Computed tomography revealed that bone density in lambs was affected by Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection

In this study we aimed to analyze computed tomography images of bony density in lambs submitted to infection induced by Trichostrongylus colubriformis. The lambs were randomly assigned to two experimental treatments: infected group (I) (n = 9) and control group (C) (n = 9). The lambs of group I were orally infected with 5000 T. colubriformis infective larvae (L3), three times per week during three weeks, totaling 45,000 L3. On the other hand, the lambs of group C remained uninfected. Each lamb was scanned 2x, the first scanning before the initial infection and the 2nd in the final of experimental period, with an interval of 90 days between measurements. For the analyses, the regions of the 4th and 12th ribs and thigh (femur) were selected, on the right side of the animal. The results showed that T. colubriformis infection reduced the bone density of growing lambs in the 4th rib (P = 0.0005), 12th rib region (P = <0.0001) and femur (P = 0.0063). Also, infected lambs had their bone density (4th rib, 12th rib and femur) reduced over time. We concluded that bone density in lambs was affected by Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection.

The effect of Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriforms infection on the ruminal microbiome of lambs

We evaluated Haemonchus contortus (HC) and Trichostrongylus colubriformis (TC) infection on the ruminal microbial community of Santa Ines lambs to better understand the pathophysiology of parasite infections and the interactions among gastrointestinal nematodes and gut resident microbiota. In this study, 18 six months of age lambs were maintained for 34 days in individual pens divided into three treatments that included animals infected with HC and TC, and control (infection-free). Haematological, ruminal parameter and microbial nitrogen absorbed by pune derivatives, as well as enteric methane emission (CH4), were analysed, and the rumen microbial taxonomic and functional profile assessed by shotgun metagenomics. The analysis showed that total protein, albumin, urea, and butyrate level were lower in animals infected by both parasites, while HC infection also decreased the haemoglobin level. Both infected groups (TC and HC) increased the enteric methane emission (CH4). TC and HC infections increased the diversity and richness of functional microbial genes. Most alterations in the rumen microbiome composition of infected groups are associated with the suppression of microbes involved in microbial homeostasis maintenance and expansion of the archaeal community in the infected animals. Infection led to an increased abundance of nitrogen, amino acid, protein, and energy metabolism genes. Overall, TC and HC infection increased the enteric methane emission, negatively affected taxon's responsible for maintenance de rumen homeostasis and modulated some important genes related to protein and energy metabolism.

Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection in Santa Inês lambs: impact on feed digestibility, blood markers, and nitrogen balance.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection on the hemato-biochemical parameters, feed digestibility, and nitrogen balance in Santa Inês lambs. Eighteen three-month-old Santa Ines castrated male lambs (16.9 ± 1.43 kg of body weight) were randomly distributed in two experimental treatments: infected with T. colubriformis (I, n = 9) and uninfected (U, n = 9). The I group received a total of 45,000 L3 larvae of T. colubriformis (5,000 infective larvae, three times per week, for three weeks). During the experimental period, blood, feed digestibility, and nitrogen balance were evaluated. The I lambs showed a reduction in erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and total proteins, as well as an increase in platelets and eosinophils compared to those in the U group (p < 0.05). With the exception of total protein content, these values were within the normal range for the species. Furthermore, lower dry matter and organic matter digestibility were observed in the I lambs (p = 0.08). The present findings highlight that T. colubriformis infection has the potential to impair some hemato-biochemical parameters as well as feed digestibility in lambs, which could affect their productivity.

Immune-mediated responses account for the majority of production loss for grazing meat-breed lambs during Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection

