Degradation of trichloroacetic acid by Fe/Ni bimetallic reactive PMS with hierarchical layered structure

Overuse of chlorinated disinfectants leads to a significant accumulation of disinfection by-products. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a typical carcinogenic disinfection by-product. The efficacy of the conventional degradation process is reduced by the complex nature of its structure, causing a yearly increase in its prevalence within the ecological environment and consequent infliction of significant harm. In this paper, TCA was chosen as the research subject, Fe/Ni bimetallic nanoparticles were employed as the reducing catalyst, ZIF-8@HMON as the catalytic carrier combined with Fe/Ni nanoparticles, and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was introduced to construct the reducing-advanced oxidation synergistic system and investigated the effect of this system on the degradation performance and degradation pathway of TCA. Various characterization techniques, including TEM, SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, BET, were employed to investigate the morphology, element composition and structure of composite materials analysis. Moreover, the conditions for TCA degradation can be optimized by changing the experimental environment. The results showed that 25 mg of composite catalyst (mole ratio Fe: Ni = 1:1) and 10 mg of PMS effectively degraded TCA within 20–80 mg/L range at pH = 3 and 55 °C, achieving maximum degradation within 20 min. Finally, the potential pathways of TCA degradation were analyzed using EPR and LC-MS, and the corresponding reaction mechanisms were proposed.

Fe0Ni0 bimetal co-immobilized horseradish peroxidase on ZIF-8@HMON for degradation of trichloroacetic acid

As a common pollutant in the environment, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is difficult to be completely degraded by common advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) due to its high C-Cl bond content. Advanced oxidation–reduction processes (AORPs) may improve the degradation performance of TCA. In this work, we use Fe0Ni0 bimetal as reducing catalyst, hollow mesoporous silicone nanoparticles (HMONs) modified by ZIF-8 as immobilized carrier, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and Fe0Ni0 were fixed in the carrier to form a AORP system for degradation of TCA. The effects of temperature, pH, H2O2 concentration, doping ratio on the degradation performance of the catalyst and the degradation mechanism of the composite catalyst were investigated. Degradation experiments showed that H· and OH· were present in the dual system, dechlorination and decarboxylation exist at the same time. Under the condition of 55 °C and pH = 4, 30 mg Fe0Ni0 and 20 mg immobilized enzyme shows the best degradation on TCA, and 81.48 % of 20 mg·L−1 TCA could be degraded by 2 h.

Degradation and dechlorination of trichloroacetic acid induced by an in situ 222 nm KrCl* excimer radiation

Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic epidemic, the excessive usage of chlorinated disinfectants raised the substantial risks of disinfection by-products (DBPs) exposure. While several technologies may remove the typical carcinogenic DBPs, trichloroacetic acid (TCAA), their application for continuous treatment is limited due to their complexity and expensive or hazardous inputs. In this study, degradation and dechlorination of TCAA induced by an in situ 222 nm KrCl* excimer radiation as well as role of oxygen in the reaction pathway were investigated. Quantum chemical calculation methods were used to help predict the reaction mechanism. Experimental results showed that UV irradiance increased with increasing input power and decreased when the input power exceeded 60 W. Decomposition and dechlorination were simultaneously achieved, where around 78% of TCAA (0.62 mM) can be eliminated and 78% dechlorination within 200 min. Dissolved oxygen showed little effect on the TCAA degradation but greatly boosted the dechlorination as it can additionally generate hydroxyl radical (•OH) in the reaction process. Computational results showed that under 222 nm irradiation, TCAA was excited from S0 to S1 state and then decayed by internal crossing process to T1 state, and a reaction without potential energy barrier followed, resulting in the breaking of C–Cl bond and finally returning to S0 state. Subsequent C–Cl bond cleavage occurred by a barrierless •OH insertion and HCl elimination (27.9 kcal/mol). Finally, the •OH attacked (14.6 kcal/mol) the intermediate byproducts, leading to complete dechlorination and decomposition. The KrCl* excimer radiation has obvious advantages in terms of energy efficiency compared to other competitive methods. These results provide insight into the mechanisms of TCAA dechlorination and decomposition under KrCl* excimer radiation, as well as important information for guiding research toward direct and indirect photolysis of halogenated DBPs.

