Associations of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and kidney stones in U.S. general population: results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2016.

It has been reported that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure was associated with the increasing risk of various diseases. Utilizing the data from the general population of the U.S., we tried to assess the association between PAHs exposure and KS. The dataset was extracted from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2016. The hydroxylated metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) were detected as representative of urinary PAHs. Ranking-based PAHs score was used to evaluate the total PAHs exposure burden. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between PAHs exposure and KS after adjusting a series of confounding factors. 8975 eligible participants were included. In multivariable logistic regression analyses, after adjusting confounding variables, 2-hydroxynaphthalene (OR 1.38, 1.16-1.65; p = 0.038) and 9-hydroxyfluorene (OR 1.39, 1.06-1.84, p = 0.019) were still observed to have significant positive correlations with the prevalence of KS, respectively. The incidence of KS increased significantly with the increase of total PAHs burden (p for trend = 0.011). Significant interaction effects were observed in the subgroup of gender (p for interaction < 0.05). Among female participants, PAHs exposure was more significantly correlated with KS. Higher 2-hydroxynaphthalene (OR 1.94, 1.39-2.70; p < 0.001), 1-hydroxyphenanthrene (OR 1.57, 1.07-2.30; p = 0.022) and 2-hydroxyphenanthrene (OR 1.85, 1.11-3.06; p = 0.018) were significantly associated with the increased incidence of KS in women. There is a significant association between a high level of PAHs exposure and increased prevalence of KS. In particular, in the female population, the relationship between PAHs exposure and KS is especially significant.

Fingerprinting characterization of sedimentary PAHs and black carbon in the East China Sea using carbon and hydrogen isotopes

In this study, we present the application of a dual-isotope approach for the source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and black carbon (BC) in the East China Sea (ECS). The δ13C and δ2H isotope signatures of the PAHs were determined from surface sediments collected from the ECS. A Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) model was used to the environmental source identifications with dual-isotope PAHs data. The results indicate that the coal combustion source is predominant (with average of 41%) in the ECS. Liquid fossil fuels combustion, biomass combustion, and petrogenic sources account for 23%, 20%, and 12% of the total PAH burden, respectively. Additionally, we also determine the stable and radio carbon isotopes (δ13C and Δ14C) of total BC in sediment samples of the ECS. The results demonstrate the quantitative source apportionments for different sources, reflecting the contributions of fossil fuels (coal combustion and petroleum-related emissions), biomass (C3 and C4 plants) combustion, and rock-weathering sources. The fossil combustion in BC accounts for 67%, with 23% for biomass sources, meanwhile the rock weathering source in BC is an average of 10%. These results show a remarkable similarity and extensive homologies at source apportionment of PAHs and BC in the ECS, even though some differences in source mechanisms and processes. These findings on the environmental source apportionment will provide a reference for improved emission inventories, and will help to provide guidance for the efforts to mitigate environmental pollution in the coastal areas and marginal sea.

Potential sources and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in street dusts of Karaj urban area, northern Iran.

In the present study chemical fingerprinting approach (isomeric ratios), a receptor-oriented model (principal component analysis with multiple linear regression, PCA/MLR) and a probabilistic health risk framework were employed to characterization, source appointment and carcinogenic risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in street dusts of Karaj urban area (northern Iran). Thirty street dusts samples were collected from the different functional areas in the city of Karaj and analyzed for PAHs by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GS/MS). The results obtained showed that ∑16PAHs concentrations varied widely from 16.2 to 1236.2 with a mean of 624μg/kg and decreased in the following order of functional areas; traffic> residential > green/park areas. PAHs profile in the majority of dust samples were dominated by 5-6 rings PAHs, accounting for 25%-95% of the total PAHs. Qualitative source apportionment using the molecular isomeric ratios indicated mixed sources of PAHs in street dusts while PCA/MLR receptor model quantitatively identified three major sources with following relative contributions to the total dust PAH burden; 51% for pyrogenic-traffic sources, 32% for traffic-stationary sources and, 16% for petrogenic sources. The results of health risk assessment based on probabilistic model indicated that at the 95% percentiles, total cancer risks for children and adults are 8.43 × 10-4 and 3.34 × 10-5, respectively which both are higher than the acceptable baseline (10-6) indicating potential carcinogenic risk for local residents. It was also revealed that dust ingestion pathway is the most important contributor to the total carcinogenic risks of PAHs for both children and adults although the cancer risk level for adults through dermal and inhalation was 10 times greater than that for children. Based on the sensitivity analysis using the Monte Carlo simulation, benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration, exposure duration, dermal exposure area and ingestion rate were found to be the most sensitive exposure parameters which could introduce uncertainties into the cancer risk estimated.

