Tourism Development, Regional Planning, and Poverty Alleviation: Insights from Bukit Lawang and Tangkahan, Langkat Regency

This research aims to analyze the impact of tourism development on regional planning and poverty alleviation in the Bukit Lawang and Tangkahan tourist areas of Langkat Regency. Using a quantitative approach with associative methods, 150 respondents from local communities and regional officials were surveyed. Data were analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SmartPLS software. The results indicate that while tourism development significantly influences regional planning, it does not directly contribute to poverty alleviation. Moreover, regional planning failed to mediate the relationship between tourism development and poverty reduction, likely due to bureaucratic inefficiencies and unequal resource distribution. The study suggests that while tourism holds potential for regional economic growth, its impact on poverty alleviation remains limited. Future research should explore additional variables, such as unemployment and social assistance, to better understand the factors that influence poverty reduction through tourism.

COLLABORATIVE BASED TOURISM GOVERNANCE MODEL IN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

Tourism has great potential to improve the economy, create jobs, and support the development of various regions. However, improper tourism management can cause problems such as environmental degradation, excessive tourism and unequal economic benefits. Therefore, it is essential that collaborative-based tourism management can be effective in developing sustainable tourism. This research aims to identify collaborative-based tourism governance research in tourism development. The output of this research is to provide recommendations for a collaborative-based tourism governance model to impact tourism development in the Tenjolaya sub-district, Bogor Regency. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with 28 informants from the sub-district government and the Tenjolaya tourism awareness group. After the data was collected using data collection techniques through observation, interviews, field notes, analytical memos, and document elicitation, the researcher continued the analysis of the data obtained and then confirmed it using data validity techniques. The research results show that tourism governance in Tenjolaya has implemented collaborative governance even though it is still local, so every indicator still needs to be optimally fulfilled using the good tourism governance model and the public-private partnership model. Thus, tourism governance in Tenjolaya must focus on good tourism collaboration so that tourism goals in Tenjolaya can be achieved based on fulfilling indicators that support good tourism governance, good tourism development and good tourism sustainability.

Evaluation of local people's perceptions, satisfaction, and support for tourism regarding the Şanlıurfa culture route festival

This study aims to determine the participants' perceptions, satisfaction, and support for tourism regarding the Şanlıurfa Culture Route Festival. The participants' perceptions of the festival's social, individual, economic, and touristic benefits significantly influence their satisfaction levels. Among these, perceived economic and personal benefits impact festival satisfaction the most. Furthermore, participants' satisfaction with the festival substantially affects their support for tourism development. Accordingly, the positive perception of the benefits associated with the festival influences satisfaction levels, and high satisfaction levels directly impact tourism development support in the destination. Analysing the averages of the responses given by participants to the scales, it is found that the festival helps alleviate daily stress, contributes to the promotion of the region, provides social interaction opportunities for local people, increases the business volume of local enterprises and that the events organised during the festival are sufficient. Additionally, it has been observed that participants intend to attend the Culture Route Festival again and strongly support tourism development.

Tourism and Urban Development: The case of a coastal village in a small island state

This paper discusses how Marsascala, a coastal town in Malta, has been urbanized over the years, with particular attention to the development of the tourist industry. Young’s (1983) “general model of the process of ‘touristization’ and landscape change” is engaged with to study the impact of tourism development on the locality and local community. Different research methods were used, including qualitative interviews via thematic analysis, fieldwork, orthophoto maps, and analysis of secondary data. Findings show that tourism plays a major role in the local economy. Overdevelopment and population increase (fuelled by tourism and influx of foreign workers) are major challenges in the locality. The former fishing village has as a result reached stage six (intensive tourism consolidation) of Young's model. While more services are available to locals and visitors, the quality of life in the locality is deteriorating. This has raised questions about the need to redevelop the Jerma Hotel which will partly be a real estate project. The authors propose a seventh stage to Young’s model - ‘real estatation’ whereby more areas are taken over by real estate projects including for short-term rentals. The Impact of Tourism Development on Mosuo Marriage and Family

Tourism development has had a significant impact on the contemporary social transformation of the Mosuo people, especially on their marriage and family. Since the rise of tourism in the Lugu Lake area, the Mosuo society has gradually changed from a traditional agriculture-based livelihood to a tourism-based livelihood. The marital radius of the Mosuo people has also extended with the expansion of the scope of interactions. The previous custom of 'walking marriage' has gradually transitioned to the nuclear family model, and the traditional matriarchal extended family has also been slowly reduced to a smaller family size. The division of labor of the family members has been adjusted accordingly. Through the study of the Mosuo marriage and family changes under the tourism industry, not only can we find the path of change of the local traditional culture, but also can make some thoughts on the impact of the current tourism development in ethnic areas.

