Plasmonic Gold Nanostar-Based Probes with Distance-Dependent Plasmon-Enhanced Fluorescence for Ultrasensitive DNA Methyltransferase Assay.

The ultrasensitive DNA methyltransferase (Dam MTase) assay is of high significance for biomedical research and clinical diagnosis because of its profound effect on gene regulation. However, detection sensitivity is still limited by shortcomings, including photobleaching and weak signal intensities of conventional fluorophores at low concentrations. Plasmonic nanostructures with ultrastrong electromagnetic fields and fluorescence enhancement capability that can overcome these intrinsic defects hold great potential for ultrasensitive bioanalysis. Herein, a silica-coated gold nanostars (Au NSTs@SiO2)-based plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF) probe with 20 "hot spots" was developed for ultrasensitive detection of Dam MTase. Here, the Dam Mtase assay was achieved by detecting the byproduct PPi of the rolling circle amplification reaction. It is worth noting that, benefiting from the excellent fluorescence enhancement capability of Au NSTs originating from their 20 "hot spots", the detection limit of Dam Mtase was reduced by nearly 105 times. Moreover, the proposed Au NST-based PEF probe enabled versatile evaluation of Dam MTase inhibitors as well as endogenous Dam MTase detection in GW5100 and JM110 Escherichia coli cell lysates, demonstrating its potential in biomedical analysis.

Exploring electromagnetic field effects and constraining transport parameters of QGP using STAR BES-II data

Heavy-ion collisions undergo various stages in their evolution and it is crucial to disentangle the initial- and final-stage effects. In this work, we report measurements of two types of observables: (i) charge-dependent directed flow (Δv1), which is sensitive to the initial ultra-strong electromagnetic fields, and (ii) flow correlations, such as rn(η) which is sensitive to the initial longitudinal de-correlation, and correlations among flow harmonics. These measurements contribute to constraining the initial state of the collisions, and through a comprehensive beam energy scan, we gain significant insights into the system evolution in the presence of initial spatial asymmetry and electromagnetic fields.

Particle motion in ultra-strong electromagnetic fields of neutron stars: The influence of radiation reaction

Context. Neutron stars are known to be efficient accelerators that produce particles with ultra-relativistic energies. As a by-product, they also emit copious amounts of photons from radio wavelengths up to gamma rays. Aims. As a follow-up to our previous work on particle acceleration simulation near neutron stars, in this paper, we discuss the impact of radiation reaction on test particles injected into their magnetosphere. We therefore neglect the interaction between particles through the electromagnetic field as well as gravitation. Methods. We integrate numerically the reduced Landau-Lifshitz equation for electrons and protons in the vacuum field of a rotating magnetic dipole based on analytical solutions in a constant electromagnetic field. These expressions are simple in a frame where the electric and magnetic field are parallel. Lorentz transforms are used to switch back and forth between this frame and the observer frame. Results. We found that, though due solely to the Lorentz force, electrons reach Lorentz factors up to γ = 1014 and protons reach them up to γ = 1010.7. When radiation reaction is enabled, electrons reach energies up to γ = 1010.5 and protons reach energies up to γ = 108.3. The second set of values are more realistic since the radiation reaction feedback is predominant within the magnetosphere. Moreover, as expected, symmetrical behaviours between the north and south hemispheres are highlighted, either with respect to the location around the neutron star or with respect to particles of opposite charge to mass ratio (q/m). Consequently, it is useless to simulate the full set of geometrical parameters in an effort to obtain an overview of all possibilities. Conclusions. The study of the influence of the magnetic dipolar moment inclination shows similar behaviours regardless of whether radiation reaction is enabled. Protons (respectively electrons) impact the surface of the neutron star less as the inclination angle increases (decreases for electrons), while if the rotation and magnetic axes are aligned, all the protons impact the neutron star, and all the electrons impact the surface if the rotation and magnetic axes are anti-aligned. Similarly, we still find that particles are ejected away from the neutron star, in some preferred directions and Lorentz factors.

