Detection and mitigation of DDoS attacks in internet of things using a fog computing hybrid approach

The introduction of a new technology has aided the exponential growth of the internet of things (IoT), allowing for the connecting of more devices in the IoT network to be made possible by the availability of quicker connections and reduced latency. As IoT networks have become more prevalent and widely used, security has become one of the fundamental requirements, and a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack poses a significant security threat due to the limited resources (CPU, memory, open source, persistent connection) that can be used to either intentionally or unintentionally increase DDOS attacks. Fog computing is proposed in this study as a framework for real-time detection and mitigation of DDoS assaults. Fog computing is accurate and quick in detecting attacks due to its proximity to IoT devices. DDOS assaults are detected using an approach that combines randomness measurement of traffic with k-nearest neighbors (KNN) machine learning algorithm. Suggested system obtained 100% detection accuracy for transmission control protocol TCP attacks, 98.79% detection accuracy for UDP attacks, and 100% detection accuracy for internet control message protocol ICMP attacks.

Implementation Based Approach to analyze MPLS and Segment Routing Traffic by Using ODL SDN Controller

Network infrastructure in the data center is getting more complicated due to heavy network traffic, by increasing a network load leads high storage consumption and high deployment cost. We have proposed an effective traffic management mechanism by combining Segment Routing and Multipath Transmission Control Protocol TCP in a logically centralized controller environment. Segment Routing and Multipath TCP is used to define a logically centralized and physically distribution for Software Defined Network SDN. Segment Routing SR technology is used for simplifying Multi-protocol Label Switching MPLS and software- defined network SDN networks. Segment Routing makes it easy to assign a dynamic traffic according to customer’s requirements through the high-level application. This work presents a comprehensive comparison between MPLS and Segment Routing Traffic Engineering, both technologies are implemented in an SDN network environment, based on GNS3 network Emulator as data network Layer, Open-Daylight as SDN Controller, and Python scripts for sending Segment IDs as a part of network Orchestrator in Application Layer.

Dumbbell is the most basic topology that can be used in almost all kind of network experiment within it or just by little expansion. While Transmission Control Protocol TCP is the basic protocol that is used for the connectivity among networks and stations. TCP major and basic goal is to provide path and services to different applications for communication. For that reason TCP has to transfer a lot of data through a communication medium that cause serious congestion problem. To calculate the congestion problem, different kind of pre-cure solutions are developer which are Loss Based Variant and Delay Based Variant. While LBV keep track of the data that is going to be passed through TCP protocol, if the data packets start dropping that means congestion occurrence which notify as a symptom, TCP CUBIC use LBV for notifying the loss. Similarly the DBV work with the acknowledgment procedure that is used in when data ACK get late with respect to its set data rate time, TCP COMPOUND/VAGAS are examples of DBV. Many algorithms have been purposed to control the congestion in different TCP variants but the loss of data packets did not completely controlled. In this paper, the congestion control algorithms are implemented and corresponding results are analyzed in Dumbbell topology, it is typically used to analyze the TCP traffic flows. Fairness of throughput is evaluated for different TCP variants using network simulator (NS-2).

TCP and UDP-based performance evaluation of proactive and reactive routing protocols using mobility models in MANETS

User datagram protocol UDP and transmission control protocol TCP are two popular transport layer protocols in infrastructure networks. The behaviour of these transport layer protocol with different mobility models and routing protocols is still not very clear. In this article, we have compared the performance of user datagram protocol UDP and transmission control protocol TCP in mobile ad hoc network MANET for optimised link state routing OLSR, and temporarily ordered routing algorithm TORA routing protocols with different mobility models like random waypoint, reference point group, and Manhattan mobility models. We have done simulations in NS2 to analyse results using the performance metrics, such as throughput, packet delivery ratio, and end-to-end delay by for different types of data traffic and mobility models. The MANET performance is analysed under the effect of simulation time, number of nodes, and speed of mobile nodes. Our work indicates that TCP performs well for throughput in some mobility model and different routing protocols than UDP. The results presented in this paper clearly indicate that the different protocols behave differently under different parameters.

