Optimizing bioelectromethanosynthesis of CO2 and membrane fouling mitigation in MECs via in-situ biogas recirculation

The CO2 bioelectromethanosynthesis via two-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) holds tremendous potential to solve the energy crisis and mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions. However, the membrane fouling is still a big challenge for CO2 bioelectromethanosynthesis owing to the poor proton diffusion across membrane and high inter-resistance. In this study, a new MEC bioreactor with biogas recirculation unit was designed in the cathode chamber to enhance secondary-dissolution of CO2 while mitigating the contaminant adhesion on membrane surface. Biogas recirculation improved CO2 re-dissolution, reduced concentration polarization, and facilitated the proton transmembrane diffusion. This resulted in a remarkable increase in the cathodic methane production rate from 0.4 mL/L·d to 8.5 mL/L·d. A robust syntrophic relationship between anodic organic-degrading bacteria (Firmicutes 5.29%, Bacteroidetes 25.90%, and Proteobacteria 6.08%) and cathodic methane-producing archaea (Methanobacterium 65.58%) enabled simultaneous organic degradation, high CO2 bioelectromethanosynthesis, and renewable energy storage.

A study of electron source preference and its impact on hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cells fed with synthetic fermentation effluent

ABSTRACTFermentation effluents from organic wastes contain simple organic acids and ethanol, which are good electron sources for exoelectrogenic bacteria, and hence are considered a promising substrate for hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). These fermentation products have different mechanisms and thermodynamics for their anaerobic oxidation, and therefore the composition of fermentation effluent significantly influences MEC performance. This study examined the microbial electrolysis of a synthetic fermentation effluent (containing acetate, propionate, butyrate, lactate, and ethanol) in two-chamber MECs fitted with either a proton exchange membrane (PEM) or an anion exchange membrane (AEM), with a focus on the utilization preference between the electron sources present in the effluent. Throughout the eight cycles of repeated batch operation with an applied voltage of 0.8 V, the AEM-MECs consistently outperformed the PEM-MECs in terms of organic removal, current generation, and hydrogen production. The highest hydrogen yield achieved for AEM-MECs was 1.26 L/g chemical oxygen demand (COD) fed (approximately 90% of the theoretical maximum), which was nearly double the yield for PEM-MECs (0.68 L/g COD fed). The superior performance of AEM-MECs was attributed to the greater pH imbalance and more acidic anodic pH in PEM-MECs (5.5–6.0), disrupting anodic respiration. Although butyrate is more thermodynamically favorable than propionate for anaerobic oxidation, butyrate was the least favored electron source, followed by propionate, in both AEM- and PEM-MECs, while ethanol and lactate were completely consumed. Further research is needed to better comprehend the preferences for different electron sources in fermentation effluents and enhance their microbial electrolysis.

Tetrachloroethane (TeCA) removal through sequential graphite-mixed metal oxide electrodes in a bioelectrochemical reactor

Electro-bioremediation offers a promising approach for eliminating persistent pollutants from groundwater since allows the stimulation of biological dechlorinating activity, utilizing renewable electricity for process operation and avoiding the injection of chemicals into aquifers. In this study, a two-chamber microbial electrolysis cell has been utilized to achieve both reductive and oxidative degradation of tetrachloroethane (TeCA). By polarizing the graphite granules cathodic chamber at −650 mV vs the standard hydrogen electrode and employing a mixed metal oxide (MMO) counter electrode for oxygen production, the reductive and oxidative environment necessary for TeCA removal has been established. Continuous experiments were conducted using two feeding solutions: an optimized mineral medium for dechlorinating microorganisms, and synthetic groundwater containing sulphate and nitrate anions to investigate potential side reactions. The bioelectrochemical process efficiently reduced TeCA to a mixture of trans-dichloroethylene, vinyl chloride, and ethylene, which were subsequently oxidized in the anodic chamber with removal efficiencies of 37 ± 2%, 100 ± 4%, and 100 ± 5%, respectively. The introduction of synthetic groundwater with nitrate and sulphate stimulated reductions in these ions in the cathodic chamber, leading to a 17% decrease in the reductive dechlorination rate and the appearance of other chlorinated by-products, including cis-dichloroethylene and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), in the cathode effluent. Notably, despite the lower reductive dechlorination rate during synthetic groundwater operation, aerobic dechlorinating microorganisms within the anodic chamber completely removed VC and 1,2-DCA. This study represents the first demonstration of a sequential reductive and oxidative bioelectrochemical process for TeCA mineralization in a synthetic solution simulating contaminated groundwater.

