Rock Phosphate and Biochar Effects on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Soil Fertility in Southern Alberta Potato Field

The application of biochar soil amendment and rock phosphate fertilizer to the soil could lead to achieving net zero emissions and food security; however, the effectiveness of using biochar and rock phosphate in southern Alberta brown chernozemic soil is not yet assessed. In the first trial of this study, varying levels of urea (N), with varying levels of biochar (B) were applied. The same level of rock phosphate (RP) and triple super phosphate (TSP) were applied to compare efficiency of the two fertilizers. The second trial involved applying the same nutrients, but with higher levels than the first trial. The results indicated that the fertilizer application rates did not affect the growth and yield of potatoes because of the application rates of the fertilizer and fertility status of the soil, whereas in the second trial, TSP and RP treatments had the same growth and yield. Furthermore, the high application rate of nitrogen fertilizer and RP with or without biochar in the potato plot emitted high nitrous oxide gas emissions while the low application rate of nitrogen fertilizer and RP kept the carbon dioxide in the soil. Nevertheless, in the second experiment, the application of biochar and rock phosphate reduced nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide emissions. We observed high residual nitrogen and manganese nutrients after harvest in the plot treated to rock phosphate and biochar. Therefore, rock phosphate and biochar have the potential to increase food production and mitigate climate change.

Lignin-rich extracts as slow-release coating for phosphorus fertilizers

Lignin (L) is the most abundant three-dimensional polymer with versatile yet attractive structural features and chemical properties for applicability as a coating. The properties of lignin are mainly related to its botanical origin, structure and extraction method. Although there has been a lot of interest in using lignin in fertilizing systems, only limited attempts have been dedicated to studying the effect of the lignin structure and origin on the release of P fertilizer. Thus, the aim of this work was to study the effect of lignin polymers, extracted from different plant biomass, as coating materials for P fertilizers. Thus, the effect of the structural features originating from the botanical origin on the properties of coated fertilizers and their slow release were established. To this end, three lignocellulosic biomass, namely olive pomace (OP), barley straw (BS) and wood shavings (WS) were used as feedstock to extract lignin polymers. Those chemical compositions and thermochemical properties were characterized prior to their application as coating for triple super phosphate (TSP) fertilizer. Coated fertilizers were characterized for their morphology and coating thickness prior to their evaluation as slow release P-based fertilizer. A distinct slow P release behavior was reported for lignin-coated fertilizers with TSP@L-OP being the slowest as compared to TSP@L-WS, TSP@L-BS as well as pristine TSP, which confirm that the botanical origin and most likely the chemical structures of lignin has significant impact on the properties of the coating materiel. A 100 % release of P from the uncoated TSP was observed after 3 days, while the released amount ranged from only 16.9 % for TSP@L-OP up to 33.4 % for TSP@L-BS. The impact of these coated fertilizers on nutrients uptake and wheat growth was also scrutinized and an noticeable improvement of wheat shoot biomass was observed with the coated TSP treatments reaching up 57.8 % for TSP@BS, 78.1 % for TSP @WS and 93.7 % for TSP @OP, compared to uncoated TSP. This was concomitant to a slight increase of P concentration in shoots, roots and rhizosphere soil, which confirmed the positive effect of slow release P fertilizers on plant growth.

