The $$\kappa $$-core and the $$\kappa $$-balancedness of TU games

AbstractWe consider transferable utility cooperative games with infinitely many players. In particular, we generalize the notions of core and balancedness, and also the Bondareva–Shapley Theorem for infinite TU games with and without restricted cooperation, to the cases where the core consists of $$\kappa $$ κ -additive set functions. Our generalized Bondareva–Shapley Theorem extends previous results by Bondareva (Problemy Kibernetiki 10:119–139, 1963), Shapley (Naval Res Logist Q 14:453–460, 1967), Schmeidler (On balanced games with infinitely many players, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem, 1967), Faigle (Zeitschrift für Oper Res 33(6):405–422, 1989), Kannai (J Math Anal Appl 27:227–240, 1969; The core and balancedness, handbook of game theory with economic applications, North-Holland, 1992), Pintér (Linear Algebra Appl 434(3):688–693, 2011) and Bartl and Pintér (Oper Res Lett 51(2):153–158, 2023).

Cooperation in an Arrow-Karlin Type Supply Chain

In this paper we apply cooperative game theory concepts to analyze vertical supply chains. The bullwhip effect in a two-stage supply chain (supplier-manufacturer) in the framework of the Arrow-Karlin model with linear-convex cost functions is considered. It is assumed that both firms minimize their relevant costs, and two cases are examined: the supplier and the manufacturer minimize their relevant costs in a decentralized and in a centralized (cooperative) way. The question of how to share the savings of the decreased bullwhip effect in the centralized (cooperative) model is answered by transferable utility cooperative game theory tools.

On egalitarian values for cooperative games with level structures

In this paper we extend the equal division and the equal surplus division values for transferable utility cooperative games to the more general setup of transferable utility cooperative games with level structures. In the case of the equal surplus division value we propose three possible extensions, one of which has already been described in the literature. We provide axiomatic characterizations of the values considered, apply them to a particular cost sharing problem and compare them in the framework of such an application.

On balanced games with infinitely many players: Revisiting Schmeidler's result

We consider transferable utility cooperative games with infinitely many players and the core understood in the space of bounded additive set functions. We show that, if a game is bounded below, then its core is non-empty if and only if the game is balanced. This finding generalizes Schmeidler (1967) “On Balanced Games with Infinitely Many Players”, where the game is assumed to be non-negative. We also generalize Schmeidler's (1967) result to the case of restricted cooperation too.

Some game theoretic marketing attribution models

In this paper, we propose and analyse two game theoretic approaches to design attribution mechanisms for multi-channel marketing campaigns. Both approaches are based on a key performance index function that provides the benefit obtained in each of the observed paths to conversion. The first approach considers the problem as a cooperative transferable utility game, and the proposed attribution mechanisms are based on the Shapley value. The second approach models the problem as a bankruptcy problem and the proposed attribution mechanism is based on the constrained equal-losses rule. We also extend the above approaches to deal with the cases in which the position or the repetition of the channels on the paths to conversion are taken into account.

Allocation rules for multi-choice games with a permission tree structure

We consider multi-choice cooperative games with a permission tree structure. Multi-choice games are a generalization of cooperative transferable utility games in which each player has several activity levels. In addition, a permission tree structure models a situation in which a player needs permission from another player to cooperate. In this framework, the influence of a permission structure on the possibility of cooperation may have several interpretations depending on the context. In this paper, we investigate several of these interpretations and introduce for each of them a new allocation rule that we axiomatically characterize.

The average tree value for hypergraph games

We consider transferable utility cooperative games (TU games) with limited cooperation introduced by a hypergraph communication structure, the so-called hypergraph games. A hypergraph communication structure is given by a collection of coalitions, the hyperlinks of the hypergraph, for which it is assumed that only coalitions that are hyperlinks or connected unions of hyperlinks are able to cooperate and realize their worth. We introduce the average tree value for hypergraph games, which assigns to each player the average of the player’s marginal contributions with respect to a particular collection of rooted spanning trees of the hypergraph, and study its properties. We show that the average tree value is stable on the subclass of superadditive cycle-free hypergraph games. We also provide axiomatizations of the average tree value on the subclasses of cycle-free hypergraph games, hypertree games, and cycle hypergraph games.

