Correlation length of the two-dimensional random field Ising model via greedy lattice animal

For the two-dimensional random field Ising model where the random field is given by independent and identically distributed mean zero Gaussian variables with variance ε2, we study (one natural notion of) the correlation length, which is the critical size of a box at which the influences of the random field and of the boundary condition on the spin magnetization are comparable. We show that as ε→0, at zero temperature the correlation length scales as eΘ(ε−4∕3) (and our upper bound applies for all positive temperatures).

The two-dimensional continuum random field Ising model

In this paper, we construct the two-dimensional continuum random field Ising model via scaling limits of a random field perturbation of the critical two-dimensional Ising model with diminishing disorder strength. Furthermore, we show that almost surely with respect to the continuum random field given by a white noise, the law of the magnetisation field is singular with respect to that of the two-dimensional continuum pure Ising model constructed by Camia, Garban and Newman (Ann. Probab. 43 (2015) 528–571).

Efficient algorithms for computing ground states of the 2D random-field Ising model

We investigate the application of graph-cut methods for the study of the critical behaviour of the two-dimensional random-field Ising model. We focus on exact ground-state calculations, crossing the phase boundary of the model at zero temperature and varying the disorder strength. For this purpose we employ two different minimum-cut–maximum-flow algorithms, one of augmenting-path and another of push-relabel style. We implement these approaches for the square and triangular lattice problems and compare their computational efficiency.

Exponential decay of correlations in the two-dimensional random field Ising model

We study the random field Ising model on $${\mathbb {Z}}^2$$ where the external field is given by i.i.d. Gaussian variables with mean zero and positive variance. We show that the effect of boundary conditions on the magnetization in a finite box decays exponentially in the distance to the boundary.

Ising model for melt ponds on Arctic sea ice

Perhaps the most iconic feature of melting Arctic sea ice is the distinctive ponds that form on its surface. The geometrical patterns describing how melt water is distributed over the surface largely determine the solar reflectance and transmittance of the sea ice cover, which are key parameters in climate modeling and upper ocean ecology. In order to help develop a predictive theoretical approach to studying melting sea ice, and the resulting patterns of light and dark regions on its surface in particular, we look to the statistical mechanics of phase transitions and introduce a two-dimensional random field Ising model which accounts for only the most basic physics in the system. The ponds are identified as metastable states in the model, where the binary spin variable corresponds to the presence of melt water or ice on the sea ice surface. With the lattice spacing determined by snow topography data as the only measured parameter input into the model, energy minimization drives the system toward realistic pond configurations from an initially random state. The model captures the essential mechanism of pattern formation of Arctic melt ponds, with predictions that agree very closely with observed scaling of pond sizes and transition in pond fractal dimension.

A Note on Exponential Decay in the Random Field Ising Model

For the two-dimensional random field Ising model (RFIM) with bimodal (i.e., two-valued) external field, we prove exponential decay of correlations either (1) when the temperature is larger than the critical temperature of the Ising model without external field and the magnetic field strength is small or (2) at any temperature when the magnetic field strength is sufficiently large. Unlike previous work on exponential decay, our approach is not based on cluster expansions but rather on arguably simpler methods; these combine an analysis of the Kert\'{e}sz line and a coupling of Ising measures (and also their random cluster representations) with different boundary conditions. We also show similar but weaker results for the RFIM with a general field distribution and in any dimension.

On the Decay of Correlations in the Random Field Ising Model

In a celebrated 1990 paper, Aizenman and Wehr proved that the two-dimensional random field Ising model has a unique infinite volume Gibbs state at any temperature. The proof is ergodic-theoretic in nature and does not provide any quantitative information. This article proves the first quantitative version of the Aizenman-Wehr theorem. The proof introduces a new method for proving decay of correlations that may be interesting in its own right. A fairly detailed sketch of the main ideas behind the proof is also included.