Source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in continental shelf of the East China Sea with dual compound-specific isotopes (δ13C and δ2H)

In this study, we firstly report the application of a dual-isotope approach for the source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the East China Sea (ECS). The δ13C and δ2H isotope signatures of the PAHs were determined in the surface sediments collected from the ECS. This study on the source apportionment of environmental PAHs will provide a reference for improvingemission inventories of the PAHs, and also give guidance for the efforts to extenuate PAH pollutions in the marginal sea.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in agricultural soils from Northwest Fujian, Southeast China: Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and toxicity evaluation

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in agricultural soils play an important role in aspects of environment safety and human health. Sixteen US-EPA priority PAHs in 78 surface agricultural soils from Nanping and Sanming, Northwest Fujian were detected to elucidate their contamination levels, spatial distribution, sources, and toxicities. The total concentrations of PAHs were 12.90–2271.03ng/g, with an average of 223.85±324.33ng/g. North and Central Nanping and Central Sanming were found to be most contaminated regions in Northwest Fujian. The spatial distribution of PAHs positively correlated with the population density in the study area. Three- and four-ring PAHs were dominant components, accounting for 45% and 34% of the total PAHs, respectively. Four sources were identified by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Their contributions to the total PAHs burden were 50%, 31%, 16%, and 3% for biomass combustion, coal burning, vehicle emission, and coking, respectively. Spatial distribution of sources indicated that higher amounts of biomass-originated PAHs mainly occurred in Sanming, while higher contributions of PAHs originated from coal burning and vehicular emission were mostly found in Nanping. The mean benzo(a)pyrene equivalent (BaPeq) values were 14.95ng/g for seven carcinogenic PAHs (Σ7cPAH), and 15.20ng/g for 16 PAHs, respectively, suggesting that Σ7cPAH were the major toxic contributors to the total PAHs. Source apportionment of PAH toxicities based on PMF-BaPeq method showed that biomass, coal burning, vehicle emission, and coking source contributed 3%, 41%, 55%, and 1% to Σ16BaPeq values, respectively. Traffic source, associated with higher carcinogenic PAHs burden, posed the highest toxicity among all sources despite its low proportion of the total PAHs.

Source Apportionment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Central European Soils with Compound-Specific Triple Isotopes (δ(13)C, Δ(14)C, and δ(2)H).

This paper reports the first study applying a triple-isotope approach for source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The (13)C/(12)C, (14)C/(12)C, and (2)H/(1)H isotope ratios of PAHs were determined in forest soils from mountainous areas of the Czech Republic, European Union. Statistical modeling applying a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) framework to the environmental triple isotope PAH data and an end-member PAH isotope database allowed comprehensive accounting of uncertainties and quantitative constraints on the PAH sources among biomass combustion, liquid fossil fuel combustion, and coal combustion at low and high temperatures. The results suggest that PAHs in this central European region had a clear predominance of coal combustion sources (75 ± 6%; uncertainties represent 1 SD), mainly coal pyrolysis at low temperature (∼650 °C; 61 ± 8%). Combustion of liquid fossil fuels and biomass represented 16 ± 3 and 9 ± 3% of the total PAH burden (∑PAH14), respectively. Although some soils were located close to potential PAH point sources, the source distribution was within a narrow range throughout the region. These observation-based top-down constraints on sources of environmental PAHs provide a reference for both improved bottom-up emission inventories and guidance for efforts to mitigate PAH emissions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils from urban to rural areas in Nanjing: Concentration, source, spatial distribution, and potential human health risk

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have become a major type of pollutant in urban areas and their degree of pollution and characteristics of spatial distribution differ between various regions. We conducted a comprehensive study about the concentration, source, spatial distribution, and health risk of 16 PAHs from urban to rural soils in Nanjing. The mean total concentrations of 16 PAHs (∑16PAHs) were 3330ngg−1 for urban soils, 1680ngg−1 for suburban soils, and 1060ngg−1 for rural soils. Five sources in urban, suburban, and rural areas of Nanjing were identified by positive matrix factorization. Their relative contributions of sources to the total soil PAH burden in descending order was coal combustion, vehicle emissions, biomass burning, coke tar, and oil in urban areas; in suburban areas the main sources of soil PAHs were gasoline engine and diesel engine, whereas in rural areas the main sources were creosote and biomass burning. The spatial distribution of soil PAH concentrations shows that old urban districts and commercial centers were the most contaminated of all areas in Nanjing. The distribution pattern of heavier PAHs was in accordance with ∑16PAHs, whereas lighter PAHs show some special characteristics. Health risk assessment based on toxic equivalency factors of benzo[a]pyrene indicated a low concentration of PAHs in most areas in Nanjing, but some sensitive sites should draw considerable attention. We conclude that urbanization has accelerated the accumulation of soil PAHs and increased the environmental risk for urban residents.

