Sustainable reuse of modified incineration sewage sludge ash (M-ISSA) for stabilization of highly As-contaminated soil

Arsenic (As) is an environmental hazardous contaminant, seriously threatening human health. Chemical activation can effectively enhance As adsorption performance of incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA). Through modification, the iron (mainly present as hematite) in the ISSA was rearranged to KFeO2. Based on the results of the present study, addition of modified ISSA (M-ISSA) in contaminated soil had a positive effect on As immobilization. A set of laboratory batch experiments including toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP), synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP), and sequential extraction procedure (SEP) were carried out to investigate effects of M-ISSA dosages and curing time on immobilization of As contaminated soil (100, 500, 1000 mg As/kg soil). Results indicated that a higher addition amount of M-ISSA enhanced the effectiveness of stabilization and significantly reduced the As leachability after a stabilization period of 28 d. Particularly, in 1000 mg As/kg soil, M-ISSA reduced the labile As concentration in the TCLP test from 21.45 to 0.73 mg/L and in the SPLP test from 27.75 mg/L to 7.83 mg/L. M-ISSA transformed As in soil to more stable forms that were bounded to amorphous iron hydrous oxides. The number of stable fractions saw a sharp rise from 31% to 60%, when the M-ISSA addition was 5%. Different characterizations were conducted including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), in order to demonstrate the stabilization behavior and mechanism of As and M-ISSA. The main stabilization mechanism was associated with adsorption and coprecipitation processes. Overall, this study proposed a novel recycling method for ISSA that could be chemically modified into a reliable and efficient additive for the immobilization of As contaminated soil.

Sustainable Stabilization of Cadmium (Cd)-Contaminated Soil with Biochar-Cement: Evaluation of Strength, Leachability, Microstructural Characteristics, and Stabilization Mechanism

ABSTRACT To facilitate the solid waste reuse of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil and biochar and reduce the high emission of cement materials, we employed biochar-cement composite stabilizer to remedy Cd-contaminated soil. We assessed the effects of the biochar-cement composite stabilizer dosage and curing time on stabilized soil strength by using unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests, leaching concentration and stabilization rate in Cd-contaminated soil stabilized by biochar-cement by using toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, and mechanism of change in strength and leaching characteristics by using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The research results demonstrate that biochar addition to cement-stabilized soil promoted cement hydration reaction and increased particle agglomeration. A low dosage of biochar improved stabilization effects. The optimal biochar dosage was 5%, which enhanced the early growth speed of the UCS. More cement improved the stabilized soil’s UCS. At a 5% cement dosage, adding biochar significantly reduced Cd leaching concentration, and improved the stabilization rate. At a 10% cement dosage, the biochar-cement composite stabilized soil’s stabilization rate was >99.8%. Calcium silicate hydrate, calcium aluminate hydrate, and ettringite were the main products of biochar-cement stabilized soil that filled soil and biochar pores; these substances encapsulated, adsorbed, or exchanged ions of Cd2+, achieving stabilization effects.

Mechanical properties and stability of zinc-contaminated red clay cured by MICP synergistically activated MgO

Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) technology offers an innovative approach for the solidification and stabilization of heavy metal-contaminated soils; However, the mechanical strength and long-term stability of this remediation method have not been thoroughly investigated. This study introduces an innovative curing and stabilization technique using MICP-activated MgO to address the geotechnical challenges posed by zinc ion-contaminated soils. To investigate the effect of zinc ions on soil and the optimal efficacy of MICP-activated MgO in curing zinc contamination, experiments were conducted on zinc-contaminated soils with varying zinc ion concentrations (0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%), dry densities (1.35, 1.4, 1.45, 1.5g/cm³), and activated MgO admixtures (1%, 2%, 5%, 10%). The effectiveness of MICP-activated MgO was evaluated through macroscopic analysis and stability tests, including unconfined compressive strength tests, direct shear tests, and the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The results indicated that zinc ions disrupted soil particle cementation, enlarged inter-particle pores, and significantly reduced both unconfined compressive strength and shear strength. The optimal dosage of MICP-activated MgO for curing zinc-contaminated soil was determined to be 10%, resulting in an unconfined compressive strength of 1.196MPa and a Zn2+ leaching concentration of 0.1414mg/L. The combined actions of MICP-activated MgO facilitated the formation of alkaline magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, and magnesium hydroxide. These compounds filled the inter-particle pores of zinc-contaminated soil, encapsulating and co-precipitating zinc ions, thereby enhancing the soil's strength and stability. These findings establish a theoretical foundation for the engineering application of MICP-activated MgO in the remediation of zinc-contaminated soils.

