Manipulation of geometric parametric sidebands via elliptical Gaussian beam in graded-index multimode fibers

Geometric parametric instability is a class of processes where the revival of optical beam in a nonlinear multimode graded-index fiber induces a spatial index modification and in turn generates frequency sidebands due to space-time coupling. While current studies have been focusing on breathing Gaussian beams in such settings, the evenly spaced eigenvalue in parabolic fiber indicates that any input condition will experience self-imaging effects under linear conditions. Here we investigate the nonlinear propagation and the corresponding geometric parametric instability sidebands generation associated with elliptical Gaussian beams where the long- and short- axis of the beam oscillates with different phases. We show that, depending on the initial conditions, there are four possible propagation regimes: over-trapping, self-trapping, under-trapping and self-focusing. As a result, the spacing and strength of generated sidebands can be judiciously tuned by the elliptical ratio of elliptical Gaussian beams. At certain conditions, missing-order effect occurs where a set of sidebands completely disappear. We experimentally observed the multiple and a few sidebands of the Gaussian beam and elliptical Gaussian beam in a standard graded-index multimode fiber. In addition, experiments show that GPI sidebands have well-defined and stable bell-shaped near-field profiles. These results pave the way for developing tunable light sources and ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation.

AlGaAs Nonlinear Integrated Photonics.

Practical applications implementing integrated photonic circuits can benefit from nonlinear optical functionalities such as wavelength conversion, all-optical signal processing, and frequency-comb generation, among others. Numerous nonlinear waveguide platforms have been explored for these roles; the group of materials capable of combining both passive and active functionalities monolithically on the same chip is III–V semiconductors. AlGaAs is the most studied III–V nonlinear waveguide platform to date; it exhibits both second- and third-order optical nonlinearity and can be used for a wide range of integrated nonlinear photonic devices. In this review, we conduct an extensive overview of various AlGaAs nonlinear waveguide platforms and geometries, their nonlinear optical performances, as well as the measured values and wavelength dependencies of their effective nonlinear coefficients. Furthermore, we highlight the state-of-the-art achievements in the field, among which are efficient tunable wavelength converters, on-chip frequency-comb generation, and ultra-broadband on-chip supercontinuum generation. Moreover, we overview the applications in development where AlGaAs nonlinear functional devices aspire to be the game-changers. Among such applications, there is all-optical signal processing in optical communication networks and integrated quantum photonic circuits.

Far-IR to deep-UV adaptive supercontinuum generation using semiconductor nano-antennas via carrier injection rate modulation

Supercontinuum generating sources, which incorporate a non-linear medium that can generate a wideband intensity spectrum under high-power excitation, are ideal for many applications of photonics such as spectroscopy and imaging. Supercontinuum generation using ultra-miniaturized devices is of great interest for on-chip imaging, on-chip measurement, and for future integrated photonic devices. In this study, semiconductor nano-antennas are proposed for ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation via analytical and numerical investigation of the electric field wave equation and the Lorentz dispersion model, incorporating semiconductor electron dynamics under optical excitation. It is shown that by a rapid modulation of the carrier injection rate for a semiconductor nano-antenna, one can generate an ultra-wideband supercontinuum that extends from the far-infrared (Far-IR) range to the deep-ultraviolet (Deep-UV) range for an infrared excitation of arbitrary intensity level. The modulation of the injection rate is achieved by high-intensity pulsed-pump irradiation of the nano-antenna, which has a fast nonradiative electron recombination mechanism that is on the order of sub-picoseconds. It is shown that when the pulse period of the pump irradiation is of the same order with the electron recombination time, rapid modulation of the free electron density occurs and electric energy accumulates in the nano-antenna, allowing for the generation of a broad supercontinuum. The numerical results are compared with the semiempirical second harmonic generation efficiency results for validation and a mean accuracy of 99.7% is observed. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that semiconductor nano-antennas can be employed to achieve superior supercontinuum generation performance at the nanoscale and the process can be programmed in an adaptive manner for continuous spectral shaping via tuning the pulse period of the pump irradiation.

Ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation in gas-filled photonic-crystal fibers: the epsilon-near-zero regime.

