Trophic structure of fish assemblages in two offshore islands (Ulleungdo and Dokdo) of Korea revealed using stable isotope analysis

The objective of this study was to characterize the trophic structure of fish assemblages on the coasts of offshore islands and the eastern mainland of the Korean Peninsula. We compared the seasonal variability in the trophic structure of fish assemblages between the coasts of two island sites (Ulleungdo and Dokdo) and one mainland site (Hupo), which are on a similar latitude. We analyzed the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of fish assemblages during spring (April) and summer (August) 2021. No temporal differences in the isotope values of fish and basal resources (i.e., suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM)) were found over the sampling period at the Hupo site. In contrast, at the Ulleungdo and Dokdo sites, the fishes and SPOM showed seasonal differences in the δ13C and δ15N values between the two seasons. In particular, the fish δ15N values at the island sites were relatively higher in summer compared to those in spring, suggesting the seasonal variation in the food chains and/or trophic status between consumers and their dietary sources. These regional isotopic variations also result in differences in the seasonal tendencies of the isotopic niche parameters of fish assemblages between the mainland and island coasts. Such differences in the seasonal isotopic patterns of fish assemblages suggest a relatively substantial shift in the dietary resources available to fish consumers on island coasts compared to those on the mainland coast. Overall, our results suggest that fish assemblages in offshore island coasts have distinct seasonal variability in trophic characteristics in response to changing environmental conditions, including basal resources, compared with fish food webs on the mainland coast at similar latitudes.

Spatial and temporal variations in trophic structure of fish assemblages in the Yellow Sea revealed by C and N stable isotopes

In this study, we assessed spatial and temporal variations in the trophic structure of fish assemblages in the Yellow Sea during spring and summer 2022 and compared their isotopic niches between the Provisional Measure Zone (PMZ) and Korea's west areas (non-PMZ) within the Yellow Sea. Spatial and temporal differences in the diversity and dominant species of fish assemblages were found between the PMZ and non-PMZ areas between the seasons. The mean δ13C values of fish assemblages were relatively higher in the non-PMZ areas than in the PMZ areas. In contrast, no significant differences were found in the mean δ15N values between the areas. Generally, the isotopic niche indices were relatively narrow in the PMZ areas compared to those in the non-PMZ areas. Overall, these spatial differences between the PMZ and non-PMZ areas suggest different trophic diversity of fish assemblages, resulting from site-specific variations in environmental conditions and community composition.

Characterization of Trophic Structure of Fish Assemblages in the East and South Seas of Korea Based on C and N Stable Isotope Ratios

The aim of this study was to assess seasonal variation in the food-web structure of fish assemblages in the East (two sites) and the South (one site) Seas of Korea, and to compare the isotopic niche areas between the regions. To do this, we analyzed the community structures and the δ13C and δ15N values for fish assemblages, and their potential food sources collected during May and October 2020. There were spatial differences in the diversity and dominant species of fish assemblages between the two seas. The fish assemblages in the South Sea had relatively wide ranges of δ13C and δ15N (−22.4‰ to −15.3‰ and 7.4‰ to 13.8‰, respectively) compared to those (−22.1‰ to −18.0‰ and 9.8‰ to 13.6‰, respectively) in the East Sea. The δ13C and δ15N values of suspended particulate organic matter, zooplankton, and fish assemblages differed significantly among sites and between seasons (PERMANOVA, p < 0.05, in all cases). Moreover, isotopic niche indices were relatively higher in the South Sea compared to those in the East Sea. Such differences in food-web characteristics among sites are likely due to the specific environmental effects (especially, major currents) on the differences in the species compositions and, therefore, their trophic relationships. Overall, these results allow for a deeper understanding of the changing trophic diversity and community structure of fish assemblages resulting from climate variability.

