TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE IN THE TENGGER COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVE OF ACCULTURATION THEORY

<p>This research aims to analyze the acculturation of traditional marriage practices within the Tengger community, specifically investigating whether there has been a shift in customary marriage procedures following the introduction of Hinduism. To address this research question, the researcher collected data on two key traditional marriage ceremonies: Walagara and Pewawihan. In Tengger custom, these ceremonies are essential for validating a marriage. Without them, the marriage is neither recognized nor legalized according to customary law. This raises a significant inquiry on whether Walagara and Pewawihan are purely traditional customs or have been acculturated with Hindu values. The findings indicate that while Walagara and Pewawihan remain part of Tengger's heritage, their implementation has changed. Specifically, the prayers recited during these ceremonies now incorporate Hindu elements. The researcher concludes that Walagara and Pewawihan consist of two distinct components: the ritual movements, which align with Tengger custom, and the prayers, which reflect Hindu influences.</p>

The Arab Woman In Israel In A Tight Spot: Academia And Career Versus Marriage And Family

This study concentrates on the impact that marriage has on the personal development of Israeli Arab women in the field of higher education and employment. These women are a minority within a minority as they belong to Israel’s Arab ethnic community but are also a gender-segregated minority within their patriarchal society. Whereas other studies touch on the overall struggle of Arab women to reach personal fulfillment despite intense family life, the focus of this study is specifically the marriage itself as a watershed in the young Arab Israeli woman’s life. To fully understand the challenges constructed by marriage, 25 Israeli Arab women were interviewed in-depth on a university campus. The findings indicate the negative effect that traditional marriage has on these women’s personal futures. The study concludes on the optimistic note that the interviews also revealed a deep awareness among young Arab women of their personal rights and liberties.

Analysis of Islamic Legal Anthropology on The Marriage Traditions of The Mbojo and Samawa Tribes

This research aims to describe the similarities and differences in the traditional marriages of the Mbojo and Samawa tribes, as well as how Islamic legal anthropology analyzes these aspects. The study employs qualitative research through field research methods. A qualitative approach is used to observe and convey information that will produce clear data, based on community activities regarding how they are subjects within the research object. This research also contains comparative elements, which involve comparing two situations, events, and occurrences. In this case, the researcher applies a comparative method to the traditional marriages of the Mbojo tribe (Bima) and the Samawa tribe (Sumbawa). Data collection techniques in this study are obtained through direct observation in the field and interviews. Additionally, the data used in this research is supported by literature sources such as books, theses, journals, internet media, and others that support the research. The results of this study indicate that one of the purposes of marriage is to create a family that is peaceful, secure, and harmonious, in line with the concept of sakinah mawaddah wa rahmah. Marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman. In anthropology, culture is a system of ideas, actions, and human works that encompass beliefs, arts, morals, laws, and customs. In Indonesia, each region has its own unique culture, including in wedding ceremonies, such as those of the Mbojo tribe in Bima and the Samawa tribe in Sumbawa. Although they have different names and processes, the traditions of peta kapanca and barodak rapacar share the same purpose: to purify oneself in order to achieve a good and harmonious household.

Akulturasi Budaya Batak Angkola dan Batak Toba Dalam Upacara Adat Perkawinan di Desa Padang Parsadaan, Kecamatan Pangaribuan