Impact of biochar produced at different pyrolysis conditions on heavy metal contaminated soil.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of urban derived biochars such as Sugarcane bagasse (SB), Brinjal Stem (BS), and Citrus Peel (CP) produced at two different pyrolysis conditions (450 and 600°C for 60min) for soil heavy metal bioremediation potential. An ex-situ study was conducted to remediate single heavy metal-contaminated SoilRite with lead (Pb), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr) and cadmium (Cd), with biochars applied at different rates. Heavy metal status in soilrite was evaluated using various extraction methods (water-soluble, exchangeable, TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure), and PBET (Physiologically Based Extraction Tests)) to determine the biochar treatments' efficacy. The findings show that SB biochar at 450-60 are more effective in immobilizing heavy metals in water-soluble (Cd-100% Pb and Cu-70%), exchangeable (Pb:91%, Cd and Cu by 70-80%) and PBET-extracted forms (Cd-91%, Pb-80%, and Cu-75%), whereas biochar derived from BS (84%) and CP (90%) at 600-60 are more effective in immobilizing TCLP-extracted form of Pb and Cu. Urban derived biochars significantly reduced the toxicity of Pb, Cu, and Cd in various extractable forms and can stabilize and convert them into less accessible forms except for Cr. These extraction methods aid in evaluating environmental risks and influencing remediation strategies for soil heavy metal pollution. Urban biochar, as a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution, significantly solves this issue, facilitating sustainable waste management.

Study on heavy metal leaching from steel slag in coastal soft soil and its environmental impact

ABSTRACT To explore the environmental impact of steel slag deposited within a coastal soft soil foundation, the steel slag produced by a steel plant in Fangchenggang city was chosen as a case study. Seawater was collected from the coastal foundation, and water with different levels of salinity was obtained by low-temperature evaporation, filtration, sterilisation, and dilution. Leaching tests of steel slag in artificial seawater with different levels of salinity were carried out according to the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The results showed that with the increase in the leaching time and salinity of the solution, the concentration of heavy metals in solution displayed an upward trend; however, the rate of increase decreased once the concentration reached a certain level. From an environmental perspective, it is not advisable to use steel slag as a filler near drinking water, and steel slag should not be used as a foundation material in the high-salinity coastal soft soil layer.

Speciation distribution and leaching behavior of heavy metals in coal gasification fine ash: Influence of particle size, carbon content and mineral composition

In this study, the occurrence and distribution of heavy metals in coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) with different particle sizes were investigated to ensure safer disposal and utilization strategies for CGFA. These measures are critical to sustainable industrial practices. This study investigates the distribution and leachability of heavy metals in CGFA, analyzing how these factors vary with particle size, carbon content, and mineral composition. The results demonstrated that larger CGFA particles (>1 mm) encapsulated up to 70 % more heavy metals than smaller particles (<0.1 mm). Cr and Zn were present in higher concentrations in larger CGFA particles, whereas volatile elements such as Zn, Hg, Se, and Pb were found in relatively higher contents in finer CGFA particles. At least 70 % of Hg in CGFA was present in an acid-soluble form of speciation, whereas Cd, Zn, and Pb were mostly present in a reducible form of speciation, which could be attributed to the presence of franklinite. More than 40 % of Cd and Zn in fine CGFA particles exist in an acid-soluble form. With the exception of CGFA_1.18, Se in CGFA mainly existed in an oxidizable form at a ratio of 60 %–80 %. This could be attributed to the presence of bassanite particles as well as the higher affinity of Se for S. In contrast, Cr, Cu, and As were mostly present in residual speciation forms owing to their parasitism in quartz, sillimanite, and amorphous Fe solid solution in CGFA. Additionally, the study revealed that there was no significant relationship between heavy metal content, leaching behavior, and carbon content in CGFA. Based on combined analyses using toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) leaching concentrations and risk assessment code (RAC) results, it is recommended to focus on the environmental risks posed by Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Hg in CGFA during their modification and utilization processes.

