Clinical Simulation of Complementary Therapy in Nursing Education: An Integrative Review

Aim: This study aimed to explore the clinical simulation models used in each type of complementary therapy, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the resulting implications in nursing education. Design and methods: The study was done by means of an integrative review. Journal searches were performed using the LILACS, PubMed, SciELO, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and EMBASE databases for publications between 2015 and 2021, with full text in English. The Whittemore and Knafl frameworks guided the review, and for quality control, we used the Clinical Appraisal Prospective Study (CAPS) instrument. Results: We identified 15 articles indicating that each type of complementary therapy that is combined into a different clinical simulation model can facilitate the learning process, understanding, and practise of the nursing profession. The simulation (videos, virtual reality and high-quality manikins) makes students more enthusiastic and not bored; moreover, it enables students to easily understand and innovate in studying complementary therapies. The Effect of Indonesian Traditional Music on Stress in Type II Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels. Changes in blood glucose levels in type II diabetes mellitus patients can be influenced by many factors, one of which is changes in stress level. Patients with diabetes mellitus type II need not only pharmacology treatments but also non-pharmacology treatments and complementary therapy to reduce their stress. Music therapy is one type of complementary therapy. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of saluang, which is a form of Indonesian traditional music, on reducing the stress of type II diabetes mellitus patients. The design of this study was quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest. There were 20 participants, who were all diagnosed as type II diabetes mellitus patients. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). Data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests. The average stress level of the type II diabetes mellitus patients obtained before receiving saluang music therapy was 22.5 (SD 5.0), and after receiving saluang music therapy the value was 14.5 (SD 2.3); this difference was significant (p < 0.01). Therefore, we can conclude that Indonesian traditional music can be used as therapy to reduce the patient stress level. So, it is recommended that saluang be used as a complementary therapy for type II diabetes mellitus patients.

EFEKTIVITAS CRYOTHERAPY TERHADAP TINGKAT NYERI PUNGGUNG BAWAH IBU POSTPARTUM PADA MASA PANDEMI COVID-19

Low back pain is one of the complaints felt by some and almost all postpartum mothers since pregnancy. Low back pain occurs in 45-55% of mothers in the first week postpartum, continues at 8 weeks postpartum as much as 68% and 60% in the next 8 months. Persistent pain causes inhibition of maternal activities and reduces quality of life. One type of complementary therapy is cryotherapy cold therapy with ice. Cold therapy is a therapeutic modality that can absorb tissue temperature so that there is a decrease in tissue temperature through the conduction mechanism. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of cryoptherapy on low back pain in postpartum mothers during home care during the COVID-19 pandemic. This type of research is a pre-experimental design with One Group Pretest-Posttest with a sample of 22 early postpartum mothers (24 hours to 1 week after delivery). Data were analyzed using paired t test. The results showed that the average pain scale before being given cryotherapy was 6.82 with a standard deviation of 0.907, the average self-efficacy after being given cryotherapy was 3.96 with a standard deviation of 0.64. There was a difference in the mean value between before and after the cryotherapy intervention was given with p-value = 0.002 (p<0.05). It is hoped that health services can use cryotherapy as a therapy to reduce postpartum maternal back pain.

Mat pilates method improve postural alignment women undergoing hormone therapy adjunct to breast cancer treatment. Clinical trial

The purpose of the study is to analyze the effects of a mat Pilates intervention on the postural alignment and balance of breast cancer women receiving hormone therapy. A two-arm randomized clinical trial included 34 breast cancer survivors divided randomly between a mat Pilates group (n = 18), that performed 16 weeks of mat Pilates exercises, and a control group (n = 16), who were invited to maintain their daily routine activities and received three educational sessions. Data collection occurred at baseline and at post-intervention time. The postural alignment was assessed using the Postural Assessment Software (SAPO) and the balance was assessed by the MINIBESTest. When the two-way ANOVA was performed on postural alignment results, a significant statistical difference was found in the angle between acromions and the anterior-superior iliac spines of the mat Pilates group (p = 0.036). When compared to the post-intervention period, the mat Pilates method had an improved horizontal alignment of the anterior-superior iliac spines (p = 0.039) and vertical alignment of the acromion head on the right side (p = 0,016). Also, the participants of the Pilates group showed a significant statistical difference in the balance (p = 0.034). The control group had an improved vertical trunk alignment on the left side (p = 0,048). The control group and the mat Pilates method group improved in some aspects, however the mat Pilates method was effective in improving the postural alignment and the balance of breast cancer survivors receiving hormone therapy and may be recommended in oncological rehabilitation as a type of complementary therapy.

