Evolution inspired binary flower pollination for the uncapacitated facility location problem

The present paper introduces a modified flower pollination algorithm (FPA) enhanced by evolutionary operators to solve the uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP), which is one of the well-known location science problems. The aim in UFLP is to select some locations to open facilities among a certain number of candidate locations so as to minimize the total cost, which is the sum of facility opening costs and transportation costs. Since UFLP is a binary optimization problem, FPA, which is introduced to solve real-valued optimization problems, is redesigned to be able to conduct search in binary domains. This constitutes one of the contributions of the present study. In this context, some evolutionary operators such as crossover and mutation are adopted by the proposed FPA. Next, the mutation operator is further enhanced by making use of an adaptive procedure that introduces greater level of diversity at earlier iterations and encourages intensification toward the end of search. Thus, while premature convergence and local optima problems at earlier iterations are avoided, a more intensified search around the found promising regions is performed. Secondarily, as demonstrated in this study, by making use of the reported evolutionary procedures, FPA is able to run in binary spaces without employing any additional auxiliary procedures such as transfer functions. All available benchmarking instances are solved by the proposed approach. As demonstrated by the comprehensive experimental study that includes statistically verified results, the developed approach is found as a promising algorithm that can be extended to numerous binary optimization problems.

OBABC: A one-dimensional binary artificial bee colony algorithm for binary optimization

Artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a widely utilized swarm intelligence (SI) algorithm for addressing continuous optimization problems. However, most binary variants of ABC (BABC) algorithms may suffer from issues such as invalid searches and high complexity when applied to binary problems. To address these challenges, we first establish a set of criteria for developing a BABC algorithm. Following these criteria, we propose a novel BABC algorithm, denoted as oBABC, which not only adheres to the defined criteria but also successfully inherits the advantages of original ABC algorithm. To evaluate the performance of oBABC and verify its effectiveness, experiments are conducted on two typical binary problems: uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP) and maximum cut problem (Max-Cut). The experimental results reveal the following findings: 1) The validity of the criteria and the accuracy of the theoretical analysis are confirmed. oBABC exhibits high search efficiency with an invalid learning rate (ILR) of 0 %, while the ILRs of other BABC algorithms almost exceeds 20 %. 2) In terms of search efficiency and capability, oBABC exhibits a significant improvement in search efficiency and consistently ranks at the top in terms of optimization capability. These results suggest that oBABC may be a highly efficient and effective tool for solving binary problems.

Solving the uncapacitated facility location problem under uncertainty: a hybrid tabu search with path-relinking simheuristic approach

The uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem that finds practical applications in several fields, such as logistics and telecommunication networks. While the existing literature primarily focuses on the deterministic version of the problem, real-life scenarios often involve uncertainties like fluctuating customer demands or service costs. This paper presents a novel algorithm for addressing the UFLP under uncertainty. Our approach combines a tabu search metaheuristic with path-relinking to obtain near-optimal solutions in short computational times for the determinisitic version of the problem. The algorithm is further enhanced by integrating it with simulation techniques to solve the UFLP with random service costs. A set of computational experiments is run to illustrate the effectiveness of the solving method.

EventGeoScout: Fostering Citizen Empowerment and Augmenting Data Quality through Collaborative Geographic Information Governance and Optimization

In this manuscript, we present EventGeoScout, an innovative framework for collaborative geographic information management, tailored to meet the needs of the dynamically changing landscape of geographic data integration and quality enhancement. EventGeoScout enables the seamless fusion of open data from different sources and provides users with the tools to refine and improve data quality. A distinctive feature of our framework is its commitment to platform-agnostic data management, ensuring that processed datasets are accessible via standard Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, reducing the maintenance burden on organizations while ensuring the continued relevance of the data. Our approach goes beyond the boundaries of traditional data integration, enabling users to fully harness the power of geospatial information by simplifying the data creation process and providing a versatile solution to the complex challenges posed by layered geospatial data. To demonstrate the versatility and robustness of EventGeoScout as an optimization tool, we present a case study centered on the Uncapacitated Facility Location Problem (UFLP), where a genetic algorithm was used to achieve outstanding performance on both traditional computing platforms and smartphone devices. As a concrete case study, we applied our solution in the context of the Málaga City Marathon, using the latest data from the last edition of the marathon.

