Effect of traditional roughage-based or limit-fed, high-energy diets on growth performance and digestion in newly received growing cattle and subsequent implications on feedlot growth performance and carcass characteristics

Abstract The objective was to determine effects of ad libitum-fed roughage-based diets or limit-fed high-energy diets on growth performance, behavior, health, and digestion in newly received growing cattle and subsequent implications on feedlot growth performance and carcass characteristics. In Exp. 1, 409 crossbred heifers (initial body weight [BW] = 279 ± 24 kg) in 32 pens were used in a randomized block design. Heifers were fed one of two dietary treatments: a total mixed ration with 0.99 Mcal net energy for gain (NEg)/kg dry matter (DM) fed ad libitum (0.99AL) or 1.32 Mcal NEg/kg DM limit-fed at 85% of intake of heifers fed 0.99AL (1.32LF85%). Both diets contained 40% of DM as a branded wet corn gluten feed. In Exp. 2, 370 crossbred heifers (initial BW = 225 ± 20 kg) were used in a randomized block design and were fed a diet formulated to contain 0.99 Mcal of NEg/kg DM for ad libitum intake or a diet formulated to contain 1.32 Mcal of NEg/kg DM and fed at 2.2% of BW daily (DM basis; 1.32LF2.2). For Exp. 1 and 2, treatment integrity was maintained through the finishing phase where cattle were fed a common diet. Cattle were sorted by BW into heavy and light groups prior to finishing, with light cattle fed longer than heavy cattle to reach similar harvest BW. In Exp. 3, 8 ruminally-cannulated heifers (average BW = 305 ± 23 kg) were used in a 2-period cross-over design and fed treatments from Exp. 1 to assess digestibility and ruminal fermentation characteristics. Gain:feed was 47% and 35% greater (P < 0.01) in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, for limit-fed heifers compared with 0.99AL heifers. Rumination time was greater (P < 0.01) for 0.99AL compared with limit-fed treatments in Exp. 1 and 2. Activity was greater (P < 0.01) for 1.32LF2.2 than for 0.99AL in Exp. 2. In Exp. 1, more (P = 0.03) carcasses from light sort heifers than carcasses from heavy sort heifers had livers with large, active abscesses. In Exp. 2, finishing-phase morbidity was greater (P < 0.01) for 1.32LF2.2 than for 0.99AL. Light-sort groups had fewer (P < 0.01) edible livers than heavy-sort groups, suggesting that greater number of days on feed may increases the risk of liver abscess prevalence and condemnation. In Exp. 3, apparent total-tract DM and organic matter digestibilities were greater (P < 0.01) for 1.32LF85% than for 0.99AL. Overall, dietary treatments during the growing phase had little carryover effect on feedlot growth performance, carcass characteristics, or liver abscesses prevalence at harvest.

Effects of the palmitic to oleic ratio in the form of calcium salts of fatty acids on the production and digestibility in high-yielding dairy cows

The form of fat supplements, degree of saturation, and the fatty acid (FA) profile influence the cows' production response. The objective was to determine the effects of supplemental fats in the form of calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA) with different ratios between palmitic (PA) and oleic (OA) acids on nutrient digestibility and cow performance. Forty-two dairy cows were assigned to 3 groups and fed (for 13 wk) rations that contained 2.2% CSFA (on a dry matter basis) with increasing the PA-to-OA ratio as follows: 1) CS45:35 - 45% PA and 35% OA, 2) CS60:30 - 60% PA and 30% OA, and 3) CS70:20 - 70% PA and 20% OA. Rumen and fecal samples were taken for volatile fatty acids (VFA) and digestibility measurements, respectively. Increasing the PA-to-OA ratio linearly decreased the milk and energy-corrected milk (ECM) yields, whereas a quadratic effect was observed for milk fat concentration (3.55, 3.94, and 3.87% in the CS45:35, CS60:30, and CS70:20 groups, respectively) and fat yield. Dry matter intake (DMI) was highest in the CS60:30 group (33.7 kg/d), and lowest in the CS70:20 group (31.6 kg/d), and a tendency of quadratic effect was observed for calculated energy balance with no difference in body weight gain among the groups. The milk-to-DMI ratio was decreased, and the ratio of ECM-to-DMI tended to decrease when the PA-to-OA ratio increased. The highest apparent total-tract digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, and protein were observed in the CS60:30 cows, and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) tended to decrease with increasing the PA-to-OA ratio; however, digestibility of the total FA and FA subgroups (16 and 18-carbon FA) were not different among groups. Across treatments, the 18-carbon FA digestibility was higher than the 16-carbon FA digestibility. Under the current study conditions, the CS60:30 cows had the highest fat concentration and fat yield, energy output in milk, DMI, and digestibility of DM, OM, and protein. However, further research is required to fine-tune the optimal FA ratio in supplemental fat sources to maximize production and efficiency under various conditions, such as production level, stage of lactation, and diet composition.

Effectiveness of near-infrared spectroscopy to predict the chemical composition of feces and total-tract apparent nutrients digestibility estimated with uNDF or AIA in lactating buffaloes' feces.

