Constructed wetlands for the treatment of combined sewer overflow upstream of centralized wastewater treatment plants

Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) constitute nowadays a major environmental concern, representing one of the main untreated sources of pollution for receiving water bodies. Additional, in recent years, the frequency and intensity of CSOs have increased due to the growing urbanisation and climate change. Although there is no single effective strategy, one of the most promising approaches for the control and treatment of CSOs can be found in nature-based solutions (NBS), such as constructed wetlands (CWs). Despite the demonstrated potential of CWs to treat CSOs, the only data reported in the literature refer to CSO-CW systems located along the sewerage network. This research represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first monitoring of a full-scale CSO-CW designed to treat the combined sewer overflow upstream of the WWTP located in Carimate, in the province of Como (Italy). The system is a multistage CW, composed by a 1st vertical subsurface flow (VF) stage (total area of 8500 m2) and a 2nd free water surface (FWS) stage (total area of 4500 m2). The observed removal rates during the 3 years monitoring campaign (mean values equal to 83.2%, 64.6%, 63.8% for COD, TP, and N-NH4+ respectively) confirmed the treatment efficiency of CW system for all the investigated parameters, consistent with literature data for CSO-CWs in line with the sewerage network, despite its large scale and different hydraulic characteristics. Furthermore, the system also provides additional ecosystem services such as flood mitigation (average CSO interception of 82%), enhancement of biodiversity and a low operational and maintenance cost.

Application of Radial Type Multifiber Media Filtration Process for Combined Sewer Overflow Treatment

Fiber media filtration for combined sewer overflow (CSO) treatment was evaluated in this work. Pilot-scale experiments of CSO treatment involve seven layers that form radial-type fiber media filters. The fiber media filter was characterized using analysis techniques and exhibited extremely high hydrophobicity and negative charge. The results obtained for a sewer treatment plant at Tancheon in Seoul revealed potential for suspended solid, total organic carbon, and biochemical oxygen demand removal with efficiencies of 89.6%, 56%, and 42%, respectively. The results are consistent with the sieving effects and electrostatic repulsion between fiber media and pollutants. Head loss was induced by organic pollutants and was 10.5 cm after 20 h of operation. To mitigate the head loss induced by organic pollutants on the fiber media filter, sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) was used as a chemical backwashing agent. An NaClO concentration of 2000 mg/L with a soaking time of 24 h yielded an optimal head loss recovery of 96.2% of the initial head loss obtained for the virgin fiber media filter without media filter degradation. The result of the present study will provide practical insight and act as a technical guide for CSO treatment plant engineers.

GAC Adsorption of Dissolved Organic Matters for CSOs Treatment and Bioregeneration of Spent-GAC Using Denitrification

The capability of a laboratory-scale reactor packed with granular activated carbon (GAC) was evaluated in the removal process of organic matter dissolved in Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). First, the capacity of adsorption was recorded by six types of organic matter passing through the GAC reactor. Second, the breakthrough period was investigated when the CODcr adsorption ratio fell below 30% by varying the input intensity of CODcr into the GAC reactor from high, medium, to low. Lastly, the possibility of regenerating GAC through the denitrification process was examined. As a result, GAC adsorption capacity was ranked in order of sewage > sodium acetate > methanol > LB broth ≒ Glucose. Uniquely, glucose, being easily removed in the biological wastewater treatment process, had a low GAC adsorption capacity in this process. Thus, GAC showed the best adsorption for sewage among tested organic matters. Secondly, the breakthrough periods of the GAC adsorption reactor were 21, 28, and 32 days under high, medium, and low CODcr conditions, respectively. Lastly, the organic matter adsorbed in the GAC micro-pore was reused as an external organic carbon source to denitrifying bacteria in CSOs. However, the re-adsorption capacity was not at a satisfactory level which needs further research.