Particle acceleration and radiation reaction in a strongly magnetised rotating dipole

Context. Neutron stars are surrounded by ultra-relativistic particles efficiently accelerated by ultra-strong electromagnetic fields. These particles copiously emit high-energy photons through curvature, synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation. To date, however, no numerical simulations have been able to handle such extreme regimes of very high Lorentz factors and magnetic field strengths close to or even above the quantum critical limit of 4.4 × 109 T. Aims. It is the purpose of this paper to study particle acceleration and radiation reaction damping in a rotating magnetic dipole with realistic field strengths of 105 T–1010 T typical of millisecond and young pulsars and of magnetars. Methods. To this end, we implemented an exact analytical particle pusher including radiation reaction in the reduced Landau–Lifshitz approximation where the electromagnetic field is assumed constant in time and uniform in space during one time step integration. The position update is performed using a velocity Verlet method. We extensively tested our algorithm against time independent background electromagnetic fields like the electric drift in cross electric and magnetic fields and the magnetic drift and mirror motion in a dipole. Finally, we apply it to realistic neutron star environments. Results. We investigated particle acceleration and the impact of radiation reaction for electrons, protons, and iron nuclei inserted around millisecond pulsars, young pulsars, and magnetars, in comparison to situations without radiation reaction. We found that the maximum Lorentz factor depends on the particle species, but only weakly on the neutron star type. Electrons reach energies up to γe ≈ 108 − 109, whereas protons reach energies up to γp ≈ 105 − 106 and iron up to γ ≈ 104 − 105. While protons and iron are not affected by radiation reaction, electrons are drastically decelerated, reducing their maximum Lorentz factor by four orders of magnitude. We also found that the radiation reaction limit trajectories agree quite well with the reduced Landau–Lifshitz approximation in almost all cases.

Gold Nanostars: Synthesis, Optical and SERS Analytical Properties

AbstractGold nanostars are among the most efficient plasmonic nanomaterials for optical sensing with surface enhanced Raman scattering. In recent years, gold nanostars have increased relevance in physics, analytical chemistry, environmental science, biology and medicine, and in particular in sensing and therapy. These colloids can sustain ultrastrong electromagnetic fields which allow their use as single particles optical enhancers; are colloidally stable and may have a marked catalytical activity. Due to their exotic shape, these colloids present characteristic optical and reactive behaviors. Here, we briefly discuss the optical properties, the synthetic routes and the analytical applications of these nanoparticles.

Mapping the electromagnetic fields of heavy-ion collisions with the Breit-Wheeler process

Ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are expected to produce the strongest electromagnetic fields in the known Universe. These highly-Lorentz contracted fields can manifest themselves as linearly polarized quasi-real photons that can interact via the Breit-Wheeler process to produce lepton anti-lepton pairs. The energy and momentum distribution of the produced dileptons carry information about the strength and spatial distribution of the colliding fields. Recently it has been demonstrated that photons from these fields can interact even in heavy-ion collisions with hadronic overlap, providing a purely electromagnetic probe of the produced medium. In this review we discuss the recent theoretical progress and experimental advances for mapping the ultra-strong electromagnetic fields produced in heavy-ion collisions via measurement of the Breit-Wheeler process.

A relativistic particle pusher for ultra-strong electromagnetic fields

Kinetic plasma simulations are nowadays commonly used to study a wealth of nonlinear behaviours and properties in laboratory and space plasmas. In particular, in high-energy physics and astrophysics, the plasma usually evolves in ultra-strong electromagnetic fields produced by intense laser beams for the former or by rotating compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes for the latter. In these ultra-strong electromagnetic fields, the gyro-period is several orders of magnitude smaller than the time scale on which we desire to investigate the plasma evolution. Some approximations are required such as, for instance, artificially decreasing the electromagnetic field strength, which is certainly not satisfactory. The main flaw of this downscaling is that it cannot reproduce particle acceleration to ultra-relativistic speeds with a Lorentz factor above$\gamma \approx 10^3$–$10^4$. In this paper, we design a new algorithm able to catch particle motion and acceleration to a Lorentz factor of up to$10^{15}$or even higher by using Lorentz boosts to special frames where the electric and magnetic field are parallel. Assuming that these fields are locally uniform in space and constant in time, we solve analytically the equation of motion in a tiny region smaller than the length scale of the spatial and temporal gradient of the field. This analytical integration of the orbit severely reduces the constraint on the time step, allowing us to use large time steps, avoiding resolving the ultra-high gyro-frequency. We performed simulations in ultra-strong spatially and time-dependent electromagnetic fields, showing that our particle pusher is able to follow accurately the exact analytical solution for very long times. This property is crucial to properly capture for instance lepton electrodynamics in electromagnetic waves produced by fast rotating neutron stars. We conclude with a simple implementation of our new pusher into a one-dimensional relativistic electromagnetic particle-in-cell code, testing it against plasma oscillations, two-stream instabilities and strongly magnetized relativistic shocks.