Degradation of trichloroacetic acid by MOFs-templated CoFe/graphene aerogels in peroxymonosulfate activation

Integrating transition-metal and nitrogen into carbon-based materials have been attracted considerable attention in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, but it is a great challenge to establish strong interactions between metal species and graphene. Here, we established metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-hydrogels which acted as templates to form a family of FeCo/graphene aerogels (C-FeCo, C-CoMIL and C-FeZIF). The C-FeZIF, which co-doped Fe/Co and nitrogen into graphene aerogel, exhibited the most regular and stable metallic frameworks, the best crystallization and biggest pore sizes; it also showed the highest efficiency and stability in PMS catalysis for trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) degradation among these aerogels. By comparative analysis on different catalysis conditions (including catalyst dosage, PMS concentrations and reaction pH), 1 g/L C-FeZIF with 4 mM of PMS reacting under pH 5 showed to be the optimum conditions with an 81.2% removal of TCAA in 160 min. Meanwhile, the C-FeZIF/PMS system also performed well in TCAA degradation within a wide pH range from 3 to 9. Radical analysis suggested that 1O2 was the main active species produced in the C-FeZIF/PMS system, while both SO4•- and •OH radicals assisted the catalytic process to a certain extent. The synthesis process is environmentally friendly, easy to carry out, safe and stable with no secondary pollution, which could be scaled up easily for catalyst preparation for water treatment.

UV/ peroxymonosulfate process for degradation of chloral hydrate: Pathway and the role of radicals

In this study, kinetics, influencing factors and potential mechanisms involved in the degradation of chloral hydrate (CH) by UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process were demonstrated. The degradation rate of CH could reach 89.6% by UV254/PMS process, significantly exceeding UV300/PMS (0.7%), UV350/PMS (6.3%), UV254 direct photolysis (9.0%) and PMS alone (0.0%) processes. CH degradation in UV254/PMS system followed pseudo first-order degradation kinetics with an apparent rate constant of 0.186 min−1, which was suppressed by Cl− and HCO3−. The optimal pH for CH degradation was around 5.0. Direct mineralization accounted for the CH degradation in UV/PMS system. Interestingly, the addition of PMS at the neutral condition before UV irradiation transferred CH into trichloroacetic acid (TCAA). The transformation efficiency of CH into TCAA at 10 min was enhanced from 2.17%–40.38% with the elevation of initial pH from 7.0–8.0. The subsequent exposure of UV lamps ceased the transformation of CH into TCAA and facilitated the direct mineralization of CH, but it did not work in the refractory TCAA degradation. Finally, it was revealed that HO predominantly participated CH degradation in UV/PMS process, while O2− was responsible for the transformation of CH into TCAA by addition of PMS before UV irradiation.

Enhanced photocatalytic reduction of trichloroacetic acid using F-TiO2 in the presence of methanol: degradation kinetics and byproducts pathway

ABSTRACTTrichloroacetic acid (TCAA) is considered as one of the major of water chlorination by-products. The present work demonstrates decomposition, mineralisation and dechlorination of TCAA by photocatalytic reduction using F doped TiO2. In this regard, the effects of various operational factors including F-TiO2 dose, the initial concentration of TCAA, photo-reaction time and solution pH were examined on the process efficiency. Based on the results, ,,,and, as the common anions in water, had no considerable impact on the TCAA degradation efficiency. Decomposition and mineralisation rate of TCAA by MeOH/UV/F-TiO2process under the optimum conditions (catalyst dosage of 0.34 g L−1, the contact time of 76 min, TCAA content of 1 mg L−1 and pH of 7.9) were found to be 97.1% and 68%, respectively. The decomposition intermediates of TCAAdetected by LC/MS and LC-MS/MStechniques were non-chlorinated compounds, mainly formic and acetic acids. It can be concluded thatMeOH/UV/F-TiO2processcan use as low energy and efficiently treatment method for the degradation of TCAA contaminated water and wastewater.

