Satellite-based assessment of water use and leaf area efficiencies of dryland conifer forests along an aridity gradient

Dryland forests worldwide are increasingly threatened by drought stress due to climate change. Understanding the relationships between forest structure and function is essential for managing dryland forests to adapt to these changes. We investigated the structure-function relationships in four dryland conifer forests distributed along a semiarid to subhumid climatic aridity gradient. Forest structure was represented by leaf area index (LAI) and function by gross primary productivity (GPP), evapotranspiration (ET), and the derived efficiencies of water use (WUE = GPP/ET) and leaf area (LAE = GPP/LAI). Estimates of GPP and ET were based on the observed relationships between high-resolution vegetation indices from VENμS and Sentinel-2A satellites and flux data from three eddy covariance towers in the study regions between November 2015 to October 2018. The red-edge-based MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI) from VENμS and Sentinel-2A showed strong correlations to flux tower GPP and ET measurements for the three sites (R2cal > 0.91, R2val > 0.84). Using our approach, we showed that as LAI decreased with decreasing aridity index (AI) (i.e., dryer conditions), estimated GPP and ET decreased (R2 > 0.8 to LAI), while WUE (R2 = 0.68 to LAI) and LAE increased. The observed global-scale patterns are associated with a variety of forest vegetation characteristics, at the local scale, such as tree species composition and density. However, our results point towards a canopy-level mechanism, where the ecosystem-LAI and resultant proportion of sun-exposed vs. shaded leaves are primary determinants of WUE and LAE along the studied climatic aridity gradient. This work demonstrates the importance of high-resolution (spatially and spectrally) remote sensing data conjugated with flux tower data for monitoring dryland forests and understanding the intricate structure-function interactions in their response to drying conditions.

Generating high-resolution total canopy SIF emission from TROPOMI data: Algorithm and application

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is a rapidly advancing front in modeling global terrestrial gross primary production (GPP). Canopy total SIF emissions (SIFtotal) are mechanistically linked to the plant photosynthesis, and can be estimated from satellite observed SIF (SIFobs) through radiative transfer modeling. However, the current satellite SIFobs and thus SIFtotal are available only at coarse spatial resolutions from several kilometers to tens of kilometers, inhibiting the application at fine spatial scales. Here, we proposed an algorithm to generate both global high-resolution SIFtotal (HSIFtotal) and high-resolution SIFobs (HSIFobs) at 1 km from low-resolution SIFobs (LSIFobs) from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), which has a spatial resolution at nadir of 3.5 km by 5.6–7 km. Our statistical method is based on the law of energy conservation and uses satellite derived fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation, fluorescence efficiency, and the escape probability of fluorescence. We evaluated the accuracy of our HSIFtotal using the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 SIF (R2 = 0.78). We found that the spatial resolution had clear effects on the relationship between HSIFtotal and GPP. We also compared HSIFtotal to 8-day averaged tower GPP from 135 flux sites and found that they were better correlated when HSIFtotal was averaged over a 1-km radius around the tower than when averaged over a larger radius. Our study provided a unique high-resolution HSIFtotal product, which will advance the estimation of GPP by extrapolating site-level relationships to the global scale.

Global modeling diurnal gross primary production from OCO-3 solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence

Photosynthesis plays a crucial role in regulating the global carbon cycle and mitigating climate change. The diurnal variation in photosynthesis provides key information on the responses of ecosystems to environmental drivers, but there is a critical gap in the large-scale estimation of diurnal photosynthesis. In the last decade, satellite estimates of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) have been found to mimic the seasonality of photosynthesis. Recently, the deployment of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3) on the International Space Station has provided the opportunity to retrieve SIF at different times of the day. Here we utilized OCO-3 measurements to estimate and analyze diurnal cycles of SIF and gross primary production (GPP) at the global scale. We first mitigated the sun-sensor geometry effects on nadir-mode OCO-3 SIF (SIFnadir) at the sub-diurnal scale (hourly) by deriving the total canopy SIF emission (SIFtotal) using radiative transfer theory. Next, we generated the spatially and temporally continuous hourly SIFnadir and SIFtotal using artificial neural networks under clear-sky conditions, whose extrapolation ability was evaluated using the data from independent years. Compared with SIFnadir, the diurnal relationship between clear-sky SIFtotal and GPP from 38 homogeneous flux sites had smaller variations in the slope (the coefficient of variation was 0.07 vs 0.19). In addition, a correction to account for the bias between clear-sky and overcast conditions was used to estimate all-sky GPP from clear-sky SIFtotal and the resulting GPP was strongly correlated with tower GPP (R2 = 0.75; RMSE = 3.53 μmol/m2/s). Our results demonstrated that the new OCO-3 SIF trained GPP product (GPPSIF) was able to depict the diurnal pattern of photosynthesis globally, capturing also the physiologically hysteresis or afternoon depression of photosynthesis. By doing so, hourly GPPSIF has the potential to improve the modeling of terrestrial photosynthesis and the projection of the global carbon cycle under climate change.