Is there a conservation relationship between tourism, economic output, and forest areas?

AbstractThis study employed advanced panel data analysis, accounting for cross‐sectional dependence and heterogeneity, to investigate the impact of tourism development and economic output on forest areas in major international tourist markets. The research was guided by forest transformation hypothesis (FTH). The study assessed the validity of FTH, examined the influence of tourism, and identified the income level at which a turning point occurs. The results revealed a heterogeneous impact of tourism on forested areas across major international tourist markets. Specifically, tourism development encouraged afforestation in Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, but led to deforestation in China. In contrast, no significant relationship was observed between the tourism‐forest area nexus in Türkiye and Thailand. Additionally, the study provided evidence supporting FTH in the relationship between economic growth and forested areas in Italy, Spain, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Given these findings, the paper underscores the strong heterogeneity among the individual countries and their tourism, economic development, and forest areas. Consequently, country‐specific sustainable policies are advocated over generic approaches in the fight against deforestation.

Assessment of green sustainable development in plateau lakeside cities

IntroductionGreen sustainable development is an important part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and China’s ecological civilization construction.MethodsThis paper combines the characteristics of the development of lakeside cities, gives full play to the advantages of modern remote sensing technology to collect the indicators related to the green sustainable development of lakeside cities, adopts the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the CRiteria Importance Through Inter-criteria Correlation (CRITIC) subjective and objective weighting methods and the difference coefficient method to determine the weights of the indicators, evaluates the green sustainable development of a typical lakeside city of Kunming for more than 30 years, and analyzes the influencing factors using the gray degree of correlation.ResultsThe results show the following: (1) From 1990 to 2021, the level of green sustainable development in the urban area around Dianchi Lake fluctuated in stages, with an overall upward trend, and the green development index increased from 0.25 in 1990 to 0.5 in 2021. (2) The coefficient of variance determined by the optimization model can be a better compromise between the objective and subjective weights of the indicators, and the massive occupation of wetlands and arable land around the lake in the urban expansion has become a major factor in the development of the city, with a combined weight of 10.30% and 8.79%, respectively. (3) The urban population and economic scale are currently the main drivers of the green and sustainable development of a lakeside city, with a correlation of 0.843 and 0.769, respectively.DiscussionThe growth of urban population and economic scale plays a pivotal role in driving the green and sustainable development of lakeside cities, while the potential impact of tourism development should also be considered.

Analysis of the Impact of Tourism Development on Economic and Socio-Cultural Aspects of Society (Case Study at Bukit Jaddih Tourism Village, Socah District, Bangkalan Regency)

Bukit Jaddih Village, Socah District, Bangkalan Regency, is intensively carrying out tourism development. Development in every process will have impacts, therefore there is a need for research on these impacts in order to avoid, reduce negative impacts and encourage positive impacts. This research process uses descriptive research methods using a qualitative approach. The focus of this research is the implementation of tourism industry development which includes the development of tourist objects and attractions, infrastructure, tourism marketing and promotion, as well as human resource development. The next focus is the impact on the economic and socio-cultural conditions of the community due to tourism development and previous conditions. The results of this research are a positive impact on tourism in Bukit Jaddih village in economic and social aspects, namely the opening of new job opportunities, reduced unemployment rates and the development of existing local arts and culture.

The Impact of Tourism Development on The Environment at AJ3 Playground

The purpose of this research is to find out how the impact of tourism development on the environment. The research was conducted at one of the tourist attractions in Gunungsitoli, namely AJ3 Playground. AJ3 Playground is one of the recreational tourist attractions located in Afia village, North Gunungsitoli sub-district which is in great demand by people from both inside and outside Gunungsitoli. This research is qualitative. Using methods of collecting and evaluating data in context, qualitative research highlights certain social conditions through accurate descriptions of reality. The data collection techniques used were interviews, observations, field notes, and other forms of documentation used to gather information. Furthermore, data reduction, data presentation, and data verification/conclusion were conducted. The results showed that first, the development of tourism is good enough in terms of the 5 A aspects (attractions, activities, accessibility, accommodation, and amenities). Second, facilities and infrastructure have developed. Third, in its development, public awareness is still not optimal.