Unexpectedly, triple super phosphate fertilizer induces maize drought resilience

Phosphorus fertilizer is commonly applied to soils in crop production as diammonium phosphate (DAP). To decrease ammonium addition to the environment, triple super phosphate (TSP) is being considered as a DAP replacement. This study was undertaken to compare the response of maize plants to soil fertilization with TSP vs. DAP under well-watered conditions, under soil-drying conditions, and root hydraulic conductance. It was found for well-watered conditions in a controlled environment that there was no difference in plant growth between DAP to TSP treatments. In soil dry-down experiments, however, the initiation of the decrease in transpiration rate was unexpectedly quite different between DAP and TSP treatments. The soil water content threshold for initiation of decrease in transpiration rate with DAP treatment (average fraction transpirable soil water for two experiments = 0.285) was consistent with common observations, but the threshold associated with TSP treatment occurred at an unusually high soil water content (average fraction transpirable soil water for two experiments = 0.545). The higher threshold with TSP resulted in an extended period of soil water use, i.e. soil water conservation. Soil water conservation resulting from the TSP treatment was associated with a 27% greater shoot mass accumulation following a 4-wk re-watering period after the water-deficit treatment than measured with the DAP treatment. The high threshold for decrease in transpiration resulting from TSP was consistent with measured lower root hydraulic conductance as compared to DAP treatment. The unexpected discovery of TSP-induced initiation of transpiration rate decrease at high soil water content is consistent with greater crop drought resilience.

Mitigating effect of various phosphorus sources on arsenic toxicity in anaerobic conditions for rice and aerobic conditions for sunflower and maize plants

Arsenic (As) contamination is one of the major factors that contribute to environmental pollution and it plays havoc with sustainability of crop production. Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) can be an effective phosphorus (P) source to cope with As toxicity. The mitigating effects of variable P sources on As toxicity in rice, sunflower and maize grown in alkaline soil were evaluated. Arsenic was applied at 0 and 20 mg kg-1 and P was applied at 0, 50 and 500 mg kg-1 in the form of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and nHAP. In addition, the same amount of phosphoric acid (PA) was also used in sunflower and maize experiments with the other P sources. The structural and functional properties of nHAP were determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX). Stunted growth was observed in rice, and less in sunflower; maize remained unaffected by As toxicity. In the presence of As, a high dose of TSP (TSP500) and nHAP (nHAP500) significantly increased dry weights of rice plants compared with control plants. Arsenic concentrations in rice were decreased by about 25% in the presence of 50 mg kg-1 TSP (TSP50) and nHAP500 treatments. Phosphorus treatments had no significant effect on the As concentrations of sunflower, while in maize plants As levels increased with TSP500 treatment as compared with P0As0. In the absence of As, TSP500 and nHAP500 treatments significantly increased rice P concentration (2.80 and 2.27 g kg-1) whereas, in the presence of As, TSP500 significantly increased P concentration in rice plants as compared with P0. Arsenic had no significant effect on sunflower P concentration while the maize P concentration was decreased in the P0 treatment. It can be concluded that TSP and nHAP were effective in alleviating As toxicity in rice and sunflower. Comparative studies are further needed to determine the long-term effects of TSP and nHAP on prevention of As toxicity in field conditions.

Nitrous oxide emissions after struvite application in relation to soil P status

PurposeAlthough struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) is mostly considered to be a novel phosphorus (P) fertiliser, it does contain a significant amount of nitrogen (N). Yet, relatively little is known about the soil N dynamics in struvite-amended soils. Here, we focus on how struvite application impacts emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), in relation to soil P status.MethodsWe conducted a 54-day greenhouse pot experiment on two similar soils with different P status (“low-P soil”; “high-P soil”) seeded with Lolium perenne L. We applied seven fertiliser treatments (Control; Struvite granules; Struvite powder; Urea; Triple superphosphate (TSP); TSP + Struvite granule; TSP + Urea). Except for the unfertilised Control and the TSP treatments, N application rate was 150 kg N‧ha−1. Nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, aboveground yield, plant N and P uptake and readily plant-available soil N and P contents were measured.ResultsIn the low-P soil, none of the fertiliser treatments induced a significant increase in N2O emission compared to the control. In the high-P soil, struvite application resulted in lower emissions than urea application, statistically not different from the control treatment. Struvite powder significantly increased both plant N and P uptake compared to granular struvite and the resulting yield was similar to conventional fertilisation (TSP and Urea). Any struvite application also resulted in lower readily plant-available soil nitrate contents than urea.ConclusionOur results suggest that struvite fertilisation can reduce the risk of gaseous N losses without compromising agronomic performance. Pulverizing struvite granules further promotes its dissolution, which could be useful for crops with early nutrient needs.