Simultaneous Degradation of Aqueous Trichloroacetic Acid by the Combined Action of Anodic Contact Glow Discharge Electrolysis and Normal Electrolytic Processes at the Cathode

To enhance the removal of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) by anodic contact glow discharge electrolysis (CGDE), the combined degradation of TCA by the action of anodic CGDE, denoted anodic degradation, and normal electrolytic processes at the cathode, denoted cathodic degradation, was investigated. Here, this overall process is termed simultaneous degradation. Compared to anodic degradation, in simultaneous degradation, the reduction rates for TCA and total organic carbon (TOC) increased from 65.32% and 62.03% to 91.82% and 73.03%, respectively. Meanwhile, the dechlorination rate rose from 64.6 to 80.12%. For simultaneous degradation, the disappearance of TCA, the reduction in the TOC, and the dechlorination of TCA, followed first-order kinetics. The reaction intermediates were detected and, based on the intermediates and the observed kinetics, the effects of the simultaneous degradation of TCA, TOC, and dechlorination of TCA are discussed. The cathode materials, length of the anode dipped into the electrolyte, and Pd loading on the Ni cathode all affected the simultaneous degradation of TCA significantly. The effect of the addition of Fe2+ was also investigated. The additive and synergistic effects of the combination of anodic and cathodic degradations on simultaneous degradation are discussed. Based on these results, an analysis of the degradation of TCA suggests that ·OH and ·H/e aq − generated by the action of anodic CGDE, as well as the ·Hads generated on the Pd-loaded Ni cathode surface, are the key species responsible for the dechlorination of TCA. Furthermore, possible mechanistic routes for the simultaneous degradation of TCA are proposed.

Contribution of alcohol radicals to contaminant degradation in quenching studies of persulfate activation process

Alcohols such as ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butanol (TBA) are frequently used as quenching agents to identify the primary radical species in the persulfate (PS)-based oxidation processes. However, the contribution of alcohol radicals (ARs) to contaminant degradation in this process has rarely been assessed. In this study, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), phenol, and carbon tetrachloride were selected as probes to test the role of ARs in the thermally activated PS system. It was found that the degradation rates of these compounds were largely depended on their reactivities with ARs and the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the reaction system. In the PS/alcohol system, TCA was degraded efficiently under anaerobic conditions, while it was hardly degraded in the presence of oxygen. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance, reducing radical quenching studies, and the analysis of PS consumption suggested that ARs were the dominant reactive species contributing to TCA degradation in the PS/EtOH system under anaerobic conditions. Further studies indicated that ARs could significantly degrade CCl4 through dechlorination but not phenol. CCl4 was also degraded efficiently by ARs when oxygen in the reaction solution was completely consumed by ARs. This study highlights the important role of alcohol radicals in the degradation of contaminants during quenching studies in PS-activated processes.

Trichloroacetic acid reduction by an advanced reduction process based on carboxyl anion radical

UV254 irradiation combined with TiO2 in the presence of formate (FM) was used to develop a carboxyl anion radical (CO2-)-based process to degrade trichloroacetic acid (TCAA). The efficiency and mechanism of TCAA decontamination were examined, and its potential for practical use was then assessed by evaluating the effects of process variables (FM dosage, solution pH, temperature, HCO3-, dissolved organic matter, and NO3-), the treatability of residual FM, and the technical economy on TCAA. Results showed that even without O2 stripping, the UV/TiO2/FM process degraded TCAA more efficiently than the UV/TiO2/O2 aeration process. The kinetic and transformant investigation suggested that CO2- and hydrated electron (eaq-) were involved in TCAA degradation by attacking the C–Cl bond. The CO2- precursor (FM) had an optimum dosage. The redundancy analysis indicated that the effect of six variables on degradation efficiency followed the order of temperature>FM dosage>HCO3->NO3->pH. The remaining FM cannot be eliminated by the adsorption by activated carbon and magnetic ion exchange resin. The economic evaluation revealed that most of the expenses went to the production of primary radicals such as HO and eaq- (sources of secondary radical CO2-). Therefore, a simple, harmless, efficient, and low-energy-consuming process is desired to generate CO2- for halogenated pollutant removal.