Estimation of global GPP from GOME-2 and OCO-2 SIF by considering the dynamic variations of GPP-SIF relationship

Previous studies have indicated that gross primary production (GPP) and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) have a strong linear relationship, and usually exhibit similar spatial and temporal patterns. However, the responses of GPP and SIF to the environment may be different, which will lead to a variant GPP-SIF relationship. To better investigate the impact of the dynamics in GPP-SIF relationship on GPP estimation, we established two GPP models. An inconstant GPP/SIF ratio model (Dynamic-Ratio model, DR model) was first established using meteorological variables and leaf area index (LAI) based on random forest regression algorithm. The model was then used to estimate GPP (referred to as GPP_DR) with different satellite SIF datasets i.e., downscaled fine resolution SIF from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (GOSIF) and Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment‐2 SIF (downscaled GOME-2 SIF). The second model (SIF-Climate-LAI model, SCL model) was also based on the random forest algorithm but was directly driven by meteorological variables, LAI and SIF data, and no GPP/SIF ratio was used in the model. As a comparison, the linear relationship between GPP and SIF was also established using eddy covariance tower GPP (GPP_EC) and SIF datasets based on linear regression without considering variations of GPP-SIF relationship (Fixed-Ratio model, FR model). Considering the spatio-temporal variations of GPP-SIF relationship can improve the GPP simulation to a certain extent by mitigating the underestimation of peak GPP values. This improvement was found for both DR and SCL models. Owing to the dynamic variations of GPP/SIF ratio and associated uncertainties, the performance of DR model was not as good as that of SCL model. GPP estimation derived from GOSIF matched better with GPP_EC than that from downscaled GOME-2 SIF for DR, SCL and FR models. Our findings suggested that GPP can be better derived from satellite SIF by considering the variations of GPP-SIF relationship.

High spatial resolution vegetation gross primary production product: Algorithm and validation

Vegetation gross primary production (GPP) in terrestrial ecosystems is a key element of the carbon cycle, and its estimation highly determines the accuracy of carbon budget assessments. Currently, several global datasets of vegetation production are available at coarse or moderate spatial resolutions, but globally they still have large uncertainties, which hindered the application of GPP, especially in strongly heterogeneous agriculture ecosystems and mountainous areas. Here, we used the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach with the footprints of FLUXNET data to optimize the parameters of the high resolution of Global LAnd Surface Satellite (Hi-GLASS) GPP algorithm (i.e., the revised EC-LUE model) using 30 m spatial resolution Landsat data as driving data. Then, we generated a new set of algorithm parameters for high resolution GPP estimates. We used the optimized parameters with integrating footprint to calculate Hi-GLASS GPP based on Landsat data and our results revealed that on average, Hi-GLASS GPP explained 76% of variance in tower GPP at the total of 78 sites across ten vegetation types. Moreover, compared with previous 500 m GPP product such as GLASS GPP and MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) GPP, our optimized Hi-GLASS algorithm using Landsat data had large superiority in simulating GPP for wetlands, savannas, shrubland and C3, C4 cropland ecosystems, and had a slightly improvement for deciduous broadleaf forests and evergreen broadleaf forest ecosystem. Our study is an effort to optimize and quantify parameter uncertainty of Hi-GLASS algorithm using high spatial resolution (30 m) Landsat data and improve the high resolution GPP estimation for better understanding global ecosystem carbon dynamics and carbon-climate feedbacks.