Combined application of controlled‐release phosphate and triple superphosphate improved cotton yield and phosphorus supply in saline‐alkali land: A short‐term trial

AbstractDegradation of agricultural productivity in sodic and saline soils is attributed to reducing phosphorus (P) supply capacity. The available P supply intensity and crop yields could be enhanced by artificial P fertilizer application. The effects of blending 70% controlled‐release phosphorus (CRP) and 30% triple superphosphate (TSP) on cotton physiological‐biochemical properties in sodic and saline soils were investigated by a pot incubation trial. A pot experiment was used two types of P fertilizers and three P levels (120, 96 and 72 kg P2O5 ha−1). The results showed that the SPAD value and photosynthetic rate of BBF (blending 70% CRP and 30% TSP) treatments were higher than that of TSP treatments. The root length, root surface area, and root volume of the BBF treatments increased by 10.04% and 5.31%, 3.67% and 6.80%, 3.05% and 13.77% compared to TSP treatments, respectively. In comparison with TSP1 (full‐dose of TSP) and TSP2 (to reduce 20% dose of TSP), the average lint yield of BBF1 (full‐dose of BBF) and BBF2 (to reduce 20% dose of BBF) were significantly increased by 8.35%, 7.39%, respectively. The phosphorus use efficiency of BBF2 treatment was increased by 16.59%–22.87% compared with TSP2 treatment, with the largest increase range. Furthermore, soil available P content of BBF treatments increased by 4.65%–76.77% compared with TSP treatments from the blooming to maturity stage. In a word, with P fertilization rate reduced by 20%, the combination of two P fertilizers (BBF2 treatment) can achieve high quality and high yield of cotton in sodic and saline soil.

Experimental dissolution of biopolymer-coated phosphorus fertilizers applied to a soil surface: Impact on soil pH and P dynamics

Biopolymer-coated phosphorus fertilizers have shown promising results in slowing the release of P. However, their dissolution behaviour has been studied mainly in water, and their impacts on soil properties have rarely been addressed. The aim of this study was to compare the dissolution of P from uncoated triple superphosphate (TSP) and biopolymer-coated TSP fertilizers at the surface of cropped Mediterranean soils and to evaluate their impacts on the soil pH and the distributions of several P pools. The experimental treatments were: no fertilizer, uncoated TSP, TSP coated with lignin and TSP coated with lignin and carrageenan. The spatial and temporal variations in the pH of the fertilized soils were investigated using optodes. The concentrations of different pools of P (available P, microbial P), and total P as well as P recovery at different distances from the granules were determined. The coated TSP acidified the soil to a radius of 14 mm around each fertilizer granule, while the acidification spread to 21 mm in the treatment with the uncoated TSP. Moreover, an increase in microbial P was observed in the soil treated with coated TSP, possibly due to the carbon input and the consequent increase in microbial biomass. However, slower P-release was observed from the coated TSP due to the effect of the coating barrier. The P recovery results showed P migration within a 21 mm radius from each granule, and the P recovery from the TSP coated with lignin alone was significantly greater than that from the uncoated TSP treatment.

Recycling-derived Phosphorus Fertilizers as a Sustainable Alternative to Triple Superphosphate Fertilizers

