Traversing the Challenges of Community Engagement in South Africa: Emerging Researchers’ Perspectives

With the growing emphasis being placed on community engagement, many emerging scholars have found themselves in the field with much to learn beyond the research that they are conducting. Community engagement is guided by principles such as the mutual exchange of knowledge, collaboratively identifying community priorities and an ongoing focus on strengthening and sustaining communities. In practice, community engagement is fraught with various challenges that need to be navigated. These challenges present themselves in different ways to different researchers. In this article, we draw on our experiences as three emerging researchers navigating community-engaged research across two geographic spaces in South Africa, namely, the Western Cape and Gauteng, two of the country’s nine national provinces. The objectives of this article are to explore our experiences of relationship building, to determine the role our positionalities have played in our engaged scholarship, and to explore feelings of disconnectedness as young academics. Following a qualitative reflexive approach, we identified three themes that speak to these objectives, namely, navigating newcomer status and building relationships in community-engaged spaces, reflections on researcher positionality in the field, and the dilemma of (dis)connectedness in engaged scholarship. Our findings highlight the need for support such as mentorship from experienced community-engaged scholars, resources for establishing community connections, guidance in navigating cultural nuances, and training for effective communication and relationship building in communities.

Communication Self-Efficacy and Job Satisfaction among Nurses during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Introduction. The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to various challenges for healthcare workers, including nurses. Nurses play a critical role in the fight against this disease, and their communication of self-efficacy and job satisfaction has garnered significant attention. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between communication self-efficacy and job satisfaction of Iranian nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. This study was conducted using a cross-sectional design. A total of 500 nurses working in hospitals in Iran were selected using a convenience sampling method. The communication self-efficacy scale and the job satisfaction scale were used to collect data. Results. The study found that nurses with higher communication self-efficacy exhibited better performance and job satisfaction in various work challenges (r = 0.56, p<0.001). However, nurses holding a master’s degree or higher reported the lowest average communication self-efficacy and job satisfaction scores during the COVID-19 epidemic. The study also explored the impact of shift work on job satisfaction among nurses and found that nurses working exclusively on the morning shift reported the highest average job satisfaction score. Conclusion. The findings of this study suggest that communication self-efficacy is an important factor in predicting job satisfaction among Iranian nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is recommended that healthcare organizations provide effective communication training sessions and mental health interventions to enhance nurses’ communication self-efficacy and job satisfaction. This can ultimately lead to improved performance and better patient outcomes.

Optimization of Interpersonal Communication Training for Effective Communication in TBCC Cares in the Banyuwangi District

Background: Tuberculosis (TBC) is the biggest infectious disease killer in the world. Prevention of TB transmission requires cross-sectoral cooperation by involving the community and establishing two-way communication so that comfortable communication and discussion with each other is formed so that the delivery of health messages in TB prevention and treatment is more effective. One of the community-based approaches to prevent TB can be use a communal approach is health cadres. Aims: This study aims to optimize effectiveness communication in TBC Cares with conducting formation Cadres and interpersonal communication training. Methods: The study methods used are qualitative and quantitative (mixed methods). Quantitative method was conducted by questionnaire distributed to measure the knowledge of cadres. Qualitative method was conducted by focus group discussions (FGD) aims to enhance the learning experience of TBC cadres and cadres to optimize the prevention and treatment regarding tuberculosis to patient, families the patient of TB, and the community. The data was analysed using Paired T Test for Cadre’s knowledge. Results: Based on the result score Cadre knowledge on pre-test (mean=74,40, SD=16,85) and post-test (mean=86,80, SD=12,81) and (p=0.000). Conclusion: These results show that there is an effect of increasing knowledge on pre and post the intervention. Cadres’ Interpersonal communication training can be used alternative way to optimize in prevention and education TBC cadres in Banyuwangi Regency.

Program Pelatihan Empati Sebagai Strategi Mengurangi Perilaku Bullying pada Remaja

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of various empathy training programs, including Role-Playing, Effective Communication Training, Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs), Peer Mediation Programs, Emotional Literacy Training, and Anti-Bullying Training Programs, in reducing bullying behavior among adolescents. Through a literature review approach, the study examines the impact and implementation of each program in developing empathy and social skills. The findings indicate that these programs can significantly reduce bullying incidents, although each program has its limitations, such as reliance on active student participation and resource constraints. This study emphasizes the importance of continuous training and school support for effective implementation. This research provides new insights for educators, practitioners, and policymakers in designing effective strategies to reduce bullying behavior and promote the development of empathy among adolescents

