Performance parametric formulation of carbon fiber-reinforced composite locking bone implant plates based on finite-element analysis.

The treatment of Giant Cell Tumor (GCT) in the distal radius poses challenges due to the intricate anatomical features of the bone. It often necessitates the use of long implant plates or the interconnection of multiple short plates after tumor excision. However, the deployment of metal plates may increase the risk of screw loosening and various complications. To address these challenges, this study proposes the adoption of carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK (CFRP) as the base material. As a unique strategy, performance parameters (PP) were developed to compare CFRP implant plates with a Ti-6Al-4V plate using the Finite-element Method. The focus was on four elements: the screw axial force, bone growth, callus formation, and bone resorption. The investigation into the screw axial force involved analyzing the internal force of the screw. The remaining parameters were evaluated using the stress, strain, or elastic energy induced in the bones. The findings showed that the second screw endured the largest screw axial force, measuring 10.16 N under a 90-degree 10-N loading at the translocated bone. The model without a callus exerted a significantly greater force on the screw than the model with a callus, leading to screw loosening in the early stage of treatment. The maximum PP, reached 1.62, was achieved with an angle-ply [456/-456] laminate, featuring a weighting fraction of 0.7 for bone growth and 0.1 for the other parameters. This study provides a generalized methodology for assessing the performances of CFRP implants and offers guidelines for future development in composite implant plate technology.

Current Concepts in the Treatment of Giant Cell Tumor of Bone: An Update.

Curettage is recommended for the treatment of Campanacci stages 1-2 giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) in the extremities, pelvis, sacrum, and spine, without preoperative denosumab treatment. In the distal femur, bone chips and plate fixation are utilized to reduce damage to the subchondral bone and prevent pathological fracture, respectively. For local recurrence, re-curettage may be utilized when feasible. En bloc resection is an option for very aggressive Campanacci stage 3 GCTB in the extremities, pelvis, sacrum, and spine, combined with 1-3 doses of preoperative denosumab treatment. Denosumab monotherapy once every 3 months is currently the standard strategy for inoperable patients and those with metastatic GCTB. However, in case of tumor growth, a possible malignant transformation should be considered. Zoledronic acid appears to be as effective as denosumab; nevertheless, it is a more cost-effective option. Therefore, zoledronic acid may be an alternative treatment option, particularly in developing countries. Surgery is the mainstay treatment for malignant GCTB.

Integrating coaxial electrospinning and 3D printing technologies for the development of biphasic porous scaffolds enabling spatiotemporal control in tumor ablation and osteochondral regeneration

The osteochondral defects (OCDs) resulting from the treatment of giant cell tumors of bone (GCTB) often present two challenges for clinicians: tumor residue leading to local recurrence and non-healing of OCDs. Therefore, this study focuses on developing a double-layer PGPC-PGPH scaffold using shell-core structure nanofibers to achieve “spatiotemporal control” for treating OCDs caused by GCTB. It addresses two key challenges: eliminating tumor residue after local excision and stimulating osteochondral regeneration in non-healing OCD cases. With a shell layer of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX)/gelatin (GT) and inner cores containing chondroitin sulfate (CS)/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) or hydroxyapatite (HA)/PLGA, coaxial electrospinning technology was used to create shell-core structured PpIX/GT-CS/PLGA and PpIX/GT-HA/PLGA nanofibers. These nanofibers were shattered into nano-scaled short fibers, and then combined with polyethylene oxide and hyaluronan to formulate distinct 3D printing inks. The upper layer consists of PpIX/GT-CS/PLGA ink, and the lower layer is made from PpIX/GT-HA/PLGA ink, allowing for the creation of a double-layer PGPC-PGPH scaffold using 3D printing technique. After GCTB lesion removal, the PGPC-PGPH scaffold is surgically implanted into the OCDs. The sonosensitizer PpIX in the shell layer undergoes sonodynamic therapy to selectively damage GCTB tissue, effectively eradicating residual tumors. Subsequently, the thermal effect of sonodynamic therapy accelerates the shell degradation and release of CS and HA within the core layer, promoting stem cell differentiation into cartilage and bone tissues at the OCD site in the correct anatomical position. This innovative scaffold provides temporal control for anti-tumor treatment followed by tissue repair and spatial control for precise osteochondral regeneration.