Understanding trophic structure variation in fish assemblages of subtropical shallow lakes: Combined effects of ecosystem size, productivity, and disturbance

Global environmental change has altered biotic interactions in ecosystems. Trophic structure is a major characteristic of ecosystems, and understanding the factors determining trophic structure is thus important for predicting the response of ecological dynamics and ecosystem services to future environmental change. Different kinds of drivers, including ecosystem size, productivity, and disturbance, have been proposed to explain trophic structure variation in various ecosystems. Much remains unknown about how these drivers operate in determining trophic structure and its underlying mechanisms, particularly in shallow lakes. Here, we evaluated the relative importance of ecosystem size, productivity and disturbance in influencing the trophic structure of fish assemblages in 30 subtropical shallow lakes. We determined that (1) ecosystem size, productivity and disturbance had no effect on food chain length; (2) the mean trophic level increased with increasing ecosystem size and productivity, with productivity contributing the most to explaining the variance in mean trophic level; and (3) ecosystem size, productivity, and disturbance, alone or combined, affected the proportion of species at specific trophic levels. These results indicate the potential for systematic discrepancies in the drivers of trophic structure among different systems and highlight that focusing on food chain length alone may not be sufficient in reflecting the variation in trophic status. Thus, changes in the mean trophic level and specific trophic-level guilds must be considered in future lake management practices.

Seasonality and aquatic metacommunity assemblage in three abandoned gold mining ponds in the southwestern Amazon, Madre de Dios (Peru)

Worldwide demand for gold has caused increased extractive activities in the Western Amazon, resulting in a wide-scale transformation of the Madre de Dios river basin (Peru) due to Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM). These impactful activities profoundly affect the natural landscape and hydroscape as terra firme forest and floodplain habitats are deforested leaving a vast landscape of abandoned ponds that are subsequently colonized from surrounding water bodies. However, the metacommunity dynamics of these emergent networks of connected wetlands and their environmental drivers remain virtually unknown. Here, we present a one-year (May 2017–May 2018) study conducted to assess the composition, abundance and trophic structure of fish assemblages in three abandoned ASGM ponds and their interactions in relation to those of other freshwater groups (macroinvertebrates, phytoplankton and zooplankton). We aimed to determine the influence of environmental parameters on community composition, focused on flood pulse influence (FPI), seasonality, and to identify indicators for predicting aquatic communities’ assemblages. A remarkably abundance and diversity were found totaling 4601 sampled fish from 6 orders, 27 families, 68 genera and 103 species, as well as 87 macoinvertebrate, 71 phytoplankton and 44 zooplankton taxa. The two FPI ponds showed a more stable fish trophic structure throughout the year than the unique non-FPI, probably due to the floods provision of buffer against the lack of resources that occurs during the dry season. Conversely, fish of higher trophic levels were not detected during the dry and transition-to-wet seasons in the non-FPI pond surveyed. Community trajectory analysis showed greater stability of fish assemblages in the non-FPI pond compared to the FPI ponds, which experienced larger disturbance of environmental parameters and biotic inputs during flooding events. Detrended correspondence analysis showed floods as the key factor influencing aquatic communities and species accumulation. However, whereas floods had a large influence on fish and macroinvertebrates, seasonality was the main driver for plankton. FPI ponds showed six-fold higher fish and macroinvertebrate species richness than non-FPI ones, while plankton showed an opposite trend. FPI was the main factor determining the taxonomic composition of fish, followed by dissolved oxygen. Macroinvertebrates were also affected by FPI together with pH and the presence of grassed banks, while conductivity determined phytoplankton composition. Our study presents novel evidence on the highly heterogeneous communities of ASGM abandoned ponds, highlighting their important ecological value and potential role in providing of ecosystem services currently overlooked from conservation policies and management of the aquatic resources.

Hydropower affects fish trophic structure both downstream of the dam and upstream of the reservoir

ABSTRACT Dams often cause drastic changes in freshwater environments and can compromise the quality and availability of food resources in rivers. This study aims to analyze the influence of a dam on the trophic structure of fish assemblages in lotic areas located both upstream and downstream of the Irapé Hydroelectric Power Plant. Fish sampling occurred before (2003 to 2005) and after (2011 to 2017) the impoundment, which began in 2006. The trophic structure and species composition before dam construction were similar upstream of the reservoir and downstream of the dam. After the building of the dam, both aspects of the assemblages changed along the lotic stretches - the upstream incurred an increase in biomass of detritivores and a decrease of piscivores and omnivores, while downstream went exactly the opposite, causing a differentiation between the two assemblages. Because lotic areas upstream of reservoirs are also impacted by river damming, efforts for impact mitigation should also focus on these areas.