Sustainable extraction of valuable metals from petroleum spent hydroprocessing catalysts using a biodegradable lixiviant

The petroleum spent hydroprocessing catalysts contain high concentrations of toxic and valuable metals (Ni, V, Mo, and Al). Herein, a sustainable leaching process using a biodegradable green chelating agent (nitrilotriacetic acid- NTA) has been developed for leaching valuable metals from spent hydroprocessing catalysts in a single stage of operation. Our findings indicate that NTA can selectively extract all valuable metals with high efficiency (Ni- 93.3 %, Mo- 93.4 %, and V- 80.6 %), and minimal Al2O3 dissolution. The leaching kinetic was explained using a semiempirical Avrami equation (R2 > 0.9). After leaching, the dechlation of the NTA-metal complex led to an almost complete recovery of NTA (ca. 94 %). The leach residue (Al2O3) was subjected to ‘Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure’ (TCLP) analysis and it was found that it poses a low ecological risk. Moreover, due to the leaching of deposited metals, there was a remarkable improvement in the textural properties of the leach residue (BET surface area- 193.5 m2/g and pore volume- 0.59 ml/g) thus making it a potential reuse candidate for preparing fresh hydrotreating catalyst. Therefore, this green method not only successfully permits the sustainable leaching of valuable metals, but allows the potential reuse of residue to prepare fresh hydroprocessing catalysts.

Stabilization of residual mercury from gold mining as metacinnabar and cinnabar in ball mills on a pilot scale

Waste liquid mercury generated as a by-product of the Merrill–Crowe process in gold mining and recovered from mercury-containing waste must be stabilized for secure storage or disposal. This study developed a procedure for mercury stabilization. A ball mill with a 0.5 m3 capacity and a rotational speed of 43 rpm was used to stabilize the residual mercury with sulfur. The treatments were conducted for 30, 60, and 90 min at mercury: sulfur molar ratios of 1.0, 0.8, and 0.67. The ball loading ratio was 7.0 with residual mercury, and the temperature was below 40 °C. The treatment efficiency was evaluated by measuring the concentrations of mercury and other metals using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), examining the stabilized residual mercury by X-ray diffraction, and conducting bioassays on Daphnia magna and Lactuca sativa. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on the aforementioned variables. The 90-min treatment, with a mercury-to-sulfur molar ratio of 0.67, stabilized mercury mainly as cinnabar compared with the other treatments and presented leachate mercury values below the detection limit <0.003. The leachate from the treatments also showed values of 21.28–38.44 toxic units, classified as very toxic, and generated toxicity, particularly for D. magna, because of the presence of other metals such as Al, Ba, B, Ca, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn. The variability of the residues in the PCA analysis was explained by the treatment effect and the presence of other metals in the residual mercury. The stabilized residual mercury obtained was classified as non-hazardous and could be stored or disposed of as ordinary waste in a security landfill.

