this region is investigated using multiwaveband information on sources present in this region, suggested to be associated with this unidentified gamma-ray source. We find that the extended emission at GeV–TeV energies is best described by more than one source model. We also perform the first energy-dependent analysis of the HESS J1841−055 region at GeV–TeV. We find that the emission at lower energies comes from a diffuse or extended component, while the major contribution of gamma rays above 1 TeV arises from the southern part of the source. Moreover, we find that a significant curvature is present in the combined observed spectrum of MAGIC and Fermi-LAT. The first multiwavelength spectral energy distribution of this unidentified source shows that the emission at GeV–TeV energies can be well explained with both leptonic and hadronic models. For the leptonic scenario, bremsstrahlung is the dominant emission compared to inverse Compton. On the other hand, for the hadronic model, gamma-ray resulting from the decay of neutral pions (π0) can explain the observed spectrum. The presence of dense molecular clouds overlapping with HESS J1841−055 makes both bremsstrahlung and π0-decay processes the dominant emission mechanisms for the source.

Morphological and Spectral Study of 4FGL J1115.1–6118 in the Region of the Young Massive Stellar Cluster NGC 3603

Abstract We report a detailed study of an unidentified gamma-ray source located in the region of the compact stellar cluster NGC 3603. This is a star-forming region (SFR) powered by a massive cluster of OB stars. A dedicated analysis of about 10 yr of data from 10 GeV to 1 TeV, provided by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, yields the detection of a pointlike source at a significance of 9σ. The source photon spectrum can be described by a power-law model with a best-fit spectral index of 2.35 ± 0.03. In addition, the analysis of a deep Chandra image in the 0.5–7 keV band reliably rules out an extragalactic origin for the gamma-rays. We also conclude that the broadband spectral energy distribution of the point source can be explained well with both leptonic and hadronic models. No firm evidence of association with any other classes of known gamma-ray emitters is found; therefore, we speculate that 4FGL J1115.1−6118 is a gamma-ray-emitting SFR.

The Anticoincidence System of Space-Based Gamma-Ray Telescope GAMMA-400, Test Beam Studies of Anticoincidence Detector Prototype with SiPM Readout

The GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope is planned for the launch at the end of 2026 on the Navigator service platform designed by Lavochkin Association on an elliptical orbit with following initial parameters: an apogee $${\sim}$$ 300 000, a perigee $${\sim}$$ 500 km, a rotation period $${\sim}$$ 7 days and inclination of 51.4 $${}^{\circ}$$ . The apparatus is expected to operate for more than 5 years, reaching an unprecedented sensitivity for the search of dark matter signatures and the study of the unresolved and so far unidentified gamma-ray sources. The segmented anticoincidence counters surround the converter-tracker and calorimeter of the telescope with the purpose of vetoing to assure a clean track reconstruction and charged particle background suppression. The anticoincidence detector prototype based on long BC-408 scintillator with silicon photomultipliers readout was tested using 300-MeV positron beam of synchrotron C-25P ‘‘PAKHRA’’ of Lebedev Physical Institute. The measurement setup, design concepts for the prototype detector together with test results are discussed.

Constraints to Dark Matter Annihilation from High-Latitude HAWC Unidentified Sources

The Λ CDM cosmological framework predicts the existence of thousands of subhalos in our own Galaxy not massive enough to retain baryons and become visible. Yet, some of them may outshine in gamma rays provided that the dark matter is made of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which would self-annihilate and would appear as unidentified gamma-ray sources (unIDs) in gamma-ray catalogs. Indeed, unIDs have proven to be competitive targets for dark matter searches with gamma rays. In this work, we focus on the three high-latitude ( | b | ≥ 10 ) sources present in the 2HWC catalog of the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory with no clear associations at other wavelengths. Indeed, only one of these sources, 2HWC J1040+308, is found to be above the HAWC detection threshold when considering 760 days of data, i.e., a factor 1.5 more exposure time than in the original 2HWC catalog. Other gamma-ray instruments, such as Fermi-LAT or VERITAS at lower energies, do not detect the source. Also, this unID is reported as spatially extended, making it even more interesting in a dark matter search context. While waiting for more data that may shed further light on the nature of this source, we set competitive upper limits on the annihilation cross section by comparing this HAWC unID to expectations based on state-of-the-art N-body cosmological simulations of the Galactic subhalo population. We find these constraints to be particularly competitive for heavy WIMPs, i.e., masses above ∼25 (40) TeV in the case of the b b ¯ ( τ + τ − ) annihilation channel, reaching velocity-averaged cross section values of 2 × 10 − 25 ( 5 × 10 − 25 ) cm 3 ·s − 1 . Although far from testing the thermal relic cross section value, the obtained limits are independent and nicely complementary to those from radically different DM analyses and targets, demonstrating once again the high potential of this DM search approach.