Combined sewer overflow treatment: Assessing chemical pre-treatment and microsieve-based filtration in enhancing the performance of UV disinfection

Disinfection of combined sewer overflow (CSO) is necessary to reduce the amount of microorganisms discharged into surface waters. In this study, an efficient and cost-competitive treatment for CSO, employing UV disinfection, was developed. High suspended solids content in CSO poses a significant challenge for UV disinfection so laboratory experiments were carried out to asses the effect of chemical pre-treatment followed by micro-sieve filtration on the reduction of total suspended solids (TSS) and the increase of UV transmittance (UVT). The efficiency of UV, with and without pre-treatment, was investigated and a microbial inactivation model was developed to describe the fecal coliforms (FC) inactivation kinetics. Finally, the environmental impacts of the proposed treatment were simulated at the large-scale by stormwater management model (SWMM), and the cost of the proposed treatment train was evaluated and compared with current CSO treatment strategies.Experimental results showed that UV alone achieved 3.6-log reduction of FC at a UV fluence of 80 mJ/cm2, while a 4-log reduction of FC was achieved at a much lower UV fluence of 10 mJ/cm2, when the UV disinfection was preceded by chemical pre-treatment and microsieving filtration using a 32 μm mesh. Under these conditions, the TSS removal achieved was 73%, and the UVT increased from 14% to 32%.The SWMM showed that the proposed CSO treatment achieved a reduction in TSS by one order of magnitude and a decrease in number of FC from 1.05 × 1014 to 1.24 × 1010 CFU. The cost analysis performed herein suggests that the proposed treatment train is competitive to current CSO treatment strategies in terms of cost-effectiveness.The study demonstrates the potential of the innovative CSO treatment scheme to quickly and effectively treat a large amount of wastewater flow thus providing municipalities with a low footprint treatment unit for CSO.

Coagulation-flocculation followed by catalytic ozonation processes for enhanced primary treatment during wet weather conditions

Combined sewer overflows (CSO), generated during the wet weather flow from the combination of the inflow and stormwater runoff in sewer system, result in an overflow of untreated wastewater from sewer system, which might ultimately contain different micropollutants (MPs). In this study, a coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) pretreated CSO spiked with MPs was treated by catalytic ozonation using carbon, iron, and peroxide-based catalysts. The catalysts were characterized and their activity on MPs removal was studied at two different ozone (O3) doses (5 and 10 mg L−1). The effect of the treatment on the spiked CSO effluent was also assessed from the acute toxicity of the effluent using Microtox®, Yeast, and Macrophage cell-line toxicity assay tests. All the carbon-based catalysts showed large surface area, which was strongly influenced by the activation technique in the preparation of the catalysts. The CFS treatment strongly reduced the turbidity (≥60%) but had marginal effect on the UV254, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and pH. Sludge Based Carbon (SBC) showed strong adsorption capacity (≥60% removal efficiency) for all MPs studied compared to other carbon and iron-based catalysts. Ozonation alone was effective for the degradation of easily oxidizable MPs (sulfamethoxazole, mecoprop, and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyl acetic acid), achieving more than 80% degradation efficiency at 10 mg L−1 of ozone, but not effective for atrazine (≤60% degradation efficiency) at similar O3 dose. Catalytic ozonation (at 10 mg L−1 O3 dose) improved the degradation of the MPs at low catalyst dosage but higher dosage strongly inhibited their degradation. In all cases, the effluents showed negligible acute toxicity, indicating the suitability of the process for the treatment of CSO.

Catchment-wide validated assessment of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in a mediterranean coastal area and possible disinfection methods to mitigate microbial contamination

The first phase of this study aimed to evaluate the environmental impact of combined sewer overflow (CSO) events originated from 35 spillways on the Rio Vallescura catchment (Central Italy) and to understand their contribution to the deterioration of the coastal bathing water quality. A specific analytical campaign was carried out in the sewer system and a dynamic rainfall-runoff simulation model was developed and integrated with a water quality model and further validated. The simulations led to identify the most critical spills in terms of flow rate and selected pollutant loads (i.e. suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, Escherichia coli). Specifically, the E. coli release in the water body due to CSO events represented almost 100% of the different pollutant sources considered. In the second phase, the applicability of various disinfection methods was investigated on the CSOs introduced into the catchment. On site physical (UV) and lab-scale chemical (peracetic acid (PAA), performic acid (PFA), ozone) disinfectant agents were tested on microbial indicators including E. coli and intestinal enterococci. PFA and ozone were more effective on the removal of both bacteria (above 3.5 log units) even at low concentration and with short contact time; whereas, PAA showed a moderate removal efficiency (around 2.5 log units) only for E. coli. The highest removal efficiency was achieved in the on-site UV unit and none of the indicator bacteria was detected in the final effluent after the sand filtration and UV treatment. Finally, potential scenarios were developed in comparison to the baseline scenario for the management and treatment of CSOs where a mitigation of E. coli loads from 28% to 73% was achieved on the receiving water body, and a comparative cost assessment of the disinfection methods was provided for in situ treatment of the most critical spillway.

