Teleseismic Indication of Magmatic and Tectonic Activities at Slow- and Ultraslow-Spreading Ridges

Magmatic and tectonic processes in the formation of oceanic lithosphere at slow–ultraslow-spreading mid-ocean ridges (MORs) are more complicated relative to faster-spreading ridges, as their melt flux is overall low, with highly spatial and temporal variations. Here, we use the teleseismic catalog of magnitudes over 4 between 1995 and 2020 from the International Seismological Center to investigate the characteristics of magmatic and tectonic activities at the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge and Arctic Gakkel Ridge and the slow-spreading North Mid-Atlantic Ridge and Carlsberg Ridge (total length of 14,300 km). Using the single-link cluster analysis technique, we identify 78 seismic swarms (≥8 events), 877 sequences (2–7 events), and 3543 single events. Seismic swarms often occur near the volcanic center of second-order segments, presumably relating to relatively robust magmatism. By comparing the patterns of seismicity between ultraslow- and slow-spreading ridges, and between melt-rich and melt-poor regions of the Southwest Indian Ridge with distinct seafloor morphologies, we demonstrate that a lower spreading rate and a lower melt supply correspond to a higher seismicity rate and a higher potential of large volcano-induced seismic swarms, probably due to a thicker and colder lithosphere with a higher degree of along-axis melt focusing there.

Contrasting Cu isotopes in mid-ocean ridge basalts and lower oceanic crust: Insights into the oceanic crustal magma plumbing systems

Magma plumbing systems exert strong controls on the formation and evolution of the oceanic crust during crust accretion. However, plumbing system dynamics based largely on mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) are extremely difficult to constrain because the MORBs are aggregated melts and original information may have been blurred. Copper isotopic compositions of lower crustal gabbroic cumulates effectively archive early-stage histories because sulfides constitute the dominant Cu budget of gabbroic cumulates and are largely isolated from subsequent magma filtering processes. Here, we present Cu isotopes of a suite of gabbroic cumulates from the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (Hole U1473A), and MORBs from the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge and East Pacific Rise. The δ65Cu of the MORBs from this study (+0.04 ‰ to +0.19 ‰) match those of previous MORB analyses, indicating uniform δ65Cu at various spreading rates. In contrast, the δ65Cu of gabbroic rocks vary significantly (−1.14 ‰ to 0.87 ‰), exceeding by far the range known for peridotites. The Cu budget of these gabbroic rocks is hosted in sulfides and the mantle-like S isotopic compositions of sulfides indicate their origin of igneous processes. These results thus suggest that magma accumulation and sulfide segregation would lead to notable Cu isotopic fractionation in the lower oceanic crust. We propose that repeated recharging of primitive melts and efficient mixing of melts within the plumbing system can buffer the removal of early 63Cu-rich sulfides from sulfide-saturated MORBs. The discrepancy in δ65Cu between lower oceanic crust and MORBs is a natural consequence of continuous replenishment that occurs concurrently with melt-rock interaction, mixing, crystallization and extraction, irrespective of the oceanic settings. The consistent δ65Cu in MORBs (0.09 ± 0.08 ‰) and komatiites (0.06 ± 0.06 ‰) further indicates that their Cu isotopes reflect the mean mantle source composition, providing a robust δ65Cu for bulk silicate Earth (BSE) of 0.08 ± 0.08 ‰ (2sd). Accordingly, we propose that in open sub-ridge plumbing systems, other incompatible element isotopes and ratios of elements with similar incompatibility in MORBs as Cu isotopes suggest, could also represent mean mantle source compositions.

