Spatiotemporal sculpturing of light: a tutorial

Spatiotemporal sculpturing of light pulses with sophisticated structures on demand is one major goal of the everlasting pursuit of ultrafast information transmission and processing as well as ultraintense energy concentration and extraction using light. It may hold the key to unlocking new extraordinary fundamental physical effects. Traditionally, spatiotemporal light pulses are treated as spatiotemporally separable wave packets as a solution to Maxwell’s equations. In the past decade, more generalized forms of spatiotemporally nonseparable solution started to emerge with growing importance for their striking physical effects. This tutorial intends to provide the necessary basics on how to sculpture light in the spatiotemporal domain to realize spatiotemporal structures on demand and highlight some of the recent advances in the creation and characterization of increasingly complex spatiotemporal wave packets. These spatiotemporally separable to complex nonseparable states with diverse geometric and topological structures exhibit unique physical properties during propagation, focusing, and interaction with matter. The broad potential applications as well as outlook and future trends and open challenges in this field are presented.

Light-driven nanoscale vectorial currents.

Controlled charge flows are fundamental to many areas of science and technology, serving as carriers of energy and information, as probes of material properties and dynamics1 and as a means of revealing2,3 or even inducing4,5 broken symmetries. Emerging methods for light-based current control5-16 offer particularly promising routes beyond the speed and adaptability limitations of conventional voltage-driven systems. However, optical generation and manipulation of currents at nanometre spatial scales remains a basic challenge and a crucial step towards scalable optoelectronic systems for microelectronics and information science. Here we introduce vectorial optoelectronic metasurfaces in which ultrafast light pulses induce local directional charge flows around symmetry-broken plasmonic nanostructures, with tunable responses and arbitrary patterning down to subdiffractive nanometre scales. Local symmetries and vectorial currents are revealed by polarization-dependent and wavelength-sensitive electrical readout and terahertz (THz) emission, whereas spatially tailored global currents are demonstrated in the direct generation of elusive broadband THz vector beams17. We show that, in graphene, a detailed interplay between electrodynamic, thermodynamic and hydrodynamic degrees of freedom gives rise to rapidly evolving nanoscale driving forces and charge flows under the extremely spatially and temporally localized excitation. These results set the stage for versatile patterning and optical control over nanoscale currents in materials diagnostics, THz spectroscopies, nanomagnetism and ultrafast information processing.

Ultrafast spin dynamics in magnetic trimer and tetramer clusters: a step towards prototypic spin-SHIFT registers

Ultrafast magnetic dynamics is a necessary ingredient for magnetic recording and ultrafast information processing. The shift functionality, although not mandatory for Boolean logic, is always implemented in CMOS CPUs and therefore must be also present in magnetic logic. In this respect, using ab initio calculations we show ultrafast spin dynamics in molecular clusters such as Co3 +CO and Ni4. In this work, we establish that clusters with magnetic atoms can provide a theoretical toolbox for efficient spin charge dynamics whose operation time can range up to a few picoseconds. The prime underlying mechanism for all spin manipulation scenarios in the above mentioned clusters are laser-induced Λ processes where the laser parameters are fully optimized using a genetic algorithm. In general, a structural asymmetry enforces substantial spin localization on the active centers of both magnetic clusters. Keeping in mind the shift functionality, we theoretically suggest a series of spin-transfer scenarios between the Co and Ni atoms in each of these two clusters independently to construct a 3-bit and a 4-bit cyclic spin-SHIFT register, respectively. The maximum operational time for both logic devices is 2 ps, which is much faster than the response time of conventional spintronic devices. Additionally, for a better understanding of the transfer cycles, their feasibility and reversibility are also investigated through the analysis of the optical spectra of the related states. Our results provide important theoretical guidance for ultrafast spin manipulation in molecular structures as well as their potential spin functionality, and thus step closer to the realization of future spin-based logic devices and quantum computation. This effectively motivates the investigation and precise establishment of the shift functionality in magnetic trimers and tetramers.

Self-Rectifying All-Optical Modulated Optoelectronic Multistates Memristor Crossbar Array for Neuromorphic Computing.