Narlumosbart: First Approval.

Narlumosbart () is a recombinant, fully human, anti-receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand (RANKL) IgG4 monoclonal antibody being developed by CSPC Pharmaceutical and its wholly owned subsidiary Shanghai Jinmante Biotechnology for the treatment of giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB), bone metastases from solid tumours and osteoporosis. The RANK/RANKL signalling pathway plays a pivotal role in osteoclastogenesis and in the pathogenesis of GCTB. Narlumosbart specifically binds to RANKL and blocks the interaction of RANKL with RANK, thus inhibiting osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption by osteoclasts. In September 2023, narlumosbart received conditional first approval in China for the treatment of adults with GCTB that is unresectable or when surgical resection would result in severe functional disability. Clinical studies of narlumosbart for bone metastases, postmenopausal osteoporosis and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis are underway in China. This article summarizes the milestones in the development of narlumosbart leading to this first approval for the treatment of adults with GCTB.

Non-Vascularized Fibular Bone Graft for Giant Cell Tumor of the Distal Ulna: A Case Report

Abstract: Cases of bone giant cell tumors (GCT) are rarely found, generally benign and locally aggressive tumors. Surgical resection is the universal standard for treatment of bone GCT. Non vascularized fibular graft (NVFG) is useful in the reconstruction of skeletal defects, especially in cases of scarred and avascular recipient sites and patient with tumor surrounded by poor tissue condition. We report a 53-year-old woman, with a lump in her left hand for three years. X-ray examination revealed a mass with firm border and regular edge that reached the epiphysis expansively with thinning of the cortex in the distal region of the left ulna. Tumor excision was performed with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) and fibular bone graft. To date, GCT is one of the most obscure and intensively examined bone tumors, and its histological images do not predict the clinical outcome. Moreover, many unanswered questions regard to the treatment and prognosis without any consensus regarding the ideal treatment selection. NVFG osteosynthesis shows encouraging results, and adequate therapy, wound care and patient compliance affect the patient’s outcome. In conclusion, NVFG and internal fixation are effective options for post tumor excision, and osteosynthesis has encouraging result. Preliminary Results of Preoperative Planning Using 3D Printing and Augmented Reality in Cryotherapy Treatment of Giant Cell Tumor of Bone-CRIO2AR Project.

Giant Cell Tumor of Bone is a benign tumor with high local aggressive expansion, which, in rare cases, spreads metastasis. Surgical treatment, which often consists of wide curettage to reduce recurrence risk, can lower the quality of life for those affected. Along with aggressive surgery, adjuvant intraoperative techniques have been implemented such as PMMA and cryotherapy. One of the most widely used cryotherapy techniques involves the use of probes to generate ice balls, which have been scientifically shown to have various impacts on the tumor. Although this has been acknowledged, no one has yet tested a way to accurately plan the positioning of cryotherapy probes before surgery, according to the research conducted by the authors. CRIO2AR is a randomized clinical prospective ongoing study by which it will be experimented via preoperative planning of ice probes placement using AR and 3D printing technologies. By studying a single clinical case with these technologies, the surgeon gains better awareness of patient's anatomy and tumor localization. Preliminary results are shown in the article. The first results are confirming that these technologies are applicable in clinical practice. Secondly, preoperative planning is proving to be reliable, easily replicable, and useful for the surgeon.

Investigation of Giant Cell Tumor of Bone and Tissue Engineering Approaches for the Treatment of Giant Cell Tumor of Bone.

Primary bone tumors such as Ewing sarcoma, osteosarcoma, and chondrosarcoma, secondary bone tumors developed from progressive malignancies, and metastasized bone tumors are more prevalent and studied descriptively through biology and medical research. Less than 0.2% of cancer diagnoses are caused by rare bone-originating tumors, which despite being rare are particularly difficult due to their high death rates and substantial disease burden. A giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is an intramurally invasive but rare and benign type of bone tumor, which seldom metastasizes. The most often prescribed medication for GCTB is Denosumab, a RANKL (receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand) inhibitor. Because pharmaceutical drug companies rely on two-dimensional and animal models, current approaches for investigating the diverse nature of tumors are insufficient. Cell line based medication effectiveness and toxicity studies cannot predict tumor response to antitumor medicines. It has already been investigated in detail why molecular pathways do not reproduce in vitro, a phenomenon known as flat biology. Due to physiological differences between human beings and animals, animal models do not succeed in identifying side effects of the treatment, emulating metastatic growth, and establishing the link between cancer and the immune system. This review summarizes and discusses GCTB, the disease, its cellular composition, various bone tumor models, and their properties and utilization in research. As a result, this study delves deep into in vitro testing, which is vital for scientists and physicians in various fields, including pharmacology, preclinical investigations, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine.

