Fluid–structure interaction analysis of curved wedges entering into water

The water entry of wedges with curvature differs significantly from that of linear wedges, which have been fully investigated and formulated. The safety and integrity of structures prompt an urgent investigation into the mechanism by which the curvature affects slamming loads and structural responses during water entry. This study examines the slamming force characteristics, pressure distributions, fluid jet evolutions, and structural response behaviors of two-dimensional curved wedge sections, considering five different curvatures and two panel thicknesses. A two-way coupling fluid–structure interaction (FSI) solver has been proposed within an open-source framework. The FSI solver was validated against published literature to ensure its high-fidelity. The small deadrise angle results in a more complicated time-domain characteristics for the slamming pressure, with a gradual transition from a single peak to a double peak. The half-peak pressure duration time were defined, and the quantitative results reveal that the hydroelastic effect of the linear wedge is significantly higher than the curved wedges. When considering the geometric curvature, the elastic wedges do not consistently reduce the peak slamming pressure and lengthen the pulse time. Additionally, large deformations generated by the panel vibrations alter the evolutionary pattern of the fluid jet. In contrast to the linear wedge, the structural responses of the curved wedges show distinctive two-stage behaviors.

A two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction method for predicting the slamming loads and structural responses on a stiffened wedge

Ships navigating through rough seas are subjected to slamming loads from waves, which can lead to structural damage and maritime accidents. The wedge model is commonly employed to investigate slamming loads and structural responses. While a stiffened wedge closely resembles a real ship hull plate, incorporating it into fluid–structure interaction simulations presents challenges. This paper proposes a two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction method to examine slamming loads and structural responses of a free fall non-prismatic stiffened steel wedge. Hydrodynamic loads are determined through Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes computations using OpenFOAM, while structural responses are predicted using the finite element analysis (FEA) software Calculix. To achieve two-way coupling between computational fluid dynamics and FEA simulations, a coupling library for partitioned multi-physics simulations, preCICE, is introduced. The computed impact pressure and stress align well with available experimental data. Various free fall heights are investigated in the numerical simulations. The results indicate that elastic deformation mitigates impact pressure, while the presence of transverse ribs enhances the rigidity of the flexible plate. The duration of pressure and the peak slamming pressure exhibit an inverse correlation. Greater free fall heights result in shorter pressure duration times, and smaller free fall heights may reduce rise time. Three-dimensional effects cause pressure to decrease along the midpoint of the plate toward both sides. Additionally, structural stress in the central area exceeds that in the areas on both sides at the same height. In conclusion, the proposed two-way coupled model proves suitable for accurately and efficiently computing hydroelastic slamming on flexible wedges.

Two-way coupling fluid–structure interaction analysis on dynamic response of offshore wind turbine

The monopile-supported offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are subjected to the wave and current loadings. Affected by currents and waves, monopile-supported OWTs are also vulnerable to scour. However, the effect of scour and currents on the dynamic behavior of the monopile are not fully appreciated. This study conducted the model tests to evaluate the effect of scour depth and flow velocity on the lateral responses of support structure. Furthermore, the two-way (T-W) coupling fluid–structure interaction (FSI) method was proposed to evaluate the dynamic responses of piles in sand. The support structure is modeled using ABAQUS, a finite-element models software package, by considering the nonlinear soil–structure interaction effects, STAR-CCM + tools has been employed to model the FSI which are fed into ABAQUS to predict the structure’s dynamic response. Using the proposed method, a parametric study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of scour depths, flow velocities on the dynamic responses of OWTs. The results indicate that scour altered the fundamental frequency of OWT, causing resonance. An increase in scour depth and flow velocity increased the dynamic responses of support structure, which are detrimental for the safety and stability of the OWT system.