Evidence of a distal axis inactive high-temperature hydrothermal field on the ultraslow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge: Insights from mineralogy and geochemistry studies

The development of hydrothermal activities on mid-ocean ridges is primarily influenced by magmatic and tectonic activities close to the ridge axis. On slow and ultraslow spreading ridges featured by limited magma supply, prolonged hydrothermal activity can also occur in non-transform offsets (NTO), where sustained ultramafic-related hydrothermal circulation happens due to prolonged hydrothermal processes associated with the expose of ultramafic rocks. In contrast, basalt-hosted hydrothermal fields are barely developed in NTOs, especially in off-axis area, due to insufficient magma supply. In this study, we reported the occurrence of a distal axis (∼9.5 km) basalt-hosted hydrothermal field (50.63°E) on the NTO of segment 27 of the ultraslow spreading Southwest Indian ridge. The hydrothermal products are characterized by layered crusts mainly composed of oxides, such as limonite and goethite, rich in Fe and depleted in Si. These crusts contain high contents of trace elements derived from seawater, such as P, As, Mo, U, and Sb and show REE pattens with negative Eu and mostly positive Ce anomalies. However, the high Cu content (1.82 ± 0.89 wt%, N = 27), low absorption ratio of Cu (18.39 ± 12.71%, N = 9), and residual chalcopyrite altered by goethite suggest prior high-temperature hydrothermal activity. Lead isotopic composition with basaltic rocks signatures that distinct from those of low-temperature crusts of seawater origin also support this conclusion. The Fe-rich crusts appears to be the result of high-temperature sulfides altered by late-stage low-temperature diffuse flow. This field is currently the furthest known distal axis basalt-hosted hydrothermal field located in NTOs of ultraslow spreading ridges. The hydrothermal circulation is likely due to a combination of off-axis normal fault and gabbro diking. Our results emphasize the occurrence of distal axis basalt-hosted high-temperature hydrothermal activities on NTOs of ultraslow spreading ridges, and may lead to an increased estimation of hydrothermal heat and chemical influx to the ocean.

Fe-Cu-Zn Isotopic Compositions in Polymetallic Sulfides from Hydrothermal Fields in the Ultraslow-Spreading Southwest Indian Ridge and Geological Inferences

Submarine hydrothermal sulfides from the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) were sampled from three hydrothermal fields, and the Fe-Cu-Zn isotopic compositions were analyzed in this study. The Fe isotopes ranged from −0.011‰ to −1.333‰. We believe the processes controlling the Fe isotope variability in the hydrothermal systems include the sulfide precipitation process, the initial isotopic composition of the hydrothermal fluid, and the temperature during precipitation. Among these factors, the sulfide precipitation process is the dominant one. The Cu isotope compositions of the sulfides varied from −0.364‰ to 0.892‰, indicating that the hydrothermal fluid preferentially leached 65Cu in the early stages and that hydrothermal reworking led to decreases in the Cu isotopes in the later stages. In addition, because mass fractionation occurred during sulfide precipitation, the Zn isotope variations ranged from −0.060‰ to 0.422‰. Combined with the S isotopic compositions, these results also implied that different Fe-Cu-Zn isotopic fractionation mechanisms prevailed for the different sample types. Based on these results, we are sure that the metallic elements, including Fe, Cu, and Zn, were derived from the mantle in the SWIR hydrothermal field, and the Fe-Cu isotope results indicated that these metallic elements were provided by fluid leaching processes. Using the isotopic fractionation and sulfide results, we calculated that the Fe-Cu-Zn isotopic compositions of the hydrothermal fluid in this field were δ56Fe(fluid): −0.8~0.0‰; δ65Cu(fluid): 0.3~1.3‰; and δ66Zn(fluid): 0~0.48‰.

Seismic observation of an active detachment faulting system beneath the Longqi hydrothermal field at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian ridge

Hydrothermal processes in detachment settings at slow and ultraslow spreading ridges differ greatly from those at melt-rich faster spreading ridges. Active detachment faulting provides the possibility for off-axis high-temperature hydrothermal vents located far away from the heat source beneath the axial volcanic ridge. Seismic data from the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge revealed that hydrothermal fluids may exploit detachment faults to extract heat from a melt zone near the crust-mantle interface. However, knowledge of the subsurface structure and the kinematic processes of detachment faults, and their interaction with hydrothermal fields at the slowest spreading ridges is still insufficient. Here, we report new insights on the seismicity beneath the Longqi hydrothermal field at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian ridge from three ocean bottom seismometer monitoring experiments. The seismicity outlines the subsurface geometry of a detachment faulting system (DF1 and DF2). The strongly flexed DF1 (45°) is a mature detachment fault with a domed-shaped OCC where ultramafic rocks are exposed on the seafloor. An active young DF2 with intense earthquake activity along the steep subsurface (67°) suggests the initiation phase of rotation. The diversity of hydrothermal activities in the Longqi detachment-hydrothermal systems is closely related to the evolution of detachment faults. Additionally, both the non-transform discontinuity on the western margin of the Longqi-1 field and local faults facilitate hydrothermal circulation. Our study provides baseline observations for a Longqi-type of hydrothermal circulation at the inside corner associated with detachment faulting and non-transform offsets.

