Jasmonic acid and heat stress induce high volatile organic compound emissions in Picea abies from needles, but not from roots.

Plants emit diverse volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from their leaves and roots for protection against biotic and abiotic stress. An important signaling cascade activated by aboveground herbivory is the jasmonic acid (JA) pathway that stimulates the production of VOCs. So far it remains unclear if the activation of this pathway also leads to enhanced VOC emissions from conifer roots, and how the interplay of above- and belowground defenses in plants are affected by multiple stressors. Therefore, we simultaneously analyzed needle and root VOC emissions of Picea abies saplings, as well as CO2 and H2O fluxes in response to aboveground JA treatment, heat stress and their interaction in a controlled climate chamber experiment. Continuous online VOC measurements by PTR-TOF-MS showed an inverse pattern of total needle and root VOC emissions, when plants were treated with JA and heat. While needle sesquiterpene emissions increased nine-fold one day after JA application, total root VOC emissions decreased. This was mainly due to reduced emissions of acetone and monoterpenes by roots. In response to aboveground JA treatment, root total carbon emitted as VOCs decreased from 31% to only 4%. While VOC emissions aboveground increased, net CO2 assimilation strongly declined due to JA treatment, resulting in net respiration during the day. Interestingly, root respiration was not affected by aboveground JA application. Under heat the effect of JA on VOC emissions of needles and roots was less pronounced. The buffering effect of heat on VOC emissions following JA treatment points towards an impaired defense reaction of the plants under multiple stress. Our results indicate efficient resource allocation within the plant to protect threatened tissues by a rather local VOC release. Roots may only be affected indirectly by reduced belowground carbon allocation, but are not involved directly in the JA-induced stress response.

Updating vehicle VOCs emissions characteristics under clean air actions in a tropical city of China

In the context of clean air actions in China, vehicle emission limits have been continuously tightened, which has facilitated the reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. However, the characteristics of VOC emissions from vehicles with strict emission limits are poorly understood. This study investigated the VOC emission characteristics from vehicles under the latest standards based on tunnel measurements, and identified future control strategies for vehicle emissions. The results showed that the highest percentage of VOCs from vehicle consisted of alkanes (80.9 %), followed by aromatics (15.8 %) and alkenes (3.1 %). Alkanes had the most significant ozone formation potential due to their high concentrations, in contrast to the aromatics that have been dominant in previous studies. The measured fleet-average VOC emission factor was 71.3 mg·km−1, including tailpipe emissions of 39.6 mg·km−1 and evaporative emissions of 31.7 mg·km−1. The VOC emission factors of the subgroups were obtained. The emission of evaporated VOCs accounted for 44.5 % of the total vehicle VOC emissions, which have increased substantially from previous studies. In addition, the emission characteristics of vehicles that are under the latest emission threshold values have changed significantly, and the mixing ratio of toluene/benzene (T/B) has been updated to 3:1. This study updates the VOCs emission factors of vehicles under clean air actions and highlights the future mitigation policies should focus on reducing evaporative VOC emissions.

Contribution of cooking emissions to the urban volatile organic compounds in Las Vegas, NV

Abstract. Cooking is a source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which degrade air quality. Cooking VOCs have been investigated in laboratory and indoor studies, but the contribution of cooking to the spatial and temporal variability in urban VOCs is uncertain. In this study, a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) is used to identify and quantify cooking emission in Las Vegas, NV, with supplemental data from Los Angeles, CA, and Boulder, CO. Mobile laboratory data show that long-chain aldehydes, such as octanal and nonanal, are significantly enhanced in restaurant plumes and regionally enhanced in areas of Las Vegas with high restaurant densities. Correlation analyses show that long-chain fatty acids are also associated with cooking emissions and that the relative VOC enhancements observed in regions with dense restaurant activity are very similar to the distribution of VOCs observed in laboratory cooking studies. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) is used to quantify cooking emissions from ground site measurements and to compare the magnitude of cooking with other important urban sources, such as volatile chemical products and fossil fuel emissions. PMF shows that cooking may account for as much as 20 % of the total anthropogenic VOC emissions observed by PTR-ToF-MS. In contrast, emissions estimated from county-level inventories report that cooking accounts for less than 1 % of urban VOCs. Current emissions inventories do not fully account for the emission rates of long-chain aldehydes reported here; thus, further work is likely needed to improve model representations of important aldehyde sources, such as commercial and residential cooking.

