A Study on Teaching Factors Affecting Learning Outcomes in General Education: University A’s Case-based

The purpose of this study is to provide implications for general education by analyzing the factors influencing learning outcomes in general education courses. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with 2,042 enrolled students at A National University located in Chungnam. For this study, correlation analysis and descriptive statistics, analysis of differences in learning performance according to students’ background characteristics, and multiple regression analysis of factors affecting learning performance in general education courses were conducted. The findings are as follows: Firstly, from the results of analyzing the difference in learning outcomes based on students’ background characteristics, we can see that the first-year students were statistically significantly lower in satisfaction than their second and third-year counterparts. Additionally, students from the College of Arts showed statistically significant differences in satisfaction compared to those from the College of Education, College of Humanities and Social Science, and College of Engineering. Secondly, the analysis of factors influencing learning outcomes showed that in the “Course Syllabus Area”, the clarity of learning objectives, in the “Course Content Area” the organization of course content for achieving learning objectives, and in the “Course Operation Area,” factors such as instructors’ adequate preparation, active communication with instructors during lectures, adherence to the weekly course schedule outlines in the syllabus, and appropriate supplementary sessions significantly predicted learning outcomes in general education courses. Additionally, in the “Student Evaluation Area,” the use of appropriate assessment for teaching methods, as well as providing suitable feedback on assignments and evaluation results, were significant predictors of learning outcomes. Furthermore, we found that the clarity of learning objectives in the “Course Syllabus Area” only moderately predicted the understanding of course content. Additionally, factors in the “Course Operation Area” such as active communication with instructors during lectures, adherence to the weekly course schedule, and appropriate supplementary sessions only moderate predicted knowledge and skill improvement. However, we also found the appropriateness of notifying the students of any changes in course content in the “Course Operation Area” not to be statistically significant in predicting knowledge and skill improvement. Based on the above research findings, it is recommended that instructors emphasize the importance of their role in influencing learning outcomes in general education courses. Additionally, it is crucial that instructors carefully structure course content during the planning phase to align with the achievement of learning objectives. Adequate preparation by instructors, active engagement with students during lectures, and the implementation of strategies to enhance interaction should be prioritized. Furthermore, the effective utilization of appropriate assessment methods for teaching and providing constructive feedback on assignments and evaluations is essential. This study also suggested deriving recommendations for assignment criteria, evaluation methods, and feedback mechanisms.

Digital Narratives for Academic Success: Enhancing Student Achievement through Storytelling

This study looked at how Digital Story-telling (DST) affected high school students studying English as a second language in terms of their learning motivationm, critical thinking, and academic achievement. This year-long study included 48 10th-grade students from two English courses using a quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest assessments. Information technology-integrated instruction at two levels—lecture-style (for the comparison group) and DST (for the experimental group)—was the independent variable. In order to assess how well DST improves learning outcomes, both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered. This included critical thinking and English language competence tests as well as questionnaire answers about learning motivation. The collected data underwent examination through descriptive analysis, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), and qualitative content analysis. Our findings show that participants in the DST group surpassed those in the lecture-style ITII group concerning critical thinking, learning motivation, and English proficiency. Insights gathered from interviews underscore the noteworthy educational impact of DST. Both the teacher and students expressed that DST elevated their understanding of course content, heightened their curiosity, and enhanced their critical thinking abilities—essential skills for equipping students for the dynamic challenges of the 21st century. Incorporating stories from Palestinian culture, rooted in the real-life experiences of students, has been successfully undertaken to enhance the cultural relevance of DST. This addition brings a valuable dimension to the research, providing a more comprehensive understanding of how DST impacts students' learning experiences. By integrating these authentic narratives, the study successfully captures the cultural richness and diversity inherent in the students' backgrounds, thereby enriching the overall research findings.

Patient-based interdisciplinary e-learning with reflection: An experience of biomedical science, allied health and complementary medicine students

E-learning modules were developed to enhance student engagement, reflection and interdisciplinary learning in Pathology courses undertaken by students from the Biomedical Science, Allied Health, and Complementary Medicine disciplines. The modules focused on generating multi-disciplinary and team-based solutions to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment/management of patients. At pre- and post-intervention, we analysed the students’ experience of three themes: E-learning, reflection, and interdisciplinary learning. Flexibility and ability to reinforce understanding of course content were identified as main advantages of e-learning but a lack of direct support was a common concern. Visual aids and interactive assessments were suggested to improve online experiences. While all students had a positive pre-conception of all themes prior to intervention, the delivery of the modules significantly improved students’ perception on how e-learning deepened their understanding of course materials via reflection and interdisciplinary learning, with both aspects serving to create a holistic learning experience.