The hypothesis tested in this experiment was that Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection would reduce growth rates of grazing meat-breed lambs; however production loss would be reduced by suppression of the host immune response. The experiment had a 3×2 factorial design using 6–7 month old meat-breed lambs which remained uninfected or infected (IFY) with 2000 or 4000 T. colubriformis L3/week for 12 weeks and were immunosuppressed (SUPY) using methylprednisolone acetate once weekly or remained non-immunosuppressed (SUPN). Immunosuppression increased worm egg counts (WEC) of infected lambs (SUPY 2421 eggs per gram (epg), SUPN 1154 epg on day 84, p<0.05) and T. colubriformis burdens (p<0.05–0.10) and reduced circulating eosinophils (p<0.05 on days 11, 42, 56 and 84) and intestinal total antibody titres (p<0.02). There was a significant (p<0.05) interaction between the main effects of infection and immunosuppression with infection having a larger negative effect on the liveweight of non-immunosuppressed lambs. The immunological response of the host to T. colubriformis infection accounted for 75% of the overall cost of infection (3.1kg) with the majority of this cost occurring during the first 35 days of infection. In contrast, most of the cost associated with the direct effect of infection occurred after day 35. These results confirm in grazing meat-breed lambs that the host’s immunological response to T. colubriformis infection is the major component of production loss.

Prevalence and clinical aspects of human Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection in Lao PDR

There have been few studies on human trichostrongyliasis in Southeast Asia, information on its clinical manifestations is also sparse. Trichostrongyliasis occurs predominantly in areas where poor hygiene is common especially where human/animal feces are used as a fertilizer, thereby contaminating vegetables and stream water. The intimate coexistence of domestic animals and humans explains the prevalence of Trichostrongylus infection in such areas. The goal of the current study was to determine the prevalence of trichostrongyliasis among villagers in Thakamrien village, Sonkon district, Savannakhet province, Laos, and to investigate potential relationships between clinical features, laboratory data, and severity of infection. Of 272 villagers examined, 160 (58.8%) were determined positive for helminthic infections by fecal examination, and 59 (36.9%) of these were infected with Trichostrongylus. Only 58 cases were in the inclusion criteria of the study and then underwent further assessment, including a questionnaire on personal behaviors, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Villagers in the trichostrongyliasis group were more likely than the control group to have consumed fresh vegetables, not washed their hands before meals or after using the toilet, and to have had close contact with herbivorous animals (goats and cows). Similarly, villagers in the trichostrongyliasis group were more likely than the control group to have a history of loose feces, rash, or abdominal pain; however, no obvious clinical symptoms were observed during physical examination of the trichostrongyliasis patients. The degree of infection was determined by both fecal egg counts and quantification of adult worms after deworming. Laboratory data were evaluated for any relationship with severity of infection. No significant differences were found in laboratory values between the trichostrongyliasis and control groups, with most values being within normal limits; however, both groups had high eosinophil counts. This study demonstrated that the useful clinical characteristics of trichostrongyliasis patients include history of loose feces, rashes, and abdominal pain, as well as in personal behaviors, such as the regular consumption of fresh vegetables, lack of hand washing, and close contact with cattle.

Immune response and performance of growing Santa Ines lambs to artificial Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections

This study was carried out to evaluate the immune response and the impact of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections on the performance of growing Santa Ines lambs. Thirty male lambs, 3–4 months of age, were maintained in individual pens and restrictively randomised by weight into 3 treatment groups: (1) infected group, artificially infected with 2500 T. colubriformis larvae, three times a week, for 13 weeks, and fed ad libitum; (2) Pair-Fed Group, non-infected and fed with the same amount of food consumed by the infected animal of the same class on the previous day; and (3) control group, non-infected and fed ad libitum. Refused feed was weighed daily to assess the food intake of each lamb. Animals were weighed weekly and blood and fecal samples were collected. At the end of the trial, all lambs were euthanized to determine worm burden and collect intestinal tissues and mucus samples for histological and immunological analysis. The infected group presented eosinophilia, increased number of inflammatory cells in the mucosa, in addition to an increased production of specific immunoglobulins against T. colubriformis, which partially prevented the establishment of infective larvae. As a consequence of parasitism, the infected lambs presented reduced serum albumin concentrations and demonstrated severe small intestine lesions, such as villous atrophy and epithelial erosion, which impaired the digestion and absorption of nutrients, causing a significant loss in performance. The infected group presented a 37% reduction in daily weight gain (107.26±10.8g/day), when compared with the control group (171.07±7.15g/day). The infected lambs also demonstrated the worst food conversion, i.e., each animal needed to consume on average 10.05±0.52kg of food to gain 1kg live weight. The voluntary hay intake depression in infected animals was small, and statistical difference (P<0.01) was seen only on two occasions (ninth and 12th weeks), in comparison with the control group. In conclusion, Santa Ines lambs infected with T. colubriformis demonstrated a reduction in performance, caused by the damages produced by the adult nematodes in intestinal mucosa, and also by the immunopathological changes associated with the infection.