Temporal evolution of speciated volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from solvent use sources in the Pearl River Delta Region, China (2006–2019)

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from solvent use sources constitute an important part of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China. While stringent control measures targeting VOCs have been implemented in recent years, an assessment of historical trends is imperative to evaluate their effectiveness. In this study, trends of VOC emissions, compositions, and reactivity from solvent use sources in the PRD region from 2006 to 2019 were estimated using a developed methodology, which considered the improvement of manufacturing equipment and removal efficiency. Results showed that total VOC emissions from solvent use sources displayed an overall increase from 277 kt in 2006 to 400 kt in 2019 despites some fluctuations, with metal products contributing more than 20 % each year. Aromatics and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) accounted for over 70 % of total VOC emissions, increasing by 21 kt and 52 kt respectively. OFP and SOAFP increased by 40 % and 23 % respectively from 2006 to 2019. Specific aromatic species, including m/p-xylene, toluene, 1,2,3,5-tetramethylbenzene, o-xylene and ethylbenzene were identified as key species in both VOC emission amount and reactivity. This study aims to facilitate the understanding of VOC emission evolution from solvent use sources in the region and provide insights into the impact of enacted measures, aiding in the future development of more targeted and efficient strategies in the PRD region.

Characteristics and Formation Mechanism of Ozone Pollution in Demonstration Zone of the Yangtze River Delta, China

Emerging research indicates that ground-level ozone (O3) has become a leading contributor to air quality concerns in many Chinese cities, with the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region facing particular challenges. This study investigated the characterization of air pollutants in Wujiang, which is located within the YRD demonstration zone, during the warm season (April–September) of 2022. The contributions of emission and meteorology to O3 were identified, the O3-NOX-VOC sensitivities were discussed, and the VOC sources and their contributions to O3 formation were analyzed. A random forest model revealed that the high O3 concentration was mainly caused by a combination of increased emission intensity due to the resumption of work and production after the COVID-19 pandemic, along with adverse meteorological conditions. The results revealed more than 92% of the pollution days were related to O3 during the warm season, and the impact of O3 precursor emissions was slightly greater than that of the meteorological conditions. O3 formation was in the VOC-limited regime, and emission reduction strategies targeting VOCs, particularly aromatics such as toluene and xylene, have been identified as the most effective approach for mitigating O3 pollution. Changes in O3-NOX-VOC sensitivity were also observed from the VOC-limited regime to the transitional regime, which was primarily driven by variations in the NOX concentrations. The VOC source analysis results showed that the contributions of gasoline vehicle exhaust and diesel engine exhaust (mobile source emissions) were significantly greater than those of the other sources, accounting for 20.8% and 16.5% of the total VOC emissions, respectively. This study highlights the crucial role of mobile source emission control in mitigating O3 pollution. Furthermore, prioritizing the control of VOC emission sources with minimal NOX contributions is highly recommended within the VOC-limited regime.