In this Letter, we show theoretically that the nonlinear photoionization process of a noble gas inside a hollow-core photonic-crystal fiber can be exploited in obtaining broadband supercontinuum generation via pumping close to the mid-infrared regime. The interplay between the Kerr and photoionization nonlinearities is strongly enhanced in this regime. Photoionization continuously modifies the medium dispersion, in which the refractive index starts to significantly decrease and approach the epsilon-near-zero regime. Subsequently, the self-phase modulation induced by the Kerr effect is boosted because of the accompanied slow-light effect. As a result of this interplay, an output spectrum that comprises a broadband light with multiple dispersive wave emission is obtained.

Predicting ultrafast nonlinear dynamics in fibre optics with a recurrent neural network

The propagation of ultrashort pulses in optical fibre plays a central role in the development of light sources and photonic technologies, with applications from fundamental studies of light–matter interactions to high-resolution imaging and remote sensing. However, short pulse dynamics are highly nonlinear, and optimizing pulse propagation for application purposes requires extensive and computationally demanding numerical simulations. This creates a severe bottleneck in designing and optimizing experiments in real time. Here, we present a solution to this problem using a recurrent neural network to model and predict complex nonlinear propagation in optical fibre, solely from the input pulse intensity profile. We highlight particular examples in pulse compression and ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation, and compare neural network predictions with experimental data. We also show how the approach can be generalized to model other propagation scenarios for a wider range of input conditions and fibre systems, including multimode propagation. These results open up novel perspectives in the modelling of nonlinear systems, for the development of future photonic technologies and more generally in physics for studies in Bose–Einstein condensates, plasma physics and hydrodynamics.

Ultra-broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in photonic-crystal pillar waveguides pumped at 1.82 μm

In this paper, we theoretically investigate the supercontinuum generation (SCG) spanning from near-infrared (NIR) to mid-infrared utilizing a novel photonic-crystal pillar waveguide (PCPW). The PCPW design and associated dispersion properties have been thoroughly studied and optimized, resulting in a flat and low dispersion profile from 1.67 to 7.31 µm with four zero dispersion wavelengths. Pumped at a relatively shorter NIR wavelength of 1.82 µm, the SCG of optimized PCPW possesses an ultra-broadband spectral broadening from 1 to 10 µm under pump pulses with a low peak power of 2 kW. The proposed PCPW can thus provide an efficient waveguide structure to generate ultra-broadband supercontinuum pumped by shorter wavelength laser sources of less peak power.

Design and analysis of suspended core channel waveguide made using As2Se3 glass system for mid-infrared supercontinuum generation

In this study, we propose a promising 5 mm long air-clad suspended core channel waveguide made of As2Se3 chalcogenide glass for ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation (SCG) in the mid-infrared (MIR). The linear analysis of the proposed waveguide is carried out numerically by considering the potential application of pump sources at three different wavelength regions such as 1.55, 2.8, and 3.5 µm. Among several waveguide geometries analyzed, numerical simulation for SCG at the output of an optimized structure shows that a flat supercontinuum coverage from 1.5 to 15 µm can be predicted using a pump at 3.5 µm with a moderate peak power of 2000 W. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this would be the broadest spectra in the MIR by the suspended planar waveguide design. In addition, waveguide structural imperfection has also been discussed as it is difficult to control the waveguide dimensions during the fabrication process precisely. The effect of possible deviations along the transverse dimensions is rigorously analyzed and an imperfection among the several deviations is found which could lead to a substantial supercontinuum bandwidth reduction at the waveguide output. Finally, the degree of coherence of the obtained supercontinuum coverage is also tested and it has been achieved nearly coherent spectral outcome from the proposed suspended waveguide design.

Ultraviolet to mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in single-crystalline aluminum nitride waveguides.

We demonstrate ultrabroadband supercontinuum generation from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths in single-crystalline aluminum nitride waveguides. Tunable dispersive waves are observed at the mid-infrared regime by precisely controlling the waveguide widths. In addition, ultraviolet light is generated through cascaded second-harmonic generation in the modal phase-matched waveguides. Numerical simulation indicates a high degree of coherence of the generated spectrum at around the telecom pump and two dispersive waves. Our results establish a reliable path for multiple octave supercontinuum comb generation in single-crystalline aluminum nitride to enable applications including precision frequency metrology and spectroscopy.

