A DEM Study on Bearing Behavior of Floating Geosynthetic-Encased Stone Column in Deep Soft Clays

The use of geosynthetic-encased stone columns has been proven to be an economical and effective method for soft soil foundation treatment. This method is widely used in civil engineering projects at home and abroad. When the geosynthetic-encased stone columns are applied to deep soft clays, they are in a floating state. The load-bearing deformation mechanism of geosynthetic-encased stone columns has changed. The interaction between the aggregates, geogrid, and soil is worth studying, especially at the bottom of the column. In this paper, the discrete element method is used to simulate a floating geosynthetic-encased stone column with a 280 mm encasement depth in deep soft clays. The load-bearing deformation characteristics and mesoscopic mechanism of the floating geosynthetic-encased stone column are studied. The results show that there are large vertical and radial stresses in the top region. Moreover, the porosity and sliding fraction of aggregates in this region increase with settlement, and the coordination number decreases with settlement. The vertical and radial stresses of the soil near the column body are not affected much by the column body. When the encasement depth exceeds 280 mm, the bearing capacity of the FGESC does not increase much. The encasement depth controls the failure mode of the floating geosynthetic-encased stone column. As the encasement depth increases, the failure mode of the floating geosynthetic-encased stone column gradually transitions from swelling deformation to penetration failure.

A Siphon Drainage Method for Consolidation of Soft Soil Foundation

The drainage consolidation method can reduce porosity to consolidate soft soils. In this study, a novel siphon drainage method is used as the drainage consolidation method to lower the groundwater level. Compared to other drainage methods, the siphon drainage method is power-free, environmental-friendly, and highly efficient. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the feasibility of the siphon drainage method on soft soil treatment. In addition, the effects of soil permeability and drainage hole spacing on its application efficiency have been studied. The results show that: (a) The siphon drainage method can accelerate the consolidation by lowering the groundwater level; (b) The larger the soil permeability is, the faster the pore water pressure decreases; (c) Adopting 1 m hole-spacing in the siphon drainage is much more efficient than methods which have a 2 m hole-spacing. In addition, the siphon drainage method is proven the effective in soft soil foundation treatment by a field test in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province.

Study on soft soil foundation treatment technology in industrial building construction

Because of its unstable structure, SSF (soft soil foundation) will appear obvious deformation after being subjected to external force, which will cause the foundation settlement of buildings and the overall life of buildings will be affected to some extent. With a large number of construction projects, land resources are increasingly scarce, and a large number of SSF will be used as construction land foundations. The base material in soft soil has many physical and chemical properties and active properties different from other soft soil materials. Under the action of strong external pressure, the SSF of high-speed tunnel is easy to bend. Because there are many defects in SSF, there are great security risks in industrial buildings, so it is necessary to use SSF treatment technology to change the problems in SSF during construction. By analyzing the characteristics of SSF, this paper focuses on the importance of SSF treatment and discusses the application of common foundation treatment technology in industrial building construction.

Construction parameters of graded sand-gravel foundation on seismic response law of nuclear safety grade underground corridor

The treatment of soft soil foundation under nuclear safety grade corridors with graded sand and gravel materials has a good development prospect. It is of great engineering value to explore the influence of construction parameters of graded sand and gravel foundation on the seismic response of gallery structures. Taking the safety grade underground corridor of a nuclear power plant as the engineering background, the equivalent linear method is used to consider the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of graded sand and gravel. The energy transfer boundary is applied at the truncation boundary to simulate the dissipation effect of scattered wave fluctuation energy and the ground motion input. The thicknessless contact element is introduced to consider the contact effect between the corridor structure and the graded sand and gravel foundation, so as to establish the calculation model of the dynamic interaction between the graded sand and gravel foundation and the corridor structure. Furthermore, the influence of the relative compactness and the foundation treatment depth on the seismic response of the corridor structure is studied, and the calculation results of the acceleration response spectrum and relative displacement of the corridor structure are analyzed. The calculation results show that the two construction parameters have different degrees of influence on the seismic response of corridor structure. The research results can provide reference for the engineering design and construction of underground corridors, and provide technical support for the application of graded gravel materials in soft soil foundation treatment.

Comparative Study on Field Tests of Two Kinds of Shallow Treatment of Soft Soil Foundation

Through the vacuum preloading test with three different arrangements and the in-situ curing treatment at different depths, the treatment effect reached the expectation, indicating that both the vacuum preloading method and the in-situ curing method can achieve good reinforcement effect. Among them, the local curing method has remarkable effect on treating waste engineering mud, and its bearing capacity is far beyond expectation, which can be used as the foundation of high-grade highway. After the test, it is found that the real air filtration test area can also improve the treatment effect by reducing the distance between drainage plates, and the local curing treatment can further optimize the admixture content to achieve better reinforcement effect and further reduce the project cost. For the construction site with general bearing capacity requirements, vacuum filter tube or air pipe can be used to meet the requirements. For sites requiring higher bearing capacity, true air filter tube treatment can be used, and higher grade roadbed can be used in situ curing treatment.

Machine-Learning-Based Road Soft Soil Foundation Treatment and Settlement Prediction Method

In order to effectively predict the settlement of soft soil foundation, improve the accuracy of road soft soil foundation settlement prediction, and improve the safety of the project, this paper proposes an optimized SVM-AR model and discusses the application scope of the SVM model and the time series AR model, respectively. The SVM-AR model is proposed by combining the respective advantages of the two types of models. Firstly, the prediction method of foundation settlement is analyzed and studied, and then the improved ABC algorithm is used to optimize the SVM model. Secondly, the optimized SVM model is combined with the AR model, the ABC-SVM model is used to predict the trend settlement, and the AR model is used to predict the random settlement and then combined to obtain the predicted settlement. The example verification shows that SVM-AR is more accurate than the SVM model prediction results and better reflects the settlement process of highway soft soil foundation.