Estimating Global Gross Primary Production from Sun-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Data and Auxiliary Information Using Machine Learning Methods

The gross primary production (GPP) is important for regulating the global carbon cycle and climate change. Recent studies have shown that sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is highly advantageous regarding GPP monitoring. However, using SIF to estimate GPP on a global scale is limited by the lack of a stable SIF-GPP relationship. Here, we estimated global monthly GPP at 0.05° spatial resolution for the period 2001–2017, using the global OCO-2-based SIF product (GOSIF) and other auxiliary data. Large amounts of flux tower data are not available to the public and the available data is not evenly distributed globally and has a smaller measured footprint than the GOSIF data. This makes it difficult to use the flux tower GPP directly as an input to the model. Our strategy is to scale in situ measurements using two moderate-resolution satellite GPP products (MODIS and GLASS). Specifically, these two satellite GPP products were calibrated and eventually integrated by in situ measurements (FLUXNET2015 dataset, 83 sites), which was then used to train a machine learning model (GBRT) that performed the best among five evaluated models. The GPP estimates from GOSIF were highly accurate coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.58, root mean square error (RMSE) = 2.74 g C·m−2, bias = –0.34 g C·m−2) as validated by in situ measurements, and exhibited reasonable spatial and seasonal variations on a global scale. Our method requires fewer input variables and has higher computational efficiency than other satellite GPP estimation methods. Satellite-based SIF data provide a unique opportunity for more accurate, near real-time GPP mapping in the future.

ECOSTRESS estimates gross primary production with fine spatial resolution for different times of day from the International Space Station

Accurate estimation of gross primary production (GPP), the amount of carbon absorbed by plants via photosynthesis, is of great importance for understanding ecosystem functions, carbon cycling, and climate-carbon feedbacks. Remote sensing has been widely used to quantify GPP at regional to global scales. However, polar-orbiting satellites (e.g., Landsat, Sentinel, Terra, Aqua, Suomi NPP, JPSS, OCO-2) lack the capability to examine the diurnal cycles of GPP because they observe the Earth's surface at the same time of day. The Ecosystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS), launched in June 2018, observes the land surface temperature (LST) at different times of day with high spatial resolution (70 m × 70 m) from the International Space Station (ISS). Here, we made use of ECOSTRESS data to predict instantaneous GPP with high spatial resolution for different times of day using a data-driven approach based on machine learning. The predictive GPP model used instantaneous ECOSTRESS LST observations along with the daily enhanced vegetation index (EVI) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), land cover type from the National Land Cover Database (NCLD), and instantaneous meteorological data from the ERA5 reanalysis dataset. Our model estimated instantaneous GPP across 56 flux tower sites fairly well (R2 = 0.88, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) = 2.42 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1). The instantaneous GPP estimates driven by ECOSTRESS LST captured the diurnal variations of tower GPP for different biomes. We then produced multiple high resolution ECOSTRESS GPP maps for the central and northern California. We found distinct changes in GPP at different times of day (e.g., higher in late morning, peak around noon, approaching zero at dusk), and clear differences in productivity across landscapes (e.g., savannas, croplands, grasslands, and forests) for different times of day. ECOSTRESS GPP also captured the seasonal variations in the diurnal cycling of photosynthesis. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using ECOSTRESS data for producing instantaneous GPP (i.e., GPP for the acquisition time of the ECOSTRESS data) for different times of day. The ECOSTRESS GPP can shed light on how plant photosynthesis and water use vary over the course of the diurnal cycle and inform agricultural management and future improvement of terrestrial biosphere/land surface models.

Potential of hotspot solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence for better tracking terrestrial photosynthesis.