Particle acceleration in neutron star ultra-strong electromagnetic fields

In this paper, we discuss the results of a new particle pusher in realistic ultra-strong electromagnetic fields such as those encountered around rotating neutron stars. After presenting the results of this algorithm in simple fields and comparing them to expected exact analytical solutions, we present new simulations for a rotating magnetic dipole in vacuum for a millisecond pulsar by using the Deutsch solution. Particles are injected within the magnetosphere, neglecting radiation reaction, interaction among them and their feedback on the fields. Our simulations are therefore not yet fully self-consistent because the Maxwell equations are not solved according to the current produced by these particles. The code highlights the symmetrical behaviour of particles of opposite charge to mass ratio,$q/m$, with respect to the north and south hemispheres. The relativistic Lorentz factor$\gamma$of the accelerated particles is proportional to this ratio$q/m$: protons reach up to$\gamma _p \simeq 10^{10.7}$, whereas electrons reach up to$\gamma _e \simeq 10^{14}$. Our simulations show that particles could either be captured by the neutron star, trapped around it or ejected far from it, well outside the light cylinder. Actually, for a given charge to mass ratio, particles follow similar trajectories. These particle orbits show some depleted directions, especially at high magnetic inclination with respect to the rotation axis for positive charges and at low inclination for negative charges because of symmetry. Other directions are preferred and loaded with a high density of particles, some directions concentrating the highest or lowest acceleration efficiencies.

Nonlinear electrodynamics at cylindrical “cumulation” fronts

Converging cylindrical electromagnetic fields in vacuum have been shown (Zababakhin and Nechaev Sov Phys JETP 6:345, 1958) to exhibit amplitude “cumulation”. It was found that the amplitude of self-similar waves increases without bounds at finite distances from the axis on the front of the fields reflected from the cylindrical axis. In the present paper, we propose to exploit this cylindrical cumulation process as a possible new path towards the generation of ultra-strong electromagnetic fields where nonlinear quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects come into play. We show that these effects, as described in the long wave-length limit within the framework of the Euler Heisenberg Lagrangian, induce a radius-dependent reduction of the propagation speed of the cumulation front. Furthermore, we compute the $$e^+{-}e^-$$ pair production rate at the cumulation front and show that the total number of pairs that are generated scales as the sixth power of the field amplitude.

Electrodynamics and Radiation from Rotating Neutron Star Magnetospheres

Neutron stars are compact objects rotating at high speed, up to a substantial fraction of the speed of light (up to 20% for millisecond pulsars) and possessing ultra-strong electromagnetic fields (close to and sometimes above the quantum critical field of 4.4 × 10 9 T ). Moreover, due to copious e ± pair creation within the magnetosphere, the relativistic plasma surrounding the star is forced into corotation up to the light cylinder where the corotation speed reaches the speed of light. The neutron star electromagnetic activity is powered by its rotation which becomes relativistic in the neighborhood of this light cylinder. These objects naturally induce relativistic rotation on macroscopic scales about several thousands of kilometers, a crucial ingredient to trigger the central engine as observed on Earth. In this paper, we elucidate some of the salient features of this corotating plasma subject to efficient particle acceleration and radiation, emphasizing several problems and limitations concerning current theories of neutron star magnetospheres. Relativistic rotation in these systems is indirectly probed by the radiation produced within the magnetosphere. Depending on the underlying assumptions about particle motion and radiation mechanisms, different signatures on their light curves, spectra, pulse profiles and polarization angles are expected in their broadband electromagnetic emission. We show that these measurements put stringent constraints on the way to describe particle electrodynamics in a rotating neutron star magnetosphere.

Plasmonic Nanogaps: From Fabrications to Optical Applications

AbstractMetallic nanostructures with nanogap features are proved to be highly effective building blocks for plasmonic systems, as they can provide ultrastrong electromagnetic (EM) fields and controllable optical properties. A wide range of fields, including surface enhanced spectroscopy, sensing, imaging, nonlinear optics, optical trapping, and metamaterials, are benefited from these enhanced EM fields. This review outlines the latest development of the fabrication methods for nanogap structures (metal nanoparticle assembly, nanosphere lithography, electron beam lithography (EBL), focused ion beam (FIB) lithography, oblique angle shadow evaporation, edge lithography, and so on), followed by a summary of their optical applications. The present review will inspire more ingenious designs and fabrications of plasmonic nanogap structures with lithography‐free fabrication techniques, and promote their applications in optics and electronics.