High-energy gamma-ray sources in the VVV survey – I. The blazars

ABSTRACT There is a lack of blazar detections in the galactic plane area, even in the most recent blazar catalogues, mainly due to incompleteness resulting from interstellar dust and stellar contamination of our Galaxy. The VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea survey (VVV) aims to map variable sources towards the galactic plane in the near-infrared (IR). There are three catalogued and one candidate blazars in the VVV area, which are also detected by Fermi-LAT in the gamma-ray band and by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) at mid-IR wavelengths. We study the physical properties of these blazars in order to use them as a reference that would allow us to find counterparts of other unidentified gamma-ray sources in the future. All four sources have VVV counterparts, and two of them, 5BZUJ1731−3003 and 5BZQJ1802−3940 are also associated with WISE sources. They present very different properties compared with stellar or extragalactic objects. Their VVV Ks light curves show significant variability, and are characterized using a machine learning analysis. In particular, the blazar 5BZQJ1802−3940, a flat spectrum radio quasar, exhibits the smallest uncertainties in the Fermi-LAT position and it is a bright WISE source. Its near-IR properties in the colour–magnitude and colour–colour diagrams are very different from the stars and extragalactic objects in the field. It has the highest amplitude in the Ks differential light curve and fractional variability amplitude. This pilot study will allow us to search for and identify other blazars hidden behind the Galactic plane using the VVV survey data base.

Multiwavelength study of potential blazar candidates among Fermi-LAT unidentified gamma-ray sources

AbstractStudying unidentified γ-ray sources is important as they may hide new discoveries. We conducted a multiwavelength analysis of 13 unidentified Fermi-LAT sources in the 3FGL catalogue that have no known counterparts (Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources, UnIDs). The sample was selected for sources that have a single radio and X-ray candidate counterpart in their uncertainty ellipses. The purpose of this study is to find a possible blazar signature and to model the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the selected sources using an empirical log parabolic model. The results show that the synchrotron emission of all sources peaks in the infrared (IR) band and that the high-energy emission peaks in MeV to GeV bands. The SEDs of sources in our sample are all blazar like. In addition, the peak position of the sample reveals that 6 sources (46.2%) are Low Synchrotron Peaked (LSP) blazars, 4 (30.8%) of them are High Synchrotron Peaked (HSP) blazars, while 3 of them (23.0%) are Intermediate Synchrotron Peaked (ISP) blazars.

Determination of K4000 of potential blazar candidates among EGRET unidentified gamma-ray sources

AbstractBlazars are radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with relativistic jets oriented towards the observer’s line-of-sight. Based on their optical spectra, blazars may be classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) or BL Lacs. FSRQs are more luminous blazars with both narrow and broad emission and absorption lines, while BL Lacs are less luminous and featureless. Recent studies show that blazars dominate (˜93%) the already-identified EGRET sources (142), suggesting that among the unidentified sources (129) there could still be faint blazars. Due to the presence of a strong non-thermal component inside their jets, blazars are found to display a weaker depression at ˜4000 Å (K 4000 ≤ 0.4). In this study, we aimed at determining the K 4000 break for a selected sample among the potential blazar candidates from unidentified EGRET sources to confirm their blazar nature. We used two blazar candidates, 3EG J1800-0146 and 3EG J1709-0817 associated with radio counterparts, J1802-0207 and J1713-0817, respectively. Their optical counterparts were obtained through spectroscopic observations using Robert Stobie spectrograph (RSS) at the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in South Africa. The observed Ca II H &amp; K lines depression at ˜4000 Å in spectra of these sources show a shallow depression, K 4000 = 0.35 ± 0.02 and 0.24 ± 0.01, respectively, suggesting that these sources are blazar candidates. Moreover, the redshifts z = 0.165 and 0.26 measured in their spectra confirm the extragalactic nature of these sources.