Remote sensing of solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) opens a new window for quantifying a key ecological variable, the terrestrial ecosystem gross primary production (GPP), because of the revealed strong SIF-GPP correlation. However, similar to many other remotely sensed metrics, SIF observations suffer from the sun-sensor geometry effects, which may have important impacts on the SIF-GPP relationship but remain poorly understood. Here we used remotely sensed SIF, globally distributed tower GPP data, and a mechanistic model to provide a systematic analysis. Our results reveal that leaf physiology, canopy structure, and sun-sensor geometries all affect the SIF-GPP relationship. In particular, we found that SIF observations in the sun-tracking hotspot direction can be a better proxy of GPP due to the similar responses of light use efficiency and SIF escaping probability in the hotspot direction to the increasing incoming solar radiation. Such conclusions are supported by a variety of modeling simulations and satellite observations over various plant function types, at different time scales and with satellite observational modes. This study demonstrates the potential and advantage of normalizing SIF observations to the hotspot direction for better global GPP estimations. This study also demonstrates the great potentials of current and future spaceborne sun-tracking satellite missions for a significant improvement in measuring and monitoring, at a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, the changes in terrestrial ecosystem GPP in response to anticipated changes in the Earth's environmental conditions.

Improving the Capability of the SCOPE Model for Simulating Solar-Induced Fluorescence and Gross Primary Production Using Data from OCO-2 and Flux Towers

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) measured from space has shed light on the diagnosis of gross primary production (GPP) and has emerged as a promising way to quantify plant photosynthesis. The SCOPE model can explicitly simulate SIF and GPP, while the uncertainty in key model parameters can lead to significant uncertainty in simulations. Previous work has constrained uncertain parameters in the SCOPE model using coarse-resolution SIF observations from satellites, while few studies have used finer resolution SIF measured from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) to improve the model. Here, we identified the sensitive parameters to SIF and GPP estimation, and improved the performance of SCOPE in simulating SIF and GPP for temperate forests by constraining the physiological parameters relating to SIF and GPP by combining satellite-based SIF measurements (e.g., OCO-2) with flux tower GPP data. Our study showed that SIF had weak capability in constraining maximum carboxylation capacity (Vcmax), while GPP could constrain this parameter well. The OCO-2 SIF data constrained fluorescence quantum efficiency (fqe) well and improved the performance of SCOPE in SIF simulation. However, the use of the OCO-2 SIF alone cannot significantly improve the GPP simulation. The use of both satellite SIF and flux tower GPP data as constraints improved the performance of the model for simulating SIF and GPP simultaneously. This analysis is useful for improving the capability of the SCOPE model, understanding the relationships between GPP and SIF, and improving the estimation of both SIIF and GPP by incorporating satellite SIF products and flux tower data.

Dynamics of phenology and its response to climatic variables in a warm-temperate mixed plantation

Vegetation phenology is an integrated indicator of vegetation growth and development in response to climate, and it is one of the important variables regulating carbon flux in forest ecosystems. Land surface phenology derived from different remote sensing products and their relationships with flux tower gross primary production (GPP) data have been paid much attention. Remotely sensed phenology was retrieved based on greenness, while GPP-based phenology was extracted based on photosynthesis. However, exploring the differences between remotely sensed and GPP-based phenology are limited. In this study, we compared phenological metrics obtained from flux tower GPP of a mixed plantation with phenological metrics derived using MODIS EVI and MCD12Q2 from 2006 to 2017. We also explored phenological transitions and the response of phenology to climatic variables. The results showed that the 16-day composited EVI time series was in agreement with the 16-day composited GPP time series (R2 = 0.86, p < 0.001). The root mean squared deviation values between flux tower GPP- and the MODIS EVI- and MCD12Q2-retrieved phenology dates were 8, 13, 34, and 16 days and 8, 19, 28, and 18 days for the start of the growing season (SOS), end of the growing season (EOS), peak of the growing season (POS), and growing season length (GSL), respectively, suggesting that MODIS EVI and MCD12Q2 were valuable products for retrieving the vegetation phenological dynamics, except for POS. The partial correlation analysis showed that temperature had a more important role in phenophase than precipitation. Rising temperatures in spring triggered earlier SOS. Significant correlations were found between EOSEVI, EOSMCD12Q2, EOSGPP, and preseason temperature (60 d prior to EOS) (p < 0.05), indicating that warming over the preseason resulted in earlier EOS. These findings help to understand the discrepancies between MODIS EVI, MCD12Q2, and flux tower GPP-based phenologies, their responses to climatic factors, and further confirm that precipitation should be taken into account to improve the accuracy of phenology models.