Multivariate analysis of carcinogenic equivalence (CEQ) to characterize carcinogenic VOC emissions in a typical petrochemical industrial park in Taiwan

Large industrial emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the petrochemical industry are a critical concern due to their potential carcinogenicity. VOC emissions vary in composition depending on the source and occur in mixtures containing compounds with varying degrees of toxicity. We proposed the use of carcinogenic equivalence (CEQ) and multivariate analysis to identify the major contributors to the carcinogenicity of VOC emissions. This method weights the carcinogenicity of each VOC by using a ratio of its cancer slope factor to that of benzene, providing a carcinogenic equivalence factor (CEF) for each VOC. We strategically selected a petrochemical industrial park in southern Taiwan that embodies the industry's comprehensive nature and serves as a representative example. The CEQs of different emission sources in three years were analyzed and assessed using principal component analysis (PCA) to characterize the major contributing sectors, vendors, sources, and species for the carcinogenicity of VOC emissions. Results showed that while the study site exhibited a 20.7 % (259.8 t) decrease in total VOC emissions in three years, the total CEQ emission only decreased by 4.5 % (15.9 t), highlighting a potential shift in the emitted VOC composition towards more carcinogenic compounds. By calculating CEQ followed by PCA, the important carcinogenic VOC emission sources and key compounds were identified. More importantly, the study compared three approaches: CEQ followed by PCA, PCA followed by CEQ, and PCA only. While the latter two methods prioritized sources based on emission quantities, potentially overlooking less abundant but highly carcinogenic compounds, the CEQ-first approach effectively identified vendors and sources with the most concerning cancer risks. This distinction underscores the importance of selecting the appropriate analysis method based on the desired focus. Our study highlighted how prioritizing CEQ within the analysis framework empowered the development of precise control measures that address the most carcinogenic VOC sources.

High-resolution emission inventory of biogenic volatile organic compounds for rapidly urbanizing areas: A case of Shenzhen megacity, China

The effects of volatile organic compounds on urban air quality and the ozone have been widely acknowledged, and the contributions of relevant biogenic sources are currently receiving rising attentions. However, inventories of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are in fact limited for the environmental management of megacities. In this study, we provided an estimation of BVOC emissions and their spatial characteristics in a typical urbanized area, Shenzhen megacity, China, based on an in-depth vegetation investigation and using remote sensing data. The total BVOC emission in Shenzhen in 2019 was estimated to be 3.84 × 109 g C, of which isoprene contributed to about 24.4%, monoterpenes about 44.4%, sesquiterpenes about 1.9%, and other VOCs (OVOCs) about 29.3%. Metropolitan BVOC emissions exhibited a seasonal pattern with a peak in July and a decline in January. They were mainly derived from the less built-up areas (88.9% of BVOC emissions). Estimated BVOCs comprised around 5.2% of the total municipal VOC emissions in 2019. This percentage may increase as more green spaces emerge and anthropogenic emissions decrease in built-up areas. Furthermore, synergistic effects existed between BVOC emissions and relevant vegetation-based ecosystem services (e.g., air purification, carbon fixation). Greening during urban sprawl should be based on a trade-off between BVOC emissions and ecosystem benefits of urban green spaces. The results suggested that urban greening in Shenzhen, and like other cities as well, need to account for BVOC contributions to ozone. Meanwhile, greening cites should adopt proactive environmental management by using plant species with low BVOC emissions to maintain urban ecosystem services while avoid further degradation to ozone pollution.

Preliminary Study on the Emission Dynamics of TVOC and Formaldehyde in Homes with Eco-Friendly Materials: Beyond Green Building

This preliminary study investigates the emission characteristics of formaldehyde (HCHO) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) in indoor environments, comparing the effects of eco-friendly materials and general materials. The study analyzes the concentration changes over time in the living rooms of experimental units to assess the effectiveness of eco-friendly materials in reducing indoor air pollutants. The results show that eco-friendly materials exhibit lower initial emissions of TVOC than general materials, gradually decreasing over time. Compared to the eco-friendly material unit, the general material unit takes longer to reach acceptable TVOC concentrations. The emission pattern of HCHO differs from TVOC, with the highest peak occurring on the seventh day. Major individual VOCs, except for benzene, exhibit a similar decreasing trend for TVOC over time. Eco-friendly materials demonstrate significant reductions in emissions compared to general materials in various material applications, including parquet flooring, wallpaper, built-in furniture, and kitchen furniture. However, the difference in emissions for door and window frames using eco-friendly materials is minimal. These findings emphasize the effectiveness of eco-friendly materials in reducing indoor air pollutants and provide valuable insights for creating healthier living environments. Further research is needed to optimize the application of eco-friendly materials in specific components and investigate their long-term impact on indoor air quality and occupant health.