Effect Of Complementary Acupressure Therapy On Emesis Gravidarum In Pregnant Women Trimester I

Vomiting nausea (Emesis Gravidarum) is a reasonable symptom and often occurs in first trimester pregnancies. Vomiting nausea is caused by increased esterogen hormones, HCG factors, changes in liver glycogen metabolism, and psychological factors. The treatment of vomiting nausea in pregnancy consists of pharmacology and nonfarmalogy. Nonpharmacological therapy is performed by diet setting, emotional support, and acupressure. Nonpharmacological therapy is a type of complementary therapy that can be used as an intervention to overcome nausea, among others: acupressure, acupuncture, relaxation, and therapy. The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of acupressure complementary therapy in reducing vomiting nausea (Emesis Gravidarum) in pregnant women trimester I. The research method used is Quasy Experiment Design with one group pretest and posttest design approach. Sampling techniques use proportional random sampling. Instruments used to measure vomiting nausea are questionnaires. The collected data is analyzed using the Wilcoxon test.

Effectiveness of Providing Self-Management Education to Deal With Emesis Gravidarum on Decreasing Nausea Vomiting Pregnancy (NVP) at Private Practice Midwives Puskesmas IV Denpasar Selatan Work Area

Data shows that 50-90% of pregnant women experience nausea in the first trimester. Excessive gravida emesis will gain weight into hyperemesis gravidarum and can disrupt the mother’s metabolism including dehydration, weight loss, alkalosis, and hypokalemia. Non-pharmacological therapy is a type of complementary therapy that can be used as an intervention to treat nausea including hypnotherapy, acupressure, acupuncture, relaxation, and therapy. Self-management is regulating personal activities to live a better and healthier life. Emesis gravidarum self-management education adopts the concept of Corbin and Straus in Kate and Halsted (2003), which is outlined in a module that aims to enable pregnant women to educate themselves to be able to regulate their own lives, set goals, and provide self-reinforcement in dealing with nausea, vomiting experienced. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of providing self-management education to deal with emesis gravidarum on decreasing Nausea Vomiting Pregnancy (NVP). This is an analytical study with a pre-experimental research design (quasi-experiment design) with one group pre-test-post test design. This study was conducted at Private Practice Midwives (hereafter: PMB) Puskesmas IV Denpasar Selatan Work Area. The population of this study was pregnant women who came to PMB in the work area of Puskesmas IV Denpasar Selatan. The sample of this study was pregnant women who experienced nausea and vomiting in the first trimester who met the inclusion criteria where the sampling technique in this study was accidental sampling. Analysis of the data in this study was conducted t-test to test the differences between the two pre and post-test distributions before self-management education was given and after the providing of self-management education was faced with emesis gravidarum. The results of the study showed that the average value of PUQE 24 hours before the self-management module was given was 9.5, the standard deviation value was 2.591, the minimum and maximum values were 6.0-14.0. The average value of PUQE-24 hours after the self-management module was given was 7.1, the standard deviation value was 2,273 with minimum and maximum values of 3.0-12.0. The conclusion of giving self-management module is effective to decrease nausea and vomiting in first-trimester pregnant women.

EFFECTIVENESS OF BACK EFFLUERAGE MASSAGE THERAPY USING CLOVE OIL ON UNDER BACK PAIN IN POSTPARTUM MOTHER

Background: Low back pain is one of the complaints felt by most or even almost all postpartum mothers since pregnancy. The prevalence of events ranges from 20-90% since pregnancy. About 80% of postpartum mothers experience low back pain after a normal delivery. One type of complementary therapy that can be done to increase the pain threshold is back effluerage massage with clove oil. Cloves contain components of eugenol compounds that have analgesic effects.Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of back effluerage massage therapy using clove oil on lower back pain in postpartum mothers.Methods: This study uses a Quasi-Experiment method with the design of One Group Pretest-Posttest. The sample in this study was postpartum mothers with vaginal delivery who experienced lower back pain. Consecutive sampling technique will be used to determine the sample. The number of samples taken in this study were 20 people as a treatment group. The instrument used was an observation sheet to determine the pain scale of the respondent. This research will be carried out within one year. The results of the study will be analyzed by paired T test.Results: The results obtained p value 0.005 (p value <0.05) so that there is an effect of back effluerage massage therapy using clove oil on lower back pain in postpartum mothers.Conclusion: The results of this study are expected to evaluate the effect of back effluerage massage therapy using clove oil on lower back pain in postpartum mothers. Key words: Back Effluerage Massage, Clove Oil, Low Back Pain, Postpartum Mothers.

