Photo-induced structural dynamics of o-nitrophenol by ultrafast electron diffraction.

The photo-induced dynamics of o-nitrophenol, particularly its photolysis, has garnered significant scientific interest as a potential source of nitrous acid in the atmosphere. Although the photolysis products and preceding photo-induced electronic structure dynamics have been investigated extensively, the nuclear dynamics accompanying the non-radiative relaxation of o-nitrophenol on the ultrafast timescale, which include an intramolecular proton transfer step, have not been experimentally resolved. Herein, we present a direct observation of the ultrafast nuclear motions mediating photo-relaxation using ultrafast electron diffraction. This work spatiotemporally resolves the loss of planarity which enables access to a conical intersection between the first excited state and the ground state after the proton transfer step, on the femtosecond timescale and with sub-Angstrom resolution. Our observations, supported by ab initio multiple spawning simulations, provide new insights into the proton transfer mediated relaxation mechanism in o-nitrophenol.

Prediction through quantum dynamics simulations: Photo-excited cyclobutanone.

Quantum dynamics simulations are becoming a standard tool for simulating photo-excited molecular systems involving a manifold of coupled states, known as non-adiabatic dynamics. While these simulations have had many successes in explaining experiments and giving details of non-adiabatic transitions, the question remains as to their predictive power. In this work, we present a set of quantum dynamics simulations on cyclobutanone using both grid-based multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree and direct dynamics variational multi-configuration Gaussian methods. The former used a parameterized vibronic coupling model Hamiltonian, and the latter generated the potential energy surfaces on the fly. The results give a picture of the non-adiabatic behavior of this molecule and were used to calculate the signal from a gas-phase ultrafast electron diffraction (GUED) experiment. Corresponding experimental results will be obtained and presented at a later stage for comparison to test the predictive power of the methods. The results show that over the first 500fs after photo-excitation to the S2 state, cyclobutanone relaxes quickly to the S1 state, but only a small population relaxes further to the S0 state. No significant transfer of population to the triplet manifold is found. It is predicted that the GUED experiments over this time scale will see signals related mostly to the C-O stretch motion and elongation of the molecular ring along the C-C-O axis.

A comparative review of time-resolved x-ray and electron scattering to probe structural dynamics.

The structure of molecules, particularly the dynamic changes in structure, plays an essential role in understanding physical and chemical phenomena. Time-resolved (TR) scattering techniques serve as crucial experimental tools for studying structural dynamics, offering direct sensitivity to molecular structures through scattering signals. Over the past decade, the advent of x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) and mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV-UED) facilities has ushered TR scattering experiments into a new era, garnering significant attention. In this review, we delve into the basic principles of TR scattering experiments, especially focusing on those that employ x-rays and electrons. We highlight the variations in experimental conditions when employing x-rays vs electrons and discuss their complementarity. Additionally, cutting-edge XFELs and MeV-UED facilities for TR x-ray and electron scattering experiments and the experiments performed at those facilities are reviewed. As new facilities are constructed and existing ones undergo upgrades, the landscape for TR x-ray and electron scattering experiments is poised for further expansion. Through this review, we aim to facilitate the effective utilization of these emerging opportunities, assisting researchers in delving deeper into the intricate dynamics of molecular structures.

Ultrafast electron diffraction of photoexcited gas-phase cyclobutanone predicted by abinitio multiple cloning simulations.

We present the result of our calculations of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) for cyclobutanone excited into the S2 electronic state, which is based on the non-adiabatic dynamics simulations with the Ab Initio Multiple Cloning (AIMC) method with the electronic structure calculated at the SA(3)-CASSCF(12,12)/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The key features in the UED pattern were identified, which can be used to distinguish between the reaction pathways observed in the AIMC dynamics, although there is a significant overlap between representative signals due to the structural similarity of the products. The calculated UED pattern can be compared with the experiment.

The photochemistry of Rydberg-excited cyclobutanone: Photoinduced processes and ground state dynamics.