Exposure hazards of particles and volatile organic compounds emitted from material extrusion 3D printing: Consolidation of chamber study data

Ultrafine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been detected from material extrusion 3D printing, which is widely used in non-industrial environments. This study consolidates data of 447 particle emission and 58 VOC emission evaluations from a chamber study using a standardized testing method with various 3D printing scenarios. The interquartile ranges of the observed emission rates were 109–1011 #/h for particles and 0.2–1.0 mg/h for total VOC. Print material contributed largely to the variations of particle and total VOC emissions and determined the most abundantly emitted VOCs. Printing conditions and filament specifications, included printer brand, print temperature and speed, build plate heating setup, filament brand, color and composite, also affected emissions and resulted in large variations observed in emission profiles. Multiple regression showed that particle emissions were more impacted by various print conditions than VOC emissions. According to indoor exposure modeling, personal and residential exposure scenarios were more likely to result in high exposure levels, often exceeding recommended exposure limits. Hazardous VOCs commonly emitted from 3D printing included aromatics, aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, esters and siloxanes, among which were various carcinogens, irritants and developmental and reproductive toxins. Therefore, 3D printing emits a complex mixture of ultrafine particles and various hazardous chemicals, exposure to which may exceed recommended exposure limits and potentially induce acute, chronic, or developmental health effects for users depending on exposure scenarios.

Speciated VOCs emissions and ozone formation potential from on-road vehicles in North China Plain based on detailed and localized source profiles

One of China's most heavily ozone (O3) contaminated regions is the North China Plain (NCP). On-road vehicles are major contributors to volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. We established localized speciated VOC emission inventories for 153 sub-sources using detailed and comprehensive source profiles based on local measurements. The survival ratio of the cars was used to perform a more accurate investigation of vehicle populations. The O3 formation potential (OFP) was calculated based on the speciated VOCs emissions, and key reactive species and sources were identified. Total VOC emissions and OFPs from the on-road vehicles in the NCP were 319.49 kt and 1480 kt, respectively. The emissions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatics, halohydrocarbons, and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) were 130.53, 50.60, 14.21, 63.07, 3.42, and 57.67 kt, respectively. Formaldehyde, isopentane, and acetylene dominated emissions. Alkenes contributed the most to the OFPs, accounting for 34.47%, followed by aromatics and OVOCs. Formaldehyde, ethylene, and propene were the most common contributors to the OFPs. The emissions and OFPs varied by city, vehicle type, fuel type, and emission standards. Beijing and Xuzhou had the highest emissions, primarily because of their high vehicle populations, while Beijing and Tianjin had the highest OFPs. In addition, high emissions and OFP were detected in Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, and Henan (JASH) border areas, as well as in cities with developed industries such as Zhengzhou, Baoding, and Shijiazhuang. For both VOCs emissions and OFP, passenger car was the dominant source among the different vehicle types; petrol vehicle was the dominant source among various fuel types; vehicle under China 3 standard was the dominant source among different standards. The primary contributors to VOC emissions were 4-stroke petrol motorcycle (4-stroke < 250 cm3) under China 0 while the major sources to O3 pollution were heavy-duty diesel trucks with rigidities of 40–50 t under China 3 standard.