A new joint reconstruction technique in the treatment of giant cell tumors around the knee: Structural allograft and unicompartmental arthroplasty.

The long-term prognosis of patients who underwent unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) with a structural allograft or hemiarticular allograft transplantation to treat giant cell tumors (GCTs) around the knee and the prosthesis survival rate were analyzed. We retrospectively reviewed 73 patients who were diagnosed with GCTs around the knee and underwent surgery to restore joint function from 2000 to 2015. Patients were divided into two groups according to the surgical procedure used for functional knee reconstruction: hemiarticular allograft transplantation or structural allograft and UKA. The Knee Society Score (KSS) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) were used to analyze postoperative knee function between the two groups. The Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) classification system was used to evaluate the progression of osteoarthritis. The incidence of complications and the prosthesis survival rate were also investigated. Patients who underwent UKA to treat GCT demonstrated significantly improved knee function. The rate of an excellent or good KSS was significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.041 at the 1-year follow-up, p = 0.033 at the last follow-up). The proportion of severe cases according to WOMAC in the two groups was also different (p = 0.030 at the 1-year follow-up, p = 0.021 at the last follow-up). According to the K-L grade of unaffected compartments, UKA better prevented the progression of osteoarthritis (p = 0.034). Patients with GCTs around the knee could benefit from UKA. In addition to providing better knee function and range of motion, UKA could also slow the progression of osteoarthritis in the knee joint. This new surgical method could meet the needs of patients wishing to preserve joint integrity and favorable joint function.

Central giant cell granuloma in a 10-year-old girl: microsurgical reconstruction with a microvascularized fibula flap

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) are rare, proliferative, benign bone tumors characterized by an abundance of multinucleated giant cells. It affects children and young adults, predominantly women, in the second and third decade of life, it’s commonly found in the mandible. The main treatment for giant cell tumors is surgical excision with free histologic margins; in case of mandibular involvement, the use of a vascularized composite bone flap represents the standard for a functional reconstruction. We present the case of a female patient in the first decade of life with a CGCG of aggressive type, located in the ascending branch and right mandibular angle. En bloc resection of the lesion was performed, with a 2-cm margin and mandibular reconstruction at the same surgical time with a free microvascularized flap from the right fibula. CGCG are rare and infrequent tumors during childhood. Due to its uncertain behavior, it is important to rule out other differential diagnoses prior to definitive treatment.

Giant Cell Tumors of the Synovial Sheaths (TCGGS) of the Hand: About 15 Cases

Giant cell tumor is a benign tumor mainly affecting the epiphyses of the long bones. It mainly affects young adults between the ages of 20 and 40. Its origin remains uncertain. It is a purely lytic and usually aggressive tumor that destroys bone, possibly even leading to a fracture. Occasionally, there may be invasion of the soft tissues. Axial computed tomography or magnetic resonance are very useful in determining tumor extension. The differential diagnosis mainly includes lesions affecting the epiphyseal regions of the bones such as chondroblastoma and clear cell chondrosarcoma. The treatment of giant cell tumor is first and usually surgical. It consists of an extensive curettage under direct vision through a large bone window. Curettage can be made more effective by using physicochemical means such as phenol or liquid nitrogen to sterilize the tumor bed and reduce the risk of local recurrence. The risk of recurrence is significant, even with modern means of curettage and is typically around 30%. Large resection of the diseased bone segment is indicated for regions where it does not cause significant functional deficit. The risk of recurrence is then much lower. Although presenting a benign appearance on histopathological examination, “benign” pulmonary metastases can sometimes be seen. Recent studies suggest the presence of chromosomal abnormalities or the expression of certain genes, which could explain the behavior, sometimes even malignant, of these tumors.

