Temporal variability, meteorological influences, and long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols over two contrasting environments Agartala and Patiala in India.

The present study focused on the temporal variability, meteorological influences, potential sources, and long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols over two contrasting environments during 2011-2013. We have chosen Agartala (AGR) city in Northeast India as one of our sites representing the rural-continental environment and Patiala (PTA) as an urban site in Northwest India. The seasonal averaged equivalent black carbon (eBC) concentration in AGR ranges from 1.55 to 38.11µg/m3 with an average value of 9.87 ± 8.17µg/m3, whereas, at an urban location, PTA value ranges from 1.30 to 15.57µg/m3 with an average value of 7.83 ± 3.51µg/m3. The annual average eBC concentration over AGR was observed to be ~ 3 times higher than PTA. Two diurnal peaks (morning and evening) in eBC have been observed at both sites but were observed to be more prominent at AGR than at PTA. Spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD) has been observed to be in the range from 0.33 ± 0.09 (post-monsoon) to 0.85 ± 0.22 (winter) at AGR and 0.47 ± 0.04 (pre-monsoon) to 0.74 ± 0.09 (post-monsoon) at PTA. The concentration of eBC and its diurnal and seasonal variation indicates the primary sources of eBC as local sources, synoptic meteorology, planetary boundary layer (PBL) dynamics, and distant transportation of aerosols. The wintertime higher values of eBC at AGR than at PTA are linked with the transportation of eBC from the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP). Furthermore, it is evident that eBC aerosols are transported from local and regional sources, which is supported by concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis results.

Molecular Distributions and 13C Isotopic Composition of Dicarboxylic Acids, Oxocarboxylic Acids, and α‐dicarbonyls in Wintertime PM2.5 at Three Sites Over Northeast Asia: Implications for Origins and Long‐Range Atmospheric Transport

AbstractTo investigate the spatial changes in origins and impact of long‐range transported air masses on organic aerosols (OA) loading and composition over Northeast Asia, fine aerosols (PM2.5) were collected at three sites: Tianjin (TJ), North China and in Padori (PD), and Daejeon (DJ), South Korea, during winter 2019. We studied molecular distributions and compound‐specific stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of dicarboxylic acids, oxocarboxylic acids and α‐dicarbonyls, and carbonaceous and inorganic ionic components in PM2.5. Concentrations of organic carbon was drastically enhanced in haze period compared to that in clean period, but elemental carbon was almost comparable between the two periods. Concentrations of total diacids, oxoacids, and α‐dicarbonyls were higher at TJ followed by DJ and PD during haze period and at DJ followed by TJ and PD during clean period. On average, oxalic acid (C2) was the most abundant among measured species at all three sites, followed by methyl glyoxal (MeGly) and glyoxylic acid (ωC2) at TJ and DJ, and succinic acid (C4) and ωC2 were almost equal and second most abundant followed by MeGly at PD. Based on the mass ratios and linear relations of selected species together with δ13C of diacids and related compounds, we found that contributions of OA from biomass burning/biogenic emissions and their aging were higher at TJ and PD, whereas at DJ, emissions from anthropogenic sources and in situ secondary formation were also important. Furthermore, this study implies that long‐range atmospheric transport of aerosols from source regions to downwind regions are substantial over Northeast Asia.

Thallium Pollution in Europe Over the Twentieth Century Recorded in Alpine Ice: Contributions From Coal Burning and Cement Production

AbstractEmission inventories indicate that thallium, a highly toxic metal, is emitted during coal burning and cement production. These estimates have been established only for the 1980s and 1990s but up to now they have not been compared to long‐term observations. Here we used alpine ice cores to document thallium pollution over Europe since ∼1850. Ice‐core thallium concentrations increased from 1890 to 1910, and decreased after 1965 to concentrations that were half 1890 levels. Comparison of ice‐core trends, estimated past emissions, and state‐of‐the‐art atmospheric aerosol transport modeling suggest that coal burning was responsible for thallium pollution in Europe, particularly from 1920 to 1965 because of high coal consumption at that time. The subsequent decline resulted from decreased coal consumption and reduced emissions following technological improvements. The ice‐core data suggest that the rapid growth of cement production that took place in Europe after 1950 had a limited impact on thallium pollution.