Following a comparison of nutrient total-tract digestibility estimates in lactating buffaloes using single-point undigestible NDF (uNDF) or acid-insoluble ash (AIA) as internal markers, the potential of fecal near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to provide calibration equations for the assessment of the chemical composition of feces and nutrient total-tract digestibility estimated with internal markers was explored. Chemical analyses were performed on 147 fecal samples from lactating buffaloes reared in 5 farms in central Italy (Naples). Each farm fed a silage-based total mixed ration (TMR) to the buffaloes, which was sampled in the 2 d before the fecal collection. The TMR and individual fecal samples were collected and analyzed for dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ash, AIA, ether extract (EE), starch, fiber fractions (aNDFom, aNDF, ADFom, ADF, hemicellulose, cellulose, ADL, uNDF), N, CP and CP bound to aNDF (NDICP) and to ADF (ADICP). The uNDF content was determined through a 240-h in vitro fermentation and employed, together with AIA as markers to estimate the total-tract apparent digestibility (ttaDe) and total-tract digestibility (ttDe) of DM, OM, ash, N, CP, EE, aNDFom, aNDF, NDIP, ADFom and ADF, ADIN, ADL, hemicellulose, cellulose, starch, non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) and fraction B3 of N. No correlation was found between DM and OM digestibility estimated with AIA and uNDF as internal markers. Weak correlations were detected for all the other nutients digestibilities while strong correlations were observed for EE, ADFom, HC, NDIN, ADIN, NB3, NFC and starch.Inizio modulo The sample set (n = 147) was divided in a calibration set (n = 111) and a validation set (n = 36) to "train" and "validate" the fecal NIRS curve through an external validation process. An estimation usable for preliminary or initial evaluation was obtained for N, CP and aNDF fecal content. An excellent prediction was obtained for ttADINDe (R2 = 0.90) when estimated with uNDF as internal marker. The NIRS technology was not able to accurately predict all the other traits and the estimated nutrient digestibility of lactating buffalo diets from fecal spectra.

Effects of saturated fatty acids with lysophospholipids on production and nutrient digestibility in lactating cows

The objective of the experiment was to determine the effects of supplemental saturated fatty acid (SFA) sources, lysophospholipids (LPL), and their interaction on production and nutrient digestibility in lactating dairy cows. The experiment was conducted with 48 cows in a randomized complete block design. Cows were blocked (total 12 blocks) by parity and days in milk and randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments in each block (2 × 2 factorial arrangement), i.e., 2 sources of fat supplements, C16:0 (palmitic acid, PA)- or C18:0 (stearic acid, SA)-enriched fat, with or without LPL. The experiment was conducted for 6 wk to measure daily dry matter intake and milk yield and weekly milk composition. During the last week of the experiment, spot fecal and urine samples were collected to determine total-tract nutrient digestibility. Milk samples in the last week were also collected to analyze for milk fatty acid (FA) profile. All data were analyzed using the mixed procedure of SAS where block was used as a random effect and FA, LPL, and the interaction of FA by LPL were used as fixed effects. Week and interactions of week by FA or LPL were included for production measures. Different sources of SFA did not affect dry matter intake and milk yield. However, PA increased (39.7 vs. 36.8 kg) energy-corrected milk compared with SA due to increased milk fat yield. No effect of LPL on production measures was observed. Total-tract digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and total FA were not different between PA and SA, but PA increased (41.4 vs. 38.8%) neutral detergent fiber digestibility compared with SA. Supplementation of LPL increased (64.7 vs. 60.5%) total FA digestibility, especially 18-carbon FA (74.1 vs. 68.2%). An interaction of SFA by LPL was found for 16-carbon FA digestibility. The PA diet increased the concentration of 16-carbon FA in milk fat and SA increased the concentration of preformed FA (≥18 carbons). Supplementation of LPL decreased the concentration of trans-10 C18:1. No difference in N utilization and excretion among treatments was observed. In conclusion, PA was more effective in improving milk fat yield of lactating cows compared with SA. Supplementation of LPL increased digestibility of total FA, especially 18-carbon FA but did not affect production.

Carbohydrates and protein digestive traits in beef cattle grazing fertilised or mixed tropical pasture

ABSTRACT This study was performed to investigate the nitrogen (N) and carbohydrate digestive traits of grazing heifers. The experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Lavras. The treatments were a Marandu palisadegrass (Urochloa brizantha [Syn, Brachiaria brizantha] Stapf. A. Rich. cv. Marandu) monoculture fertilised with 150 kg N/[ha ∙ year] (FP) or Marandu palisadegrass mixed pasture with forage peanut (MP). The pastures were grazed by six rumen-cannulated zebu heifers. A double cross-over design was used in four periods. Nutritive value, intake and apparent digestibility of forage, ruminal traits and kinetics and N balance were evaluated. Apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) were greater for FP than for MP. There was no effect in apparent total-tract digestibility of N. The estimated intestinal digestibility of nutrients was greater on MP than FP. Even though N intake and faecal N output were greater on MP than FP, there was no effect in urine N output. The N balance tended to be greater on MP than FP. The forage peanut, which contains condensed tannins, decreased ruminal fibre degradation, apparent digestibility and ruminal protein degradation, increased N flow from the rumen. Inclusion of forage peanut in the mixed pasture decreased the ruminal fibre degradability but increased N retention by the animals.

How neonatal diet affects the long-term development of rumination behavior, rumen fermentation and feed digestion in dairy calves fed a high milk level?

This study was to investigate growth performance, rumination development, rumen fermentation and feed digestion in young calves provided high volumes (about 20% of calf birth weight) of milk with or without forage inclusion and how these parameters correlate with each other. Immediately after birth, 160 newborn Holstein female calves (41.6 ± 4.2 kg of initial BW) were randomly divided into 2 treatments: 1) starter (CON, only starter) and 2) starter and hay (HAY, both starter and hay). The calves were fed their respective experimental diets from d 4 to 84, after which they were all introduced to similar diets until the end of the experiment on d 196. Treatment had no effect on growth and structural measurements throughout the experimental period. However, treatment had an effect on the other parameters, mainly during the post-weaning period. Forage supplementation tended to reduce starter dry matter intake (P = 0.05), while increasing the forage intake (P < 0.01) and the feed-to-gain ratio (P < 0.01). HAY calves had increased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and physically effective NDF (peNDF) intakes (P < 0.05) and tended to lower (P < 0.01) starch intake compared to CON calves. The HAY calves had a higher rumination time (P < 0.01), ruminal pH (P < 0.01), and acetate-to-propionate ratio (P = 0.05) compared to the CON calves. Spearman correlation analysis showed that rumination time was positively related to the ruminal pH at d 84 (P = 0.01) and 196 (P = 0.02). The HAY calves had similar apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter (DM), NDF and ether extract (EE), but lower digestibility of organic matter (OM, P = 0.03), crude protein (CP, P < 0.01) and starch (P < 0.01) compared to those of the CON calves at week 12. Furthermore, there were no positive relationships between rumination time and nutrient digestibility or between rumination time per kilogram DM and nutrient digestibility. In conclusion, feeding hay to calves fed a high milk level improved rumination during the post-weaning period only, without a concomitant effect on growth performance throughout the experimental period, suggesting no detrimental effect of feeding forage in calves fed high milk level.