Study on Biological Pathway of Carbon Dioxide Methanation Based on Microbial Electrolysis Cell

Realization of CO2 resource utilization is the main development direction of CO2 reduction. The CO2 methanation technology based on microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) has the characteristics of ambient temperature and pressure, green and low-carbon, which meets the need of low-carbon energy transition. However, the lack of the system such as the change of applied voltage and the reactor amplification will affect the methane production efficiency. In this research, the efficiency of methane production with different applied voltages and different types of reactors was carried out. The results were concluded that the maximum methane production rate of the H-type two-chamber microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) at an applied voltage of 0.8 V was obtained to be 1.15 times higher than that of 0.5 V; under the same conditions of inoculated sludge, the reactor was amplified 2.5 times and the cumulative amount of methane production was 1.04 times higher than the original. This research can provide a theoretical basis and technical reference for the early industrial application of CO2 methanation technology based on MEC.

Bioelectrochemical methanation by utilization of steel mill off-gas in a two-chamber microbial electrolysis cell.

Carbon capture and utilization has been proposed as one strategy to combat global warming. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) combine the biological conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) with the formation of valuable products such as methane. This study was motivated by the surprising gap in current knowledge about the utilization of real exhaust gas as a CO2 source for methane production in a fully biocatalyzed MEC. Therefore, two steel mill off-gases differing in composition were tested in a two-chamber MEC, consisting of an organic substrate-oxidizing bioanode and a methane-producing biocathode, by applying a constant anode potential. The methane production rate in the MEC decreased immediately when steel mill off-gas was tested, which likely inhibited anaerobic methanogens in the presence of oxygen. However, methanogenesis was still ongoing even though at lower methane production rates than with pure CO2. Subsequently, pure CO2 was studied for methanation, and the cathodic biofilm successfully recovered from inhibition reaching a methane production rate of 10.8 L m−2d−1. Metagenomic analysis revealed Geobacter as the dominant genus forming the anodic organic substrate-oxidizing biofilms, whereas Methanobacterium was most abundant at the cathodic methane-producing biofilms.

Effects of voltage and tetracycline on horizontal transfer of ARGs in microbial electrolysis cells

ABSTRACT The abuse of antibiotics leads to the production of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) have been widely applicated in the field of degrading antibiotics. ARGs were increased via horizontal transfer in single and two-chamber MECs. As one of the critical parameters in MECs, voltage has a particular impact on the ARGs transfer via horizontal transfer. However, there have been few studies of ARGs transfer under the exposure of antibiotics and voltage in MECs. In this study, five concentrations of tetracycline (0, 1, 5, 10, 20 mg/L) were selected to explore the conjugative transfer frequency of plasmid-encoded the ARGs from the donor (E. coli RP4) to receptor (E. coli HB101) in MECs, two voltages (1.5 and 2.0 V) were used to explore the conjugative transfer frequency of ARGs in MECs, then, the transfer of ARGs in MECs under the co-effect of tetracycline and voltage was explored. The results showed that the conjugative transfer frequency of ARGs was significantly increased with the increase of tetracycline concentration and voltage, respectively (p < 0.05). Under the pressure of tetracycline and voltage, the conjugative transfer frequency of ARGs is significantly enhanced with the co-effect of tetracycline and voltage (p < 0.05). The oxidative response induced by electrical stimulation promotes the overproduction of reactive oxygen species and the enhancement of cell membrane permeability of donor and recipient bacteria in MECs. These findings provide insights for studying the spread of ARGs in MECs.