Methods for Measuring the Impact of Sustainable Tourism Development on Climate and Environment

Climate and environmental change is a growing topic in the post-Covid-1, when tourism growth is recovering. Tourism is a significant polluter of the environment and a rapid response to climate change is needed. Methods for assessing the climate and environmental impact of sustainable tourism development help to measure and communicate the environmental impact of tourism activities, but they are difficult to select and often lack indicators. The aim of the study was to choose methods for assessing the climate and environmental impact of sustainable tourism development in the context of Latvia. The study was based on the analysis of scientific literature, the grouping of methods for assessing the climate and environmental impact of sustainable tourism development according to their functional characteristics i.e. "preventive", "protective", "estimating" and "carbon emission determining" methods. A multi-criteria decision-making method was used for the selection of evaluation methods - Analytical hierarchy process with empirical analysis (AHA) of the obtained weights. By summarising the environmental and climate indicators available for a specific region of Latvia regarding the impact of tourism and experts evaluating the obtained results, the most suitable method for evaluating the impact of tourism development on the climate and environment is the Tourism value chain for low carbon content and efficient use of resources. However, the authors' recommendation for researchers: 1) when evaluating the impact of tourism development on the climate and environment, the choice of method ought to be based on evaluation indicators available for a specific study; 2) in research combinations of sets of "evaluative" and "carbon emission determining” methods should be used.

The Impact and Spatial Spillover Effects of Tourism Development on Urban Welfare: Empirical Evidence from the Yangtze River Delta in China

The ultimate goal of China’s tourism industry is to create a flourishing sector that brings happiness. It is of immense theoretical and practical importance to investigate the impact of tourism development (TD) on urban welfare (UW) and uncover its spatial spillover characteristics from a macro perspective. Utilizing panel data from 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region from 2000 to 2021, this study applies the spatial panel Durbin model to explore the direct and spillover effects of TD on UW. The results show that TD significantly boosts UW in both local and neighboring areas, with the spillover effects taking a dominant position in the total effects. Examining the sub-dimensions of UW, the local welfare effects of TD primarily stem from economic welfare, whereas the spillover effects are characterized by the “three-wheel drive” of economic, social, and environmental welfare. This study can provide practical insights into the coordinated and sustainable development of the regional tourism industry.

Social and Economic Impacts of Tourism Development on the Local Community of Kampung Pelangi, Semarang

The aim of this research is to explore and analyze the social and economic impacts of tourism development in Kampung Pelangi Semarang on the local community. The main research question to be answered in this study is: "How does tourism development in Kampung Pelangi Semarang affect the social and economic aspects of the local community?" This study will utilize a qualitative approach with data collection methods including in-depth interviews with residents of Kampung Pelangi, participant observation, and documentary studies. This is done to gain a deep understanding of the perspectives and experiences of the local community regarding the impacts of tourism development in their area. Local residents have also been able to capitalize on tourist needs by offering various local products and services, such as handicrafts and regional cuisine. Moreover, the increase in tourist numbers has brought about an increase in income for residents of Kampung Pelangi, both directly through the sale of goods and services, and indirectly through the growth of the local economy driven by tourism. Tourism development in Kampung Pelangi Semarang has had impacts on the social and economic lives of the community. New business opportunities, income growth, and changes in livelihoods are key factors driving economic welfare improvement for residents. Lifestyle changes, social interactions, and positive perceptions of tourism reflect the social impacts that have occurred. Efforts are needed to maintain a balance between tourism development and the preservation of local culture.

Tourism Development and Rural Land Transfer-Out: Evidence from China Family Panel Studies

For a long time, the decline in agricultural comparative returns and the urban–rural development gap in China have prompted the outflow of rural labor. Land transfer policies, which allow farmers to retain their land contracting rights while transferring their management rights, were instituted to mitigate the impact of labor outflow on land use and agricultural production. In recent years, tourism has contributed to the diversification of the rural economy and has had an essential impact on the urban–rural allocation of elements such as labor. In this paper, we adopt a probit model to investigate the impact of tourism development on rural land transfer-out by using data from the China Family Panel Studies. The results show that the marginal effect of tourism development is significantly negative, indicating that the probability of rural land transfer-out was significantly reduced with tourism development. The results are still valid after a series of robustness tests. A mechanism analysis indicates that tourism development inhibits land transfer by enhancing local vitality, such as increasing the local employment of rural labor and promoting participation in agricultural production. Moreover, from the perspective of rural welfare and asset prices, further research finds that tourism development contributes to poverty alleviation and increases land value. These results suggest that tourism development inhibits land transfer while promoting rural sustainable development, helping to understand the impact of tourism on rural land use and household asset allocation from a more comprehensive perspective.

Balancing efficiency and fairness: The role of tourism development in economic growth and urban–rural income gap

AbstractSocial fairness and economic recovery stimulation constitute crucial challenges in countries all around the world, and tourism development has enormous potential for balancing efficiency and fairness. Based on the panel data at city level in Yangtze River Delta Region, China, this study uncovered the role that tourism development plays in economic growth and urban–rural income gap by adopting the dynamic SYS‐GMM model. In addition, the moderating effect model was employed to concentrate on the moderating role of urbanization on the relationship between tourism development and economic growth as well as urban–rural income gap. The main conclusions are as follows. First, tourism development does not only promote economic growth, but it also narrows the urban–rural income gap. Second, when it comes to the dynamic effect generated by tourism development, the economic growth‐promotion effect is stronger than the urban–rural income gap‐inhibiting effect. Third, urbanization can enhance the impact of tourism development on economic growth and the reduction of urban–rural income gap.

