Evidence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) in wild fish species from the remote tropical marine environment, South China Sea

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their alternatives (e.g., dechlorane plus (DPs) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE)) are ubiquitous in various environmental media. However, limited data is available on these chemicals in edible fish species from the wide-open South China Sea (SCS). In the present study, ten legacy PBDEs and three substitutions (DBDPE and two DPs) were analyzed in 16 wild fish species sampled from the open SCS to investigate their spatial and species-specific variations. The results showed that the total concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, and DPs in fish samples were in the range of 1.69 to 47.6, not detected (nd) to 21.0, and nd to 3.80 ng/g lipid weight (lw), respectively. BDEs 47, 209 and 100 were the dominant target PBDE congeners, representing 49.2%, 17.2% and 9.93% of the total PBDE concentrations, respectively. Higher concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, and DPs were found in fish species from the Wanshan Archipelago compared to those from the Mischief Reef and the Yongxing Island, suggesting the significant influence of anthropogenic activities. Species-specific differences in levels of PBDEs were observed, with the order of bathydemersal > demersal > pelagic ≈ reef-associated > benthopelagic species. The average fanti value of all fish samples was 0.68, suggesting commercial DP products as a contamination source. The levels of PBDEs, DPs, and DBDPE in fish samples were relatively low compared with those from other locations around the globe. Finally, the health risks concerning the ingestion of BDEs 47, 99, 153 and 209 via fish consumption collected from the SCS are negligible.

Analysis of pollution status and influencing factors of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in household dust in five cities in northern China

Objective: To investigate the pollution levels and influencing factors of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in household dust in five cities in northern China. Methods: Based on the "Chinese Indoor Environment and Health Surveillance" project carried out by the National Institute of Environmental Health, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2018-2019, during the warm season (April 2018 to September 2018) and the cold season (November 2018 to March 2019), Lanzhou in Northwest China, Shijiazhuang in North China, Panjin in Northeast China, Luoyang in Central China, and Qingdao in East China were selected as the research sites. A total of 87 families were recruited to study residences in real-life scenarios. At the same time, dust samples were collected to detect the concentration of PBDEs. The level of household environmental indicators was measured, and the residential building characteristics and family behavior habits were collected through questionnaires. A total of 142 valid dust samples and 140 valid questionnaires were obtained. The differences in PBDE concentrations across seasons, wind zones, residential building characteristics, and family habits were analyzed. The exploratory factor analysis was performed to investigate the possible sources of PBDEs, and multivariate linear regression was used to explore the factors influencing PBDEs in household dust. Results: The M (Q1, Q3) of total PBDE concentrations in 142 household dust samples in five cities was 144.51 (106.61, 222.65) ng/g in the warm season and 145.10 (98.57, 180.65) ng/g in the cold season, respectively. There were seasonal differences in the concentration of ∑12PBDEs in Luoyang and Shijiazhuang (P<0.01). The concentration of BDE-71 was highest among PBDE homologues, followed by BDE-66 and BDE-47. Three factors were extracted by exploratory factor analysis in the warm season, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 67.90%. The multivariate linear regression showed that the house completion less than ten years [β (95%CI): 0.186 (0.013, 0.359)], infrequent home cooking [β (95%CI):-0.342 (-0.570, -0.114)], and increased residential PM10 concentration [β (95%CI): 0.001 (0.000, 0.002)] during the warm season, as well as the house far from driveway [β (95%CI): 0.093 (0.013, 0.172)], house area less than 90 m2 [β (95%CI):-0.138 (-0.264, -0.013)], and lower residential xylene concentration [β (95%CI):-0.006 (-0.011, -0.001)] during the cold season might be related to the elevated concentrations of ∑12PBDEs in household dust. Conclusion: The pollution of PBDEs in household dust in five northern cities is at a medium to high level. Years of house completion, frequency of cooking at home, residential PM10 concentration, distance from house to driveway, house area, and residential xylene concentration may influence household PBDE concentrations.