Primary production and depth drive different trophic structure and functioning of fish assemblages in French marine ecosystems

Investigating the drivers of fish assemblage trophic structure is a critical question, in order to better understand ecosystem functioning, predict the effects of perturbations and implement integrated management of exploited marine ecosystems. Ecosystemic surveys enabled the determination of the trophic structure of the fish assemblages in three French marine ecosystems, namely the Eastern English Channel, the Bay of Biscay and the Gulf of Lions, through the simultaneous collection of qualitative (stable isotopes and energy content) and quantitative (biomass) data. In the Bay of Biscay and in the Gulf of Lions, pelagic primary production supported at least 80% of the fish biomass production, and explained the dominance of pelagic species, but with differences resulting from the different productivity. The lower productivity in the oligotrophic Gulf of Lions led to a lower total biomass, energy density as well as the predominance of zooplankton-feeders. In contrast, fluxes in the Bay of Biscay were sufficient to support a higher biomass of pelagic piscivores, and of species with higher energy content. In the shallow Eastern English Channel, the respective contributions of pelagic and benthic sources were similar. Bentho-demersal species of higher trophic level dominated this assemblage, because of their ability to exploit both pathways. Results of the present study confirmed that fisheries-focused surveys can be used as efficient platforms to address questions about ecosystem functioning. Here, it confirmed the expected differences between ecosystems and the importance of primary production and environment as drivers of fish assemblage structure and functioning. Future studies should nevertheless develop new methods to better assess the paramount role of low trophic level consumers.

Physical habitat as predictor of fish trophic structure in Brazilian Atlantic rainforest streams

ABSTRACT Trophic structure of fish assemblages is one of the most sensitive indicators of changes in streams environments. Since it is crucial to understand the response of trophic groups to habitat alteration, our study aimed to address this research gap by assessing the influence of substrate composition, meso-habitat variability, and bank stability, on the richness, biomass, and number of individuals of carnivores, invertivores, omnivores, and herbivorous-detritivores. Using an electrofishing device, we sampled 13 Atlantic rainforest streams reaches in a degradation gradient, located in the upper Paranapanema river basin. Sample points were ranked using a physical habitat index. More pristine streams had high availability of twigs, trunks, rocks and boulders in the substrate, great meso-habitat variability, and the presence of roots, trunks, and rocks in the margins. Canonical correlations between habitat characteristics and trophic groups explained more than 90% of data variability. Richness and number of individuals of invertivores increased in more preserved stream reaches, while richness of carnivores and number of individuals of omnivores decreased. These results demonstrate that trophic structure varies according to level of degradation, and that invertivore richness represents the best indicator of fish trophic structure responses to physical habitat alterations in streams.

Comparison of trophic structure of fish assemblages in two tropical streams in Sri Lanka: A seasonal dry‐zone stream and a perennial wet‐zone stream

AbstractMost tropical rivers, especially in the Asian region, are severely impacted by various human perturbations and the diverse habitats in streams support rich invertebrate and vertebrate communities. It is hypothesized that the fish assemblages and their dietary structure in two tropical streams differ because they flow through different terrains and are exposed to different climatic conditions. In the wet‐zone stream, which is geomorphologically more complex, fish faunal diversity showed a significant variation and presence of endemic fish species. In the diets of fish, the taxonomic composition was different along the longitudinal gradients, but dietary taxa richness in the two streams was virtually similar having 32 dietary taxa in the wet‐zone stream and 36 taxa in the dry‐zone stream. In the wet‐zone stream, we observed a lower proportion of specialist feeding species than those in the dry‐zone stream. Trophic indices of individual species in fish assemblages ranging from herbivory to carnivory also indicate structuring of fish communities along the longitudinal gradients of the two streams based on the dietary structure. The main differences between the fish assemblages in the wet zone compared with the dry zone were the higher number of endemic species and the lower percentage of specialist feeders with higher trophic indices. The outcome of this study, hopefully, contributes to planning future biodiversity conservation management schemes under various river‐basin development strategies.