224 Effects of Feeding Hybrid Rye Grain as a Replacement for Barley Grain on Feed Intake, Ruminal Fermentation, and Site of Nutrient Digestion for Finishing Beef Cattle

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of increasing hybrid rye as a replacement for barley grain on feed intake, ruminal fermentation, and site of nutrient digestion in finishing cattle. Eight ruminally and duodenally cannulated Hereford-cross heifers (starting body weight = 514 ± 25.3 kg) were used in a replicated 4×4 Latin square design with 21-d periods including 15 d of dietary adaptation and 6 d of sample collection. Dietary treatments included a control diet with 10.0% hay, 85.2% barley grain, and 4.8% of a vitamin and mineral supplement on a dry matter (DM) basis. Hybrid rye grain replaced 33, 67, or 100% of the barley grain. Both cereal grains were dry rolled to 80% processing index. Feed, refusals, ruminal fluid, duodenal digesta, and fecal samples were collected. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS 9.4 (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC). Increasing hybrid rye inclusion tended (P = 0.052) to linearly decrease DM intake. Additionally, increasing hybrid rye grain linearly decreased mean and minimum ruminal pH (P &amp;lt; 0.01) and increased the duration (P &amp;lt; 0.01) and area (P = 0.01) that pH was less than 5.5. There was no effect of hybrid rye inclusion on total short chain fatty acid, lactic acid concentrations, or osmolality. Likewise, the molar proportion of acetate and butyrate were not affected by hybrid rye inclusion. Propionate tended to linearly increase with increasing hybrid rye inclusion (P = 0.08). Increasing hybrid rye linearly increased NH3-N concentration (P = 0.03). Ruminal organic matter (OM) digestibility tended to linearly increase (P = 0.08) and ash-free neutral detergent fiber (aNDFom) digestibility linearly increased (P &amp;lt; 0.01) when increasing hybrid rye. There was no effect on ruminal starch digestibility (71.1 ± 5.12%). Intestinal digestibility of CP linearly decreased (P = 0.050), but there were no effects for other nutrients. Increasing hybrid rye linearly increased apparent total-tract DM, OM, and aNDFom digestibility (P &amp;lt; 0.05) but did not affect starch digestibility (97.4 ± 0.42%). Increasing the inclusion rate of hybrid rye grain at the expense of barley grain in finishing diets may decrease DMI and increase risk for ruminal acidosis; however, hybrid rye inclusion did not influence the site or extent of starch digestion and increased total tract digestibility of DM, OM, and aNDFom.

Feeding alfalfa-grass or red clover–grass mixture baleage: Effect on milk yield and composition, ruminal fermentation and microbiota taxa relative abundance, and nutrient utilization in dairy cows

Our goal was to investigate the effect of diets containing baleages harvested from alfalfa-grass or red clover-grass mixture on production performance, ruminal fermentation and microbiota taxa relative abundance, milk fatty acid profile, and nutrient utilization in dairy cows. Twenty Jersey cows (18 multiparous and 2 primiparous) averaging (mean ± SD) 148 ± 45.2 days in milk and 483 ± 65.4 kg of body weight in the beginning of the study were used in a randomized complete block design with repeated measures over time. The experiment lasted 9 wk, with a 2 wk covariate period followed by 7 wk of data and sample collection (wk 4 and 7 used in the statistical analyses). Cows were fed diets containing (dry matter basis) 35% of a concentrate mash and the following forage sources: (1) 65% second- and third-cut (32.5% each) alfalfa-grass mixture baleages (ALF) or (2) 65% second- and third-cut (32.5% each) red clover-grass mixture baleages (RC). Diets did not affect dry matter intake, milk yield, and concentrations of milk fat and true protein. In contrast, milk fat yield tended to decrease and energy-corrected milk yield decreased with feeding RC versus ALF. The apparent total-tract digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, and ash-free neutral detergent fiber, milk proportions of trans-10 18:1, cis-9,cis-12,cis-15 18:3, and total n-3 fatty acids, ruminal molar proportion of acetate, and plasma concentrations of Leu, Phe, and Val all increased in RC versus ALF. Diet × week interactions were found for several parameters, most notably ruminal molar proportions of propionate and butyrate, ruminal NH3-N, milk urea N, plasma urea N, and plasma His concentrations, urinary N excretion, enteric CH4 production, and all energy efficiency variables. Specifically, ruminal NH3-N and plasma urea N concentrations, urinary excretion of N, and CH4 production decreased in cows fed RC in wk 4 but not in wk 7. Milk urea N concentration decreased and that of plasma His increased with feeding RC during wk 4 and 7, although the magnitude of treatments difference varied between the sampling periods. Efficiency of energy utilization calculated as milk energy/metabolizable energy decreased and that of tissue energy/ME increased in RC versus ALF cows in wk 4, suggesting that ME was portioned toward tissue and not milk in the RC diet. Interactions were also observed for the relative abundance of the rumen bacterial phyla Verrucomicrobiota and Fibrobacterota, with cows offered RC showing greater values than those receiving ALF in wk 4 but no differences in wk 7. Several diet × week interactions were detected in the present study implying short-term treatment responses and warranting further investigations.