Occurrence, source identification and risk assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in water and sediments of Osun River, Nigeria

BackgroundIn the present study, the concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in water and sediments of Osun River, Nigeria were determined.MethodsThe obtained water samples were subjected to liquid-liquid extraction while the sediment samples were subjected to extraction using n-hexane and acetone. The extracts were quantified using a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer to assess their distribution, source identification, and ecological risk assessments.ResultsThe results of the study indicated that BDE-99, BDE-183, and BDE-209 were not detected in the water samples while BDE-28 had the most significant mean contribution (0.057 mg/L w.w) to the total PBDEs in the water samples. The sediment samples were dominated by enhanced concentrations of BDE-100 congener (mean concentration 0.184 mg/kg d.w). The compositional profiles of the PBDE congeners indicated the abundance of higher BDEs in the sediment samples compared to the water samples, a phenomenon attributed to the lower reduction rate and lower water solubility of the higher BDEs. Source identification indicated that commercial deca-BDE mixtures might represent the major source of PBDEs in the studied river. Risk assessment of PBDEs in water samples showed that the mean concentrations of tri-BDE, tetra-BDE, penta-BDE, and hexa-BDE exceeded the acceptable limits, suggesting adverse health risks to the public. Ecological risk assessment of PBDEs in sediment samples showed medium ecological risk by hexa-BDE (0.1 ≤ RQ ≤ 1) and high ecological risks due to tri-, tetra-, penta-, and deca-BDEs (RQ > 1).ConclusionThe study concludes that efficient and cost-effective remediation strategies should be developed and employed in the abatement of these persistent organic pollutants from the environment.

Identification of serum metabolites associated with polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) exposure in papillary thyroid carcinoma: a case–control study

As the most common endocrine cancer, thyroid cancer (TC) has sharply increased globally over the past three decades. The growing incidence of TC might be counted by genetics, radiation, iodine, autoimmune disease, and exposure to environmental endocrine–disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), being typical EDCs, have been widely utilized in plastics, electronics, furniture, and textiles as flame retardants since the 1980s, and research has indicated a significant correlation between their exposure and the risk of TC. Even so, PBDEs exposure impact on the metabolic signature for TC remains unexplored. In this study, eight congeners of PBDEs were determined in serum from 111 patents with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and 111 healthy participants based on case–control epidemiology using gas chromatography–atmospheric pressure chemical ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (GC-APCI–MS/MS). Based on the tertile distribution of total PBDEs concentrations in 59 participants, metabolomics analysis was further performed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to hybrid quadrupole–Orbitrap MS. In the partial correlation analysis, the 29 identified metabolites were correlated with PBDEs exposure (P < 0.05). In addition, PBDEs disrupted the metabolism of glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, taurine, and hypotaurine, indicating that neurotransmitters, oxidative stress, and inflammation are the vulnerable pathways affected in PTC. Furthermore, (±)-octopamine and 5-hydroxyindole, both of which modulate the actions of neurotransmitters, emerged as potential disturbed metabolite markers for TC following exposure to PBDEs. This study analyzed the impact of PBDEs on PTC in terms of the metabolic changes and further explored possible biomarkers, which helped us have a deep understanding of the possible mechanism of the effects of PBDEs on TC.

Mitigation of PBDE net discharge in hazardous waste thermal treatment system through reintroducion of sludge and fly ash into GASMILD operations