Tip-Selective Growth of Silver on Gold Nanostars for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Nanogaps as "hot spots" with highly localized surface plasmon can generate ultrastrong electromagnetic fields. Superior to the exterior nanogaps obtained via aggregation and self-assembly, interior nanogaps within Au and Ag nanostructures give stable and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals. However, the synthesis of nanostructures with interior hot spots is still challenging because of the lack of high-yield strategies and clear design principles. Herein, gold-silver nanoclusters (Au-Ag NCs) with multiple interior hot spots were fabricated as SERS platforms via selective growth of Ag nanoparticles on the tips of Au nanostars (Au NSs). Furthermore, the interior gap sizes of Au-Ag NCs can be facilely tuned by changing the amount of AgNO3 used. Upon 785 nm excitation, single Au-Ag NC350 exhibits 43-fold larger SERS enhancement factor and the optimal signal reproducibility relative to single Au NS. The SERS enhancement factors and signal reproducibility of Au-Ag NCs increase with the decrease of gap sizes. Collectively, the Au-Ag NCs could serve as a flexible, reproducible, and active platform for SERS investigation.

Exploring vacuum birefringence based on a 100 PW laser and an x-ray free electron laser beam

Exploring vacuum birefringence with the station of extreme light at Shanghai Coherent Light Facility is considered. Laser pulses of intensity beyond 1023 W cm−2 are capable of polarizing the vacuum due to the ultra-strong electro-magnetic fields. The subtle difference of the vacuum refractive indexes along electric and magnetic fields leads to a birefringence effect for lights propagating through. The vacuum birefringence effect can now be captured by colliding a hard x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) beam with a high-power laser. The initial XFEL beam of pure linear polarization is predicated to gain a very small ellipticity after passing through the laser stimulated vacuum. Various interaction geometries are considered, showing that the estimated ellipticity lies between 1.8 × 10−10 and 10−9 for a 100 PW laser interacting with a 12.9 keV XFEL beam, approaching the threshold for todays’ polarity detection technique. The detailed experimental set-up is designed, including the polarimeter, the focusing compound refractive lens and the optical path. When taking into account the efficiencies of the x-ray instruments, it is found that about 10 polarization-flipped x-ray photons can be detected for a single shot for our design. Considering the background noise level, accumulating runs are necessary to obtain high confident measurement.

SERS study of surface plasmon resonance induced carrier movement in Au@Cu2O core-shell nanoparticles

A plasmon induced carrier movement enhanced mechanism of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was investigated using a charge-transfer (CT) enhancement mechanism. Here, we designed a strategy to study SERS in Au@Cu2O nanoshell nanoparticles with different shell thicknesses. Among the plasmonically coupled nanostructures, Au spheres with Cu2O shells have been of special interest due to their ultrastrong electromagnetic fields and controllable carrier transfer properties, which are useful for SERS. Au@Cu2O nanoshell nanoparticles (NPs) with shell thicknesses of 48–56nm are synthesized that exhibit high SERS activity. This high activity originates from plasmonic-induced carrier transfer from Au@Cu2O to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA). The CT transition from the valence band (VB) of Cu2O to the second excited π-π* transition of MBA, and is of b2 electronic symmetry, which was enhanced significantly. The Herzberg-Teller selection rules were employed to predict the observed enhanced b2 symmetry modes. The system constructed in this study combines the long-range electromagnetic effect of Au NPs, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Au@Cu2O nanoshell, and the CT contribution to assist in understanding the SERS mechanism based on LSPR-induced carrier movement in metal/semiconductor nanocomposites.

Plasmonic Nanogap-Enhanced Raman Scattering with Nanoparticles.