Developed Recyclable CaFe-Layered Double Hydroxide for Efficient Cadmium Immobilization in Soil: Performance and Bioavailability

Powdered layered double hydroxide (CaFe-LDH) was synthesized via hydrothermal co-precipitation, demonstrating successful preparation upon characterization. Subsequently, experiments were conducted to assess its efficacy in immobilizing divalent cadmium (Cd(II)). The findings substantiated the effectiveness of CaFe-LDH in immobilizing Cd(II) within soil. Various influencing factors, including LDH dosage, pH, and soil heavy metal concentration, were systematically investigated, revealing CaFe-LDH’s superiority in Cd(II) immobilization. Notably, the leaching concentration of Cd(II) was notably reduced from 142.30 mg/L to 32.99 mg/L, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 31.10 mg/L, underscoring the significant role of CaFe-LDH in Cd(II) removal. Furthermore, the stability of CaFe-LDH was confirmed via toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) experiments and plant potting tests. In-depth analysis of the immobilization mechanism through X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) elucidated isomorphous substitution and surface adsorption as the primary mechanisms responsible for Cd(II) immobilization in contaminated soils. Additionally, isomorphic substitution and adsorption onto oxygen-containing functional groups were observed. This comprehensive study underscores the promising potential of CaFe-LDH in immobilizing Cd(II) in contaminated soil. With its commendable immobilization properties and recyclability, CaFe-LDH emerges as a promising solution for remediating heavy-metal-contaminated soils.

Potential of Attapulgite/Humic Acid Composites for Remediation of Cd-Contaminated Soil

Stabilizing materials were prepared by different ratios of attapulgite/humic acid composites, and the optimum proportion for the remediation of Cd-polluted soils was found. The results suggested that the bioavailability of Cd in soil was decreased by the application of material prepared with humic acid and attapulgite in a ratio of 1:5. CaCl2-Cd, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA-Cd) and the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP-Cd) were reduced by 34.03%, 26.62% and 43.66%, and the ecological risk was depressed accordingly. The addition of stabilizing materials could transform the acid-soluble and reducible speciation to residue speciation, with a ratio of 1:5, significantly increasing the residue proportion of Cd in soil. The content of the residue state was increased by 63.13%, and the content of the acid-soluble state was significantly decreased by 34.10% compared with the control. The bioavailability, acid-soluble and reducible speciation of Cd had a highly negative correlation with the growth of corn, and the accumulation of Cd in corn had a significantly negative correlation with the residue speciation. Attapulgite/humic acid composites can reduce the bioavailability and increase the ratio of residue Cd in soil effectively, and they have the potential to remediate the pollution of heavy metals in soil.

Investigation on solidified/stabilized behavior of marine soil slurry by lime-activated incinerated sewage sludge ash-ground granulated blast furnace slag under multifactor conditions

This study aims to evaluate the possibility of reusing treated marine clayey soils by stabilization/solidification (S/S) technology as geomaterial in reclamation projects from the aspects of engineering strength, chemical modification and environmental risk assessment. The lime-activated incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) together with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) was employed as the binder. The multi-controlling factors including water content, curing time, salinity, and chemical compositions of mixing solution were taken account to identify the S/S treated Hong Kong marine deposit (HKMD) slurry based on the strength tests, pH measurement, thermo-gravimetric (TG) analysis, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests, etc. The results show that the S/S treatment using lime-activated ISSA-GGBS can effectively enhance the strength of marine soil at initial water content of 110% and 200%. The water content and curing time have a significant impact on the S/S treated HKMD. The pH of treated soils is higher than 11.1, which proves an alkaline environment for the reactions in the treated soil. A special case is the treated HKMD at 200% water content hydrated by MgCl2 solution, which has a low pH of 10.23 and maintains a slurry state. Based on the TCLP results, the leaching concentration of heavy metals from S/S treated HKMD is environmentally safe and meets Hong Kong standard for reusing treated soil with a low level of <0.2 mg/L. The content of main products such as calcium/magnesium silicate hydrate, ettringite or Friedel's salt depends on the chemical additions (e.g. distilled water, seawater, NaCl and Na2SO4). The products in the specimens mixed with MgCl2 solutions are mainly composed of Mg(OH)2, M-S-H and MgCO3, which is distinct with the neoformations in the other cases. Therefore, this study proves that the S/S treated soil slurry could be reused as geomaterials in reclamation projects, and the S/S process is greatly affected by water content, curing time and solution compositions, etc.

