The Influence of Non-verbal Communication among University Students on Social Relationship

The main aim of the current study is to determine how all types of nonverbal communication including “facial expression, kinesics (gesture), paralinguistic (voice), body language and posture, proxemics (space), eye contact, haptics (touch) and physical appearance” affect university students’ social relationships. The main research questions for the current study are: Do types of nonverbal communication affect university students' social relationships? Should the effects of all types of nonverbal communication be taught at university? In order to obtain data, an open-ended questionnaire is used involving 115 senior students, (60 boys and 55 girls), at Salahaddin, Cihan and Lebanese French Universities/College of Languages/ English Departments. For analysing the obtained data, the researcher used a mixed methods research approach involving both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study concluded that all types of nonverbal communication affect university students’ social relationships, both in university life and in the future. Therefore, the effect of all types of nonverbal communication should be studied and taught at the beginning of university life in order to pave the way for all university students using them correctly and appropriately

An Analysis of Non-Verbal Communication in Students' Speaking Performance

The aims of this study are to investigate the use of non-verbal communication in students’ speaking class and to describe the reasons of the use non-verbal communication in students’ speaking class at English Department, University of Kuningan. The participants of this study were three selected students of English education department who took public speaking subject in fourth semester. The study employed a qualitative research through a plying a case study design. To gain the data needed, two techniques were employed; observation and interview. The writer used observation field note to find out the types of non-verbal communication in students’ speech. Interview was conducted to answer the reasons toward the use of non-verbal communication in students’ speech. The data analysis showed that the most occur used non-verbal communication was gesture. Moreover, students’ prefer to use gesture and their eye contact to help them conveying message and as the complement to make their speech more interesting. It can be stated that non-verbal communication emphasize the students in delivering message to the audience while doing speech, in addition students were more confident when delivering their speech by using non-verbal communication.

The Use of Gesture to Overcome Misunderstanding in Teaching English

Gesture is a type of non-verbal communication that is very influential in teaching and learning activities and interactions between teachers and students. It is not only can convey the speakers’ intention more specifically and adequately, clarify the teaching instruction, encourage the students’ interest, maximize English teaching’s goal but also can help improve the students’ skill in speaking, writing, reading and listening . This study aims to improve students' speaking, writing, reading, listening and interest in English lessons through the use of gestures at SMA Negeri 1 Batang Natal.The method used was descriptive qualitative. The subjects were 2 teachers and 25 students of 11th grade of SMA Negeri 1 Batang Natal The research instruments used were interviews and observations. The results of this study suggests that the use of movement has positive and negative sides for students. The positive side is that the teacher must be able to use the right movements according to the needs of their students. Creating a comfortable atmosphere and considering the most effective method so that students are activated in participating the lessons. While negative side was using too many movements or being too serious when teaching would not create a comfortable classroom atmosphere.

Hand Gesture Identification for Improving Accuracy Using Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)

Hand gestures are a type of non-verbal communication that uses visible body movementsto convey important messages. This paper presents a much better approach of hand gestureprediction. Image Identification is an important step in most of the modern hand gestureprediction system. A convolutional neural network are used for improving the accuracy of thesystem. Proposed system tested for large number of hand gesture images using Tensor flowtool. . The convolutional neural network (ConvNet) is a deep learning algorithm for learningand classifying hand gestures and achieved accuracy 93.61%.

Nonverbal Communication as a Communication Strategy in Hotel Job Interview: A Narrative Inquiry Study

Nonverbal communication is portrayed as a communication strategy to convey interpersonal communication meaning. This study aimed at identifying the types of nonverbal communication applied by the job applicant in a hotel job interview and the users’ perspective toward the nonverbal communication applied as a communication strategy. This study employed a qualitative study with narrative inquiry design by interviewing one experienced human resources officer and 2 human resources managers. The data were gathered through interviews in different sections with different informants. The interview was recorded and transcripted. The interview transcription was analyzed to identify the tendency of the informant’s answers. The result showed that the most nonverbal communication occurring in hotel job interview include body language, voice tone, and grooming. The human resources managers and staffs, as an interviewer, prefer to have good attitude over good knowledge. This implied that hotel job applicants must be aware on their body language, voice tone, and grooming before attending a job interview.