Intestinal amino acid absorption in lambs fed fresh Lucerne (Medicago sativa) during an established Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection

The effects of an established Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection on amino acid (AA) absorption from the small intestine and their availability to other tissues were determined in lambs 48 days post infection. The lambs were fed fresh Lucerne (Medicago sativa; ∼800 g dry matter (DM)/day) and dosed with 6000 L3 T. colubriformis larvae for 6 days (n = 5) or kept as parasite free controls (n = 6). Faecal egg production was monitored every second day from day 22 to day 48. A nitrogen (N) balance was conducted on days 35 to 43 after infection, and digesta flow and AA concentration measurements were made on day 44. On day 48 after infection, blood was continuously collected from the mesenteric artery and vein, plasma harvested and AA concentrations measured. Faecal egg production peaked on the 26th day after infection (P < 0.001) and intestinal worm burdens on day 48 were greater (P < 0.001) in the infected lambs. Feed intake and liveweight gain were similar (P > 0.10) between control and infected lambs. Digestibility and flow of DM and N through the digestive tract were also unaffected (P > 0.10) by parasite infection. Despite a trend towards higher abomasal AA flux in the parasitised lambs (P < 0.10), apparent AA absorption from the small intestine and AA availability to other tissues were unaffected (P > 0.10) by infection. These results suggest that an established parasite infection had little effect on the intestinal absorption and availability of AA to other tissues in lambs fed fresh Lucerne.

Adult Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection did not affect protein synthesis rate in whole-body, intestinal, hepatic and skeletal muscle tissues of lambs fed fresh Lucerne (Medicago sativa)

The effects of an established Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection on the whole-body and fractional protein synthesis rates in the small intestine, liver, lymphoid tissues, skeletal muscle and skin were determined in lambs fed fresh Lucerne (Medicago sativa; 800 g DM d-1) on day 48 post-infection. Lambs were dosed with 6000 L3 T. colubriformis larvae for 6 d (n = 5) or kept as parasite-free controls (n = 6). On day 45, the lambs received a bolus injection of deuterated water to measure the size of the whole-body water pool. On day 48, the lambs were continuously infused with [3, 4-3H]-valine into the jugular vein and [1-13C]-valine in the abomasum for 8 h. During the infusion, mesenteric artery blood and terminal tissue samples were collected for measuring the isotopic activity of plasma water, plasma valine, intra cellular valine and protein-bound valine. Intestinal worm numbers on day 48 were higher (P &lt; 0.001) in the infected lambs, however, there was no effect (P &gt; 0.10) of parasitic infection on feed intake, liveweight gain, whole-body protein synthesis and fractional protein synthesis of most tissues. Whole-body valine and cysteine kinetics and tissue fractional protein synthesis rates in lambs fed Sulla (&lt;I&gt;Hedysarum coronarium&lt;/I&gt;) and infected or not infected with adult &lt;I&gt;Trichostrongylus colubriformis&lt;/I&gt;

Poor growth during parasitic infection may be due to a redistribution of amino acids away from skeletal muscle protein synthesis to the intestinal site of infection. The effect of a Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection on whole-body amino acid kinetics and tissue fractional protein synthesis rates were determined in lambs fed fresh Sulla (Hedysarum coronarium; 800 g DM/d). Lambs were dosed with 6000 L3 Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae daily for 6 d (n 6) or kept as parasite-free controls (n 6). On day 45 post-infection, the lambs received an intravenous injection of 2H2O and infusions (8 h) of [35S]sulphate to measure the size of the whole-body water and sulphate pools, respectively. On day 48, the lambs were continuously infused for 8 h with [3,4-3H]valine into the jugular vein as well as with [1-13C]valine and [35S]cysteine into the abomasum. After the 8 h infusions, the lambs were killed and tissue samples collected from the duodenum, ileum, mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, spleen, thymus, muscle and skin. Feed intake (769 v. 689 (sd 47) g DM/d) was not affected by infection, whereas liveweight gains (50 v. -50 (sd 70) g/d) were lower and intestinal worm burdens (240 v. 18,000 (sd 7000) worms) higher in the infected lambs. Parasitic infection increased the fractional protein synthesis rates in the small intestine, mesenteric lymph nodes and liver but did not affect skin and skeletal muscle fractional protein synthesis rates during the established parasitic infection.