Quality and safety of hemp meal as a protein supplement for nonlactating dairy cows

Hemp seed meal may be a suitable protein supplement for dairy cows, but its quality and safety as a dairy cow feed has not yet been fully investigated. As a result, dry matter intake (DMI), rumen fermentation, blood metabolites, total-tract digestibility, and concentrations of cannabinoids in blood plasma, urine, muscle, and adipose tissues were compared among nonlactating Holstein dairy cows receiving a basal partial mixed ration that was supplemented with either 10.2% dry matter (DM) hemp meal (HM treatment), 13.5% DM canola meal (CM treatment), or 6.25% DM hemp meal and 6.16% DM canola meal (HC treatment). Diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous. Six nonlactating, nonpregnant Holstein cows were used in a repeated 3 × 3 Latin square design trial with three 3-wk experimental periods. The first 2 weeks of each served as adaptation. Sample and data collection occurred during the third week of each period. Neither the partial mixed ration nor canola meal contain cannabidiol (CBD), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), d9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (THCA-A). However, the hemp meal contained 3.0, 4.4, 0, and 0.1 μg/g DM of CBD, CBDA, THC, and THCA-A, respectively. Treatment did not affect DMI, pH, concentrations of volatile fatty acids or ammonia in the rumen, total-tract digestibilities of DM and crude protein, or blood plasma concentrations of glucose, urea, β-hydroxybutyrate, and nonesterified fatty acids. Hence, based on these metabolites, treatment did not affect the nutritional status of the cows. However, the total-tract neutral detergent fiber digestibility of the CM treatment (43%) was higher than that of the HM treatment (38%). No cannabinoids were detected in blood plasma, rumen fluid, and urine. Cannabinoids were also not detected in kidney, liver, urine, muscle, or adipose tissues at the end of the experiment when cows had undergone all treatments. Feces from all treatments did not contain detectable concentrations of THC or THCA-A, but feces of cows on the HC treatment contained 0.42 and 0.40 μg/g DM of CBD and CBDA, respectively. Feces of cows on the HM treatment contained 0.68 and 0.67 μg/g DM of CBD and CBDA, respectively. This indicated that most ingested CBD and CBDA were not absorbed but instead were excreted in the feces. Our data show dietary inclusion rates of up to 10.2% of DM. We find that hemp meal is a high-quality and safe protein supplement for nonlactating dairy cows.

Extrusion of lupines with or without addition of reducing sugars: Effects on the formation of Maillard reaction compounds, partition of nitrogen and Nε-carboxymethyl-lysine, and performance of dairy cows

The extrusion of leguminous seeds induces the formation of Maillard reaction compounds (MRC) as a product of protein advanced glycation and oxidation, which lowers protein degradability in the rumen. However, the quantitative relationship between the parameters of pretreatment (i.e., addition of reducing sugars) and extrusion, and the formation of MRC has not been established yet. Moreover, the fate of the main stable MRC, Nε-carboxymethyl-lysine (CML), in the excretory routes has never been investigated in ruminants. We aimed to test the effects of the temperature of extrusion of white lupines with or without addition of reducing sugars on the formation of MRC, crude protein (CP) degradability in the rumen, N use efficiency for milk production (milk N/N intake), and performance of dairy cows. Two experiments with a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design were conducted simultaneously with 16 (3 rumen-cannulated) multiparous Holstein cows to measure indicators of ruminal CP degradability (ruminal NH3 concentration, branched-chain volatile fatty acids), metabolizable protein supply (plasma essential AA concentration), N use efficiency (N isotopic discrimination), and dairy performance. In parallel, apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, neutral detergent fibers, N, total Lys and CML, and partition of N and CML were measured with 4 cows in both experiments. The diets consisted on a DM basis of 20% raw or extruded lupines and 80% basal mixed ration of corn silage, silage and hay from permanent grasslands, pelleted concentrate, and a vitaminized mineral mix. Expected output temperatures of lupine extrusion were 115°C, 135°C, and 150°C, without and with the addition of reducing sugars before extrusion. The extrusion numerically reduced the in vitro ruminal CP degradability of the lupines, and consequently increased the predicted supply of CP to the small intestine. Nitrogen balance and urinary N excretion did not differ among dietary treatments in either experiment. Milk yield and N use efficiency for milk production increased with extrusion of lupines at 150°C without addition of reducing sugars compared with raw lupines. Nitrogen isotopic discrimination between dietary and animal proteins (the difference between δ15N in plasma and δ15N in the diet) were lower with lupines extruded at 150°C without and with addition of reducing sugars. Regardless of sugar addition, milk true protein yield was not affected, but milk urea concentration and fat:protein ratio were lower with lupines extruded at 150°C than with raw lupines. In the CML partition study, we observed that on average 26% of the apparently digested CML was excreted in urine, and a much lower proportion (0.63% on average) of the apparently digested CML was secreted in milk, with no differences among dietary treatments. In conclusion, we showed that the extrusion of white lupines without or with addition of reducing sugars numerically reduced enzymatic CP degradability, with limited effects on N partition, but increased milk yield and N use efficiency at the highest temperature of extrusion without addition of reducing sugars.

Comparing dehulled hemp meal and canola meal as a protein supplement for lactating dairy cows