The degree measure as utility function over positions in graphs and digraphs

We explore the possibility to compare positions in different directed and undirected graphs. We assume an agent to have a preference relation over positions in different weighted (directed and undirected) graphs, stating pairwise comparisons between these positions. Ideally, such a preference relation can be expressed by a utility function, where positions are evaluated by their assigned ‘utility’. Extending preference relations over the mixture set containing all lotteries over graph positions, we specify axioms on preferences that allow them to be represented by von Neumann–Morgenstern expected utility functions. For directed graphs, we show that the only vNM expected utility function that satisfies a certain risk neutrality, is the function that assigns to every position in a weighted directed graph the same linear combination of its outdegree and indegree. For undirected graphs, we show that the only vNM expected utility function that satisfies this risk neutrality, is the degree measure that assigns to every position in a weighted graph its degree. In this way, our results provide a utility foundation for degree centrality as a vNM expected utility function. We obtain the results following the utility approach to the Shapley value for cooperative transferable utility games of Roth (1977b), noticing that undirected graphs form a subclass of cooperative games as expressed by Deng and Papadimitriou (1994). For directed graphs, we extend this result to a class of generalized games. Using the relation between cooperative games and networks, we apply our results to some applications in Economics and Operations Research.

EGALITARIAN SOLUTION FOR GAMES WITH DISCRETE SIDE PAYMENT

In this paper, we study the egalitarian solution for games with discrete side payment, where the characteristic function is integer-valued and payoffs of players are integral vectors. The egalitarian solution, introduced by Dutta and Ray in 1989, is a solution concept for transferable utility cooperative games in characteristic form, which combines commitment for egalitarianism and promotion of indivisual interests in a consistent manner. We first point out that the nice properties of the egalitarian solution (in the continuous case) do not extend to games with discrete side payment. Then we show that the Lorenz stable set, which may be regarded a variant of the egalitarian solution, has nice properties such as the Davis and Maschler reduced game property and the converse reduced game property. For the proofs we utilize recent results in discrete convex analysis on decreasing minimization on an M-convex set investigated by Frank and Murota.

The Prekernel of Cooperative Games with Alpha-Excess

In this paper, we introduce a new approach to measure the dissatisfaction for coalitions of players in cooperative transferable utility games. This is done by considering affine (and convex) combinations of the classical excess and the proportional excess. Based on this so-called alpha-excess, we defi ne new solution concepts for cooperative games, such as the alpha-prenucleolus and the alpha-prekernel. The classical prenucleolus and prekernel are a special case. We characterize the alpha-prekernel by strong stability and the alpha-balanced surplus property. Also, we show that the payoff vector generated by the alpha-prenucleolus belongs to the alpha-prekernel.

Allocation Rules for Multi-choice Games with a Permission Tree Structure

We consider multi-choice cooperative games with a permission tree structure. Multi-choice games are a generalization of a cooperative transferable utility games in which each player has several activity levels. In addition, a permission tree structure models a situation in which a player needs permission from another player to cooperate. In this framework, the influence of a permission structure on the possibility of cooperation may have several interpretations depending on the context. In this paper, we investigate several of these interpretations and introduce for each of them a new allocation rule that we axiomatically characterize.

Public transport transfers assessment via transferable utility games and Shapley value approximation

The importance of transfer points in public transport networks is estimated by exploiting an approach based on transferable utility cooperative games, which integrates the network topology and the demands. Transfer points are defined as clusters of nearby stops, from which it is easily possible to switch between routes. The methodology is based on a solution concept from cooperative game theory, known as Shapley value. A special formulation of the game is developed for public transport networks with an emphasis on transfers. Based on such a game, the Shapley value is evaluated as an attribute of each transfer point to measure its relative importance: the greater the associated value, the larger the relevance. Due to the computational requirements of the Shapley value calculation for large-size networks, a Monte Carlo approximation is investigated and adopted. A case study of a real-world network is presented to demonstrate the model’s viability.

On egalitarian values for cooperative games with a priori unions

In this paper, we extend the equal division and the equal surplus division values for transferable utility cooperative games to the more general setup of transferable utility cooperative games with a priori unions. In the case of the equal surplus division value we propose three possible extensions. We provide axiomatic characterizations of the new values. Furthermore, we apply the proposed modifications to a particular motivating example and compare the numerical results with those obtained with the original values.