Diets and Trophic Structure of Fish Assemblages in a Large and Unexplored Subtropical River: The Uruguay River

The Neotropics represent a hotspot for freshwater biodiversity with vast number of fish species of scarce ecological knowledge. This hold true for the Uruguay River, where fish assemblages and their diets remain unexplored. Fish assemblages were surveyed in 14 sites along its main course, from headwaters to mouth (approximately 1800 km), with the aim to identify the trophic roles of fish and to describe trophic structure of these assemblages. Following standardized samplings, diet was determined to perform a trophic classification of species. One hundred species (2309 gut contents) were analysed and classified into four trophic groups subdivided into eight lower-level groups: Piscivore, piscivore-invertivore, detritivore, omnivore-detritivore, omnivore-invertivore, omnivore-planktivore and omnivore-herbivore. The trophic structure of the assemblages varied along the river, with the relative species richness of fish consuming terrestrial invertebrates increasing towards the middle river section, probably driven by the large floodplains in that areas, supporting global theories such as flood pulse concept. This study describes the feeding habits of fish along the Uruguay River, being the first dietary description for 29 species. This knowledge is essential for management and conservation, serving as baseline in the context of future environmental changes and generates novel evidence about the functioning of ecosystems in this scarcely studied climatic region.

Effect of environment on spatio-temporal structuring of fish assemblages in a monsoon-influenced tropical estuary.

This study analyzes the trophic structure of fish assemblages in a well-mixed tropical estuary, Zuari, located in southwest coast of India. A total of 224 fish species were collected between September 2013 and August 2016 from 324 sampling events from 9 sampling stations using surface and bottom set gillnets. The sampling events were designed to cover three major seasons such as the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon. For each sampling event, abiotic variables such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and transparency of the water were recorded. The data obtained for abundance of fish species was subjected to cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling. The results defined six spatio-temporally varying groups (clusters) within Zuari estuary. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and transparency were important in determining the fish assemblages in Zuari. The estuarine resident species were abundant in the inner zone (riverine side) of the estuary, where the salinity and temperature recorded lower dimensions compared to middle and outer zones (marine side). However, the inner shallow zone of the estuary was not a preferred habitat for the migrating marine species. Majority of the fish species preferred middle and outer zones and post-monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons for inhabiting the estuary. The present study furnishes a reference data for the spatio-temporal dynamics of fish assemblages in tropical monsoonal estuaries.

Trophic structure of fish assemblages varies across a Mesoamerican river network with contrasting climate and flow conditions

Assessments of trophic diversity are critical for evaluating ecological integrity of habitats, but interpretations of such assessments require an understanding of variation across natural environmental gradients. This can be problematic when comparing structure of assemblages in under-studied regions or habitats, such as watersheds in dry tropical forests. Here, we compared assemblage-wide trophic metrics and intraspecific variation for a subset of consumer traits across rivers and among different ecosystem types within the Grijalva and Usumacinta River basins of Mexico. The two rivers differ with respect to flow-regime alteration and climate: the Grijalva River has been hydrologically altered by a series of dams and has wet and dry tropical forests in its watershed, whereas the Usumacinta River remains unimpounded with a watershed dominated by tropical wet forest. Use of allochthonous resources was pervasive in Usumacinta basin tributaries, with stable isotope signatures suggesting that many fishes directly consumed riparian plants and detritus. In contrast, fish assemblages in Grijalva basin tributaries were supported by higher proportions of in-stream production. Food-chain length was highest in a Grijalva River reservoir fish assemblage, although trophic diversity was low in the impounded system compared to the mainstem Usumacinta River, where fishes consumed the broadest variety of food resources. We also observed differences in trophic ecology and body nutrient content within taxa across habitat types and basins. The differences we observed suggest that even in relatively intact watersheds, expectations for trophic structure in tropical streams should be adjusted based on factors such as discharge, climate, and riparian forest cover.

Diet and trophic structure of the fish assemblage in the mid-course of the Teles Pires River, Tapajós River basin, Brazil

ABSTRACT This study was carried out in a section of the middle course of the Teles Pires River, a clear water river that drains ancient and highly eroded geological formations, and where five hydropower plants are planned or in construction. In this study we tested the hypothesis that local fish fauna is mainly sustained by autochthonous food resources, with modest changes in the trophic structure of fish assemblages along the hydrometric cycle. Sampling was performed every three months between July 2008 and May 2009 at seven sites distributed along a 50-km section of the river. Piscivores was the most representative group in terms of biomass, abundance and species richness, followed by herbivores, insectivores and omnivores. The trophic structure did not change significantly during the hydrometric cycle, only omnivores showed significant temporal variation in abundance. The main food resources consumed by the ichthyofauna were of autochthonous origin, mainly immature aquatic insects and fish. Eight of 34 species showed temporal variations of the food resources consumed. Our results corroborate the hypothesis that the fish fauna of large, clear water rivers can be sustained by autochthonous resources. This contributes to understanding some determinants of fish production in large Neotropical rivers.