Effects of replacing canola meal with dehulled hemp meal in the diet of lactating dairy cows on the dry matter intake (DMI), milk production, milk fatty acid profile, blood metabolites, total-tract nutrient digestibility, and transfer of cannabinoids were determined in 12 lactating, nonpregnant Holstein cows. These cows were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square design with three 3-wk experimental periods consisting of 2 wk of adaptation and 1 wk of sampling. Cows received basal partial mixed rations supplemented with either 15% dry matter (DM) canola meal (CM15), 15% DM dehulled hemp meal (HM15), or 7.5% DM dehulled hemp meal and 7.5% DM canola meal (CM7.5HM7.5). Diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous, but the HM15 and CM7.5HM7.5 diets contained, on average 1.2 percentage units more crude protein (CP) that the CM15 diet. The CP of the dehulled hemp meal contained less soluble protein than that of canola meal. Hence, the intake of soluble protein did not differ among diets. Canola meal contained less crude fat than hemp seed meal (3.46% vs. 8.25% DM). The lipid fraction of canola meal fat contained more oleic acid (C18:1 cis-9; 47.3 vs. 14.9 g/100 g of fatty acids, FA) and vaccenic acid (18:1 cis-11; 13.7 vs. 1.2 g/100 g of FA) and less linoleic acid (C18:2n-6; 21.9 vs. 55.7 g/100 g of FA) and α linolenic acid (C18:3n-3; 3.2 vs. 8.9 g/100 g of FA) than the lipid fraction of hemp seed meal. The hemp seed meal contained 4.9 µg/g cannabidiol, 5.1 µg/g cannabidiolic acid, and 0.1 µg/g tertahydroxycannabinolic acid A. Treatments did not differ in DMI, yields of milk, milk protein and milk fat, total-tract neutral detergent fiber digestibility, and blood plasma concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate and nonesterified FA. Apparent total-tract DM digestibility was lowest in the HM15 treatment, whereas the CP digestibility and the concentrations of urea in blood, urine, and milk were lowest in the CM15 treatment. Cannabinoids were not detected in urine, milk, and blood plasma. Replacing canola meal with hemp seed meal increased milk fat contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which were 3.42, 3.90, and 4.25 g/100 g of FA for the CM15, CM7.5HM7.5, and HM15 treatments, respectively. Especially, the milk fat contents of 18:2n-6 (1.99 vs. 1.56 g/100 g FA) and 18:3n-3 (0.31 vs. 0.43 g/100 g FA) were increased by hemp meal feeding. Especially, the milk fat contents of 18:2n-6 (1.99 vs. 1.56 g/100 g FA) and 18:3n-3 (0.31 vs. 0.43 g/100 g FA) were increased by hemp meal feeding. Our data show that hemp seed meal is a suitable and safe replacement for canola meal as a feed for lactating dairy cows and that this replacement increases CP digestibility and urea in urine, milk, and blood plasma, as well the PUFA content of milk fat.

Lactation performance, milk fat output, and nutrient digestibility responses to the addition of liquid molasses or yeast culture in dairy cows fed super-conditioned corn

Increased diet fermentability may decrease ruminal pH and fiber digestibility, and increase the flow of trans fatty acids (FA) to the lower tract ultimately leading to milk fat depression. We recently showed that feeding super-conditioned corn, a new method of corn processing (95°C for 6 min in super-conditioner) for ruminants has potential to the reduction in milk fat yield caused by changes in ruminal pH and increased trans FA in milk fat. Supplementing yeast culture (YC) and replacing starch with sugar sources in diet can counteract the negative effects of high fermentable diets by improving ruminal pH and milk fat output. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding beet liquid molasses (LM) and YC on intake and total-tract digestibility of nutrients, milk yield and composition, ruminal fermentation, milk FA profile, and plasma concentrations of glucose, nonesterified FA, β-hydroxybutyric acid, and urea N in early-lactation dairy cows fed high-starch diets containing super-conditioned corn. Twelve primiparous and 18 multiparous Holstein cows (mean ± SD; 67 ± 12 d in milk and 42 ± 2.1 kg of milk at the beginning of the experiment) were blocked by parity, pre-experimental milk yield, and DIM. Cows were used in a randomized complete block design experiment with 14 d as covariate period and 37 d for the experimental period. The following dietary treatments were fed as total mixed rations: (1) control diet (CTRL = no YC or LM supplementation), (2) LM supplementation at 5% of the diet dry matter (MOL diet), and (3) CTRL supplemented with 10 g/d of YC (YST diet). Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isoenergetic. Intake of nutrients and apparent total-tract digestibility of crude protein and starch did not change across treatments. In contrast, cows fed the YST diet had the greatest apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter, organic matter and neutral detergent fiber. Compared with the CTRL diet, yield of 4% FCM increased by 2.4 and 1.8 kg in cows fed MOL or YST, respectively. The ruminal molar proportions of acetate and butyrate increased in cows fed the YST or MOL diets, respectively, but the proportion of ruminal propionate was not affected by treatments. Milk fat concentration increased by supplementing both LM and YC and the milk yield of total trans-18:1 dropped by 45% and 18% relative to CTRL with MOL or YST diets, respectively. While the MOL diet increased the milk proportion and yield of de novo FA, no treatment effects were observed for the proportion and yield of preformed FA in the milk fat. Apart from β-hydroxybutyric acid concentration in plasma, which was greatest in cows fed MOL, remaining blood metabolites were not affected by treatments. Overall, MOL and YST diets increased 4% FCM and milk fat concentration and reduced the proportion of total trans-18:1 FA in milk fat in cows fed a concentrate based on super-conditioned corn. These responses were associated with increased ruminal pH and the molar proportions of acetate and butyrate with feeding the MOL and YST diets.

The form more than the fatty acid profile of fat supplements influences digestibility but not necessarily the production performance of dairy cows

