A Novel Densely Packed 4 × 4 MIMO Antenna Design for UWB Wireless Applications.

In this article, a compact 4-port UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) antenna is proposed. A low profile FR-4 substrate is used as a dielectric material with the dimensions of 58 × 58 mm2 (0.52λ × 0.52λ) at 2.8 GHz and a standard thickness of 1.6 mm. The proposed design characterizes an impedance bandwidth starting from 2.8 to 12.1 GHz (124.1%). Each of the four elements of the proposed MIMO antenna configuration consists of a monopole antenna with PG (partial ground) that has a slot at its center. The corner of each patch (radiator) and ground slot are rounded for impedance matching. Each unit cell is in an orthogonal orientation, forming a quad-port MIMO antenna system. For reference, the partial ground of each unit cell is connected meticulously with the others. The simulated results of the proposed quad-port MIMO antenna design were configured and validated by fabrication and testing. The proposed Quad-port MIMO design has a 6.57 dBi peak gain and 97% radiation efficiency. The proposed design has good isolation below 15 dB in the lower frequency range and below 20 dB in the higher frequency range. The design has a measured ECC (Envelop Correlation Co-efficient) of 0.03 and DG (Diversity Gain) of 10 dB. The value of TARC (Total Active Reflection Coefficient) over the entire operating band is less than 10 dB. Moreover, the design maintained CCL (Channel Capacity Loss) < 0.4 bits/sec/Hz and MEG (Mean Effective Gain) < 3 dB. Based on the obtained results, the proposed design is suitable for the intended high data rate UWB wireless communication portable devices.

Design of low profile high gain antenna using loop-based wideband artificial magnetic conductor for UWB applications

AbstractIn this work, a low profile ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is designed and investigated using a novel loop-based wideband artificial magnetic conductor (WB-AMC) for gain enhancement. Initially, a compact loop antenna is designed using stub loading and further optimized for the UWB range by applying curve ground methodology. The average gain of the proposed antenna without WB-AMC is 2.7 dBi. To enhance the gain of the entire UWB range, loop-based WB-AMC in [2 × 2] forms is integrated. WB-AMC is used as a ground plane beneath the antenna. To validate the performance, the UWB antenna and WB-AMC are fabricated and tested. The measured results confirm the entire UWB range. Proposed antenna provides a peak gain of 9.4 dBi and an average gain of 5.8 dBi. Vertical profile reduction of 50% is achieved compared to perfect electric conductor ground. The proposed UWB antenna is a potential candidate for UWB wireless applications due to its attractive features such as low profile, wide bandwidth coverage, omnidirectional pattern, constant high gain, and group delay.

Efficient Microstrip Antenna system using Reduced GP Structure for Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) Applications

Microstrip antenna is an essential choice for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) applications of its light weight, low profile and easy to form antenna arrays. However, the design of microstrip patch antenna bandwidth is greatly affects by the dielectric substrate material (FR4). In this research, the bandwidth enhancement of MPA was designed by minimizing the dimension of Defected GP (DGP) in GP for Ultra Wide Band wireless applications. But, the antenna design complexity increases with the number of an operating frequency band. In this research, the MPA was designed as small as size of 10×13×1.6 mm and operates on frequency band between 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz for VSWR less than 2. The microstrip patch antenna was designed at 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz using High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software. The simulation result shows that the proposed microstrip patch antenna obtained &lt;-10dB of return loss from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz throughout the frequency range. The measured result proves that the proposed microstrip patch antenna has better characteristics to fulfill the requirements of UWB applications

Design of a compact UWB MIMO‐diversity antenna incorporating fractal inspired isolation structure with band notch characteristics