Insights into Variations and Potential Long-Range Transport of Atmospheric Aerosols from the Aral Sea Basin in Central Asia

The dramatic shrinkage of the Aral Sea in the past decades has inevitably led to an environmental calamity. Existing knowledge on the variations and potential transport of atmospheric aerosols from the Aral Sea Basin (ASB) is limited. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study tried to identify the variations and long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols from the ASB in recent years. The Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model and Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) data were used to gain new insight into the types, variation and long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols from the ASB. The results showed five types of tropospheric aerosols and one type of stratospheric aerosol were observed over the ASB. Polluted dust and dust were the dominant subtypes through the year. Sulfate/other was the only stratospheric aerosol detected. The occurrence frequency of aerosols over the ASB showed obvious seasonal variation. Maximum occurrence frequency of dust appeared in spring (MAM) and that of polluted dust peaked in summer (JJA). The monthly occurrence frequency of dust and polluted dust exhibited unimodal distribution. Polluted dust and dust were distributed over wide ranges from 1 km to 5 km vertically. The multi-year average thickness of polluted dust and dust layers was around 1.3 km. Their potential long-range transport in different directions mainly impacts Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and eastern Iran, and may reach as far as the Caucasus region, part of China, Mongolia and Russia. Combining aerosol lidar, atmospheric climate models and geochemical methods is strongly suggested to gain clarity on the variations and long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols from the Aral Sea Basin.

Atmospheric transport of dust aerosol from arid zones to the Moscow region during fall 2020

<abstract> <p>We analyzed the unique episode of long-range dust/sand atmospheric aerosol transport from the arid zones of the southern European territory of Russia, i.e. the Northern Caspian and Astrakhan regions and the Kalmykia Republic, to the Moscow region during fall 2020. Intensive complex experiments were carried out at the A.M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciencesin the center of Moscow through different seasons during 2020–2021 to study the composition of near-surface aerosols in the Moscow megacity. The experimental data are considered to take into account the synoptic features and meteorological conditions. Abnormally high values of near-surface aerosol mass concentrations in Moscow were registered during the period from 6 to 14 of October 2020 under stable anti-cyclonic conditions, with calm or quiet/light wind (1–2 m/s), and under the conditions of the dominance of southeastern air mass transport. At the same time, the average daily mass concentration of aerosol particles PM<sub>10</sub> exceeded the Maximum Permissible Concentration (MPC) value (60 µg/m<sup>3</sup>) by 1.5–4.5 times, and the number of large (micron) particles increased by an order or more. Comparative analysis of aerosol elemental composition in Moscow (during this episode) and in Kalmykia (according to observations in July 2020) showed high correlation for terrigenous elements' patterns. The aerosol origin for this episode was confirmed by performing long-range trajectory analysis of air mass transport (HYSPLIT model), and by using MERRA-2 reanalysis data for dust aerosol spatial distribution.</p> </abstract>

Continuous flow analysis methods for sodium, magnesium and calcium detection in the Skytrain ice core

AbstractDissolved and particulate sodium, magnesium and calcium are analyzed in ice cores to determine past changes in sea ice extent, terrestrial dust variability and atmospheric aerosol transport efficiency. They are also used to date ice cores if annual layers are visible. Multiple methods have been developed to analyze these important compounds in ice cores. Continuous flow analysis (CFA) is implemented with instruments that sample the meltstream continuously. In this study, CFA with ICP-MS (inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry) and fast ion chromatography (FIC) methods are compared for analysis of sodium and magnesium. ICP-MS, FIC and fluorescence methods are compared for analysis of calcium. Respective analysis of a 10 m section of the Antarctic WACSWAIN Skytrain Ice Rise ice core shows that all of the methods result in similar levels of the compounds. The ICP-MS method is the most suitable for analysis of the Skytrain ice core due to its superior precision (relative standard deviation: 1.6% for Na, 1.3% for Mg and 1.2% for Ca) and sampling frequency compared to the FIC method. The fluorescence detection method may be preferred for calcium analysis due to its higher depth resolution (1.4 cm) relative to the ICP-MS and FIC methods (~4 cm).