The form of a lipid supplement, its degree of saturation, and its fatty acid (FA) profile greatly influence digestibility and cow productive response. The objective in this study was to examine the effect of fat supplements that differ in their form or FA profile on nutrient digestibility and cow performance. Forty-two mid-lactation cows (128 ± 53 d) were assigned to 3 treatment groups according to milk yield, days in milk, and body weight. For 13 wk, the cows were fed rations that contained (on a dry matter basis) (1) 2.4% of calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA) consisting of 45% palmitic acid (PA) and 35% oleic acid (OA; CS45:35); (2) 2.4% of CSFA consisting of 80% PA and 10% OA (CS80:10); or (3) 2.0% of free FA consisting of 80% PA and 10% OA (FF80:10). Rumen samples were taken to measure the ammonia and volatile FA concentrations, and fecal samples were taken to measure the digestibility. Preplanned comparisons were CS45:35 versus CS80:10 to assess 2 CSFA supplements with different FA profiles, and CS80:10 versus FF80:10 to assess similar FA profiles in different forms. Compared with CS45:35, CS80:10 decreased the milk yields, increased the fat percentage, and tended to increase the energy-corrected milk (ECM) yields. The fat percentage of milk was highest in the FF80:10 cows (4.02%), intermediate in the CS80:10 cows (3.89%), and lowest in the CS45:35 cows (3.75%). Compared with CS80:10, FF80:10 increased milk yields (50.1 vs. 49.4 kg/d, respectively), tended to increase fat percentage, and increased 4% fat-corrected milk (4% FCM; 49.1 vs. 47.7 kg/d, respectively) and ECM yields (49.5 vs. 48.2 kg/d, respectively). Treatment had no effect on dry matter intake (DMI), and compared with CS80:10 cows, the calculated energy balance was lower in the FF80:10 cows. The 4% FCM/DMI and ECM/DMI ratios were higher in the FF80:10 group compared with the CS80:10 group. Compared with the CS80:10 cows, the FF80:10 cows had a lower rumen pH, higher propionate, lower acetate/propionate ratio, and higher total VFA. Compared with CS45:35 cows, the apparent total-tract digestibilities of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber were higher in CS80:10 cows; whereas, the apparent total-tract digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, protein, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber were higher in the CS80:10 cows compared with the FF80:10 cows. Compared with the CS80:10 group, the apparent digestibility of total FA was 13.0 percentage points lower in the FF80:10 cows (79.1 vs. 66.1%, respectively), and similarly, the digestibilities of 16-carbon and 18-carbon FA were lower in the FF80:10 cows than in the CS80:10 cows. In conclusion, the form, more than the FA profile of fat supplements, influenced digestibility. Further, the CSFA supplements were more digestible than the free fatty acids, regardless of the FA profile. However, energy partitioning toward production appeared to be higher in the FF80:10 cows, although the digestibility of nutrients was lower than in the CSFA product with a similar FA profile.

Effects of dietary lysine levels on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, serum metabolites, and carcase and meat quality of Yacha pigs

The objective was to evaluate the effect of different standardised ileal digestible lysine (SID-Lys) levels on performance, nutrient digestibility, serum metabolites, and carcase and meat traits of Yacha pigs. A total of 50 pigs were blocked by body weight and randomly assigned to five dietary treatments with six replicate pens (2 pigs/pen) per treatment using a randomised complete block design. Five diets in mash form were formulated to contain SID-Lys at 0.57%, 0.62%, 0.67%, 0.72%, 0.77% of diet in phase 1 (15 ∼ 30 kg), at 0.40%, 0.48%, 0.56%, 0.64%, 0.72% of diet in phase 2 (30 ∼ 50 kg), and at 0.30%, 0.39%, 0.48%, 0.57%, 0.66% of diet in phase 3 (50 ∼ 90 kg), respectively. The results showed that the average daily gain and gain to feed ratio increased with increasing dietary Lys levels in phases 1 and 2 (p ≤ 0.05). Increasing dietary Lys levels increased linearly (p ≤ 0.05) apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter, gross energy, crude protein, and phosphorus in Phase 3 and also increased (p ≤ 0.05) concentration of serum glucose and tended to increase (p < 0.10) serum total protein in Phase 2. Compared with the Lys deficiently treatment, the adequate Lys treatment had increased carcase weight, lean meat percentage, and shear force and decreased cooking loss (p ≤ 0.05). Moreover, the optimal dietary SID-Lys levels preliminarily determined for 15 ∼ 30 kg, 30 ∼ 50 kg, and 50 ∼ 90 kg Yacha pigs were 0.760%, 0.628%, and 0.553% of the diet, respectively. HIGHLIGHTS Dietary appropriate SID-Lys levels can improve performance and feed utilisation in Yacha pigs. Dietary appropriate SID-Lys levels contributed to enhancing carcase lean meat yield of Yacha pigs.

Energy concentrations and nutrient digestibility of high-fiber ingredients for pigs based on in vitro and in vivo assays

The objective of the present study was to determine energy concentrations and nutrient digestibility of high-fiber ingredients for pigs using in vitro and in vivo assays. In experiment 1, in vitro ileal and total tract disappearance of nutrients in soybean hulls, corn gluten feed, wheat bran, rice bran, and cashew nut testa were determined. Two-step and 3-step in vitro procedures were used to simulate the digestion of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract of pigs. The coefficient of in vitro ileal disappearance of dry matter (DM) in rice bran was the greatest (P < 0.05) among the test ingredients followed by wheat bran, corn gluten feed, cashew nut testa, and soybean hulls. The coefficient of in vitro total tract disappearance of DM and organic matter in rice bran was also the greatest (P < 0.05) among the test ingredients followed by wheat bran, cashew nut testa, corn gluten feed, and soybean hulls. In experiment 2, in vivo energy values and nutrient digestibility of the same ingredients used in experiment 1 were determined. Twelve barrows with an initial body weight of 57.5 kg (standard deviation = 5.7) were assigned to 6 experimental diets in a replicated 6 × 4 incomplete Latin square design. A basal diet consisted of 750 g/kg corn and 227 g/kg soybean meal (SBM) as the sole energy sources. Four experimental diets were prepared by replacing 400 g/kg of corn and SBM with soybean hulls, corn gluten feed, wheat bran, or rice bran. An additional diet was prepared by replacing 100 g/kg of corn and SBM with cashew nut testa. Each period consisted of a 4-day adaptation period and a 4-day collection period. On an as-fed basis, digestible energy and metabolizable energy concentrations in soybean hulls (2198 and 2242 kcal/kg), corn gluten feed (2317 and 2227 kcal/kg), and wheat bran (2751 and 2679 kcal/kg) were less (P < 0.05) than those in rice bran (3503 and 3459 kcal/kg), but those were greater (P < 0.05) than those in cashew nut testa (352 and 519 kcal/kg). The coefficient of apparent total tract digestibility of DM in wheat bran was greater (P < 0.05) than that in corn gluten feed and cashew nut testa. In conclusion, energy values and nutrient digestibility in rice bran were the greatest among the high-fiber ingredients, whereas cashew nut testa had the lowest values based on the present in vitro and in vivo experiments. In vitro procedures can be a potential alternative method for determining energy digestibility of ingredients for pigs.