Reform of hospital financing: revenue-independent flat rates for acute inpatient obstetrics facilities

Patient safety is the tenth national health target so-called strategic objectives in Germany. Although the topic has been on the health policy agenda for more than 20 years, the need for action remains high. In inpatient care, communication, both between professional groups and with patients, has a great impact on the reduction of so-called preventable adverse events. In a health services research project funded by the Innovation Fund of the G-BA (‚TeamBaby‘ grant number 01VSF18023), the effects of communication training on satisfaction, perceived communication skills and the reduction of preventable adverse events in obstetrics were examined. Even time-limited training sessions resulted in positive effects. Safe obstetric care, in addition to the physical health of mother and child, enhances satisfaction and strengthens family bonding for the entire family. It also increases satisfaction among professional teams. The regular implementation of communication training within working hours is therefore recommended to increase patient safety.

Interpersonal relationships of the nursing team in the work environment according to nursing students: A qualitative study

AimTo explore the perceptions of nursing students from Brazilian universities about the interpersonal relationship of the nursing team in the work environment. BackgroundHealthcare institutions are complex entities where diverse professionals from different educational backgrounds work together to provide high-quality care to the population. The effective coordination of services within these institutions is closely linked to the interpersonal relationships among these different healthcare professionals. Nurses play a crucial role as members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, acting as fundamental links between other professionals and patients. DesignThis is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. MethodsAn online, open-ended questionnaire was used. A total of 30 nursing students participated in the study. ResultsData were organized in two themes: (1) Interpersonal relationships of the nursing team and (2) Improving interpersonal relationships of the nursing team. Also, eight sub-themes were identified: Conflict dynamics within the nursing team, Hierarchical issues, Lack of communication, Impact of workplace interpersonal relationships on nursing students, Valuing the profession, Understanding role boundaries, Training in effective communication and conflict management, and Curricular reform. ConclusionsBlurred boundaries between professional roles, lack of respect, ineffective communication, hierarchical issues, and conflicts, were identified. Of particular concern was the limited interaction observed between the nursing team and multidisciplinary/support teams. Inadequate interpersonal relationships between members of the health team reflect negatively on nursing students during their clinical placements. These findings underscore the urgent need for interventions aimed at improving interpersonal relationships within nursing teams.

Empathic communication training in healthcare using Virtual Patients

This project aims to build effective empathic communication training for healthcare students using conversational AI and Virtual Patients. An umbrella review of empathy training in healthcare will be used to create a framework for designing effective empathy training. We will investigate two different implementations of Virtual Patients through a pilot study with speech-language therapy students from the University of Auckland. We will engage students, educators and patients in theexperimental studies, following co-design and design-based research methodology.

MANAGEMENT OF STRATEGIC CHANGE AT COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF VIHIGA, KENYA

The County Government of Vihiga, Kenya aligns its governance with a resonating change management strategy geared towards progressive socio-economic development. With the advent of devolution and county governments in Kenya in 2013, the efficient management of strategic changes has been a key area of focus.Implementing strategic change management at the County Government of Vihiga is vital for better performance in economic, health, education, and other sectors. It ensures flexibility and adaptability to continually changing circumstances, simultaneously maintaining transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery. However, as with any evolving system, strategic change management faces challenges in this county. This comprises resistance to change among employees, inadequate resources, and unstable political environment. The County Government of Vihiga must be committed to change leadership, capacity building, resource allocation, managing resistance to change, and creating an environment that facilitates continuous improvement.Reviewed studies have focused mainly on strategic change management in private institutions hence there is little empirical data on the application of strategic change management in public institutions, a gap this research aims to bridge. The specific objectives of the study are to establish change management practices adopted by Vihiga County Government,to determine challenges faced by Vihiga County Government in managing strategic change and to ascertain the measures Vihiga County Government has put in place to mitigate challenges of management of strategic change. The research was anchored on open systems theory, chaos and complexity theory and contingency theory. Primary data was collected by use of interview schedule and analysed through content analysis. The results revealed that the county uses various strategies for strategic change management which include employee participation, effective communication active leadership and training. Similarly, it was discovered that the notable challenges encountered in managing strategic change included employee resistance, middle management resistance due to perceived loss of power and poor resource allocation. The main mitigation measures that the county management used to mitigate these drawbacks encompassed the creation of strong synergy and management monitoring of the change implementation process. The study concludes thatCurrently Vihiga County Government has successfully navigated through the change management. It recommends that,there is need to introduce change in a humane way, and if need be, set a guiding and counselling office to enable employees to cope with the change.