The presence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in consumer products, waste treatment processes, and treated ashes poses a significant environmental threat. Due to the lack of research on the removal of PBDEs during waste incineration, this study investigated the effectiveness of a Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment System (HAWTTS) utilizing reburning of sludge and fly ash (SFA) with gasification-moderate or intense low-oxygen dilution (GASMILD) combustion for PBDE removal. The closed-loop treatment of sludge and ash within the HAWTTS provides a potential pathway for near-zero PBDE emissions. The GASMILD combustion addresses potential combustion issues associated with fly ash recirculation. The system achieved an impressive overall removal efficiency of 98.4% for PBDEs, with minimal stack emissions (2.45 ng/Nm³) and a negative net discharge rate (−1.02 μg/h). GASMILD combustion played a crucial role (92.7%–97.6% destruction) in addressing challenges associated with high-moisture feedstocks and SFA residues. Debromination of highly brominated PBDEs occurred within the incinerator, resulting in an increased proportion of lower brominated PBDEs in the bottom slag compared to the feedstock. Air Pollution Control Devices (APCDs) achieved a total PBDE removal efficiency of 74.4%. However, the hydrophobic nature of PBDEs limited removal efficiency in scrubbers (36.0%) and cyclonic demisters (37.86%). This study demonstrates that reintroducing SFA into the GASMILD combustion process offers an effective and environmentally sustainable strategy for reducing net PBDE levels in hazardous waste. This approach also provides additional benefits such as energy conservation, reduced carbon emissions, and lower operating costs associated with secondary treatment of thermally treated byproducts.

Contamination characteristics and dietary intake risk of brominated flame retardants in fishes around a typical e-waste dismantling site in Southern China

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their substitutes, novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), are ubiquitously present in the aquatic environment of electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling region, leading to their inevitable absorption and accumulation by aquatic organisms, which can be transferred to human via directly aquatic product consumption or through food chain, thereby posing potential health risks. This study focused on fish samples from Guiyu and its surrounding areas, and found the total PBDEs concentrations were 24–7400 ng/g lw (mean: 1800 ng/g lw) and the total NBFRs concentrations were 14 to 2300 ng/g lw (mean: 310 ng/g lw).Significant positive correlations were found among PBDE congeners, among different NBFRs, and between NBFRs and commercial PBDEs that they replace. ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs in the intestine were 620–350,000 and 91–81,000 ng/g lw (mean: 83000 and 12,000 ng/g lw, respectively), significantly exceeding those in the gills, where ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs were 14–37,000 and 39–45,000 ng/g lw (mean: 9200 and 2400 ng/g lw, respectively). The ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs showed no non-carcinogenic risks to the target population through dietary intake. Despite the significantly higher daily intake of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) compared to decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209), the non-carcinogenic risk associated with BDE209 remained higher than that of DBDPE. Our findings can assist researchers in understanding the presence of BFRs in aquatic organisms, inhabiting e-waste dismantling areas, and in evaluating the associated health risks posed to humans through dietary exposure.

One Health assessment of persistent organic chemicals and PFAS for consumption of restored anadromous fish.

Restoration efforts have led to the return of anadromous fish, potential source of food for the Penobscot Indian Nation, to the previously dammed Penobscot River, Maine. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Penobscot Indian Nation's Department of Natural Resources (PINDNR), and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), measured contaminants in six species of anadromous fish. Fish tissue concentrations were then used, along with exposure parameters, to evaluate potential human and aquatic-dependent wildlife risk. PINDNR collected, filleted, froze, and shipped fish for analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), dioxins/furans, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Contaminant levels were compared to reference doses (where possible) and wildlife values (WVs). Chemical concentrations ranged from 6.37 nanogram per gram (ng/g) wet weight (ww) in American Shad roe to 100 ng/g ww in Striped Bass for total PCBs; 0.851 ng/g ww in American Shad roe to 5.92 ng/g ww in large Rainbow Smelt for total PBDEs; and 0.037 ng/g ww in American Shad roe to 0.221 ng/g ww in Striped Bass for total dioxin/furans. PFAS concentrations ranged between 0.38ng/g ww of PFBA in Alewifeto 7.86 ng/g ww of PFUnA in Sea Lamprey. Dioxin/furans and PFOS levels indicated that there are potential human health risks. The WV for mink for total PCBs (72 ng/g) was exceeded in Striped Bass and the WV for Kestrel for PBDEs (8.7 ng/g) was exceeded in large Rainbow Smelt. Mammalian wildlife consuming Blueback Herring, Striped Bass, and Sea Lamprey may be at risk based on PFOS WVs from Canada. Anadromous fish returning to the Penobscot River potentially could represent the restoration of a major component of tribal traditional diet. However, information about contaminant levels in these fish is needed to guide the tribe about consumption safety. Analysis of select species of fish and risk calculations demonstrated the need for a protective approach to consumption for both humans and wildlife. This project demonstrates that wildlife can also be impacted by contamination of fish and their risks can be as great or greater than those of humans. A One Health approach addresses this discrepancy and will lead to a healthier ecosystem.