Perbedaan Pengetahuan Ibu Hamil Trimester I Setelah Diberikan Self Management Education Menghadapi Emesis Gravidarum Di BPM Wilayah Kerja Puskesmas IV Denpasar Selatan


 
 Mual muntah adalah salah satu gejala paling awal, paling umum dan paling menyebabkan stress pada awal kehamilan. Terapi nonfarmakologi merupakan jenis terapi komplementer yang dapat digunakan sebagai intervensi untuk mengatasi mual. Self management education emesis gravidarum mengadopsi konsep dari Corbin dan Straus dalam Kate dan Halsted (2003) tersebut, yang dituangkan dalam bentuk modul yang bertujuan agar ibu hamil dapat mengedukasi diri sendiri sehingga mampu untuk mengatur hidup sendiri, mengatur tujuan, dan menyediakan penguat untuk diri sendiri dalam menangani mual muntah yang dialami.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan pengetahuan setelah self management education menghadapi emesis gravidarum. Penelitian ini penelitian analitik dengan desain penelitian pre eksperimen (quasi experiment design) dengan rancangan one group pre test – post test design. Penelitian ini akan dilakukan di BPM Wilayah Kerja Puskesmas IV Denpasar Selatan . Populasi penelitian ini ibu hamil yang datang ke BPM wilayah kerja puskesmas IV Denpasar Selatan. Sampel penelitian ini ibu hamil yang mengalami mual muntah pada trimester I yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi dimana tehnik sampling pada penelitian ini acidental sampling . Analisa Bivariat akan dilakukan uji t Test untuk menguji perbedaan dua distribusi pre dan post test sebelum diberikan self management education dan setelah pemberian self management education menghadapi emesis gravidarum. rata-rata pengetahuan sebelum diberikan modul self management adalah 59,1 , nilai standar deviasi 10,856, nilai minimum dan maksimum 33-87. Nilai rata-rata pengetahuan setelah diberikan modul self management adalah 73,6 , nilai standar deviasi 13,874 dengan nilai minimum dan maksimum 47-100

The Effect of Giving Reimprinting Intervention in Changes in Cholesterol Levels

Background: Today’s lifestyle changes have resulted in changes in the pattern of diseases from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases. One disease that threatens the community is hypercholesterolemia. Pharmacological therapy was performed often fails due to non-compliance hypercholesterolemia patients. One of the complementary therapies that can be done is by implementing reimprinting. Reimprinting is a development of the SEFT method (Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique). Reimprinting is the implementation of SEFT therapy independently. Methods: The research design used was quasy experimental with a Randomized Pretest and Posttest Control Group Design. The variables observed in this study were cholesterol levels (total cholesterol, HDL (High Density Lipoprotein), LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein), triglycerides). The group of respondents in this study was divided into 2 groups, namely group 1 (not given an intervention) and group 2 (the group given the reimprinting intervention). To find out the effectiveness of the reimprinting method, a paired-samples t test was used with a significance of 0.05. Result: The results of the study showed that the administration of reimprinting intervention in hypercholesterolemia patients was effective in reducing total cholesterol levels, increasing HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol levels and lowering LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol levels. Conclusion: Reimprinting is one type of complementary therapy that can be done as a support for pharmacological therapy given to hypercholesterolemia patients to improve the success of the therapy. To get optimal results, an active role is needed from health personnel to be able to apply reimprinting therapy, obedience of hypercholesterolemia patients to attend each therapy session, active hypercholesterolemia patients should perform therapy independently and obey any advice has been given by health workers to consume drugs routinely and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Experiences of healing therapy in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

BackgroundThe use and value of different complementary therapies requires investigation. In particular, qualitative research is required to understand the perceptions and experiences of patients who undergo healing therapy as one type of complementary therapy. The aim of this research is to consider patients perceptions and experiences following a course of healing therapy.MethodsTwenty two patients took part in this study. This included 13 patients with irritable bowel disease (3 male, 10 female, 47.6 ± 15.0 years), 6 patients with ulcerative colitis (3 male, 3 female, 48.5 ± 25.6 years) and 3 female patients with Crohn’s Disease (45.0 ± 5.2 years). Each patient undertook a single semi-structured interview following a course of healing therapy. The data was analysed using a thematic analysis.ResultsThree broad themes were identified from patient interviews (1) The understanding and expectation of healing (2) Experiences and reflection on healing (3) Impact and outcome of healing. The details of each theme are explored within the text, often revealing a unique experience of healing therapy.ConclusionPatients were open towards the benefits that could be attained by healing, although most patients were not sure what healing would entail. Some patients expected to be relaxed by the sessions. However, the most consistent reports were that patients experienced a relaxing sensation that was generated within the session and lasted for a time period after the sessions. In addition to this the healing appeared to be associated with patients feeling more tolerant of their symptoms. Patients valued the therapist and their input into the healing process. It should be noted however, that this report cannot consider the efficacy of the treatment. The meaning of complementary therapy from the perspective of Thai women with breast cancer