Solidification/stabilization of lead-contaminated soil using alkali-activated volcanic ash

The bioaccumulation of lead in soil poses a significant human health risk. The solidification/stabilization (S/S) technique, employing binders like Portland cement or lime, is a common method for remediating lead-contaminated soil. However, cement production has adverse environmental impacts, prompting the exploration of eco-friendly alternatives like alkali-activated materials (AAMs). This study assesses AAM efficacy in the S/S of lead-contaminated soil. The effects of several factors, including varying amounts of volcanic ash (VA), lead concentration, curing temperatures, and curing times are investigated. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS), toxicity characteristic leaching procedure test (TCLP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and field emission scanning electron microscope-energy-dispersive spectroscopy-mapping analyses (FESEM/EDS/mapping) analyses are used to study the specimens. The findings indicated a substantial increase in the UCS of lead-contaminated soil treated with 15% VA (under oven curing (OC) conditions), and 10% VA (under ambient curing (AC) conditions) exhibited remarkable increases of up to 600% and 458%, respectively. Moreover, the leaching of Pb2+ ions from samples contaminated with 10,000 mg/kg (under OC conditions) and 2500 mg/kg (under AC conditions) experienced significant reductions of 87% (from 135.14 to 13.36 ppm) and 91% (from 26.32 to 2.21 ppm), respectively. The S/S process in these samples operated through three primary mechanisms of chemical bonding, physical encapsulation, and the formation of insoluble silicate. The formation of N-A-S–H and hydroxy sodalite structures played a vital role in facilitating these mechanisms. Therefore, alkali-activated VA demonstrated excellent performance in the remediation of lead-contaminated soil.Graphical

Evaluation of asphalt film thickness and heavy metal leaching of oxidizing slag used as an aggregate material in dense-graded asphalt concrete.

Electric-arc-furnace (EAF) steelmaking uses scrap iron and steel as raw materials. Scrap iron and steel originate from complex sources and may contain heavy metal components which can leach into the environment over time due to wear-and-tear. A by-product of the EAF steelmaking process is oxidizing slag, and approximately 1.2 million metric tons is produced every year in Taiwan alone. This study investigated substitution of natural aggregates with oxidizing slag in dense-graded asphalt concrete. We evaluated the water resistance and asphalt film thickness of the oxidizing slag substituted asphalt concrete and further explored the performance of oxidizing slag as paving material. We determined the dissolved and total amounts of heavy metals in the oxidizing slag, comparing these results with current regulatory controls to assess the environmental compatibility of the oxidizing slag. We found that due to the complicated sources of oxidizing slag, the basic properties should be analyzed on a batch-to-batch basis. Furthermore, we recommend trial mixing before upscaling the production of oxidizing slag substituted dense-graded asphalt concrete to confirm the mixing time required to achieve uniformity. The results also show that in comparison to natural aggregates used in asphalt concrete, oxidizing slag exhibits superior performance in terms of increased asphalt film thickness and improved water resistance. Furthermore, oxidizing slag as an aggregate material was associated with decreased heavy metal leaching and reduced environmental pollution. The results of the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) met regulatory requirements. However, the microwave-assisted aqua-regia digestion procedure showed heavy metal concentrations exceeding the monitoring standards for food crops. Considering environmental compatibility, it is recommended that controlling the total amount of heavy metals in oxidizing slag should be included in regulatory requirements. Furthermore, we should prohibit the use of materials such as oxidizing slag and other steel furnace slag in the roadways adjacent to edible crop farmlands.