Measurement report: Spatial variations in ionic chemistry and water-stable isotopes in the snowpack on glaciers across Svalbard during the 2015–2016 snow accumulation season

Abstract. The Svalbard archipelago, located at the Arctic sea-ice edge between 74 and 81∘ N, is ∼60 % covered by glaciers. The region experiences rapid variations in atmospheric flow during the snow season (from late September to May) and can be affected by air advected from both lower and higher latitudes, which likely impact the chemical composition of snowfall. While long-term changes in Svalbard snow chemistry have been documented in ice cores drilled from two high-elevation glaciers, the spatial variability of the snowpack composition across Svalbard is comparatively poorly understood. Here, we report the results of the most comprehensive seasonal snow chemistry survey to date, carried out in April 2016 across 22 sites on seven glaciers across the archipelago. At each glacier, three snowpits were sampled along the altitudinal profiles and the collected samples were analysed for major ions (Ca2+, K+, Na+, Mg2+, NH4+, SO42-, Br−, Cl−, and NO3-) and stable water isotopes (δ18O, δ2H). The main aims were to investigate the natural and anthropogenic processes influencing the snowpack and to better understand the influence of atmospheric aerosol transport and deposition patterns on the snow chemical composition. The snow deposited in the southern region of Svalbard is characterized by the highest total ionic loads, mainly attributed to sea-salt particles. Both NO3- and NH4+ in the seasonal snowpack reflect secondary aerosol formation and post-depositional changes, resulting in very different spatial deposition patterns: NO3- has its highest loading in north-western Spitsbergen and NH4+ in the south-west. The Br− enrichment in snow is highest in north-eastern glacier sites closest to areas of extensive sea-ice coverage. Spatial correlation patterns between Na+ and δ18O suggest that the influence of long-range transport of aerosols on snow chemistry is proportionally greater above 600–700 m a.s.l.

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in the atmospheric deposition during 1950-2016 A.D. from a snow pit at Dome A, East Antarctica.

Antarctic trace element records could provide important insights into the impact of human activities on the environment over the past few centuries. In this study, we investigated the atmospheric concentrations of 14 representative heavy metals (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Pb, Sb, Sr, Tl and V) from 174 samples collected in a 4-m snow pit at Dome Argus (Dome A) on the East Antarctic Plateau, covering the period from 1950 to 2016 A.D. We found great variability in the annual concentration of all metals. The crustal enrichment factors suggest that the concentrations of some heavy metals (Cd, Sb, Cu, As and Pb) were likely influenced by anthropogenic activities in recent decades. An analysis of source regions suggests that heavy metal pollution at Dome A was largely caused by human activities in Australia and South America (e.g. mining production, leaded gasoline). Based on the relationship between the trace elements fluxes and sea ice concentration (SIC), sea surface temperature (SST) and annual mean air temperature at 2m above the ground (T2m), our analysis shows that deposition and transport of atmospheric aerosol at Dome A were influenced by circum-Antarctic atmospheric circulations.

Cadmium Pollution From Zinc‐Smelters up to Fourfold Higher Than Expected in Western Europe in the 1980s as Revealed by Alpine Ice

AbstractEstimates of past emission inventories suggest that toxic heavy metal pollution in Europe was highest in the mid‐1970s for lead and in the mid‐1960s for cadmium, but these previous estimates have not been compared to observations. Here, alpine ice‐cores were used to document cadmium and lead pollution in western Europe between 1890 and 2000. The ice‐core trends show that while lead pollution largely from leaded gasoline reached a maximum in ~1975 as expected, cadmium pollution primarily from zinc smelters peaked in the early‐1980s rather than in ~1965 and was up to fourfold higher than estimated after 1975. Comparisons between ice‐core trends, estimated past emissions, and state‐of‐the‐art atmospheric aerosol transport and deposition modeling suggest that the estimated decreases in cadmium emissions after 1970 were based on overly optimistic emissions reductions from the introduction of pollution control devices and other technological improvements.

Detection of aerosol pollution sources during sandstorms in Northwestern China using remote sensed and model simulated data

The present paper has used a comprehensive approach to study atmosphere pollution sources including the study of vertical distribution characteristics, the epicenters of occurrence and transport of atmospheric aerosol in North-West China under intensive dust storm registered in all cities of the region in April 2014. To achieve this goal, the remote sensing data using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer satellite (MODIS) as well as model-simulated data, were used, which facilitate tracking the sources, routes, and spatial extent of dust storms. The results of the study have shown strong territory pollution with aerosol during sandstorm. According to ground-based air quality monitoring stations data, concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 exceeded 400 μg/m3 and 150 μg/m3, respectively, the ratio PM2.5/PM10 being within the range of 0.123–0.661. According to MODIS/Terra Collection 6 Level-2 aerosol products data and the Deep Blue algorithm data, the aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 550 nm in the pollution epicenter was within 0.75–1. The vertical distribution of aerosols indicates that the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) 532 nm total attenuates backscatter coefficient ranges from 0.01 to 0.0001 km−1 × sr−1 with the distribution of the main types of aerosols in the troposphere of the region within 0–12.5 km, where the most severe aerosol contamination is observed in the lower troposphere (at 3–6 km). According to satellite sounding and model-simulated data, the sources of pollution are the deserted regions of Northern and Northwestern China.