Traditional marriage ceremonies in the Bataknese community, especially Batak Angkola and Batak Toba have very unique rules and traditions. Exogamus marriage in Batak Toba forbid marriages between the same and as well as Batak Angkola which applies a patrilineal system with the “jujur” custom involving the payment of sinamot from the man to the woman,the main reason of marriage for the society of Batak Angkola and Batak Toba are to reach prosperty (hamoraon) owning many descendants (hagabeon) and obtaining honor (hasangapon). Acculturation is the process where elements from two or more diff cultural grups interact and live together then integrate into their own culture without losing their original cultural identity. In the village Padang Parsadaan, cultural acculturation happens between the culture Batak Angkola and Batak Toba in the traditional marriage ceremonies, initially society has resistance to this acculturation, but after a long disscussion, cultural integration started to be accepted and applied. This acculturation process arms to create social harmony but still maintaining their own cultural identity. This observation uses descriptive qualitive method with analytical approach for understanding the process and impact of acculturation. The result of this observation shows that acculturation enrich the social life and societies culture and increasing the intercultural tolerance in the village Padang Parsadaan. Acculturation also helps younger generation undestand and adapt to changes, however acculturation needs effort and support together from society and traditional leaders to over obstacles and ensuring the continuation of cultural acculturation especially traditional marriage ceremonies.

Orang Haria and Marriage Customs: The Reality of Socio-cultural Order in the Maluku Archipelago

Maluku is an archipelagic region consisting of both large and small islands surrounded by the ocean. The community interaction dynamics on and between these islands are shaped by the knowledge or mindsets based on each community’s cultural background or traditional customs, which are institutionalized within every individual and within the collective community of its adherents. Specifically, marriage customs, whether it involves payment of a dowry or traditional legitimization, integrates two individuals with different identity backgrounds into the social environment on a micro-scale (family/mataruma) and a macro scale (village/community). The people of Haria identify themselves as part of Negeri Haria, one of the traditional villages on Saparua Island, Maluku, which has meaningful marriage traditions aimed at establishing social and cultural order. These marriage customs signal to family members and ancestors about the marriage events of descendants, visible from the traditional process of introducing a wife, whether from within or outside Negeri Haria, and the obligations of a man who marries and takes a daughter from Negeri Haria to merge with his identity (family/original village). The various conditions include kain berkat (negeri wealth) meja kaweng, marriage dowry payment, and hatu mata. Additionally, there are traditions of changing the surname of a child born out of wedlock (child reallocation) or adopting someone else’s anak (arken anak). The young generation of Negeri Haria, generally needs more precise knowledge about marriage customs to form social order for newly established households. This writing aims to reveal the objective reality of the community’s oral traditions in written form, preserved for cultural conservation purposes. The reality was discovered using qualitative research, such as observation and interview methods. Hence, efforts to preserve the cultural values of this indigenous community involve tracing stories from traditional leaders who possess the knowledge and perform the ritual processes of marriage customs. Pot breaking in the wedding ritual of Don Cossacks: areal variations in the semantics and pragmatics of action

The breaking of dishes at weddings is known to all Slavs. It accompanies the most important stages of the ritual and symbolizes the change of the young couple’s social status. This action in the Don wedding tradition reveals a number of meanings, which are united by the symbolism of the ritual transition of the wedding participants, especially the bride, as well as the newlywed and their mothers. Often “pot beating” is part of the whole micro rites, including various manipulations with dishes and its fragments. Sweeping up the shards of broken crockery is the most stable element of the ritual, which can be combined with other components and performed as an independent action. In the memory of old residents of Don villages and farms for a long time there were actions (breaking a pot on the belly of the mothers-in-law, putting a chicken or a rooster into it, throwing crock-pots into the fire and jumping over it), behind which there are archaic folk beliefs related to the conclusion of marriage. However, the general orientation of breaking dishes in the Don tradition changes in the direction of increasing entertainment and competition.

Makna Simbolik Appabbajikang Bunting Pada Prosesi Pernikahan Adat Makassar di Desa Pattallikang Kabupaten Gowa

This research is entitled The Symbolic Meaning of Appabbajikang bunting in the Makassar Traditional Wedding Procession in Pattallikang Village, Gowa Regency. This research aims to describe the icons, indices and symbols contained in the process of implementing appabbajikang bunting in Pattallikang village, Gowa Regency in terms of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. This type of research is qualitative with a qualitative descriptive research design. The methods used in collecting data for this research were observation, interviews and documentation. The results of this research show that in the process of implementing the appabbajikang bunting tradition in Pattallikang village, Gowa Regency it has the meaning of (1) icons, namely tai bani and doek. (2) the meaning of the index, namely dupa, nipaasori lipak, and nisioi na sisioi kanrejawa. (3) the meaning of the symbols, namely jajjakkang, umba-umba, tai bani, doek, kanrejawa lapisik, lawarak kadea, kanrejawa sirikaya, songkolok palopok, jeknek inung, lekok kalomping, lipak. In general, the meaning contained in the tradition of the appabbajikang bunting procession in Pattallikang village, Gowa Regency is to unite the bride and groom, obtain abundant fortune, and have a prosperous household life.