Stabilizing Grand Cooperation via Cost Adjustment: An Inverse Optimization Approach

For an unbalanced cooperative game, its grand coalition can be stabilized by some instruments, such as subsidization and penalization, that impose new cost terms to certain coalitions. In this paper, we study an alternative instrument, referred to as cost adjustment, that does not need to impose any new coalition-specific cost terms. Specifically, our approach is to adjust existing cost coefficients of the game under which (i) the game becomes balanced so that the grand coalition becomes stable, (ii) a desired way of cooperation is optimal for the grand coalition to adopt, and (iii) the total cost to be shared by the grand coalition is within a prescribed range. Focusing on a broad class of cooperative games, known as integer minimization games, we formulate the problem on how to optimize the cost adjustment as a constrained inverse optimization problem. We prove [Formula: see text]-hardness and derive easy-to-check feasibility conditions for the problem. Based on two linear programming reformulations, we develop two solution algorithms. One is a cutting-plane algorithm, which runs in polynomial time when the corresponding separation problem is polynomial time solvable. The other needs to explicitly derive all the inequalities of a linear program, which runs in polynomial time when the linear program contains only a polynomial number of inequalities. We apply our models and solution algorithms to two typical unbalanced games, including a weighted matching game and an uncapacitated facility location game, showing that their optimal cost adjustments can be obtained in polynomial time. Enhancing Branch-and-Bound for Multiobjective 0-1 Programming

In the biobjective branch-and-bound literature, a key ingredient is objective branching, that is, to create smaller and disjoint subproblems in the objective space, obtained from the partial dominance of the lower bound set by the upper bound set. When considering three or more objective functions, however, applying objective branching becomes more complex, and its benefit has so far been unclear. In this paper, we investigate several ingredients that allow us to better exploit objective branching in a multiobjective setting. We extend the idea of probing to multiple objectives for the 0-1 case, enhance it in several ways, and show that, when coupled with objective branching, it results in significant speedups in terms of CPU times. We also show how to adapt it to the general integer case. Furthermore, we investigate cut generation based on the objective branching constraints. Besides, we generalize the best bound idea for node selection to multiple objectives, and we show that the proposed rules outperform, in the multiobjective literature, the commonly employed depth-first and breadth-first strategies. We also analyze problem-specific branching rules. We test the proposed ideas on available benchmark instances for three problem classes with three and four objectives, namely, the capacitated facility location problem, the uncapacitated facility location problem, and the knapsack problem. Our enhanced multiobjective branch-and-bound algorithm outperforms the best existing branch-and-bound–based approach and is the first to obtain competitive and even slightly better results than a state-of-the-art objective space search method on a subset of the problem classes. On Aligning Non-Order-Associated Binary Decision Diagrams

Recent studies employ collections of binary decision diagrams (BDDs) to solve combinatorial optimization problems. This paper focuses on the problem of optimally aligning two BDDs, that is, transforming them to enforce a common order of variables while keeping the total size of the diagrams as small as possible. We address this problem, which is known to be NP-hard, by introducing and studying a simplified problem instead of working with the more complex original diagrams. We discuss some basic properties of the simplified problem, design a corresponding heuristic for the original problem, and show empirically that this approach yields good quality alignments while significantly reducing the complexity of intermediate diagram transformations. We highlight the practicality of this approach in the context of a variation of the uncapacitated facility location problem. An efficient benders decomposition for the [formula omitted]-median problem

The p-median problem is a classic discrete location problem with numerous applications. It aims to open p sites while minimizing the sum of the distances of each client to its nearest open site. We study a Benders decomposition of the most efficient formulation in the literature. We show that the Benders cuts can be separated in linear time. The Benders reformulation leads to a compact formulation for the p-median problem. We implement a two-phase Benders decomposition algorithm that outperforms state-of-the-art methods on benchmark instances by an order of magnitude and allows to exactly solve for the first time several instances among which are large TSP instances and BIRCH instances. We also show that our implementation easily applies to the uncapacitated facility location problem.