Traffic differentiation and QoS provisioning for IEEE 802.11e wireless LAN

In 802.11e wireless local area network WLAN, MAC protocol is very much essential for offering multimedia quality of service QoS to WLAN users in terms of metrics like throughput, data drop, fairness and medium access delay. In addition, MAC protocol must be suitable for both user datagram protocol UDP and transmission control protocol TCP flows. In this paper, we propose a traffic differentiation and QoS provisioning technique based on DiffServ architecture for IEEE 802.11e WLAN. When a new flow arrives, it is initially provisioned with QoS using DiffServ engine. The output is fed to traffic differentiator that differentiates the traffic frames as UDP flows or TCP flows. If the distinguished traffic frame is UDP, then its contention window CW will be adjusted according to number of active uplink and downlink flows. If the distinguished traffic frame belongs to TCP, then CW will be adjusted according to the number of idle slots between two consecutive transmissions. Results indicate fair resource allocation and improved performance when compared to the other existing system.

Investigating the effects of security attacks on the performance of TCP variants and routing protocols in MANET

In mobile ad hoc networks MANET, security attack due to malicious nodes can affect normal operation of routing protocols, performance of transmission control protocol TCP, and the network at large. This paper has investigated the effects of packet drop attack on the performance of TCP variants and routing protocols. Simulation was conducted by adding different percentage of malicious nodes in the network. Results have shown that from TCP variants, Vegas outperformed Newreno and SACK with 0% malicious nodes. However, as the percentage of malicious nodes added in the network increases from 5% to 50%, Newreno and SACK performed better than Vegas. Moreover, ad hoc on-demand AODV is more robust to packet drop attack than dynamic source routing DSR. Finally, we have proposed TCP-PLDR Packet Loss Detection and Response technique, which differentiate packet loss due to congestion or malicious packet drop attack. Experimental results have shown that TCP-PLDR performed better than TCP-SACK.

Evaluation of the end-to-end TCP performance for vertical handover using intermediate switching network

Most of the traffic in today's network uses the transmission control protocol TCP as the transport layer protocol for reliable end-to-end packet delivery. However, TCP considers packet loss to be the result of network congestion which makes it unsuitable for mobile wireless communication, where sporadic and temporary packet losses are usual due to fading, shadowing, hand-off and other radio effects. During the vertical hand-off between different wireless technologies, the problem of end-to-end connection and reliability management for TCP becomes more severe. Intermediate switching network ISN is an effective framework for vertical handover between the UMTS and the WLAN network. This paper evaluates the performance of TCP over ISN-based framework. The proposed scheme uses a cross layer interaction between the data link and the transport layers to estimate TCP retransmit timeout and congestion window during handover. Simulation results establishes effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

New Method Of Measuring Tcp Performance Of Ip Network Using Bio-Computing

The measurement of performance of Internet Protocol IP network can be done by Transmission Control Protocol TCP because it guarantees send data from one end of the connection actually gets to the other end and in the same order it was send, otherwise an error is reported. There are several methods to measure the performance of TCP among these methods genetic algorithms, neural network, data mining etc, all these methods have weakness and can't reach to correct measure of TCP performance. This paper proposed a new method of measuring TCP performance for real time IP network using Biocomputing, especially molecular calculation because it provides wisdom results and it can exploit all facilities of phylogentic analysis. Applying the new method at real time on Biological Kurdish Messenger BIOKM model designed to measure the TCP performance in two types of protocols File Transfer Protocol FTP and Internet Relay Chat Daemon IRCD. This application gives very close result of TCP performance comparing with TCP performance which obtains from Little's law using same model (BIOKM), i.e. the different percentage of utilization (Busy or traffic industry) and the idle time which are obtained from a new method base on Bio-computing comparing with Little's law was (nearly) 0.13%.
