Building Organizational Resilience: In the Role of Supply Chain Management

Supply chain management plays a pivotal role in the broader landscape of organizational resilience. In an era of globalization and interconnectivity, supply chains have grown increasingly complex. They extend across borders, involve multiple suppliers, and are susceptible to various risks and disruptions. Consequently, the effectiveness of supply chain management is crucial in building and maintaining an organization’s resilience (McKinsey, 2022). At the heart of this connection is the acknowledgment that a well-orchestrated supply chain can be both a source of competitive advantage and a safeguard against potential disruptions. Efficient supply chain management enables organizations to maintain uninterrupted operations, even when facing adverse conditions. This paper looks at the role of supply chain management in building supply chain resilience. The research studies previous literature, the current trends in supply chain management, and where we see the tides shifting in the future. Developing the Balanced Scorecard to Assess Investment Risks in Islamic Banks: The Yemeni Environment as a Model

this research aims to provide a Proposal Approach to developing a balanced scorecard for the use of assessing investment risks in Islamic banks. The researchers focused on the risks that are unique to Islamic banks from traditional banks, represented by the risk of the rate of return, the displaced commercial risk, the Fiduciary risk, Al- shari’a non-compliance risk, and the risk of investment in capital. To achieve this, the researchers relied on applying the Proposal Approach for three Islamic banks in Yemen due to the availability of their data in the annual reports. The results showed that there is a deficiency in the assessment of investment risks in Islamic banks with regard to the risks the Islamic banks are unique for, such as risk of the rate of return , the displaced commercial risk, the Fiduciary risk, Al- shari’a non-compliance risk, and the risk of investment in capital, It focused its attention on common risks between Islamic and commercial banks, such as credit risks, market risks, liquidity risks, and operational risks. The results also showed an effective role for the balanced scorecard in assessing investment risks in Islamic banks, which enhances the role of risk management in controlling and monitoring of the investment risks and taking appropriate procedures to reduce these risks to the acceptable levels. Analysis of the incorporation of current trends in supply chain management within curricula

ABSTRACT The field of supply chain management is changing rapidly as new practices, concepts, and technologies are regularly implemented in practice to improve supply chain performance. The Association of Supply Chain Management (ASCM) publishes an annual list of the top 10 trends in supply chain management. Academic programmes must keep their curricula current to prepare students adequately to enter this dynamic field. We conducted an international survey of supply chain management academic programmes to determine the extent to which the current trends are covered in their curricula. Results showed that many trends are covered as at least a major topic in one course in most programmes, but some trends are not as pervasive. We provide recommendations for academic programmes looking to incorporate these top trends into their curricula.

Recent trends in supply chain management of business-to-business firms: a review and future research directions

PurposeThis study aims to identify the trending topics, emerging themes and future research directions in supply chain management (SCM) through multiple source of data. The insights would be of use to academics, practitioners and policymakers to leverage latest developments in addressing current and future challenges.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a multiple source of data such as published literature and social media data including supply chain blogs and forums contents on business-to-business (B2B) firms to identify trending topics, emerging themes and future research directions in SCM. Topic modeling, a machine learning technique, is used to derive the topics and themes. Examining supply chain blogs and forums offer a valuable perspective on current issues and challenges faced by B2B firms. By analyzing the content of these online discussions, the study identifies emerging themes and topics of interest to practitioners and researchers.FindingsThe study synthesizes 1,648 published articles and more than 1.3 lakh tweets, discussions and expert views from social media, including various blogs and supply chain forums, and identifies six themes, of which three are trending, and the other three are emerging themes in the supply chain. Rather than aggregate implications, the study integrates findings from two databases and proposes a framework encompassing the drivers, processes and impacts on each theme and derives promising avenues for future research.Originality/valuePrior literature has majorly used published research articles and reports as a primary source of information to identify the trending theme and emerging topics. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study of its kind to examine the potential value of information from social media, such as blogs, websites, forums and published literature to discover new supply chain trends and themes related to B2B firms and derive encouraging possibilities for future research.