Assessing MODIS carbon and water fluxes in grasslands and shrublands in semiarid regions using eddy covariance tower data

ABSTRACT Gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) are two important fluxes between the terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Remote sensing data-driven models have been successfully used to estimate carbon and water fluxes in various ecosystems, but the models are still underperforming in dryland. In this study, the agreement between the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products, MODIS data-driven models, and the eddy covariance (EC) tower observation data were tested for two different ecosystem sites in arid regions in Xinjiang, China. The results convincingly indicated that the MODIS products can successfully capture the temporal GPP and ET variables for grasslands and shrublands, but these results have large biases. The MODIS GPP products certified contributed 88% of the EC observed GPP for the grassland but 16% for the shrubland. The temperature and greenness (TG) model clearly showed favourable correspondence with tower GPP observed in arid regions, with the coefficient of determination (R 2) of 0.91 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 17.65 g C m−2 16 days−1. The ET performance was evaluated at two sites, yielding R 2 values of 0.77 and 0.34 for the grassland and shrubland, respectively. Our study showed that the source of uncertainties comes from the remotely sensed data input in GPP and ET algorithms.

Synergistic use of SMAP and OCO-2 data in assessing the responses of ecosystem productivity to the 2018 U.S. drought

Soil moisture and gross primary productivity (GPP) estimates from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) provide new opportunities for understanding the relationship between soil moisture and terrestrial photosynthesis over large regions. Here we explored the potential of the synergistic use of SMAP and OCO-2 based data for monitoring the responses of ecosystem productivity to drought. We used complementary observational information on root-zone soil moisture and GPP (9 km) from SMAP and fine-resolution SIF (0.05°; GOSIF) derived from OCO-2 SIF soundings. We compared the spatial pattern and temporal evolution of anomalies of these variables over the conterminous U.S. during the 2018 drought, and examined to what extent they could characterize the drought-induced variations of flux tower GPP and crop yield data. Our results showed that SMAP GPP and GOSIF, both freely available online, could well capture the spatial extent and dynamics of the impacts of drought indicated by the U.S. Drought Monitor maps and the SMAP root-zone soil moisture deficit. Over the U.S. Southwest, monthly anomalies of soil moisture showed significant positive correlations with those of SMAP GPP (R2 = 0.44, p < 0.001) and GOSIF (R2 = 0.76, p < 0.001), demonstrating strong water availability constraints on plant productivity across dryland ecosystems. We further found that SMAP GPP and GOSIF captured the impact of drought on tower GPP and crop yield. Our results suggest that synergistic use of SMAP and OCO-2 data products can reveal the drought evolution and its impact on ecosystem productivity and carbon uptake at multiple spatial and temporal scales, and demonstrate the value of SMAP and OCO-2 for studying ecosystem function, carbon cycling, and climate change.

Spatio-temporal variability of gross primary productivity in moist and dry deciduous plant functional types of Northwest Himalayan foothills of India using temperature-greenness model

The present study aims to estimate the spatio-temporal variability of gross primary productivity (GPP) in moist and dry deciduous plant functional types (PFTs) of northwest Himalayan foothills of India using remote sensing-based Temperature-Greenness (TG) model and to study the response of GPP to environmental variables. TG model was implemented in Google Earth Engine platform using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer enhanced vegetation index (MOD13A2) and land surface temperature (MOD11A2) from 2001 to 2018. The mean monthly GPP ranged from 1.80 to 18.57 gCm−2day−1 in moist deciduous and from 0.20 to 12.06 gCm−2day−1 in dry deciduous PFTs. On site-scale validation with eddy covariance flux tower GPP, the modelled GPP showed R2=0.79 for moist deciduous and R2=0.77 for dry deciduous PFT. Leaf area index showed the highest correlation with the predicted GPP (r = 0.74 for moist and 0.83 for dry deciduous PFTs). The study revealed that TG model could predict the long-term forest GPP with minimum in-situ inputs.