Study of low-peak-power highly coherent broadband supercontinuum generation through a dispersion-engineered Si-rich silicon nitride waveguide.

Since the first observation by Alfano and Shapiro in the 1970s [Phys. Rev. Lett.24, 584 (1970)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.24.584], supercontinuum generation study has become an attractive research area in the field of broadband light source design, including its use in various applications associated with nonlinear optics in recent years. In this work, the numerical demonstration of ultrabroadband supercontinuum generation in the mid-infrared (MIR) region via the use of complementary metal-oxide semiconductor compatible Si-rich silicon nitride as the core in a planar waveguide design employing one of two materials, either LiNbO3 or MgF2 glass, as the top and bottom claddings is explored. A rigorous numerical investigation of broadband source design in the MIR using 2 mm long Si-rich silicon nitride waveguides is carried out in terms of waveguide structural parameter variations, input peak power variation, varying unexpected deformation of the waveguide along the core region during fabrication, and spectral coherence analysis. Among the several waveguide models studied, two promising designs are identified for wideband supercontinuum generation up to the MIR using a relatively low input peak power of 50 W. Simulation results reveal that spectral coverage spanning from 0.8 µm to 4.6 µm can be obtained by using a LiNbO3-cladded waveguide, and similar spectral coverage is also predicted for the other design, a MgF2-cladded waveguide. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest spectral span in the MIR region employing a Si-rich silicon nitride waveguide so far. In dispersion tuning as well as in supercontinuum generation, the effect of possible unexpected waveguide deformation along the transverse directions during fabrication is also studied. No significant amount of spectral change is observed in the proposed model for a maximum of 10° inside/outside variation along the width. On the other hand, even 1° upward/downward variation along the thickness could cause substantial spectral change at the waveguide output. Finally, the obtained output spectra from the proposed waveguides are found to be highly coherent and can be applied in various MIR region applications such as optical coherence tomography, spectroscopic measurement, and frequency metrology.

Ultrabroadband and coherent mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in all-normal dispersion Te-based chalcogenide all-solid microstructured fiber

We report an ultrabroadband supercontinuum (SC) generation with high coherence property in all-normal-dispersion (ANDi) Te-based chalcogenide all-solid microstructured optical fiber (AS-MOF). The fiber was fabricated using a rod-in-tube method that presents four A s 2 S 3 glass rods selected as low refractive index material ( n = 2.4 ) embedded in a G e 20 A s 20 S e 20 T e 40 glass matrix ( n = 3.1 ). The highly symmetrical four-hole MOF preform was fabricated through the computerized numerical control precision mechanical drilling method. By engineering the structure of the fiber, we determined an ANDi characteristic in the range of 2–13.5 µm when the core diameter of the fiber was ≤ 10 µ m . Under pumping at 5 µm, a highly coherent SC generation in the range of 2–13.2 µm was generated in a 16-cm-long AS-MOF with core diameter of 9.8 µm.

Ultrabroadband and coherent mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in Te-based chalcogenide tapered fiber with all-normal dispersion.

We demonstrated an ultrabroadband supercontinuum (SC) generation with high coherence property in all-normal-dispersion (ANDi) Te-based chalcogenide tapered fiber. The fibers made of Ge20As20Se15Te45 core and Ge20As20Se20Te40 cladding glasses were fabricated via isolated stacked extrusion. The waist diameter and length can be accurately controlled by a homemade tapering platform. When the core diameter of the waist was ≤14 μm, the fiber showed an ANDi characteristic in the wavelength range of 1.7-14 μm. A coherent SC generation covered 1.7-12.7 μm was generated in a 7-cm-long tapered fiber, pumped at 5.5 μm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first SC experimental demonstration in Te-based step-index tapered fiber and the broadest SC generation in chalcogenide tapered fiber when pumped in the normal dispersion regime so far.