The Impact of COVID 19 on Non-verbal Politeness

In the light of the great changes in the world due to Corona pandemic (henceforth COVID 19), and the weakness of communication imposed by the pandemic, the world has found a way to communicate and overcome the difficulties that people face during communication with the continuation of the pandemic. Even with the pandemic, politeness emerges in its most useful form. It is possible that nonverbal communication can be more effective in the current circumstances. Thus, different types of non-verbal communication are employed to express politeness and courtesy such as: facial expression, eye contact, haptics, proxemics, gestures, etc. These categories of non-verbal communication are of great use for effective social communication. They are expressed and used for different functions such as: to show respect and privacy or to express politeness. Nowadays, these cues are employed in an effective and special way to face the circumstances imposed by Corona pandemic and keep contact with others in a save way with the sense of politeness. This study aims at presenting different categories of non-verbal communication in the light of politeness, It also aims at explaining and analyzing different functions of these cues and showing how these cues are affected by Corona pandemic. It tries to answer the question 'to what extent could Corona pandemic affects the use of certain cues of non-verbal politeness. This study concludes that most of the non-verbal cues are corresponded differently according to the situation to express politeness. Non-verbal politeness is employed extremely to serve the current situation imposed by the pandemic. Non-verbal politeness responds positively to the effects of Corona pandemic.

Face Detection Based Emotion Recognition Using Deep Learning

Music aids in the reduction of stress, the development of self-esteem, and the improvement of health, among other things. It can be broken down into a number of different genres. People tend to choose a particular music genre based on their mood and interests. As a result, there is a clear need for a platform that can automatically recommend music based on an individual's feelings. Facial expressions can be seen of as a type of nonverbal communication that can transmit information about a person's moods. As a result, Egophony is primarily concerned with the development of an application that would recommend songs to the end user based on their emotions and interests by capturing their facial expressions. We've developed a system that can recognize emotions based on facial expressions. Once the mood has been identified, the system will recommend a playlist of music from a specific genre based on the emotion. It will ultimately save a significant amount of time that would otherwise be spent manually searching, selecting, and playing songs.

Object Tracking Glove

Hand gestures are a type of nonverbal communication that can be applied to a variety of sectors, including deaf-mute communication, human–computer interaction (HCI), medical applications, robot control and home automation. Various strategies have been used in hand gesture research articles, including those based on instrumented sensor technology and computer vision. In this paper, we have proposed an object tracking glove that uses simple hand motions and sensor technology to operate computer systems. Withthe assistanceof the webcamthe colourofthe object over the glove is detectedand therefore thecolorare going to bereflected onthe PCscreen, this willbe accomplished withthe utilizationof IDE processingreferred to ascalibration. Withan easymovement of the hand, the pointerare oftenmoved tothe acceptablespot onthe PCduring thisapplication the hall sensor acts as a switch or button, which helps to open any menu or software application when the cursor is moved overthe specifiedmenu. Whenever the hall sensor is messed with the magnet then the data from the sensor passes to the microcontroller. This microcontroller sends data to the Bluetooth module, and the signals are then passed on to the system, allowing it to perform the actions. Our application controls the lights/fans of a room controlled using the glove.

Finding Facial Expression Patterns on Videos based on Smile and Eyes-Open Confidence Values

Facial expression recognition is one of the types of non-verbal communication that is not only commons for human but also plays an essential role in everyday lives. The development of science and technology allows the machine to automatically detect human facial expressions based on images and videos. Numerous facial expression detection methods have been proposed in the literature. This paper presents a method to find three basic facial expressions (neutral, happy, and angry) from two parameter values: smile and eyes-open. The analysis involves a preprocessing step using a combination of pre-designed proprietary algorithm and Luxand library. Firstly, the parameters were mapped into two-dimensional space and then grouped into three clusters using K-means, a popular heuristic clustering method. Secondly, more than 50,000 frames for each video were experimented using the proprietary research data. The result shows that the proposed method successfully performed a simple video analysis of facial expressions.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION IN TEACHING AND LEARNING ENGLISH: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

In the reviewed studies non-verbal communication used by teachers in teaching English. The purpose of this research is to study the type of Non-verbal communication by English teachers in teaching and to finding out how English teachers use non-verbal communication in teaching class, much further, whether to seek out the strength and weaknesses of the non-verbal communication, and to find out the effective way to use non-verbal communication efficiently and effectively. This research used a Quantitative approach which the effortsis to collect all of the studies that shared the common field of the study. The result of this study showed that the benefits,the advantages, the disadvantages and its effects. Moreover the non-verbal communicationgive some contributions in education which can be applied by teacher today. Recommendation and suggestion are offered in the current study. Hence,non-verbal communication is recommended to be used by teacher in this classroom.