Trichloroacetic acid removal by a reductive spherical cellulose adsorbent

A novel spherical cellulose adsorbent with amide and sulphinate groups was used for a first reduction of trichloroacetic acid(TCAA) and a subsequent adsorption of generated species, haloacetic acids. The removal mechanism involved TCAA reduction by sulphinate groups and the adsorption of the haloacetic acids through electrostatic interaction with amide group. Investigation of product formation and subsequent disappearance reveals that the reduction reactions proceed via sequential hydrogenolysis, and transform to acetate ultimately. Adsorption of haloacetic acids was ascertained by low chloride mass balances(89.3%) and carbon mass balances(75.1%) in solution. The pseudo-first-order rate constant for TCAA degradation was (0.93±0.12) h–1. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of pH value on the reduction and adsorption process. The results show that the reduction of TCAA by sulphinate groups requires higher pH values while the electrostatic attraction of haloacetic acids by amino group is favorable in more acidic media.

Degradation of trichloroacetic acid with an efficient Fenton assisted TiO2 photocatalytic hybrid process: Reaction kinetics, byproducts and mechanism

Degradation kinetics, byproducts and mechanism for trichloroacetic acid were analyzed in an efficient TiO2 photocatalytic process combined with Fenton reagent. Modified pseudo first-order kinetics was firstly established and it was more rigorous than the real first-order kinetics, and then the apparent rate constant was calculated and it mainly influenced by initial concentration of TCAA, aqueous solution pH and the dosages of Fe2+ and TiO2. Intermediated byproducts detected with ion chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography methods were mainly Cl−, dichloroacetic acid, monochloroacetic acid, acetic acid, formic acid and CO2 in aqueous solution. To analyze the tracks of carbon and chlorine elements, main byproducts were quantified and the mass balance for carbon and chlorine elements was established. Mineralization of TCAA was 92% after 5h and the final product is CO2 and HCl. Degradation mechanism involving dechlorination, decarboxylization and oxidation was achieved, and the major degradation pathway was as follows: trichloroacetic acid→dichloroacetic acid→formic acid and monochloroacetic acid→formic acid and acetic acid→formic acid→CO2.

Degradation of trichloroacetic acid by an efficient Fenton/UV/TiO2 hybrid process and investigation of synergetic effect

An efficient hybrid degradation process combined Fenton with TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation for trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) was first investigated, and then the synergetic degradation effect between Fenton reagent and TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation was discussed in this study. The dominant factors, such as dosages of TiO2 and Fe2+, TCAA concentration and pH were researched and optimized. The cooperation effect between Fenton and TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation probably occurred because (1) more OH radicals were produced in the Fe(OH)2+ and H2O2 decomposition reactions irradiated by UV light; and (2) photoinduced electrons voluntarily participated in the reduction from Fe3+ to Fe2+, improving the efficient separation of the photogenerated electrons and holes. Adsorption and degradation were both involved in the removal of TCAA in this hybrid process, and the removal of TCAA followed the Langmuir model and the degradation kinetics accorded with first order degradation kinetics. Toxicity test using a bioluminescent bacterium Photobacterium phosphoreum as the indicator proved that the hybrid process was a safe treatment because the toxicity decreased greatly with the degradation time.

On the transformation of trichloroacetic acid in aqueous media

The influence of the chemical composition of water on the rate of volatilization and degradation of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) has been investigated. The schemes of possible secondary pollution of territories adjacent to the polluted water bodies were discussed on the basis of measuring the surface tension, TCA distribution in solution, and the analysis of kinetic parameters of its volatilization and oxidation.

Sonophotocatalytic degradation of trichloroacetic acid in aqueous solution

The degradation of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in water under ultrasound (US), ultraviolet (UV)/TiO2, and combination of UV/TiO2 and US irradiation was investigated. It was found that the extent of sonophotocatalytic degradation was higher compared with sonolysis or photolysis alone. The influence of operating parameters such as TiO2 concentration, pH values, temperature and dissolved gases on sonophotocatalytic degradation of TCA was studied. Enhancement in the degradation rate has been observed at a higher catalyst loading, a higher temperature and an acidic condition under dissolved oxygen. In addition, the degradation kinetics, mechanism and possible degradation products were discussed in detail.