AbstractIn this communication, a new compact ultra‐wideband (UWB) multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) antenna with band notch characteristics is presented for wireless application. It comprises of two unique monopole antenna elements sharing a similar ground plane. To reduce the coupling between antenna elements, a modified T‐shaped stub equipped with Minkowski fractal shape elements are introduced on the ground plane which in turn establish a good isolation between radiating elements. A band notch is achieved at 5.45 GHz by adding two additional rectangular stubs at 45° where symmetric slots have been etched. The efficiency and gain of the antenna drops significantly at the centre of the notch band which indicates good interference suppression. Results show that the designed antenna delivers widest impedance bandwidth (−10 dB) throughout the operating band of 3.1–20 GHz (of 146% impedance bandwidth) which covers UWB as well as Ku‐band. The antenna also produces ‐18 dB isolation for most of the operating band and ‐16 dB up to 6 GHz. The optimized antenna is fabricated and tested showing |S11| characteristics below −10 dB from 3.1 to 20 GHz band. The dimension of the proposed antenna is 18 × 26 × 1.6 mm3. Results show that the simulated characteristics are in good agreement with the measured counterpart. The designed MIMO antenna is an appropriate candidate for UWB and other wireless applications.

A compact multiple-input multiple-output antenna with high isolation for wireless applications

This paper presents a high-performance multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with a compact size of 42 × 42 mm2. The proposed antenna operates in the frequency range of 3.2–12 GHz for ultra wide band (UWB) wireless communication systems. The proposed MIMO antenna has four identical elements arranged to be orthogonal to each other to achieve a good performance. To achieve high isolation, stubs between the four radiating elements were used. Measured and simulated results were analyzed to obtain the antenna performance in the form of studying radiation pattern, Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC), diversity gain, and channel capacity loss. Additionally, simulated peak gain and total efficiency are acquired. Results indicate that the proposed antenna has UWB bandwidth, high isolation higher than 17 dB, and low correlation coefficient; therefore, this antenna is suitable for UWB wireless applications.

Radiation performance enhancement of an ultra wide band antenna using metamaterial band-pass filter

In this paper, a metamaterial structure based on Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) cell is proposed to achieve an isotropic band-pass filtering response. This filter consists of a planar layer formed by a 3×3 metamaterials cell array with transmittive filtering behavior at 3.5 GHz. This design with 45 mm × 45 mm dimension is then integrated in close proximity at distance of 10 mm with an Ultra Wide Band (UWB) antenna to enhance it’ s performances around a 3.5 GHz operating frequency. Simulation results ensure that filter geometry provides the advantage of polarization independency and also exhibits the angular stability up to 45◦ for both Transverse Electric (TE) and Transverse magnetic (TM) modes. More importantly, enhancement in antenna radiation pattern characteristics is illustrated when the planar FSS layer is integrated at a small distance from the radiator. Moreover, antenna gain was improved to 3.22 dBi, adaptation of antenna port (S11) was increased to -53.26 dB and antenna bandwidth reduction to 1.7 GHz is also detected. All these performances make the proposed design as a good choice used to shield signals in UWB wireless applications especially for connected object in 5G.

Gm-boosted current-reuse inductive-peaking common source LNA for 3.1–10.6 GHz UWB wireless applications in 32 nm CMOS

A low power, low noise amplifier (LNA) for 3.1–10.6 GHz ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless applications is reported in this paper. The proposed LNA is designed using common source (CS) current-reused architecture. Flat and high power gain (S21) with constant noise figure (NF) is achieved using series inductive peaking between CS primary stage and the current reused second stage. Input–output matching networks have been used to achieve acceptable values of input reflection coefficient (S11) and output reflection coefficient (S22) for the complete UWB frequency range. The use of inductive peaking with current reused architecture enhances the overall performance of proposed ultra-wideband LNA. The LNA is analyzed and designed using 32 nm CMOS process. It has a constant NF of 2.7 dB, a high and flat S21 of 23.8 ± 0.7 dB with high reverse isolation (S12) of < − 37.3 dB. The proposed LNA provides acceptable results for S11 and S22 parameters with values less than − 7.5 and − 11.0 dB respectively, for the UWB frequency range of 3.1–10.6 GHz. The proposed LNA provides 1-dB compression point (P1dB) of − 20 dBm and third order intercept point (IIP3) of − 10 dBm. The power consumed by the reported LNA is only 8.05 mW for a 0.7 V power supply.