Non-Verbal Communication Used by University Students’ Examinee in Thesis Proposal Seminar

This thesis entitled Non-Verbal Communication by University Students; Examinee In Thesis Proposal Seminar. Students have a proposal and final thesis examination where they present and explain the research that they have conducted. The researcher interested to provide views and further investigating the meaning of appearance which is expected to obtain a detailed picture of the meaning of non-verbal sign constructed on the meaning of the appearance by semiotic analysis. For this reason, this study aims at 1) To describe the kinds of non-verbal communications used by the student of English Department in the proposal seminar, and 2) To describe the meanings of the non-verbal communications used by the student of English Department in the proposal seminar. The theory of three basic semiotic elements proposed by Peirce (2003) is used to identify the sign action and also determined better the nature and rhetorical function of both verbal and non-verbal representation. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this research are the non-verbal communication of the students from the English department through their Facial Expression, Eye Contacts , Emblems, Adaptors and Body Action. The source of the data obtained one video from the seminar proposal. A semiotic visual image of signs, in the seminar proposal video. There are 7 kinds of non-verbal communication the student showed that obtained and observed by the researcher. The result of this research shows that five types of the non-verbal communications are found in the seminar, i.e. fear, amusement, agony, surprise and disgust. GAMBARAN PROBLEMATIKA KOMUNIKASI RUMAH TANGGA KRISTEN DI KOTA KUPANG

Marriage will occur if each partner feels they are compatible, complementary, respectful, able to receive. However, marriage is not as smooth as they imagined when they were not married because there will be a variety of new problems that must be faced. The reason for this research is that poor communication can cause many problems in a Christian family. Communication plays a very important role in married life. As for the formulation of the problem that this research wants to answer, How big is the picture of communication problems in Christian households in the city of Kupang? What type of communication is used? How much does the church carry out Christian household accompaniment? This study surveyed 116 respondents who were married in the city of Kupang using Simple Random Sampling techniques. The instrument used was a questionnaire based on the Gultman scale with two answer choices. Based on the results of the study concluded that the description of communication problems in Christian households in the city of Kupang is in the near-low category at 33.10%. The type of non-verbal communication used by research respondents was 68.10%. Based on 52.17% of respondents answered that the church does not carry out the task of assisting Christian household communication problems.

NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION PERFORMED BY FOREIGN ENGLISH TEACHER

This paper specifically aims at knowing the types of nonverbal communications performed by the foreign English teacher based on Schmitz�s (2012) theory and finding out the students� responses toward the foreign English teacher�s nonverbal communication. Qualitative research design was applied in this research. The participants of this research were the foreign English teacher and the students of class VII A MTsN 2 Kuningan. The data were collected through observation, interview, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed both qualitative and quantitative. The results of the research revealed that the foreign English teacher performed 3 types of nonverbal communication: 1) kinesics (includes gesture: emblems and illustrators, head movements and posture, eye contact, and facial expression); 2) vocalics; and 3) proxemics. However, the foreign English teacher did not perform adaptors and haptics in the classroom. He confessed that he did not really do certain gestures while feeling nervous, and for the American teacher, haptics (communication by touch) is a sensitive thing, and a difficult area. Regarding the students� responses, they felt motivated learning English with the foreign English teacher because it made them happy, excited, proud, enthusiastic, and have willingness to learn more. It was showed that 89,6% of the students responded positively toward nonverbal communication performed by the foreign English teacher in teaching learning process, and being responded negatively by 10,4%. Furthermore, it emphasizes that teachers should be aware in applying nonverbal communication to create educative interesting atmosphere for the students and make the teaching learning process effective as well as motivating them.Keywords: nonverbal communication; foreign teacher; student�s response.

Evidence of nonverbal communication between nurses and older adults: a scoping review

BackgroundCommunication is an integral part of life and of nurse-patient relationships. Effective communication with patients can improve the quality of care. However, the specific communication needs of older adults can render communication between them and nurses as less effective with negative outcomes.MethodsThis scoping review aims at describing the type of nonverbal communication used by nurses to communicate with older adults. It also describes the older adults’ perceptions of nurses’ nonverbal communication behaviors. It followed (Int J Soc Res 8: 19-32, 2005) framework. Grey literature and 11 databases were systematically searched for studies published in English and French, using search terms synonymous with nonverbal communication between nurses and older adults for the period 2000 to 2019.ResultsThe search revealed limited published research addressing nonverbal communication between older adults and nurses. The studies eligible for quality assessment were found to be of high quality. Twenty-two studies were included and highlighted haptics, kinesics, proxemics, and vocalics as most frequently used by nurses when communicating with older adults; while studies showed limited use of artefacts and chronemics. There was no mention of nurses’ use of silence as a nonverbal communication strategy. Additionally, there were both older adults’ positive and negative responses to nurses’ nonverbal communication behaviors.ConclusionNurses should be self-aware of their nonverbal communication behaviors with older adults as well as the way in which the meanings of the messages might be misinterpreted. In addition, nurses should identify their own style of nonverbal communication and understand its modification as necessary in accordance with patient’s needs.