Implikasi Sorong Serah Aji Krame dalam Mempererat Hubungan Keluarga di Masyarakat Sasak

This study examines the cultural significance of the Sorong Serah Aji Krame tradition, a Sasak traditional wedding ritual on Lombok Island, Indonesia. This tradition not only represents the transfer of material goods, but also serves as a mechanism to strengthen family cohesion. Through qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and observations, this study explores how this ritual builds emotional connections, honors elders, and ensures continuity between generations in the Sasak community. The results show that Sorong Serah Aji Krame plays an important role in maintaining social harmony and family solidarity, especially amidst the challenges of modernization.

Blood and Choice: Reconstructing the Marriage Plot in David Copperfield and Iola Leroy

ABSTRACT Using the exemplary pair of Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield from a recent Dickens Universe conference, and Frances E.W. Harper’s Iola Leroy, this article explores what it might mean to read two novels from different traditions “together.” After identifying models of “togetherness” from comparison to what she calls “defamiliarization,” Michie looks at how both novels defamiliarize the traditional (white, female-centered) marriage plot. While David Copperfield challenges the neat binary structure of the white female marriage plot, Iola Leroy, with its representation of the violence of slavery, offers a counter-structure that questions the plot’s dependence on virginity, individuality, and choice.

Kajian Kritis Tradisi Nyongkolan dalam Perkawinan Adat Lombok Perspektif Urf

The practice of Nyongkolan in traditional marriages of Lombok people has been in the spotlight because it causes traffic jams, drinking alcohol, and causes brawls. This study aims to examine the current Nyongkolan tradition and its suitability with Sasak characteristics and Islamic teachings from the perspective of 'Urf. The research method uses qualitative research with data collection through observation and documentation. The data analysis method uses Miles and Huberman data analysis through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that basically in the view of 'Urf the implementation of Nyongkolan is allowed as long as it does not conflict with Islamic law. In the beginning, the Nyongkolan tradition was carried out to take the newlyweds to the female family's house and announce the girl's marriage in the hope that no one would disturb the two brides because they had entered into a legal marriage. The practice of Nyongkolan becomes haram when it is accompanied by erotic dancing, drinking alcohol, and brawls because it is contrary to Islamic teachings.

Proses Komunikasi Antara Budaya Dalam Pernikahan Adat Di Kelurahan Kota Medan Kabupaten Bengkulu Selatan

The aims of this study to determine the Intercultural Communication Process in Traditional Marriage in Kota Medan Urban Village, South Bengkulu Regency. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive research. The informants in this study amounted to 7 people consisting of 3 key informants and 4 main informants. The theory used in this study was the Theory of Intercultural Communication Process Aloliliweri, 2011:44. The results of the study show that: 1. Openness of Intercultural Marriage in marriage, the way of communicating uses or uses Indonesian, but occasionally there is the use of Javanese or pesemah language in the marriage so that everyone understands and understands more quickly in the implementation of the marriage. 2. Empathy There was mutual assessment of the couple and criticism of the decisions made by the couple in deciding something for the better in the future in the household. Each couple has a commitment in marriage, especially the problem of residence, some follow their husbands and some still live in their in-laws' house because of other circumstances and considerations. 3. Positive Attitude (positiveness) in a family, praise was reduced to please their partner in terms of dress or appearance even though it was important to add harmony to the family, it was one form of pleasant attention to their partner. 4. Supportive Attitude (supportiveness) there was mutual communication between husband and wife before taking action that must be done to avoid negative traits in acting, what is important is openness in any aspect of marriage. 5. Equality There is a change in attitude after marriage, more assertive, protective and caring for the family, both from the husband and the wife, there was no difference in attention that is differentiated from one another