Assessing the role of microbial communities in the performance of constructed wetlands used to treat combined sewer overflows

Combined sewer overflows are contaminated with various micropollutants which pose risk to both environmental and human health. Some micropollutants, such as carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole, are very persistent and difficult to remove from wastewater.Event loaded vertical-flow constructed wetlands (retention soil filters; RSFs) have proven to be effective in the treatment of combined sewer overflows for a wide range of pollutants. However, little is known about how microbial communities contribute to the treatment efficiency, specifically to the reduction of micropollutants. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study attempting to close this gap. Microbial communities in pilot-scale RSFs were investigated, which showed explicit grouping of metabolic activity at different filter depths with some differential abundance of identified genera. The highest microbial activity was found in the top layer of 0.75 m deep filters, whereas homogeneous activity dominated in a 0.50 m deep filter, indicating oxygen availability to be a limiting factor of the metabolic activity in RSFs. The removal efficiencies of all investigated organic trace substances were correlated to the utilization of specific carbon sources. Most notable is the correlation between the carbon source glucose-1-phosphate and the removal of metoprolol. The strongest correlations for other substances were the removal of diclofenac to the utilization of the carbohydrate i-erythritole; bisphenol A to carbohydrate α-d-lactose, and 1-H-benzotriazole to carbonic acid D-galacturonic acid. Those results are supported by positive correlations of specific microbial genera with both the utilization of the above mentioned carbon sources and the removal efficiency for the respective micropollutants. Most notable is correlation of Tetrasphaera and the removal of benzotriazole and diclofenac.

Combined sewer overflows: A critical review on best practice and innovative solutions to mitigate impacts on environment and human health

Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) are of major environmental concern for impacted surface waterbodies. In the last decades, major storm events have become increasingly regular in some areas, and meteorological scenarios predict a further rise in their frequency. Consequently, control and treatment of CSOs with respect to best practice examples, innovative treatment solutions, and management of sewer systems are an inevitable necessity. As a result, the number of publications concerning quality, quantity, and type of treatments has recently increased. This review therefore aims to provide a critical overview on the effects, control, and treatment of CSOs in terms of impact on the environment and public health, strict measures addressed by regulations, and the various treatment alternatives including natural and compact treatments. Drawing together the previous studies, an innovative treatment and control guideline are also proposed for the better management practices.

Performance of retention soil filters for the reduction of hygienically-relevant microorganisms in combined sewage overflow and treated wastewater.

Environmental quality standards for surface waters have been significantly expanded through recent amendments to German regulations. Limit values are only established for applicable regulations if the water is indicated for certain uses, e.g. abstraction of irrigation water. Nevertheless, surface water bodies are often used for hygiene-sensitive purposes. In the course of climate change, stronger precipitation events will occur, which may lead to more frequent loading and discharge of combined sewer overflow (CSO) into surface water bodies. Retention soil filters (RSFs) are attracting attention as an extensive treatment technology for CSO and additional wastewater treatment. This study examined large-scale RSFs for CSO treatment, as well as the effectiveness of RSFs as a fourth purification stage. An RSF test facility was established at a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), consisting three semi-technical RSFs that were fed exclusively with treated water from the WWTP. The reduction of microorganisms mostly occurred within the first centimeters of the RSFs. For most hygienic-microbiological parameters, a 1-2 log unit reduction could be detected in addition to the reduction within the WWTP. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria were reduced to the same extent. Investigation of the large-scale RSFs showed that a flow rate reduced by half corresponded to better reduction performances.

An innovative compact system for advanced treatment of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) discharged into large lakes: Pilot-scale validation

Combined sewer overflows discharging into natural water bodies could potentially contaminate them in terms of conventional wastewater parameters and coliform bacteria. When green water infrastructures are not technically feasible or practically sustainable for stormwater management, innovative compact and effective end-of-pipe systems can be of interest. This study presents long-term and real-environment validated data of a compact and rapid treatment system specifically applicable to CSOs that consists of a dynamic rotating belt filter, adsorption on granular activated carbon and UV disinfection steps. The results of treatment for Lake Garda in Italy, showed great potential for TSS, COD and E. coli removal efficiencies with more than 90%, 69% and 99% respectively. Due to the short contact time of GAC adsorption, nutrients removals were not very high. TN and TP removal of around 41% and 19% were observed respectively that suggests further specific nutrients removal processes are required for achieving higher efficiencies. The treatment system, due to its compactness and rapidness could be a great asset for water utilities in different EU catchments that are dealing with the frequent CSO events. In addition, the possibility of using different combinations of treatment steps allows the choice of different treatment scenarios depending on the treatment goals for any specific catchment.