Evolution of enhanced magmatism at the ultraslow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge between 46°E and 53.5°E

The Indomed-Gallieni supersegment (46-52°E) of the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) has been of interest as a melt-rich endmember of ultraslow spreading mid-ocean ridges, attributed to enhanced magmatism since 11 Ma. This provides an excellent opportunity to study the evolution and the impact of enhanced magmatism at mid-ocean ridges. Here we combine shipboard bathymetry and gravity data over the SWIR 46-53.5°E. We illustrate that the enhanced magmatism initiated in the western part of the Indomed-Gallieni supersegment with decreasing crustal productions and no propagation. In the eastern part, the enhanced magmatism propagated to the east at decreasing propagating velocities, producing an increasingly thick crust. The present propagation tip is at 51.9°E, ∼30 km to the west of the Gallieni transform fault (TF). The most magmatically-robust area of the propagation has been located near 50.5°E since ∼6 Ma. We hypothesize that a mantle melting anomaly with heterogenous upwelling rates and/or geometry was responsible for the change of the enhanced magmatism. The enhanced magmatism plays significant roles in ridge segmentation and seafloor spreading modes. The degree of along-axis melt focusing was lowered, causing the segmentation to be typical of slow spreading ridges. As magmatism dramatically decreases over 160 km along the ridge axis from the most robust (producing a 9.5-km-thick crust at 50.5°E) to nearly-amagmatic near the Gallieni TF, this ridge section exhibits the full spectrum of ultraslow spreading modes, changing from magmatically-controlled (intense volcanism and almost no faulting) to tectonically-dominated (smooth ridges and extensive peridotites outcrops) modes.

Hydroacoustic Study of a Seismic Swarm in 2016–2017 near the Melville Transform Fault on the Southwest Indian Ridge

ABSTRACT Hydroacoustic monitoring has become particularly efficient for studying the low-magnitude seismicity occurring at mid-ocean ridges. In 2016–2017, a seismic swarm occurred near the Melville transform fault of the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean. It comprised 258 events in the land-based International Seismological Centre catalog, extending from June 2016 to March 2017. We examined this seismicity using hydroacoustic records from three to nine hydrophones moored in the southern Indian Ocean from the Hydroacoustic Observatory of Seismicity and Biodiversity in the Indian Ocean (OHASISBIO) temporary network and the International Monitoring System of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization. We detected 27,624 hydroacoustic events spanning 298 days (1 June 2016–25 March 2017) with lower localization and origin time errors. These include several energetic, short-duration impulsive events, which we interpret as due to lava–water interactions on the seafloor. The spatio-temporal distribution of all the detected events does not show clear tectonic mainshock–aftershock sequences and suggests a magmatic origin of the swarm with bursts of seismicity likely caused by dike emplacements.

