Trends in mathematics education and insights from a meta-review and bibliometric analysis of review studies

Review studies are vital for advancing knowledge in many scientific fields, including mathematics education, amid burgeoning publications. Based on an extensive consideration of existing review typologies, we conducted a meta-review and bibliometric analysis to provide a comprehensive overview of and deeper insights into review studies within mathematics education. After searching Web of Science, we identified 259 review studies, revealing a significant increase in such studies over the last five years. Systematic reviews were the most prevalent type, followed by meta-analyses, generic literature reviews, and scoping reviews. On average, the review studies had a sample size of 99, with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines commonly employed. Despite certain studies offering nuanced distinctions among review types, ambiguity persisted. Only about a quarter of the studies explicitly reported employing specific theoretical frameworks (particularly, technology, knowledge, and competence models). Co-authored publications were most common within American institutions and the leading countries are the United States, Germany, China, Australia, and England in publishing most review studies. Educational review journals, educational psychology journals, special education journals, educational technology journals, and mathematics education journals provided platforms for review studies, and prominent research topics included digital technologies, teacher education, mathematics achievement, and learning disabilities. In this study, we synthesised a range of reviews to facilitate readers’ comprehension of conceptual congruities and disparities across various review types, as well as to track current research trends. The results suggest that there is a need for discipline-specific standards and guidelines for different types of mathematics education reviews, which may lead to more high-quality review studies to enhance progress in mathematics education.

 The publication of the results of mathematics education research has increased and developed from time to time, especially in accredited national journals. This study aims to provide an overview of research trends in mathematics education published in Mosharafa : Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika which accredited on grade Sinta 2 and to identify opportunities for future mathematics education research. This research is a scoping literature review using the five-stage framework of Arksey & O'Malley. A review was conducted of 90 articles in the field of mathematics education published in Mosharafa : Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika in 2021-2022 period. Based on the results and discussion, it shows that the trend of mathematics education journals (2021-2022) in Mosharafa : Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika is the dominant research topic used, namely regarding the ability to think mathematically, while research topics that are minimally used include book analysis. The dominant research subjects used were junior high school students, while the minimum was the general public. The dominant research methods used are qualitative research and quantitative research. While the recommendations that the dominant researcher suggests are regarding further researchers being able to apply, develop and examine more deeply the research that has been carried out and the next researcher should apply new and interesting variations to the research that will be carried out.
 
 
 
 

Metaphor Studies Investigation in Mathematics Education: A Systematic Review

Metaphor is a powerful cognitive tool to understand or develop mathematical concepts. Although metaphor has been progressively recognized in mathematics education, there is an inadequate systematic review of its application and achievement. Therefore, this study aims to investigate and map metaphors studies trends in mathematics education. Data were collected from a systematic review of 70 metaphor studies in mathematics education published from 2012–2021 using the PRISMA guidelines. The results showed the mapping of the metaphor studies' attributes in mathematics education. Future research can use this information as the basis for determining the novelty of research related to metaphors. Furthermore, they can use this information to determine its potential and opportunities for future research. The primary limitation of this review is related to the sensitivity of the search strategy, which makes it impossible to cover relevant studies comprehensively.

Appraisal of Trends in Mathematics Education Curriculum: Gender and Indigenous Knowledge Perspectives

This paper is based on analysis of curriculum and experiences generated from mathematics teachers’ educators and desk review of curriculum document.It also focuses the critical appraisal of the curriculum Trends in Mathematics Education on gender and indigenous knowledge perspectivesThiscourse is recently revised and approved by theFaculty of Education for Masters level students of Mathematics Education. This course has been designed and prepared to trace the trends of various aspects of teaching and learning mathematics education. It critically assessedthe social, cultural, and inclusive educational issues and problems including gender and indigenous knowledge (IK) in teaching and learning mathematics practices at different levels from school to the university. The findings of the study shows that in the context of present curriculum Trends in Mathematics Education, there is little bit space for gender and IK but it is not sufficient. The opinion of teachers revels that some of the teachers integrated the issue of gender and IK on pedagogy, assessment and research. We can apply gender responsive pedagogy by inspiring students to make gender-reflections, generate greater equality in the classroom, and stimulate students to become gender-actors in society at large.