Microbiologically induced calcite precipitation (MICP) in situ remediated heavy metal contamination in sludge nutrient soil

Microbiologically induced calcite precipitation (MICP), as a newly developing bioremediation technology, could redeem heavy metal contamination in diverse scenarios. In this study, MICP bacterium Sporosarcina ureilytica ML-2 was employed to suppress the pollution of Pb, Cd and Zn in municipal sludge nutrient soil. After MICP remediation, the exchangeable Cd and Zn in sludge nutrient soil were correspondingly reduced by 31.02 % and 6.09 %, while the carbonate-bound Pb, Cd and Zn as well as the residual fractions were increased by 16.12 %, 6.63 %, 13.09 % and 6.10 %, 45.70 %, 3.86 %, respectively. In addition, the extractable Pb, Cd and Zn either by diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) or toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) in sludge nutrient soil were significantly reduced. These results demonstrated that the bio-calcite generated via MICP helped to immobilize heavy metals. Furthermore, MICP treatment improved the abundance of functional microorganisms related to urea cycle, while reduced the overall abundance of metal resistance genes (MRGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This work confirmed the feasibility of MICP in remediation of heavy metal in sludge nutrient soil, which expanded the application field of MICP and provided a promising way for heavy metal pollution management.

Sustainable Application of Pyrolytic Oxygen Furnace Slag in Cement-Stabilized Macadam: Volume Stability, Mechanical Properties, and Environmental Impact

As an industrial waste, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag is an ideal substitute for natural rubble and sand. However, its potential instability of volume restricts the application of the BOF slag in engineering. This study aims at investigating the volume stability and mechanical properties of BOF slag and its application as an aggregate in cement-stabilized macadam. As part of this research, the physicochemical properties, especially the volume stability, of two types of BOF slags and andesite were first studied. Then, mechanical properties, volume stability, and an environment analysis are used to evaluate the application of pyrolytic BOF slag in cement-stabilized macadam. The experimental results show that different types of BOF slags have similar thermal expansion coefficients, which are higher than andesite. The free CaO content of pyrolytic BOF slag is much lower than that of ordinary BOF slag and the volume expansion of pyrolytic BOF slag is less than 0.5%. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cement-stabilized macadam using pyrolytic BOF slag is about 30% higher than that of andesite. Although the water loss rate is higher than a natural aggregate, dry shrinkage of pyrolytic BOF slag cement-stabilized macadam is about 30–50% less than that of a natural aggregate. Meanwhile, its shrinking speed is also slower than that of a natural aggregate. The micro-expansion properties of pyrolytic BOF slag could effectively partially offset the shrinkage characteristics of cement-stabilized macadam. Finally, the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test results indicated that the metal leaching concentration meets the Chinese environmental standards. This study provides a direction for the large-scale and effective sustainable application of pyrolytic BOF slag.

A comparative life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle cost analysis (LCCA), mechanical and long-term leaching evaluation of road pavement structures containing multiple secondary materials

Oil-Based Drill Cuttings (OBDC) are one of the hazardous wastes of the oil and gas industry. In this study, Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), OBDC and Fly Ash (FA) geopolymer were used in Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR) mixtures. The dynamic modulus test was used to appraise the viscoelastic properties of CCPR mixtures. The Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test was also utilized to investigate the long-term contaminants leaching. In addition, a cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) were conducted to evaluate the potential environmental burdens and economic costs of pavement structures containing CCPR mixtures. Moreover, Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) analysis using four different methods was performed to determine the optimal sample. The results revealed that the recycling of OBDC and RAP in stabilized CCPR mixtures with FA geopolymer can improve the viscoelastic properties and prevent the leaching of contaminants from these waste materials. Furthermore, recycling of the mentioned waste materials in CCPR mixtures has caused a significant reduction in global warming, acidification, eutrophication, smog, respiratory effects, Human toxicity, ecotoxicity, and cumulative energy demand up to 41%, 36.6%, 73%, 43%, 47%, 34%, 73%, and 13%, respectively. Additionally, using CCPR mixtures containing the OBCD, RAP, and FA geopolymer in the pavement structure has led to economic benefits of up to 31% compared to the conventional pavement system.