Tracking Seasonal and Interannual Variability in Photosynthetic Downregulation in Response to Water Stress at a Temperate Deciduous Forest

AbstractThe understanding and modeling of photosynthetic dynamics affected by climate variability can be highly uncertain. In this paper, we examined a well‐characterized eddy covariance site in a drought‐prone temperate deciduous broadleaf forest combining tower measurements and satellite observations. We find that an increase in spring temperature usually leads to enhanced spring gross primary production (GPP), but a GPP reduction in late growing season due to water limitation. We evaluated how well a coupled fluorescence‐photosynthesis model (SCOPE) and satellite data sets track the interannual and seasonal variations of tower GPP from 2007 to 2016. In SCOPE, a simple stress factor scaling of Vcmax as a linear function of observed predawn leaf water potential (ψpd) shows a good agreement between modeled and measured interannual variations in both GPP and solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment‐2 (GOME‐2). The modeled and satellite‐observed changes in SIFyield are ~30% smaller than corresponding changes in light use efficiency (LUE) under severe stress, for which a common linear SIF to GPP scaling would underestimate the stress reduction in GPP. Overall, GOME‐2 SIF tracks interannual tower GPP variations better than satellite vegetations indices (VIs) representing canopy “greenness.” However, it is still challenging to attribute observed SIF variations unequivocally to greenness or physiological changes due to large GOME‐2 footprint. Higher‐resolution SIF data sets (e.g., TROPOMI) already show the potential to well capture the downregulation of late‐season GPP and could pave the way to better disentangle canopy structural and physiological changes in the future.

Evaluating the Performance of Sentinel-3A OLCI Land Products for Gross Primary Productivity Estimation Using AmeriFlux Data

Accurate and reliable estimation of gross primary productivity (GPP) is of great significance in monitoring global carbon cycles. The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) and vegetation index products of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) are currently the most widely used data in evaluating GPP. The launch of the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) onboard the Sentinel-3 satellite provides the FAPAR and the OLCI Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (OTCI) products with higher temporal resolution and smoother spatial distribution than MODIS, having the potential to monitor terrain GPP. OTCI is one of the red-edge indices and is particularly sensitive to canopy chlorophyll content related to GPP. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the performance of OLCI FAPAR and OTCI for the estimation of GPP across seven biomes in 2017–2018. To this end, OLCI FAPAR and OTCI products in combination with insitu meteorological data were first integrated into the MODIS GPP algorithm and in three OTCI-driven models to simulate GPP. The modeled GPP (GPPOLCI-FAPAR and GPPOTCI) were then compared with flux tower GPP (GPPEC) for each site. Furthermore, the GPPOLCI-FAPAR and GPP derived from the MODIS FAPAR (GPPMODIS-FAPAR) were compared. Results showed that the performance of GPPOLCI-FAPAR was varied in different sites, with the highest R2 of 0.76 and lowest R2 of 0.45. The OTCI-driven models that include APAR data exhibited a significant relationship with GPPEC for all sites, and models using only OTCI provided the most varied performance, with the relationship between GPPOTCI and GPPEC from strong to nonsignificant. Moreover, GPPOLCI-FAPAR (R2 = 0.55) performed better than GPPMODIS-FAPAR (R2 = 0.44) across all biomes. These results demonstrate the potential of OLCI FAPAR and OTCI products in GPP estimation, and they also provide the basis for their combination with the soon-to-launch Fluorescence Explorer satellite and their integration with the Sentinel-3 land surface temperature product into light use models for GPP monitoring at regional and global scales.

Evaluation of the LSA-SAF gross primary production product derived from SEVIRI/MSG data (MGPP)

The objective of this study is to describe a completely new 10-day gross primary production (GPP) product (MGPP LSA-411) based on data from the geostationary SEVIRI/MSG satellite within the LSA SAF (Land Surface Analysis SAF) as part of the SAF (Satellite Application Facility) network of EUMETSAT.The methodology relies on the Monteith approach. It considers that GPP is proportional to the absorbed photosynthetically active radiation APAR and the proportionality factor is known as the light use efficiency ε. A parameterization of this factor is proposed as the product of a εmax, corresponding to the canopy functioning under optimal conditions, and a coefficient quantifying the reduction of photosynthesis as a consequence of water stress. A three years data record (2015–2017) was used in an assessment against site-level eddy covariance (EC) tower GPP estimates and against other Earth Observation (EO) based GPP products. The site-level comparison indicated that the MGPP product performed better than the other EO based GPP products with 48% of the observations being below the optimal accuracy (absolute error < 1.0 g m−2 day−1) and 75% of these data being below the user requirement threshold (absolute error < 3.0 g m−2 day−1). The largest discrepancies between the MGPP product and the other GPP products were found for forests whereas small differences were observed for the other land cover types. The integration of this GPP product with the ensemble of LSA-SAF MSG products is conducive to meet user needs for a better understanding of ecosystem processes and for improved understanding of anthropogenic impact on ecosystem services.