Design and Packaging of an Eye-Shaped Multiple-Input–Multiple-Output Antenna With High Isolation for Wireless UWB Applications

This paper presents a bandwidth enhanced, compact, multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with high isolation for modern wireless ultrawideband (UWB) applications. The proposed antenna consists of two simple eye-shaped slot radiators, and in order to enhance isolation, the proposed antenna uses a rectangular-shaped ground plane with an extruded T-shaped stub. The antenna characteristics such as the S-parameters, realized gain, surface current distributions, and radiation patterns are investigated. Furthermore, the diversity performance of MIMO antenna in terms of envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), diversity gain (DG), total active reflection coefficient (TARC), and multiplexing efficiency is also studied. The designed antenna shows the impedance bandwidth of 17.2 GHz (from 2.8 to 20 GHz) with a compact size of $18\times 36$ mm2. The antenna possesses a low mutual coupling of less than −20 dB over the operating band, the ECC and the DG are less than 0.02 and greater than 9.95 dB, respectively. The prototype is fabricated and tested for impedance and radiation characteristics. The proposed antenna when installed on a printed circuit board with a standard size, with USB connector, and device housing and various other types of housing show good performance. The proposed MIMO/diversity antenna can be a good candidate for portable UWB applications.

STACKED CONICAL-CYLINDRICAL HYBRID DIELECTRIC RESONATOR ANTENNA FOR IMPROVED ULTRAWIDE BANDWIDTH

Conical and cylindrical dielectric resonator elements are vertically stacked and excited by a simple coaxial monopole. Compared to all earlier configurations, the proposed geometry significantly improves the impedance bandwidth. The ultrawideband response is enhanced due to the multiple resonances occurring by the suggested hybrid antenna. The footprint area of the antenna is only 63.6 mm2 or 25.44 x10-3λo 2 at the lowest operating frequency. The performance of the antenna is verified experimentally and numerically. Presented results show that the proposed hybrid monopole-DRA has a measured impedance bandwidth up to 148.6% (S11 < -10 dB) along with consistent monopole-like radiation patterns and peak gain of 7.14 dBi. With such properties, the proposed hybrid monopole-DRA can be used in different ultra-wideband wireless applications and as wideband electromagnetic interference (EMI) sensors.

Compact Dual Band-Notched Monopole Antenna with Modified Radiating Patch for UWB Wireless Applications

Ultra-wideband (UWB) planar antennas with single or multiple notched frequency bands properties have recently been considered for various communications between wireless devices. In this study, a low profile microstrip monopole antenna with double band-filtering function is designed and investigated. FR-4 dielectric with properties of e = 4.4 and δ = 0.02 has been employed as the antenna substrate. The configuration of the proposed design is composed of a modified fork-shaped radiating patch with inverted Ω-shaped slot and a pair of coupled Γ-shaped parasitic structures, a feed-line and a ground plane. The proposed dual band-notched UWB antenna provides good impedance bandwidth characteristic from 2.89 to 12.43 GHz for VSWR <2 with two notched bands which cover all the 5.2/5.8 GHz of WLAN, 3.5/5.5 GHz of WiMAX and 4-GHz of C bands ranges. The antenna provides good radiation behavior with sufficient gain levels over its operation frequency band.