The future of mathematics education since COVID-19: humans-with-media or humans-with-non-living-things.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the agenda of mathematics education. This change will be analyzed by looking at three trends in mathematics education: the use of digital technology, philosophy of mathematics education, and critical mathematics education. Digital technology became a trend in mathematics education in response to the arrival of a different kind of artifact to the mathematics classroom. It was thrust into the spotlight as the pandemic suddenly moved classrooms online around the world. Challenges specific to mathematics education in this context must be addressed. The link between the COVID-19 pandemic and digital technology in education also raises epistemological issues highlighted by philosophy of mathematics education and critical mathematics education. Using the notion that the basic unit of knowledge production throughout history is humans-with-media, I discuss how humans are connected to the virus, how it has laid bare social inequality, and how it will change the agendas of these three trends in mathematics education. I highlight the urgent need to study how mathematics education happens online for children when the home environment and inequalities in access to digital technologies assume such significant roles as classes move on-line. We need to understand the political role of agency of artifacts such as home in collectives of humans-with-media-things, and finally we need to learn how to implement curricula that address social inequalities. This discussion is intertwined with examples.

Equity Trends in Mathematics Education: A Content Analysis of Meta-analytic Research

The purpose of this quantitative content analysis (QCA) was to characterize equity-related trends in meta-analyses of mathematics education studies. An a priori keyword search and retrieval process produced an initial pool of 156 studies. After applying the prescribed inclusion criteria, the initial pool of studies was reduced to a final sample of 32 studies. These studies were coded and analyzed as part of the QCA. The coding and analysis were guided by a critical quantitative research lens, which examines how numeric trends can help to unpack systemic and systematic practices that support the agenda of the dominant cultural group. The results indicate that 62.5 percent of the reviewed studies lacked an equity focus, while most equity-focused meta-analyses examined challenges related to student ability. Moreover, 14 out of the 16 or 87.5 percent of the equity-related moderators had a statistically significant influence on effect size variance. The results of this study suggest that across most mathematics education meta-analytic studies effect size magnitude is impacted by equity-related moderators that are often absent. The researchers provide implications for meta-analytic thinking and equitable research praxis in mathematics education.

A polyomino puzzle for arithmetic practice

Recent trends in mathematics education emphasize discovery learning over drill. This has proven to be a bad idea in some cases, for the simple reason that practice is required to learn basic arithmetic skills. Drills in arithmetic skills can be made interesting through gamification. This study proposes a family of puzzles that gamify arithmetic practice. The puzzles are designed with an evolutionary algorithm forming an instance of automatic content generation. Two methods of evolutionary puzzle design are presented and discussed. The first method used transformed the problem into an almost trivial optimization. The second algorithm was designed to avoid the flaws of the first and produced a huge variety of puzzles. A hardness measure, based on the difficulty experienced by the evolutionary puzzle generator, is employed. The hardness measure is tested on a large collection of puzzles produced with the evolutionary automatic content generation system. An initial assumption, that all the pieces in the puzzle must be used to achieve a maximum score, was shown to be incorrect in puzzles located via automatic search. Two classes of puzzle are defined: those where the optimal solution uses all pieces and those where the optimal solution fails to use at least one piece. The latter sort of puzzle were found to be far more common in the search space.

Values in the mathematics classroom

Values, moral values and democratic values are attracting the attention of education researchers in general and mathematics education researchers in particular. Little research has studied pre-service teachers’ perceptions of values in the classroom, their perceptions of the relationship between the different variables of values in the classroom, as well as their relationship with the democratic society. The present research attempts to do so. Twenty-two graduate pre-service teachers who participated in ‘New trends in mathematics education’ course discussed how to cultivated values in the mathematics classroom. Moreover, they answered survey questions related to the cultivation of values in this classroom. We used a combination of deductive and inductive content analysis to characterize the pre-service teachers’ texts. The research results indicate that the pre-service teachers perceived values as encouraging students’ activity in the mathematics classroom. In addition, the pre-service teachers perceived values as encouraging specific categories of values needed as skills for the citizen in a democratic society, as creativity, critical thinking and metacognition.

Emerging Trends in Mathematics Education for People with Down Syndrome: Current Research and Future Directions

ABSTRACTIn September 2017, a group of researchers met for the first conference devoted to the singular purpose of exploring a neglected field – the learning of mathematics by individuals with Down syndrome. This special issue is a result of that first meeting and identifies three emerging trends in the mathematics education of learners with Down syndrome: the goals, content, and pedagogy. Education is central to the goal of improving an individual’s quality of life and only recently has the impact of mathematics been fully comprehended. Many researchers continue to explore the development of the concept of number and there is still much to learn. As a new development, we see that interest is now expanding to explore other areas of mathematics. We still have a long way to go to understand how best to open the doors of mathematics to all learners with Down syndrome. We conclude by offering six areas requiring immediate future research in the field of mathematics and Down syndrome.