Owing to ring strain, cyclic ketones exhibit complex excited state dynamics with multiple competing photochemical channels active on the ultrafast timescale. While the excited state dynamics of cyclobutanone after π* ← n excitation into the lowest-energy excited singlet (S1) state has been extensively studied, the dynamics following 3s ← n excitation into the higher-lying singlet Rydberg (S2) state are less well understood. Herein, we employ fully quantum multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) simulations using a model Hamiltonian as well as "on-the-fly" trajectory-based surface-hopping dynamics (TSHD) simulations to study the relaxation dynamics of cyclobutanone following 3s ← n excitation and to predict the ultrafast electron diffraction scattering signature of these relaxation dynamics. Our MCTDH and TSHD simulations indicate that relaxation from the initially-populated singlet Rydberg (S2) state occurs on the timescale of a few hundreds of femtoseconds to a picosecond, consistent with the symmetry-forbidden nature of the state-to-state transition involved. There is no obvious involvement of excited triplet states within the timeframe of our simulations (<2ps). After non-radiative relaxation to the electronic ground state (S0), vibrationally hot cyclobutanone has sufficient internal energy to form multiple fragmented products including C2H4 + CH2CO (C2; 20%) and C3H6 + CO (C3; 2.5%). We discuss the limitations of our MCTDH and TSHD simulations, how these may influence the excited state dynamics we observe, and-ultimately-the predictive power of the simulated experimental observable.

Design of a kilohertz repetition rate, low-emittance S-band photoinjector

Low-emittance photoinjector-enabled cutting-edge scientific instruments, such as free-electron lasers, inverse Compton scattering light sources, and ultrafast electron diffraction, will greatly benefit from the improved repetition rate. In this paper, we proposed a specifically designed S-band radio frequency (RF) photoinjector to obtain low emittance and kilohertz (kHz) high-repetition rates simultaneously. By lowering the gradient, much lower RF power is needed to feed the electron gun, and then the heat problem is much easier to handle. Meanwhile, by optimizing the length of the gun’s first cell from the normal case of 0.6-cell to 0.4-cell, the launch phase and the extraction field are significantly improved, thus ensuring the generation of low-emittance electron beams. In our design, the proposed 1.4-cell RF gun can work effectively under different field gradients ranging from 30 MV/m to 100 MV/m. For a standard case of 60 MV/m, 2.5 MW peak RF power with μs level pulse width is sufficient, thus offering the feasibility of improving the repetition rate to kHz level with a standard 5 MW irradiation klystron. In addition, simulated electron beams with a low emittance of 0.29 mm.mrad@200 pC can be generated by this proposed photoinjector, showing that this high-repetition rate injector holds the potential to deliver high-quality beams comparable to those of state-of-the-art S-band photoinjectors. Combining the merits of low emittance and high-repetition rate, this proposed photoinjector will provide a new possibility for future free-electron laser facilities operating at repetition rates ranging from kHz to tens of kHz.

Predicting the photodynamics of cyclobutanone triggered by a laser pulse at 200nm and its MeV-UED signals-A trajectory surface hopping and XMS-CASPT2 perspective.

This work is part of a prediction challenge that invited theoretical/computational chemists to predict the photochemistry of cyclobutanone in the gas phase, excited at 200nm by a laser pulse, and the expected signal that will be recorded during a time-resolved megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV-UED). We present here our theoretical predictions based on a combination of trajectory surface hopping with XMS-CASPT2 (for the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics) and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics with MP2 (for the athermal ground-state dynamics following internal conversion), coined (NA+BO)MD. The initial conditions were sampled from Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics coupled to a quantum thermostat. Our simulations indicate that the main photoproducts after 2ps of dynamics are CO + cyclopropane (50%), CO + propene (10%), and ethene and ketene (34%). The photoexcited cyclobutanone in its second excited electronic state S2 can follow two pathways for its nonradiative decay: (i) a ring-opening in S2 and a subsequent rapid decay to the ground electronic state, where the photoproducts are formed, or (ii) a transfer through a closed-ring conical intersection to S1, where cyclobutanone ring opens and then funnels to the ground state. Lifetimes for the photoproduct and electronic populations were determined. We calculated a stationary MeV-UED signal [difference pair distribution function-ΔPDF(r)] for each (interpolated) pathway as well as a time-resolved signal [ΔPDF(r,t) and ΔI/I(s,t)] for the full swarm of (NA+BO)MD trajectories. Furthermore, our analysis provides time-independent basis functions that can be used to fit the time-dependent experimental UED signals [both ΔPDF(r,t) and ΔI/I(s,t)] and potentially recover the population of photoproducts. We also offer a detailed analysis of the limitations of our model and their potential impact on the predicted experimental signals.

Prediction challenge: First principles simulation of the ultrafast electron diffraction spectrum of cyclobutanone.