Integration of Febio as an Instructional Tool in the Undergraduate Biomechanics Curriculum.

Computer simulations play an important role in a range of biomedical engineering applications. Thus, it is important that biomedical engineering students engage with modeling in their undergraduate education and establish an understanding of its practice. In addition, computational tools enhance active learning and complement standard pedagogical approaches to promote student understanding of course content. Herein, we describe the development and implementation of learning modules for computational modeling and simulation (CM&S) within an undergraduate biomechanics course. We developed four CM&S learning modules that targeted predefined course goals and learning outcomes within the febio studio software. For each module, students were guided through CM&S tutorials and tasked to construct and analyze more advanced models to assess learning and competency and evaluate module effectiveness. Results showed that students demonstrated an increased interest in CM&S through module progression and that modules promoted the understanding of course content. In addition, students exhibited increased understanding and competency in finite element model development and simulation software use. Lastly, it was evident that students recognized the importance of coupling theory, experiments, and modeling and understood the importance of CM&S in biomedical engineering and its broad application. Our findings suggest that integrating well-designed CM&S modules into undergraduate biomedical engineering education holds much promise in supporting student learning experiences and introducing students to modern engineering tools relevant to professional development.

Status in a psychological statistics class: The role of academic and status-based identities in college students’ subjective social status

AbstractGreat effort has been invested in increasing STEM achievement among students, but feelings of low status among underrepresented or otherwise vulnerable students may be creating additional challenges. The present study assessed how perceptions of social status within the classroom—termed subjective social status—aligned with objective course performance and differed by sex, first-generation status, work status, and race/ethnicity among 713 students enrolled across three introductory statistics classes. Findings indicated that final exam score was moderately related to ratings of subjective social status, suggesting that factors besides objective course performance may influence classroom subjective social status. When asked to explain how they evaluated their standing in the course, students reported five main themes, including both academic achievement with respect to exam scores and their understanding of course content. When examining differences by status-based identities in subjective social status, we found that female and first-generation students had lower subjective social status compared to their male and continuing-generation peers, although results were less robust for first-generation status. Likewise, working students reported lower subjective social status relative to non-working students, despite showing no difference in final exam score. In contrast, although Asian/Asian American students outperformed Latine students, there were no differences in reports of subjective social status between Asian/Asian American, Latine, and white students. Taken together, results suggest that factors beyond course performance may relate to students’ subjective social status, and subjective social status may contribute to disparities in academic performance, especially by sex and work status.

Abstract: The application of constructivist ideas in professional English writing teaching can help students construct meaningful understanding of course content while learning English, thereby improving their English writing and comprehension abilities. It enables students to explore course knowledge more deeply and ensures comprehensive improvement of students' professional English literacy under the influence of blended learning. Therefore, in the process of reforming and innovating professional English writing teaching activities, teachers should reexamine the guidance of constructivist ideas and choose constructivist theory, zone of proximal development theory, and input-output theory as guiding principles. They should explore group cooperative blended learning models, blended learning models in segmented classrooms, and blended learning models supported by communicative context creation. This approach effectively highlights the scientific and rational nature of educational reform and promotes high-quality advancement of professional English writing teaching.

Reflection On Service-Learning Among Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Students

The purpose of service learning is to connect theory and practice in a way that gives students a prospect to both take part in a service activity that meets community needs, as well as reflect on the experience in class to enhance their civic engagement and deepen their understanding of course content. A successful service-learning program requires reflective practice. The School of Education at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia has been conducting service-learning for many years. Although there is no proper guideline for the students to reflect on their service-learning experiences, students are still expected to do so. The objective in this study are describing service-learning experience. This research study applies case study research method among students’ reflective experiences in service-learning at School of Education in UTM. Data collection was done using qualitative research methodology involving semi structured interviews with UTM postgraduates. Triangulation method used to validate the data and continued with thematic analysis to identify the themes. The findings for every research question have been plotted in diagram. Based on the themes from the findings, a template was proposed for improving service-learning reflection for the students from UTM.