A new archive of large volcanic events over the past millennium derived from reconstructed summer temperatures

Information about past volcanic impact on climate is mostly derived from historic documentary data and sulfate depositions in polar ice sheets. Although these archives have provided important insights into the Earth’s volcanic eruption history, the climate forcing and exact dating of many events is still vague. Here we apply a new method of break detection to the first millennium-length maximum latewood density reconstruction of Northern Hemisphere summer temperatures to develop an alternative record of large volcanic eruptions. The analysis returns fourteen outstanding cooling events, all of which agree well with recently developed volcanic forcing records from high-resolution bipolar ice cores. In some cases, however, the climatic impact detected with our new method peaks in neighboring years, likely due to either dating errors in the polar ice cores or uncertainty in the interpretation of atmospheric aerosol transport to polar ice core locations. The most apparent mismatches between forcing and cooling estimates occur in the 1450s and 1690s. Application of the algorithm to two additional and recently developed reconstructions that blend maximum latewood density and ring width data reproduces twelve of the detected events among which eight are retrieved in all three of the dendroclimatic reconstructions. Collectively, the new estimates of volcanic activity with precise age control provide independent evidence for forcing records during the last millennium. Evaluating the cooling magnitude in response to detected events yields an upper benchmark for the volcanic impact on climate. The average response to the ten major events in the density derived reconstruction is −0.60 °C ± 0.13 °C. Other last millennium temperature records from proxies and model simulations reveal higher cooling estimates, which is, to some degree, related to the very different high frequency variance in these timeseries.

Elements and inorganic ions as source tracers in recent Greenland snow

Atmospheric transport of aerosols leads to deposition of impurities in snow, even in areas of the Arctic as remote as Greenland. Major ions (e.g. Na+, Ca2+, NH4+, K+, SO42−) are frequently used as tracers for common aerosol sources (e.g. sea spray, dust, biomass burning, anthropogenic emissions). Trace element data can supplement tracer ion data by providing additional information about sources. Although many studies have considered either trace elements or major ions, few have reported both. This study determined total and water-soluble concentrations of 31 elements (Al, As, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Dy, Eu, Fe, Gd, K, La, Mg, Mn, Na, Nb, Nd, Pb, Pr, S, Sb, Si, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ti, V, U, Y, Zn) in shallow snow pits at 22 sampling sites in Greenland, along a transect from Summit Station to sites in the northwest. Black carbon (BC) and inorganic ions were measured in colocated samples. Sodium, which is typically used as a tracer of sea spray, did not appear to have any non-marine sources. The rare earth elements, alkaline earth elements (Mg, Ca, Sr), and other crustal elements (Fe, Si, Ti, V) were not enriched above crustal abundances relative to Al, indicating that these elements are primarily dust sourced. Calculated ratios of non-sea salt Ca (nssCa) to estimated dust mass affirm the use of nssCa as a dust tracer, but suggest up to 50% uncertainty in that estimate in the absence of other crustal element data. Crustal enrichment factors indicated that As, Cd, Pb, non-sea-salt S, Sb, Sn, and Zn were enriched in these samples, likely by anthropogenic sources. Principal component analysis indicated more than one crustal factor, and a variety of factors related to anthropogenically enriched elements. Analysis of trace elements alongside major tracer ions does not change interpretation of ion-based source attribution for sources that are well-characterized by ions, but is valuable for assessing uncertainty in source attribution and identifying sources not represented by major ions.