Microbial activity is adamant for the nutrient cycling in soil. Generally, mineral phosphorus (P) fertilizer is applied to soil to improve plant growth, however, significant amounts are immobilized quickly. Mineral fertilizer can cause soil degradation, affecting the microbial community. Alternative, recycling-derived fertilizers (RDFs) need to be evaluated as suitable replacement for finite mineral P fertilizer. The impact of four RDFs (two ashes, two struvites) on the soil microbiome in comparison with a P-free control and triple superphosphate (TSP) as mineral fertilizer was investigated in a pot trial and a subsequent microcosm trial (subset of samples). For both experiments, perennial ryegrass was cultivated for 54 days. The pot trial was conducted at P fertilization rates of 20 and 60 kg P ha-1 in quadruplicates. After the pot harvest, the bulk soil was stored until the microcosm trial was conducted, using the control, TSP and the two ashes at 60 kg P ha-1 in six replicates. Struvites displayed highest P bioavailability at high P application rates in the pot trial, yielding higher biomass on average. Furthermore, P solubilization from tri-calcium phosphate was enhanced in the RDFs treatments, while the TSP treatments were negatively affected. For the microcosm trial, most probable number (MPN) analysis showed that phytate-utilizing bacterial abundance was significantly increased in one of the ashes. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis of phoD illumina sequencing data showed significant separation between all treatments of the microcosm trial. Understanding the impact of RDF application on the soil P cycle is vital to sustainable agriculture.

Effects of chemical- and bio-fertilizers on cowpea resistance to cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a destructive pest of cowpea grains in the field and storage. Effects of two chemical fertilizers (triple superphosphate (TSP) and urea) and three bio-fertilizers (Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Pseudomonas putida and mycorrhizal fungi) compared to control were studied on resistance of cowpea pod and grain to C. maculatus. Pod resistance was evaluated as oviposition preference, egg-to-adult survival and developmental time, and grain resistance was measured as life history and life table parameters of the pest. Cowpea plants treated with tested fertilizers were grown under field condition. Then, the full-size green pods and their immature grains were harvested and used in the experiments. The highest oviposition preference and percentage of adults emergence were on control (untreated) pods as compared to treated ones. The longest developmental times were recorded on the pods obtained from TSP and B. japonicum treatments. In most cases, significant differences were observed for the life history and life table parameters of C. maculatus on the grains treated with examined fertilizers. Delayed developmental time was recorded when C. maculatus was fed with P. putida- and B. japonicum-treated grains. The highest and lowest number of eggs laid by each female (fecundity) was on the grains obtained from TSP and control treatments, respectively. The net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm) and finite rate of increase (λ) were the lowest on cowpea grains fertilized with B. japonicum and highest on the grains treated with urea. Our results showed that B. japonicum can be suggested to utilize, as an alternative for chemical fertilizers, to minimize cowpea infestation by C. maculatus. These findings could be helpful in developing integrated management of the pest on cowpea.

Valorization of calcium phosphite waste as phosphorus fertilizer: Effects on green manure productivity and soil properties

The potential to use calcium phosphite (Ca-Phi) as phosphorus (P) fertilizer may represent an effective recycling of P-containing by-products. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of Ca-Phi (38 kg P ha−1) on soil properties and the growth parameters of four green manure species in clay and sandy soils using Ca-Phi, TSP (triple superphosphate) and control (no fertilization) as treatments. Eight weeks after sowing, we measured aboveground biomass yield, phosphite (Phi) concentration in plant biomass, different soil P pools as well as microbial biomass nutrients. Compared to control, the addition of Ca-Phi did not negatively affect green manure yield, except for lupine (Lupinus albus L.) in clay soil. The Phi concentration in plant biomass varied across species and soil type with a maximum concentration of about 400 mg Phi kg−1 for mustard (Brassica juncea L.) in clay soil. Compared to control, TSP and Ca-Phi fertilization had a similar effect on different P pools and microbial biomass nutrients (C, N and P) although the response was soil–type dependent. In the sandy soil, after Ca-Phi addition the amount of available P (PNHCO3) increased to the same extent as in the TSP treatment (i.e. around 6 mg P kg−1) suggesting that Ca-Phi was, at least partly, oxidized. In the clay soil with high P fixing capacity, Ca-Phi promoted higher PNaHCO3 than TSP likely due to different solubility of chemical P forms. Additional studies are however required to better understand soil microbial responses and to quantify the P agronomical efficiency for the following crop under Ca-Phi fertilization.