Effect of wood adhesive modification with liquefied lignocellulosic biomass and nanocellulose on the formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds emissions of particleboards

ABSTRACT Reducing harmful emissions from wooden materials is a major challenge for the wood industry. This is particularly important for the particleboard sector, where the use of formaldehyde-based resins can cause substantial pollutant emissions. With the aim of finding a greener alternative to commercial resins, the authors applied four types of liquefied lignocellulosic biomass and two types of nanocellulose-based formulations as a partial replacement of melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin for single-layer particleboard manufacturing and tested: formaldehyde content, formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions of the boards. The results revealed reduced formaldehyde content (up to −20%) and a slight decrease (max −13%) in formaldehyde emission in comparison to the panel produced with commercial resin when applying liquefied biomass in the adhesive mass. The values of VOC emissions in the particleboards developed with the alternative adhesive systems were substantially lower in comparison to the commercial panel, especially for γ-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane nanocellulose, which allowed to achieve a reduction of about 67% of total VOC emissions. Overall, liquefied wood products obtained from softwood bark showed the best performance in decreasing the emissions. The results confirmed the research hypothesis that the use of liquefied lignocellulosic biomass and nanocellulose can reduce the emissions of harmful substances from the wood-based panels.

Effectiveness of a covered oil-free cooking process on the abatement of air pollutants from cooking meats

Cooking events can generate household air pollutants that deteriorate indoor air quality (IAQ), which poses a threat to human health and well-being. In this study, the emission characteristics and emission factors (EFs) of air pollutants of different meats (beef, lamb, chicken, pork, and fish) cooked by a novel oil-free process and common with-oil processes were investigated. Oil-free cooking tends to emit lower total volatile organic compound (TVOC) levels and fewer submicron smoke particles and can reduce the intake of fat and calories. However, TVOC emissions during oil-free cooking were significantly different, and the lamb EFs were nearly 8 times higher than those during with-oil cooking. The particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (ƩPPAH) and benzo(a)pyrene-equivalent (ƩBaPeq) EFs during with-oil cooking ranged from 76.1 to 140.5 ng/g and 7.7–12.4 ng/g, respectively, while those during oil-free cooking ranged from 41.0 to 176.6 ng/g and 5.4–47.6 ng/g, respectively. The ƩPPAH EFs of chicken, pork, and fish were lower during oil-free cooking than during cooking with oil. Furthermore, the ƩBaPeq EFs of beef, chicken, pork, and fish were lower during oil-free cooking than during cooking with oil. Therefore, it is recommended to use the oil-free method to cook chicken, pork, and fish to reduce ƩPPAH and ƩBaPeq emissions, but not recommended to cook lamb due to the increase of ƩBaPeq emissions. The with-oil uncovered cooking EFs of aldehydes ranged from 3.77 to 22.09 μg/g, and those of oil-free cooking ranged from 4.88 to 19.96 μg/g. The aldehyde EFs were lower during oil-free covered cooking than with-oil uncovered cooking for beef, chicken, and fish. This study provides a better realizing of new cooking approaches for the reduction of cooking-induced emission, but further research on the effects of food composition (moisture and fat) and characteristics is needed.

VOCs emission from a final landfill cover system induced by ground surface air temperature and barometric pressure fluctuation

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission flux and their concentration profiles were measured at a final municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill cover in Hangzhou, China. The influencing parameters, especially ground surface air temperature and pressure were monitored concomitantly. Furthermore, a numerical model incorporating coupled thermo-hydro-chemical interaction to assess VOCs emission from this final landfill cover (LFC) system was developed and validated with the field test results. The tested total VOC emission flux from the final cover is 0.0124 μg/m2/s, which indicates that the total amount of VOCs emitted into the atmosphere is 391 mg/m2 annually. Among these, dichloromethane (DCM) dominated VOCs emission flux during May, comprising 51.8% of the total emission flux. The numerical simulation results indicated that the diffusive emission flux of VOCs varied consistently with the fluctuation of atmospheric temperature. Whereas, the advective flux varied inversely with the fluctuation of barometric pressure. The highest difference in diffusive emission flux induced by temperature variation is 183 μg/m2/day and occurred in spring. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the impact of atmospheric temperature and pressure fluctuation on the emission of VOC from final covers is non-negligible when reasonably assessing the risks of landfill and landfill gas emission budget.