Exploring Lean Practices’ Importance in Sustainable Supply Chain Management Trends: An Empirical Study in Canadian Construction Industry

To contend with the current economic conditions, construction managers are recommended to identify sustainable construction supply chain management (CSCM) trends over the forthcoming years and adopt suitable techniques to manage construction projects strategically, tactically, and operationally. However, there is a shortage of studies exploring Lean Construction (LC) practices’ contributions to sustainable CSCM trends in the forthcoming years. Thus, this paper applies the integrated fuzzy AHP–Delphi approach to identify key sustainable CSCM trends and uses them as strategic evaluation criteria to assess and rank LC techniques. The evaluation was done by 28 experts having more than four years’ experience and expertise in lean construction and sustainable CSCM. This work also provides managerial implications by proposing a framework for LC techniques to advance sustainability throughout construction project phases.

Overview of supply chain management challenges

Purpose: The article aims at presenting possible challenges faced by supply chains in the upcoming years. Design/methodology/approach: The article employs analysis of the literature on the subject. Findings: As a result of the critical analysis of the literature, the authors have highlighted what they consider to be the most significant challenges facing supply chain managers in the coming years. These include meeting increasing customer demands for on-time delivery, the skillful use of new technologies and an increasing emphasis on environmental issues in supply chain management. These are challenges arising from changes in the business environment. The last few years, and many examples of broken supply chains, have shown that changes in the way we think about how supply chains operate are required in many areas. Trends in the environment are forcing the challenges listed above to be addressed urgently. These challenges are closely interconnected. For example, changes in purchasing behaviour are also increasingly concerned with environmental issues, which translates into the need to 'green' supply chains. Also, customer expectations for greater visibility of processes in supply chains and increasing pressure to deliver as quickly as possible (which is linked to the growth of e-commerce), are driving the need for new technologies, including automation. Research limitations/implications: The authors have focused on the most important trends and challenges and the article certainly does not cover all the topics studied. It is to some extent a subjective selection made by the authors. In addition, it should be noted that dynamic changes in the environment may influence the emergence of new challenges that are not presented in the article. Practical implications: The supply chain management challenges presented in the article may be of interest to those responsible for the operations of supply chains within companies. Originality/value: The article is a subjective indication of the most important trends in supply chain management and stems from a review of the literature on the subject. Supply Chain Demand Forecast Based on SSA-XGBoost Model

Supply chain management usually faces problems such as high empty rate of transportation, unreasonable inventory management, and large material consumption caused by inaccurate market demand forecasts. To solve these problems, using artificial intelligence and big data technology to achieve market demand forecasting and intelligent decision-making is becoming a strategic technology trend of supply chain management in the future. Firstly, this paper makes a visual analysis of the historical data of the Stock Keeping Unit (SKU); Then, the characteristic factors affecting the future demand are constructed from the storage level, product level, historical usage of SKU, etc; Finally, a supply chain demand forecasting algorithm based on SSA-XGBoost model has proposed around three aspects of feature engineering, parameter optimization and model integration, and is compared with other machine learning models. The experiment shows that the forecasting result of SSA-XGBoost forecasting model is highly consistent with the actual value, so it is of practical significance to adopt this forecasting model to solve the supply chain demand forecasting problem.

Latest Advancement of Technologies in Supply Chain Management: An Overview

Supply chain management (SCM) involves an interconnected structure of facilities that produces elements or compounds for transforming into a semifinished compound. After completion, the final compound is delivered to customers via a distribution system. Owing to ever-changing customer demands, increasingly efficient and resilient SCM is necessary, which requires support from the latest technologies. Therefore, this paper presents an overview of the latest technologies in SCM and logistics. The management of a supply chain and role of the different actors involved differ from industry to industry and company to company. Consequently, SCM has become a crucial issue to manufacturers, professionals and researchers. The latest technologies identified in this paper include radio frequency identification, vehicular ad hoc networks, the Internet of things, robotics and artificial intelligence and blockchain. Moreover, the application of the aforementioned technologies in different industries and systems is discussed to understand how the technologies impact practitioners. Although not discussed thoroughly, other recent technology trends in SCM and logistics, such as machine learning, autonomous vehicles/drones, advanced analytics, cloud logistics, supergrid logistics, anticipatory logistics, omnichannel logistics and additive manufacturing (3D printing), are also highlighted in this paper. By understanding the advancements in SCM technology, the possible direction of future innovations can be effectively planned and articulated.