Analysis and Pollution Assessment of Brominated Flame Retardants (PBDEs, DBDPE, and BTPBE) in Settled Dust from E-waste and Vehicle Processing Areas in Northern Vietnam

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) are typical brominated flame retardants (BFRs), which were widely added to polymeric and textile materials to meet fire safety requirements. PBDEs (including commercial penta-, octa-, and deca-BDE mixtures) have been classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention, while DBDPE and BTBPE are considered as PBDE replacements. In the present study, concentrations of PBDEs (major congeners of technical PBDE mixtures such as BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154, 183, 197, 207, and 209), DBDPE, and BTBPE were simultaneously analyzed in settled dust samples collected from e-waste and end-of-life vehicle (ELV) processing areas in northern Vietnam. The dust samples were extracted by using an ultrasonic processor subsequently by acetone and acetone/hexane (1:1) mixture for 10 min each time. The dust extract was treated with concentrated sulfuric acid and activated silica gel to remove interferences. BFRs were analyzed by using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) equipped with a DB-5ht column. The mass spectrometer was operated at electron capture negative ionization (ECNI) and selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. Concentrations of total PBDEs, DBDPE, and BTBPE ranged from 77 to 240,000 (median 6000), from &lt;20 to 240,000 (median 5500), and from &lt;10 to 9200 (median 160) ng/g, respectively. Concentrations of BFRs in the e-waste dust were significantly higher than those measured in the ELV dust, suggesting e-waste processing activities as potential sources of BFRs in dust. Among BFRs analyzed, BDE-209 and DBDPE were the most predominant compounds, implying intensive application of deca-BDE mixtures and alternative formulations.

Characterization and distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in shellfish in Shenzhen coastal waters and assessment of human health risks

This study aims to investigate the profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in shellfish obtained from Shenzhen coastal waters and assess the potential health risks. We analyzed 74 shellfish samples from eight different species for PBDEs (BDE-28, −47, −99, −100, −153, −154, −183, −209). The concentrations of total PBDEs in different shellfish species ranged from 2.02 to 360.17 pg g−1 wet weight, with the highest levels found in Pectinidae, Babylonia areolate, Ostreidae, Perna viridis, Haliotis diversicolor, Corbiculidae, Pinctada margaritifera, and Veneridae in descending order. Among the PBDE congeners analyzed, BDE-47 was the most abundant, followed by BDE-154 and BDE-153. Furthermore, the estimated daily intake of PBDEs through shellfish consumption for Shenzhen residents were between 0.11 and 0.19 ng kg−1(bw) day−1. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically investigate the profiles of PBDEs in eight different shellfish species from Shenzhen's coastal waters and evaluate the potential human health risks associated with shellfish consumption.

The Spatial Distribution and Potential Risk Assessment of POPs in Farmland around a Typical E-Waste Dismantling Site.