Effect of antifreeze protein on heterogeneous ice nucleation based on a two-dimensional random-field Ising model

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are the key biomolecules that protect many species from suffering the extreme conditions. Their unique properties of antifreezing provide the potential of a wide range of applications. Inspired by the present experimental approaches of creating an antifreeze surface by coating AFPs, here we present a two-dimensional random-field lattice Ising model to study the effect of AFPs on heterogeneous ice nucleation. The model shows that both the size and the free-energy effect of individual AFPs and their surface coverage dominate the antifreeze capacity of an AFP-coated surface. The simulation results are consistent with the recent experiments qualitatively, revealing the origin of the surprisingly low antifreeze capacity of an AFP-coated surface when the coverage is not particularly high as shown in experiment. These results will hopefully deepen our understanding of the antifreeze effects and thus be potentially useful for designing novel antifreeze coating materials based on biomolecules.

Critical behavior of the two-dimensional nonequilibrium zero-temperature random field Ising model on a triangular lattice.

We present a numerical study of the critical behavior of the nonequilibrium zero-temperature random field Ising model in two dimensions on a triangular lattice. Our findings, based on the scaling analysis and collapse of data collected in extensive simulations of systems with linear sizes up to L=65536, show that the model is in a different universality class than the same model on a quadratic lattice, which is relevant for a better understanding of model universality and the analysis of experimental data.

Polynomial chaos and scaling limits of disordered systems

Inspired by recent work of Alberts, Khanin and Quastel, we formulate general conditions ensuring that a sequence of multi-linear polynomials of independent random variables (called polynomial chaos<\i> expansions) converges to a limiting random variable, given by a Wiener chaos expansion over the $d$-dimensional white noise. A key ingredient in our approach is a Lindeberg principle<\i> for polynomial chaos expansions, which extends earlier work of Mossel, O’Donnell and Oleszkiewicz. These results provide a unified framework to study the continuum and weak disorder scaling limits<\i> of statistical mechanics systems that are disorder relevant<\i>, including the disordered pinning model, the (long-range) directed polymer model in dimension 1 + 1, and the two-dimensional random field Ising model. This gives a new perspective in the study of disorder relevance, and leads to interesting new continuum models that warrant further studies.

Influence of the aspect ratio and boundary conditions on universal finite-size scaling functions in the athermal metastable two-dimensional random field Ising model.

This work studies universal finite size scaling functions for the number of one-dimensional spanning avalanches in a two-dimensional (2D) disordered system with boundary conditions of different nature and different aspect ratios. To this end, we will consider the 2D random field Ising model at T=0 driven by the external field H with athermal dynamics implemented with periodic and forced boundary conditions. We have chosen a convenient scaling variable z that accounts for the deformation of the distance to the critical point caused by the aspect ratio. In addition, assuming that the dependence of the finite size scaling functions on the aspect ratio can be accounted for by an additional multiplicative factor, we have been able to collapse data for different system sizes, different aspect ratios, and different types of the boundary conditions into a single scaling function Q̂.

Characterization of kinetic coarsening in a random-field Ising model.

We report a study of nonequilibrium relaxation in a two-dimensional random field Ising model at a nonzero temperature. We attempt to observe the coarsening from a different perspective with a particular focus on three dynamical quantities that characterize the kinetic coarsening. We provide a simple generalized scaling relation of coarsening supported by numerical results. The excellent data collapse of the dynamical quantities justifies our proposition. The scaling relation corroborates the recent observation that the average linear domain size satisfies different scaling behavior in different time regimes.

Analysis of spanning avalanches in the two-dimensional nonequilibrium zero-temperature random-field Ising model

We present a numerical analysis of spanning avalanches in a two-dimensional (2D) nonequilibrium zero-temperature random field Ising model. Finite-size scaling analysis, performed for distribution of the average number of spanning avalanches per single run, spanning avalanche size distribution, average size of spanning avalanche, and contribution of spanning avalanches to magnetization jump, is augmented by analysis of spanning field (i.e., field triggering spanning avalanche), which enabled us to collapse averaged magnetization curves below critical disorder. Our study, based on extensive simulations of sufficiently large systems, reveals the dominant role of subcritical 2D-spanning avalanches in model behavior below and at the critical disorder. Other types of avalanches influence finite systems, but their contribution for large systems remains small or vanish.

Dynamical properties of random-field Ising model

Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are performed on a two-dimensional random field Ising model. The purpose of the present work is to study the disorder-induced changes in the properties of disordered spin systems. The time evolution of the domain growth, the order parameter, and the spin-spin correlation functions are studied in the nonequilibrium regime. The dynamical evolution of the order parameter and the domain growth shows a power law scaling with disorder-dependent exponents. It is observed that for weak random fields, the two-dimensional random field Ising model possesses long-range order. Except for weak disorder, exchange interaction never wins over pinning interaction to establish long-range order in the system.