Characterizing VOCs emissions of five packaging and printing enterprises in China and the emission reduction potential of this industry

The packaging and printing industry has become an important source of industrial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions in China, due to the abundant consumption of organic materials. Effective control measures must be developed which rely on a comprehensive understanding of both current emission characteristics and future emission projections. However, representative VOCs source profiles and updated EFs of packaging and printing industry in China are still lacking. In order to fully explore the VOCs emissions characteristics of packaging and printing industry, field measurements including 17 processes in five packaging and printing factories were conducted in this study. The emission factors (EFs), VOCs source profiles, ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosols potential (SOAP) of 110 VOCs species were acquired. Speciated VOCs emission inventory of packaging and printing industry was compiled based on the activity data in 2020. The future reduction perspectives of packaging and printing industry in China were projected. The VOCs EFs of different materials were estimated, including solvent-based ink (287 g/kg), water-based ink (117 g/kg), soybean oil ink (44 g/kg), UV curing ink (22 g/kg), solvent-based adhesive (420 g/kg), and water-based adhesive (139 g/kg). The VOCs EFs of products were 35.58 kg/t for plastic wrapper, 7.28 g/m2 for soft package plastic, 0.083 g/piece for carton, 0.54 g/piece for tin case, and 0.14 g/piece for aluminum can. The total VOCs emissions in Chinese packaging and printing industry was estimated to 634.32 Gg in 2020. Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, Shandong, and Sichuan contributed 73% to total VOCs emissions. Printing workshop was the main contributor to both primary emission and secondary pollutant generation. OVOCs was the most abundant specie in three sub-industries. The key VOCs species in PF were ethylacetate, ethanol, 2-pentanone, methyl ethyl ketone, and i-propanol. I-propanol, ethanol, m-tolualdehyde, and dichloromethane were dominated in PP. Ethanol, m/p-xylene, i-propanol, o-xylene, and acetaldehyde were the key species in MC. The key VOCs species to OFP and SOAP were ethanol, methyl ethyl ketone, 2-pentanone, ethyl methacrylate, acetaldehyde, toluene, and xylene, which should be prioritized. The VOCs emissions would be reduced by 46.5% in 2025 and 66.4% in 2030 with stringent control measures. Increasing the usage proportion of low-VOCs-contained raw material and improving treatment efficiency are the key technologies to reduce the VOCs emissions in the packaging and printing industry.

Experimental Study of the TVOC Distribution in a Car Cabin

The vehicle in-cabin is subject to several types of pollutants infiltrating from the outdoors or emitted directly inside it, such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The concentration of TVOC (total volatile organic compounds) is the result of the emission from different equipment surfaces that compose the car cabin. In the present study, the experimental characterization of TVOC emission from the interior surfaces of a car cabin is discussed by considering the influence of two parameters: the temperature and ventilation modes. A measurement location grid was used to measure TVOC’s emissions from 267 points on all surfaces of the car’s interior equipment. Three different temperatures and two ventilation modes (recirculation and outdoor air) were investigated. The results indicate that the concentration of TVOC increases with the temperature inside the cabin with a contribution that varies with the type of cabin equipment including the dashboard, center console, seats, and carpets. On the other hand, the concentration distributions of TVOC showed relative differences of 10–13% and 2–5% for surface and volumetric measurements, respectively. This implies no preferential positioning of the in-cabin probe for TVOC volumetric concentration measurements. In addition, the recirculation ventilation mode results in a higher accumulation of TVOC; therefore, higher concentrations are measured.