Pollution from electronic-waste (E-waste) dismantling is of great concern. This study investigated the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in 253 cropland soil samples around an abandoned E-waste dismantling site in Taizhou city, Zhejiang province in China, using an analytical method which simultaneously extracted, purified and determined the identity and quantity of the three types of persistent organic pollutants. Meanwhile, their spatial distributions, pollution characteristics, and risk assessments were further analyzed. Total PCBs in the test soils ranged from below method detection limits (ND) to 2985.25μgkg-1 on a dry weight basis (d.w.), and the spatial distribution indicated a "hot spot" of PCBs pollution in the study area. The PAHs were detected in all samples with total concentrations ranging from 4.99 to 2723.06μgkg-1d.w. The distribution of PBDEs showed the pollution characteristics of "family-run workshops", with a total content range of ND ~ 899.34μgkg-1d.w., of which BDE209 was typically the dominant congener, accounting for 74.05% of the total PBDEs content in the test soils, with the highest content reaching 857.72μgkg-1d.w. Results showed that the ecological and lifetime carcinogenic risks of PCBs and PAHs were low in the study area, but the health risk caused by oral ingestion and dermal contact accounted for the highest proportion of the total exposure risks, while inhalation could be ignored. PBDEs in soils of the study area were a potential chronic non-carcinogenic risk, particularly for children. Therefore, in order to protect human health and environment, it is necessary to regulate the management of E-waste dismantling sites and pollution control.

Using an optimized relative response factor database to simplify a pyrolyzer/thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method of screening for phthalate esters, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and polybrominated biphenyls in polymers

The international analytical standard IEC 62321–3–3 describes a method for the screening analysis of phthalate esters, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in polymers by pyrolyzer/thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py/TD-GC/MS). The IEC 62321–3–3 method uses a database of relative response factors (RRFs) (calculated by dividing the response factor (RF) for a target compound by the RF value for a substitute compound (SC) selected from among all target compounds) to quantitate each targeted analyte. A drawback of this method is that a separate RRF database must be created from expensive standard solutions that contain each targeted compound for each instrument, which is a labor-intensive task. In this study, we have developed a “ready-to-use” RRF database that can be used on multiple different instruments. This method eliminates the need to create an RRF database for each instrument and greatly simplifies the screening workflow described in the IEC 62321–3–3 standard. Because it only requires a mixed n-alkane solution and polymer reference materials, which are generally easy to procure and easy to use, the method is highly convenient and suitable for general-purpose use. Assigning tetra-BDE, penta-BDE, deca-BDE, or deca-BB as the SC for each PBDE and PBB analyte allowed the variance in RRFs between instruments to be reduced to a degree suitable for screening analysis. When this method was applied, recovery rates of individual PBDEs and PBBs remained within the range of 74–130 % over an extended period of 54 months. Simultaneous analysis of phthalate esters, PBDEs, and PBBs in various polymer reference materials was also performed with the optimized method on four different instruments and recovery rates of each targeted compound were evaluated. The recovery rates for each phthalate ester, total PBDEs, and total PBBs were within the range of around 100 ± 30 % for all tested samples.

Disentangling Source Profiles and Time Trends of Halogenated Flame Retardants in the Great Lakes.

Thirty-five polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and eight other alternative flame retardants were measured in air samples (vapor plus particles) collected at six sites near the North American Great Lakes between 2005 and 2019 as part of the Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network (IADN). These data were analyzed using a multiple linear regression model to determine spatial and temporal trends. Overall, the levels of flame retardants remain significantly higher in urban sites compared to rural and remote sites except for pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), hexabromobenzene (HBB), and total Dechlorane Plus (ΣDP). Here, we report the first findings of decreasing levels of ΣDP at Sturgeon Point, New York. The atmospheric levels of total PBDEs remain unchanged over time near Lakes Michigan and Superior and declined near Lakes Erie and Ontario, with rate constants at the latter two lakes revealing halving times of approximately 7 to 14 years. This work presents results from the first investigation of PBDE source apportionment in the Great Lakes atmosphere. Source apportionment by use of positive matrix factorization (PMF) identified two legacy commercial technical mixtures (i.e., penta-BDE and deca-BDE mixes) and elucidated a factor representing ambient degradation. Our results show that weathered local sources of technical commercial mixtures, and their photolysis contribute most to the total PBDE burden in the Great Lakes atmosphere.