A fast and efficient discrete evolutionary algorithm for the uncapacitated facility location problem

In order to solve the uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP) quickly and effectively, an enhanced group theory-based optimization algorithm (EGTOA) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a new local search operator, One Direction Mutation Operator, is proposed, which is suitable for solving UFLP. Secondly, a Redundant Checking Strategy is presented to further optimize the quality of feasible solutions. To verify the performance of EGTOA, 15 benchmark instances of UFLP is selected in OR-Library, the comparison results with the 16 existing algorithms show that the solution obtained by EGTOA is better than other algorithms, moreover its speed is much faster than state-of-the-art algorithms. These demonstrates that EGTOA is a fast and effective algorithm for solving UFLP.

A human learning optimization algorithm with competitive and cooperative learning

Human learning optimization (HLO) is a simple yet powerful metaheuristic developed based on a simplified human learning model. Competition and cooperation, as two basic modes of social cognition, can motivate individuals to learn more efficiently and improve their efficiency in solving problems by stimulating their competitive instincts and increasing interaction with each other. Inspired by this fact, this paper presents a novel human learning optimization algorithm with competitive and cooperative learning (HLOCC), in which a competitive and cooperative learning operator (CCLO) is developed to mimic competition and cooperation in social interaction for enhancing learning efficiency. The HLOCC can efficiently maintain the diversity of the algorithm as well as achieve the optimal values, demonstrating that the proposed CCLO can effectively improve algorithm performance. HLOCC has been compared with other heuristic algorithms on CEC2017 functions. In the second study, the uncapacitated facility location problems (UFLPs) which are one of the pure binary optimization problems are solved with HLOCC. The experimental results show that the developed HLOCC is superior to previous HLO variants and other metaheuristics with its improved exploitation and exploration abilities.

Battle Royale Optimizer for solving binary optimization problems

<h2>Abstract</h2> Battle Royale Optimizer (BRO) is a recently proposed metaheuristic optimization algorithm used only in continuous problem spaces. The BinBRO is a binary version of BRO. The BinBRO algorithm employs a differential expression, which utilizes a dissimilarity measure between binary vectors instead of a vector subtraction operator, used in the original BRO algorithm to find the nearest neighbor. To evaluate BinBRO, we applied it to two popular benchmark datasets: the uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP) and the maximum-cut (Max-Cut) graph problems from OR-Library. An open-source MATLAB implementation of BinBRO is available on CodeOcean and GitHub websites.

An Improved Genetic Algorithm for the Uncapacitated Facility Location Problem and Applications in Oil and Gas Fields

Uncapacitated Facility Location Problem (UFLP) is a NP-hard Problem that to determine the optimal Location of facilities. In this paper, the general Genetic Algorithm (gGA) is first introduced and adopted to solve a small case of UFLP (case1). Then an improved genetic algorithm (iGA) based on real coding is proposed to solve the UFLP problem. This paper mainly makes appropriate adjustments in the selection of fitness function, crossover operator and mutation operator to be more suitable for UFLP. Facilities thus can be roughly allocated according to the cost of facilities and the demands of customers. Case2 was calculated by several CAP data (CAP101, CAP103, CAP104, CAP131, CAP133, CAPB and CAPC) in OR-LIBRORY. The results proved that the iGA is feasible and effective, and it is found that 80% of the results obtained by the iGA are within 0.05% of the optimal solutions. Compared with several other common algorithms, the advantages of iGA increase as the scale of calculation increases. Finally, applying iGA to an on-site oilfield pipeline network, it was found that it can find the optimal solution in a short time.
