Capturing the electron-electron cusp with the coupling-constant averaged exchange-correlation hole: A case study for Hooke's atoms.

In density-functional theory, the exchange-correlation (XC) energy can be defined exactly through the coupling-constant (λ) averaged XC hole n̄xc(r,r'), representing the probability depletion of finding an electron at r' due to an electron at r. Accurate knowledge of n̄xc(r,r') has been crucial for developing XC energy density-functional approximations and understanding their performance for molecules and materials. However, there are very few systems for which accurate XC holes have been calculated since this requires evaluating the one- and two-particle reduced density matrices for a reference wave function over a range of λ while the electron density remains fixed at the physical (λ = 1) density. Although the coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) method can yield exact results for a two-electron system in the complete basis set limit, it cannot capture the electron-electron cusp using finite basis sets. Focusing on Hooke's atom as a two-electron model system for which certain analytic solutions are known, we examine the effect of this cusp error on the XC hole calculated using CCSD. The Lieb functional is calculated at a range of coupling constants to determine the λ-integrated XC hole. Our results indicate that, for Hooke's atoms, the error introduced by the description of the electron-electron cusp using Gaussian basis sets at the CCSD level is negligible compared to the basis set incompleteness error. The system-, angle-, and coupling-constant-averaged XC holes are also calculated and provide a benchmark against which the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof and local density approximation XC hole models are assessed.

Attaining the maximum Bose–Einstein condensation in a finite-size hard-core boson model

We propose a model for hard-core bosons in a lattice which allows to achieve the optimal occupation number predicted by Tennie et al (2017 Phys. Rev. B 96 064502) for a finite number of sites. The model is based on an extension of the Hamiltonian of the so-called Hubbard star, whose quantum properties are studied by means of quantum information descriptors such as the von Neumann entropy and the mutual information. These metrics are analyzed as a function of the one- and two-particle reduced density matrices, allowing to explore the relationship between condensation and entanglement by means of a control parameter that, under a given limit, connects our findings with previous results. All developments comprised in this article have been derived by analytical methods.

Efficient quantum analytic nuclear gradients with double factorization.

Efficient representations of the Hamiltonian, such as double factorization, drastically reduce the circuit depth or the number of repetitions in error corrected and noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) algorithms for chemistry. We report a Lagrangian-based approach for evaluating relaxed one- and two-particle reduced density matrices from double factorized Hamiltonians, unlocking efficiency improvements in computing the nuclear gradient and related derivative properties. We demonstrate the accuracy and feasibility of our Lagrangian-based approach to recover all off-diagonal density matrix elements in classically simulated examples with up to 327 quantum and 18 470 total atoms in QM/MM simulations with modest-sized quantum active spaces. We show this in the context of the variational quantum eigensolver in case studies, such as transition state optimization, ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, and energy minimization of large molecular systems.

Quantum phase transitions in a model Hamiltonian exhibiting entangled simultaneous fermion-pair and exciton condensations

Quantum states of a novel Bose-Einstein condensate, in which both fermion-pair and exciton condensations are simultaneously present, have recently been realized theoretically in a model Hamiltonian system. Here we identify quantum phase transitions in that model between fermion-pair and exciton condensations based on a geometric analysis of the convex set of ground-state two-particle reduced density matrices (2-RDMs). The 2-RDM set provides a finite representation of the infinite parameter space of Hamiltonians that readily reveals a fermion-pair condensate phase and two distinct exciton condensate phases, as well as the emergence of first- and second-order phase transitions as the particle number of the system is increased. The set, furthermore, shows that the fermion-exciton condensate (FEC) lies along the second-order phase transition between the exciton and fermion-pair condensate phases. The detailed information about the exciton and fermion-pair phases, the forces behind these phases, as well as their associated transitions provides additional insight into the formation of the FEC condensate, which we anticipate will prove useful in its experimental realization.

Quantum simulation of quantum phase transitions using the convex geometry of reduced density matrices

Transitions of many-particle quantum systems between distinct phases at absolute-zero temperature, known as quantum phase transitions, require an exacting treatment of particle correlations. In this work, we present a general quantum-computing approach to quantum phase transitions that exploits the geometric structure of reduced density matrices. While typical approaches to quantum phase transitions examine discontinuities in the order parameters, the origin of phase transitions---their order parameters and symmetry breaking---can be understood geometrically in terms of the set of two-particle reduced density matrices (2-RDMs). The convex set of 2-RDMs provides a comprehensive map of the quantum system including its distinct phases as well as the transitions connecting these phases. Because 2-RDMs can potentially be computed on quantum computers at nonexponential cost, even when the quantum system is strongly correlated, they are ideally suited for a quantum-computing approach to quantum phase transitions. We compute the convex set of 2-RDMs for a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick spin model on IBM superconducting-qubit quantum processors. Even though computations are limited to few-particle models due to device noise, comparisons with a classically solvable 1000-particle model reveal that the finite-particle quantum solutions capture the key features of the phase transitions including the strong correlation and the symmetry breaking.