Electrochemical degradation of trichloroacetic acid in aqueous media: influence of the electrode material

The electrochemical degradation of trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) in water has been analysed through voltammetric studies with a rotating disc electrode and controlled-potential bulk electrolyses. The influence of the mass-transport conditions and initial concentration of TCAA for titanium, stainless steel and carbon electrodes has been studied. It is shown that the electrochemical reduction of TCAA takes place prior to the massive hydrogen evolution in the potential window for all electrode materials studied. The current efficiency is high (>18%) compared with those normally reported in the literature, and the fractional conversion is above 50% for all the electrodes studied. Only dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and chloride anions were routinely detected as reduction products for any of the electrodes, and reasonable values of mass balance error were obtained. Of the three materials studied, the titanium cathode gave the best results.

Bioelectrocatalytic dechlorination of trichloroacetic acid at gel-immobilized hemoglobin on multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified graphite electrode: Kinetic modeling and reaction pathways

In bioelectrochemically reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organic compounds (COCs), the electrons transfer from enzyme in the electrode to COCs was the key step, which determined the average current efficiency (CE) and was influenced by the pH and temperature of the systems. In this work, the effect of temperature (288–318K) and pH (2–11) of the electrolyte on decholrination of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) was investigated in the sodium alginate/hemoglobin-multiwalled carbon nanotubes-graphite composite electrode (Hb/SA–MWCNT–GE). The results showed that the most favourable degradation conditions for TCA by Hb/SA–MWCNT–GE were found to be pH 3 and 310K. By varying the pH of the systems, it was found that a proton accompanied with an electron transfer between the electrode and heme Fe(III)/Fe(II) of Hb during the reaction. Additionally, the activation energy of 26.2kJmol−1 was also calculated by the Arrhenius equation for the reaction. The total mass balance of the reactant and the products was in the range of 97–105% during the bioelectrochemically reductive reaction. The CE only decreased from 87% to 83% when the Hb/SA–MWCNT–GE was used 5 times. Based on the intermediates detected, a pathway was proposed for TCA degradation in which it underwent dechlorination process. The main degradation mechanism described by a parallel reaction rather than by a sequential reaction for dechlorination of TCA in Hb/SA–MWCNT–GE system was proposed. These data provided relevant information about the applicability of bioelectrocatalytic systems for treatment of wastewater contaminated by COCs.

Degradation and toxicity changes in aqueous solutions of chloroacetic acids by Fenton-like treatment using zero-valent iron

AbstractThree priority pollutants, i.e. mono-, di-, and trichloroacetic acids, were degraded by the conventional Fenton AOP system (Fe2+ and H2O2). The results obtained suggest that the degradation decreased in the order: monochloroacetic, dichloroacetic, and trichloroacetic acid. The best of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the degradation of trichloroacetic acid was reductive dechlorination with the use of zero-valent iron (Fe°). The results of Escherichia coli toxicity tests revealed that the reagents’ toxicity after the Fenton treatment process was decreased.

Towards the complete dechlorination of chloroacetic acids in water by sonoelectrochemical methods: Effect of the anodic material on the degradation of trichloroacetic acid and its by-products

The total dechlorination of chloroacetic acids in aqueous solutions has been achieved using high-frequency sonoelectrochemical methods. Compared to previous studies, the sonoelectrochemical degradation efficiency was found to be dependent on the ultrasonic frequency and electrodes used. Fractional conversions for trichloroacetic acid and its chlorinated by-products higher than 95% and degradation efficiencies higher than 50% were achieved in all cases where high-frequency sonoelectrochemical experiments were conducted in absence of a background electrolyte. The best results were obtained using lead dioxide as anode and steel as cathode, where both the fractional conversion and degradation efficiency resulted higher than 99.5%. The use of the electricity as unique reactant and the appearing mineralization of the trichloroacetic acids and its by-products make the sonoelectrochemical technology a serious alternative to current technologies.