Application of Adjoint Data Assimilation Method to Atmospheric Aerosol Transport Problems

We propose combining the adjoint assimilation method with characteristic finite difference scheme (CFD) to solve the aerosol transport problems, which can predict the distribution of atmospheric aerosols efficiently by using large time steps. Firstly, the characteristic finite difference scheme (CFD) is tested to compute the Gaussian hump using large time step sizes and is compared with the first-order upwind scheme (US1) using small time steps; the US1 method gets E2 error of 0.2887 using Δt=1/450, while CFD method gets a much smaller E2 of 0.2280 using a much larger time step Δt=1/45. Then, the initial distribution of PM2.5 concentration is inverted by the adjoint assimilation method with CFD and US1. The adjoint assimilation method with CFD gets better accuracy than adjoint assimilation method with US1 while adjoint assimilation method with CFD costs much less computational time. Further, a real case of PM2.5 concentration distribution in China during the APEC 2014 is simulated by using adjoint assimilation method with CFD. The simulation results are in good agreement with the observed values. The adjoint assimilation method with CFD can solve large scale aerosol transport problem efficiently.

The conservative characteristic FD methods for atmospheric aerosol transport problems

In the paper, we develop the new conservative characteristic finite difference methods (C-CFD) for the atmospheric aerosol transport problems. We propose the time second-order and spatial high-order conservative characteristic finite difference methods for the aerosol vertical advection-diffusion process and the two-dimensional conservative characteristic finite difference methods for aerosol horizontal transport process in the second-order splitting algorithm. Based on the characteristic form of advection-diffusion equations tracking back along the characteristic curve, we treat the integrals over the tracking cells at the previous time level by the conservative interpolations and propose to treat the diffusion terms by the average along the characteristics, where the high-order discrete fluxes are obtained by approximating the cumulative mass function and are continuous at the tracking points. The important feature is that the proposed C-CFD schemes preserve mass and have second-order accuracy in time and high-order accuracy in space. Numerical tests are taken to show the accuracy in time and space and mass conservation of our C-CFD schemes, compared with the standard CFD method. A real case of air quality modelling during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a severe haze in North China are further simulated and analyzed by using our C-CFD algorithm. Simulated results are in good agreement with observations. The developed C-CFD algorithm can be used for efficiently solving large scale atmospheric aerosol transport problems.

Similarities and differences of aerosol optical properties between southern and northern sides of the Himalayas

Abstract. The Himalaya mountains along the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau act as a natural barrier for the transport of atmospheric aerosols from the polluted regions of South Asia to the main body of the Tibetan Plateau. In this study, we investigate the seasonal and diurnal variations of aerosol optical properties measured at two Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites on the southern side of the Himalaya (Pokhara, 812 m above sea level (a.s.l.) and EVK2-CNR, 5079 m a.s.l. in Nepal) and one on the northern side (Qomolangma (Mt. Everest) station for Atmospheric and Environmental Observation and Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (QOMS_CAS) in Tibet, 4076 m a.s.l. in China). While observations at QOMS_CAS and EVK2-CNR can generally be representative of a remote background atmosphere, Pokhara is a lower-elevation suburban site with much higher aerosol load due to both the influence of local anthropogenic activities and to its proximity to the Indo-Gangetic Plains. The annual mean aerosol optical depth (AOD) during the investigated period was 0.05 at QOMS_CAS, 0.04 at EVK2-CNR and 0.51 at Pokhara, respectively. Seasonal variations of aerosols are profoundly affected by large-scale atmospheric circulation. Vegetation fires, peaking during April in the Himalayan region and northern India, contribute to a growing fine mode AOD at the three stations. Dust transported to these sites, wind erosion and hydrated/cloud-processed aerosols lead to an increase in coarse mode AOD during the monsoon season at QOMS_CAS and EVK2-CNR. Meanwhile, coarse mode AOD at EVK2-CNR is higher than at QOMS_CAS in August and September, indicating that the transport of coarse mode aerosols from the southern to the northern side may be effectively reduced. The effect of precipitation scavenging is clearly seen at Pokhara, which sees significantly reduced aerosol loads during the monsoon season. Unlike the seasonal variations, diurnal variations are mainly influenced by meso-scale systems and local topography. The diurnal pattern in precipitation appears to contribute to diurnal changes in AOD through the effect of precipitation scavenging. AOD exhibits diurnal patterns related to emissions in Pokhara, while it does not at the other two high-altitude sites. At EVK2-CNR, the daytime airflow carries aerosols up from lower-altitude polluted regions, leading to increasing AOD, while the other two stations are less influenced by valley winds. Surface heating influences the local convection, which further controls the vertical aerosol exchange and the diffusion rate of pollution to the surrounding areas. Fine and coarse mode particles are mixed together on the southern side of the Himalaya in spring, which may lead to the greater inter-annual difference in diurnal cycles of Ångström exponent (AE) at EVK2-CNR than that at QOMS_CAS.

