Emotional Intelligence and Culture Boost Accounting Understanding in Indonesia

This study investigates the impact of learning behavior, interest in learning, emotional intelligence, and culture on the understanding of financial accounting. Despite extensive research on factors influencing academic performance, there remains a gap in understanding how these specific variables affect accounting students' comprehension. The research employs a quantitative approach, analyzing data from 77 accounting students from the 2018 and 2019 cohorts at Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo. Data were collected via questionnaires distributed through Google Forms and analyzed using multiple regression analysis with SPSS. Results indicate that while learning behavior and interest in learning do not significantly influence financial accounting understanding, emotional intelligence and culture do. These findings suggest that emotional intelligence and cultural context play crucial roles in academic performance, highlighting the need for educational strategies that enhance these aspects to improve accounting education. Future research should explore the mechanisms through which emotional intelligence and culture affect learning outcomes in different educational settings. Emotions in Accounting: A Review to Bridge the Paradigmatic Divide

This review analyzes the role of emotions in accounting research. Drawing on an analytical framework that differentiates between joy-, fear-, anger- and sadness-based emotions, we disentangle the bidirectional dynamics between emotions and accounting, and show how accounting both conditions and is conditioned by emotions. In this way, we demonstrate how an emotional turn in accounting scholarship challenges and expands our understanding of financial accounting, management accounting, and auditing. In addition, we raise awareness about the performative role of ontological and epistemological positions in accounting research on emotions. We find that scholars from different paradigmatic traditions mostly acknowledge each other's work, but often miss the opportunity to fully embrace it. By illustrating the productive insights that emerge from a stronger inter-paradigmatic engagement, we draw attention to the necessity (and excitement) of crossing the great divide. We conclude by outlining avenues of future research on emotions in accounting.

Beyond debits and credits: Using integrated projects to improve students’ understanding of financial accounting

This paper discusses a method for developing integrated, multi-step projects that will help students better understand the accounting cycle and develop the problem-solving and technology skills that they need to become successful accounting professionals. More specifically, this method allows instructors to develop projects designed to review specific topics, introduce basic tax consequences, demonstrate how transactions affect the financial statements and encourage students to think about investor reactions and possible ethical dilemmas without sacrificing substantial amounts of class time. After discussing how to develop this type of project, the paper provides suggestions on how to incorporate the project into an intermediate accounting course.

The integration of information and information technology in accounting education: Effects on student performance

The role of chartered accountants in commerce has radically changed over the last decade. Regrettably, tertiary accounting education has not been able to keep up with these changes, resulting in a gap between the skills taught by universities and the skills required by commerce. To reduce this gap, SAICA issued the Competency Framework in 2010 which requires, in addition to the technical knowledge that chartered accountants are best known for, pervasive skills that all chartered accountants should possess upon entering the profession. However, the integration of these pervasive skills with the technical core subjects taught to accountancy students is limited. This article investigated whether one of the listed pervasive skills (namely competency in information and information technology) can successfully be integrated with a technical core subject (namely financial accounting) in such a way that the technical knowledge of the student is improved due to the integration. A Microsoft Excel consolidation model was created and presented to students to complete. Formal assessments and a questionnaire were used to determine whether the completion of the Microsoft Excel consolidation model, affected students’ performance. The results showed that the completion of the consolidation model improved students’ understanding of financial accounting.

PEMAHAMAN APARATUR PEMERINTAH TERHADAP PENERAPAN AKUNTANSI KEUANGAN DEMI TERCIPTANYA GOOD GOVERNANCE

Herlin dan Yanto Effendi: The purpose of this study to determine the understanding of government apparatus in the area of financial accounting application in order to realize good governance. Government Personnel Rejang Lebong still has a bit of an apparatus / HR background in accounting, from 25 respondents, only 9 respondents (36%) accounting background and the rest comes from other disciplines.The results showed that the correlation obtained the r value of 0, 203 a positive correlation between the variables x and y variables where the value of r lies in the interval 0 <r <1, and has a level of low relation because r value lies in the interval coefficient of 0, 20 -, 399. Reliability test alpha value of 0.60 is said to be reliable so that the new variable of educational background alpha coefficient of 0.6123, the education and training of alpha coefficient of 0.622 and Awareness Regional Financial Accounting alpha coefficient of 0.710. T-count value <the t-table, t-count equal to 3,699 while the t-table at significant level of 0.05% t-table of 4,946, this means that the level of understanding of government officials in Rejang Lebong specifically the application of financial accounting still weak or low , so they need to increase human resources through education, training, and understanding of financial accounting has become a standard government.Key words: Good Governance.

The Effects of Presentation Formats on Understanding Financial Accounting: an Experimental Study

Most financial accounting presentations consist of graphs and tables with subtle variations in the way that the associated text is presented. While alternative presentations of tables versus graphs have been widely researched, the impact of text proximity to a graph or table has received little attention. This study experimentally examines the effects of two instructional design formats on student’s understanding of financial accounting. Graphical presentation effectiveness was operationalised as accuracy and mental effort in answering questions of different levels of complexity. Using financial accounting instructional material presented either as a graph and separate text or text embedded in the graph, participants responded to recall and transfer questions. The results of an experiment suggest a strong relation between presentation format and understanding of financial accounting. Accounting students understand an integrated graph more than a separate graph and text. We conclude that there is value accruing from close proximity of text to the graph, but suggest additional benefits may be reaped from presenting text and diagrams in an integrated form.

This study examined the differential moderating effects associated with field dependence-independence and perceptions of stress on students' performance after controlling for SAT Mathematics and Verbal scores as well as students' actual effort on homework. The average performance of 178 third-year accounting majors over three examinations was used to evaluate their understanding of financial accounting. The students also took the Group Embedded Figures Test. While the data indicate that the most significant variables were students' effort, SAT Verbal scores, and their perceptions of stress, these variables were differentially associated with students' performance depending upon whether the student was classified as a field-independent or field-dependent learner.

CONCEPTUALIZATION OF ASSETS AND LIABILITIES

The conceptualization of assets and liabilities is fundamental to an understanding of financial accounting. It is often maintained that assets and liabilities represent economic resources and economic obligations, respectively, but that not all economic resources are assets and not all economic obligations are liabilities — a somewhat confusing state of affairs. This paper presents a schema for distinguishing assets from economic resources and liabilities from economic obligations based on the authoritative literature in the United States, Australia, Canada and Great Britain. The schema should be useful for clarifying certain financial accounting controversies concerning income taxes, leases, pension benefit payments and executory contracts.