A microsieve-based filtration process for combined sewer overflow treatment with nutrient control: Modeling and experimental studies

Combined sewer overflows contain a highly variable, wide range of contaminants, both in particulate and soluble form, making conventional water treatment processes unable to offer adequate public health protection. In this study, an integrated treatment process designed to simultaneously remove typical combined sewer overflow pollutants (suspended solids, chemical oxygen depends, turbidity) in conjunction with nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus), was developed. The removal of particulates as well as dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus was achieved by first adsorbing soluble pollutants on zeolite and powdered activated carbon, and subsequently applying filtration carried out by polymer-enhanced microsieving.Laboratory experiments were designed using design-of-experiment techniques and carried out to assess the effects of the various treatment variables (cationic polymer, zeolite, powder activated carbon and microsieve size) in the designed combinations. A response surface model was fitted to the experimental dataset in order to capture and describe the non-linear relationships between treatment variables and treatment objectives.Finally, an optimization study was carried out using Pareto analysis showing that cationic polymer, zeolite, and powdered activated carbon, followed by fine mesh microsieving, worked synergistically in the integrated treatment process. Several optimal process conditions emerged, in particular, a treatment combination consisting of 1.1 mg/L of the cationic polymer, 250 mg/L of zeolite, 5 mg/L of powdered activated carbon, and a 370 μm mesh size. Under this condition, expected performance would be reductions of 72%, 56%, 35%, and 75% for turbidity, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total chemical oxygen demand, and total phosphorous, respectively. The findings presented in this paper demonstrate the possibility of achieving multiple treatment objectives in a single and integrated treatment step, hence providing municipalities with viable treatment options where the issues of combined sewer overflow and nutrient management are simultaneously tackled.

Network Topology and Rainfall Controls on the Variability of Combined Sewer Overflows and Loads

AbstractWater and pollutant fluxes from combined sewer overflows (CSO) have a significant impact on receiving waters. The random nature of rainfall forcing dominates the variability of sewer discharges, pollutant loads, and concentrations. An analytical model developed here shows how sewer network topology and rainfall properties variously impact the stochasticity of CSO functioning. Probability distributions of sewer discharge and concentration compare well with the results from a calibrated Storm Water Management Model in an application to a sewershed located in Dresden, Germany. The model is determined by only four parameters, three of which can be predicted a priori, two from the rainfall record and one from the network topology using geomorphological flow recession theory, while the fourth can be estimated from a short discharge time series. The sensitivity of CSO and wastewater treatment loads to network structure suggests simple topologies may be more vulnerable to poor performance. The analytical model is useful for evaluating various CSO management strategies to reduce adverse impacts on receiving waters in a probabilistic setting.

Retention soil filters for the treatment of sewage treatment plant effluent and combined sewer overflow

Retention soil filters (RSFs) are vertical flow constructed wetlands. They are mainly used for the treatment of combined sewer overflow or stormwater, and not operated during dry weather conditions. However, RSFs have been successfully tested as continuous post treatment for sewage treatment plant effluents. In this paper we present a new approach, namely dual usage of the retention soil filter. During dry weather the RSF is used for the polishing treatment of sewage treatment plant effluent and during overflow events, the retention soil filter treats the combined sewer overflow. This study was conducted at two pilot RSFs that were fed with sewage treatment effluent for four years. Removal of TOC, DOC, nutrients and 21 organic micropollutants was determined during six months at different sequences of regular effluent and overflow treatment conditions. TOC, DOC and nutrients, appearing in high concentration in combined sewer overflow, were effectively removed, and metformin and caffeine micropollutants showed >99% removal. Residues from this combined sewer treatment that were sorbed on filter material or stored in pore water were washed out directly after treatment when STP effluent infiltration was initiated. This effect declined within 20 h after combined sewer overflow treatment. Dry periods of 18 h between combined sewer and sewage treatment plant effluent feeding counteracted the wash out effects. The highest removal efficiency was found in the beginning of the feeding time of 28 h, indicating that shorter feeding cycles enhance the overall efficiency of the RSF. Finally, the results show that a single RSF system can successfully reduce emissions of TOC, DOC, nutrients and micropollutants to surface waters from two different emission pathways, i.e. from regular treated effluents and storm related sewer overflows. In conclusion, the dual usage of RSF is a promising approach and ready for upscaling and implementation.