Electrochemically precipitated struvite effects on extractable nutrients compared with other fertilizer‐phosphorus sources

AbstractRecovery of struvite, or magnesium ammonium phosphate (MgNH4PO4 · 6H2O), from wastewater streams may provide an alternative to traditional P fertilizers. Little research has assessed the behavior of struvite relative to other commercially available, fertilizer‐P sources in historically row‐cropped soils in the United States. The objective of this study was to evaluate total extractable P and other nutrients from electrochemically (ECST) and chemically precipitated struvite (CPST) compared with triple superphosphate (TSP), diammonium phosphate (DAP), monoammonium phosphate (MAP), and rock phosphate (RP) in a moist‐soil incubation without plants using varying soil textures (loam, silt loam, and silty clay loam). A uniform application rate of 24.5 kg total P ha–1 was used for each fertilizer‐P source. Soil sampling occurred six times over a 9‐mo period (0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9 mo) to examine the change in soil pH and water‐soluble (WS) and Mehlich‐3‐extractable nutrient concentrations (P, Ca, Mg, and Fe) from their initial levels over time. After 0.5 mo, WS‐P concentrations increased the most in the ECST treatment (41.6 mg kg–1), which did not differ from that of DAP. Throughout the remaining 8.5 mo of incubation, WS‐P concentrations generally decreased in most treatments but were still greater than the initial level by 9 mo and were often similar among ECST, CPST, MAP, DAP, and TSP treatments. Comparable WS‐P concentrations among ECST and MAP, DAP, and TSP under soil conditions near field capacity (∼0.2 g g–1) support struvite's potential as a sustainable fertilizer‐P source, thus warranting further investigation of the plant response to struvite use as an alternative fertilizer‐P source.

Lead, Zinc and Cadmium Accumulation, and Associated Health Risks, in Maize Grown near the Kabwe Mine in Zambia in Response to Organic and Inorganic Soil Amendments.

Health risks due to heavy metal (HM) contamination is of global concern. Despite concerns of high levels of HMs in soils near Kabwe mine in Zambia, edible crop production is common, posing potential health risks. This study assessed the potential of chicken manure (CM), triple superphosphate (TSP) and a blended fertilizer (BF; consisting of Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (NPK) fertilizer and composted chicken manure) to reduce lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in soils and their accumulation in maize grown near the Kabwe mine. Maize was grown to maturity and its HM concentrations and associated health risk indices were calculated. All soil amendments decreased bioavailable soil Pb concentrations by 29–36%, but only CM decreased Zn, while the amendments increased or had no effect on Cd concentrations compared to the control. The amendments reduced Pb (>25%) and Zn concentrations (>18%) in the maize stover and grain. However, Cd concentrations in maize grain increased in the BF and TSP treatments. Bioaccumulation factors showed that Cd had the highest mobility from the soil into maize stover and grain, indicating the need for greater attention on Cd in Kabwe despite its apparently lower soil concentration compared to Pb and Zn. The hazard quotients for Pb and Cd were much greater than one, indicating a high risk of possible exposure to toxic levels by people consuming maize grain grown in this area. This study demonstrated the significant potential of manure and phosphate-based amendments to reduce Pb and Zn, and to some extent Cd, uptake in maize grain and consequently reduce associated health risks.

Recycling-derived fertilizers (RDFs) have been developed for nutrient recovery from Europe’s largest waste streams as a sustainable alternative to this finite resource. The impact of four RDFs (two ashes, two struvites) on the soil microbiome in comparison with a P-free control and triple super phosphate (TSP) as mineral fertilizer was investigated in a pot trial and a subsequent microcosm trial (subset of samples). Farmyard manure improves phosphorus use efficiency in weathered P deficient soil