Efficient phosphorus recovery as struvite by microbial electrolysis cell with stainless steel cathode: Struvite purity and experimental factors

Phosphorus (P) recovery from waste streams is an essential choice due to the coming global P crisis. One promising solution is to recover P by microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). Both the P recovery effectiveness and product quality are of critical importance for application. In this study, a two-chamber MEC was constructed and the effects of applied voltage, NaAc concentration, Mg/P molar ratio, N/P molar ratio, and initial P concentration on P recovery and product purity were explored. The maximum P recovery efficiency of 99.64 % and crystal accumulation rate over 106.49 g/m3-d were achieved. Struvite (MAP) was confirmed as the final recovered product and the purity obtained could reach up to 99.95 %. Besides, higher applied voltage, N/P molar ratio and initial P concentration could promote P recovery efficiency, while the purity of MAP showed correlation with applied voltage, Mg/P molar ratio, N/P molar ratio and initial P concentration. The correlation between NaAc concentration and both of the above was not very significant. A lower energy consumption of 4.1 kWh/kg P was observed at the maximum P recovery efficiency. In addition, the efficiency of P recovery from real wastewater also could reach nearly 88.25 %. These results highlight the promising potential of efficient phosphorus recovery from P-rich wastewater by MEC.

3D printed anode electrodes for microbial electrolysis cells

Microbial electrolysis cells are used to produce high purity hydrogen from organic wastes. Electrodes are one of the most important components of microbial electrolysis cells because they may directly affect the system performance. Moreover, these electrodes are costly and may negatively affect electrolysis performance by giving chemical reactions with organic wastes. This study uses cheese whey wastewater as electrolyte, and a two-chambered microbial electrolysis cell with novel different shaped 3D printed anode electrodes. To improve mass transfer inside the cell, 3D designed, and printed electrodes are used in different geometries (rod, 1-cycled spiral, 2-cycled spiral, 3-cycled spiral, and 4-cycled spiral) by using cupper-based Electrifi filament. Electrochemical performance of the electrodes is observed by cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis. As a result, it is observed that the organic content of waste and electrode geometry directly affects the microbial electrolysis performance and hydrogen production. In the electrochemical analysis, 1-cycled spiral geometry has up to 2.6-fold higher current density in linear sweep voltammetry analysis. In addition, in the hydrogen production measurements, 1-cycled spiral geometry is 5-fold faster than other electrodes. It is observed that spiral shape of the electrodes improves the contact region between the electrode and electrolyte interface, and the charge transfer performance.

Increase of antibiotic resistance genes via horizontal transfer in single- and two-chamber microbial electrolysis cells.

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) have been applied for antibiotic degradation but simultaneously induced antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), thus representing a risk to disseminate antibiotic resistance. However, few studies were on the potential and risk of ARGs transmission in the MECs. This work assessed conjugative transfer of ARGs under three tested conditions (voltages, cell concentration, and donor/recipient ratio) in both single- and two-chamber MECs. The results indicated that voltages (> 0.9V) facilitated the horizontal frequency of ARGs in the single-chamber MECs and anode chamber of two-chamber MECs. The donor cell number (donor/recipient ratio was 2:1) increased the transfer frequency of ARGs. Furthermore, voltages ranged from 0.9 to 2.5V increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and cell membrane permeability in MECs. These findings offer new insights into the roles of ARG transfer under different applied voltages in the MECs, which should not be ignored for horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance.

The Effect of Anode Material on the Performance of a Hydrogen Producing Microbial Electrolysis Cell, Operating with Synthetic and Real Wastewaters

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of anode materials, namely a carbon nanotube (CNT)-buckypaper and a commercial carbon paper (CP) on the performance of a two-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC), in terms of hydrogen production and main electrochemical characteristics. The experiments were performed using both acetate-based synthetic wastewater and real wastewater, specifically the effluent of a dark fermentative hydrogenogenic reactor (fermentation effluent), using cheese whey (CW) as substrate. The results showed that CP led to higher hydrogen production efficiency and current density compared to the CNT-buckypaper anode, which was attributed to the better colonization of the CP electrode with electroactive microorganisms, due to the negative effects of CNT-based materials on the bacteria metabolism. By using the fermentation effluent as substrate, a two-stage process is developed, where dark fermentation (DF) of CW for hydrogen production occurs in the first step, while the DF effluent is used as substrate in the MEC, in the second step, to further increase hydrogen production. By coupling DF-MEC, a dual environmental benefit is provided, combining sustainable bioenergy generation together with wastewater treatment, a fact that is also reinforced by the toxicity data of the current study.