Source Apportionment and Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Surface Sediments from Upper Reach of Huaihe River, China

Fifteen priority PAHs in 16 sediments from upper reach of Huaihe River collected in 2007 were measured. Source apportionment derived from PCA/MLR indicated that the highest contribution to ΣPAHs was from biomass burning (34.1%), followed by coal combustion (29.7%), vehicular emission (25.8%), and coke oven origin (10.4%). Risk assessment for each identified source was quantitatively calculated by combining the benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (BaPE) with estimated source contribution. The results showed that coal combustion posed the highest toxic risk, with BaPE value of 13.1 ng g−1 dw, and the BaPE values for biomass burning, vehicular emission and coke oven were 5.6 ng g−1 dw, 7.8 ng g−1 dw, and 4.1 ng g−1 dw, respectively. The distributions of contribution for total PAHs burden and BaPE of each identified source showed similar pattern among different sampling sites.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban soils of the megacity Shanghai: Occurrence, source apportionment and potential human health risk

A comprehensive investigation was conducted to the urban soil in the megacity Shanghai in order to assess the levels of PAHs and potential risks to human health, to identify and quantitatively assess source contributions to the soil PAHs. A total of 57 soil samples collected in main urban areas of Shanghai, China were analyzed for 26 PAHs including highly carcinogenic dibenzopyrene isomers. The total concentrations ranged from 133 to 8650ngg−1 for Σ26PAHs and 83.3 to 7220ngg−1 for Σ16PAHs, with mean values of 2420 and 1970ngg−1, respectively. DBalP and DBaeP may serve as markers for diesel vehicle emission, while DBahP is a probable marker of coke tar as distinct from diesel emissions. Six sources in Shanghai urban area were identified by PMF model; their relative contributions to the total soil PAH burden were 6% for petrogenic sources, 21% for coal combustion, 13% for biomass burning, 16% for creosote, 23% for coke tar related sources and 21% for vehicular emissions, respectively. The benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (BaPeq) concentrations ranged from 48.9–2580ngg−1 for Σ24PAHs, 7.02–869ngg−1 for Σ16PAHs and 35.7–1990ngg−1 for Σ4DBPs. The BaPeq concentrations of Σ4DBPs made up 72% of Σ24PAHs. Nearly half of the soil samples showed concentrations above the safe BaPeq value of 600ngg−1. Exposure to these soils through direct contact probably poses a significant risk to human health from carcinogenic effects of soil PAHs. The index of additive cancer risk (IACR) values in almost one third of urban soil samples were more than the safe value of 1.0, indicating these urban soil PAHs in the study area may pose a potential threat to potable groundwater water quality from leaching of carcinogenic PAH mixtures from soil.

Promoting the use of BaP as a marker for PAH exposure in UK soils

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants that frequently accumulate in soils. There is therefore a requirement to determine their levels in contaminated environments for the purposes of determining impacts on human health. PAHs are a suite of individual chemicals, and there is an ongoing debate as to the most appropriate method for assessing the risk to humans from them. Two methods predominate: the surrogate marker approach and the toxic equivalency factor. The former assumes that all chemicals in a mixture have an equivalent toxicity. The toxic equivalency approach estimates the potency of individual chemicals relative to the usually most toxic Benzo(a)pyrene. The surrogate marker approach is believed to overestimate risk and the toxic equivalency factor to underestimate risk. When analysing the risks from soils, the surrogate marker approach is preferred due to its simplicity, but there are concerns because of the potential diversity of the PAH profile across the range of impacted soils. Using two independent data sets containing soils from 274 sites across a diverse range of locations, statistical analysis was undertaken to determine the differences in the composition of carcinogenic PAH between site locations, for example, rural versus industrial. Following principal components analysis, distinct population differences were not seen between site locations in spite of large differences in the total PAH burden between individual sites. Using all data, highly significant correlations were seen between BaP and other carcinogenic PAH with the majority of r (2) values > 0.8. Correlations with the European Food Standards Agency (EFSA) summed groups, that is, EFSA2, EFSA4 and EFSA8 had even higher correlations (r (2) > 0.95). We therefore conclude that BaP is a suitable surrogate marker to represent mixtures of PAH in soil during risk assessments.

