American visceral leishmaniasis in an ecotourism area

Visceral Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease that represents one of the most important public health problems in the world. This neglected tropical zoonosis shows an increasing urbanization process, since the end of the 1980s. The increase in ecotourism practices, mainly in regions nearby urban areas facilitates the interaction between companion animals, humans, and wildlife. Known as the land of the waterfalls, Carrancas is a 728 km² Brazilian municipality located at 1052m, in the southeast of Brazil. The region is surrounded by urban areas with autochthonous cases of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis and lacking studies on the presence of vectors of Leishmania spp. The municipality is part of the most important ecotourism area, a renowned tourist destination in Brazil and abroad called Royal Road or “Estrada Real – ER. Due to the increasing number of travelers involved in ecotourism and exposing them to risk factors for diseases, we propose to investigate the presence of phlebotomine sandflies in a protected area in the southern state of Minas Gerais, which is constantly visited by tourists over the world. Six specimens of Lutzomyia longipalpis were captured in Carrancas. This is the first report of L. longipalpis in an ecotourism area south of Minas Gerais State. This record contributes to our knowledge of the geographical distribution of the main vector of American Visceral Leishmaniasis in Carrancas and alerts us to the need for permanent surveillance and health education at this location.

Tourism development discourse dynamics in a context of conflicts between mining and nature conservation in the Brazilian Cerrado Hotspot

The Cerrado is a world hotspot for nature conservation and an important tourist destination in Brazil. This region has been subjected to intensive land conversion for the production of commodities, which has led to the eruption of socio-environmental conflicts between tourism and extractive industries. In this article, we explore the dynamics of tourism development discourses that underpin the conflicts generated by mining projects in the town of Cavalcante and seek to inform on more adequate policymaking and promote human development. We employed multi-methods data collection techniques and a discourse analysis approach to assess the tourism development discourses that compete in local policy arenas and reflect upon policy outcomes that result from this process. We develop a three-stage chronology to show the dynamics of tourism discourses and reveal that sustainable tourism discourse served to generate a neoliberal modernization discourse. However, growing dissatisfaction with both tourism modernization and mining has generated resistance against mining among the affected communities. We conclude that leisure tourism and tourism modernization should be separated in public planning processes in contexts where socio-environmental conflicts are present, and that governmental and institutional mediation require a certain level of trust to ensure more balanced human development in such situations.

Invisibilidade dos negros na história de Gramado/RS

O município de Gramado, no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, é reconhecido destino turístico no Brasil, e apresentado como um espaço de colonização alemã, italiana e portuguesa. A ausência dos negros na história oficial, a inexistência de pesquisas acadêmicas sobre o assunto e a necessidade de material pedagógico para auxiliar no ensino de história e cultura afro-brasileira, promoveu o início dessa pesquisa que está em estágio preliminar. Pesquisas acadêmicas no entorno de Gramado comprovam significativa população de descendência africana no século XIX, além disso uma extensa rede de compadrio entre proprietários de terras e afro-brasileiros. A ausência de dados oficiais conduz a pesquisa para a análise dos lugares de memória, por meio de indícios encontrados em livros de memorialistas locais, fotografias e paisagens. Os resultados coletados até o presente indicam que os negros sempre estiveram presentes na história da região, tanto na frente de expansão quanto na frente pioneira, e também apontam para um provável esquecimento proposital dessa população.

DNA barcoding reveals the mislabeling of fish in a popular tourist destination in Brazil.

The consumption of raw fish has increased considerably in the West, since it is said to be potentially healthier than processed fish (for containing omega 3 and 6, essential amino acids and vitamins). However this potential benefit, as well as the taste, value and even the risk of extinction are not the same for all species of fish, constituting grounds for fraud. Using the principles of the DNA barcode we revealed mislabelling of fish in Japanese restaurants and fishmarkets in Florianópolis, a popular tourist capital in Brazil. We sequenced the COI gene of 65 samples from fisheries and 80 from restaurants and diagnosed 30% of mislabeled samples in fisheries and 26% in restaurants. We discussed that frauds may have occurred for different reasons: to circumvent surveillance on threatened species; to sell fish with sizes smaller than allowed or abundant species as being a much rarer species (law of supply); to induce product consumption using species with better taste. It should be noted that some substitutions are derived from incorrect identification and are not a fraud per se; they are due to confusion of popular names or misunderstanding by the sellers. Therefore, we suggest the implementation of a systematic regulatory program conducted by governmental agencies to reduce mislabelling in order to avoid further damage to the community (in health and financial issues) and fish stocks.

