Performance Evaluation of QUIC Protocol in Message Replication Overhead in PBFT Consensus using NS-3

The development of protocols in the ICT world to increase reliability and speed in data traffic gave an inspiration to a new protocol called the QUIC protocol. The QUIC protocol is expected to improve the performance of Transport Control Protocol (TCP). In addition, developments also occur in blockchain technology where the protocol used in this technology still uses the existing TCP protocol. In this paper, we aimed to research whether the QUIC protocol implementation in blockchain infrastructure could improve the performance of the blockchain infrastructure itself, in terms of the time required for transactions. We focus on conducting research to measure the overhead time reduction of Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) consensus by implementing the QUIC protocol, the consensus propagation process is a crucial phase in Blockchain. For simulation we used NS-3 discrete simulation environment to conduct scenario and our simulation result showed that the QUIC Protocol have potential significant performance compared to TCP Protocol in large datasets, on the other hand QUIC protocols have more room for improvement by implementing appropriate congestion algorithms.

Simulation based Analysis of TCP Variants over MANET Routing Protocols using NS2

Transport Layer Protocol Transport Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) which perform well on wired networks, but it degrades its performance in case of Ad-hoc wireless networks due to the existing problems associated such as misinterpretation of packet loss, frequent path breaks, effect of path length, misinterpretation of congestion windows, asymmetric link behaviour, uni-directional path, multipath routing and the use of sliding-window-based transmission. So, to provide reliable data communication support over MANET's, various TCP variants i.e. basically enhancement of base TCP protocols has been proposed. This research work aims to evaluating the simulation based comparison of two TCP variants, which are TCP Vegas and TCP Westwood on different routing protocols such as AODV, DSDV and DSR on the basis of average throughput, packet delivery ratio, average delay, routing overhead and average jitter with the use of ns2 simulator.

TCP is Competitive with Resource Augmentation

The well-known Transport Control Protocol (TCP) is a crucial component of the TCP/IP architecture on which the Internet is built, and is a de facto standard for reliable communication on the Internet. At the heart of the TCP protocol is its congestion control algorithm. While most practitioners believe that the TCP congestion control algorithm performs very well, a complete analysis of the congestion control algorithm is yet to be done. A lot of effort has, therefore, gone into the evaluation of different performance metrics like throughput and average latency under TCP. In this paper, we approach the problem from a different perspective and use the competitive analysis framework to provide some answers to the question “how good is the TCP/IP congestion control algorithm?” We describe how the TCP congestion control algorithm can be viewed as an online, distributed scheduling algorithm. We observe that existing lower bounds for non-clairvoyant scheduling algorithms imply that no online, distributed, non-clairvoyant algorithm can be competitive with an optimal offline algorithm if both algorithms were given the same resources. Therefore, in order to evaluate TCP using competitive analysis, we must limit the power of the adversary, or equivalently, allow TCP to have extra resources compared to an optimal, offline algorithm for the same problem. In this paper, we show that TCP is competitive to an optimal, offline algorithm provided the former is given more resources. Specifically, we prove first that for networks with a single bottleneck (or point of congestion), TCP is ${\mathcal{O}}(1)$-competitive to an optimal centralized (global) algorithm in minimizing the user-perceived latency or flow time of the sessions, provided we allow TCP ${\mathcal{O}}(1)$times as much bandwidth and ${\mathcal{O}}(1)$extra time per session. Second, we show that TCP is fair by proving that the bandwidths allocated to sessions quickly converge to fair sharing of network bandwidth.

Cross-Layer design in HSDPA system to reduce the TCP effect

This paper focuses on the interaction between the transport control protocol (TCP) layer and the radio interface in the high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) wireless system. In the literature, studies of the interaction between TCP and wireless networks are focused on the evaluation of user bit rate in the case of dedicated channels. In this paper, the interaction between TCP, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ), and scheduling techniques (especially, proportional fair scheduling) is conducted. Analytical models to evaluate HSDPA cell capacity, user bit rate, and interaction with TCP layer are presented. Even if as expected the bit rate per flow decreases strongly with the congestion frequency in the wired network, it is shown that the overall capacity achieved by HSDPA is not as affected by the TCP layer. Using this result, a method to reduce the effect of TCP on wireless network without losing much cell capacity is proposed. This method has the advantage of modifying the scheduling algorithm only and of not requiring any change to the TCP protocol.

Performance evaluation of communication networks for distributed systems

Distributed control systems are used to monitor and control distributed equipment. With the growth of communication networks, severe congestion problems appeared. To avoid dropping packets and then guarantee the needs of distributed systems in terms of performances and of quality service, some algorithms were put into Transport Control Protocol (TCP). This paper focused on network modelling, study of network dynamic behaviour and of congestion avoidance. It is possible with this network modelling to determine the influence of communication networks on the transmission of control signals. The paper also presents the modelling of a communication line in internet environment. The behaviour of the communication line is modelled as a continuous system. The behaviour of the TCP protocols is seen as a Discrete Event System (DES) model. We choose hybrid Petri Nets (PNs) as a unique modelling tool, as it gives accurate models of the complex functions found in internet connections.