Concentrations and Characteristics of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in Marine Zooplankton from the Gaoping Waters of Southwestern Taiwan

Bioaccumulation by zooplankton is the outset for persistent organic pollutants that enter the marine food chain. Owing to a full spectrum of anthropogenic activities, the Gaoping waters of southwestern Taiwan are exposed to large quantities of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). However, information on these contaminants in zooplankton in this study area is lacking. In this study, we analyzed 19 PBDE congeners concentrations in 36 zooplankton samples from the Gaoping waters. A high variation in the total PBDE concentrations in zooplankton (from not detected to 1415 ng g−1 dry weight) was found, with the highest PBDE levels being recorded near the entrance of the Kaohsiung Harbor (KH). Significantly higher levels were noted for the KH transect than for the Gaoping River estuary (GR) and Fengshan Township (FS) transects, indicating that PBDE inputs originate from the ocean sewage outfalls. BDE-15 (43%) and BDE-209 (16%) were the predominant PBDE congeners in the zooplankton. Our results suggest that anthropogenic activities might predominantly contribute to significantly high PBDE concentrations. The traditional food web may easily transport these higher levels of PBDEs in zooplankton to higher trophic levels of marine organisms, since the Gaoping waters serve as essential nursery and spawning grounds for invertebrates and fishes.

Occurrence and ecological risks of brominated flame retardants and dechlorane plus in sediments from the Pearl River Estuary and Daya Bay, South China.

Considering the phasing-out of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), environmental concerns of PBDE alternatives and dechlorane plus (DP) are rising. Accordingly, this study investigates occurrence and ecological risks of PBDEs, PBDE alternatives and DPs in sediments of two littoral regions, the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and Daya Bay (DYB), in southern China. Total PBDEs concentrations in surface sediments of the PRE and DYB were in the range (mean) of 0.30-28.7 (8.71) and 0.29-43.4 (6.05) ng/g dw, respectively. DP levels in surface sediments of the PRE (0.004-0.27ng/g dw) were significantly higher than those in the DYB (0.005-0.24ng/g dw) (p<0.05). BDE 209 was the predominant component, followed by DBDPE, exhibiting regional variations in BFRs usage. Vertical profiles of BFRs and DP in the PRE and DYB sediment cores exhibited clear anthropogenic influences. Risk quotients suggest critical ecological risks of tetra-, penta- and deca-BDE congeners in all the surface sediments.

Sediment contamination with polybrominated diphenyl ethers and alternative brominated flame retardants: case study in urban lakes of Hanoi,Vietnam.

Information regarding the contamination of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in lake sediments from Vietnam and Southeast Asia is still very limited. To fill such knowledge gaps, surface sediment samples from five urban lakes in Hanoi, Vietnam, were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and some other BFRs. Concentrations of total PBDEs ranged from 1.1 to 26 (median 6.6) ng/g dry weight with the most predominant congeners as BDE-209 (62 ± 17%), BDE-99 (10 ± 8%), and BDE-47 (6 ± 5%). Concentrations of other BFRs decreased in the order: decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) > 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) > hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153) > pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), which were about one to two orders of magnitude lower than PBDEs. BDE-209 and DBDPE were highly correlated (Pearson's r = 0.879; p < 0.01), suggesting their similar applications and/or environmental fate. Potential sources of BFRs in lake sediments are estimated to be wastewater discharge, riverine inflow, and atmospheric deposition.

Adipose tissue levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in relation to prognostic biomarkers and progression-free survival time of breast cancer patients in eastern area of southern China: A hospital-based study