The Average Tree Value for Hypergraph Games

We consider transferable utility cooperative games (TU games) with limited cooperation introduced by hypergraph communication structure, the so-called hypergraph games. On the Internal and External Stability of Coalitions and Application to Group Purchasing Organizations

Two new notions of stability of coalitions, based on the idea of exclusion or integration of players depending on how they affect allocations, are introduced for cooperative transferable utility games. The first one, called internal stability, requires that no coalition member would find that her departure from the coalition would improve her allocation or those of all her partners. The second one, called external stability, requires that coalitions members do not wish to recruit a new partner willing to join the coalition, since her arrival would hurt some of them. As an application of these two notions, we study the stability of Group Purchasing Organizations using the Shapley value to allocate costs between buyers. Our main results suggest that, when all buyers are initially alone, while small buyers will form internally and externally stable Group Purchasing Organizations to benefit from the best price discount, big buyers will be mutually exclusive and may cooperate with only small buyers.

The Shapley value, the Proper Shapley value, and sharing rules for cooperative ventures

In this note, we discuss two solutions for cooperative transferable utility games, namely the Shapley value and the Proper Shapley value. We characterize positive Proper Shapley values by affine invariance and by an axiom that requires proportional allocation of the surplus according to the individual singleton worths in generalized joint venture games. As a counterpart, we show that affine invariance and an axiom that requires equal allocation of the surplus in generalized joint venture games characterize the Shapley value.

The weighted Shapley-egalitarian value for cooperative games with a coalition structure

In this paper, we study a solution, the weighted Shapley-egalitarian value, for transferable utility cooperative games with a coalition structure. It first distributes the worth of the grand coalition among a priori unions of the coalition structure with the weighted Shapley value, with the sizes of unions acting as weights. And then, it allocates the payoff of every union among its players with the equal division value, thus players inside a union exhibit a greater degree of solidarity than players in different unions. We give several equivalent definitions of the value, particularly show its relationship with the collective value. We apply the value to the recent field of airport cost pooling game, and find that the Shapley value therein can be viewed as a special case of our value, if we view an airport cost pooling game as a transferable utility cooperative game with a coalition structure. Finally, to further highlight the differences between our value and the collective value, we provide parallel axiomatizations of the two values, by replacing the collective balanced contributions axiom with two intuitive axioms.

Novel equal division values based on players’ excess vectors and their applications to logistics enterprise coalitions

Some sub-coalitions can not be formed or fail to satisfy the superadditivity in many realistic cooperative transferable utility (TU) games, which particularly exists in the logistics service industry. To exploit some novel solutions for addressing these TU games, we firstly propose again the equal surplus division value based on the least square method and players’ common excess vector, and then introduce the weighted equal surplus division value. Both of them belong to the family of the least square values. Inspired by the fact that many TU games base the profit distribution strategies not only on the egalitarian principle but also on the utility principle, the equal contribution division value and the weighted equal contribution division value based on the least square method and players’ contribution excess vector are spontaneously generated. An algorithm is described to make the four solutions proposed in this paper satisfy the property of individual rationality. Finally, to show the advantages, the practicability and the rationality of the four solutions, a practical example about the profit distribution strategy of a logistics enterprise coalition is illustrated and the contrastive analysis among them is given.

Sharing a River with Downstream Externalities

We consider the problem of efficient emission abatement in a multi polluter setting, where agents are located along a river in which net emissions accumulate and induce negative externalities to downstream riparians. Assuming a cooperative transferable utility game, we seek welfare distributions that satisfy all agents’ participation constraints and, in addition, a fairness constraint implying that no coalition of agents should be better off than it were if all non-members of the coalition would not pollute the river at all. We show that the downstream incremental distribution, as introduced by Ambec and Sprumont (2002), is the only welfare distribution satisfying both constraints. In addition, we show that this result holds true for numerous extensions of our model.

Procedural and optimization implementation of the weighted ENSC value

The main purpose of this article is to introduce the weighted ENSC value for cooperative transferable utility games which takes into account players’ selfishness about the payoff allocations. Similar to Shapley’s idea of a one-by-one formation of the grand coalition [Shapley (1953)], we first provide a procedural implementation of the weighted ENSC value depending on players’ selfishness as well as their marginal contributions to the grand coalition. Second, in the spirit of the nucleolus [Schmeidler (1969)], we prove that the weighted ENSC value is obtained by lexicographically minimizing a complaint vector associated with a new complaint criterion relying on players’ selfishness.