Mapping Photosynthesis Solely from Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence: A Global, Fine-Resolution Dataset of Gross Primary Production Derived from OCO-2

Accurately quantifying gross primary production (GPP) globally is critical for assessing plant productivity, carbon balance, and carbon-climate feedbacks, while current GPP estimates exhibit substantial uncertainty. Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) observed by the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) has offered unprecedented opportunities for monitoring land photosynthesis, while its sparse coverage remains a bottleneck for mapping finer-resolution GPP globally. Here, we used the global, OCO-2-based SIF product (GOSIF) and linear relationships between SIF and GPP to map GPP globally at a 0.05° spatial resolution and 8-day time step for the period from 2000 to 2017. To account for the uncertainty of GPP estimates resulting from the SIF-GPP relationship, we used a total of eight SIF-GPP relationships with different forms (universal and biome-specific, with and without intercept) at both site and grid cell levels to estimate GPP. Our results showed that all of the eight SIF-GPP relationships performed well in estimating GPP globally. The ensemble mean 8-day GPP was generally highly correlated with flux tower GPP for 91 eddy covariance flux sites across the globe (R2 = 0.74, Root Mean Square Error = 1.92 g C m−2 d−1). Our fine-resolution GPP estimates showed reasonable spatial and seasonal variations across the globe and fully captured both seasonal cycles and spatial patterns present in our coarse-resolution (1°) GPP estimates based on coarse-resolution SIF data directly aggregated from discrete OCO-2 soundings. SIF-GPP relationships with different forms could lead to significant differences in annual GPP particularly in the tropics. Our ensemble global annual GPP estimate (135.5 ± 8.8 Pg C yr−1) is between the median estimate of non-process based methods and the median estimate of process-based models. Our GPP estimates showed interannual variability in many regions and exhibited increasing trends in many parts of the globe particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. With the availability of high-quality, gridded SIF observations from space (e.g., TROPOMI, FLEX), our novel approach does not rely on any other input data (e.g., climate data, soil properties) and therefore can map GPP solely based on satellite SIF observations and potentially lead to more accurate GPP estimates at regional to global scales. The use of a universal SIF-GPP relationship versus biome-specific relationships can also avoid the uncertainty associated with land cover maps. Our novel, independent GPP product (GOSIF GPP), freely available at our data repository, will be valuable for studying photosynthesis, carbon cycle, agricultural production, and ecosystem responses to climate change and disturbances, informing ecosystem management, and benchmarking terrestrial biosphere and Earth system models.

Evaluating the Performance of Satellite-Derived Vegetation Indices for Estimating Gross Primary Productivity Using FLUXNET Observations across the Globe

Satellite-derived vegetation indices (VIs) have been widely used to approximate or estimate gross primary productivity (GPP). However, it remains unclear how the VI-GPP relationship varies with indices, biomes, timescales, and the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) effect. We examined the relationship between VIs and GPP for 121 FLUXNET sites across the globe and assessed how the VI-GPP relationship varied among a variety of biomes at both monthly and annual timescales. We used three widely-used VIs: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and 2-band EVI (EVI2) as well as a new VI - NIRV and used surface reflectance both with and without BRDF correction from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) to calculate these indices. The resulting traditional (NDVI, EVI, EVI2, and NIRV) and BRDF-corrected (NDVIBRDF, EVIBRDF, EVI2BRDF, and NIRV, BRDF) VIs were used to examine the VI-GPP relationship. At the monthly scale, all VIs were moderate or strong predictors of GPP, and the BRDF correction improved their performance. EVI2BRDF and NIRV, BRDF had similar performance in capturing the variations in tower GPP as did the MODIS GPP product. The VIs explained lower variance in tower GPP at the annual scale than at the monthly scale. The BRDF-correction of surface reflectance did not improve the VI-GPP relationship at the annual scale. The VIs had similar capability in capturing the interannual variability in tower GPP as MODIS GPP. VIs were influenced by temperature and water stresses and were more sensitive to temperature stress than to water stress. VIs in combination with environmental factors could improve the prediction of GPP than VIs alone. Our findings can help us better understand how the VI-GPP relationship varies among indices, biomes, and timescales and how the BRDF effect influences the VI-GPP relationship.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Using Vegetation Indices Based on Red-Edge Reflectance from Sentinel-2 to Estimate Gross Primary Productivity