Researching optoelectronic memristors capable of integrating sensory and processing functions is essential for advancing the development of efficient neuromorphic vision. Here, we experimentally demonstrated an all-optical controlled and self-rectifying optoelectronic memristor (OEM) crossbar array with the function of multilevel storage under light stimuli. The NiO/TiO2 device exhibits an ultrahigh (>104) rectifying ratio (RR) thus overcoming the presence of sneak current. The reversible conductance modulation without electric signal involvement provides a novel way to realize ultrafast information processing. The proposed OEM array realized synaptic functions observed in the human brain, including long-term potentiation (LTP), long-term depression (LTD), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), the transition from short-term memory (STM) to long-term memory (LTM), and learning experience behaviors successfully. The authors present a novel OEM crossbar that possesses complete light-modulation capabilities, potentially advancing the future development of efficient neuromorphic vision.

Ultrafast nonlinear absorption in MoTe2 and MoTe2/MoS2 nanocomposite films and its application to all-optical logic gates

We present a detailed theoretical analysis of ultrafast saturable absorption (SA) and reverse SA (RSA) in MoTe2 nano-films with femtosecond (fs) laser pulses at 800 nm. A transition from RSA to SA occurs on increasing the thickness from 30 nm to 80 nm at a constant pump intensity of 141 GW cm−2. On the other hand, a transition from SA to RSA occurs upon increasing the pump intensity in an 80 nm thick MoTe2 nano-film. Theoretical results are in good agreement with reported experimental results. The effect of pump pulse intensity, pulse width, nonlinear absorption coefficient and sample thickness has been studied to optimize the SA ↔ RSA transition. The results for low-power and high contrast all-optical switching in MoTe2 nano-films have been used to design all-optical fs NOT, OR, AND, as well as the universal all-optical NOR and NAND logic gates. The SA behavior of MoTe2/MoS2 nanocomposite films has been used to design all-optical AND and OR logic gates. The nanocomposite films of MoTe2/MoS2 possess a larger nonlinear optical response in comparison to MoTe2 and MoS2 nano-films and, therefore, all-optical logic gates designed using nanocomposite films result in a good switching contrast compared to pure MoTe2 nano-films. Ultrafast operation at relatively low pump intensities demonstrates the applicability of MoTe2 and MoTe2/MoS2 nano-films for ultrafast all-optical information processing.

Active control of mid-wavelength infrared non-linearity in silicon photonic crystal slab.

Natural materials' inherently weak nonlinear response demands the design of artificial substitutes to avoid optically large samples and complex phase-matching techniques. Silicon photonic crystals are promising artificial materials for this quest. Their nonlinear properties can be modulated optically, paving the way for applications ranging from ultrafast information processing to quantum technologies. A two-dimensional 15-μm-thick silicon photonic structure, comprising a hexagonal array of air holes traversing the slab's thickness, has been designed to support a guided resonance for the light with a wavelength of 4-μm. At the resonance conditions, a transverse mode of the light is strongly confined between the holes in the "veins" of the silicon component. Owing to the confinement, the structure exhibits a ratio of nonlinear to linear absorption coefficients threefold higher than the uniform silicon slab of the same thickness. A customised time-resolved Z-scan method with provisions to accommodate ultrafast pump-probe measurements was used to investigate and quantify the non-linear response. We show that optically pumping free charge carriers into the structure decouples the incoming light from the resonance and reduces the non-linear response. The time-resolved measurements suggest that the decoupling is a relatively long-lived effect on the scale comparable to the non-radiative recombination in the bulk material. Moreover, we demonstrate that the excited free carriers are not the source of the nonlinearity, as this property is determined by the structure design.

The structure of the radiation field of a symmetric slot line perpendicular to the edge of an infinite half-plane, taking into account the cross-polarization component

Background. Symmetric slot lines on a perfectly reflecting half-plane are good mathematical models for slot antennas on an ideal plane of finite dimensions, which in practice have a high gain and operate over a wide frequency band. These antennas are used in ultra-fast information processing systems based on microwave and optical volume integrated circuits. Aim. The work presents a solution to the problem of radiation of a perfectly reflecting half-plane, which was excited by a symmetric slot line with a different law of slot expansion. Methods. The problem was solved by the Fourier variable separation method, by which the Green tensor function was obtained, which connects the two components of the antenna radiation field with the excitation field in the gap. Results. It is shown that in the far zone, the radiation field of an ideally reflecting half-plane has two components: the main and crosspolarization. The Green tensor function has a complex form and consists of two terms. The analysis of the Green tensor function shows the participation of each term in the formation of a field in the far zone, demonstrates the mechanism of radiation and leads to known special cases for slot radiators. Conclusion. The validity of the presented mathematical model is confirmed by experimental research.