A investigação matemática é uma tendência em educação matemática, utilizada em diferentes níveis de ensino. Nesse estudo centrou-se na Educação Infantil, Pré II (4 aos 5 anos) de uma escola municipal de Cascavel-PR. Foram aplicadas duas tarefas com características investigativas cujo objetivo era que as crianças compreendessem que na Matemática não existe um único “caminho” para a resolução de situações matemáticas e, que elas fossem capazes de explorar diversas possibilidades. As tarefas aplicadas foram criadas em encontros de estudo pelas autoras do trabalho. No momento da aplicação, os conhecimentos prévios dos educandos foram considerados. Os resultados obtidos foram satisfatórios. Alguns alunos conseguiram realizar comparação biunívoca, perceberam regularidades, compuseram e decompuseram formas geométricas. Este processo foi de grande valia, proporcionando momentos de aprendizagem e troca de experiências, tanto para as crianças quanto para as envolvidas na mediação da construção das noções matemáticas do público alvo. Estas noções devem oferecer condições de compreensão e assimilação de conceitos matemáticos. O processo de análise das atividades gerou duas categorias, um pela observação do trabalho realizado pelos alunos e outra do trabalho efetuado pela professora.

Modelagem Matemática: uma prática realizada com professoras dos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental

Este relato aborda as implicações de uma oficina desenvolvida no curso de formação continuada Tendências em Educação Matemática para os Anos Iniciais, promovido com um grupo de professoras dos anos iniciais. Especificamente, a temática explorada foi a Modelagem Matemática. Essa oficina foi realizada em dois encontros de duas horas cada um, e as práticas, planejadas e aplicadas nas turmas em que as docentes atuavam. A investigação inicial apontou que elas desconheciam a Modelagem Matemática, mas, após a oficina, passaram a utilizá-la no decorrer do ano. Ademais, enfatizaram que a oficina as motivou a utilizar essa metodologia por ser capaz de desenvolver a criatividade e a criticidade dos alunos.

Sociocultural Perspectives on the Internationalization of Research in Mathematics Education: A Survey Based on JRME, ESM, and MTL

Background:The current main research trend in mathematics education is publishing studies by Western scholars pertaining to educational issues of the world in general. but Asia is mostly overlooked. Since international comparisons show Asian students outperform others in mathematics, the imbalance should receive more attention.Material and methods:To gain insight into this disparity, this study surveys all theoretical and empirical articles published by Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME), Educational Studies in Mathematics (ESM), and Mathematical Thinking and Learning (MTL) from 2000 to 2012.Results:Issues regarding westernization vs. internationalization of mathematics education and how to build a self-identity in research in mathematics education are addressed.Conclusions:A sociocultural framework for conducting and publishing educational research in mathematics is needed to develop multicultural perspectives.

Research Trends in Mathematics Education for Young Children with disability

유아특수교육현장에서 장애유아를 위한 수학교육 연구의 활성화가 강조되는 시점에서 본 연구는 장애유아 수학교육의 연구현황을 분석하고 향후 장애유아 수학교육 분야의 발전 방향을 제안하고자 하는 목적에서 실시되었다. 이를 위하여 유아특수교육현장에서 실시된 총 16편의 장애유아 수학교육 연구를 살펴보았다. 분석대상 연구는 연구시기, 연구유형, 연구대상, 연구결과 등으로 구분하여 전체적인 동향을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 수학교육 연구에서는 단일대상과 집단비교 연구를 통한 수학교육의 효과성 증진에 관한 연구가 다수를 차지하였고, 수학교육 영역은 수 감각을 포함한 수와 연산영역을 주로 다루고 있었다. 수학능력 향상을 위한 수학활동으로는 유아주도 활동과 교사주도 활동이 고르게 적용되고 있었다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 유아특수교육현장에서 적용 가능한 수학 교육 프로그램 개발 및 연구 방안을 제시하였다.This study analyzed the current research on mathematics education for young children with disabilities in response to the current emphasis and promotion of research in the field of early childhood special education. For this purpose, 16 research studies that have focused specifically on the mathematical education of children with disabilities in the field of early childhood special education were reviewed. The general trends within this area of research, by classifying each study according to date, type, participants and result were described. As the result single subject research and group comparison research in mathematics education were currently mostly concerned with measuring the improvement and effectiveness of mathematics education. Also these research was focused on certain subject areas in mathematics, particularly numbers and operations and number sense. Child-led activities and teacher-led activities according to the investigation evenly applied across the different math activities that have been designed to improve mathematical abilities. Based on the result further development of mathematics education programs and directions of research that are appliable in the field of early childhood special education were proposed.