Crop production is limited by low soil fertility in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), particularly by P deficiency due to strong fixation by Fe and Al oxyhydroxides. Organic amendments are known to increase P availability in fertilizer and in such soils by different mechanisms. This study investigated the effect of adding farmyard manure (FYM) versus mineral triple super phosphate (TSP) fertilizer on P availability in different cropping systems. Field experiments were conducted in three succeeding summer seasons to compare two different upland cropping systems: a Bambara (Vigna subterranea)–rice rotation and a rice–rice system on a highly P deficient Ferralsol. Nine treatments including sole TSP at 0, 10, 20, 30 kg P ha−1 year−1, and sole FYM at 0, 10, 20, 30 kg P ha−1 year−1 (i.e. 100% FYM substitution), and combined FYM and TSP (FYM + TSP) at 20, 30 kg P ha−1 year−1 (i.e. 50% and 67% FYM substitution, respectively) were applied. Results showed that FYM treatments increased Bambara and rice grain yields compared to TSP treatment alone particularly in year three. Phosphorus uptake efficiency was higher in FYM treatments combined or not with TSP in year three of the experiment. The notable response to FYM was associated with increased agronomic efficiency resulting from additional C originating from the FYM with a low initial soil C content, (around 2%), and the effect of liming that reduced soil P sorption thereby improving P availability from FYM. Partial (67%) substitution of TSP by FYM increased grain yields of Bambara by 1.67 Mg ha−1 and of rice by 1.01 Mg ha−1 compared to TSP alone in year three at the highest P rate (30 kg P ha−1). The effect of FYM could be linked to inputs of C and nutrients from added FYM and to the indirect effect on soil physico–chemical properties including soil pH, soil moisture, soil biological activity, low P capacity sorption. This study confirms that application of FYM can help minimize rates of TSP applied in smallholder farms in SSA.

The quantity/intensity relation is affected by chemical and organic P fertilization in calcareous soils

The use of organic fertilization increases the availability of phosphorus (P) in calcareous soils by affecting the colloidal properties of soils. Accordingly, it was hypothesized that chemical and organic fertilizers affect P availability in calcareous soils by influencing P sorption and buffering capacity. The objective was to investigate the quantity/intensity (Q/I) relation in calcareous soils as affected by chemical and organic P fertilization. Three different soil types with different Olsen-P values including Qazvin1 (very low P, VLP), Qazvin2 (low P, LP) and Dizan (medium P, MP) were fertilized with 50 mg P kg−1 soil using triple superphosphate (TSP), sheep manure (SM), and municipal solid waste compost (MSWC). The treated experimental soils were incubated for 90 days, and P sorption and buffering capacity indexes were determined using calcium chloride solutions in a range of 0–100 mg P L−1. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) response to the experimental treatments. Wheat P content at tillering (60 days after planting) was determined. The SM and TSP treatments were the most efficient sources of P for plant use in the greenhouse, as they resulted in the highest wheat growth and P content. The incubation data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and surface sorption isotherm models. Langmuir model, as the best fitted one, indicated the highest P sorption (A) was resulted by the SM treatment for VLP and LP soils, compared to the other treatments. According to the model, the SM and MSWC treatments resulted in the least (0.04) and the highest (1.11) sorption energy (K) by the VLP soil, respectively. In the VLP soil the SM and MSWC treatments, and in the LP soil the MSWC treatment decreased P sorption, at the final concentration of P (100 mg L−1), compared to the control treatment. Organic fertilizers decreased buffering index, phosphorous buffering capacity, and K1 indexes in the VLP soil, compared to the control treatment. The corresponding reductions for SM were equal to 35.99, 2.7, 1.19 mL P g−1 and for MSWC were equal to 12.33, 36.2 and 1.19 mL P g−1. In the VLP and MP soils, (compared with control), the SM treatment decreased the rates of maximum buffering capacity at 0.38 and 0.52 mL P g−1, respectively. There were high and significant correlations among the soil P buffering indexes with soil and wheat P content. Fertilization affected soil P availability by affecting the Q/I relation and the buffering capacity indexes. It is possible to predict plant response to available P using the tested fitting models.