Feasibility of Using Electrodes with Ultralow Pt Loading in Two-Chamber Microbial Electrolysis Cells

Decreasing the Pt loading and surface area of the cathode was found to accelerate the hydrogen evolution reaction in microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) at low substrate concentrations. The experimental wire cathode used in this study had a reduced Pt loading of 20 µg Pt/cm2 and only 14% of the surface area of the control disk-type cathode. With the wire cathodes, peak current densities of 33.1 ± 2.3 A/m2 to 30.4 ± 0.5 A/m2 were obtained at substrate concentrations of 0.4 g/L and 1.0 g/L, respectively, which were 5.4 to 6.2 times higher than those obtained with the disk electrode (5.1–5.7 A/m2). The higher cathode overpotentials and higher current densities obtained with the wire electrode compared to those observed with the disk electrode were advantageous for hydrogen recovery, energy recovery efficiencies, and the hydrogen volume produced (8.5 ± 1.2 mL at 0.4 g/L to 23.0 ± 2.2 mL at 1.0 g/L with the wire electrode; 6.8 ± 0.4 mL at 0.4 g/L to 21.8 ± 2.2 mL at 1.0 g/L with the disk electrode). Therefore, the wire electrode, which used only 0.6% of the Pt catalyst amount in typical disk-type electrodes (0.5 mg Pt/cm2), was effective at various substrate concentrations. The results of this study are very promising because the capital cost of the MEC reactors can be greatly reduced if the wire-type electrodes with ultralow Pt loading are utilized in field applications.

Optimisation of the operational parameters for a comprehensive bioelectrochemical treatment of acid mine drainage

Bioelectrochemical systems provide a promising tool for the treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD). Biological sulphate reduction powered with electrical energy consumes acidity and produces sulphide, which can precipitate metals. However, the produced sulphide and the changes in pH resulting from the biological processes affect the efficiency and the environmental impacts of this treatment significantly. In this work, the effects of pH and sulphur speciation on the sulphate reduction rate (SRR) and comprehensive AMD treatment were evaluated in two-chamber microbial electrolysis cells at a cathode potential of −0.8 V vs. NHE. The increase of initial sulphate concentration from below 1000 mg to above 1500 mg S-SO42–/L increased SRR from 121 ± 25 to 177 ± 19 mg S-SO42–/L/d. SRR further increased to 347 mg S-SO42–/L/d when the operation mode was changed from batch to periodical addition of sulphate and acidity (363 mg S-SO42–/L/d and 22.6 mmol H+/L/d, respectively). The average SRR remained above 150 mg S-SO42–/L/d even at pH above 8.5 and with the total dissolved sulphide concentration increasing above 1300 mg S-TDSu/L. Operation at pH above 8 enabled the recovery of over 90% of the sulphur as dissolved sulphide and thus assisted in minimising the formation and release of toxic H2S.

Hydrogen production in two-chamber MEC using a low-cost and biodegradable poly(vinyl) alcohol/chitosan membrane

Hydrogen production was evaluated in two-chamber microbial electrolysis cells (MEC), where the chambers of the cell were separated using a new economical and environmentally friendly membrane made of poly (vinyl) alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS). The MEC performance was compared to that of Nafion. The obtained results indicated that the MEC performance for hydrogen production did not show significant differences between the PVA/CS and Nafion membranes. MEC with PVA/CS showed the hydrogen production rate and hydrogen yield of 1277 ± 46 mL H2Lcat−1d−1 and 974 ± 116 mL H2 gacetate−1, respectively. The PVA/CS membrane allowed acetate removal that was 7% higher than that of Nafion due to the lower pH gradient and a lower voltage drop that increased the ion transfer across the membrane.