Competitividade estratégica no setor de meios de hospedagem catarinense: um estudo exploratório

The dynamic context of means of accommodation is characterized by a constant updating in products and services, a frequent change in preferences expressed by their customers, and also the impact of macroeconomic and institutional environment has on this area, as well as other factors such as seasonality. Due to growing demands in the flow of people and capital all over the world, the hospitality sector has demanded high levels of professionalism. So, the purpose of this article, an exploratory study of means of accommodation in Santa Catarina – considered as the best tourist destination in Brazil – was to investigate its current competitive environment. Methodologically, the study was guided by an initial literature research, supported by quantitative exploratory analysis of the Cadastur data system, which is provided by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with official bodies of tourism. At the end of the study, more than the resulting figures, the study pointed to the urgent need of carrying out studies at regular intervals in the area, so as to draw a panorama of the reality found in means of accommodation, as well as raise the awareness of the institutional actors regarding the importance of understanding the strategic environment in which they operate.

Thiol oxidation of hemolymph proteins in oysters Crassostrea brasiliana as markers of oxidative damage induced by urban sewage exposure

Urban sewage is a concerning issue worldwide, threatening both wildlife and human health. The present study investigated protein oxidation in mangrove oysters (Crassostrea brasiliana) exposed to seawater from Balneário Camboriú, an important tourist destination in Brazil that is affected by urban sewage. Oysters were exposed for 24 h to seawater collected close to the Camboriú River (CAM1) or 1 km away (CAM2). Seawater from an aquaculture laboratory was used as a reference. Local sewage input was marked by higher levels of coliforms, nitrogen, and phosphorus in seawater, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), linear alkylbenzenes (LABs), and fecal steroid in sediments at CAM1. Exposure of oysters to CAM1 caused marked bioaccumulation of LABs and decreased PAH and PCB concentrations after exposure to both CAM1 and CAM2. Protein thiol oxidation in gills, digestive gland, and hemolymph was evaluated. Lower levels of reduced protein thiols were detected in hemolymph from CAM1, and actin, segon, and dominin were identified as targets of protein thiol oxidation. Dominin susceptibility to oxidation was confirmed in vitro by exposure to peroxides and hypochlorous acid, and 2 cysteine residues were identified as potential sites of oxidation. Overall, these data indicate that urban sewage contamination in local waters has a toxic potential and that protein thiol oxidation in hemolymph could be a useful biomarker of oxidative stress in bivalves exposed to contaminants. The economy of sustainable tourism

Sustainability, as defined by the Brundtland Commission, which mentions the needs of present and future generations, is a concept that transcends concern with the environment, though this consideration remains important. Sustainability also relates to culture, way of living and economy. Applied to tourist destinations, sustainability offers guidance of great clarity. Tourism brings significant impacts, physical, economic and cultural, with important positive and negative aspects. A study of the subject reveals that the guidelines for sustainable tourism are exactly the guidelines for economic development and healthy living – non-sustainable tourist destinations actually tend to decline and even perish. A qualitative research was conducted in a tourist destination in Brazil, typical in several respects. Such destination has developed after the publication of the Brundtland report did not inherit certain prejudicial attitudes. The results show that the major players involved are not aware of all the challenges posed to a sustainable development, but this can be changed for the better with relative ease and highly positive consequences.

Marine Debris in the Island of Santa Catarina, South Brazil: Spatial Patterns, Composition, and Biological Aspects

The prevalence of marine debris is a worldwide issue, especially in coastal areas. Half of the Brazilian population live within 200 km of the coast and generate large amounts of garbage, which is not always sent to an appropriate destination. This study aims to assess patterns of spatial variability and composition of marine debris in the beaches of Florianópolis, an important tourist destination in Brazil. Biological aspects were also assessed. Five beaches were sampled twice, and abundances of litter ranging from 12.8 to 498 items/100 m2 were found, depending on location and time of sampling. Plastic items accounted for almost 90% of the material collected. Only 5% of the items collected showed biological encrustations, suggesting that most items had a local origin. A weak negative correlation was found between the number of items and the number of ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) open burrows. These results can be used for management purposes and to make comparisons with other coastal cities.