Spin-density calculation via the graphical unitary group approach

In this work we discuss the calculation of the spin-density matrix from fundamental spin principles as implemented in the COLUMBUS Program System employing the graphical unitary group approach (GUGA). First, a general equation for the spin-density matrix is derived in terms of the one-and two-particle reduced density matrices, quantities that are spin-independent and readily available within the GUGA formalism. Next, the evaluation of this equation using the Shavitt loop values is discussed. Finally, the spatially resolved counterpart of the spin-density matrix, the spin distribution, is calculated for the phenalenyl radical and structures produced by heteroatoms with mono- and di-substitutions. The physical meaning of the spin-density along with its computational description using various methods is discussed putting special emphasis on negative contributions to the spin-density and their quantification via a spin-promotion index.

Towards the simulation of large scale protein-ligand interactions on NISQ-era quantum computers.

We explore the use of symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) as a simple and efficient means to compute interaction energies between large molecular systems with a hybrid method combining NISQ-era quantum and classical computers. From the one- and two-particle reduced density matrices of the monomer wavefunctions obtained by the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), we compute SAPT contributions to the interaction energy [SAPT(VQE)]. At first order, this energy yields the electrostatic and exchange contributions for non-covalently bound systems. We empirically find from ideal statevector simulations that the SAPT(VQE) interaction energy components display orders of magnitude lower absolute errors than the corresponding VQE total energies. Therefore, even with coarsely optimized low-depth VQE wavefunctions, we still obtain sub kcal mol−1 accuracy in the SAPT interaction energies. In SAPT(VQE), the quantum requirements, such as qubit count and circuit depth, are lowered by performing computations on the separate molecular systems. Furthermore, active spaces allow for large systems containing thousands of orbitals to be reduced to a small enough orbital set to perform the quantum portions of the computations. We benchmark SAPT(VQE) (with the VQE component simulated by ideal statevector simulators) against a handful of small multi-reference dimer systems and the iron center containing human cancer-relevant protein lysine-specific demethylase 5 (KDM5A).

Challenges for variational reduced-density-matrix theory with three-particle N-representability conditions.

The direct variational optimization of the two-electron reduced density matrix (2RDM) can provide a reference-independent description of the electronic structure of many-electron systems that naturally capture strong or nondynamic correlation effects. Such variational 2RDM approaches can often provide a highly accurate description of strong electron correlation, provided that the 2RDMs satisfy at least partial three-particle N-representability conditions (e.g., the T2 condition). However, recent benchmark calculations on hydrogen clusters [N. H. Stair and F. A. Evangelista, J. Chem. Phys. 153, 104108 (2020)] suggest that even the T2 condition leads to unacceptably inaccurate results in the case of two- and three-dimensional clusters. We demonstrate that these failures persist under the application of full three-particle N-representability conditions (3POS). A variety of correlation metrics are explored in order to identify regimes under which 3POS calculations become unreliable, and we find that the relative squared magnitudes of the cumulant three- and two-particle reduced density matrices correlate reasonably well with the energy error in these systems. However, calculations on other molecular systems reveal that this metric is not a universal indicator for the reliability of the reduced-density-matrix theory with 3POS conditions.

Normal ordered exponential approach to thermal properties and time-correlation functions: general theory and simple examples

A normal ordered exponential parametrisation is used to obtain equations for thermal one-and two-particle reduced density matrices, as well as free energies, partition functions and entropy for both Fermionic (electronic) and Bosonic (vibrational) Hamiltonians. A first principles derivation of the equations, relying only on a simple Wick's theorem and starting from the differential equation , is presented that yields a differential equation for the amplitudes representing density cumulants, as well as the grand potential. In contrast to other approaches reported in the literature, the theory does not use the interaction picture and an integral formulation as a starting point but rather requires a propagation of the resulting differential equation for the amplitudes in the Schrödinger representation. While the theory is applicable to general classes of many-body problems in principle, here, the theory is illustrated using simple model systems. As an application of the related time-dependent formulation numerically exact time-autocorrelation functions and absorption spectra are obtained for harmonic Franck–Condon problems. These examples illustrate the basic soundness of the scheme and are used for pedagogical purposes. Other approaches in the literature are only discussed briefly and no detailed comparative discussion is attempted.

Symmetry-Adapted Perturbation Theory Based on Multiconfigurational Wave Function Description of Monomers.