Balancing Water Dissociation and Current Densities To Enable Sustainable Hydrogen Production with Bipolar Membranes in Microbial Electrolysis Cells.

Hydrogen production using two-chamber microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) is usually adversely impacted by a rapid rise in catholyte pH because of proton consumption for the hydrogen evolution reaction. While using a bipolar membrane (BPM) will maintain a more constant electrolyte pH, the large voltage loss across this membrane reduces performance. To overcome these limitations, we used an acidic catholyte to compensate for the potential loss incurred by using a BPM. A hydrogen production rate of 1.2 ± 0.7 L-H2/L/d (jmax = 10 ± 0.4 A/m2) was obtained using a Pt cathode and BPM with a pH difference (ΔpH = 6.1) between the two chambers. This production rate was 2.8 times greater than that of a conventional MEC with an anion exchange membrane (AEM, 0.43 ± 0.1 L-H2/L/d, jmax = 6.5 ± 0.3 A/m2). The catholyte pH gradually increased to 11 ± 0.3 over 9 days using the BPM and Pt/C, which decreased current production (jmax = 2.5 ± 0.3 A/m2). However, this performance was much better than that obtained using an AEM as the catholyte pH increased to 10 ± 0.4 after just one day. The use of an activated carbon cathode with the BPM enabled stable performance over a longer period of 12 days, although it reduced the hydrogen production rate (0.45 ± 0.1 L-H2/L/d).

Treatment of recalcitrant wastewater and hydrogen production via microbial electrolysis cells

A large amount of real complex wastewaters are generated every year, which leads to a great environmental burden. Various treatment technologies were deployed to remove the contaminants in the wastewaters. However, these actual wastewaters have not been sufficiently treated due to their complex properties, high-concentration organics, incomplete utilization of hard-biodegradable substrates, the high energy input required, etc. Recently, microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), a great potential technology, has emerged for various wastewater treatment, because not only do they demonstrate satisfactory performance during wastewater treatment, but they also generate renewable H2 as a clean energy carrier. Unlike previous reviews, this review introduced the characteristics of every complicated wastewater, and focused on analyzing and summarizing MEC development for wastewater treatment. The performances of MECs were systematically reviewed in terms of organics removal, H2 production, Columbic efficiency, and energy efficiency. MEC performances for treating actual complex wastewaters and producing H2 can be optimized through operation parameters, electrode materials, catalyst materials, etc. In addition, the challenges and opportunities including complexity of wastewaters, instability of H2 production, robust microorganisms, effect of membrane on two-chamber MEC, and integration of MEC with other treatment processes were deeply discussed. Except for the technical feasibility, both environmental feasibility and economic feasibility also need to meet social requirements. This review can indeed provide a basis for high-efficiency treatment and practical commercial applications of recalcitrant wastewaters via MECs in the future. Inhibitory effect of ethanol on the experimental electrical charge and hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs)

Fermentation effluents are exploited in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) for hydrogen production, but they may include ethanol and other compounds that are detrimental to MEC performance. Ethanol can disrupt microbial viability, and lactate makes MEC feeding more complex. The present work aimed to assess the effects of lactate and ethanol on hydrogen and electric current production in MECs to determine the corresponding inhibitory concentrations. A two-chamber MEC was inoculated with compost leachate and fed with lactate-ethanol mixtures at four ratios (total 2.5g COD L−1), and a volatile fatty acid mixture was used as a base substrate to achieve anolyte at a final concentration of 3.5g COD L−1. The MEC operated at 1.0V for 21days, and its performance was evaluated for COD removal, cathodic and energy efficiency. The inhibitory ethanol concentration was 0.8g COD L−1 (0.38gL−1), and lactate reduced the current density lag phase. The start of hydrogen production required 218±35C in the MEC system utilized. This work shows that ethanol content exerts an inhibitory effect on current and hydrogen production; moreover, a relationship between accumulated charge and accumulated hydrogen volume was found suitable to characterize the process.