STUDENTS’ NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION IN INSTAGRAM POST AT TENTH GRADE OF SMA NEGERI 1 CILEGON (2020)

The objective of this research is to investigate the use of nonverbal communication by students of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Cilegon in Instagram post. The researcher used qualitative method and case study as a research design. The research was conducted on 22nd April 2019. The participants of this research were the English teacher and the students of X IPS 1 at SMA Negeri 1 Cilegon. The students were asked to post their performance in Instagram. The researcher used observation to find out the types of nonverbal communication that mostly used by the students in their Instagram post. Meanwhile, questionnaire and interview were used to describe the English teacher and students’ response on the use of nonverbal communication. The data analysis showed that the most occurred nonverbal communication was gesture. The English teacher and students also gave the positive response toward the use of nonverbal communication in the students’ performance.Keywords: Nonverbal communication, Instagram, Students’ Performance.

Electronic Glove for Troops to Interpret Hand and Arm Gestures in Close Combat Scenario

In a close combat situation several types of non-verbal communication are available. However these signals have limits of range and reliability, particularly when line of sight is disrupted. This paper proposes the system for troops to interpret hand and arm military gestures applicable in close combat scenario. In the proposed system, signals are transmitted through secured Bluetooth connections and interpreted at the receiver end. k-NN algorithm, Lookup Table (LuT) and Decision Tree algorithm are used to determine the exact classification of the gestures. This paper presents a system keeping only one fellow trooper in picture and reported 94.6 percent accuracy of the military gestures interpretation.

Understanding Body Language Does Not Require Matching the Body's Egocentric Map to Body Posture: A Brain Activation fMRI Study.

Body language (BL) is a type of nonverbal communication in which the body communicates the message. We contrasted participants' cognitive processing of body representations or meanings versus body positions. Participants (N = 20) were shown pictures depicting body postures and were instructed to focus on their meaning (BL) or on the position of a body part relative to the position of another part (body structural description [BSD]). We examined activation in brain areas related to the two types of body representation-body schema and BSD-as modulated by the two tasks. We presumed that if understanding BL triggers embodiment of body posture, a matching procedure between the egocentric map coding the position of one's body segments in space and time should occur. We found that BL (vs. BSD) differentially activated the angular gyrus bilaterally, the anterior middle temporal gyrus, the temporal pole, and the right superior temporal gyrus, the inferior frontal gyrus, the superior medial gyrus, and the left superior frontal gyrus. BSD (vs. BL) differentially activated the superior parietal lobule (Area 7A) bilaterally, the posterior inferior temporal gyrus, the middle frontal gyrus, and the left precentral gyrus. Sensorimotor areas were differentially activated by BSD when compared with BL. Inclusive masking showed significant voxels in the superior colliculus and pulvinar, fusiform gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, the intraparietal sulcus bilaterally, inferior frontal gyrus bilaterally, and precentral gyrus. These results indicate common brain networks for processing BL and BSD, for which some areas show differentially stronger or weaker processing of one task or the other, with the precuneus and the superior parietal lobule, the intraparietal sulcus, and sensorimotor areas most related to the BSD as activated by the BSD task. In contrast, the parietal operculum, an area related to the body schema, a representation crucial during embodiment of body postures, was not activated for implicit masking or for the differential contrasts.

Nonverbal Communication in Javanese and Australian Culture

Non-verbal communication (NVC) is very common in social interactions, and the use of NVC is specified by social conventions. There are some universal nonverbal signals used by people across cultures such as laughing and crying, but there also some nonverbal acts which are culturally specific. This paper aims to discuss NVC in Javanese and Australian cultures. The data used in this study were taken from Javanese people living in Central Java and Australian people in Canberra. The respondents were chosen randomly. The results show that Australians and Javanese have similarities and differences in their types of nonverbal communication as handshakes, waving, kissing, hand holding, hugging and hand clapping.