Fluid structure interaction versus rigid-wall approach in the study of the symptomatic stenosed carotid artery: Importance of wall compliance and resilience of loose connective tissue.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of a compliant wall approach in modeling of non‐Newtonian and non‐physiological blood flows. A case study of a stenosed and symptomatic carotid bifurcation was considered to show the influence of the wall‐resilience assumption on the flow parameters obtained with numerical simulations. Patient‐specific data concerning the geometry and flow conditions were collected and used to carry out two‐way coupled fluid structure interaction simulations of the pulsatile blood flow through carotid artery. The wall compliance was considered separately as related to the wall‐elasticity and as associated with the reaction of the loose connective tissue surrounding the carotid bifurcation. The obtained hemodynamic parameters were compared to those which were found in rigid‐wall simulations. The difference between the results obtained for rigid‐wall and compliant‐wall approaches for the peak‐systolic area‐averaged wall shear stress achieved 35%, whereas the difference between the time‐averaged local vorticity and shear strain reached, respectively, 42% and 43%. The influence of the highly resilient wall on the monitored hemodynamic parameters was significant even if time‐averaged values are compared, which suggests that these metrics are considerably overestimated if the wall compliance is not considered. Moreover, the findings show that the mechanical response of the loose connective tissue cannot be neglected in blood flow simulations. Additionally, this study indicates that stiffening of the arterial wall due to atherosclerosis significantly rises hemodynamic parameters. This explains the therapeutic benefits of surgical removal of plaque lesions formed in the carotid bifurcation (endarterectomy).

A two-way coupled FSI model for the rapid evaluation of accidental loads following ship hard grounding

The assessment of structural crashworthiness following ship grounding events should consider the influence of multi-physics on dynamic response. To date, this has been achieved by computationally expensive approaches combining explicit 3D FEA with hydrodynamic solvers (e.g. Conti et al. (2021); Kim et al. (2021)). To offer an alternative, this paper presents a rapid six degree of freedom (6-DoF) two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction (FSI) model that could be used for the rapid evaluation of ship dynamic response and structural crashworthiness during hard grounding events. The time domain solution is based on a simplified contact analysis model that combines the external dynamics idealization of Taimuri et al. (2020) with an extended version of the internal mechanics analytical formulation of Simonsen (1997a) and Sun et al. (2017). The plate cutting angle is calibrated based on the rock geometry and hull indentation. A ray-tracing algorithm that utilizes panels and the tip of a conical rock is implemented to idealize hull penetration. The model is numerically validated by comparing results against LS-DYNA simulations for a box-shaped barge of double bottom configuration and a passenger vessel. Parametric studies demonstrate that longitudinal and vertical forces produced by different models compare well. However, the lateral forces for the study case of a passenger ship progressing along a straight path are shown to be underestimated. This is because the proposed method (i) does not allow for the influence of lateral loading on longitudinal hull members and (ii) overestimates the forces in regions of extreme curvature (e.g. fore shoulder, bow and boundaries of the hull).

Fluid structure interaction of a subaqueous pendulum: Analyzing the effect of wake correction via large eddy simulations

The dynamic behavior of a subaqueous cylindrical pendulum and corresponding flow dynamics are investigated. The objectives were twofold: (i) to examine whether the two-dimensional model equations sufficiently capture the three-dimensional dynamics and (ii) to investigate the emerging three-dimensional vortical flow structures. Large eddy simulations with two-way coupling fluid structure interaction were carried out using the immersed boundary method to simulate the motion of the pendulum and its interactions with the initially stagnant water. The resulting pendulum motion is compared against measured data obtained in a series of experimental tests to validate the simulation results and the model equations with and without wake corrections. An analysis of the flow vorticity revealed the development of a vortex ring during the first swing and the formation of tip vortices. The evolution of the vortex rings emerging from the motion of the subaqueous cylindrical pendulum was visualized using Q-criteria showing a reasonable agreement with vortical structures observed in the experiment using particle imaging velocimetry. The hydrodynamic moments acting on the simulated pendulum and the moments calculated from the model equations are analyzed. Using the insights from these numerical simulations, a modification of the wake correction is proposed to enhance the accuracy of the rate of decay and period. The transient effect of coherent flow on pendulum dynamics, especially the added mass effect, is discussed.