Evidence indicates that individual or groups of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are associated with risk of breast cancer (BC). Epidemiological studies of PBDEs and BC progression are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between PBDE burdens in adipose tissues and prognostic biomarkers of BC as well as progression-free survival (PFS) of patients for the first time. The concentrations of 14 PBDE congeners in breast adipose tissues of 183 cases from the eastern area of southern China were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by logistic regression models for the associations between PBDE levels and prognostic biomarkers. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analyses were conducted to identify the correlations between PBDEs and PFS. The results showed that BDE-99 and 190 levels were positively associated with clinical stage and N stage respectively (OR = 2.61 [1.26–5.40], OR = 2.78 [1.04–7.46]). Concentrations of BDE-28 and BDE-183 were negatively associated with the expression of estrogen receptor (ER) (OR = 0.30 [0.11–0.81]; 0.39 [0.15–0.99]) and progesterone receptor (PR) (OR = 0.36 [0.14–0.92]; 0.37 [0.15–0.91]), and increased BDE-47 was associated with lower human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression (OR = 0.44 [0.23–0.86]). Adipose levels of BDE-71, 99, 138, 153, 154 and total PBDEs were positively associated with p53 expression (all P < 0.05). Finally, BDE-47, 99 and 183 were considered as independent prognostic factors for shorter PFS in the Cox models (adjusted hazard ratios = 3.14 [1.26–7.82]; 2.25 [1.03–4.94]; 2.60 [1.08–6.25], respectively). The recurrence risk and prognosis of BC may be closely bound to the body burdens of certain PBDE congeners. Further epidemiological and experimental studies are needed for confirmation.

Positive association between dietary exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers and breast cancer risk in the French E3N cohort: The role of vegetable oil consumption.

Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, like Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), is suspected of playing a role in the occurrence of breast cancer. Moreover, there is growing evidence that food chemical contaminants, especially lipophilic ones such as PBDEs, could interact with different components of the diet. The objective of the present study was to assess the association between dietary intake of PBDEs and breast cancer risk in the French E3N cohort study, and to investigate the potential modification of this association by vegetable oil consumption. The study included 67879 women. Intakes of eight PBDEs were estimated using food consumption data from a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, and food contamination levels measured by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES). Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate Hazard Ratios (HR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) for the association between total PBDEs dietary intake and breast cancer risk. Interaction measures for vegetable oil consumption were estimated on both additive and multiplicative scales. The women were followed for a maximum of 21.4years, and 5 686 developed an incident breast cancer. A positive linear trend was highlighted between dietary intake of PBDEs in quintile groups and breast cancer risk, borderline with statistical significance (p-trend=0.06, HRQ5vsQ1 and 95% CI: 1.09 [0.99;1.20]). Interaction measures for vegetable oil consumption were significant in both additive and multiplicative scales. Higher effect sizes of the association were highlighted in high consumers of vegetable oil, i.e. ≥4.6g/day (HRQ5vsQ1 and 95% CI: 1.23 [1.08; 1.40]), and almost no effect were found in low consumers (HRQ5vsQ1 and 95% CI: 0.97 [0.86; 1.10]). Highlighting such interactions between nutrients and chemicals is crucial to develop efficient dietary recommendations to limit the negative health effects associated with exposure to food chemical contaminants.

Characterization and Interpolation of Sediment Polychlorinated Biphenylsand Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethersin Resident Killer Whale Habitat along the Coast of British Columbia, Canada.

The northeastern Pacific northern and southern resident killer whale (Orcinus orca) populations are listed as threatened and endangered in Canada, respectively, with persistent, bioaccumulative contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), posing threats to their recovery. Concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in subtidal surface sediments collected from 97 sites along the British Columbia (BC) coast were used to identify their distribution and profiles, and to assess killer whale habitat quality. Victoria Harbour (VH3(site ID: 1) ) sediments exhibited the highest PCB and PBDE concentrations. For PCBs, PCB-138 was found at the highest concentration, followed by PCB-153, PCB-110, PCB-149, PCB-101, and PCB-118. For PBDEs, individual congeners were ranked as follows: BDE-209 > BDE-207 > BDE-206 > BDE-208 > BDE-47 > BDE-99. Principal component analyses (PCA) illustrated the variations in contaminant profiles, with PC1 for PCBs and PBDEs correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW , p < 0.003). Based on the PCA, sediment particle size, total organic carbon (TOC), and water depth at collection were other factors associated with the distribution of PBDEs, while PCB profiles were associated with TOC. Total PCB and PBDE concentrations at 100% and 34% of the sites, respectively, exceeded the recently adopted British Columbia's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy Working Sediment Quality Guidelines (PCBs 3.7 pg/g dry wt and PBDEs 1000 pg/g dry wt), considered protective of killer whales. Our findings suggest that the legacy of banned PCBs and PBDEs has the potential to constrain the recovery of killer whales as a result of their mobilization from sediments and consequent uptake by marine food webs. Occurrence of legacy and replacement plasticizers, bisphenols, and flame retardants in potable water in Montreal and South Africa