Implementation of Effective Communication as an Effort to Improve The Quality of Service in North Sumatra University Dental and Oral Hospital

Communication is the most important aspect of collaboration between professionals consisting of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical records, and patients. In fact, 70–80% of errors in health services are caused by poor communication and a lack of understanding between team members or between professionals. Lack of communication can also cause delays in serving patients and errors in handling patients. One of the ways to provide Effective Communication training is through using the Situation Background Assessment Recommendation (SBAR) method. The purpose of this study was to create and correct effective communication to improve service quality and patient safety at the Dental and Oral Hospital of North Sumatra University. The research method used a qualitative approach, and the informants were all the staff or employees at the Dental and Oral Hospital of North Sumatra University. Methods of data collection were carried out by direct observation and giving questionnaires before and after the communication training. The changes observed or measured in the research were before and after the SBAR training, that is the increase and the change in the behaviour of the officers. The result of this study shows that respondents had fairly good percentage results, with knowledge of 73.65% and applying effective communication with the SBAR method of 57.49%. Concluded that Therefore, effective communication is one of the indicators for monitoring hospital quality and patient safety.

Organizational capacity building of SMA Muhammadiyah III Yogyakarta through effective communication

Good communication between teachers and students will create a fun teaching and learning process and establish positive cooperation in efforts to develop school organizational capacity. In order to achieve this, the community service aims to support teachers in the learning process through effective organizational communication training. The implementation of this program begins with an initial assessment followed by increasing awareness regarding leadership and training in organizational capacity building with an effective organizational communication approach. The results of this program shows an increase in understanding and application of the importance of communication skills in school organizations by 85%. At the end of the program, a grant was given in the form of a sound system as an internal communication medium.

Language Access for Families With Limited English Proficiency Why Does It Matter?

This manuscript guides school nurses in addressing the unique needs of U.S. school-aged students and families with limited English proficiency (LEP). Owing to the increasing ethnic and racial diversity in U.S. K-12 schools, school nurses will likely encounter children and families with LEP. Students with LEP may be part of a family which immigrated to this country as permanent residents, are refugees, or asylum seekers. Some may be from migrant families who move throughout the region or country for work. School health services, including nursing services, may be the first and only health resource to which these children have consistent access. The availability and importance of language access services are highlighted, as well as tips for school nurses to advocate for language access resources, training for effective communication, understanding the legal landscape, and addressing cultural beliefs that influence health behaviors. Advocacy toward identifying the distinctive needs of families with LEP aims to help school nurses target equitable health outcomes.

Perspectives of registered nurses towards communication with family members of hospitalized older people with a tracheostomy: a qualitative study

PurposeThis paper aims to explore the perspectives of registered nurses towards communication with family members of older people with a tracheostomy.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative design was used. Ten participants were recruited through purposive sampling. Face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were used in collecting data. Data were analysed by thematic analysis.FindingsThe four themes identified were as follows: communication by considering time difference; considering factors related to effective communication, either family member–related factors or registered nurse–related factors; strategies of communicating to support family members, such as giving an opportunity to ask for accurate information, communicating to build self-confidence and communicating through cases; and using the art of communication by speaking slowly and clearly, using colloquialisms, being steady and calm, as well as using positive language.Practical implicationsHaving strategies and using the art of communication are important to help family members in obtaining accurate information and in building self-confidence in the care of older people.Originality/valueThe paper indicates that registered nurses consider factors related to communication, and they gave more information to family members using effective strategies and the art of communication. Therefore, effective communication training to nursing teams should be performed to promote adherence to treatment and family members’ satisfaction.

Conversation Analysis of Clients' Active Resistance to Veterinarians' Proposals for Long-Term Dietary Change in Companion Animal Practice in Ontario, Canada.

The impact of nutrition on animal health requires effective diet-related treatment recommendations in veterinary medicine. Despite low reported rates of veterinary clients' adherence with dietary recommendations, little is known about how clients' resistance to nutritional proposals is managed in the talk of veterinary consultations. This conversation-analytic study investigated clients' active resistance to veterinarians' proposals for long-term changes to cats' and dogs' diets in 23 segments from 21 videotaped appointments in Ontario, Canada. Clients' accounts suggested the proposals themselves or nutritional modifications were unnecessary, inappropriate, or unfeasible, most often based on patients' food preferences, multi-pet feeding issues, current use of equivalent strategies, or current enactment of the proposed changes. Resistance arose when veterinarians constructed proposals without first gathering relevant diet- and patient-related information, soliciting clients' perspectives, or educating them about the benefits of recommended changes. Veterinarians subsequently accommodated clients' concerns more often when resistance involved patient- or client-related issues rather than clients' lack of medical knowledge. The design of subsequent proposals accepted by clients frequently replaced dietary changes in the initial proposals with nutritional or non-nutritional alternatives and oriented to uncertainty about adherence. This study provides evidence-based findings for developing effective communication training and practice guidelines in nutritional assessment and shared decision-making.