Fluid–Structure Interaction Modeling of Flowfields Within Kevlar-Walled Wind Tunnels

A detailed three-dimensional (3D) two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction simulation of a hybrid anechoic wind tunnel (HAWT) test section is presented with modeling all important effects, namely, turbulence, Kevlar wall porosity, and deflection. The complete 3D flowfield around a 3-ft chord NACA0012 placed into a HAWT test section is assessed. The Kevlar deflections are captured using finite element analysis, whereas 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to resolve the flowfield. Source terms are used to model the transpiration flow across the pores of the Kevlar fabric. Results are validated against an extensive experimental dataset. Aerodynamic properties of the airfoil are validated using airfoil pressure coefficients, airfoil wake pressure coefficients, and lift and drag coefficients. Boundary effects are validated against Kevlar wall pressure coefficients, Kevlar displacement, and transpiration velocity through the Kevlar fabric. Overall, a good agreement has been found among all comparisons presented. While some minor discrepancies were observed, these primarily stem from geometrical irregularities of the model and wind tunnel unresolved in the computational fluid dynamics. Overall, the fluid–structure interaction model now enables a detailed assessment of HAWTs to enhance their performance and can support experimental testing.

Numerical Simulation for Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) of a High-Rise Building Based on Two-Way Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction Method

The vortex shedding phenomenon caused by flow separation at windward corners of a high-rise building would lead to significant vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs). This paper proposes a novel and efficient two-way coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method named as equivalent lumped mass system (ELMS) method to study the wind-induced responses of the Common Advisory Aeronautical Council (CAARC) building. The numerical results of ELMS are validated based on available data of aeroelastic tests. To verify the computational efficiency of ELMS method, this study also employs the other two two-way coupled FSI methods (free-form deformation (FFD) method and mapping interpolation algorithms in system coupling (MIASC) method) to simulate the response of the same high-rise building. Furthermore, the VIV mechanisms of the high-rise building are explicitly discussed based on the numerical results of the ELMS method combined with large eddy simulation (LES). The outcomes show that the ELMS method could well capture the significant amplification of cross-wind response and “lock-in” phenomenon at the range of the critical wind speed. Moreover, the computational efficiency of the ELMS method is much improved compared with the other two FSI methods. The spatial correlation and spectral coherence of the local loads at different heights of the building are increased significantly at the “lock-in” stage. The findings in this study would facility the comprehensive understanding of the VIV phenomena of the high-rise building and provide an efficient two-way coupled FSI method for engineers and researchers involved in the wind-resistant design of slender tall buildings.

An Approach to Variation Simulation of Final Aircraft Assembly With Presence of Sealant

Abstract The article discusses the process of aeronautical structure assembly in the presence of a sealant between the parts to be joined. An attempt to estimate the influence of sealant on assembly quality in terms of variation analysis is presented. The sealant is considered a highly viscous liquid that is applied to the surfaces of the assembled parts before the start of the final assembly. The modeling approach is based on the simulation of two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction between fluid sealant and compliant structural parts. Reynolds lubrication approximation is used in the fluid dynamics problem and variational formulation of contact problem combined with static condensation is used in the structural one. The joining of two aircraft panels is used as a numerical test for demonstration of the developed approach. Various phenomena connected with the presence of sealant are demonstrated. In particular, the difference in the fastener loosening due to sealant flow between different types of fasteners is investigated. Results of variation simulation show that the presence of sealant should be considered among determining factors in the analysis of assembly quality.

A multi-stage approach of simulating turbulence-induced vibrations in a wire-wrapped tube bundle for fretting wear prediction