Legal Authority and Marital Identity: A Study on the Kalosara Tradition of the Tolaki People in Southeast Sulawesi

For the Tolaki indigenous people, a marriage is considered valid when it is conducted in accordance with the kalosara tradition. This signifies that the legitimacy of marriage among the Tolaki people of Southeast Sulawesi is not determined by adherence to Islamic law or state regulations, but by the observance of the kalosara customary practice. This study seeks to explore the kalosara tradition as the prevailing authority in the marriage law of the Tolaki community in Southeast Sulawesi, and to analyze the perspectives of Islamic law through the concepts of ‘urf and maṣlaḥa mursala in relation to this tradition. Employing a qualitative research method with an empirical-normative approach, data were gathered through interviews with traditional leaders, community figures, and religious authorities. The findings of the study indicate that the kalosara tradition in Tolaki community wedding ceremonies consists of three stages: seeking permission, the proposal, and the marriage contract. The Tolaki people regard a marriage as valid only if it adheres to the kalosara tradition, establishing customary law as the dominant form of marriage law within the community. From the perspective of ‘urf, the kalosara tradition is deemed acceptable, as it fulfills the criteria of al-‘urf al-ṣaḥīḥ (good custom). Moreover, the kalosara tradition contributes to social welfare within the Tolaki community of Southeast Sulawesi. This research is expected to make a significant global contribution to the development of studies on marriage law and tradition. Furthermore, it is deserving of recognition as a valuable academic resource addressing societal legal needs concerning the practice of marriage traditions.

Traditional Marriage Culture Among People from Different Nationalities: A Study of Cultural Adaptation in the Gampong Iboih Community, Suka Karya District, Sabang City, Aceh Province

A marriage between different nationalities is a marriage between two people residing in Indonesia who are subject to different laws due to differences in nationality, with one of the parties being an Indonesian citizen. The process of implementing marriages between nations often requires cultural adaptation. Cultural adaptation in traditional marriages between nations is a process in which couples from different cultures attempt to incorporate elements from their respective cultures into their marriage. This is an important step in understanding and respecting cultural differences, as well as ensuring that the marriage takes place in harmony. Apart from the many factors that support marriage between nations, various factors inhibit marriage between nations, obstacles, and problems that affect the harmony of relationships. Thus, this research aims to describe and analyze cultural adaptations to marriage between nations in the Gampong Iboih community, Suka Makmue District, Sabang City and analyze the supporting and inhibiting factors of marriage culture in the Gampong Iboih community, Suka Makmue District, Sabang City. The research uses a qualitative approach method and the nature of the research used is a descriptive analysis of research case studies. Data sources come from primary and secondary data, and data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques through interviews, observation, and documentation. Interviews were conducted in Gampong Iboih, Suka Makmue District, Sabang City, Aceh Province. The informants in this research were members of community groups who carried out traditional marriages between nations. Results show that the cultural adaptation process resulting from marriage between nations takes the form of language/communication, wedding ceremonies, culinary traditions, and children’s education. The supporting factors for marriage between nations include openness, tolerance between both parties, flexibility, education, and social support. Apart from that, several factors inhibit marriage between nations, namely different values and norms between husband and wife, citizenship and legal issues, and language differences. Implications of Islamic Mahr (dower) and African Lobolo (bride-price) on Religious and Customary Marriages and the Rights of Muslim Women to Inherit in South Africa