Emission Inventory of Airborne Pollutants from Biomass Combustion in Guizhou Province

With the objective to ascertain the emissions of biomass combustion in Guizhou, the activity levels were measured through data collection and field surveys, and the emission factors were acquired using actual monitoring data and data cited from previous literature. A 3 km×3 km-gridded emission inventory of nine air pollutants from biomass combustion sources in Guizhou Province in 2019 was developed in combination with GIS technology. The results showed that the total emissions of CO, NOx, SO2, NH3, VOCs, PM2.5, PM10, BC, and OC in Guizhou were estimated to be 293505.53, 14781.19, 4146.11, 8501.07, 45025.70, 39463.58, 41879.31, 6832.33, and 15134.74 t, respectively. The distribution of atmospheric pollutants emitted by biomass combustion sources in different cities was noticeably uneven, being mainly concentrated in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. The analysis of variation characteristics of emissions indicated that the monthly emissions were concentrated in February, March, April, and December, and the hourly emissions peaked daily from 14:00 to 15:00. Some uncertainty remained in the emission inventory. It is necessary to perform in-depth analyses of the accuracy of obtaining activity-level data, localize the emission factors through more combustion experiments in subsequent research for improving the emission inventory of air pollutants from biomass combustion in Guizhou Province, and provide a basis for the cooperative governance of the atmospheric environment.

Variation in Leaf Volatile Emissions in Potato (Solanum tuberosum) Cultivars with Different Late Blight Resistance.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play key roles in plant abiotic and biotic stress resistance, but even for widespread crops, there is limited information on variations in the magnitude and composition of constitutive VOC emissions among cultivars with varying stress resistance. The foliage VOC emissions from nine local and commercial potato cultivars (Alouette, Sarme, Kuras, Ando, Anti, Jõgeva Kollane, Teele, 1681-11, and Reet) with medium to late maturities and varying Phytophthora infestans (the causative agent of late blight disease) resistance backgrounds were analyzed to gain an insight into the genetic diversity of constitutive VOC emissions and to test the hypothesis that cultivars more resistant to Phytophthora infestans have greater VOC emissions and different VOC fingerprints. Forty-six VOCs were identified in the emission blends of potato leaves. The majority of the VOCs were sesquiterpenes (50% of the total number of compounds and 0.5-36.9% of the total emissions) and monoterpenes (30.4% of the total number of compounds and 57.8-92.5% of the total VOC emissions). Qualitative differences in leaf volatiles, mainly in sesquiterpenes, were related to the potato genotype background. Among the volatile groups, the monoterpenes α-pinene, β-pinene, Δ3-carene, limonene, and p-cymene, the sesquiterpenes (E)-β-caryophyllene and α-copaene, and green leaf volatile hexanal were the major volatiles in all cultivars. A higher share of VOCs known to have antimicrobial activities was observed. Interestingly, the cultivars were grouped into high and low resistance categories based on the VOC profiles, and the total terpenoid and total constitutive VOC emission scale positively with resistance. To support and expedite advances in breeding for resistance to diseases such as late blight disease, the plant research community must develop a fast and precise approach to measure disease resistance. We conclude that the blend of emitted volatiles is a fast, non-invasive, and promising indicator to identify cultivars resistant to potato late blight disease.

Emissions and uptake of volatiles by sampling components in breath analysis

The first and most crucial step in breath research is adequate sampling, which plays a pivotal role in quality assurance of breath datasets. In particular, the emissions or uptake of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by sampling interface materials present a risk of disrupting breath gas samples. This study investigated emissions and uptake by three interface components, namely a silicon facemask, a reusable 3D-printed mouthpiece adapter, and a pulmonary function test filter compatible with the commercial Respiration Collector for In-Vitro Analysis (ReCIVA) breath sampling device. Emissions were examined before and after (hydro-)thermal treatment of the components, and uptake was assessed by exposing each material to 12 representative breath VOCs comprising alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, terpenes, sulphurous and nitrogenous compounds at different target concentration ranges (∼10 ppbV and ∼100 ppbV). Chemical analyses of VOCs were performed using proton transfer reaction-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (PTR-TOFMS) with supporting analyses via thermal desorption comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-TOFMS (TD-GC×GC-TOFMS). The filter exhibited the lowest overall emissions compared to the mask or adapter, which both had equivalently high emissions (albeit for different compounds). Treatment of the materials reduced the total VOC emissions by 62% in the mask, 89% in the filter and 99% in the adapter. Uptakes of compounds were lowest for the adapter and most pronounced in the mask. In particular, 1-butanol, acetone, 2-butanone, 1,8-cineole and dimethyl sulphide showed negligible uptake across all materials, whereas ethanol, nonanal, acetic acid, butanoic acid, limonene and indole exhibited marked losses. Knowledge of emissions and/or uptake by sampling components is key to reducing the likelihood of erroneous data interpretation, ultimately expediting progress in the field of breath test development.