Barriers and Drivers to Green Supply Chain Management Practices: Evidence from Manufacturing and Agricultural Sectors of Sri Lanka

Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) is one of the newest trends in Supply Chain Management’s (SCM) evolution. The objectives of this study are to (i) evaluate the internal and external barriers and drivers of GSCM, and (ii) make timely recommendations to implement GSCMP in manufacturing and agricultural sectors in Sri Lanka. An online questionnaire survey was conducted to examine these barriers, drivers, and recommendations for improving the GSCMP. Thirty experts have participated in the survey and the data were evaluated by descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that lack of knowledge and experience, and a lack of green professionals was the main internal and external barriers respectively. Also, top management support and green procurements were the main internal driver and external driver respectively. The findings of this study will assist the manufacturing and agricultural sectors in Sri Lanka to move on to sustainability.

Prospect of lean practices towards construction supply chain management trends

PurposeTo deal with the present situation and recover after the COVID-19 pandemic, construction firms are required to recognise the trends in construction supply chain management (CSCM) for the upcoming years and determine the appropriate practices towards the trends for the improvement of construction activities in terms of strategy, tactic and operations. This paper aims to recognise key trends in CSCM and uses these trends as strategic criteria for the evaluation and prioritisation of lean construction (LC) tools at different project phases including design and architectural engineering, planning and control, on-site construction and safety management.Design/methodology/approachThe integrated analytic hierarchy process–Delphi method is used to collect and analyse the data from construction experts to evaluate the importance levels of the CSCM trends and recommend the appropriate tools for LC practices to improve project performances.FindingsSeven key CSCM trends are identified: lean supply chain management (SCM), supply chain (SC) integration, SC standardisation, SC problem-solving, SC information-sharing, SC flexibility and SC sustainability. Based on these trends, a set of prioritised lean tools are suggested for LC practices, in which “virtual design construction” (VDC) and “last planner system” are considered as the central tools. These two LC practices can be integrated with other effective tools to support the strategic, tactical and operational targets in construction supply chain (CSC) projects.Research limitations/implicationsThis study gives the managerial implications by developing an application framework of LC practices for CSC projects. The framework promotes “VDC” as a strategic tool for the phase of design and architectural engineering and considers “last planner system” as the central LC practice for the phase of project planning and control. The framework also focuses on the improvement of efficiency in construction operations by taking into account the aspects of on-site collaboration, problem-solving, improvement and safety.Originality/valueUp to date, there is still a lack of researches in classifying and prioritising the significant LC tools for each project phase to deal with CSC issues in both breadth and depth. Thus, this study is performed to provide construction managers with the awareness of CSCM trends on which they can focus to have strategic criteria for selecting LC practices to improve CSC performances.

INDUSTRY 4.0 AND SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN

The integration of information technologies with industry has marked the beginning of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is called Industry 4.0 for short. The technologies of this era have been transforming not only the industry itself but also reshaping individuals and society. One cannot deny the very positive outcomes of Industry 4.0; however, it has also given rise to some environmental problems, including changes in climatic conditions, the running out of resources due to increasing amounts of production, industrial wastes, all of which pose irreversible threats to nature. These negative outcomes have mobilized individuals, non-governmental organizations and states requiring companies to reform the operation of supply chains in line with the sustainability principle of “meeting today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. The purpose of the current study is to present how Industry 4.0 might influence the functioning of the sustainable supply chain and the benefits it might bring. First, industrial revolutions, the concept of Industry 4.0 were introduced briefly. Then, the trends in supply chain management and with reference to sustainability and the possible contributions of Industry 4.0 to sustainability were discussed.

Sustainable supply chain management trends in world regions: A data-driven analysis

This study proposes a data-driven analysis that describes the overall situation and reveals the factors hindering improvement in the sustainable supply chain management field. The literature has presented a summary of the evolution of sustainable supply chain management across attributes. Prior studies have evaluated different parts of the supply chain as independent entities. An integrated systematic assessment is absent in the extant literature and makes it necessary to identify potential opportunities for research direction. A hybrid of data-driven analysis, the fuzzy Delphi method, the entropy weight method and fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory is adopted to address uncertainty and complexity. This study contributes to locating the boundary of fundamental knowledge to advance future research and support practical execution. Valuable direction is provided by reviewing the existing literature to identify the critical indicators that need further examination. The results show that big data, closed-loop supply chains, industry 4.0, policy, remanufacturing, and supply chain network design are the most important indicators of future trends and disputes. The challenges and gaps among different geographical regions is offered that provides both a local viewpoint and a state-of-the-art advanced sustainable supply chain management assessment.

Sustainable supply chain management towards disruption and organizational ambidexterity: A data driven analysis.