MYRRHA (Multi-purpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications) is a prototype of a Generation IV reactor that will be constructed in Mol, Belgium. It is a liquid metal fast reactor, using lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) as a coolant. Flow-induced vibrations resulting in fretting wear could be of concern due to the high density of LBE. Additionally, a wire is wrapped around each fuel rod to preserve their mutual distance in the hexagonal array, which affects the flow pattern.In this research turbulence-induced vibrations are investigated. Large-eddy simulation is a sound technique to acquire turbulent loads, but it is computationally demanding to combine this in a two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulation. However, because accurate prediction of the vibration of cylinders subject to liquid flow typically requires a two-way simulation due to the added-mass effect, a methodology consisting of multiple steps is proposed. First, the modal characteristics of the pin are determined in a fully coupled FSI simulation of a bare bundle. The material properties used in this model are modified to take into account the effect of the wire, which was determined experimentally beforehand. The resulting characteristics are then used to construct a realistic structural model, employed in a one-way simulation with turbulent loads from a large-eddy simulation of a wire-wrapped bundle.In this structural model contact with neighboring rods and the hexagonal duct is detected, providing realistic boundary conditions to the rod and allowing to extract contact forces. These forces are further post-processed together with the sliding displacement to calculate work rates, which is an important parameter for fretting wear prediction. Two pins of a 19-pin bundle were investigated, the central pin and a pin located in one of the corners. The simulation is repeated for multiple friction coefficients, and its impeding effect of friction on sliding motions was confirmed to moderate fretting.

Effect of aligned magnetic field on the 2DOF VIV suppression and convective heat transfer characteristics of a circular cylinder

The present study numerically explores vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and convective heat transfer around a sprung cylinder under influence of the uniform streamwise and transverse magnetic fields. The finite volume method and an explicit integration approach were respectively employed to solve the governing equations of the fluid flow and rigid-body motion and analyze the two-way coupling fluid-structure interaction. Also, the magnetohydrodynamic was incorporated by adding the Lorentz force into the source terms of the momentum equations. To validate the numerical method, the obtained results were compared with those of other studies, and a good agreement was observed. The computations were performed at reduced velocities of 2–9 and different Stuart numbers (N). The results demonstrated that the y-directional magnetic field (By) had much higher effectiveness than the x-directional one (Bx), in the sense that the By magnetic field completely suppressed (100%) the transverse and longitudinal vibrations. However, depending on the reduced velocity, under the Bx magnetic field, the amplitude of the VIV could decline, remain unchanged, or even rise for Ur > 7. For both magnetic fields, by increasing Stuart number and suppressing the vortex shedding, the Nusselt number decreased. Interestingly, for By, when N > Nc, the cylinder wake was completely disappeared and the Nusselt number increased.

Water Hammer and Harmonic Excitation Response With Fluid-Structure Interaction in Elbow Piping

Abstract This study focuses on the numerical analysis of a piping structure subjected to the water-hammer event caused by a rapid valve closure that is combined with external harmonic loading representing an idealized machine excitation. The fluid–structure interaction procedure applied to solutions involves the method of characteristic for the fluid equations with the finite element method for pipe structures, which are modeled as beams. Junction coupling at the pipe elbow governs the two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction, and both the friction and Poisson couplings are incorporated as well. There is an application on a piping structure that consists of a valve, tank, and elbow that are defined as boundary conditions. The solved result quantities include pressure and bending stress responses as well as dynamic displacement modes of the piping structure. Comparisons of the results show that water hammer loading combined with the mechanical excitation load induces significantly increased displacements and higher stress peaks when frequencies of the harmonic load and the acoustic natural mode of the piping system coincide. Additionally, the resulting mode of lateral structural vibration of the piping member closely resembles an analytically solved eigenmode of the beam. The conclusion is that dynamically changing flows due to a water hammer event can solely excite natural frequencies of the piping structure causing resonance in the system.

Hemodynamic simulation of abdominal aortic aneurysm on idealised models: Investigation of stress parameters during disease progression