Position‐specific carbon isotope analysis of trichloroacetic acid by gas chromatography/isotope ratio mass spectrometry

Trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) is an important environmental contaminant present in soils, water and plants. A method for determining the carbon isotope signature of the trichloromethyl position in TCAA using gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) was developed and tested with TCAA from different origins. Position-specific isotope analysis (PSIA) can provide direct information on the kinetic isotope effect for isotope substitution at a specific position in the molecule and/or help to distinguish different sources of a compound. The method is based on the degradation of TCAA into chloroform (CF) and CO₂ by thermal decarboxylation. Since thermal decarboxylation is associated with strong carbon isotope fractionation (ε = -34.6 ± 0.2‰) the reaction conditions were optimized to ensure full conversion. The combined isotope ratio of CF and CO₂ at the end of the reaction corresponded well to the isotope ratio of TCAA, confirming the reliability of the method. A method quantification limit (MQL) for TCAA of 18.6 µg/L was determined. Samples of TCAA produced by enzymatic and non-enzymatic chlorination of natural organic matter (NOM) and some industrially produced TCAA were used as exemplary sources. Significant different PSIA isotope ratios were observed between industrial TCAA and TCAA samples produced by chlorination of NOM. This highlights the potential of the method to study the origin and the fate of TCAA in the environment.

Suppression of immunity by some pesticides, xenobiotics, and industrial chemicals. <i>In vitro</i> model

In recent years, attention has focused on suppression of immunity in immunocompromised patients. The definition of immunocompromise is impairment of the immune system caused by a disease or treatment. In addition to disease and treatment, other factors such as exposure to pesticides or toxic chemicals can damage the immune system. An in vitro test was used to assess the ability of monochloroacetic acid (MCA) (CAS number 79-11-8), dichloroacetic acid (DCA) (CAS number 79-43-6), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) (CAS number 76-03-9), and 2,2- dichloropropionic acid sodium salt (2,2-DCPANa, Dalapon) (CAS number 127-20-8) to suppress bacteriolysis by hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL). The system for bacteriolysis of Gram-negative bacteria Actinobacillus, Haemophilus, and Pasteurella in Tris-maleate buffer supplemented with EDTA and HEWL developed by Brondz et al. [1–4] was used to monitor bacteriolysis of Gram-negative bacteria in the Actinobacillus–Haemophilus–Pasteurella group. The halogenated acetic acid DCA is produced as a toxic artifact of the degradation of TCA and by disinfection of drinking and pool water and industrial waste. Nearly all humans consume DCA in drinking water during their lifetime; the concentration of DCA in drinking water can be higher than that associated with the upper-bound excess life-time cancer risk of 10–4 (40μg/L) [5]. Lysozyme found in tears, saliva, nasal secretions, and excretions from all mucous membranes can break down the cell walls of bacteria and destabilize bacterial membranes. Lysozyme is involved in innate (nonspecific) immunity; the innate immune system is the first line of defense against invading organisms. Actinobacillus actinomy- cetemcomitans (ATCC29522), a Gram-negative bacterium whose primary ecological niche is the respiratory tract and oral cavity, provided the peptidoglycan substrate for HEWL. The optical density (OD) of a standardized suspension of A. actinomycetemcomitans decreased from 100% (OD 0.6 at 540 nm) to 23.5% after exposure to EDTA/HEWL for 50 min. After 50 min of exposure to 10.0 mg/mL of MCA, DCA, TCA, or 2,2-DCPANa as a supplement, EDTA/HEWL-induced lysis of A. actinomycetemcomitans decreased to 66.3%, 66.8%, 65.7%, and 73.6%, respectively. The aim of the presented study was the development of a model for measuring possible immunotoxic effects of chemicals, degradation products, xenobiotics and metabolites by these chemicals on the immune system. The method used is an in vitro bacteriolysis of Gram- negative bacterium induced by HEWL, described previously [1-4]. In the present study, several halogenated acids, MCA, DCA, and TCA, and the Na salt of 2,2-DCPA, exhibited immunosuppressive activity.