Application of silicone rubber passive samplers to investigate the bioaccumulation of PAHs by Nereis virens from marine sediments

The availability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from marine sediments to the ragworm ( Nereis virens) was studied. Concentrations of PAHs in pore waters were determined using silicone rubber passive samplers. Calculated bioconcentration factors confirmed that partitioning of PAHs between the lipid phase of the polychaetes and pore water is a passive process. Low biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAF) calculated using total sediment concentration suggested a fraction of the total PAH burden in the sediment may be strongly sorbed to organic carbon and not available to the polychaete. Organic carbon normalised concentrations of the potentially exchangeable fractions of contaminants and freely dissolved concentrations (measured using silicone rubber samplers) provide a better description of the observed bioaccumulation by the ragworms. These data indicate that the concept of availability should be included in environmental risk assessments based upon equilibrium partitioning models, and that silicone rubber samplers can provide the necessary information for these models.

Sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments of the Biobio River in south central Chile

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous in the environment; there are concerns about them due to their toxic properties. Human activities could significantly contribute to the total PAH burden in river sediments. In this work, we document the analysis of PAHs in sediments taken in the middle stretch of the Biobio River in south central Chile. This river is a principal system, draining more than 24,000 km2 and subjected to a diverse variety of human-made stressors (pulp mill and urban effluents, agricultural drainage systems, etc). During 2003, several sediment samples were taken in more than 45 sampling sites located in the river’s middle stretch. Due to the granulometric characteristics (mainly sandy sediments), only 17 samples were analyzed, taking into consideration the presence of a fine section within the sediment sample. Using HPLC with fluorescence detection, 15 EPA priority PAHs and perylene were analyzed. The composition of PAHs in the sediment samples is rather similar between sites and levels averaged 104 ± 78 ng g−1 d.w. The highest levels were detected downstream from an industrial discharge. A good correlation was observed between PAH levels and organic carbon content in the tested sediments; however, concentrations above 134 ng g−1 d.w. did not indicate correlation. The samples PAH ratios (Flu/Pyr and Chr/B(a)A) reveal a strong pyrolytic PAH pattern in the sediments tested, supporting evidence indicating that PAHs come mainly from pyrolytic sources. This result contrasts with previous records that have shown a natural influence in the upper basin and a petrogenic pattern near the mouth.

Assessment of atmospheric PAHs profile through Calotropis gigantea R.Br. leaves in the vicinity of an Indian coal-fired power plant

Biomonitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the leaves of Calotropis gigantea R.Br. were performed at seven sites in the surrounding areas of a Thermal Power Plant (TPP), using the gas chromatography and mass spectrometry technique. The primary objective of the study was to monitor the degree of PAHs load in the nearby sites around TPP compared to distant sites. Total PAH (SigmaPAH) concentrations in the leaves ranged from 372.18 (at control site 7) to 4362.35 ng g(-1) d.w. (at highest polluted site 4). The concentration factors ranged from 2.65 to 11.72 for the sites located at 1 km to the point source and 1.0 to 7.08 for distant sites. The share of carcinogenic PAHs to the total PAHs differed with the site, ranging from 10.76% to 26.92%. The sites located closer to TPP have shown higher concentrations of medium and high molecular weight PAHs, which decreased gradually with the distance from the source. The total PAH burden at control site was dominated by the low and medium molecular weight PAHs compounds viz., naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, coronene., whilst at other sites medium and high PAHs viz., fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo (a) anthracene, chrysene, benzo (b) fluoranthene, benzo (e) pyrene and coronene showed the highest values. These results support the biomonitoring ability of Calotropis gigantea R.Br. leaves to monitor PAHs contamination.

Contribution of Biomass Burning to Atmospheric Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons at Three European Background Sites

Radiocarbon analysis of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from three background areas in Sweden, Croatia, and Greece was performed to apportion their origin between fossil and biomass combustion. Diagnostic ratios of PAHs implied that wood and coal combustion was relatively more important in the northern European site, while combustion of fossil fuels was the dominant source of PAHs to the two central-southern European background sites. The radiocarbon content (delta14C) of atmospheric PAHs in Sweden ranged between -388 per thousand and -381 per thousand, while more depleted values were observed for Greece (-914 per thousand) and Croatia (-888 per thousand). Using a 14C isotopic mass balance model it was calculated that biomass burning contributes nearly 10% of the total PAH burden in the studied southern European atmosphere with fossil fuel combustion making up the 90% balance. In contrast, biomass burning contributes about 50% of total PAHs in the atmosphere at the Swedish site. Our results suggest that the relative contributions of biomass burning and fossil fuels to atmospheric PAHs may differ considerably between countries, and therefore, different national control strategies might be needed if a further reduction of these pollutants is to be achieved on a continental-global scale.