The responses of a tropical breed of domestic rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, to experimental infection with Trichostrongylus colubriformis.

Clinical, parasitological and pathological responses of a tropical out-bred domestic rabbit to experimental Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection were used to evaluate its suitability as a laboratory host and model for studying the host-parasite relationships of T. colubriformis. In the first experiment, three groups each of 16, predominantly juvenile male, 8- to 10-week-old rabbits were given a single pulse infection with 500, 5000 or 25000 infective larvae (L3) of T. colubriformis, to represent low, medium and high levels of infection, respectively. A fourth group of 16 rabbits of similar age formed the uninfected controls. In the second experiment, two groups of 10 juvenile (8- to 10-week-old) and 10 adult (8- to 10-month-old) rabbits were similarly infected with 20000 L3, with appropriate naive controls. Prepatency was 14 and 16 days and peak faecal egg counts occurred on days 24 and 20 after infection in young and adult rabbits respectively. Peak worm counts occurred on day 14 in both age groups and at all levels of infection. Subsequently, parasite burdens declined in a highly significantly dose- and age-dependent manner. At low and moderate levels of infection, approximately 83-98% of worms were recovered from the first 60 cm of the small intestine. Worm fecundity was also significantly influenced by host age and larval dose. Host age also had a significant effect on worm length. Infections with T. colubriformis were associated with a highly significant loss of body weight, accompanied by anorexia, diarrhoea and 25% mortality at high dose levels during the patent period of infection. There were no significant changes in packed cell volume and eosinophil counts at all ages and levels of infection but significant lymphocytosis occurred at the high dose level between days 7 and 21. Parasite-specific serum IgG responses were not related to worm burden. Overall, data showed that this miniature, docile and relatively inexpensive breed of rabbit is a potentially valuable laboratory host for studying T. colubriformis infections. The larval dose, duration of infection and host age were major determinants of host responsiveness to primary infections in this rabbit genotype.

Tissue protein synthesis in lambs infected with &lt;i&gt;Trichostrongylus colubriformis&lt;/i&gt;

Fractional protein synthesis rates (FSR) were determined in lambs fed fresh sulla (Hedysarum coronarium) during an established Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection. Forty-eight days after infection, the FSR in the duodenum, ileum, mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, liver, thymus, muscle and skin was determined. Parasite infection increased the FSR in the smooth muscle of the duodenum and ileum and in the mesenteric lymph nodes. This suggests an increase in amino acid requirement for the synthesis of constitutive proteins in these tissues. However, an established parasite infection did not result in the diversion of amino acids from muscle to the small intestine nor the liver.

Metabolic effects of host defence responses during gastrointestinal parasitism in sheep

Following stimulation of the immune system, tissue trauma, or exposure to some stressors, there can be activation of the acute phase response (APR). This is a primitive defence reaction that helps protect the host against noxious insults. Part of the response involvess a change in priorities for nutrient utilisation, when the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1α/β, TNFα, IL-6 and IFNα/β override the normal hypothalamic-somatotropic control of nutrient utilisation. The pro-inflammatory cytokines reduce protein synthesis and increase protein catabolism in muscle, induce synthesis of acute phase proteins in liver, and decrease de novo fatty acid synthesis and increase lipolysis in adipose tissue. In the central nervous system there is induction of fever, which increases metabolic rate, and induction of sickness behaviour. There are few reports in the literature of studies on the APR during gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in sheep. However, IL-6 message is present in mucosa during Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection and mast cells in many species contain preformed TNFα. The changes in appetite, growth and nitrogen metabolism seen during GIN parasitism in sheep are in accord with the systemic effects of the APR. This review reports studies on activation of the APR in mastitis and fly strike, and the effects of APR on wool growth in high and low tensile strength genotypes and during Haemonchus contortus infection. The modified capacity of tissues to take up amino acids during pro-inflammatory cytokine perturbation of nutrient utilisation may limit the capacity for dietary supplementation to remedy the cost of host defence. Genetic variation may occur in production of pro-inflammatory cytokines or in tissue sensitivity to pro-inflammatory cytokines during GIN infection and may provide a basis for selection for resilience. Some questions for future research are identified.