Effect of PGPR, Phosphate sources and vermicompost on growth and nutrients uptake by lettuce in a calcareous soil

ABSTRACTIn order to study the effect of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), vermicompost and phosphate sources on the growth and nutrients uptake by lettuce, a greenhouse experiments was conducted. Treatments consisted of PGPR (Pseudomonas fluorescens) (with and without inoculation), vermicompost (0 and 1% w/w) and phosphate sources (control, rock phosphate (RP), tricalcium phosphate and triple super phosphate (TSP) at 25 mg P kg−1 level). Biological fertilizers, RP and TSP significantly increased shoot dry matter (SDM) and some measured nutrients uptake. Co-application of PGPR and RP, in non-vermicompost treatments significantly increased SDM, shoot nitrogen, phosphorus (P), potassium, zinc and manganese uptake rates. Shoot P uptake had no significant difference between TSP and RP treatments. Co-application of PGPR, vermicompost and TSP significantly decreased SDM, which may be due to the P toxic levels in the plant aerial parts and/or the inhibition of the bacterial activities in the rhizosphere soil.

Drivers of Plant-Availability of Phosphorus from Thermally Conditioned Sewage Sludge as Assessed by Isotopic Labeling.

Urban sewage sludge is a potential source of phosphorus (P) for agriculture and represents an alternative way to recycle P as fertilizer. However, the use of thermally conditioned sewage sludge (TCSS) required an accurate assessment of its value as P-fertilizer. This work aimed at assessing the plant-availability of P from TCSS. Uptake of P by a mixture of ryegrass and fescue from TCSS and triple super phosphate (TSP) fertilizers was studied using 32P-labeling technique in a greenhouse experiment. Phosphorus was applied at the rate of 50 mg P kg−1.We also conducted incubation experiments considering the same treatments to assess soil microbial respiration. Applications of TCSS and TSP increased plant P uptake that is related to the root P acquisition. The P taken up by plant from soil plant-available P was lower for control compared to TSP or TCSS that was attributed to the increase of root interception of soil P. The contribution of TSP to ryegrass nutrition (Pdff%) was 55% with 22% of the applied P which was taken up by plants (CPU%). The Pdff value for TCSS was 56% with 14% of fertilizer P recovery (CPU%). Shoot biomass and total P uptake from TCSS were lower than those from TSP. As a result, the agronomic effectiveness of TCSS calculated from Pdff value (in comparison with TSP treatment) was 102%, while the AE of TCSS estimated from CPU value (in % TSP) was 64%, which is attributed to microbial activity stimulation inducing P immobilization onto soil constituents and microbial biomass during plant growth. The high C/N ratio of TCSS stimulated soil microbial biomass that competes with plant roots to acquire nutrients, such as P. As a consequence, the P taken up from either native soil or TCSS decreased in similar proportions. The AE value calculated with Pdff% took into account these interactions between soil, plant, and microbial biomass, and is less dependent on operational conditions than the AE value calculated with %Precovery.

Long-Term Effects of Phosphorus on Dynamics of an Overseeded Natural Grassland in Brazil