Preparation of greener geopolymer binder based fly ash: An effective strategy toward carbon neutrality

Decarbonizing the building sector to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) is a complex issue that poses significant challenges to the scientific community. In this context, the current paper aims to assess the viability of employing incinerated by-products as a sustainable mineral resource to produce sustainable geopolymers. To this end, the study focuses on the formulation of geopolymer binders using fly ash with various proportions (ranging from 0 % to 50 %) of metakaolin (MK), investigating their physico-mechanical, microstructural analysis as well as their sealing capacity. The results indicate that incorporating 30 % MK not only preserves good workability but also significantly improves mechanical strength, ensuring long-term durability by increasing bulk density and concurrently reducing water absorption and harmful porosity. Moreover, the results of the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) demonstrated that the released contaminants remained within the regulatory limits established by the USEPA. The geopolymer binder developed exhibited a significant reduction of 77.23 % and 57.92 % in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) emissions and energy demand compared to conventional cement. This study introduces a novel approach to promoting a circular economy within the building sector.

Co-pyrolysis of alkali-fused fly ash and corn stover to synthesize biochar composites for remediating lead-contaminated soil

Fly ash (FA) is mainly composed of silica, alumina, and other metal oxide components, and has a positive stabilizing effect on soil heavy metals. Biochar composites produced from FA and corn stover (CS) can improve its remediation performance. Therefore, a batch of biochar composites (alkali-fused FA-CS biochars, ABs), synthesized via co-pyrolysis of CS and alkali-fused FA (AFFA) at different temperatures of 300, 500, and 700 °C (AB300-1, AB500-1, and AB700-1) and CS to AFFA mass ratios of 10:1, 10:2, and 10:5 (AB500-1, AB500-2, and AB500-5), was used to remediate lead (Pb)-contaminated soil. Compared with pristine biochars (BCs), ABs were enriched with oxygen-containing functional groups (Si–O–Si and Si–O) and aromatic structures. The ABs prepared at lower pyrolytic temperature (≤500 °C) and lower ratio of CS to AFFA (10:1) showed higher yield and stability. The contents of Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)-extractable Pb and DTPA-CaCl2-triethanolamine (DTPA)-extractable Pb were generally lower in the soils amended with ABs than BCs. Compared with other ABs such as AB300-1, AB500-2, AB500-5, and AB700-1, the soil amended with AB500-1 had lower contents of TCLP and DTPA-extractable Pb (24% reduction), exhibiting superior performance in stabilizing Pb in the soil. The gradual decrease of DTPA-extractable Pb content in the soil with increasing dosage of AB500-1 amendments suggests that AB500-1 facilitated the conversion of bioavailable Pb to the stable and less toxic residual fractions. Specifically, the highest percentage of residual fraction of Pb in soil amended with AB500-1 was 14%. Correlation analyses showed that the soil DTPA-extractable Pb content decreased with the increase of soil pH and cation-exchange capacity (CEC) value. ABs stabilize Pb in the soils mainly via electrostatic attraction, precipitation, cation-π interaction, cation exchange, and complexation. These findings provide insights for producing functionalized biochar composites from industrial waste like FA and biomass waste for remediating the soils polluted by heavy metals.

Evaluating the effectiveness of sulfidated nano zerovalent iron and sludge co-application for reducing metal mobility in contaminated soil

Sewage sludge has long been applied to soils as a fertilizer yet may be enriched with leachable metal(loid)s and other pollutants. Sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) has proven effective at metal sorption; however, risks associated with the use of engineered nanoparticles cannot be neglected. This study investigated the effects of the co-application of composted sewage sludge with S-nZVI for the stabilization of Cd, Pb, Fe, Zn. Five treatments (control, Fe grit, composted sludge, S-nZVI, composted sludge and S-nZVI), two leaching fluids; synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) fluid were used, samples were incubated at different time intervals of 1 week, 1, 3, and 6 months. Fe grit proved most efficient in reducing the concentration of extractable metals in the batch experiment; the mixture of composted sludge and S-nZVI was the most effective in reducing the leachability of metals in the column systems, while S-nZVI was the most efficient for reducing about 80% of Zn concentration in soil solution. Thus, the combination of two amendments, S-nZVI incorporated with composted sewage sludge and Fe grit proved most effective at reducing metal leaching and possibly lowering the associated risks. Future work should investigate the longer-term efficiency of this combination.