We present a formulation of the multiconfigurational (MC) wave function symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). The method is applicable to noncovalent interactions between monomers which require a multiconfigurational description, in particular when the interacting system is strongly correlated or in an electronically excited state. SAPT(MC) is based on one- and two-particle reduced density matrices of the monomers and assumes the single-exchange approximation for the exchange energy contributions. Second-order terms are expressed through response properties from extended random phase approximation (ERPA). The dispersion components of SAPT(MC) have been introduced in our previous works [HapkaM.J. Chem. Theory Comput.2019, 15, 1016−102730525591; HapkaM.J. Chem. Theory Comput.2019, 15, 6712–672331670950]. SAPT(MC) is applied either with generalized valence bond perfect pairing (GVB) or with complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) treatment of the monomers. We discuss two model multireference systems: the H2 ··· H2 dimer in out-of-equilibrium geometries and interaction between the argon atom and excited state of ethylene. Using the C2H4* ··· Ar complex as an example, we examine second-order terms arising from negative transitions in the linear response function of an excited monomer. We demonstrate that the negative-transition terms must be accounted for to ensure qualitative prediction of induction and dispersion energies and develop a procedure allowing for their computation. Factors limiting the accuracy of SAPT(MC) are discussed in comparison with other second-order SAPT schemes on a data set of small single-reference dimers.

Second-Order Dispersion Energy Based on Multireference Description of Monomers.

We propose a method for calculating a second-order dispersion energy for weakly interacting multireference systems in arbitrary electronic states. It is based on response properties obtained from extended random phase approximation equations. The introduced formalism is general and requires only one- and two-particle reduced density matrices of monomers. We combine the new method with either generalized valence bond perfect pairing (GVB) or complete active space (CAS) self-consistent field description of the interacting systems. In addition to a general scheme, three approximations, leading to significant reduction of the computational cost, are developed by exploiting Dyall partitioning of the monomer Hamiltonians. For model multireference systems (H2···H2 and Be···Be) the method is accurate, unlike its single-reference-based counterpart. Neither GVB nor CAS description of single-reference monomers improves the dispersion energy with respect to the Hartree-Fock-based results.

Variational reduced density matrix method in the doubly occupied configuration interaction space using three-particle N-representability conditions.

Ground-state energies and two-particle reduced density matrices (2-RDMs) corresponding to N-particle systems are computed variationally within the doubly occupied configuration interaction (DOCI) space by constraining the 2-RDM to satisfy a complete set of three-particle N-representability conditions known as three-positivity conditions. These conditions are derived and implemented in the variational calculation of the 2-RDM with standard semidefinite programming algorithms. Ground state energies and 2-RDMs are computed for N2, CO, CN-, and NO+ molecules at both equilibrium and nonequilibrium geometries as well as for pairing models at different repulsive interaction strengths. The results from the full three-positivity conditions are compared with those from the exact DOCI method and with approximated 2-RDM variational ones obtained within two-positivity and two-positivity plus a subset of three-positivity conditions, as recently reported [D. R. Alcoba et al., J. Chem. Phys. 148, 024105 (2018) and A. Rubio-García et al., J. Chem. Theory Comput. 14, 4183 (2018)]. The accuracy of these numerical determinations and their low computational cost demonstrate the usefulness of the three-particle variational constraints within the DOCI framework.

Electronic Excited States from the Adiabatic-Connection Formalism with Complete Active Space Wave Functions.

It is demonstrated how the recently proposed multireference adiabatic-connection (AC) approximation for electron correlation energy ( Pernal , K. Electron Correlation from the Adiabatic Connection for Multireference Wave Functions . Phys. Rev. Lett. 2018 , 120 , 013001 ) can be extended to predicting correlation energy in excited states of molecules. It is the first successful application of the AC approach to computing excited-states energies of molecules using a complete active space (CAS) wave function as a reference. The unique feature of the AC-CAS approach with respect to popular methods such as CASPT2 and NEVPT2 is that it requires only one- and two-particle reduced density matrices, making it possible to efficiently treat large spaces of active electrons. Application of the simpler variant of AC, the AC0, which is based on the first-order expansion of the AC integrand at the uncorrelated system limit, to excited states yields excitation energies with accuracy rivaling that of the NEVPT2 method but at greatly reduced computational cost.

Orbital Optimization in the Active Space Decomposition Model.

We report the derivation and implementation of orbital optimization algorithms for the active space decomposition (ASD) model, which are extensions of complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and its occupation-restricted variants in the conventional multiconfiguration electronic-structure theory. Orbital rotations between active subspaces are included in the optimization, which allows us to unambiguously partition the active space into subspaces, enabling application of ASD to electron and exciton dynamics in covalently linked chromophores. One- and two-particle reduced density matrices, which are required for evaluation of orbital gradient and approximate Hessian elements, are computed from the intermediate tensors in the ASD energy evaluation. Numerical results on 4-(2-naphthylmethyl)-benzaldehyde and [36]cyclophane and model Hamiltonian analyses of triplet energy transfer processes in the Closs systems are presented. Furthermore, model Hamiltonians for hole and electron transfer processes in anti-[2.2](1,4)pentacenophane are studied using an occupation-restricted variant.