Ultrabroadband supercontinuum generation through filamentation in a lead fluoride crystal

We report the filamentation and supercontinuum generation of a femtosecond pulse in a piece of bulk lead fluoride (PbF2) crystal with a high bandgap and an ultrabroadband frequency window covering 5.6 octaves. A broadband supercontinuum spanning 4.7 octaves from 350 to 9000 nm is demonstrated. The filament traces and bright conical visible emission patterns of the supercontinuums are observed. Additionally, simulations are performed to investigate the supercontinuum generation in the PbF2 crystal by using a waveguide model that considers the supercontinuum generated in the filamentation as a process of pulse propagation in waveguides written by filamentation. The findings of this study demonstrated that a PbF2 crystal is a very suitable nonlinear medium for use in supercontinuum generation by filamentation. This is of significance for the development of ultrabroadband supercontinuum sources based on bulk media and high-peak-power lasers.

Supercontinuum generation with femtosecond optical pulse compression in silicon photonic crystal fibers at 2500 nm

In this paper, femtosecond optical pulses compression and supercontinuum generation in a triangular silicon photonic crystal fiber at 2500 nm are investigated. A region of large minimum anomalous group velocity dispersion, negligible higher order dispersions and unique nonlinearity of silicon are used to demonstrate compression of 100 fs initial input optical pulses to 2.5 fs and ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation with very low input pulse energy over short distances of the fiber.

Design of dispersion-engineered As2Se3 channel waveguide for mid-infrared region supercontinuum generation

In recent years, low cost and scalable integrated optics compatible planar waveguides have emerged for an ultrabroadband supercontinuum generation between ultraviolet and mid-infrared region applications. A 20-mm-long integrated photonics compatible highly nonlinear As2Se3 channel waveguide, which exhibited wider as well as lower magnitude and nearly flat anomalous dispersion region, designed and modeled by employing GeAsSe glass for its upper and lower claddings. Using pump source at 6 μm with a pulse duration of 170-fs, an ultrabroadband long wavelength region supercontinuum broadening covering the wavelength from 3.5 μm to 15 μm could be predicted with the largest input peak power of 10 kW. Increasing the power further to 20 kW does not enhance the supercontinuum expansion noticeably beyond 15 μm. This numerical demonstration could be the longest supercontinuum generation by an on-chip integrated photonics compatible planar waveguide which can be used for a variety of mid-infrared region applications.

Cascaded Raman and Intermodal Four-Wave Mixing in Conventional Non-Zero Dispersion-Shifted Fiber for Versatile Ultra-Broadband Continuum Generation

We demonstrate an efficient ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation in telecom-grade optical fiber by pumping Q-switched subnanosecond laser pulses (0.77 ns) at 1064 nm in the normal dispersion region of the fiber. The fiber supports several spatial modes at this pump wavelength. Multiple sidebands with six Raman stokes spanning over more than 1100 nm (starting well below 600 nm and extending beyond 1700 nm) are generated using very low input pump power (average 57 mW). Theoretical analysis shows that cascaded Raman and cascaded intermodal four-wave mixing processes can account for the generation of multiple sidebands. We also demonstrate that the modal composition of the input pump profile can provide an extra degree of freedom in tailoring the multiple Raman peaks in the output spectrum.

Ultrabroadband Supercontinuum Generation and Frequency-Comb Stabilization Using On-Chip Waveguides with Both Cubic and Quadratic Nonlinearities

Using aluminum-nitride photonic-chip waveguides, we generate optical-frequency-comb supercontinuum spanning from 500 nm to 4000 nm with a 0.8 nJ seed pulse, and show that the spectrum can be tailored by changing the waveguide geometry. Since aluminum nitride exhibits both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, the spectra feature simultaneous contributions from numerous nonlinear mechanisms: supercontinuum generation, difference-frequency generation, second-harmonic generation, and third-harmonic generation. As one application of integrating multiple nonlinear processes, we measure and stabilize the carrier-envelope-offset frequency of a laser comb by direct photodetection of the output light. Additionally, we generate ~0.3 mW in the 3000 nm to 4000 nm region, which is potentially useful for molecular spectroscopy. The combination of broadband light generation from the visible through the mid-infrared, combined with simplified self-referencing, provides a path towards robust comb systems for spectroscopy and metrology in the field.