Time-resolved variations in the distributions of inorganic ions, carbonaceous components, dicarboxylic acids and related compounds in atmospheric aerosols from Sapporo, northern Japan during summertime

To better understand time-resolved variations of water-soluble organic aerosols in the atmosphere, we collected atmospheric particles (TSP) every 3 h during summertime (8–10 August, 2005) in Sapporo, northern Japan. We measured inorganic ions, carbonaceous components, dicarboxylic acids, ketoacids and α-dicarbonyls in TSP. SO42− was found as the most abundant ionic species (57 ± 9% of total ions determined) followed by NH4+ and NO3−. However, none of the ionic species showed any diurnal trend throughout the campaign. Organic carbon (OC) ranged from 2.1 to 12.1 μg m−3 whereas elemental carbon (EC) was negligible in most of the samples (0.31 ± 0.56 μg m−3). Oxalic (C2) acid was the most abundant diacid species, followed by malonic (C3) and succinic (C4) acids. Water-soluble OC (WSOC), water-insoluble OC (WIOC) and OC as well as dominant diacids (C2–C4), total diacids, ketoacids and α-dicarbonyls did not show diurnal trend on 8 August, but they showed clear diurnal distributions during 9–10 August following the changes in ambient temperature (and radiation). Detailed analyses of time-resolved aerosols demonstrate that diurnal variations of organic aerosol compositions are caused by local in situ photochemical production, but are significantly superimposed by long-range atmospheric transport of aerosols, particularly when the air masses are enriched with emissions from higher plants and/or biomass burning, and their photochemical processing during the transport.

Characteristics of aerosol types during large-scale transport of air pollution over the Yellow Sea region and at Cheongwon, Korea, in 2008

Episodes of large-scale transport of airborne dust and anthropogenic pollutant particles from different sources in the East Asian continent in 2008 were identified by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite RGB (red, green, and blue)-composite images and the mass concentrations of ground level particulate matter. These particles were divided into dust, sea salt, smoke plume, and sulfate by an aerosol classification algorithm. To analyze the aerosol size distribution during large-scale transport of atmospheric aerosols, aerosol optical depth (AOD) and fine aerosol weighting (FW) of moderate imaging spectroradiometer aerosol products were used over the East Asian region. Six episodes of massive airborne dust particles, originating from sandstorms in northern China, Mongolia, and the Loess Plateau of China, were observed at Cheongwon. Classified dust aerosol types were distributed on a large-scale over the Yellow Sea region. The average PM10 and PM2.5 ratio to the total mass concentration TSP were 70% and 15%, respectively. However, the mass concentration of PM2.5 among TSP increased to as high as 23% in an episode where dust traveled in by way of an industrial area in eastern China. In the other five episodes of anthropogenic pollutant particles that flowed into the Korean Peninsula from eastern China, the anthropogenic pollutant particles were largely detected in the form of smoke over the Yellow Sea region. The average PM10 and PM2.5 ratios to TSP were 82% and 65%, respectively. The ratio of PM2.5 mass concentrations among TSP varied significantly depending on the origin and pathway of the airborne dust particles. The average AOD for the large-scale transport of anthropogenic pollutant particles in the East Asian region was measured to be 0.42 ± 0.17, which is higher in terms of the rate against atmospheric aerosols as compared with the AOD (0.36 ± 0.13) for airborne dust particles with sandstorms. In particular, the region ranging from eastern China, the Yellow Sea, and the Korean Peninsula to the Korea East Sea was characterized by high AOD distributions. In the episode of anthropogenic polluted aerosols, FW averaged 0.63 ± 0.16, a value higher than that in the episode of airborne dust particles (0.52 ± 0.13) with sandstorms, showing that fine anthropogenic pollutant particles contribute greatly to atmospheric aerosols in East Asia.