Unidentified gamma-ray sources as targets for indirect dark matter detection with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope

One of the predictions of the ΛCDM cosmological framework is the hierarchical formation of structure, giving rise to dark matter (DM) halos and subhalos. When the latter are massive enough they retain gas (i.e., baryons) and become visible. This is the case of the dwarf satellite galaxies in the Milky Way (MW) . Below a certain mass, halos may not accumulate significant amounts of baryons and remain completely dark. However, if DM particles are Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), we expect them to annihilate in subhalos, producing gamma rays which can be detected with the Fermi satellite. Using the three most recent point-source Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalogs (3FGL, 2FHL and 3FHL), we search for DM subhalo candidates among the unidentified sources, i.e., sources with no firm association to a known astrophysical object. We apply several selection criteria based on the expected properties of the DM-induced emission from subhalos, which allow us to significantly reduce the list of potential candidates. Then, by characterizing the minimum detection flux of the instrument and comparing our sample to predictions from the Via Lactea II (VL-II) N-body cosmological simulation, we place conservative and robust constraints on the ⟨σ v⟩−mDM parameter space. For annihilation via the τ+τ− channel, we put an upper limit of 4 × 10−26 (5 × 10−25) cm3s−1 for a mass of 10 (100) GeV . A critical improvement over previous treatments is the repopulation we made to include low-mass subhalos below the VL\ obreakdash-II mass resolution. With more advanced subhalo candidate filtering the sensitivity reach of our method can potentially improve these constraints by a factor 3 (2) for τ+τ− (bb̄) channel.

Magnetar SGR 1900+14 as a Potential Source of Galactic Cosmic Rays with Energies Above 1020 eV

The analysis of the influence of the Galactic magnetic field on the trajectory of cosmic rays of extremely high energies (EHECR, E > 1020 eV) detected by Auger and Telescope Array (TA) detectors shows that the magnetar SGR 1900+14 is a potential Galactic source of the EHECR triplet – three events in a circle of radius 2° in the vicinity of the Galactic Center (l = 35°, b = –4°). Magnetar SGR 1900+14 – a neutron star with magnetic field of the order of 1015 G – was formed as a result of the Supernova outburst 1000…6000 years ago. In our work we investigate possible manifestations of cosmic rays accelerated by the Supernova remnant’s shock, due to their interaction with the molecular clouds of the interstellar medium in the vicinity of Supernova. In particular, the possibility of such a gamma-ray emission model of the newly discovered unidentified TeV gamma-ray source 2HWC J1907+084 is analyzed.

Ancient Pulsar Wind Nebulae as a natural explanation for unidentified gamma-ray sources

A large part of the Galactic sources emitting very high energy (VHE; > 1011 eV) gamma-rays are currently still unidentified. The evolution of Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe) plays a crucial role in interpreting these sources. The time-dependent modeling of PWNe has been tested on a sample of well-known young and intermediate age PWNe; and it is currently applied to the full-sample of unidentified VHE Galactic sources. The consequences of this interpretation go far beyond the interpretation of “dark sources” (i.e. VHE gamma-ray sources without lower energies, radio or X-ray, counterparts): e.g. there could be strong implication in the origin of cosmic rays and (when considering a leptonic origin of the gamma-ray signal) they can be important for reinterpreting the detection of starburst galaxies in the TeV gamma-ray band. Moreover, the number of Galactic VHE sources is currently increasing with further observation by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and by the advent of more sensitive water Cherenkov telescopes such as HAWC (High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory); therefore the physical interpretation of unidentified sources becomes more and more crucial.

Einstein@Home discovers a radio-quiet gamma-ray millisecond pulsar

Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are old neutron stars that spin hundreds of times per second and appear to pulsate as their emission beams cross our line of sight. To date, radio pulsations have been detected from all rotation-powered MSPs. In an attempt to discover radio-quiet gamma-ray MSPs, we used the aggregated power from the computers of tens of thousands of volunteers participating in the Einstein@Home distributed computing project to search for pulsations from unidentified gamma-ray sources in Fermi Large Area Telescope data. This survey discovered two isolated MSPs, one of which is the only known rotation-powered MSP to remain undetected in radio observations. These gamma-ray MSPs were discovered in completely blind searches without prior constraints from other observations, raising hopes for detecting MSPs from a predicted Galactic bulge population.

Probing the local environment of the supernova remnant HESS J1731−347 with CO and CS observations

The shell-type supernova remnant HESS J1731$-$347 emits TeV gamma-rays, and is a key object for the study of the cosmic ray acceleration potential of supernova remnants. We use 0.5-1 arcminute Mopra CO/CS(1-0) data in conjunction with HI data to calculate column densities towards the HESS J1731$-$347 region. We trace gas within at least four Galactic arms, typically tracing total (atomic+molecular) line-of-sight H column densities of 2-3$\times$10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. Assuming standard X-factor values and that most of the HI/CO emission seen towards HESS J1731$-$347 is on the near-side of the Galaxy, X-ray absorption column densities are consistent with HI+CO-derived column densities foreground to, but not beyond, the Scutum-Crux Galactic arm, suggesting a kinematic distance of $\sim$3.2 kpc for HESS J1731$-$347. At this kinematic distance, we also find dense, infrared-dark gas traced by CS(1-0) emission coincident with the north of HESS J1731$-$347, the nearby HII region G353.43$-$0.37 and the nearby unidentified gamma-ray source HESS J1729$-$345. This dense gas lends weight to the idea that HESS J1729$-$345 and HESS J1731-347 are connected, perhaps via escaping cosmic-rays.