The occurrence of thirty-nine contaminants including plasticizers, bisphenols, and flame retardants in potable water from Montreal and South Africa was analyzed to determine their presence and concentrations in different water sources. In Montreal, five bottled water (BW) brands and three drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) were included. In South Africa, water was sampled from one urban DWTP located in Pretoria, Gauteng, and one rural DWTP located in Vhembe, along with water from the same rural DWTP which had been stored in small and large plastic containers. A combination of legacy compounds, typically with proven toxic effects, and replacement compounds was investigated. Bisphenols, Dechlorane-602, Dechlorane-603, and s-dechlorane plus (s-DP) were not detected in any water samples, and a-dechlorane plus (a-DP) was only detected in one sample from Pretoria at a concentration of 1.09 ng/L. Lower brominated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)s were detected more frequently than higher brominated PBDEs, always at low concentrations of <2 ng/L, and total PBDE levels were statistically higher in South Africa than in Montreal. Replacement flame retardants, organophosphate esters (OPEs), were detected at statistically higher concentrations in Montreal's BW (68.56 ng/L), drinking water (DW) (421.45 ng/L) and Vhembe (198.33 ng/L) than legacy PBDEs. Total OPE concentrations did not demonstrate any geographical trend; however, levels were statistically higher in Montreal's DW than Montreal's BW. Plasticizers were frequently detected in all samples, with legacy compounds DEHP, DBP, and replacement DINCH being detected in 100 % of samples with average concentrations ranging from 6.89 ng/L for DEHP in Pretoria to 175.04 ng/L for DINCH in Montreal's DW. Total plasticizer concentrations were higher in Montreal than in South Africa. The replacement plasticizers (DINCH, DINP, DIDA, and DEHA) were detected at similar frequencies and concentrations as legacy plasticizers (DEHP, DEP, DBP, MEHP). For the compounds reported in earlier studies, the concentrations detected in the present study were similar to other locations. These compounds are not currently regulated in drinking water but their frequent detection, especially OPEs and plasticizers, and the presence of replacement compounds at similar or higher levels than their legacy compounds demonstrate the importance of further investigating the prevalence and the ecological or human health effects of these compounds.

Assessment of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) Level and Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Water and Sediment of Gulf of Guinea

The Lagos lagoon is the largest of the four lagoon systems of the Gulf of Guinea coast. This aquatic resource of multiple usages receives diverse organic and inorganic materials from domestic, industrial, emission, and thermal sources. The levels of Polybrominateddiphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were assessed to ascertain the pollution status of surface water and sediment within this lagoon system. Four stations were sampled for PBDEs analysis, and ranged for surface water physicochemical parameters are (27.93 to 28.50 ⁰C), (115.00 to 2152.70 µS/cm), (2.00 to 2.80 mg/L), (6.45 to 7.63), (25.02 to 84.60 NTU), (226.30 to 3999.00 mg/L), for temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, and total dissolved solids respectively. While the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in sampled sediment ranged from 0.5 to 5.71 mg/L., the total concentrations of PBDEs in sediments ranged from 31.6 to 47.5 µg/Kg. Whereas the BDEs concentration in water ranged from 3.7 to 10.5 pg/L, total PBDE concentration of individual congener for water ranged from approximately 0.8 to 12.5 pg/L. The BDE 28 predominates across the locations followed by BDE 99. Impact of PBDEs concentration in the marine environment was evident within the study area.