Generating optical cat states via quantum interference of multi-path free-electron–photons interactions

The novel quantum effects induced by the free-electron–photons interaction have attracted increasing interest due to their potential applications in ultrafast quantum information processing. Here, we propose a scheme to generate optical cat states based on the quantum interference of multi-path free-electron–photons interactions that take place simultaneously with strong coupling strength. By performing a projection measurement on the electron, the state of light changes significantly from a coherent state into a non-Gaussian state with either Wigner negativity or squeezing property, both possess metrological power to achieve quantum advantage. More importantly, we show that the Wigner negativity oscillates with the coupling strength, and the optical cat states are successfully generated with high fidelity at all the oscillation peaks. This oscillation reveals the quantum interference effect of the multiple quantum pathways in the interaction of the electron with photons, by that various nonclassical states of light are promising to be fast prepared and manipulated. These findings inspire further exploration of emergent quantum phenomena and advanced quantum technologies with free electrons.

Energy‐Saving High‐Bandwidth Perovskite Sub‐Micro‐Encoder

AbstractOptical coding is widely applied in communication and data processing fields due to its practical and powerful characteristics, such as high transmission rate and operational convenience. However, improvements in the loading information capacity of optical encoders always result in increased energy consumption. It is a challenge to realize an optical encoder that combines energy savings, high bandwidth, and miniaturization. Here, both the concept and the demonstration of a perovskite sub‐micro‐encoder with an 84% energy‐saving efficiency and a tunable bandwidth of up to 200 GHz are reported. The way to code the radiative dynamics of the light source allows for the reduction of unnecessary energy consumption from the initial stage through the control of the radiation core. Moreover, the miniature encoder generates code sequences of good coherence, stimulating the development of perovskite‐based optical microchips for ultrafast information processing.

Light-Triggered Reversible Tuning of Second-Harmonic Generation in a Photoactive Plasmonic Molecular Nanocavity.

The ultrasmall mode volume and ultralarge local field enhancement of compact plasmonic nanocavities have been widely explored to amplify a variety of optical phenomena at the nanoscale. Other than passively generating near-field enhancements, dynamic tuning of their intensity and associated nonlinear optical processes such as second-harmonic generation (SHG) play vital roles in the field of active nanophotonics. Here we apply a host-guest molecular complex to construct a photoswitchable molecule-sandwiched metallic particle-on-film nanocavity (MPoFN) and demonstrate both light-controlled linear and nonlinear optical tuning. Under alternating illumination of ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, the photoactive plasmonic molecular nanocavity shows reversible switching of both surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and plasmon resonance. Surprisingly, we observe more significant modulation of SHG from this photoactive MPoFN, which can be explained qualitatively by the quantum conductivity theory (QCT). Our study could pave the way for developing miniaturized integrated optical circuits for ultrafast all-optical information processing and communication.

Nanosecond Memristor Based on Oxygen Vacancy Engineering in SrTiO3 Single Crystal

AbstractMemristors are of great significance for the construction of memory devices and neuromorphological computing, which need a fast response time for ultrahigh data storage, ultrafast information processing, and efficient neuromorphic computing. Currently, memristors based on perovskite oxide materials generally have a long response time. In this paper, the electroforming‐free memristive behavior based on Ar+ irradiating induced oxygen vacancy modulation in SrTiO3 (STO) has been investigated. The Ag/STO/(Ta/Pt) device shows a stable bipolar resistive switching (RS) characteristic and can realize ultrafast multi‐resistance switching behavior. More importantly, its conductance can be continuously controlled with short pulse on the nanosecond scale to simulate potentiation and depression of synapse, promising potential application in ultra‐fast biological synapse and high‐efficiency training of neural networks. More importantly, the defect engineering strategy used in this work provides more freedom for the design and optimization of versatile memristor devices.