Changes of fish trophic guilds in Araruama Lagoon, Brazil: What can be inferred about functioning and structure of hypersaline lagoons?

In this paper, the diet and trophic structure of fish assemblages caught in two zones of the largest (∼220 km2) hypersaline coastal lagoon in South America were addressed quarterly along 2011, and the patterns were compared among seasons and to a previous study performed during typical hypersaline conditions (i.e. 1993) to assess the short- and long-term effects of desalinisation. Our results confirmed that in 2011, Araruama Lagoon experienced a strong decrease in salinity, particularly in the autumn, with the ranging values (i.e. 37–48) remaining below to the salinities (i.e. 52–67) reported for most of the 1965–2005 period, but matching those (i.e. ≤ 41 on the average) recorded during the atypical less-hypersaline conditions of 1989–1990. Fish trophic structure recorded during 2011 was composed of five guilds, in decreasing order of biomass: planktivores (31.14%), detritivores (26.24%), invertivores (25.65%), piscivores (15.09%), and omnivores (1.58%). This structure resembled more those of similar, but comparatively less hypersaline systems in Africa and Australia, than that of extreme hypersaline lagoons in Mexico or Araruama lagoon in a typically hypersaline year. Our findings indicate that increased contributions of planktivores and detritivores could be used as promising predictors of, respectively, salination and desalinisation processes and thus shifts in the ecosystem trophic state. Variations on the biomasses of piscivores and invertivores were apparently more related to short-term salinity changes among seasons and across the lagoon zones. Since the relationships between fish trophic structure and desalinisation and its associated effects were complex, long-term studies using complementary and integrative approaches, such as stable isotopes and functional traits, are recommended to confirm our findings for Araruama Lagoon and validate our hypothesis for other similar hypersaline ecosystems.

The Farther the Better: Effects of Multiple Environmental Variables on Reef Fish Assemblages along a Distance Gradient from River Influences.

The conservation and management of site-attached assemblages of coastal reefs are particularly challenging because of the tremendous environmental variation that exists at small spatial scales. In this sense, understanding the primary sources of variation in spatial patterns of the biota is fundamental for designing effective conservation policies. We investigated spatial variation in fish assemblages around the windward and leeward sides of coastal islands situated across a gradient of riverine influence (13 km in length). Specifically, relationships between rocky reef fish assemblages and benthic, topographic and physical predictors were assessed. We hypothesized that river induced disturbances may overcome local habitat features in modeling spatial patterns of fish distribution. Fish assemblages varied primarily due to the strong directional gradient of riverine influence (22.6% of the estimated components of variation), followed by topographic complexity (15%), wave exposure (9.9%), and benthic cover (8%). The trophic structure of fish assemblages changed from having a high abundance of invertebrate feeders in macroalgae-dominated reefs close to river mouths to a high proportion of herbivores, planktivores and invertebrate feeder species in reefs with large boulders covered by epilithic algal matrices, as the distance from rivers increased. This gradient led to an increase of 4.5-fold in fish richness and fish trophic group diversity, 11-fold in fish biomass and 10-fold in fish abundance. Our results have implications for the conservation and monitoring of assemblages patchily distributed at small spatial scales. The major role of distance from river influences on fish assemblages rather than benthic cover and topographic complexity suggest that managing land-based activities should be a conservation priority toward reef restoration.

<b>Trophic structure of fish assemblages associated with macrophytes in lakes of an abandoned meander on the middle river Purus, brazilian Amazon

The trophic structure of fish assemblages associated with banks of aquatic macrophytes in abandoned meander lakes on the river Purus is investigated. Comparisons between lakes and between different periods of the hydrological cycle are undertaken. Fish samples were collected in six lakes during the rainy (February), ebb (May) and dry (September) season in 2012. Fish stomach contents were analyzed by frequency of occurrence and volume methods, combined in the Feeding Index (IAi). Fish species were included in nine trophic categories, based on IAi rates. The richness and abundance of fish species, by trophic category, was influenced by temporal variations, with no significant spatial variation. Some species changed their diets and were included in different trophic categories according to the period and lake under analysis. Specialist species have also been identified, but failed to change their diets. Differences may be due to the characteristics of macrophytes banks and to the flooding regime which change the availability of food resources.