Isolation and Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Surface Runoff and Sediments

The distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated in surface runoff and sediments of Lagos, Osogbo and Ile-Ife Western areas of Nigeria. Method for the analysis of PAHs was based on Liquid-Liquid extraction of the runoff and a soxhlet extraction of the sediments followed by a clean up adsorption procedure. The PAHs were separated and quantified by Gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. A blank experiment was done using triply distilled water and following the same procedure for the samples to establish blank levels. In both street runoff and sediments 13 PAHs were identified and quantified. At Osogbo and Ile-Ife areas, the mean levels of PAHs in surface runoff ranged between 0.10–15.81 mg L-1 while in the Lagos area the levels were between 0.1–73.72 mg L-1. Generally, the PAH levels in surface runoff of Lagos constitute 53.03 mg L-1 average ∑ PAH detected in the study area compared to 31.96 mg L-1 average ∑ PAH contribution made by samples from Osogbo and Ile-Ife. The levels of PAHs in sediments are relatively higher compared to those of the street runoff in the study area. PAHs in sediment of Lagos contribute an average of 228.57 mg kg-1 ∑ PAH to the total sediment PAH burden compared to Osogbo and Ile-Ife areas that contribute only 91.13 mg kg-1 average ∑ PAH to the total PAH burden of the study area. The relatively higher average ∑ PAHs reported for Lagos area compared with those of Osogbo and Ile-Ife, is consistent with higher industrial activities and traffic density of the former (1000–10000 vehicles/hr) than the later (450–1500 vehicles/hr).

Implications from a field study regarding the relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and glutathione S-transferase activity in mussels

An aluminium smelter on the west coast of Scotland discharges an aqueous effluent containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at the head of Loch Leven. The loch also supports two mussel (Mytilus edulis) farms. Data are presented on burdens of PAHs in the soft tissues of mussels and the effect of these contaminants on glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity in mussel hepatopancreas. GST activity is shown to be correlated with total PAH burden and also with the concentrations of certain individual PAHs. These field data show that high molecular weight PAHs are closely correlated to GST activity, whereas low molecular weight PAHs are not. This suggests that 5- and 6-ring PAHs have a more pronounced role than 2- to 4-ring compounds in inducing GST activity in mussels from Loch Leven. It is proposed that it may be more appropriate to link GST activity with 5- and 6-ring compounds only, rather than with the total PAH burden.

Multipoint moss passive samplers assessment of urban airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: concentrations profile and distribution along Warsaw main streets

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) distribution along 28 km of Warsaw main street have been surveyed in July 2000 using moss passive samplers as a simple and economic surrogate of direct air sampling. Altogether 74 samplers at 39 crossroads with traffic lights were placed on the lamp post ≈3.5 m above ground. PAHs levels determined in samplers are in range from 828 to 3573 ng/g moss dry weight. The spatial spread of pollution within this range is statistically close to normal distribution with mean value of 2332 ng/g. Variability within and between study areas are rationalized in terms of urban environmental factors. PAHs concentrations profiles across the town have appeared uniform. The dominant compounds are phenantrene, fluoranthene and pyrene. Their contribution is 49–68% of total PAHs burden.

Leaves of Quercus ilex L. as biomonitors of PAHs in the air of Naples (Italy)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined by the GC-MS chromatography in the leaves of Quercus ilex L., an evergreen Mediterranean oak, to monitor the degree of pollution in the urban area of Naples compared to remote areas. Leaf samples were collected in July 1998 from four urban parks, six roadsides and two sites in remote areas. The total PAH contents in Q. ilex leaves ranged from 106.6 in a control site to 4607.5 ng/g d.w. along a road with a high traffic flow. The mean concentration factors (urban/control) were 3.8 for the parks and 15 for the roads. The contribution of carcinogenic PAHs (benz[a]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene) was higher in urban area and differed according to the site, ranging from 6.7% to 21.3%. The total PAH burden in control sites was dominated by the low molecular weight PAHs, whilst along the urban roads fluoranthene, pyrene and benz[a]anthracene among the measured PAHs showed the highest values. PAHs were positively correlated ( P<0.01) to trace metals measured in a previous study.