Balancing sustainability and disruption of supply chains requires organizational ambidexterity. Sustainable supply chains prioritize efficiency and economies of scale and may not have sufficient redundancy to withstand disruptive events. There is a developing body of literature that attempts to reconcile these two aspects. This study gives a data-driven literature review of sustainable supply chain management trends toward ambidexterity and disruption. The critical review reveals temporal trends and geographic distribution of literature. A hybrid of data-driven analysis approach based on content and bibliometric analyses, fuzzy Delphi method, entropy weight method, and fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory is used on 273 keywords and 22 indicators obtained based on the experts’ evaluation. The most important indicators are identified as supply chain agility, supply chain coordination, supply chain finance, supply chain flexibility, supply chain resilience, and sustainability. The regions show different tendencies compared with others. Asia and Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa are the regions needs improvement, while Europe and North America show distinct apprehensions on supply chain network design. The main contribution of this review is the identification of the knowledge frontier, which then leads to a discussion of prospects for future studies and practical industry implementation.

Supply Chain Management and Its Influence on the Performance of Pharmaceutical Companies

This study aims to investigate the trends in supply chain management for analyzing the performance of pharmaceutical companies in Thailand. Supply chain management is reflected through SCM1 which indicates the supply chain production flexibility as measured through five items, whereas SCM2 represents the supply chain sourcing flexibility as observed through five items too. For measuring the business performance, three items were added in the study. For the data collection purpose, we have focused on the questionnaire survey technique based on the stated items of both supply chain dimension and performance measures too. Overall data is recorded through a scaling method of five points, where one shows strongly disagree and five shows strongly agree about a particular statement. A sample of 247 respondents of different suppliers and key individuals who were somehow engage with supply chain of pharmaceutical companies were targeted for the data collection. Additionally, our results have considered the age, gender, and working experience as main demographic factors. For data analysis, descriptive results through frequency distribution of the respondents and cross tabulation of the demographic factors were provided and explained. In addition, our study has observed the factors loadings through confirmatory factor analysis for checking the internal reliability of each of the item, whereas overall conceptual framework is observed through structural equation modelling. Results of the study show that there is a significant and positive impact of supply chain production flexibility and supply chain sourcing flexibility on the performance measures of pharmaceutical companies as working in Thailand. As per originality, it was found that very little research has expatriate the supply chain flexibly in terms of production and outsourcing as a performance determinants of pharma industry were observed. Therefore, it is stated that present research is a significant contribution in the literature for various stakeholders. However, future studies may incorporate the other supply chain dynamics like postponement flexibility, key types of the suppliers (Captain category and secondary suppliers) for examining the business performance in pharma sector.

Supply chain and logistics controller – two promising professions for supporting transparency in supply chain management

PurposeThis paper aims to identify the occupational profiles of a logistics and a supply chain (SC) controller, both promising SC professions, examining the required competences and tasks undertaken while taking into account current trends in supply chain management and its wider dimensions.Design/methodology/approachThe study used a content analysis based on job advertisements for the position of logistics controller and SC controller. The collected material allowed the construction of an occupational competence mix model in the style of Cheetham and Chivers for the logistics and SC controller, and the identification of the level of competence of both professions, using the model proposed by Czapla. In addition, the analysis of the data was supplemented by use of the Anova test and a radar chart.FindingsThe SC and logistics controllers have a high degree of similarity in both the meta and core competences areas. Similarities also occur in the case of the analysed groups of tasks undertaken by these professions. Tasks in the areas of “definition” and “maintaining” prevail. The SC controller and the logistics controller are considered “engaged inspirers” because they have reached this level of professional competence. Both these professions can ensure an effective, sustainable and transparent SC through direct cooperation with the SC manager and/or logistics manager.Research limitations/implicationsThis study uses a content analysis based on job advertisements addressed to the German market. These job advertisements are standardized, and therefore, provide only a general outline of the competences and tasks of the SC and logistics controllers.Practical implicationsThe study provides information to practitioners by identifying the competences and tasks assigned to the SC and logistics controllers that are needed to improve the efficiency and transparency of the SC and its management. The research is an incentive for people involved in education to adapt changes in curricula in the business (accounting, controlling and logistics) and engineering (related to logistics) fields of study by creating courses based on SC controlling or/and logistics controlling.Originality/valueThe study shows the current, necessary changes for SC professionals (e.g. the appointment of a SC controller and/or logistics controller) resulting from changes in business and the challenges for SC management (e.g. transparency and sustainability).