Arc signatures in abyssal peridotites and its implications

Investigating mass exchanges between the subduction zones and mid-ocean ridges provides essential clues to understanding recycling process and mantle convection in the Earth's mantle. In this study, we found evidence of recycled subduction signals in the abyssal peridotites from mid-ocean ridges through their extremely low bulk (Dy/Yb)N and bulk Al2O3, which could not be explained by normal decompression melting at mid-ocean ridges, but required a hydrous melting history. We show here that abyssal peridotites from the fast-spreading Pacific Oceanic Ridges (East-Pacific Rise and Pacific-Antarctic Ridge), to the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge and to the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge, require increasing amount of slab-derived fluid in their mantle sources. Therefore, the subduction influence on abyssal peridotites is independent of the spreading rates of the overlying ridges. Locations, such as the Fifteen-Twenty Fracture Zone, the Rainbow Massif from the MAR and the Hess Deep from EPR, have abyssal peridotites overlap well with forearc peridotites, suggesting that the prominent characteristics of arc mantle wedge could be preserved in abyssal peridotites when the traveling distance or time is short for the recycled arc mantle migrating in the mantle convection flow. The well-preserved subduction-related signature in ridge areas that are relatively proximal to modern subduction zones imply that mass exchanges between the subduction zones and mid-ocean ridges may be more efficient than previously thought.

Quantifying the influence of magmatism and tectonism on ultraslow-spreading-ridge hydrothermal activity: Evidence from the Southwest Indian Ridge

Hydrothermal activity in mid-ocean ridges (MORs) is an important intermediary for the mass and heat exchange between the ocean and lithosphere. The development of hydrothermal activity on MORs is primarily controlled by coupled magmatic and tectonic activities. In ultraslow-spreading ridges, deep-dipping low-angle normal faults with large offsets, typically detachment faults in the inside corners of ridge offsets, favor the formation of tectonic-related hydrothermal activities, whereas volcanic-related hydrothermal fields are typically developed in neovolcanic zones in this category of the ridge system. However, whether tectonic or magmatic activity is dominant and to what extent they control the formation of hydrothermal activities on ultraslow-spreading ridges remain unclear. Segments in the west and east of the Gallieni transform fault (TF) located in the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR), namely, western area (WA) and eastern area (EA), exhibit distinct magma-supply conditions that provide favorable conditions for examining the influence of magmatic and tectonic activities. We generated prediction models for these areas using the spatial analysis of the water depth, minor faults, large faults, ridge axis, nontransform discontinuity (NTD) inside corners, TF inside corners, Bouguer gravity anomaly, magnetic anomalies, and seismic activities. By employing the weights of evidence method, we reported that the formation of seafloor hydrothermal systems in SWIR was primarily correlated to the NTD inside corner, ridge axis, and minor fault (i.e., contrast values (C) of 4.186, 3.727, and 3.482 in WA and 4.278, 3.769, and 3.135 in EA). Furthermore, EA was significantly affected by the TF inside corner (C = 3.501), whereas WA was influenced by large faults (C = 4.062). Our results demonstrated that tectonism was the primary controlling factor in the development of hydrothermal activities in the study area, and the contribution of magmatism was secondary, even in WA, which has a relatively robust magma supply. We delimited prominent prospecting areas at each side based on posterior probability. Our results provided insights into the formation mechanisms of hydrothermal activities and support prospecting in MORs.

Microseismicity and lithosphere thickness at a nearly-amagmatic oceanic detachment fault system

Oceanic detachment faults play a central role in accommodating the plate divergence at slow-ultraslow spreading mid-ocean ridges. Successive flip-flop detachment faults in a nearly-amagmatic region of the ultraslow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) at 64°30’E accommodate ~100% of plate divergence, with mostly ultramafic smooth seafloor. Here we present microseismicity data, recorded by ocean bottom seismometers, showing that the axial brittle lithosphere is on the order of 15 km thick under the nearly-amagmatic smooth seafloor, which is no thicker than under nearby volcanic seafloor or at more magmatic SWIR detachment systems. Our data reveal that microearthquakes with normal focal mechanisms are colocated with seismically-imaged damage zones of the active detachment fault and of antithetic hanging-wall faults. The level of the hanging-wall seismicity is significantly higher than that documented at more magmatic detachments of slow-ultraslow ridges, which may be a unique feature of nearly-amagmatic flip-flop detachment systems.