An improved total en bloc spondylectomy for L5 vertebral giant cell tumor through a single-stage posterior approach.

Although total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) is strongly recommended for spinal giant cell tumor (GCT), it is extremely difficult to excise a L5 neoplasm intactly through the single-stage posterior approach. Given the risk of neurological and vascular injury, intralesional curettage (IC) is usually recommended for the treatment of L5 GCT. In this study, we presented our experience with the use of an improved TES to treat L5 GCT through the single-stage posterior approach. This study included 20 patients with L5 GCT who received surgical treatment in our department between September 2010 and April 2021. Of them, seven patients received improved TES without iliac osteotomy, and the other 13 patients received IC (n = 8), sagittal en bloc resection (n = 1), TES with iliac osteotomy (n = 3), and TES with radicotomy (n = 1) as control. The mean operative time was 331.43 ± 92.95min for improved TES group and 365.77 ± 85.17min for the control group (p = 0.415), with the mean blood loss of 1142.86 ± 340.87ml vs. 1969.23 ± 563.30ml (p = 0.002). Postoperative treatment included bisphosphonates in nine patients and denosumab in 12 patients including one patient who changed from bisphosphonates to denosumab. Three patients who received IC experienced local recurrence, and no relapse was observed in improved TES group. Single-stage posterior TES for L5 GCT was previously considered impossible. In this study, we presented our experience with the use of an improved surgical technique for L5 TES through the single-stage posterior approach, which has proved to be superior to the conventional procedures in terms of blood loss control and complication and recurrence rates. Bioactive Glass Inhibits Tumor Development from Giant Cell Tumor of Bone-Derived Neoplastic Stromal Cells in a Chicken Chorioallantoic Membrane Assay.

Tumor recurrence is a major problem during the treatment of giant cell tumors of bone (GCTB). We recently identified tumor cell-specific cytotoxic effects of bioactive glasses (BGs) toward neoplastic stromal cells derived from GCTB tissue (GCTSCs) in vitro. Since these data indicated a promising role of BGs in the adjuvant treatment of GCTBs, we aimed to investigate the transferability of the in vitro data into the more complex in vivo situation in the current study. We first analyzed the cytotoxicity of three different BGs in vitro by WST-1 assay after co-cultivation with primary GCTSC cell lines. The effects of BGs on tumor engraftment and growth were analyzed by chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assays and subsequent quantification of tumor take rates and tumor volumes. In vitro, all tested BGs displayed a cytotoxic effect on GCTSCs that was dependent on BG composition, concentration, and particle size. Comparable effects could be observed within the in vivo environment resulting in reduced tumor take rates and tumor volumes in BG-treated samples. These data indicate a possible clinical application of BGs in the context of GCTB therapy, mediating a reduction of recurrence rates with the simultaneous promotion of bone regeneration.

The Efficacy of Bisphosphonate in the Treatment of Giant Cell Tumour of the Bone: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Anti-osteoclastic mechanism of Bisphosphonate (BP) is crucial to treat Giant Cell Tumour of the Bone (GCTB), however no established guidelines of its use have been published. This systematic review and meta-analysis is the first to summarise recent clinical studies on the subject. A systematic search was performed based on PRISMA guidelines for clinical trials of BP administration in GCTB. Baseline data including BP regimen, dose and timing was summarised. The primary outcomes assessed were recurrence rate, metastases, survival rate, functional outcome, clinical outcome, radiological outcome, and adverse effect. We identified 8 articles from 2008-2020. Most studies administer 4mg of Zoledronic acid post-operatively, with five studies mentioning pre-operative administration and six studies describing post-operative administration. There was a total of 181 GCTB cases analysed in this study. The BP group presented lower recurrence rate than control group (three studies; Odds Ratio [OR] 0.15; 95% Confidence Interval [CI], 0.05 - 0.43; p<0.05; heterogeneity, I2=0%). As for survival rate, BP group is comparable to control group (two studies; OR 1.67; 95% CI, 0.06 - 48.46; p=0.77; heterogeneity, I2=65%). Bisphosphonate therapy offers satisfactory recurrence rate, functional outcome, clinical outcome, radiological outcome, survival rate and metastases rate in patients with GCTB, with minimal adverse effects. Pre- and post-operative administration of bisphosphonates in combination might be the most beneficial in minimalising the recurrence rate.