Dynamic linkages between tourism development, renewable energy and high-quality economic development: Evidence from spatial Durbin model.

There has been a shift in focus toward environmentally and economically sustainable forms of economic growth known as High-quality economic development (HQED). However, this study analyzes the impact of tourism development (TD) and renewable energy consumption on HQED in 30 provinces of China, while covering the time period from 2007 to 2021. TD and HQED has been measured with help of Global Moran Index. This study has used dynamic spatial Durbin model (SDM) to measure the dynamic impact of TD index and renewable energy consumption on HQED along with green finance, foreign direct investment and investment in education. The findings from empirical analysis shows that TD has negative impact on HQED and in more developed regions, the relationship is positive, while in the less developed western part of China, the U-shape has been reversed. Central and northeastern China have a U-shaped connection, while it has been noticed the interaction term of TD and renewable energy endorses HQED. In addition, renewable energy consumption, green finance and increase in education investment have positive and significant impact on HQED while foreign direct investment has negative impact on HQED in China. Therefore, in the light of this study policymakers should focus on the quality of tourism industry, green finance for renewable energy supply and enhancing education investment in China to attain the goal of HQED.

Spatio-temporal characteristics of traditional village landscape pattern and its influencing factors from the perspective of tourism development: a case study of Huangcheng Village, China

ABSTRACT Tourism development promotes economic income and cultural protection of traditional villages, but it also disturbs their landscape pattern and ecosystem. This study is aim to explore the process characteristics and mechanisms of the impact of tourism development on the landscape pattern of traditional villages. Taking Huangcheng Village, a typical tourism-oriented traditional village as a case, this research selects four remote sensing images from 1995 to 2020 according to its key time nodes of tourism development, analyzes its landscape expansion and pattern change, and uses Geodetector to explore influencing factors. The results show that: (1) The landscape change mainly presents the non-natural landscape continuously occupying the natural landscape, and expands continuously around tourist resources in edge-expansion and leapfrog-expansion manner, among which the expansion from 2003 to 2011 is the most significant; (2) The dominance and connectivity of non-natural landscape are enhanced, and the overall landscape pattern experiences a “relatively complete – tending to fragmentation – tending to completeness” change process; (3) The dominant factors affecting landscape pattern have stage characteristics. The results emphasize the role of tourism-related socio-economic and policy factors in influencing landscape pattern, which is significant for the landscape pattern optimization and sustainable development of tourist-type traditional villages.

Туристська індустрія України: проблеми адаптації у військовий період і перспективи поствоєнного відновлення

The aim of the article is to analyze the current state of the domestic tourism industry in the context of the russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as to develop potential directions for eliminating the negative consequences for the tourism industry, speaking of its further recovery. The article examines the state of the tourism industry during the wartime, considers aspects of its adaptation to the conditions of martial law, and develops proposals for the post-war recovery. Since the onset of the large-scale military aggression, the tourism industry of Ukraine has undergone significant transformations, which have led to the practical halt of all types of tourism, especially at the initial stages of hostilities. However, a full assessment of the impact of military events on Ukrainian tourism becomes very difficult in view of the continuation of large-scale hostilities and the lack of accurate data. The study analyzes the amount of tourist tax and the structure of taxes to the State budget of Ukraine from the activities of tourism industry enterprises, the results of the analysis showed a significant drop in all indicators. An assessment of the impact of tourism development on the gross regional product (GRP) is carried out using correlation and regression analysis. Based on the results of modeling, a regression model of the dependence of GRP on tourist tax has been built, which confirms that the development of tourism in the region contributes to an increase in the gross regional product and has a significant multiplier effect. The features of recreation and work of tourist facilities in different regions of Ukraine are generalized and structured, and it is found that even with the existing restrictions, citizens continue to discover new places worth visiting in Ukraine. This can be attributed to the consideration that constant stress tires the body, and people need rest and recovery. A substantive characterization of the wartime factors of influence on the development of the tourism industry has been determined. It is determined that the recovery of the tourism industry will depend on the pace of restoration of the general and tourist infrastructure and the overall standard of living in the country, which will contribute to the rise of both inbound and outbound tourism. One of the main factors influencing the creation of a safe image of a tourist destination is the level of terrorist threat, in connection with which a set of measures to prevent terrorist threats has been formulated. The main program model for the development of tourism in post-war Ukraine is the public-private partnership (PPP), from the implementation of which the greatest return for the development of the tourism business is expected. In view of the above, the subject of prospective research should be the development of organizational and resource support for the PPP mechanism for the recovery of the tourism industry of Ukraine.