Fertilization can affect vegetation dynamics and natural grassland diversity. This study evaluated the vegetation dynamics of a natural grassland 16 years after the initial fertilization, discussing the long-term effects of addition of triple superphosphate (TP) or Gafsa rock phosphate (RP) sources, as well as the effect of exotic species introduction on the inter seasonal dynamic of floristic composition. Phosphate (P) was applied in 1997, 1998, 2002, 2010, and 2012 at the quantities of 78.6, 39.3, 43.7, 43.7 and 43.7 kg∙ha-1, respectively, totaling 249 kg∙ha-1 P. Total herbage mass production (THM) with RP (13 485 kg∙ha-1) and TP applications (14 668 kg∙ha-1) was higher than in the Control (11 291 kg∙ha-1). There was a higher warm tussock perennial grasses C4 contribution on herbage mass (HM) during the summer season (1 106 kg∙ha-1), whereas it was similar between treatments. In summer, the warm-season prostrate perennial grasses C4 group contribution for HM was on average 48% higher when RP was used (1 590 kg∙ha-1) in relation to the other treatments. The HM contribution from the cool season annual grasses C3 group (CAG) in the total HM, over spring 2012, winter and spring 2013 in TP treatment, was 17% higher than the other treatments. The changes in the seasonal botanical composition dynamics mainly by inducing modifications in the proportion of Paspalum notatum A. H. Liogier ex Flüggé on RP treatment and Paspalum urvillei Steud. and Lolium multiflorum Lam. on TP treatment. However, no significant effects were observed in species richness, which ranged from 19–24 species among growth seasons. In the same way, the Shannon Diversity Index and Pielou Equitability Index were not modified by historical P sources. These results indicate that phosphorus fertilization has lower effects on natural grasslands diversity and could be used as a tool with important implications for livestock.

Organic and Inorganic P Sources Interacting with Applied Rhizosphere Bacteria and Their Effects on Growth and P Supply of Maize

Plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) may enhance the plant availability of phosphorus (P) in soil. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted cultivating maize (Zea mays L.) on a P-deficient soil. Three bacterial treatments (control without PGPR and application of either Enterobacter radicincitans sp. nov. strain DSM 16656 or Pseudomonas fluorescens strain DR54) were tested in conjunction with three P treatments [no P addition, inorganic P as triplesuperphosphate (TSP), and organic P as phytin] at two different growth stages of maize (V6 and V9). Amendment with TSP enhanced growth, P uptake, and highly bioavailable P pools in soil to a greater extent than phytin. In contrast, arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) formation of maize roots after phytin application doubled those for the TSP treatment or the control without P. Application of PGPR was also able to increase AM formation and P uptake of maize, especially when no P source was added. Furthermore, P. fluorescens inoculation resulted in an increase of highly soluble soil P pools at the early growth stage. Greater impacts of phytin on P nutrition of maize may exist in a longer term as a result of slow P release and promotion of AM fungi. Benefits to maize P nutrition derived from PGPR application can be expected under P deficiency.

Bone char as phosphorus fertilizer involved in cadmium immobilization in lettuce, wheat, and potato cropping

AbstractBone char is a potential clean and renewable P fertilizer with Cd‐immobilization capabilities, but the P–Cd interactions in cropping of vegetable, grain, and tuber crops are unknown. In the present pot experiment bone char was evaluated on its effect on the growth and P supply of various crops (lettuce, wheat, potatoes) as well as its capability to reduce the uptake of Cd from a moderately Cd‐contaminated and P‐deficient soil (soil 1) and a highly Cd‐contaminated soil with sufficient P supply (soil 2). When averaging the dry‐matter yield over the treatments for each crop for the P‐sufficient soil 1, the following order was obtained: triple superphosphate (TSP) > diammonium phosphate (DAP) > BC, whereas for the soil 2 with sufficient P supply it was inverted with BC > DAP > TSP. The P‐deficiency resulted in a more pronounced effect of TSP and DAP on the plant growth, whereas P sufficiency in the soil promoted a crop‐quality‐enhancing effect of bone char. The Cd concentration in the consumption‐relevant plant parts was mostly insignificantly affected by treatments; however, the total Cd concentration in the whole plants tended to decrease with fertilizer addition for all crops in soil 1 even at very low bone‐char application levels. Similar results were obtained for soil 2 with an exception for the Cd concentration in potatoes, as the total Cd concentration was significantly increased in the TSP and DAP treatments. This most likely results from the introduction of Cd with TSP and DAP as they contained ≈ 27–28 mg Cd kg–1. Thus, this study demonstrated the potential of bone char as a clean P fertilizer, which can efficiently decrease the Cd contamination of potato on contaminated soils.