Re-Envisioning Learning through a Trauma-Informed Lens: Empowering Students in their Personal and Academic Growth

We incorporated trauma-informed principles into the design of a synchronous, online Religion and Politics course and then evaluated impacts on student learning through qualitative methods. Using a novel approach, students self-evaluated their learning throughout the course in weekly reflections. Using content analysis and directed coding techniques, we analyzed students’ reflection assessments for themes of trauma-informed principles: safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. We found that students co-developed a sense of safety by engaging in respectful peer dialogue; established trustworthiness through self-disclosure of personal beliefs; collaborated with peers to develop a deeper understanding of course content; and acquired transferable skills through choice in assessments. In addition, students experienced empowerment by recognizing their growth in four primary areas: (1) their personal beliefs and perspectives; (2) their understanding of the course material; (3) their learning; and (4) their ability to use academic tools. Our findings extend and support existing research on the efficacy of trauma-informed practices; furthermore, our research suggests that incorporating trauma-informed principles into course design can support students in their learning as well as bolster their capacity to succeed in other areas inside and outside of the classroom (e.g., engaging in difficult conversations, seeking out support, using transferable skills in other contexts, applying course content to their own lives). Finally, our case study presents innovative approaches for assessing how students engage with trauma-informed course design.

Use of instructional videos in leadership education in higher education under COVID-19: A qualitative study.

The use of online teaching mode has grown rapidly in recent years, particularly under the COVID-19 pandemic. To promote the learning motivation of students and teaching effectiveness, development of attractive online teaching material such as videos is important. In the present study, we developed 15 theory-related videos and 9 case-based videos in the context of a leadership course focusing on psychological well-being and psychosocial competence. Using a qualitative research methodology via focus groups (N = 48 students) to evaluate these videos, six themes emerged from the data, including video arrangement, design of videos, content of videos, benefits to students' pre-lesson self-learning, benefits to students' learning of course content, and contribution to students' class participation. The findings suggest that the videos can elicit positive perceptions of the students in a flipped classroom arrangement. Students also benefit from the videos in terms of their understanding of course content and their participation in class discussion. Besides, the study suggests that the videos promote the learning efficiency of the students. The present qualitative findings concurred with the previous quantitative findings, suggesting the value of using virtual teaching and learning to promote psychosocial competence in university students.

Reorganizing assessment questions to provide additional information on student understanding of specific course content.

Performance on exams and course letter grades are broad standards used to determine understanding of course content. To gain a different perspective on students' knowledge, we examined whether grouping exam questions based on the topic they assessed would provide additional information on students' comprehension. Assessment questions from our physiology course were organized into groups based on major physiology content categories. We created 10 content categories and calculated students' performance in each category. The average of the 10 scores was compared with the course grade. The scores in individual categories reflected student knowledge of specific physiology content. The average scores of the 10 categories correlated with course letter grades. Analysis of performance demonstrated that 65% of students with course grades between 70 and 73% answered less than 70% of assessment questions correctly in four or more content categories. Evaluation of performance in grouped assessment questions provided additional information on student understanding and identified specific course content in which students underperformed.

A Flipped Learning Experience in Geography: A Qualitative Study using Focus Group Discussion

Flipped learning (FL) is gaining broader acceptance in geography education. This study aims to explore the remaining question concerning how the FL approach is associated with students' understanding of Geography course content. A focus group discussion (FGD) was conducted in a protocol through nine groups of students consisting of six to ten members per group. In total, eighty-eight undergraduate geography students had taken part in the discussion. Qualitative data obtained from the FGD were coded and thematically analyzed. The qualitative analysis revealed four major themes: (i) attention to learning geography, (ii) personal needs in learning geography (iii) confidence to succeed in learning geography, and (iv) satisfaction in learning geography associated with students' understanding of the course content. The results reveal that the understanding of the students of the course content was high through the application of the FL approach to teaching and learning. The finding is very significant to provide a guideline for FL application at the university level, specifically for Geography Module to increase students’ understanding of the course content.

This research was aimed at developing instructional media based PowToon in Muhadatsah education at Mts Nurul Islam Indonesia. The research reveals that instructional media based PowToon was valid according to bothsome experts, practicable, and has a potential effect to increase student understanding of course content

Making Philosophy Personal

Reflective journals are characterized by their expressive freedom and their intent that students explicitly connect course material to their own life experiences, emotions, beliefs, and feelings. Drawing on research on the use of reflective journals and on the reflections of students in my philosophy courses, I demonstrate how philosophy professors can use reflective journals as a tool to help their students achieve important learning outcomes. By making philosophy personal for students, reflective journals allow students to practice philosophy as a way of life, achieve important metacognitive outcomes, and (drawing on constructivism in learning theory) increase their knowledge and understanding of course content.