Design and development of a stacked complementary microstrip antenna with a “π”-shaped DGS for UWB, UNII, WLAN, WiMAX, and Radio Astronomy wireless applications

The proposed research paper presents the design, development, and experimental testing of a broadband stacked complementary microstrip antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) (5.28–5.85 GHz), Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure band (UNII) (5.25–5.825 GHz), wireless local area networks (WLAN, IEEE802.11a, 5.15–5.35 GHz), and IEEE 802.11b (5.75–5.85 GHz), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access band (5.25–5.85 GHz), and Radio Astronomy band (6.6–6.75 GHz) wireless applications. The main aim of this paper is to obtain an UWB behavior from the combined effect of two resonances exhibited by the driven and parasitic patches of a stacked complementary antenna geometry. Circularly polarized radiations are also emitted by the antenna by the addition of an orthogonal stub to its feed line. The proposed three-layered antenna structure (without air gap) is fabricated on commercially available glass-reinforced epoxy laminate, FR4 substrate. The topmost layer of FR4 has a square-shaped patch parasitic patch printed over it; this patch has a square slot etched out from it. The middle layer of the antenna has a square-shaped driven patch of approximately the same dimensions as that of the slot in parasitic patch. The antenna is fed using aperture-coupled feeding mechanism. Therefore the lowermost layer of FR4 has a ground plane on its top with a “π”-shaped slot etched from it and a feed line with an orthogonal stub at its bottom forming a “T”-shaped geometry. The antenna is fed by the electromagnetic coupling between the antenna layers .The proposed antenna has a compact structure with overall volumetric dimensions of 4.7 × 3.82 × 0.483 cm3. The antenna design and simulations are carried out using CSTMWSV'10 with perfect boundary (electric and magnetic) estimations. This designed antenna shows an UWB behavior from 5.14 to 5.85 GHz with an impedance bandwidth of 710 MHZ and a fractional bandwidth of 12.62% at the center frequency of band at 5.5 GHz. The radiating antenna also possesses a good gain of 4.59 dBi at the central frequency of 5.50 GHz and a 1 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 820 MHz from 5.16 to 5.98 GHz. The validation of results is done by fabrication and experimental testing of the antenna using a vector network analyzer and placing the antenna in an anechoic chamber for gain measurements. The measured results show close matching with the simulated ones and this makes the antenna well suited for the proposed wireless applications of interest, specifically in small handheld wireless communication devices.

A triangular coupled-resonator antenna for ultra-wideband applications

A triangle-shaped coupled-resonator microstrip patch antenna is presented for ultra-wideband wireless applications. The antenna achieves bandwidth of 116.5% with electrical dimension of 0.154 λ × 0.133 λ × 0.016 λ at the lower frequency band. The operating bandwidth of proposed antenna is 3.07–11.6 GHz with more than 80% efficiency and about 5.5 dBi gain. A triangular couple resonator is added on the patch to enhance the antenna performance, and antenna ground is modified to get higher bandwidth. The antenna performances have been analyzed using the finite integration technique of computer simulation technology microwave studio and validated with another EM simulating software HFSS and in measurement.

DESIGN OF A MICROSTRIP-FED HEXAGONAL SHAPE UWB ANTENNA WITH TRIPLE NOTCHED BANDS

In this paper, a microstrip-fed hexagonal shape ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna with triple notched bands is presented. The antenna consists of a microstrip feed line, a regular hexagonal shape radiation patch with a complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) and a pair of inverted T-shaped conductor-backed planes embedded in the antenna backside. Notched bands can be easily controlled by geometry parameters of the CSRR and conductor-backed planes. The simulated and measured results show that this monopole UWB antenna can offer an operation frequency from 2.93 GHz to 10.04 GHz with −10 dB return loss bandwidth, except three notched bands at 3.31-3.78 GHz, 5.33- 5.77 GHz and 7.24-7.72 GHz for rejecting the WiMAX and downlink of X-band satellite communication system signals. A good agreement between the measured and simulated results is observed. The proposed antenna provides broadband impedance matching, appropriate gain and stable radiation patterns over its operating bandwidth and can be used in wireless UWB applications.