The potential of nematophagous fungi to control the free-living stages of nematode parasites of sheep: feeding and block studies with Duddingtonia flagrans

A series of feeding trials was conducted with penned sheep harboring Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections. They were offered barley grains supporting the growth of the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans. It was shown that as little as 5 g of grain/sheep per day was sufficient to virtually eliminate larval numbers from faecal culture. This effect persisted for the time that the fungal grains were fed, and for up to 2 days following cessation of feeding this material. Macerated fungal grains were also incorporated into a range of feed block formulations. In all these, D. flagrans was found to survive the manufacturing process and resulted in significant reductions in larval numbers in faecal cultures set up during the feeding period to sheep. This was observed even for sheep that showed only modest and irregular block consumption. These studies demonstrate that supplementary feeding or block administration offer potential deployment options for D. flagrans as a means of biological control of nematode parasites of livestock.

Expression of cell surface adhesion molecules by peripheral blood eosinophils during Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection in sheep.

The effect of infection of sheep with the gastrointestinal nematode parasite Trichostrongylus colubriformis on expression of adhesion molecules CD11a, CD11b, CD11c, CD18, CD44, CD49d and CD62L by peripheral blood eosinophils was examined by flow cytometry. Initially, to establish the sensitivity of adhesion molecules to inflammatory signals, eosinophil-rich exudates were elicited in non-lactating mammary glands of immune sheep by infusion of 50 microg of soluble antigen extract from T. colubriformis third stage larvae. Eosinophils comprised 40.8% of mammary leucocytes and 4.5% of peripheral blood leucocytes. In comparison with blood, the percentage of eosinophils expressing CD18 increased and the percentage expressing CD62L decreased in exudates and the mean fluorescent intensity, an indicator of receptor number per cell, for CD11a and CD49d also decreased on exudate eosinophils. Peripheral blood eosinophils were examined over 8 weeks during trickle infection of immune sheep with infective or irradiated third stage larvae of T. colubriformis. During the last 3 weeks of infection, CD11a staining decreased in infected sheep and CD44 staining decreased in sheep receiving either infective or irradiated larvae. Other surface markers did not change. The results indicate that systemic changes in expression of adhesion molecules by eosinophils occur during T. colubriformis infection in sheep.

Induction of protective immunity to Trichostrongylus colubriformis in neonatal Merino lambs

The premise that any bias of immune reactivity in neonatal lambs towards T-helper (TH)2 responses could benefit the induction of protection against gastrointestinal nematodes was investigated. In two trials, lambs were either trickle-immunised with 2000 infective larvae of Trichostrongylus colubriformis (TcL 3), 3 times weekly from the day of birth for 6 weeks or inoculated with a recombinant T. colubriformis 17 kDa antigen in incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA). In trial 1, trickle immunised and control neonates challenged at 7 weeks of age had similar worm counts 10 days after challenge, but from 25 days, significant reductions ( P<0.01) in mean faecal egg count and worm count in excess of 75% were displayed by the immunised lambs. The results of a second, similar trial, gave 85–91% reductions in parasitism in trickle immunised neonates ( P<0.001) and around 50% protection in neonates vaccinated with recombinant 17 kDa antigen. Parasitism in immunised neonates in Trial 2 was significantly reduced ( P<0.001) compared to that in 4-month-old animals. Antibody responses in trickle-immunised (protected) and challenge control (infected) neonates were almost exclusively of the IgG 1 isotype compared to vaccinated animals which exhibited increased levels of anti-17 kD IgG 2. Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection, but not specific vaccination, induced interleukin-5 production by mesenteric lymph node cells. The results offer the tantalising prospect of generating protective immunity to gastrointestinal parasites prior to weaning in sheep; this was most effectively generated by viable parasites in this investigation.