Citizen science to enhance evaluation of local wastewater treatment - a case study from Oslo.

The paper discusses how citizen science within an ecosystem services (ESS) framework may enhance evaluation of de-centralized water solutions. In a demonstration case in Oslo, citizens were engaged in long-term monitoring and evaluation of two solutions for treatment of combined sewer overflows. The citizens participated in the design of the study, systematic observations, and final evaluation, via interviews and workshops. A wealth of real-time information was collected, supplementing simulation data and water sampling results. The concept of ESS drew attention to benefits that tend to be ignored in standard evaluations. It is, however, most elaborate for ecological services, and less developed for social aspects. Involving the citizens complemented the framework in these areas, while providing new insights into the contextual interactions influencing ESS and benefits of local treatment. Both solutions, a cross-flow lamella settler and a high-rate filtration system, were quite efficient in removing suspended solids, with a strong impact on visual appearance. A range of wider benefits were identified. These were difficult to monetize, but the citizens' evaluation provided an alternative measure. The study highlights the benefits of citizen science in local water management and suggests the need for more research on beneficiaries in ESS evaluation.

High rate filtration for local treatment of combined sewer overflow.

Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) pollute receiving waters and have a negative impact on ecosystem services. In urban areas rehabilitation of the sewer system to avoid CSOs is associated with high investment costs. Furthermore, not all CSOs can be closed due to the need for hydraulic reliability of the system. Local treatment of CSO with high rate filtration offers an alternative to rehabilitation of the sewer system that is flexible with respect to design and has lower investment cost than separating sewage and storm water runoff. Results from DESSIN, a 4-year EU demonstration project, are presented. The results showed on average 50% removal of particulate matter during CSO events, with higher removal (80%) in the initial first flush period. Other constituents, for example heavy metals, were removed through their association with particles. Potential impacts on ecosystem services in the catchment and the sustainability of the solution were assessed.

Stormwater runoff treatment filtration system and backwashing system.

This study has been carried out to evaluate the applicability of the pilot scale hybrid type of stormwater runoff treatment system for treatment of combined sewer overflow. Also, to determine the optimum operation parameter such as coagulation dosage concentration, effectiveness of coagulant usage, surface loading rate and backwashing conditions. The pilot scale stormwater filtration system (SFS) was installed at the municipal wastewater plant serving the city of Cheongju (CWTP), Korea. CWTP has a capacity of 280,000 m3/day. The SFS consists of a hydrocyclone coagulation/flocculation with polyaluminium chloride silicate (PACS) and an upflow filter to treat combined sewer overflows. There are two modes (without PACS use and with PACS use) of operation for the SFS. In case of no coagulant use, the range of suspended solids (SS) and turbidity removal efficiency were 72.0-86.6% (mean 80.0%) and 30.9-71.1% (mean 49.3%), respectively. And, the recovery rate of filter was 79.2-83.6% (mean 81.2%); the rate of remaining solid loading in filter media was 16.4-20.8% (mean 18.8%) after backwashing. The influent turbidity, SS concentrations were 59.0-90.7 NTU (mean 72.0 NTU), 194.0-320.0 mg/L (mean 246.7 mg/L), respectively. The range of PACS dosage concentration was 6.0-7.1 mg/L (mean 6.7 mg/L). The range of SS and turbidity removal efficiency was 84.9-98.2 (mean 91.4%) and 70.7-96.3 (mean 84.0%), respectively. It was found that removal efficiency was enhanced with PACS dosage. The recovery rate of filter was 92.0-92.5% (mean 92.3%) the rate of remaining solid loading in filter media was 6.1-8.2% (mean 7.2%) after backwashing. In the case of coagulant use, the particle size of the effluent is bigger than influent particle size. The results showed that SFS with PACS use more effective than without PACS use in SS and turbidity removal efficiency and recovery rate of filter.