2008년 동아시아 대륙으로부터 기원이 다른 먼지와 인위적 오염 입자의 광역적 이동 사례에 대한 분석

In 2008, multiple episodes of large-scale transport of natural airborne particles and anthropogenically affected particles from different sources in the East Asian continent were identified in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite RGB-composite images and the mass concentrations of ground level particulate matters. To analyze the aerosol size distribution during the large-scale transport of atmospheric aerosols, both aerosol optical depth (AOD; proportional to the aerosol total loading in the vertical column) and fine aerosol weighting (FW; fractional contribution of fine aerosol to the total AOD) of Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol products were used over the East Asian region. The six episodes of massive natural airborne particles were observed at Cheongwon, originating from sandstorms in northern China, Mongolia and the loess plateau of China. The PM and PM stood at 70% and 16% of the total mass concentration of TSP, respectively. However, the mass concentration of PM among TSP increased as high as 23% in the episode in which they were flowing in by way f the industrial area in east China. In the other five episodes of anthropogenically affected particles that flowed into the Korean Peninsula from east China, the mass concentrations of PM and PM among TSP reached 82% and 65%, respectively. The average AOD for the large-scale transport of anthropogenically affected particle episodes in the East Asian region was measured at 0.42±0.17 compared with AOD (0.36±0.13) for the natural airborne particle episodes. Particularly, the regions covering east China, the Yellow Sea, the Korean Peninsula, and the east Korean sea were characterized by high levels of AOD. The average FW values observed during the event of anthropogenically affected aerosols (0.63±0.16) were moderately higher than those of natural airborne particles (0.52±0.13). This observation suggests that anthropogenically affected particles contribute greatly to the atmospheric aerosols in East Asia.

Atmospheric transport and deposition of anthropogenic substances from the Asia to the East China Sea

Experiments conducted aboard the R/V Hakuho Maru (Cruise KH-02-3) in the autumn of 2002 were designed to study the pathways of atmospheric aerosol transport, selected trace elements and major ions composition of particles and quantify their dry deposition over the East China Sea. We determined the concentrations of trace elements Al, Mn, Pb, Se, and Zn and major ions Na +, SO 4 2− and NO 3 − in aerosol particles. Aerosols were continuously collected in fine and coarse size fractions with a cut off at 2.5 μm. Particle number densities (volumes) were determined in four size ranges between 0.1 and <0.5 μm. High Al concentrations in the coarse mode fractions suggest continental origin of these aerosols. Weather charts revealed conducive meteorological conditions for northeastward air mass transports from the Asian continent. Back trajectory analysis results corroborated with the meteorological observations. Nss-SO 4 2−, Mn, Pb, Se and Zn were more abundant in the fine than coarse mode fraction, but NO 3 − was associated with the latter. About three-fold higher Mn/Al ratio in fine mode than in coarse aerosols (0.042 vs. 0.015, respectively) and a strong correlation between non-crustal Mn and nss-SO 4 2− suggest that fine Mn originates from industrial sources. Similarly, non-crustal Pb and Zn in the fine fraction were again significantly correlated with nss-SO 4 2− indicating major contributions from anthropogenic activities. Our results highlight the fact that atmospheric pollutants from Asia, including heavy metals and major ions, are carried to the East China Sea even during non-dusty periods. It is necessary to obtain the atmospheric deposition fluxes, wet and dry, throughout the year both by periodic and continuous atmospheric measurements in order to find the biogeochemical significance of Asian aerosols to the East China Sea and North Pacific Ocean.

Regional model for formation, dynamics and Long-range transport of atmospheric aerosol: Study of atmospheric aerosol properties in Europe

This paper provides performance evaluation of the EMEP (Cooperative Programme for the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Long-range Transmission of Air Pollutants in Europe) model, formulated in [1], and presents model calculation results. A satisfactory agreement is found between calculated and observed PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations (i.e., particulate matter with diameters smaller than 10 and 2.5 μm) and their chemical composition for different parts of Europe for the years 2001–2004. The model manages to reproduce observed regional gradients of background PM10 and PM2.5, with spatial correlations being 0.70 and 0.80, respectively, while the temporal correlation coefficients between modeled and measured daily PM vary mostly between 0.4 and 0.8 at EMEP sites. The agreement between calculated and observed aerosol number concentrations is worse than for mass concentrations. Model calculated PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations and chemical composition in Europe for the year 2004 are presented, as well as their interannual variations in the period 2000–2004. Further, contributions of different sources to PM10 and PM2.5 are estimated. Model results show that in 2004, background PM10 and PM2.5 exceeded EU critical levels and WHO recommended guidelines in a number of European regions. They also show that the transboundary transport contributes considerably to PM pollution in the European countries.