Abstract The monogamous and polygynous customary marriages of indigenous Black Africans have been fully legally recognised in South Africa since 1998. The outcome of a June 2022 apex Constitutional Court judgment will finally result in monogamous and polygynous Muslim marriages (nikāḥ) being fully legally recognized and regulated by the State by 2024. Since this recognition does not include the Islamic law of succession (which will not pass constitutional muster because of half-share to women), when Muslims die intestate, the secular law is expected to apply. The payment of mahr (dower) by the groom to the bride (an important ingredient of a nikāḥ contract) is therefore an important alternative tool for augmenting the inheritance of Muslim women during their lifetime. A novel fatwā issued by local Black African ulama in August 2022 brought to light several challenges faced by African Muslims regarding the relation of nikāḥ marriages to distinctive African traditional marriage practices like the lobolo (“bride price”) paid by the groom to the bride’s father. This paper examines the implications of mahr and lobolo on religious and customary marriages and the rights of local Black African Muslim women to inherit in terms of religion and custom.

Illocutionary Speech Acts in Sawér Poetry of the Sundanese Ethnic Traditional Marriage Ceremony

The lyrics contained in every nyawér ceremony certainly have meaning and a message. This research aims to determine the type of speech of each stanza of poetry and to understand the meaning contained inward. This research adopts descriptive qualitative methods with a cultural approach. The research data were taken from a Sundanese sawér poetry by Mr. Tahyan from Ciamis consisting of 9 stanzas. Each stanza, consisting of several lines of poetry, was analyzed using Searle's speech act theory to determine the type of speech and pragmatic manifestations. The cultural approach was used to strengthen the analysis. This was because the speech in the sawér poetry of the wedding ceremony is very closely related to the culture of a region, in this case, the Sundanese ethnic group. The results of the research show that the types of speech in Sundanese sawér poetry consist of 2 directive illocutionary speech acts meaning requests and hopes; 3 directive illocutionary acts meaning prohibitions and warnings; 2 directive illocutionary commands and suggestions; 1 assertive illocutionary meaning statement, and 1 assertive illocutionary act that means hopeful. The meaning contained in the sawér poetry is advice for the newlyweds to enter married life through religious norms and social norms so that they can live it well and achieve happiness.

Study of Malay Marriage Customs: Acculturation and Islamic Communication Values in Riau Malay Society

<p><em>The qualitative research employed by the author examines the acculturation of Islamic communication values in Riau Malay marriage customs, observing events at various stages of the marriage process. Data is gathered through the Riau Malay Customary Institute (LAM Riau), using interviews and documentation and observing traditional marriage ceremonies. Additional data is collected from Riau community leaders involved in the marriage process. The research spans approximately 16 months. Findings indicate that Riau Malay traditional weddings are meticulously organized to affirm Malay identity and fulfill societal roles, with customs regulating life aspects at the national and state levels. Islamic communication strengthens individual religious identity. Secondly, values in Islamic communication, guided by the Quran and Hadith, are integral to traditional Malay wedding ceremonies, encompassing pre-wedding, marriage process, and post-wedding stages. Thirdly, the acculturation of Islam in Malay marriage customs dates back to the 15th century, marked by trade, intermarriages between Arab traders and locals, and the Islamization of Malay rulers, based on the Quran and As-Sunnah, the primary sources of Islamic teachings.</em></p>

Perubahan Sosial Sistem Kekerabatan dalam Upacara Adat Perkawinan Masyarakat Nias (Studi Kasus Tahapan Fanika Era-Era Mbowo) di Desa Tuhembuasi Kecamatan Sogae’adu Kabupaten Nias

The title of this research emphasizes social changes in the kinship system in the traditional marriage ceremony of the Nias community (case study of the fanika stages of the mbowo era) in Tuhembuasi Village, Sogae'adu District, Nias Regency. The aim of this research is: To find out/describe social changes in the kinship system in the traditional marriage ceremony of the Nias community (case study of the fanika stages of the mbowo era) in Tuhembuasi Village, Sogae'adu District, Nias Regency. In this research, the method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The results of the research show that the causes of changes in the Fanika stages of the Mbowo era in the Nias tribe community in Tuhembuasi Village, Sogae'adu District, Nias Regency are: (1) parents nowadays are very busy so they don't have time to talk about or teach about customs. and the culture of the Nias people to their children; (2) because the implementation of the Fanika stages in the Mbowo era took a lot of time, up to 3 to 4 hours, so people also felt bored because the time was too long, so the implementation of this stage was often postponed; (3) many people currently have very little experience of Nias culture so that the implementation of its customs as they are is important to remember but is not implemented; (4) migrate, marry with other tribes, so that the celebration does not reflect Nias culture.