Real-space imaging of fractional quantum Hall liquids

Electrons in semiconductors usually behave like a gas--as independent particles. However, when confined to two dimensions under a perpendicular magnetic field at low temperatures, they condense into an incompressible quantum liquid. This phenomenon, known as the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect, is a quantum-mechanical manifestation of the macroscopic behaviour of correlated electrons that arises when the Landau-level filling factor is a rational fraction. However, the diverse microscopic interactions responsible for its emergence have been hidden by its universality and macroscopic nature. Here, we report real-space imaging of FQH liquids, achieved with polarization-sensitive scanning optical microscopy using trions (charged excitons) as a local probe for electron spin polarization. When the FQH ground state is spin-polarized, the triplet/singlet intensity map exhibits a spatial pattern that mirrors the intrinsic disorder potential, which is interpreted as a mapping of compressible and incompressible electron liquids. In contrast, when FQH ground states with different spin polarization coexist, domain structures with spontaneous quasi-long-range order emerge, which can be reproduced remarkably well from the disorder patterns using a two-dimensional random-field Ising model. Our results constitute the first reported real-space observation of quantum liquids in a class of broken symmetry state known as the quantum Hall ferromagnet.

Avalanche distributions in the two-dimensional nonequilibrium zero-temperature random field Ising model

We present in detail the scaling analysis and data collapse of avalanche distributions and joint distributions that characterize the recently evidenced critical behavior of the two-dimensional nonequilibrium zero-temperature random field Ising model. The distributions are collected in extensive simulations of systems with linear sizes up to L=131072.

Numerical Evidence for Critical Behavior of the Two-Dimensional Nonequilibrium Zero-Temperature Random Field Ising Model

We give numerical evidence that the two-dimensional nonequilibrium zero-temperature random field Ising model exhibits critical behavior. Our findings are based on the results of scaling analysis and collapsing of data, obtained in extensive simulations of systems with sizes sufficiently large to clearly display the critical behavior.

Domain formation in membranes with quenched protein obstacles: Lateral heterogeneity and the connection to universality classes

We show that lateral fluidity in membranes containing quenched protein obstacles belongs to the universality class of the two-dimensional random-field Ising model. The main feature of this class is the absence of a phase transition: there is no critical point and macroscopic domain formation does not occur. Instead there is only one phase. This phase is highly heterogeneous with a structure consisting of microdomains. The presence of quenched protein obstacles thus provides a mechanism to stabilize lipid rafts in equilibrium. Crucial for two-dimensional random-field Ising universality is that the obstacles are randomly distributed and have a preferred affinity to one of the lipid species. When these conditions are not met standard Ising or diluted Ising universality applies. In these cases a critical point does exist which then marks the onset toward macroscopic demixing.

Dynamic effect of overhangs and islands at the depinning transition in two-dimensional magnets

With the Monte Carlo methods, we systematically investigate the short-time dynamics of domain-wall motion in the two-dimensional random-field Ising model with a driving field (DRFIM). We accurately determine the depinning transition field and critical exponents. Through two different definitions of the domain interface, we examine the dynamics of overhangs and islands. At the depinning transition, the dynamic effect of overhangs and islands reaches maximum. We argue that this should be an important mechanism leading the DRFIM model to a different universality class from the Edwards-Wilkinson equation with quenched disorder.

Short-time domain-wall dynamics in the random-field Ising model with a driving field

With Monte Carlo methods, we investigate the relaxation dynamics of a domain wall in the two-dimensional random-field Ising model with a driving field. The short-time dynamic behavior at the depinning transition is carefully examined, and the roughening process of the domain wall is observed. Based on the short-time dynamic scaling form, we accurately determine the transition field, static and dynamic exponents, and local and global roughness exponents. In contrast to the usual assumption, the results indicate that the domain interface does not belong to the universality class of the Edwards-Wilkinson equation. In particular, due to the dynamic effect of overhangs, the domain interface exhibits intrinsic anomalous scaling and spatial multiscaling behaviors, compatible with the experiments