Improving Nursing Student Resilience Using Online Simulation and Resilience-Based Content in a Pediatric Course.

New graduate nurse job satisfaction persistently decreases at 6 months postgraduation. To prepare future nurses for career resilience, schools of nursing are implementing resilience into their curriculum. A large Midwestern school of nursing developed and instituted small group discussions, individual assignments, and online simulations to foster career resilience in a required specialty course. The course, offered in the last year of nursing school, included 93 nursing students and a comparison group of 93 nursing students. The intervention showed an increase in Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) scores. Online simulations were useful for classroom learning, helped students discover new ways of thinking, and increased understanding of course content. Differences in simulation techniques were found, and students reported benefitting more from faculty-guided simulations than self-guided simulations. Nurse educators implementing resilience simulation programs can increase new graduate nurse resilience using online simulation, which is an effective technique for teaching nursing students. Analysis of the Effect of Artificial Intelligence on Role Cognition in the Education System.

Taking the entire education system in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, Central China, as an example, this paper uses the questionnaire survey method to analyze the effect of artificial intelligence (AI) on role cognition in the education system. The education system targeted by this questionnaire survey involves 8 categories: preschool education, primary education, secondary education, higher education, adult education, computer network education, enterprise education, and social education; the respondents include 368 teachers, 402 students or learners, 118 school managers, and 124 family members of students or learners in all above education categories. The questionnaire design has a total of 34 question classified into 6 role cognition items, with a 5-level score; a total of 1012 questionnaires were distributed, and 978 were recovered with a recovery rate of 96.64%, in which 957 were valid questionnaires with an effective rate of 97.85%. The study results show that the learning of AI-assisted courses is strongly dependent on course role cognition, and the construction of role cognition is related to the understanding of course content, teaching methods, and activity methods. Therefore, the effect of AI on role cognition in the education system needs to be systematically analyzed from the aspects of function realization form, resource presentation method, supporting hardware form, teacher-student interaction method, and representation method of works. As connecters, teacher's role cognition is limited by the degree of understanding learners, the amount of resources, and data processing capabilities, but the advantage is that they can flexibly monitor and adjust. AI technology is flexible and diverse, it functions in learning and teaching activities in a variety of ways, and there is no agreement on the terminology to describe its role in role recognition. The results of this paper provide a reference for further researches on the effect of AI on role cognition in the education system.

Implementing Ungrading in Undergraduate Exercise Physiology

Natural science faculty are increasingly experimenting with alternate modes to assess student learning. Ungrading, popularized by Susan Blum’s edited anthology of the same name, gives instructors freedom to move beyond traditional grades for a more complete understanding of student learning. Ungrading is a student‐centered approach to assessment of learning which focuses on student self‐reflection and metacognition, and limiting instructor bias. Ungrading can be useful in physiology education by incentivizing intrinsic motivation and attention to understanding instead of memorization. Reducing grade anxiety allows students in exercise physiology to focus on understanding and applying course content.In spring 2020, ungrading was implemented in an upper division undergraduate exercise physiology course taught over 4 weeks (N=19). In previous sections, students often commented that their grade did not reflect how much they learned. The purpose of ungrading was to more closely align grades with student learning. The lecture portion of the course occurred as a flipped classroom with small group meetings. In class, students asked and answered questions, discussed primary research, and interpreted physiological data to better understand and apply course material. Students were given details about ungrading at the beginning of the course, read selected essays about ungrading, and discussed their impressions of the new system with the instructor. One student had previous experience with ungrading.Students completed two guided self‐evaluations to describe their learning and reflect on their challenges and successes. Twice during the course students met individually with the instructor to receive feedback about their self‐evaluations and overall performance. During the mid‐term meeting, students set specific goals to work towards for the remainder of the course.Student self‐reflections (n=19) and student opinion surveys (n=15) were used to evaluate the ungrading practice. 89.4% (n=17) of the students indicated they agreed or strongly agreed that their learning was enhanced by ungrading. 100% of students agreed or strongly agreed that they valued their learning during the course. 87% (n=13 of 15) indicated the amount they learned in the course was excellent or good. 93% (n=14 of 15) rated the evaluative techniques and grading as excellent or good. Qualitative analysis of open‐ended reflection questions revealed students felt they were more easily able to apply knowledge with less grade based anxiety. Students reported increased curiosity and a deeper understanding of content when revising mistakes or misconceptions in their work. The instructor found ungrading very effective in improving student engagement with and understanding of course content. Overall, ungrading was effective for encouraging a deeper understanding of course content and aligning course grades with student learning.