Propagating two-particle reduced density matrices without wave functions

Describing time-dependent many-body systems where correlation effects play an important role remains a major theoretical challenge. In this paper we develop a time-dependent many-body theory that is based on the two-particle reduced density matrix (2-RDM). We develop a closed equation of motion for the 2-RDM employing a novel reconstruction functional for the three-particle reduced density matrix (3-RDM) that preserves norm, energy, and spin symmetries during time propagation. We show that approximately enforcing $N$-representability during time evolution is essential for achieving stable solutions. As a prototypical test case which features long-range Coulomb interactions we employ the one-dimensional model for lithium hydride (LiH) in strong infrared laser fields. We probe both one-particle observables such as the time-dependent dipole moment and two-particle observables such as the pair density and mean electron-electron interaction energy. Our results are in very good agreement with numerically exact solutions for the $N$-electron wavefunction obtained from the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree-Fock method.

Pairing in a system of a few attractive fermions in a harmonic trap

We study a strongly attractive system of a few spin-(1/2) fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap, interacting via two-body contact potential. Performing exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian we analyze the ground state and the thermal state of the system in terms of one- and two-particle reduced density matrices. We show how for strong attraction the correlated pairs emerge in the system. We find that the fraction of correlated pairs depends on temperature and we show that this dependence has universal properties analogous to the gap function known from the theory of superconductivity. In contrast to the standard approach based on the variational ansatz and/or perturbation theory, our predictions are exact and are valid also in a strong-attraction limit. Our findings contribute to the understanding of strongly correlated few-body systems and can be verified in current experiments on ultra-cold atoms.

Perturbative correction for the basis set incompleteness error of complete-active-space self-consistent field

To reduce the basis set incompleteness of the complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) wave function and energy we develop a second-order perturbation correction due to single excitations to complete set of unoccupied states. Other than the one- and two-electron integrals, only one- and two-particle reduced density matrices are required to compute the correction, denoted as [2](S). Benchmark calculations on prototypical ground-state bond-breaking problems show that only the aug-cc-pVXZ basis is needed with the [2](S) correction to match the accuracy of CASSCF energies of the aug-cc-pV(X+1)Z quality.

Methods for the calculation of photoionization cross sections using the extended Koopmans' theorem

A new approach to the calculation of photoionization cross sections for atoms and molecules is described. The procedure requires for input only a wave function for the parent initial state, obviating the necessity of a separate calculation on the final bound state by making use of the recently developed Extended Koopmans' Theorem. Explicit formulas for the photoionization cross sections, in terms of the one- and two-particle reduced density matrices of the initial state wave function, have been obtained at several levels of sophistication, including the sudden approximation, an orbital model for the photoelectron, and a close-coupling model. In the latter two cases, equations have been derived for the optimization of the continuum orbitals required for the description of the outgoing photoelectron. Approximations which make the optimization equations more tractable are also discussed. 26 references.

Gaussian phase-space representation of fermion dynamics: Beyond the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation

A Gaussian operator representation for the many-body density matrix of fermionic systems, developed by Corney and Drummond [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 260401 (2004)], is used to derive approximate decoupling schemes for their dynamics. In this approach the reduced single electron density-matrix elements serve as stochastic variables which satisfy an exact Fokker-Planck equation. The number of variables scales as $\ensuremath{\sim}{N}^{2}$ rather than $\ensuremath{\sim}\text{exp}(N)$ with the basis set size, and the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation (TDHF) is recovered in the ``classical'' limit. An approximate closed set of equations of motion for the one- and two-particle reduced density matrices provides a direct generalization of the TDHF.

Electronic excited-state energies from a linear response theory based on the ground-state two-electron reduced density matrix

Ground-state two-particle reduced density matrices (2-RDMs) are used to calculate excited-state energy spectra. Solving the Schrodinger equation for excited states dominated by single excitations from the ground-state wavefunction requires the ground-state 2- and 3-RDMs. The excited states, however, can be obtained without a knowledge of the ground-state 3-RDM by two methods: (i) cumulant expansion methods which build the 3-RDM from the 2-RDM, and (ii) double commutator methods which eliminate the 3-RDM. Previous work [Mazziotti, Phys. Rev. A 68, 052501 (2003)] examined the accuracy of excited states extracted from ground-state 2-RDMs, which were calculated by full configuration interaction or the variational 2-RDM method. In this work we employ (i) advances in semidefinite programming to treat the excited states of water and hydrogen fluoride and chains of hydrogen atoms, and (ii) the addition of partial three-particle N-representability conditions to compute more accurate ground-state 2-RDMs. With the hydrogen chains we examine the metal-to-insulator transition as measured by the band gap (the difference between the ground-state and the first excited-state energies), which is difficult for excited-state methods to capture.