Demethylation of lignin with mild conditions and preparation of green adhesives to reduce formaldehyde emissions and health risks

Demethylated lignin (DL) was prepared in a NaOH/urea solution at room temperature, and the DL solution was directly substituted for phenol to prepare demethylated lignin phenol formaldehyde (DLPF). The 1H NMR results showed that the benzene ring's -OCH3 content dropped from 0.32 mmol/g to 0.18 mmol/g, whereas the functional group content of the phenolic hydroxyl group increased by 176.67 %, increasing the reactivity of DL. The bonding strength of 1.24 MPa and formaldehyde emission of 0.059 mg/m3 met the Chinese national standard with a 60 % replacement of DL with phenol. The volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of DLPF and PF were simulated, with 25 types of VOCs were found in PF plywood and 14 types found in DLPF plywood. Terpene and aldehyde emissions from DLPF plywood rose, but total VOC emissions were 28.48 % less than those from PF. For carcinogenic risks (CR), both PF and DLPF showed ethylbenzene and naphthalene as carcinogenic VOCs, whereas DLPF had a lower total CR of 6.50 × 10−5. Both plywood had a noncarcinogenic risks of <1, which was within the permissible range to harm humans. In this study, the mild modification conditions of DL benefit its large-scale production, and DLPF effectively reduces the VOCs released from plywood in indoor environments, diminishing the health risks to humans.

Updating emission inventories for vehicular organic gases: Indications from cold-start and temperature effects on advanced technology cars

How would the organic gas emission inventories of future urban vehicles change with new features of advanced technology cars? Here, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs) from a fleet of Chinese light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs) were characterized by chassis dynamometer experiments to grasp the key factors affecting future inventory accuracy. Subsequently, the VOC and IVOC emissions of LDGVs in Beijing, China, from 2020 to 2035, were calculated and the spatial-temporal variations were recognized under a scenario of fleet renewal. With the tightening of emission standards (ESs), cold start contributed a larger fraction of the total unified cycle VOC emissions due to the imbalanced emission reductions between operating conditions. It took 757.47 ± 337.75 km of hot running to equal one cold-start VOC emission for the latest certified vehicles. Therefore, the future tailpipe VOC emissions would be highly dependent on discrete cold start events rather than traffic flows. By contrast, the equivalent distance was shorter and more stable for IVOCs, with an average of 8.69 ± 4.59 km across the ESs, suggesting insufficient controls. Furthermore, there were log-linear relationships between temperatures and cold-start emissions, and the gasoline direct-injection vehicles performed better adaptability under low temperatures. In the updated emission inventories, the VOC emissions were more effectively reduced than the IVOC emissions. The start emissions of VOCs were estimated to be increasingly dominant, especially in wintertime. By winter 2035, the contribution of VOC start emissions could reach 98.98 % in Beijing, while the fraction of IVOC start emissions would decrease to 59.23 %. Spatially allocation showed that the high emission regions of tailpipe organic gases from LDGVs have transferred from road networks to regions of intense human activities. Our results provide new insights into tailpipe organic gas emissions of gasoline vehicles, and can support future emission inventories and refined assessment of air quality and human health risk.