Background and ObjectiveAnalysis and prediction of rupture risk of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) facilitates planning for surgical interventions and assessment of plausible treatment modalities. Present approach of using maximum diameter criterion, is giving way to hemodynamic and bio-mechanical based predictors in conjunction with Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. Detailed studies on hemodynamic and bio-mechanical parameters at the stage of maximum growth/rupture is of practical importance to the clinical community. However, understanding the changes in these parameters at different stages of growth, will be useful for clinicians, in planning routine monitoring to reduce the risk of sudden rupture. This is particularly useful in medical resource starved nations. Present study investigates the hemodynamic and bio-mechanical changes occurring during the growth stages of aortic aneurysms using fluid structure interaction (FSI) studies. MethodSix idealized fusiform aneurysm models spanning high (shorter) and low (longer) values of the shape index (DHr), have been analysed at three different stages of growth viz, a Dmax of 3.5cm, 4.25cm, 5cm. Pulsatile Newtonian blood flow, passing through an elastic arterial vessel wall with uniform thickness is assumed. Two-way coupled fluid structure interaction have been employed for the numerical simulation of blood flow dynamics and arterial wall mechanics. ResultsWall shear stress (WSS) parameters and vonmises stress indicators, co-relating rupture and thrombus formation, have been extracted and reported, at each growth stage. When the aneurysm progresses in diameter, the areas recording abnormally low TAWSS, as well as areas of high/low OSI were found to increase at different rates for shorter and longer aneurysms. Moreover, drastic increase in the maximum wall stresses (MWS) and wall displacement were observed as the aneurysm approached the critical diameter. ConclusionHemodynamic predictors were found to be highly dependent on the shape index (DHr), when the aneurysm was small, whereas significant influence of DHr on the wall stresses happens, as the aneurysm approaches the critical diameter. Inconsistent variation of these indicators exhibited by shorter aneurysms (high DHr) at different growth stages, demands routine monitoring (using scans), of such aneurysms, to prevent unexpected rupture.

Lattice Boltzmann method for fluid–structure interaction in compressible flow

We present a two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction scheme for rigid bodies using a two-population lattice Boltzmann formulation for compressible flows. An arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian formulation of the discrete Boltzmann equation on body-fitted meshes is used in combination with polynomial blending functions. The blending function approach localizes mesh deformation and allows treating multiple moving bodies with a minimal computational overhead. We validate the model with several test cases of vortex induced vibrations of single and tandem cylinders and show that it can accurately describe dynamic behavior of these systems. Finally, in the compressible regime, we demonstrate that the proposed model accurately captures complex phenomena such as transonic flutter over an airfoil.

Fluid-structure coupled biotransport processes in aortic valve disease

Biological transport processes near the aortic valve play a crucial role in calcific aortic valve disease initiation and bioprosthetic aortic valve thrombosis. Hemodynamics coupled with the dynamics of the leaflets regulate these transport patterns. Herein, two-way coupled fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulations of a 2D bicuspid aortic valve and a 3D mechanical heart valve were performed and coupled with various convective mass transport models that represent some of the transport processes in calcification and thrombosis. Namely, five different continuum transport models were developed to study biochemicals that originate from the blood and the leaflets, as well as residence-time and flow stagnation. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and platelet activation were studied for their role in calcification and thrombosis, respectively. Coherent structures were identified using vorticity and Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) for the 2D and 3D models, respectively. A very close connection between vortex structures and biochemical concentration patterns was shown where different vortices controlled the concentration patterns depending on the transport mechanism. Additionally, the relationship between leaflet concentration and wall shear stress was revealed. Our work shows that blood flow physics and coherent structures regulate the flow-mediated biological processes that are involved in aortic valve calcification and thrombosis, and therefore could be used in the design process to optimize heart valve replacement durability.

A two-stage model of an arteriovenous fistula maturation process

An arteriovenous fistula has been a widely accepted vascular access for hemodialysis, however, a fistula maturation process is still not fully understood. In the short period of time, right after vein and artery shunting, the physical and biological changes take place mainly in the venous wall. A two-stage modeling method of arteriovenous fistula maturation process was proposed and presented. The first stage of the maturation was modeled with two-way coupled fluid structure interaction computer simulations. Whereas for the second, biological stage, a model was based on the change in the elasticity of the venous wall due to wall shear stress (WSS) modifications. The relation between stress and radial and circumferential strain, based on Lame's theory, makes possible to introduce a mathematical model defining modulus of elasticity, averaged WSS, and venous diameter as time functions. The presented model enables one to predict changes in the monitored parameters in the arteriovenous fistula taking place in the time longer than 90 days. We found that probably the majority of fistulas can be assessed to be mature too early, when the adequate blood flow rate is achieved but mean WSS still remains at the non-physiological level (>10 Pa).