In previous studies where sheep were subjected to experimental subclinical Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections, protein metabolism was seriously impaired during both the initial infection (5-7 weeks at early dosing) and the subsequent immune response (11-13 weeks of dosing) periods (see MacRae, 1993). Symonds and Jones (1983) reported that T. colubriformis infection increased the rates of protein synthesis in the small and large intestines of guinea pigs by 24 and 70% respectively, however there are no equivalent data in farm animals. In the present study trans-organ catheterisation procedures have been coupled with mass isotope tracer kinetics to examine leucine metabolism across the gastrointestinal (g.i.) tract of lambs subjected to subclinical T. colubriformis infection.

Development of morphological changes and ileal glucagon gene expression in the small intestine of lambs infected with Trichostrongylus colubriformis

To investigate the consequences of subclinical Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection on the intestinal mucosa and the associated changes in entero-glucagon gene expression, sheep were infected with 30000 larvae and killed 5, 10, 15 or 20 days after infection. Histological and cytological changes were examined. In the main site of infection, the upper duodenum, villous atrophy associated with crypt hyperplasia developed gradually. Cytological changes in the enterocytes appeared concurrently, characterized by a progressive reduction in brush border and in the number of ribosomes in the cytoplasm, changes in the internal structure of mitochondria, and enlargement of the intercellular spaces. Neither histological nor cytological modifications were found before day 15. At the same time, villous hypertrophy developed distally, beyond the main site of infection; this was interpreted as an adaptive response to parasitism. Enteroglucagon gene expression in the ileum was measured in parallel with the mucosal changes but did not reveal any difference between infected and control sheep. The results indicate that this gastrointestinal hormone does not have a major role in the response to nematode parasitism.

Changes in T cell subpopulations of sheep due to age and dietary protein intake; association with protective immunity to Trichostrongylus colubriformis

Purified lymphocytes from peripheral blood and cannulated intestinal lymph were examined by flow cytometry, to study the effect of age, level of dietary protein, and prior exposure to helminths on their composition. This was then compared with animals resistant to Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection. When young lambs consumed a low protein diet, they developed significantly lower protective immunity to the parasite than age-matched animals offered a high protein diet, or older animals irrespective of diet. In the peripheral blood there was an increased percentage of CD4 +, CD5 + and CD8 + cells with increasing age (from 8 to 51 weeks). The percent of CD4 + cells in lambs that repeatedly ingested infective larvae was significantly increased in both peripheral blood and mesenteric lymph, compared with non-immunized animals. There was a significant interaction of dietary protein and immunization, as the percentage of T19 + cells from mesenteric lymph in young lambs that consumed a high protein diet increased when they were sensitized and challenged with larvae, while this was not apparent in those that consumed a low protein diet. The increase of peripheral and local CD4 + cells may contribute to development of protective immunity to the parasite. Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection in rabbits: Persistence of the distal adaptive response to parasitism after anthelmintic treatment

Mucosal changes associated with anthelmintic treatment in Trichostrongylus colubriformis-infected rabbits were assessed along the entire length of the small intestine. The following groups, each of five rabbits, were compared: infected (group I); infected and treated on day 21 with fenbendazole (group IT); uninfected but given fenbendazole on day 21 (group C, controls). All animals were killed on day 28. In the proximal part of the small intestine of group I rabbits, the worms were associated with shortening of the villi and a significant depletion in alkaline phosphatase activity, which differed significantly from the findings in groups C and IT. In the same region, no difference was found between groups C and IT. In the distal small intestine, hypertrophy of villi and crypts (an adaptive response to the infection), coupled with an increase in enzymic activity, were present in both groups I and IT, in contrast to group C. These results suggest that a complete mucosal restoration occurred within 7 days of anthelmintic treatment in the parasitized part of the intestine. In contrast, the adaptive response observed beyond the main site of parasitism was not abolished by treatment. The functional significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the compensatory growth commonly observed after anthelmintic treatment in ruminants.