Gross primary productivity (GPP) is the most important component of terrestrial carbon flux. Red-edge (680–780 nm) reflectance is sensitive to leaf chlorophyll content, which is directly correlated with photosynthesis as the pigment pool, and it has the potential to improve GPP estimation. The European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel-2A and B satellites provide red-edge bands at 20-m spatial resolution on a five-day revisit period, which can be used for global estimation of GPP. Previous studies focused mostly on improving cropland GPP estimation using red-edge bands. In this study, we firstly evaluated the relationship between eight vegetation indices (VIs) retrieved from Sentinel-2 imagery in association with incident photosynthetic active radiation (PARin) and carbon flux tower GPP (GPPEC) across three forest and two grassland sites in Australia. We derived a time series of five red-edge VIs and three non-red-edge VIs over the CO2 flux tower footprints at 16-day time intervals and compared both temporal and spatial variations. The results showed that the relationship between the red-edge index (CIr, ρ 783 ρ 705 − 1 ) multiplied by PARin and GPPEC had the highest correlation (R2 = 0.77, root-mean-square error (RMSE) = 0.81 gC∙m−2∙day−1) at the two grassland sites. The CIr also showed consistency (rRMSE defined as RMSE/mean GPP, lower than 0.25) across forest and grassland sites. The high spatial resolution of the Sentinel-2 data provided more detailed information to adequately characterize the GPP variance at spatially heterogeneous areas. The high revisit period of Sentinel-2 exhibited temporal variance in GPP at the grassland sites; however, at forest sites, the flux-tower-based GPP variance could not be fully tracked by the limited satellite images. These results suggest that the high-spatial-resolution red-edge index from Sentinel-2 can improve large-scale spatio-temporal GPP assessments.

Use of Sun-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Obtained by OCO-2 and GOME-2 for GPP Estimates of the Heihe River Basin, China

Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) provides a new method for monitoring vegetation photosynthesis from space and has been widely used to estimate gross primary productivity (GPP). However, the ability of SIF obtained from the Orbital Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2 SIF) and Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2) to estimate GPP in the cold and arid region of Heihe River Basin remains unclear because previous comparisons were insufficient. Here, we choose maize and alpine meadow to evaluate the performance of SIF obtained by OCO-2 and GOME-2 in GPP estimations. The results of this study show that daily SIF757 had stronger correlations with daily tower GPP than daily SIF771, and the correlation between daily SIF757 and daily tower GPP was stronger than the correlation between 16-d averaged SIF740 and 16-d averaged tower GPP. The 16-d averaged absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and reconstructed sun-induced fluorescence (RSIF) had the strongest linear correlations with 16-d averaged tower GPP. GPP_VPM and GPP_RSIF exhibited the best performance in GPP estimation, closely followed by GPP_SIF757, then GPP_SIF771 and GPP_ SIF740. We also found that the robustness of the correlation coefficients of OCO-2 SIF with GOME-2 SIF was highly dependent on the size of their spatial footprint overlaps, indicating that the spatial differences between OCO-2 and GOME-2 footprints contribute to the differences in GPP estimates between OCO-2 and GOME-2. In addition, the differences of viewing zenith angle (VZA), cloud contamination, scale effects, and environmental scalars (Tscalar × Wscalar) can result in differences between OCO-2 SIF and GOME-2 SIF.