Two-Way Coupling Fluid–Structure Interaction Analysis and Tests of Shaft Vibration and Clearance Flow Across Plain Annular Seal

Shaft vibration caused by rotor dynamic (RD) fluid force generated by the seal clearance flow has caused several problems. Because such vibration is a coupled phenomenon of clearance flow and shaft vibration, a coupling analysis is essential to solve these problems. In this study, a two-way coupling fluid–structure interaction (FSI) analysis of the seal clearance flow and shaft vibration of a rotor system was conducted and verified through experiments. The rotor system used was a vertical, flexible rotor system with a plain annular seal. In the numerical analysis of the seal clearance flow, the continuity equation and momentum equations, which were averaged across the film thickness, were numerically solved. To suppress the numerical instability, which is unique to the coupling analysis, and improve its numerical stability, a method of successively correcting pressure and shaft acceleration values was adopted so that the continuity equation and rotor equations of motion could be satisfied at every time step. By performing the coupling simulation, the frequency response characteristics of whirling amplitude and leakage flow were investigated. In regard to the stability of the system, the rotational speeds at which self-excited vibration occurs (onset speed of instability: OSI) in its increasing condition and ceases (onset speed of dropdown: OSD) in its decreasing condition were investigated. The coupling analysis results reasonably agree with the experimental results, which demonstrate the validity of the analysis method. In addition, the influence of static eccentricity and whirling amplitude on stability (OSI and OSD) was clarified, which are useful in the design stage of turbomachinery.

Three-dimensional vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder at subcritical Reynolds numbers with low-[formula omitted] correction

Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) method equipped with the shear stress transport (SST)K−ω model is widely used to simulate the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of elastically-mounted rigid cylinders subjected to fluid flow. Previous studies show that this method is very difficult to capture the maximum response of the cylinder occurring in the upper regime. Moreover, previous numerical studies by using this method mainly focus on the two-dimensional (2-D) simulations. In reality, VIV is a three-dimensional (3-D) phenomenon, the 3-D effect must then be incorporated in the numerical simulations. To improve the accuracy of the RANS method with SSTK−ω, the low-Reynolds numbers (Re) correction technique is applied to the numerical model in the present study and the 3-D VIV responses of an elastically-mounted cylinder subjected to the subcritical fluid flow regime are numerically investigated. The two-way coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) framework is developed and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are performed for a range of Reynolds numbers Re=2000−12000. Numerical results show that the present method can lead to more accurate VIV response estimations compared to the previous numerical studies. Moreover, the formation of the wake vortex shedding modes and its transition are well captured by this method.

Unsteady Flow and Structural Behaviors of Centrifugal Pump under Cavitation Conditions

Cavitation has a significant effect on the flow fields and structural behaviors of a centrifugal pump. In this study, the unsteady flow and structural behaviors of a centrifugal pump are investigated numerically under different cavitation conditions. A strong two-way coupling fluid-structure interaction simulation is applied to obtain interior views of the effects of cavitating bubbles on the flow and structural dynamics of a pump. The renormalization-group k-ε turbulence model and the Zwart–Gerbe–Belamri cavitation model are solved for the fluid side, while a transient structural dynamic analysis is employed for the structure side. The different cavitation states are mapped in the head-net positive suction head (H-NPSH) curves and flow field features inside the impeller are fully revealed. Results indicate that cavitating bubbles grow and expand rapidly with decreasing NPSH. In addition, the pressure fluctuations, both in the impeller and volute, are quantitatively analyzed and associated with the cavitation states. It is shown that influence of the cavitation on the flow field is critical, specifically in the super-cavitation state. The effect of cavitation on the unsteady radial force and blade loads is also discussed. The results indicate that the averaged radial force increased from 8.5 N to 54.4 N in the transition progress from an onset cavitation state to a super-cavitation state. Furthermore, the structural behaviors, including blade deformation, stress, and natural frequencies, corresponding to the cavitation states are discussed. A large volume of cavitating bubbles weakens the fluid forces on the blade and decreases the natural frequencies of the rotor system. This study could enhance the understanding of the effects of cavitation on pump flow and structural behaviors.