EVALUACIÓN DE CELDAS DE ELECTRÓLISIS MICROBIANAS ALIMENTADAS CON HIDROLIZADO DE BAGAZO DE AGAVE PARA DETERMINAR LA FACTIBILIDAD DE PRODUCCIÓN DE BIOELECTROHIDRÓGENO

The use of biomass for alternative energy production has experienced a boom because of the low cost of raw material and the high added value of the product as far as hydrogen is concerned. Steam explosion is used as pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass to increase the accessibility of sugars. An approach based on sustainability and development of biorefineries allows proposing the integrated use of agave bagasse pretreatment fractions to produce bio-hydrogen. In this work, hydrolysates from steam-explosion pretreated agave bagasse were used as substrate in microbial electrolysis cells (MEC). Hydrolysates were evaluated at concentrations of 20 %, 40 % and 100 % (v/v). Besides, the use of hydrolysates was compared by analyzing two inoculum sources, compost leachate and granular sludge. The highest hydrogen production was 8.5 mL L-1 d-1, which was achieved using 20 % hydrolysate, 10 % compost leachate at the anodic potential of 0.8 V/Ag/AgCl in a two-chamber microbial electrolysis cell.

Hydrogen production rates with closely-spaced felt anodes and cathodes compared to brush anodes in two-chamber microbial electrolysis cells

Flat anodes placed close to the cathode or membrane to reduce distances between electrodes in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) could be used to develop compact reactors, in contrast to microbial fuel cells (MFCs) where electrodes cannot be too close due to oxygen crossover from the cathode to the anode that reduces performance. Graphite fiber brush anodes are often used in MECs due to their proven performance in MFCs. However, brush anodes have not been directly compared to flat anodes in MECs, which are completely anaerobic, and therefore oxygen crossover is not a factor for felt or brush anodes. MEC performance was compared using flat felt or brush anodes in two-chamber, cubic type MECs operated in fed-batch mode, using acetate in a 50 mM phosphate buffer. Despite placement of felt anodes next to the membrane, MECs with felt anodes had a lower hydrogen gas production rate of 0.32 ± 0.02 m3-H2/m3-d than brush anodes (0.38 ± 0.02 m3-H2/m3-d). The main reason for the reduced performance was substrate-limited mass transfer to the felt anodes. To reduce mass transfer limitations, the felt anode electrolyte was stirred, which increased the hydrogen gas production rate to 0.41 ± 0.04 m3-H2/m3-d. These results demonstrate brush electrodes can improve performance of bioelectrochemical reactors even under fully anaerobic conditions.

Clean hydrogen production in a full biological microbial electrolysis cell

The recent interest in microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) technology has led the research platform to develop full biological MECs (bioanode-biocathode, FB-MEC). This study focused on biohydrogen production from a biologically catalyzed MEC. A bioanode and a biocathode were initially enriched in a half biological MFC (bioanode-abiocathode, HB-MFC) and a half biological MEC (abioanode-biocathode, HB-MEC), respectively. The FB-MEC was established by transferring the biocathode of the HB-MEC and the bioanode of the HB-MFC to a two-chamber MEC. The FB-MEC was operated under batch (FB-MEC-B) and recirculation batch (FB-MEC-RB) modes of operation in the anodic chamber. The FB-MEC-B reached a maximum current density of 1.5 A/m2 and the FB-MEC-RB reached a maximum current density of 2.5 A/m2 at a similar applied voltage while the abiotic control system showed the maximum of 0.2 A/m2. Hydrogen production rate decreased in the FB-MEC compared to that of the HB-MEC. However, the cathodic hydrogen recovery increased from 42% obtained in the HB-MEC to 56% in the FB-MEC-B and 65% in the FB-MEC-RB, suggesting the efficient oxidation and reduction rates in the FB-MEC compared to the HB-MEC. The onset potential for hydrogen evolution reaction detected by linear sweep voltammetry analysis were −0.780 and −0.860 V vs Ag/AgCl for the FB-MEC-RB and the FB-MEC-B (−1.26 for the abiotic control MEC), respectively. Moreover, the results suggested that the FB-MEC worked more efficiently when the biocathode and the bioanode were enriched initially in half biological systems before transferring to the FB-MEC compared to that of the simultaneously enriched in one system.