Three decades of recurrent declines and recoveries in corals belie ongoing change in fish assemblages

Coral reefs are increasingly being altered by a myriad of anthropogenic activities and natural disturbances. Long-term studies offer unique opportunities to understand how multiple and recurrent disturbances can influence coral reef resilience and long-term dynamics. While the long-term dynamics of coral assemblages have been extensively documented, the long-term dynamics of coral reef fish assemblages have received less attention. Here, we describe the changes in fish assemblages on Tiahura reef, Moorea, from 1979 to 2011. During this 33-yr period, Tiahura was exposed to multiple disturbances (crown-of-thorns seastar outbreaks and cyclones) that caused recurrent declines and recoveries of coral cover and changes in the dominant coral genera. These shifts in coral composition were associated with long-term cascading effects on fish assemblages. The composition and trophic structure of fish assemblages continuously shifted without returning to their initial composition, whereas fish species richness remained stable, albeit with a small increase over time. We detected nonlinear responses of fish density when corals were most degraded. When coral cover dropped below 10 % following a severe crown-of-thorns sea star outbreak, the density of most fish trophic groups sharply decreased. Our study shows that historical contingency may potentially be an important but largely underestimated factor explaining the contemporary structure of reef fish assemblages and suggests that temporal stability in their structure and function should not necessarily be the target of management strategies that aim at increasing or maintaining coral reef resilience.

Potential drivers of seasonal shifts in fish omnivory in a subtropical stream

The trophic structure of fish assemblages often varies seasonally, following the changes in food availability and supposedly water temperature. To unveil potential drivers of trophic shifts, we studied changes in fish trophic structure at both whole-assemblage and species levels at contrasting food availability and water temperatures in a subtropical stream. We analysed the diet of the most abundant omnivorous species (Bryconamericus iheringii) monthly along the year, searching for relationships with environmental variables changing seasonally (i.e. temperature and water level) and with fish reproductive stage. We ran a single-species food choice field experiment with fixed animal and vegetal food availability in contrasting seasons to test food availability as driver of diet shifts. At the assemblage level, we found a higher consumption of vegetal during summer, reflecting the increased proportion of vegetal in the diet of omnivores, which dominated the assemblage. At the species level, the enhanced vegetal consumption was related to increases in temperature and reduction in water level. Moreover, fish selected for vegetal during summer and for animal food in winter under experimental conditions. Our findings support the role of temperature driving food web dynamics by increasing fish herbivory towards warmer scenarios, with potential strong implications for whole-assemblage trophic structure.

Effect of a marine protected area on tropical estuarine fish assemblages: Comparison between protected and unprotected sites in Senegal

A comparative study of fish assemblages of a marine protected area and an exploited area was carried out in the Sine Saloum estuary (Senegal, West Africa). Data were collected at these two sites between 2008 and 2011. The two areas are morphologically similar, and comparison of the physicochemical parameters (salinity, transparency, temperature and percentage of saturation of dissolved oxygen) showed that the water masses are similar. The bio-ecological indicators and ecological, trophic and size structures were also compared. Given the environmental similarity of the two sites, their differences in bio-ecological characteristics and fish assemblage organization can be explained by the protection status of the MPA. The species richness and fish abundance per sampling unit were higher in the exploited site, but the mean trophic level and the observed maximum size of individuals were higher in the MPA. Although slightly higher for the MPA, the differences observed for biomass and average size between the two sites were not significant. The beta diversity in the MPA was higher than in the exploited site. The fish assemblage was dominated in terms of abundance by two pelagic herbivores Ethmalosa fimbriata (80%) and Sardinella maderensis (12.3%) and in terms of biomass by E. fimbriata (37.4%) and a benthic predator, Arius latiscutatus (23.7%). The assemblage of the MPA had a marine affinity characterized by the presence of piscivorous or generalist predators; large individuals were not uncommon. In the exploited site, the fish assemblage was relatively stable, dominated in abundance by E. fimbriata (33.4%) and S. maderensis (32.8%). In terms of biomass, a species of mullet, Liza dumerili, ranked first (26.2%), followed by E. fimbriata (22.4%) and S. maderensis (14.9%). The assemblage in the exploited site had a more estuarine affinity, dominated by detritivorous or phytophagous herbivores. Individuals observed there were mostly of small or medium size. This study confirms that the establishment of MPA is an effective tool for restoring marine biodiversity and trophic structure of fish assemblages.