Computer simulation has long been an essential partner of ultrafast experiments, allowing the assignment of microscopic mechanistic detail to low-dimensional spectroscopic data. However, the ability of theory to make a priori predictions of ultrafast experimental results is relatively untested. Herein, as a part of a community challenge, we attempt to predict the signal of an upcoming ultrafast photochemical experiment using state-of-the-art theory in the context of preexisting experimental data. Specifically, we employ abinitio Ehrenfest with collapse to a block mixed quantum-classical simulations to describe the real-time evolution of the electrons and nuclei of cyclobutanone following excitation to the 3s Rydberg state. The gas-phase ultrafast electron diffraction (GUED) signal is simulated for direct comparison to an upcoming experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory. Following initial ring-opening, dissociation via two distinct channels is observed: the C3 dissociation channel, producing cyclopropane and CO, and the C2 channel, producing CH2CO and C2H4. Direct calculations of the GUED signal indicate how the ring-opened intermediate, the C2 products, and the C3 products can be discriminated in the GUED signal. We also report an a priori analysis of anticipated errors in our predictions: without knowledge of the experimental result, which features of the spectrum do we feel confident we have predicted correctly, and which might we have wrong?

Unusual photoinduced crystal structure dynamics in TaTe2 with double zigzag chain superstructure

Transition metal dichalcogenides with superperiodic lattice distortions have been widely investigated as the platform of ultrafast structural phase manipulations. Here we performed ultrafast electron diffraction on RT TaTe2, which exhibits a peculiar double zigzag chain pattern of Ta atoms. From the time-dependent electron diffraction pattern, we revealed a photoinduced change in the crystal structure occurring within <0.5 ps, although there is no corresponding high-temperature equilibrium phase. We further clarified the slower response (∼1.5 ps) reflecting the lattice thermalization. Our result suggests the unusual ultrafast crystal structure dynamics specific to the non-equilibrium transient process in TaTe2.

A CASSCF/MRCI trajectory surface hopping simulation of the photochemical dynamics and the gas phase ultrafast electron diffraction patterns of cyclobutanone.

We present the simulation of the photochemical dynamics of cyclobutanone induced by the excitation of the 3s Rydberg state. For this purpose, we apply the complete active space self-consistent field method together with the spin-orbit multireference configuration interaction singles treatment, combined with the trajectory surface hopping for the inclusion of nonadiabatic effects. The simulations were performed in the spin-adiabatic representation, including nine electronic states derived from three singlet and two triplet spin-diabatic states. Our simulations reproduce the two previously observed primary dissociation channels: the C2 pathway yielding C2H4 + CH2CO and the C3 pathway producing c-C3H6 + CO. In addition, two secondary products, CH2 + CO from the C2 pathway and C3H6 from the C3 pathway, both of them previously reported, are also observed in our simulation. We determine the ratio of the C3:C2 products to be about 2.8. Our findings show that most of the trajectories reach their electronic ground state within 200fs, with dissociation events finished after 300fs. We also identify the minimum energy conical intersections that are responsible for the relaxation and provide an analysis of the photochemical reaction mechanism based on multidimensional scaling. Furthermore, we demonstrate a minimal impact of triplet states on the photodissociation mechanism within the observed timescale. In order to provide a direct link to experiments, we simulate the gas phase ultrafast electron diffraction patterns and connect their features to the underlying structural dynamics.

Cross-examination of photoinitiated carrier and structural dynamics of black phosphorus at elevated fluences.

Revived attention in black phosphorus (bP) has been tremendous in the past decade. While many photoinitiated experiments have been conducted, a cross-examination of bP's photocarrier and structural dynamics is still lacking. In this article, we provide such analysis by examining time-resolved data acquired using optical transient reflectivity and reflection ultrafast electron diffraction, two complementary methods under the same experimental conditions. At elevated excitation fluences, we find that more than 90% of the photoinjected carriers are annihilated within the first picosecond (ps) and transfer their energy to phonons in a nonthermal, anisotropic fashion. Electronically, the remaining carrier density around the band edges induces a significant interaction that leads to an interlayer lattice contraction in a few ps but soon diminishes as a result of the continuing loss of carriers. Structurally, phonon-phonon scattering redistributes the energy in the lattice and results in the generation of out-of-plane coherent acoustic phonons and thermal lattice expansion. Their onset times at ∼6ps are found to be in good agreement. Later, a thermalized quasi-equilibrium state is reached following a period of about 40-50ps. Hence, we propose a picture with five temporal regimes for bP's photodynamics.