Generation of ultra-broadband coherent supercontinua in tapered and dispersion-managed silicon nanophotonic waveguides

Tapered and dispersion managed (DM) silicon nanophotonic waveguides are investigated for the generation of optimal ultra broadband supercontinuum (SC). DM waveguides are structures showing a longitudinally dependent group velocity dispersion that results from the variation of the waveguide width with the propagation distance. For the generation of optimal SC, a genetic algorithm has been used to find the best dispersion map. This allows for the generation of highly coherent supercontinuums that span over 1.14 octaves from 1300 nm to 2860 nm and 1.25 octaves from 1200 nm to 2870 nm at -20 dB level for the tapered and DM waveguides respectively, for a 2 $\mu$m, 200 fs and 6.4 pJ input pulse. The comparison of these two structures with the usually considered optimal fixed width waveguide shows that the SC is broader and flatter in the more elaborated DM waveguide, while the high coherence is ensured by the varying dispersion.

Broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum generation using a novel selectively air-hole filled As2S5-As2S3 hybrid PCF

In this paper, we report analysis, design and numerical modeling of ultra-broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum generation across 2.5–15μm ‘fingerprint region’ using a 1.8cm newly designed selectively air-hole filled As2S5-As2S3 hybrid photonic crystal fiber (PCF) pumped with 50fs laser pulses with peak power of 8kW at 4.5μm. The PCF is engineered to achieve a flattened dispersion of 0±1.5ps/nm/km over a wide wavelength range of 2000nm (4000–6000nm). Such flat dispersion of the proposed PCF promises SC generation with over 6.5μm spectral bandwidth and 10μm long wavelength edge by directly pumping the PCF with ultra-short pulses at different wavelengths from 4 to 6μm. Proposed PCF design has no nano-scale air-holes geometrical variation which remains challenging in fabrication. Proposed PCF has potential applications in food quality control, gas sensing and early cancer diagnostics.

Ultra broadband mid-IR supercontinuum generation in Ge11.5As24Se64.5 based chalcogenide graded-index photonic crystal fiber: design and analysis.

In this paper, we report design and numerical analysis of a Ge11.5As24Se64.5 based chalcogenide glass graded-index photonic crystal fiber structure for mid-IR ultra broadband supercontinuum generation. The proposed dispersion engineered photonic crystal fiber offers a zero dispersion wavelength at a pump wavelength of 2.8 μm. To simulate the supercontinuum generation spectrum, the orders of dispersion coefficient up to the ninth order are considered. Simulated results indicate that an ultra broadband supercontinuum spectrum spanning 1-16 μm has been achieved using a 10 mm long photonic crystal fiber structure pumped with 50 fs secant hyperbolic pulses of 3 kW at a -30 dB spectral intensity level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such broad supercontinuum spectrum has been reported. This ultra broadband mid-IR supercontinuum spectrum is applicable in many diverse fields, including medical, defense, metrology, and spectroscopy.

Low-loss, robust fusion splicing of silica to chalcogenide fiber for integrated mid-infrared laser technology development.

We demonstrate a low-loss, repeatable, and robust splice between single-mode silica fiber and single-mode chalcogenide (CHG) fiber. These splices are particularly difficult to create because of the significant difference in the two fibers' glass transition temperatures (∼1000°C) as well as the large difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the fibers (∼20×10(-6)/°C). With 90% light coupled through the silica-CHG fiber splice, predominantly in the fundamental circular-symmetric mode, into the core of the CHG fiber and with 0.5 dB of splice loss measured around the wavelength of 2.5 μm, after correcting only for the Fresnel loss, the silica-CHG splice offers excellent beam quality and coupling efficiency. The tensile strength of the splice is greater than 12 kpsi, and the laser damage threshold is greater than 2 W (CW) and was limited by the available laser pump power. We also utilized this splicing technique to demonstrate 2 to 4.5 μm ultrabroadband supercontinuum generation in a monolithic all-fiber system comprising a CHG fiber and a high peak power 2 μm pulsed Raman-shifted thulium fiber laser. This is a major development toward compact form factor commercial applications of soft-glass mid-IR fibers.