Toward a higher education playfulness pedagogy (HEPP) for pre-service early childhood Work Integrated Learning courses

ABSTRACT In this “Reflection on Practice” paper we reflect on an early childhood Work Integrated Learning course redesign that explored new ways of developing and applying playfulness theory to higher education instructional approaches. Our experience was that the higher education students required more support to deepen their understanding of course content. In response, we engaged with emerging playfulness pedagogy theory to develop a Higher Education Playfulness Pedagogy instructional model that reflects the principles of pleasurable, immersive intellectual engagement and risk-taking. The focus was on creating the conditions in which students can risk-take amid an environment of academic rigor and authentic engagement. First, we outline the Higher Education Pedagogy of Playfulness model that was developed for the course rewrite, then provide information about the course redesign with the view that others may replicate some of our practices or approaches. Last, we draw on anonymous student survey responses to discuss the potentials of HE playfulness pedagogy for early childhood Work Integrated Learning programs, and suggest areas for future study and exploration.

Promoting Engagement and Learning: Using the Fishbowl Strategy in Online and Hybrid College Courses

Utilizing constructivist teaching approaches in higher education promotes students’ engagement and learning. This article centers on an instructor’s use and implementation of the fishbowl strategy in two separate undergraduate courses at two different institutions. Originally conceived of as a teaching strategy for face-to-face classes, this instructor modified and employed the fishbowl strategy in a fully online course during Spring 2020 and later implemented in a hybrid class (Fall 2020). In both courses, the fishbowl strategy facilitated students’ learning and understanding of course content. It also supported peer-to-peer dialogue and undergraduates’ co-construction of knowledge. Critical Perspective Analysis of Higher Education Studies in the Online Mode – Emerging Challenges and Solutions

Many academic institutions that had previously hesitated to modify their old pedagogical method had to opt for completely online modules due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. This paper provides insight into the perception of students of higher education concerning the online mode of learning. Data was collected from 310 students pursuing different courses. A questionnaire, divided into 7 sections was administered including: general information of students, time management, understanding of course content, view of students on assignments and submissions, ease and comfort of study, skill development and motivation, and course satisfaction. The data was analyzed quantitative analysis. Results showed that 72.4% of students do not prefer the online platform for learning and this view is contributed by parameters like net connectivity, time, overall development of the candidate and evaluation of the course outcomes. Various parameters such as internet connectivity, parallel data users, unwanted anxiety, extra time, comfort, understanding of the concepts, interaction, information absorption and retainment, course evaluation and assignments, expense comparison, skill development, lecture participation and extracurricular growth were mentioned. It is suggested that an alternative to classroom learning must be used to maintain one's academic progress.

Experiential Service Learning: Promoting Competency-based Education for Gerontology Students

Service-learning is an effective pedagogical approach meant to deepen learners understanding of course content by linking scholarship and social action when structurally organized based on attainment of professional core competencies. The recent COVID-19 pandemic caused a rethinking of the way service learning practicum is delivered, especially as it relates to training health professionals who engage collaboratively with older persons (individuals aged 65 years and older). This poster examines the challenges faced by gerontology students as they transitioned to fully virtual learning and practicum format, the lessons learned, and how to close the gap between theory and practice for better programmatic processes. The data used to gather students experiences include; student reflective journals, class discussions and survey questions to students (n=44). The analytic framework utilized is the Social Cognitive Theory, (SCT)- which explains how individuals can master concepts through verbal and physical persuasion, including peer modelling. The goal is to promote leaners self- regulatory skills to achieve the course learning objectives, as obtained from the SCT six strategies for setting achievable goals, through: Feedback, self-instruction, self-monitoring, use of support and goal setting. Some of the lessons learned suggest students benefit more from service learning when they receive continuous feedback about how to develop intergenerational relationships with older adult partners assigned to in the community (68%), than from goal setting strategies (24%). The implication for practice is: there is a need to develop structured service-learning guidelines for undergraduate students in gerontology program to be prepared to better serve older adults.