A qualitative study based on Heideggerian phenomenology was conducted with 17 Thai women who had survived breast cancer and had utilized at least one type of complementary therapy. The study explored the meaning of such therapy and the data were collected by an in-depth interview, a demographic data-recording form, and a reflective journal. The data were analyzed by using an interpretative process that was described by Cohen, Kahn, and Steeves. Six themes were generated in relation to the meaning of complementary therapy as perceived by the participants: cancer-controlling treatment; mental strengthening; mind and body therapy; self-determination; natural therapy; and conventional therapy integration. The knowledge gained from this study will help health-care providers better understand the role that complementary therapies play in the lives of women whose lives are threatened by cancer. It is important for health-care providers to be more proactive in the culturally sensitive promotion of using complementary therapies based on the women's values and preferences.

Prevalence and Predictors of Complementary Therapy Use in Advanced-Stage Breast Cancer Patients

Information on the use of complementary therapies in patients with advanced-stage cancer is limited. Given the disease and treatment complexities associated with the care of patients with metastatic cancer, oncology clinicians would benefit from having an appreciation of the extent of usage of unconventional, adjunctive therapies among these patients. This study evaluated the prevalence and demographic predictors of complementary therapy use in a sample of women with metastatic breast cancer. Subjects with stage IV breast cancer were recruited from six treatment facilities in New England. A written, mailed survey assessing complementary therapy use and sociodemographic information was completed by each subject, while disease and treatment information was obtained from medical records. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. Of the 173 participants, 78% used at least one type of complementary therapy, 43% used two or more types, and 23% used three or more types, excluding spiritual practices and physical exercise. When including spiritual practices and physical exercise, 90% used at least one complementary therapy, 70% used two or more types, and 45% used three or more types. Visits to alternative health practitioners were predicted by younger age (P = .009) and higher education level (P = .002). Younger participants (P = .045) were more likely to use and spend more money on vitamins and herbal products (P = .02). Use of unconventional therapies is pervasive among metastatic breast cancer patients, particularly among those who are younger and highly educated. Oncology providers need to assess patients' complementary therapy use and consider potential interactions with prescribed treatment protocols.

Critical review of arthritis self-management strategy use.

Introduction Notions of self care and self management of common, but serious, health conditions were once viewed with skepticism by clinicians. However, over time, enlightened health care professionals have come to embrace the idea of informed, participative collaboration with patients as a key strategy for enhancing the effectiveness of clinical diagnostic and therapeutic interventions (1). Although these ideas are being absorbed into mainstream contemporary medicine and health care, our understanding of the range of self-initiated actions consumers use and the factors related to use of these actions is inadequate. Sobel (2) suggests that self care is the “hidden” health care system and that self care, rather than primary, secondary, or tertiary care, comprises the majority of health care. Others suggest that self-management activities are determinants of well being, potentially intervening between health status and health outcomes (3–5). If these assertions are true, we must have a clear understanding of the factors related to and outcomes associated with strategy use so people with chronic conditions can be guided in effective self-management practices. The terms self management and self care, often used interchangeably among lay and professional persons, are broadly defined as the activities people engage in to promote health and/or manage chronic conditions (6–9). These activities are usually self initiated and often undertaken with little to no supervision from health care professionals. For this article we use both phrases (self care and self management) to refer to the wide range of activities people use to promote personal health and to detect, prevent, and treat common health problems. The use of self-initiated actions to manage arthritis conditions is well recognized in the scientific literature and among health care providers. Applying the above definition of self management to arthritis, a variety of strategies could be used to manage the symptoms and consequences of the disease, such as taking medication, exercising, wearing splints or braces, taking herbs or supplements, or seeking care from alternative care providers. Two review articles by Ernst (10,11) show that use of complementary and alternative strategies is common but variable among people with rheumatic disease, with most people using at least 1 type of complementary therapy (e.g., special diets, jewelry, vitamins, herbs, prayer, relaxation, or massage). Little is known, however, about the broad range of strategies that could be used to manage arthritis, the degree to which people with arthritis use various strategies, and factors related to use of specific strategies. The purpose of this article is to address these gaps in the scientific literature.

Homeopathy and Women's Health Care

A 1997 survey revealed that 40% of Americans use some type of complementary therapy or medicine and that many use such therapies in conjunction with treatments prescribed to them by conventional medical practitioners. One alternative modality that is growing in popularity is homeopathy. Although use of this modality is growing, many health care providers know very little about it. This article provides an introduction to homeopathy, including its historical origins and theoretical principles. Also included is a review of two meta-analyses that examined the efficacy of homeopathy in clinical trials. The homeopathic approach to prolonged pregnancy is presented as an example of a potential application to women's health. Information on education and certification in homeopathy is provided, along with resources on homeopathy available to women's health care providers. Implications for nursing practice are discussed.