Compact triple band‐notched printed antenna with multislots for UWB applications

ABSTRACTA novel compact planar printed antenna is designed and analyzed for ultrawideband wireless applications. The proposed antenna is constructed by a circular patch with a circular split‐ring slot gradually varying the width, a U‐shaped slot, a small strip slot, and a segmental ground plane with three slits. To broaden the bandwidth and produce notches, three different type slots are incorporated in the antenna radiating patch, and multiple slits are embedded onto the defected ground plane. The simulated and measured results show that the antenna yields a wider bandwidth ranging from 2.9 to 13.0 GHz (the return loss less than −10 dB) with the three notched bands of 3.30–3.70 GHz (WiMAX band), 4.50–4.83 GHz (Receiving frequency for INSAT/Super‐Extended C‐band), and 6.67–7.15 GHz (Transmitting frequency for INSAT/Super‐Extended C‐band). Furthermore, the proposed antenna has achieved average peak gain of 5.50 dBi and stable quasi‐omnidirectional radiation patterns. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A GAUSSIAN MONOCYCLE PULSE GENERATOR/MODULATOR FOR UWB RADIOS APPLICATIONS

In this paper, we present, at transistor level, a very low complexity Gaussian monocycle pulse generator/modulator for DPSK low voltage and low power tunable ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The pulse generator, simulated in a SMIC 0.13 μm CMOS technology, provides a tunable, both in pulse width duration and repetition time, Gaussian monocycle compliant with the sub-GHz ETSI band and suitable to be used in UWB radio applications. The preliminary IC simulation results show a pulse duration from 1 ns up to 20 ns with good pulse symmetry and with the DPSK modulation capability. The circuit power consumption is about 1 mW from a 1.8 V power supply.

A Low-Profile Ultra-Wideband Modified Planar Inverted-F Antenna

A miniaturized modified planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is presented and experimentally studied. This antenna consists of a planar rectangular monopole top-loaded with a rectangular patch attached to two rectangular plates, one shorted to the ground and the other suspended, both placed at the optimum distance on each side of the planar monopole. The fabricated antenna prototype had a measured impedance bandwidth of 125%, covering 3 to 13 GHz for reflection coefficient better than -10 dB. The radiator size was 20×10×7.5 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> , making it electrically small over most of the band and suitable for incorporation in mobile devices. The radiation patterns and gains of this antenna have been cross-validated numerically and experimentally and confirm that this antenna has adequate characteristics for short range ultra-wideband wireless applications.

Analysis and Mitigation of the Narrowband Interference Impact on IR‐UWB Communication Systems

The impact of narrowband interference signals on impulse radio ultrawideband (UWB) communication systems has been investigated. A closed form expression for the bit error rate performance of UWB communication system in a Log‐normal flat fading channel under such impact is evaluated. The actual UWB channel model is known as a multipath fading channel; however flat fading channel model can be considered with some of the UWB wireless applications such as UWB wireless sensor networks which are characterized by size and energy constraints. Thus, a simple and low‐cost one‐finger Rake receiver can be used with such wireless systems. It was proven that UWB systems unavoidably suffer from the interference caused by the coexisting systems due to the restraint on their transmission power levels. To this end, we propose an interference canceller scheme which is capable of suppressing the impact of such interference and enhancing the performance of UWB communication systems. The interference canceller scheme performance is also investigated in various scenarios of operation such as the presence of multiple narrowband interference signals, symbol timing error, and a comparison with a notch filter‐based case.

Compact CPW-fed antenna with two asymmetric U-shaped strips for UWB communications

A novel coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed printed antenna with two asymmetric U-shaped strips is designed and analysed for ultra-wideband wireless applications. The asymmetric radiating structure with two U-shaped strips and a staircase-shaped strip is adopted in the proposed antenna which broadens the bandwidth to a great extent. The dimensions of the antenna are only 23×25.5×1.6 mm. The antenna yields a wide bandwidth ranging from 3.0 to 12.9 GHz with return loss less than −10 dB with near-linear phase characteristics and stable antenna gain. Furthermore, the proposed antenna can achieve quasi-omnidirectional radiation patterns. The measured results agree well with the simulated prediction.