Effects of guanidinoacetic acid supplementation on lactation performance, nutrient digestion and rumen fermentation in Holstein dairy cows.

Considering the high energy demand of lactation and the potential of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) addition on the increase in creatine supply for cows, the present study investigated the effects of 0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9g kg-1 dry matter (DM) of GAA supplementation on lactation performance, nutrient digestion and ruminal fermentation in dairy cows. The study used 40 mid-lactation multiparous Holstein cows and the study duration was 100 days. DM intake was not affected, but milk and milk component yields and feed efficiency increased linearly with increasing GAA addition. The total-tract digestibility of DM, organic matter, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and non-fibre carbohydrates increased linearly and that of crude protein increased quadratically with increasing GAA addition. When the addition level of GAA increased, ruminal pH, molar percentages of butyrate, isobutyrate and isovalerate and the acetate-to-propionate ratio decreased linearly, and the total volatile fatty acids concentration and propionate molar percentage also increased linearly, whereas the acetate molar percentage and ammonia-N concentration were unaltered. The activities of fibrolytic enzymes, α-amylase and protease increased linearly. The populations of total bacteria, fungi, Ruminococcus albus, Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, Ruminobacter amylophilus and Prevotella ruminicola increased linearly, whereas protozoa and methanogens decreased linearly with increasing GAA addition. As for the blood metabolites, concentrations of glucose, urea nitrogen and methionine were unchanged, total protein, albumin, creatine and homocysteine increased linearly, and folate decreased linearly with increasing GAA supply. The results of the present study indicate that supplementation of GAA improved milk performance and rumen fermentation in lactating dairy cows. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The Effects of High-Fat Diets from Calcium Salts of Palm Oil on Milk Yields, Rumen Environment, and Digestibility of High-Yielding Dairy Cows Fed Low-Forage Diet.

The present results show that including up to 3.9% of CS-PFA in lactating cow rations with low fiber content did not affect milk and fat yields, decreased protein percentages and yields, reduced rumen fermentation, and decreased the total-tract apparent digestibility of NDF. In spite of the negative effects on rumen fermentation and digestibility, the adverse effects on yields were minor, which indicates that, under specific circumstances, feeding high-fat diets containing large amounts of CS-PFA to dairy cows fed low-fiber diets is possible.Instability in grain prices led to continuing worldwide growth in the proportion of fat supplements in lactating cows’ rations. However, fat supplementation was associated with decreases in feed intake, rumen fermentation, and feed digestibility. The present objectives were to test the effects of high-fat diets from calcium salts of palm oil fatty acids (CS-PFA) in lactating cow rations containing high proportions of concentrate, on feed intake, milk yields, rumen environment, and digestibility. Forty-two multiparous mid-lactation dairy cows were assigned to three treatments, designated as low fat (LF), moderate fat (MF), and high fat (HF) that contained (on DM basis), respectively, (i) 4.7% total fat with 1.7% CS-PFA, (ii) 5.8% total fat with 2.8% CS-PFA, and (iii) 6.8% total fat with 3.9% CS-PFA. Rumen samples were collected for pH, ammonia, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) measurements, and fecal grab samples were collected for digestibility measurements. A numerical trend of decreasing dry matter intake with increasing CS-PFA in diet was observed: 28.7, 28.5, and 28.1 kg/day in LF, MF, and HF, respectively (p < 0.20). No differences between treatments were observed in milk yields and milk-fat percentages, but protein percentage in milk tended to fall with increasing dietary CS-PFA content (p < 0.08), which resulted in 6.4% smaller protein yields in the HF than in the LF group (p < 0.01). Milk urea nitrogen was 15.3% higher in HF than in LF cows (p < 0.05). Rumen pH was higher at all sampling times in the MF and HF than in the LF cows. Concentrations of propionic acid and total VFA were higher in LF than in MF and HF cows. The apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter was higher with LF than with HF (p < 0.002), and that of organic matter was lowest with the HF diet (p < 0.005). The apparent NDF digestibility declined with increasing dietary fat content, and it was 8.5 percentage points lower in HF than in LF cows (p < 0.009). Apparent fat digestibility increased with increasing dietary fat content, and it was higher by 10.4 percentage points in the HF than in the LF group (p < 0.004). In conclusion, diets with high concentrate-to-forage ratios, containing up to 6.8% total fat and 3.9% CS-PFA, negatively affected rumen fermentation and NDF digestibility in high-yielding dairy cows; however, the effects on yields were minor, indicating that, under specific circumstances, the inclusion of large amounts of CS-PFA in dairy cows’ rations with low fiber content is feasible.