Third-Order Optical Nonlinearities of 2D Materials at Telecommunications Wavelengths

All-optical signal processing based on nonlinear optical devices is promising for ultrafast information processing in optical communication systems. Recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with unique structures and distinctive properties have opened up new avenues for nonlinear optics and the fabrication of related devices with high performance. This paper reviews the recent advances in research on third-order optical nonlinearities of 2D materials, focusing on all-optical processing applications in the optical telecommunications band near 1550 nm. First, we provide an overview of the material properties of different 2D materials. Next, we review different methods for characterizing the third-order optical nonlinearities of 2D materials, including the Z-scan technique, third-harmonic generation (THG) measurement, and hybrid device characterization, together with a summary of the measured n2 values in the telecommunications band. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives are discussed.

Broadband and efficient asymmetric wavefront manipulation via terahertz polarization-selective metasurface

Asymmetric manipulation of electromagnetic waves exhibits tremendous capabilities in the applications of encryption, ultrafast information processing, and communication. However, compact and broadband terahertz (THz) components for asymmetric applications are still scarce. Here, we demonstrate broadband, ultrathin, and efficient metasurface-based asymmetric transmission and wavefront manipulation in the THz region. The metasurface consists of tri-layer metallic structures separated by two flexible polyimide dielectrics. This ultrathin structure exhibits superior asymmetric response which can act as an efficient device with a high linear polarization conversion ratio over 0.9 ranging from 0.5 to 1.1 THz. We also develop THz asymmetric applications based on the flexible metasurface for beam deflector and orbital angular momentum generation. The THz time-domain spectroscopy system and spectral imaging system are used to characterize the broadband asymmetric properties. The experimental results confirm that the beam deflection and vortex waves can be realized over broadband under one linearly polarized incidence while blocked under its orthogonal incidence. This work may provide a promising route to achieve broadband asymmetric applications in information encryption, THz wireless communication, and spectroscopy applications.

Optical-acoustic excitation of broadband terahertz antiferromagnetic spin waves

We propose an optical-acoustic means to excite broadband terahertz antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin wave in a metal/insulator/antiferromagnet heterostructure. The AFM spin wave is excited by an ultrafast strain wave triggered by a femtosecond pulsed laser based on photoacoustic conversion. This spin wave comprises an AFM exchange spin wave and a magnetoelastic spin wave. Their dispersion curves are overlapped in a wide frequency range by manipulating the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction, which is accompanied by lifting the degeneration of the spin-wave modes with opposite chirality. This optical-acoustic excitation of spin waves exploits the laser-induced ultrafast strain waves and avoids the thermal effect from the laser. It paves a way to develop novel AFM devices that can apply for ultrafast information processing and communication.

Femtojoule femtosecond all-optical switching in lithium niobate nanophotonics

Optical nonlinear functions are crucial for various applications in integrated photonics, including all-optical information processing1, photonic neural networks2,3 and on-chip ultrafast light sources4,5. However, the weak native nonlinearity of most nanophotonic platforms has imposed barriers for such functions by necessitating large driving energies, high-Q cavities or integration with other materials with stronger nonlinearity. Here we effectively utilize the strong and instantaneous quadratic nonlinearity of lithium niobate nanowaveguides for the realization of cavity-free all-optical switching. By simultaneous engineering of the dispersion and quasi-phase matching, we design and demonstrate a nonlinear splitter that can achieve ultralow switching energies down to 80 fJ, featuring a fastest switching time of ~46 fs and a lowest energy–time product of 3.7 × 10−27 J s in integrated photonics. Our results can enable on-chip ultrafast and energy-efficient all-optical information processing, computing systems and light sources.