Shallow recycling of lower continental crust: The Mahoney Seamount at the Southwest Indian Ridge

The Mahoney Seamount is a recently discovered volcanic edifice located 4 km north of the ultra-slow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). The SWIR is one of the slowest spreading ridges worldwide with a full spreading rate of ∼14 mm/year and low magmatic productivity. We report that highly vesicular basalts from the Mahoney Seamount have unradiogenic Nd-Hf together with radiogenic Sr isotopic compositions. Their distinct low 206Pb/204Pb isotope signature combined with high 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb is best explained by melting of a mantle that has been strongly influenced by stranded lower continental crust. The geographic distribution of the isotopic variability favors the idea of shallow recycling of lower continental crust isolated for a longer period contributing to melts forming Mahoney Seamount through off-axis fault systems. The isotopic composition of Mahoney Seamount lavas shares many characteristics with EM-1 sources and the DUPAL signature. Previous isotopic studies of the SWIR basalts proposed recycling of ancient subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) or pelagic sediments with oceanic crust to be responsible for this enriched isotopic signature. Lu/Hf and Sm/Nd ratios of pelagic sediments would result in decoupled 143Nd/144Nd and 176Hf/177Hf ratios. This decoupling is also observed in Ejeda-Bekily dikes from Madagascar, but those are believed to sample the SCLM dispersed in the Indian Ocean. However, Mahoney Seamount shows no decoupling in those isotopic systems and the restricted occurrence of the extreme lower continental crustal signature at Mahoney Seamount implies that the enriched isotopic signature has a different origin.

Shear wave velocity structure and crustal lithology beneath the ultraslow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge at 50° E

SUMMARY Shear wave velocities provide an important constraint on crustal lithology. Limited crustal shear wave data are available from the ultraslow spreading mid-ocean ridges. We combine observations of both compressional (P) and shear (S) waves in ocean–bottom seismometer data from the Southwest Indian Ridge to determine crustal P-wave velocity (Vp), S-wave velocity (Vs), Vp/Vs and Poisson's ratio variations along the ridge at 49°17′E–50°49′E. Similar layered crustal structures were revealed beneath both the magmatically robust segment centres (Vp/Vs of 1.76–1.94, Poisson's ratio of 0.26–0.32) and the non-transform discontinuity (NTD) between them (Vp/Vs of 1.76–2.03 and Poisson's ratio of 0.26–0.34). Because laboratory measurements show an overlap in Poisson's ratio between mafic igneous and ultramafic rocks, particularly at Vp values typical of oceanic Layer 3, it can be difficult to distinguish crustal composition using this parameter only. However, our observed Vp gradients of 0.1 ± 0.1 s−1 suggest that in this area, oceanic Layer 3 consists primarily of mafic igneous rocks both at segment centres and at the NTD. Oceanic crustal Layers 2A and 2B above are likely also to consist of mafic igneous rocks, with some evidence for increased fracturing at the NTD.

First record of sponge-associated deep-sea polychaete (Polynoidae: Bathymoorea) on the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge

We identified a rarely found deep-sea polynoid polychaete Bathymoorea, in association with a hexactinellid sponge (Dictyaulus sp.) during our marine mineral exploration expedition in the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). The genus Bathymoorea appears to be restricted to the deep sea and currently includes two valid species described from the northeast Pacific region. The polychaete specimen was part of the megabenthos sample collected in a benthic sledge associated with a sponge from a water depth of 2358 m. The sponge-associated Bathymoorea is described and illustrated based on a single specimen and is the first occurrence of the genus Bathymoorea in the Southwest Indian Ocean. The morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of Bathymoorea using Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit 1 (COI), 16S, and 18S gene sequences confirmed the monophyly clade for the SWIR specimen. Our finding extends the known geographical distribution of the genus Bathymoorea to the Indian Ocean.

Metagenomic Features Characterized with Microbial Iron Oxidoreduction and Mineral Interaction in Southwest Indian Ridge.

The Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is one of the typical representatives of deep-sea ultraslow-spreading ridges, and has increasingly become a hot spot of studying subsurface geological activities and deep-sea mining management. However, the understanding of microbial activities is still limited on active hydrothermal vent chimneys in SWIR. In this study, samples from an active black smoker and a diffuse vent located in the Longqi hydrothermal region were collected for deep metagenomic sequencing, which yielded approximately 290 GB clean data and 295 mid-to-high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). Sulfur oxidation conducted by a variety of Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Campylobacterota was presumed to be the major energy source for chemosynthesis in Longqi hydrothermal vents. Diverse iron-related microorganisms were recovered, including iron-oxidizing Zetaproteobacteria, iron-reducing Deferrisoma, and magnetotactic bacterium. Twenty-two bacterial MAGs from 12 uncultured phyla harbored iron oxidase Cyc2 homologs and enzymes for organic carbon degradation, indicated novel chemolithoheterotrophic iron-oxidizing bacteria that affected iron biogeochemistry in hydrothermal vents. Meanwhile, potential interactions between microbial communities and chimney minerals were emphasized as enriched metabolic potential of siderophore transportation, and extracellular electron transfer functioned by multi-heme proteins was discovered. Composition of chimney minerals probably affected microbial iron metabolic potential, as pyrrhotite might provide more available iron for microbial communities. Collectively, this study provides novel insights into microbial activities and potential mineral-microorganism interactions in hydrothermal vents. IMPORTANCE Microbial activities and interactions with minerals and venting fluid in active hydrothermal vents remain unclear in the ultraslow-spreading SWIR (Southwest Indian Ridge). Understanding about how minerals influence microbial metabolism is currently limited given the obstacles in cultivating microorganisms with sulfur or iron oxidoreduction functions. Here, comprehensive descriptions on microbial composition and metabolic profile on 2 hydrothermal vents in SWIR were obtained based on cultivation-free metagenome sequencing. In particular, autotrophic sulfur oxidation supported by minerals was presumed, emphasizing the role of chimney minerals in supporting chemosynthesis. Presence of novel heterotrophic iron-oxidizing bacteria was also indicated, suggesting overlooked biogeochemical pathways directed by microorganisms that connected sulfide mineral dissolution and organic carbon degradation in hydrothermal vents. Our findings offer novel insights into microbial function and biotic interactions on minerals in ultraslow-spreading ridges.

Gravity Data Reveal New Evidence of an Axial Magma Chamber Beneath Segment 27 in the Southwest Indian Ridge

Hydrothermal systems are integral to mid-ocean ridge activity; they form massive seafloor sulfide (SMS) deposits rich in various metallic elements, which are potential mineral resources. Since 2007, many hydrothermal fields have been discovered along the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). The Duanqiao hydrothermal field is located at segment 27’s axis between the Indomed and Gallieni transform faults; tomography models reveal an obvious low-velocity anomaly beneath it, indicating a possible axial magma chamber (AMC). However, confirmation of an AMC’s existence requires further study and evidence. In this study, we first calculated the gravity effect to identify the heterogeneous distribution of crustal density beneath segment 27 and the surrounding area. Next, we used the gravity-inversion method to obtain the crustal density structure beneath the study area. The results indicate that a thickened crust and low-density crustal materials exist beneath segment 27. The low-density anomaly in the lower crust beneath the Duanqiao hydrothermal field suggests the existence of an AMC covered with a cold and dense upper crust. The density results identify several faults, which provide potential channels for magma migration. In addition, the melt migrates westward and redistributes laterally toward the segment’s western end. However, when migrating toward the segment’s eastern end, the melt is affected by a rapid cooling mechanism. Therefore, the segment’s ends present different density features and morphologies of nontransform discontinuities (NTDs).

The lower oceanic crust at ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge: The inside story