Patient Safety: A Systematic Review of the Literature with Evidence based Measures to Improve Patient Safety in Healthcare Settings

Patient safety is a crucial component of healthcare delivery aimed at minimizing and preventing medical errors that can cause harm or injury to patients. This systematic review identified 50 studies that evaluated interventions aimed at improving patient safety in healthcare settings, including medication reconciliation, surgical safety checklists, hand hygiene programs, and electronic health record systems. The findings suggest that most interventions led to significant improvements in patient safety outcomes, including a reduction in adverse events and preventable harm. Evidence-based measures to improve patient safety include effective communication, hand hygiene, medication safety, patient identification, fall prevention, surgical safety, infection control, and staff training. The implementation of these measures can help improve patient safety and reduce the risk of harm to patients in healthcare settings. Further research is needed to identify the most effective interventions and to evaluate the long-term impact of these interventions on patient outcomes. Patient Complaints to the Saudi Medical Call Center: Representative Response Strategies

ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate the strategies and modifications employed by the Complaint Unit Representatives (CURs) in response to complaints recorded in the formal workplace of a medical institution in the Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH). A pragmatic discourse analytic approach was adopted to construct an analytical framework for authentic spoken complaint responses in the Saudi medical institution context. The data were randomly collected from 80 recorded phone conversations between patients and the CURs. It was transcribed verbatim, imported into MAXQDA for qualitative analysis of codes categorizations, and then into SPSS for statistical analysis. The findings showed that the staff employed a balance of transactional and interpersonal approaches in their response strategies, which varied in both quantity and quality depending on the phase or the major sequence of the moves made in the complaint call. Specifically, more transactional strategies were used during the main portion of a complaint and in the medial phase, while more interpersonal strategies were employed during the initial and the final phases of the call. The findings also showed that the CURs tended to downgrade and mitigate their responses to patients’ complaints, and they never used upgraders. The influence of the religious culture was also noticeable in their use of downgraders, including optimistic devices and religious expressions. These findings reveal practical implications that can aid the quality team of the Complaint Unit (CU) in assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of the CURs’ response strategies when handling complaints, and in providing more effective communication training as needed.

Communication Training Helps to Reduce Burnout During COVID-19 Pandemic.

To determine the effectiveness of communication training and its impact on burnout among healthcare providers (physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners), in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic. To evaluate the effectiveness of communication training on burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare providers participating in a Communication in Healthcare (CIH) module between October 31, 2019, through February 20, 2020, were identified using a scanned sign-in sheet. A 3-question online survey regarding the utilization of communication skills during the COVID-19 pandemic was sent via email. An ordinal scale was used to rate the effectiveness of the training on subsequent burnout and work satisfaction during the pandemic. Of the 98 surveys distributed via email, a total of 33 participants completed the survey. Seventy-three percent of respondents agreed that communication training helped prevent burnout, and 39% strongly agreed that the modules improved work satisfaction. Our study found communication training was effective in reducing burnout in healthcare providers, in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants felt the communication tools learned from the training modules were useful in improving work satisfaction and communication with patients during the pandemic.

Changes in the communicative skills of young people as a result of a communication training.

To analyze the effect of communication training developed for adolescents on the youth's communication skills. Forty-one young people participated in the study and were divided into two groups. Group I received intervention - communication training for five weeks; Group II - were guided on the importance of voice for communication. Participants had their communication skills assessed before/after interventions through a self-administered questionnaire, answered by the participant and parents. Both groups had oral presentations recorded on video, which were analyzed by speech therapists through the evaluation of the communication profile, listing the aspects that should be observed as a point of strength/opportunity for improvement. Association between qualitative variables was assessed using Fischer's exact test, Pearson's chi-square test, McNemar's test, and McNemar-Bowker's test. To compare groups, paired t-test and t-test for independent samples, p level <0.05, were used. The analysis of questionnaires showed improvement in GI in two of the four skills assessed and no difference for GII. The video evaluations showed a significant difference between the groups in terms of eye contact and speech velocity. This study points out that the communication training method applied to young people might improve communicative skills, providing some insights into their communication strengths and potential areas for development.