Indigenization of Pakistani English in Kanza Javed’s Ashes, Wine and Dust

This article explores the indigenization of English in Pakistan in Kanza Javed’s English novel ‘Ashes, Wine and Dust’. This exploratory and interpretative research employed a close reading of the novel to analyse lexical borrowing in Pakistani English, utilising a note-taking technique to identify incorporated Urdu words, examining linguistic features such as semantic fields. The analysis following established frameworks that focus on lexical borrowing and variation as reflections of socio-linguistic practices. The research aimed to explore two key questions regarding lexical variation in this novel. First, the study examined how Javed incorporates various lexical borrowing in her novel. These include words related to food, living styles, clothing, forms of address and titles, religious terms, Indo-Pak history, traditional wedding events, ethnic identity, languages representing cultural identity, and places symbolizing cultural heritage. Each of these categories reflects the rich cultural and historical context of Pakistan. Second, the study analysed how these lexical variations reflect socio-linguistic practices in Pakistani English. The novel shows the use of code-switching and compounding, two prominent features of Pakistani English that highlight the engaging language use between Urdu and English, blending them to create a distinct linguistic identity. By integrating these cultural-specific words, the writer aims to enhance the authenticity of the story and connect with a broader audience. This shows how language variation reflects the socio-linguistic norms of Pakistani society.

Panai Tradition in Bugis Makassar Society in Bima: Islamic Law Perspective

This research aims to find out how the panai tradition of Islamic law is reviewed in the marriage traditions of the Bugis tribe of Makassar in Bima. This research uses descriptive qualitative research with a normative sociological approach to field studies. The collection techniques are observation, interviews and documentation. Meanwhile, data analysis processing techniques use reduction, data presentation and conclusions. The results of this research show that first, the Bugis Community in Makassar has two elements that cannot be separated in the marriage process, namely the man not only gives the dowry but also gives panai. If one of the parties commits a violation after the application and cash payment process has been carried out, then one of them will be subject to a fine. Second, judging from Islamic law, marriage is subject to the application of panai as one of the mandatory requirements in traditional marriages of the Bugis tribe which does not violate the pillars and conditions of marriage in Islamic law, because the tradition of giving panai is by the principles of Islamic marriage law because it contains the principle of consent and agreement between the groom and the bride in determining the value of the panai.

Makna Simbolik dalam Tradisi Adat Khatam Al-Qur’an Pada Acara Pernikahan Oleh Masyarakat Desa Sekernan Muaro Jambi

Every Muslim has various forms of interaction with the Qur'an. For example, the people of Sekernan Village make the recitation of khataman al-Qur'an part of the traditional wedding procession. In practice, this tradition has a unique procession that acculturates with local culture. Therefore, the community makes this tradition a religious ritual in the form of meaningful symbols that are believed to have a positive influence on the sustainability of building a household. So, this research aims to look at the procession and the meaning behind the practice. Using Clifford Geertz's theory, it is used as an analysis to find the meaning behind the symbols in the traditional tradition of khatam al-Qur'an. The results of this study show that there are several series of customs that must be carried out by the bride before reading the Qur'an. Among them are the procession of processions, weighing, then reading the khatam al-Qur'an starting from surah al-Duha to surah an-Nas accompanied by the Koran teacher and his parents. In addition, this tradition also has symbols that relate to the concept of religion, namely in the form of religious education, birrul walidain, and privileges that are believed to have ultimate meaning, so that it continues to be maintained to this day.