Owing to the lack of persistent magma chamber and the complex interplay between magmatism and tectonism at slow- to ultraslow-spreading ridges, the likeliness of fractional crystallization being the predominant process of evolution of crustal magmas is weak. Here, we report a detailed petro-geochemical investigation from the lower crustal gabbroic rocks recovered from Hole U1473A in Atlantis Bank oceanic core complex, Southwest Indian Ridge that may potentially provide new insights on the dynamic accretion process at ultraslow-spreading ridge. Sampling the entire lithological spectrum encompassing a single geochemical cycle in this study permit us to probe the underlying magmatic processes in ultraslow-spreading lower crust. Grain-size variation is ubiquitously recorded in the gabbroic lithologies of Hole U1473A, where fine-grained intervals represent relatively evolved chemistry than the coarser domains. This suggests that, they were crystallized from a common genetic melt during different degrees of evolution. The forward geochemical modelling approach have not only affirmed the long-established theory of assimilation (of early mushes’ crystals)-fractional crystallization to be the key mechanism in lower crust formation, but also provided explanation for the restricted whole rock geochemical cluster observed throughout all the rock types. We demonstrate for the first time the relationship between the progressive modal mineralogical evolution with respect to the different assimilation/fractionation ratios (r). The observed trend has been successfully replicated for the experiments with high r values = 0.8–0.9, previously predicted from this region. Integrating all results, our study supports the model of lower crustal formation via reactive porous flow of the squeezed-out melt percolating throughout the cumulate pile and segregated into different horizons.

3D self-potential tomography of seafloor massive sulfide deposits using an autonomous underwater vehicle

Seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits contain abundant metals, such as Cu, Zn, Au, and Ag, which are of growing economic interest. Currently, the exploration of SMS deposits has entered into a new stage of resource assessment, so we need a geophysical method to rapidly obtain the 3D structure of these SMS deposits. We report here a self-potential (SP) survey performed with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) at the Yuhuang hydrothermal field on the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge with a water depth ranging from 1300 m to 2200 m. The electric-field sensors are attached to the tail of the AUV to record the electric field approximately 50 m above the seafloor. The electric field strength is observed to reach an amplitude of 0.6 mV/m at this known SMS deposit. SP tomography is used to obtain the 3D structure of the ore body, and benchmark numerical tests are first performed on synthetic cases to optimize the inversion algorithm parameters to estimate the ore location. The 3D SP tomography reveals a south-sloping ore body, which is 100 m long in the north–south direction and nearly 200 m long in the east–west direction. The vertical extent of the ore body is approximately 100 m. These results suggest that an AUV-based SP survey and tomography are potentially useful exploration methods to characterize the geometry of SMS deposits. This method may play an important role in resource assessment in concert with other geophysical methods, such as magnetic and induced-polarization surveys.

Oxidizing fluids associated with detachment hosted hydrothermal systems: Example from the Suye hydrothermal field on the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge

The redox state of hydrothermal fluids on mid-ocean ridges, which is indirectly affected by the depth of hydrothermal circulation and crustal permeability, plays an important role on the diversity of hydrothermal precipitates and associated ecosystems. Primary hydrothermal fluids that circulate along detachment faults are generally reducing as a result of the serpentinization of ultramafic rocks, while significant seawater infiltration may shift the redox state from reducing to oxidizing. However, the depth of penetration of oxidizing fluids into detachment related systems remain unclear, largely because current observations are based primarily on hydrothermal products that precipitated at the seafloor. Here, we report the first observations of oxidizing mineral assemblages in stockwork samples from the Suye hydrothermal field on the ultraslow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge. This field is hosted by mafic lithologies, while the low As, high Ni and Co contents, and high Au/As, Ag/As, and Ni/As ratios in pyrite from the stockwork samples indicate that the fluids reacted with both mafic and ultramafic rocks in the subseafloor. The high δ34S values (average of 9.8‰) indicate a high proportion (up to 50%) of seawater derived reduced sulfur involved in the stockwork zone formation. The high homogenization temperatures (∼320 °C) and salinity (∼12 wt.% NaCl) of fluid inclusions indicate that the stockwork zone of Suye was formed by a fluid that underwent phase separation deeper in the system that was subsequently diluted by 4–5 times subsurface seawater. The deep penetration of seawater is facilitated by the unique tectonic setting of the Suye hydrothermal field, which occurs between the two stage detachment faults that creates high permeability. Our findings demonstrate that hydrothermal fluid associated with detachment faults could be oxidized below the subsurface stockwork zone, and that deep-rooted detachment faults at ultraslow-spreading ridges can sustain both reducing and oxidizing hydrothermal systems in the same fault system. These results call for a reevaluation of the fate of base metal in ultramafic hosted hydrothermal fields.