Testing the dark matter subhalo hypothesis of the gamma-ray source 3FGL J2212.5+0703

N-body simulations predict that galaxies at the Milky Way scale host a large number of dark matter (DM) subhalos. Some of these subhalos, if they are massive enough or close enough to the Earth, might be detectable in $\gamma$ rays due to the DM annihilation. 3FGL J2212.5+0703, an unidentified gamma-ray source, has been suggested to be the counterpart candidate of a DM subhalo by Bertoni et al. (2015, 2016). In this work we analyze the Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data of 3FGL J2212.5+0703 to independently test the DM subhalo hypothesis of this source. In order to suppress the possible contamination from two nearby very-bright blazars, we just take into account the front-converting gamma-rays which have better angular resolutions than that of the back-converting photons. In addition to the spatial distribution analysis, we have extended the spectrum analysis down to the energies of $\sim 100$ MeV, and thoroughly examined the variability of the emission during the past 8 years. We confirm that 3FGL J2212.5+0703 is a steady and spatially-extended gamma-ray emitter at a high confidence level. The spectrum is well consistent with that expected from DM annihilation into $b\bar{b}$. The introduction of a phenomenological LogParabola spectrum just improves the fit slightly. All these results suggest that 3FGL J2212.5+0703 could be indicative of a DM subhalo.

A millisecond pulsar candidate in a 21-h orbit: 3FGL J0212.1+5320

We present the discovery of a variable optical counterpart to the unidentified gamma-ray source 3FGL J0212.1+5320 and argue that this is a new compact binary millisecond pulsar (MSP) candidate. We show 3FGL J0212.1+5320 hosts a semidetached binary with a 0.869 55 ± 0.000 15 d orbital period and an F6-type companion star at an estimated distance of D = 1.1 ± 0.2 kpc, with a radial velocity curve semi-amplitude K2 = 214.1 ± 5.0 km s−1 and a projected rotational velocity of V sin (i) = 73.2 ± 1.6 km s−1. We find a hard X-ray source at the same location with a 0.5–10 keV luminosity LX = 2.6 × 1032 (D/1.1 kpc)2 erg s−1, which strengthens the MSP identification. Our results imply a mass ratio q = M2/M1 = 0.26|$^{+0.02}_{-0.03}$| if the companion star fills its Roche lobe, and q ≳ 0.26 in any case. This classifies 3FGL J0212.1+5320 as a ‘redback’ binary MSP; if its MSP nature is confirmed, this will be the brightest compact binary MSP in the optical band (r″ ≃ 14.3 mag) and will have the longest orbital period among Galactic field systems (nearly 21 h). Based on the light curve peak-to-peak amplitude (Δr = 0.19 mag), we further suggest that the orbital inclination is high and the putative pulsar mass is close to canonical (M1 ≃ 1.3–1.6 M⊙). Finally, we discuss the lack of heating signatures and asymmetric optical light curves in the context of other redback MSPs.

Looking for blazars in a sample of unidentified high-energy emittingFermisources

Context. Based on their overwhelming dominance among associated Fermi gamma ray catalogue sources, it is expected that a large fraction of the unidentified Fermi objects are blazars. Through crossmatching between the positions of unidentified gamma ray sources from the First Fermi Catalog of gamma ray sources emitting above 10 GeV (1FHL) and the ROSAT and Swift XRT catalogues of X ray objects and between pointed XRT observations, a sample of 36 potential associations was found in previous works with less than 15 arcsec of positional offset. One third of them have recently been classified; the remainder, though believed to belong to the blazar class, still lack spectroscopic classifications. Aims. We study the optical spectrum of the putative counterparts of these unidentified gamma ray sources in order to find their redshifts and to determine their nature and main spectral characteristics. Methods. An observational campaign was carried out on the putative counterparts of 13 1FHL sources using medium resolution optical spectroscopy from the Osservatorio Astronomico di Bologna in Loiano, Italy; the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and the Nordic Optical Telescope, both in the Canary Islands, Spain; and the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional San Pedro Martir in Baja California, Mexico. Results. We were able to classify 14 new objects based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. Conclusions. Twelve new blazars were found, along with one new quasar and one new narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) to be potentially associated with the 1FHL sources of our sample. Redshifts or lower limits were obtained when possible alongside central black hole mass and luminosity estimates for the NLS1 and the quasar.