Rumen protected riboflavin and rumen protected pantothenate improved growth performance, nutrient digestion and rumen fermentation in Angus bulls

The study evaluated the effects of rumen protected riboflavin (RPRF) and rumen protected pantothenate (RPPA) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation and blood metabolites in bulls. Forty Angus bulls were blocked by body weight and randomly assigned to four treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design, with factors being 0 or 60 mg riboflavin/kg DM from RPRF and 0 or 35 mg pantothenate/kg DM from RPPA. The experimental period was 80 days, with 20 days for adaptation and 60 days for sample collection. Average daily gain increased and feed conversion ratio decreased, and the changes were greater for supplementing RPPA in diets with RPRF than in diets without RPRF. The populations of total protozoa and Ruminococcus albus increased, but the increases were smaller for supplementing RPPA in diets with RPRF than in diets without RPRF. The total-tract digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and neutral detergent fibre increased with RPRF or RPPA addition. The digestibility of acid detergent fibre increased with RPPA addition, and digestibility of non-fibre carbohydrate increased with RPRF addition. The rumen pH and ammonia-N concentration decreased, but total volatile fatty acids concentration and acetate to propionate ratio increased with RPRF or RPPA supplementation. The activities of xylanase and pectinase and populations of total bacteria, R. flavefaciens and Prevotella ruminicola increased with RPRF or RPPA supplementation. The populations of total fungi and Fibrobacter succinogenes increased with RPRF addition, and the activities of α-amylase and protease increased with RPPA addition. The data suggested that RPRF or/and RPPA supply improved growth performance of bulls, and the effect seemed to be due mostly to the vitamins released in the rumen.

Prebiotics and β-Glucan as gut modifier feed additives in modulation of growth performance, protein utilization status and dry matter and lactose digestibility in weanling pigs

There are growing interests in developing novel gut modifier feed additives and alternative therapeutics to replace antimicrobials to enhance efficiency of nutrient utilization and to address the antimicrobial resistance threat to public health facing the global pork production. Biological mechanisms of supplementing lactose for enhancing weanling pig growth and nitrogen utilization are unclear. Thus, this study was prompted to determine effects of dietary supplementation of 3 prebiotics and oat β-glucan vs. a sub-therapeutic antibiotic on growth performance, whole-body protein utilization status, the apparent total tract dry matter (DM) and lactose digestibility in weanling pigs fed corn and soybean meal (SBM)-based diets. Six experimental diets were formulated with corn (40%), SBM (28%) and supplemented with dried whey powder (20%) and fish meal (9%) with titanium oxide (0.30%) as the digestibility marker. Diet 1 (NC, negative control), as the basal diet, contained no antibiotics and no supplemental prebiotics or β-glucan. Diet 2 (PC, positive control), contained an antibiotic premix (Lincomix-44 at 0.10%) in the basal diet at the expense of cornstarch. Diets 3, 5 and 6 contained 0.75% of the three test prebiotics of retrograded cornstarch (Diet 3), Fibersol-2 (Diet 5, a modified digestion-resistant maltodextrin) and inulin (Diet 6), and the viscous soluble fiber oat β-glucan (Diet 4), respectively, at the expense of cornstarch. A total of 144 Yorkshire pigs, at the age of 21 days (d) and an average body weight (BW) of 5.5 kg, were allocated to 12 floor pens with 3 barrows and 3 gilts per pen, and fed one of the 6 diets for 21 d in 2 study blocks according to a completely randomized block design. Initial and final pig BW, average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), representative pig plasma urea concentration as well as the apparent total tract DM and lactose digestibility during d 8-15 were measured. Analyses of variances, Dunnett’s and Tukey’s tests were conducted on the endpoints by using the SAS mixed model. There were no differences (P&amp;gt; 0.05) in ADG, ADFI, feed to gain ratio, plasma urea concentration, the apparent total tract apparent DM and lactose digestibility and the predicted whole-gut lactase digestive capacity among the diets, as examined by the Tukey’s test. There were no differences (P&amp;gt; 0.05) in these endpoints between each of the four treatment diets and the NC or the PC diet as examined by the Dunnett’s test. The total tract lactose digestibility was determined to be at 100%. The predicted whole-gut lactase digestive capacity was about eight times of the daily lactose intake when dietary lactose contents were supplemented at 10 - 12% (as-fed basis). In conclusion, dietary supplementation (at 0.75%) of the prebiotics and the oat β-glucan did not significantly affect the major growth performance endpoints, whole-body protein utilization status as well as the apparent total tract DM and lactose digestibility in the weanling pigs fed the corn and SBM-based diets. The promoting effect for growth and nitrogen utilization associated with dietary supplementation of lactose is due to the fact that lactose is a completely and rapidly digestible sugar rather than acting as an effective prebiotic in weanling pig nutrition.

Effects of supplementation with lysophospholipids on performance, nutrient digestibility, and bacterial communities of beef cattle.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the influences of supplemental lysophospholipids (LPL) on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and fecal bacterial profile, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) of beef cattle. Thirty-six Angus beef cattle [565 ± 10.25 kg body weight (BW)] were grouped by BW and age, and randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatment groups: (1) control (CON, basal diet); (2) LLPL [CON supplemented with 0.5 g/kg LPL, dry matter (DM) basis]; and (3) HLPL (CON supplemented with 0.75 g/kg, DM basis). The Angus cattle were fed a total mixed ration that consisted of 25% roughage and 75% concentrate (dry matter [DM] basis). The results reveal that LPL inclusion linearly increased the average daily gain (P = 0.02) and the feed efficiency (ADG/feed intake, P = 0.02), while quadratically increasing the final weight (P = 0.02) of the beef cattle. Compared with CON, the total tract digestibilities of DM (P < 0.01), ether extract (P = 0.04) and crude protein (P < 0.01) were increased with LPL supplementation. At the phylum-level, the relative abundance of Firmicutes (P = 0.05) and ratio of Firmicutes: Bacteroidetes (P = 0.04) were linearly increased, while the relative abundances of Bacteroidetes (P = 0.04) and Proteobacteria (P < 0.01) were linearly decreased with increasing LPL inclusion. At the genus-level, the relative abundances of Clostridium (P < 0.01) and Roseburia (P < 0.01) were quadratically increased, and the relative abundances of Ruminococcus was linearly increased (P < 0.01) with LPL supplementation. Additionally, increasing the dose of LPL in diets linearly increased the molar proportion of butyrate (P < 0.01) and total SCFAs (P = 0.01) concentrations. A conclusion was drawn that, as a promising feed additive, LPL promoted growth performance and nutrient digestibility, which may be associated with the change of fecal microbiome and SCFAs.