Reduction of micropollutants and bacteria in a constructed wetland for combined sewer overflow treatment after 7 and 10 years of operation

Repeated investigations on constructed wetlands for the treatment of combined sewer overflows, also named bioretention filters or retention soil filters, are necessary to provide information on their long-term performance. In this study, a sampling campaign was conducted on micropollutants, indicator microorganisms and standard parameters ten years after such filters were in operation and three years after the first investigation; it revealed that the filters lost capacity to remove chemical substances with no or only slow biological degradability. This was the case e.g. for phosphate (decrease from 29 to 11%), diclofenac (67 to 34%) and TCPP (34% to negative reduction). They continued to remove easily degradable parameters such as COD (stable around 75%) stably. The indicator microorganisms Escherichia coli (1.1/0.8 log10), intestinal enterococci (1.3/0.8 log10) and somatic coliphages (0.6/1.0 log10) showed comparably low process variations given the difficulties in sampling and analysing microbial parameters representatively as well as given natural variations in microbial behaviour and growth. Additionally, for bisphenol A, we found a temperature-related difference of removal efficiencies: while in the cold months (winter), the removal was only 53% on average, it increased to 90% in the warm months (summer).As for the long-term prospective of retention soil filters, decision-makers need to identify the most important pollutants in a specific catchment area and adapt the filter design accordingly. If pollutants are targeted that lead to an exhausted filtration capacity, post treatment or the exchange of charged filter material is necessary. However, for easily biologically degradable substances, so far, there is no limit in their use.

Reduction of bacteria and somatic coliphages in constructed wetlands for the treatment of combined sewer overflow (retention soil filters).

Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) introduce numerous pathogens from fecal contamination, such as bacteria and viruses, into surface waters, thus endangering human health. In Germany, retention soil filters (RSFs) treat CSOs at sensitive discharge points and can contribute to reducing these hygienically relevant microorganisms. In this study, we evaluated the extent of how dry period, series connection and filter layer thickness influence the reduction efficiency of RSFs for Escherichia coli (E. coli), intestinal enterococci (I. E.) and somatic coliphages. To accomplish this, we had four pilot scale RSFs built on a test field at the wastewater treatment plant Aachen-Soers. While two filters were replicates, the other two filters were installed in a series connection. Moreover, one filter had a thinner filtration layer than the other three. Between April 2015 and December 2016, the RSFs were loaded in 37 trials with pre-conditioned CSO after dry periods ranging from 4 to 40 days. During 17 trials, samples for microbial analysis were taken and analyzed. The series connection of two filters showed that the removal increases when two systems with a filter layer of the same height are operated in series. Since the microorganisms are exposed twice to the environmental conditions on the filter surface and in the upper filter layers, there is a greater chance for abiotic adsorption increase. The same effect could be shown when filters with different depths were compared: the removal efficiency increases as filter thickness increases. This study provides new evidence that regardless of seasonal effects and dry period, RSFs can improve hygienic situation significantly.

Flood reduction as an ecosystem service of constructed wetlands for combined sewer overflow

Urban runoff negatively impacts the receiving streams and different solutions have been proposed in literature to limit the effect of urbanization on the water balance. These solutions suggest to manage urban runoff in order to switch from a post-development river hydrograph (high peak and short duration) back again to a pre-development hydrograph (low peak and high duration). Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) represent severe pollutant sources for receiving streams due to the combination of first flush of roads and sewers and black water conveyed by combined sewer systems. Constructed wetlands for CSO treatment (CSO-CWs) are adopted with increasing frequency for reducing pollutant inputs to streams. Moreover, these systems exhibit the characteristic to behave similarly to ponds, wetlands, and bioretention systems that provide flood mitigation by decreasing the intensity of peak flows. This work aims to show the additional ecosystem service provided by CSO-CWs in term of limitation of the hydraulic impact of CSO on stream hydrograph. A mathematical model is developed to simulate the hydraulic behavior of a real case study situated in Gorla Maggiore (Italy), which includes vertical flow subsurface beds (VF) as first stage and a free water surface bed (FWS) as second stage. The model simulates the unsaturated flow within VF and the accumulation of water on the top of VF and within FWS. Results show a satisfactory lamination performance of the system for both single and up to 5 consecutive flood events, with a peak flow reduction ranging from 52.7% to 95.4%. Withdrawn of flow rate from the river in order to cope with long dry period does not significantly affect the lamination performances. The considered CSO-CW exhibits an excellent lamination efficiency also during more intense floods events, with a peak flow reduction of 86.2% for a CSO event with return period of 10 years. The flow rate frequency density function determined by the CSO-CW is more shifted towards lower values compared to untreated CSOs. These results indicate that CSO-CWs work properly in terms of reduction of CSO urbanization impact on stream hydrology.