Photofragmentation of cyclobutanone at 200nm: TDDFT vs CASSCF electron diffraction.

To simulate a 200nm photoexcitation in cyclobutanone to the n-3s Rydberg state, classical trajectories were excited from a Wigner distribution to the singlet state manifold based on excitation energies and oscillator strengths. Twelve singlet and 12 triplet states are treated using TD-B3LYP-D3/6-31+G** for the electronic structure, and the nuclei are propagated with the Tully surface hopping method. Using time-dependent density functional theory, we are able to predict the bond cleavage that takes place on the S1 surface as well as the ultrafast deactivation from the Rydberg n-3s state to the nπ*. After showing that triplet states and higher-lying singlet states do not play any crucial role during the early dynamics (i.e., the first 300fs), the SA(6)-CASSCF(8,11)/aug-cc-pVDZ method is used as an electronic structure and the outcome of the non-adiabatic dynamic simulations is recomputed. Gas-phase ultrafast electron diffraction spectra are computed for both electronic structure methods, showing significantly different results.

Quantum tomography of molecules using ultrafast electron diffraction.

We propose a quantum tomography (QT) approach to retrieve the temporally evolving reduced density matrix in electronic state basis, where the populations and coherence between the ground state and excited state are reconstructed from the ultrafast electron diffraction signal. In order to showcase the capability of the proposed QT approach, we simulate the nuclear wavepacket dynamics and ultrafast electron diffraction of photoexcited pyrrole molecules using the abinitio quantum chemical CASSCF method. From the simulated time-resolved diffraction data, we retrieve the evolving density matrix in a crude diabatic representation basis and reveal the symmetry of the excited pyrrole wavepacket. Our QT approach opens the route to make a quantum version of "molecular movie" that covers the electronic degree of freedom and equips ultrafast electron diffraction with the power to reveal the coherence between electronic states, relaxation, and dynamics of population transfer.

Improved temporal resolution in ultrafast electron diffraction measurements through THz compression and time-stamping.

We present an experimental demonstration of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) with THz-driven electron bunch compression and time-stamping that enables UED probes with improved temporal resolution. Through THz-driven longitudinal bunch compression, a compression factor of approximately four is achieved. Moreover, the time-of-arrival jitter between the compressed electron bunch and a pump laser pulse is suppressed by a factor of three. Simultaneously, the THz interaction imparts a transverse spatiotemporal correlation on the electron distribution, which we utilize to further enhance the precision of time-resolved UED measurements. We use this technique to probe single-crystal gold nanofilms and reveal transient oscillations in the THz near fields with a temporal resolution down to 50 fs. These oscillations were previously beyond reach in the absence of THz compression and time-stamping.

High energy electron diffraction instrument with tunable camera length.

Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) stands as a powerful technique for real-time observation of structural dynamics at the atomic level. In recent years, the use of MeV electrons from radio frequency guns has been widely adopted to take advantage of the relativistic suppression of the space charge effects that otherwise limit the temporal resolution of the technique. Nevertheless, there is not a clear choice for the optimal energy for a UED instrument. Scaling to beam energies higher than a few MeV does pose significant technical challenges, mainly related to the inherent increase in diffraction camera length associated with the smaller Bragg angles. In this study, we report a solution by using a compact post-sample magnetic optical system to magnify the diffraction pattern from a crystal Au sample illuminated by an 8.2 MeV electron beam. Our method employs, as one of the lenses of the optical system, a triplet of compact, high field gradients (>500 T/m), small-gap (3.5 mm) Halbach permanent magnet quadrupoles. Shifting the relative position of the quadrupoles, we demonstrate tuning the magnification by more than a factor of two, a 6× improvement in camera length, and reciprocal space resolution better than 0.1 Å-1 in agreement with beam transport simulations.

Structural dynamics at surfaces by ultrafast reflection high-energy electron diffraction.