과학영재학교 수학 수업모형 개발

영재교육의 양적인 확장과 함께 과학영재학교의 증가를 고려할 때, 고등학생 영재를 대상으로 하는 적절한 수학 수업 방법을 모색하는 것은 중요한 문제이다. 특히 수학적 창의성을 중요한 교육 목표로 제시하는 현재의 수학 교육의 흐름에 비추어 볼 때, 과학영재학교의 수학 수업에서 교사 위주의 지식 전달 방식의 수업이 아닌 학생 중심의 토론식 수업이 필요한 시점이다. 본 연구에서는 과학영재학교의 정규 수학 수업에서 적용할 수 있는 예습 기반 토론 수업모형을 설계하고 적용하였다. 연구에 참여한 학생들은 토론을 위한 예습 활동에 많은 부담을 가지면서도 토론 활동이 기존의 강의식 수업보다 수학적으로 의미 있는 경험이었다고 평가하였다. 이러한 연구 결과로부터 예습 기반 토론 수업모형이 과학영재학교 정규 수학 수업에서 의미있게 적용될 수 있다는 시사점을 도출하였다. Considering the expansion of gifted education and the quantitative increase the Gifted Science Academy, it is important to seek the appropriate methods of mathematics teaching for gifted high school students. In particular, to reflect current trends in mathematics education that the mathematical creativity is being presented as an important educational goal, Now is the time we need student-centered discussion model for regular mathematics classes, not teacher-centered instruction in the way of knowledge transfer. In this study, class model of preparation-based discussion was designed and applied to the regular mathematics classes for the Science Academy. Students participating in this research had a lot of pressure in preparation activities for discussion, but they said that the discussion compared to traditional lecture was mathematically meaningful experience. These findings suggest the implication that class model of preparation-based discussion can be meaningfully applied to the regular mathematics class.

The study is carried out in two phases. Phase 1 is the development of the module and phase 2 is a survey research using a questionnaire. A sample of 30 mathematics teachers from three different schools in district of Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Selangor are randomly selected to participate in this study. The instrument used in this study is the pedagogical usability questionnaire. The pedagogical usability criteria are the student control, student activities, objective-oriented, application, value-added, motivation, knowledge value, flexibility and response. The data are analysed using descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, percentage, and frequency. The findings showed that the module developed has a high pedagogical usability . Findings from this study provide evidence of pedagogical impact in incorporating the latest trends in mathematics education, namely, integrating the GC tool and GSP software to maximize the mathematical and pedagogical benefits to students.

Probability constructs in preschool education and how they are taught

The teaching of Probability Theory constitutes a new trend in mathematics education internationally. The purpose of this research project was to explore the degree to which preschoolers understand key concepts of probabilistic thinking, such as sample space, the probability of an event and probability comparisons. At the same time, we evaluated an educational programme which aimed to introduce children to the basic principles of Probability Theory. The research sample consisted of 29 preschoolers (with an average age of 5 years and 4 months) from two classes of a Greek public kindergarten. The research was based on a semi-experimental, three-phase plan: the pretest, the teaching intervention and the post-test. The pretest explored the children’s conception of key probabilistic constructs and contributed to the planning of the teaching intervention. Through the post-test, we evaluated the contribution of the teaching intervention. The findings showed that pupils displayed a satisfactory level of comprehension of key probabilistic concepts and that, moreover, teaching this subject can improve their comprehension.

Instructional responsibility in mathematics education: modelling classroom teaching using Swedish data

There is an international trend in mathematics education of antiauthoritarianism, emphasising cooperative learning and students' autonomous search for knowledge. In Sweden, this is framed by ‘students' independent work’, characterised by only limited amounts of teacher–student and student–student interaction and communication and a low level of teacher responsibility for knowledge generation. Research investigating occurrence and effects of different dimensions of instructional responsibility and authority in classroom practise, however, often takes the very presence of instructional responsibility for granted. In this paper, an alternative model for description and analysis of instructional practice is proposed, which challenges the potential of the traditional division into teacher- versus student-centred modes of instruction. Theoretical starting points for conceptualising and defining mathematics classroom practices focus on instructional responsibility both for knowledge generation and for how this responsibility would be expressed in instructional practice. It was also investigated how this model corresponds with data from TIMSS 2003. The empirical results supported the possibility of adopting this alternative perspective in modes of instruction.