The investigation of research trends in supply chain management: an integrated method of meta-methodology and co-word analysis

The present study aimed to identify the most important achievement in the area of the supply chain (SC) during the past two decades using meta-methodology, co-word analysis, as well as systematic review and in-depth analysis. The results indicated the sustainability and resilience of SC are hot topics. Therefore, the need for qualitative and longitudinal studies and the use of methods such as ethnography or historical analysis are understood well in this respect. The current study had a holistic approach to SC, and thus simultaneously covered the relevant areas and provided an appropriate strategy for identifying the missing circles in the SC field using the meta-study and scientometric instruments. In general, the present study identified the research gaps in this field, and other studies can use them as a guideline in order to choose future research areas.

Promising research fields in supply chain risk management and supply chain resilience and the gaps concerning human factors: A literature review.

Recent studies concerning supply chain management have shown that topics such as supply chain risk management (SCRM) and supply chain resilience (SCRes) are the new trends in supply chain management. Initial studies in the early 2000s developed frameworks to identify, measure and mitigate risks and assess/evaluate the degree of resilience of a company or supply chain. Recently, a large variety of studies has emerged, including more conceptual and review studies as well as more sophisticated, quantitative studies. However, studies on human-related factors are still lacking, and there is no systematic method to answer questions such as "What literature is available concerning human factors related to SCRM and SCRes?", "Which human factors contribute to SCRes?" and "Which human factor can amplify SC Risks?" The main goal of this paper is to conduct a systematic literature review to identify human factors that impact supply chain resilience and supply chain risk management. This study was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method. The objective of using this review protocol is to ensure that the review has the minimum amount of bias due to research expectations. This study highlighted a summary of human-related risk and resilience factors as well as a discussion about these preliminary findings. As our main conclusion, we highlight that human factors may generate significant risks in the supply chain, nevertheless, there are other human factors that must be nourished to obtain SCRes.

BIM contributions to construction supply chain management trends: an exploratory study in Canada

Because of thin academic literature in exploring BIM (Building Information Modelling) contributions to construction supply chain management (SCM) trends, this paper uses the structured Delphi technique to recognise key trends in construction SCM as well as assess contributions of recent BIM systems to the trends. This study also explores the barriers and enablers that impact the BIM contributions to SC (supply chain) trends associated to the categories of governance, SC issues, expertise and training, benefits and costs and demand. The results show that, due to shortcomings of current status, BIM systems have moderate supports to operational and tactical issues (process standardisation, problem-solving, and information sharing) rather than strategic business trends (integration, flexibility, SC drivers, further outsourcing, risk sharing or long-term trust). In order to get over the barriers, SC actors are recommended to follow the systematic process to achieve a higher BIM capability and the greater SC integration. The study is expected to have a theoretical contribution to the study field with the results related to BIM supports to SCM trends, especially in the context of the Canadian construction industry.

An ISM approach for the barrier analysis in implementing sustainable supply chain management

PurposeSustainability has been on the executive agenda for years and it is now one of the fastest growing supply chain management trends. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the barriers for the adoption and implementation of the sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) concept.Design/methodology/approachThis study has been divided into two phases such as identification of barriers and qualitative analysis. First, to identify the most influential barriers, the authors offer a systematic literature review, taking 188 papers published from 2010 to November 2016 into account. The investigation phase led to the selection of 15 barriers based on the literature in consultation with industrial experts and academicians. Second, the interpretive structural modeling qualitative analysis was used to find out the mutual influences between the 15 barriers by a survey.FindingsFurther, the authors propose and illustrate the cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification analysis to test a framework that extrapolates SSCM barriers and their relationships. “Inadequate information technology implementation” has been identified as the most important barrier that may force organizations to implement SSCM practices to ensure their business sustainability.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors presented some limitations in their research in some fields which could allow new researchers and practitioners to conduct the future research to grow in different dimensions.Practical implicationsPractitioners or policymakers usually are not familiar with these types of research works; that is why most of these surveys remain theoretical and conceptual. Future investigation needs to be done in practical application domain instead of merely giving opinions.Originality/valueBased on the authors’ research, the researchers have more attention to work in conceptual analysis due to other fields, but the authors believe that even with the implementation of SSCM, many remarkable areas still exist for future research which could help in development.