Many fundamental processes of structural changes at surfaces occur on a pico- or femtosecond timescale. In order to study such ultrafast processes, we have combined modern surface science techniques with fs-laser pulses in a pump-probe scheme. Grazing incidence of the electrons ensures surface sensitivity in ultrafast reflection high-energy electron diffraction (URHEED). Utilizing the Debye-Waller effect, we studied the nanoscale heat transport from an ultrathin film through a hetero-interface or the damping of vibrational excitations in monolayer adsorbate systems on the lower ps-timescale. By means of spot profile analysis, the different cooling rates of epitaxial Ge nanostructures of different size and strain state were determined. The excitation and relaxation dynamics of a driven phase transition far away from thermal equilibrium is demonstrated using the In-induced (8 × 2) reconstruction on Si(111). This Peierls-distorted surface charge density wave system exhibits a discontinuous phase transition of first order at 130 K from a (8 × 2) insulating ground state to (4 × 1) metallic excited state. Upon excitation by a fs-laser pulse, this structural phase transition is non-thermally driven in only 700 fs into the excited state. A small barrier of 40 meV hinders the immediate recovery of the ground state, and the system is found in a metastable supercooled state for up to few nanoseconds.

Vector-based feedback of continuous wave radiofrequency compression cavity for ultrafast electron diffraction.

The temporal resolution of ultrafast electron diffraction at weakly relativistic beam energies (100 keV) suffers from space-charge induced electron pulse broadening. We describe the implementation of a radio frequency (RF) cavity operating in the continuous wave regime to compress high repetition rate electron bunches from a 40.4 kV DC photoinjector for ultrafast electron diffraction applications. Active stabilization of the RF amplitude and phase through a feedback loop based on the demodulated in-phase and quadrature components of the RF signal is demonstrated. This scheme yields 144 ± 19 fs RMS temporal resolution in pump-probe studies.

High bunch charge low-energy electron streak diffraction

For time-resolved diffraction studies of irreversible structural dynamics upon photoexcitation, there are constraints on the number of perturbation cycles due to thermal effects and accumulated strain, which impact the degree of crystal order and spatial resolution. This problem is exasperated for surface studies that are more prone to disordering and defect formation. Ultrafast electron diffraction studies of these systems, with the conventional stroboscopic pump–probe protocol, require repetitive measurements on well-prepared diffraction samples to acquire and average signals above background in the dynamic range of interest from few tens to hundreds of picoseconds. Here, we present ultrafast streaked low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) that demands, in principle, only a single excitation per nominal data acquisition timeframe. By exploiting the space–time correlation characteristics of the streaking method and high-charge 2 keV electron bunches in the transmission geometry, we demonstrate about one order of magnitude reduction in the accumulated number of the excitation cycles and total electron dose, and 48% decrease in the root mean square error of the model fit residual compared to the conventional time-scanning measurement. We believe that our results demonstrate a viable alternative method with higher sensitivity to that of nanotip-based ultrafast LEED studies relying on a few electrons per a single excitation, to access to all classes of structural dynamics to provide an atomic level view of surface processes.

Monitoring the Evolution of Relative Product Populations at Early Times during a Photochemical Reaction.

Identifying multiple rival reaction products and transient species formed during ultrafast photochemical reactions and determining their time-evolving relative populations are key steps toward understanding and predicting photochemical outcomes. Yet, most contemporary ultrafast studies struggle with clearly identifying and quantifying competing molecular structures/species among the emerging reaction products. Here, we show that mega-electronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction in combination with ab initio molecular dynamics calculations offer a powerful route to determining time-resolved populations of the various isomeric products formed after UV (266 nm) excitation of the five-membered heterocyclic molecule 2(5H)-thiophenone. This strategy provides experimental validation of the predicted high (∼50%) yield of an episulfide isomer containing a strained three-membered ring within ∼1 ps of photoexcitation and highlights the rapidity of interconversion between the rival highly vibrationally excited photoproducts in their ground electronic state.

Hidden phonon highways promote photoinduced interlayer energy transfer in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures.

Vertically stacked van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures exhibit unique electronic, optical, and thermal properties that can be manipulated by twist-angle engineering. However, the weak phononic coupling at a bilayer interface imposes a fundamental thermal bottleneck for future two-dimensional devices. Using ultrafast electron diffraction, we directly investigated photoinduced nonequilibrium phonon dynamics in MoS2/WS2 at 4° twist angle and WSe2/MoSe2 heterobilayers with twist angles of 7°, 16°, and 25°. We identified an interlayer heat transfer channel with a characteristic timescale of ~20 picoseconds, about one order of magnitude faster than molecular dynamics simulations assuming initial intralayer thermalization. Atomistic calculations involving phonon-phonon scattering suggest that this process originates from the nonthermal phonon population following the initial interlayer charge transfer and scattering. Our findings present an avenue for thermal management in vdW heterostructures by tailoring nonequilibrium phonon populations.