Plasmonic coupling-based electromagnetic field localization and enhancement are becoming increasingly important in chemistry, nanoscience, materials science, physics, and engineering over the past decade, generating a number of new concepts and applications. Among the plasmonically coupled nanostructures, metal nanostructures with nanogaps have been of special interest due to their ultrastrong electromagnetic fields and controllable optical properties that can be useful for a variety of signal enhancements such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The Raman scattering process is highly inefficient, with a very small cross-section, and Raman signals are often poorly reproducible, meaning that very strong, controllable SERS is needed to obtain reliable Raman signals with metallic nanostructures and thus open up new avenues for a variety of Raman-based applications. More specifically, plasmonically coupled metallic nanostructures with ultrasmall (∼1 nm or smaller) nanogaps can generate very strong and tunable electromagnetic fields that can generate strong SERS signals from Raman dyes in the gap, and plasmonic nanogap-enhanced Raman scattering can be defined as Raman signal enhancement from plasmonic nanogap particles with ∼1 nm gaps. However, these promising nanostructures with extraordinarily strong optical signals have shown limited use for practical applications, largely due to the lack of design principles, high-yield synthetic strategies with nanometer-level structural control and reproducibility, and systematic, reliable single-molecule/single-particle-level studies on their optical properties. All these are extremely important challenges because even small changes (<1 nm) in the structure of the coupled plasmonic nanogaps can significantly affect the plasmon mode and signal intensity. In this Account, we examine and summarize recent breakthroughs and advances in plasmonic nanogap-enhanced Raman scattering with metal nanogap particles with respect to the design and synthesis of plasmonic nanogap structures, as well as ultrasensitive and quantitative Raman signal detection using these structures. The applications and prospects of plasmonic nanogap particle-based SERS are also discussed. In particular, reliable synthetic and measurement strategies for plasmonically coupled nanostructures with ∼1 nm gap, in which both the nanogap size and the position of a Raman-active molecule in the gap can be controlled with nanometer/sub-nanometer-level precision, can address important issues regarding the synthesis and optical properties of plasmonic nanostructures, including structural and signal reproducibility. Further, single-molecule/single-particle-level studies on the plasmonic properties of these nanogap structures revealed that these particles can generate ultrastrong, quantifiable Raman signals in a highly reproducible manner.

Multi-pair states in electron–positron pair creation

Ultra strong electromagnetic fields can lead to spontaneous creation of single or multiple electron-positron pairs. A quantum field theoretical treatment of the pair creation process combined with numerical methods provides a description of the fermionic quantum field state, from which all observables of the multiple electron-positron pairs can be inferred. This allows to study the complex multi-particle dynamics of electron-positron pair creation in-depth, including multi-pair statistics as well as momentum distributions and spin. To illustrate the potential benefit of this approach, it is applied to the intermediate regime of pair creation between nonperturbative Schwinger pair creation and perturbative multiphoton pair creation where the creation of multi-pair states becomes nonnegligible but cascades do not yet set in. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how spin and helicity of the created electrons and positrons are affected by the polarization of the counterpropagating laser fields, which induce the creation of electron-positron pairs.

Spin polarized electron-positron pair production via elliptical polarized laser fields

We study nonperturbative multiphoton electron-positron pair creation in ultrastrong electromagnetic fields formed by two counterpropagating pulses with elliptic polarization. Our numerical approach allows us to take into account the temporal as well as the spatial variation of the standing electromagnetic field. The spin and momentum resolved pair creation probabilities feature characteristic Rabi oscillations and resonance spectra. Therefore, each laser frequency features a specific momentum distribution of the created particles. We find that, depending on the relative polarization of both pulses, the created electrons may be spin polarized along the direction of field propagation.

Exploring high-intensity QED at ELI

We give a non-technical overview of QED effects arising in the presence of ultra-strong electromagnetic fields highlighting the new prospects provided by a realisation of the ELI laser facility.

Ionization of highly excited hydrogen atoms by intense electromagnetic fields

A previous theory of atomic transitions in ultrastrong electromagnetic fields is applied to the problem of the ionization of highly excited hydrogen atoms. The magnitude of the fields necessary for the validity of the theory is greatly reduced by using excited hydrogen in the initial state, and the requirement of only multiphoton ionization limits the application to lowfrequency (microwave) fields. The requirement can probably be satisfied with currently available equipment. A result of the calculation is that the average number of photons absorbed is twice the minimum number.

Atomic ionization by ultra—strong laser fields

The problem of multi-photon ionization of hydrogen by ultra-strong electromagnetic fields is solved in the limit where the field energy is greater than the Coulomb energy. The transition rate goes to zero as the reciprocal of the field strength.