Role of Denosumab in the Management of Giant Cell Tumor, a Cross Sectional Study

<strong>Background:</strong> Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a benign lesion which is characterized by presence of multinucleated osteoclasts type giant cells. Nuclear factor kappa B (RANKL) serves as the trigger factor for osteoclasts cells formation. Although surgery is the primary treatment for GCT of bone but recurrence remains the concern. Therefore, the development of denosumab, a monoclonal antibody for treating GCT for both primary and recurrent disease cases. The present study aims to show the role of denosumab along with surgery when given as neo-adjuvant drug to patients of GCT for their treatment. <strong>Methodology:</strong> A total of 23 patients diagnosed with GCT were included in this study from January 2016–December 2019 and all of these patients had received neo adjuvant denosumab dose of 120 mg SC on day 0, 15, 30 &amp; 45. All patients were treated at the section of Orthopedics, department of surgery, Aga Khan University hospital, Karachi. Other benign lesions were excluded from the study. <strong>Results:</strong> Out of 23 patients we had 12 (52.2%) males and 11 (47.8%) females. The mean age of our patients was 34±13.8 years and mean follow up duration of all patients was 20.5 ± 10.7 months. There were 15 (65.2%) primary cases of GCT while 8 (34.8%) were recurrent cases. In 8 (34.8%) of the cases primary site of lesion was distal femur followed by 7(30.4%) proximal tibia cases and 3(13%) distal radius cases. In surgical procedure 20 (87%) patients underwent wide margin excision and only 3 (13%) had intralesional curettage. Reconstruction was performed in 21 patients which consist of bone grafting in 9 patients and mega prosthesis insertion in 12 patients. Only two patients had no reconstruction. On final histopathology, there was no residual GCT and we observed no denosumab induced adverse effects. Post-operative complications included wound infection and peri prosthetic infection in 3 patients. On follow-up we had 4(17.4%) cases of recurrence that were offered revision surgery while 19 (82.6%) were disease free. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> Denosumab has shown successful results in treating patients with GCT along with surgical intervention and it can be a best option for treating recurrent disease as well. <strong>Highlights</strong><ul><li>Giant cell tumor of bones is aggressive non-cancerous tumor.</li><li>Denosumab, a human monoclonal antibody that inhibits RANK-L, has shown good results in its management along with surgery in neo adjuvant setting.</li><li>In our study, most of the patients underwent wide margin excision followed by few treated intralesional curettage ins surgical management.</li><li>Our study reported few cases of recurrence after neoadjuvant Denosumab treatment showing its efficacy inthe disease management.</li></ul> <strong>Research registration no:</strong> researchregistry4695

A case report on patient with giant cell tumor of the distal ulna

Abstract Giant cell tumors, however benign, are locally aggressive bone tumors with a high recurrence rate. The distal radius, distal femur, proximal tibia, and humerus are the most typically affected. A bone giant-cell tumor (GCT) in the distal ulna is extremely uncommon. Wide excision is typically advised in such cases, and a long chunk of the distal ulna may need to be removed. In such cases, the conventional treatment for GCT is distal ulna resection.

Treatment of giant cell tumor of bone using bone grafting and cementation with versus without gel foam

ABSTRACT Background Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a benign locally aggressive tumor that constitutes 20% of the body's benign bone tumors. Most of the GCTs exhibit a typical epiphyseal location that shows a tendency for significant bone destruction and local recurrence. We aimed to assess the functional and oncological outcomes of GCT patients treated with bone grafting and cementation with or without gel foam. Materials and methods This prospective study included 40 patients presented at El Hadara University Hospital with GCT of bone around the knee from January 2017 to January 2022 treated by bone graft and cementation. Twenty cases were treated with gel foam (Group I) and 20 cases were treated without gel foam (Group II) through random allocation without selection. Recurrence was assessed as progressive lysis of 5 mm at the bone cement interface. Functional outcomes were assessed using the musculoskeletal tumor society score (MSTS) after a period of minimum 30 months. Results In Group I, 18 patients (90%) had excellent results (range 24 and 30) according to MSTS and two patients (10%) had good results (range 18 and 23), while in Group II, 16 patients (80%) had excellent results and four patients (20%) had good results. No patients were graded as having fair or poor results. Twenty patients (100%) had satisfactory results, and no patients (0%) had unsatisfactory results. The overall recurrence rate was about 15%. Conclusion Reconstruction of GCT of bone with sandwich technique offers good option as joint preserving surgery. Most of the patients get benefit in terms of better quality of life and good function regardless of age and gender. Subchondral bone grafting reduces the effect of heat on articular cartilage, but longer follow-up is required. There is no benefit of gel foam addition in terms of function or oncological outcome.