Efficient exciton generation in a semiconductor quantum-dot–metal-nanoparticle composite structure using conventional chirped pulses

We consider a nanostructure consisting of a semiconductor quantum dot coupled to a metal nanoparticle, and show with numerical simulations that the exciton state of the quantum dot can be robustly generated from the ground state even for small interparticle distances, using conventional chirped pulses with Gaussian and hyperbolic secant envelopes. The asymmetry observed in the final exciton population with respect to the chirp sign of the applied pulses is explained using the nonlinear density matrix equations describing the system, and is attributed to the real part of the parameter emerging from the interaction between excitons in the quantum dot and plasmons in the metal nanoparticle. The simplicity of the conventional chirped pulses, which can also be easily implemented in the laboratory, make the proposed robust quantum control scheme potentially useful for the implementation of ultrafast nanoswitches and quantum information processing tasks with semiconductor quantum dots.

Ultralow-power all-optical switching via a chiral Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

It is a challenge for all-optical switching to simultaneous achieve ultralow power consumption, broad bandwidth and high extinction ratio. We experimentally demonstrate an ultralow-power all-optical switching by exploiting chiral interaction between light and optically active material in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We achieve switching extinction ratio of 20.0 ± 3.8 and 14.7 ± 2.8 dB with power cost of 66.1 ± 0.7 and 1.3 ± 0.1 fJ/bit, respectively. The bandwidth of our all-optical switching is about 4.2 GHz. Moreover, our all-optical switching has the potential to be operated at few-photon level. Our scheme paves the way towards ultralow-power and ultrafast all-optical information processing.

Interacting plexcitons for designed ultrafast optical nonlinearity in a monolayer semiconductor

Searching for ideal materials with strong effective optical nonlinear responses is a long-term task enabling remarkable breakthroughs in contemporary quantum and nonlinear optics. Polaritons, hybridized light-matter quasiparticles, are an appealing candidate to realize such nonlinearities. Here, we explore a class of peculiar polaritons, named plasmon–exciton polaritons (plexcitons), in a hybrid system composed of silver nanodisk arrays and monolayer tungsten-disulfide (WS2), which shows giant room-temperature nonlinearity due to their deep-subwavelength localized nature. Specifically, comprehensive ultrafast pump–probe measurements reveal that plexciton nonlinearity is dominated by the saturation and higher-order excitation-induced dephasing interactions, rather than the well-known exchange interaction in traditional microcavity polaritons. Furthermore, we demonstrate this giant nonlinearity can be exploited to manipulate the ultrafast nonlinear absorption properties of the solid-state system. Our findings suggest that plexcitons are intrinsically strongly interacting, thereby pioneering new horizons for practical implementations such as energy-efficient ultrafast all-optical switching and information processing.

All-optical switch based on novel physics effects

All-optical switches are among the most important parts of integrated photonics. Ultrahigh speed and ultralow energy consumption are two necessary indexes of all-optical switches. Traditionally, all-optical switches are based on concepts such as micro-ring resonators, surface plasmon polaritons, photonic crystals, and metamaterials. However, such platforms cannot satisfy the demand for high performance of all-optical switches. To overcome the limited response time and energy consumption, recent studies have introduced new applications of such physics as parity–time symmetry, exceptional points, topological insulators, and bound states in a continuum. Such physical concepts not only provide promising research avenues for the all-optical switch but also broaden the design channel. This is expected to achieve ultracompact, ultrafast, and high-capacity all-optical information processing.

Ultrafast spatiotemporal control of directional launching of surface plasmon polaritons in a plasmonic nano coupler

Ultrafast spatiotemporal control of a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) launch direction is a prerequisite for ultrafast information processing in plasmonic nanocircuit components such as ultrafast on–off of plasmonic switching and information recording. Here we realize for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, ultrafast spatiotemporal control of the preferential launch direction of an SPP at the nano-femtosecond scale via a plasmonic nano directional coupler. The spatiotemporal switching of the SPP field was revealed using time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy (TR-PEEM). Experimental results show that the extinction ratio of the SPP directional coupler can be substantially optimized by properly selecting the amplitude and time delay of the two incident light pulses in the experiment. More importantly, we demonstrate a solution for the launch direction of the SPP field, switched in a plasmonic nano directional coupler on the femtosecond timescale, by adjusting the instantaneous polarization state of the excitation light. The TR-PEEM images are supported by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. We believe the results of this study can be used to develop high-speed, miniaturized signal processing systems.