Cytotoxic Effects of Common Irrigation Solutions on Chondrosarcoma and Giant Cell Tumors of Bone.

Irrigation is commonly used as an adjuvant treatment during the intralesional curettage of bone tumors. The goal of the present study was to analyze the in vitro cytotoxicity of commonly used irrigation solutions on chondrosarcoma and giant cell tumor (GCT) cells as there is no consensus on which solution leads to the greatest amount of cell death. An in vitro evaluation was performed by exposing human GCT and human chondrosarcoma cell lines to 0.9% saline solution, sterile water, 70% ethanol, 3% hydrogen peroxide, 0.05% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), and 0.3% povidone iodine solutions independently for 2 and 5 minutes. A low-cytotoxicity control (LCC) and a high-cytotoxicity control (HCC) were established to determine the mean cytotoxicity of each solution and each solution's superiority to LCC and non-inferiority to HCC. The present study demonstrated that 0.05% CHG was non-inferior to the HCC when chondrosarcoma was exposed for 5 minutes and when GCT was exposed for 2 and 5 minutes (mean cytotoxicity, 99% to 102%) (p < 0.003 for all). Sterile water was superior to the LCC when chondrosarcoma was exposed for 5 minutes and when GCT was exposed for 2 minutes (mean, 28% to 37%) (p < 0.05). Sterile water (mean, 18% to 38%) (p < 0.012) and 3% hydrogen peroxide (mean, 7% to 16%) (p < 0.001) were both inferior to the HCC. The 3 other solutions were non-superior to the LCC (mean, -24% to -5%) (p < 0.023). In vitro irrigation in 0.05% CHG provided high cytotoxicity, comparable with the HCC. Therefore, the use of a 0.05% CHG solution clinically could serve as a potential chemical adjuvant during intralesional curettage of chondrosarcoma and GCT. In an effort to reduce the burden of residual tumor cells, irrigation solutions are often utilized as adjuvant local therapy. Use of a 0.05% CHG solution clinically could serve as a potential chemical adjuvant to intralesional curettage of chondrosarcoma and GCT. Further in vivo studies may be indicated to assess clinical outcomes and safety associated with the use of 0.05% CHG in the treatment of chondrosarcoma and GCT.

Microwave in situ inactivation in the treatment of bone giant cell tumor: a mid-term descriptive study.

To evaluate the mid-term clinical efficacy of microwave in situ inactivation combined with bone grafting or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) filling in the treatment of giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB). This is a retrospective, descriptive, and analytical study. A total of 30 GCTB patients received microwave in situ inactivation from January 2012 to January 2020, whose clinical recurrence rate was evaluated at the last follow-up after microwave in situ inactivation surgery. The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) function score was used to evaluate the postoperative clinical panoramic results. All patients were followed up for 21 to 110months, with an average of 63.79months. Distal femur (40%) and proximal tibia (28%) had a higher rate of GCTB incidence. Seventeen percent of tumor patients suffered from associated pathologic fracture. The rate of Campanacci classification stage III was 60%. The average MSTS score was evaluated as 27.53 points overall at the last follow-up. In terms of complications, three, two, two and one cases developed fat liquefaction, controllable tissue rejection reaction, incision infection and degenerative changes around lesion joint, respectively, without in situ recurrences and reoperation as well as distant lung metastasis. The method of microwave in situ inactivation combined with bone grafting or PMMA filling is prudently recommended as one of the options for the limb salvage treatment of giant cell tumor of long and periarticular bone.
