A bibliometric analysis of acupuncture for Parkinson's disease non-motor symptoms from 2003 to 2023.

Parkinson's disease non-motor symptoms (PD-NMS) significantly affect patients' quality of life. Acupuncture has emerged as a potential complementary therapy for PD-NMS. This study aims to investigate general research status, hotspots and trends of acupuncture as a treatment for PD-NMS. Literature on Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) from 2003 to 2023 was retrieved, and bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer and CiteSpace software. 159 publications by 894 authors from 37 countries, 300 institutions, and 96 journals were retrieved and analyzed. The number of publications in this field is generally on the rise yearly. China was the leading contributor with 57 publications, and the United States followed with 36 publications and had the highest total citation count of 1562. Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine ranked the highest with a total of 12 publications, while Harvard University had the highest average citation rate of 70 citations per publication. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the most prolific journal with 11 articles that had accumulated 122 citations. Park Hi-Joon was the leading contributor with seven articles and 314 citations. The keyword analysis highlighted emerging areas of interest like "deep brain stimulation" and "alpha-synuclein". Different countries, institutions, and authors should enhance cooperations, and the underlying mechanisms of acupuncture for PD-NMS should be demonstrated. This study will be helpful for better understanding the current knowledge and gaps in the areas of acupuncture as a treatment of PD-NMS.

A Decade in Blockchain: A Bibliometric Reflection on the Growth and Interdisciplinary Reach of a Disruptive Technology

This study seeks to deliver a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of blockchain research undertaken from 2013 to 2023. It seeks to map the field’s evolution, highlight emerging trends, and identify key contributors and thematic areas. Understanding these aspects is crucial for guiding future research and policymaking in the rapidly growing domain of blockchain technology. The study utilises a systematic bibliometric analysis approach and the Scopus database was used for collecting data. The analysis includes keyword trends, citation patterns, author productivity, and network analysis. The results reveal significant expansion and diversification in blockchain research, with 13,369 publications and 52,009 contributing authors. Key metrics include a total citation count of 266,483 and an average of 19.93 citations per paper, underscoring the field’s scholarly impact. The study identifies core research themes such as smart contracts, security, IoT integration, and emerging topics like AI and sustainability. The findings highlight the interdisciplinary nature of blockchain research and its global distribution, with notable contributions from China and the United States. The study’s reliance on selected databases and predefined keywords may exclude relevant grey literature and industry reports. Future research should integrate these sources for a more complete view. This study provides a panoramic view of blockchain research, offering valuable insights into its development, current state, and future directions. Identifying key trends, influential contributors, and emerging themes contributes to the academic discourse and supports strategic planning for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers engaged in blockchain technology.

Predicting the emergence of disruptive technologies by comparing with references via soft prompt-aware shared BERT

The exponential increase in the annual volume of publications places a significant challenge in assessing the disruptive potential of technologies in new papers. Prior approaches to identifying disruptive technologies based on the accumulation of paper citations are characterized by their limited prospective and time-consuming nature. Moreover, the total citation count fails to capture the intricate network of citations associated with the focal papers. Consequently, we advocate for the utilization of the disruption index instead of depending on citation counts. Particularly, we devise a novel neural network, called Soft Prompt-aware Shared BERT (SPS-BERT), to predict the potential technological disruption index of immediately published papers. It incorporates separate soft prompts to enable BERT examining comparative details within a paper's abstract and its references. Additionally, a tailored attention mechanism is employed to intensify the semantic comparison. Based on the enhanced representation derived from BERT, we utilize a linear layer to estimate potential disruption index. Experimental results demonstrate that SPS-BERT outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in predicting five-year disruption index across the DBLP and PubMed datasets. Additionally, we conduct an evaluation of our model to predict the ten-year disruption index and five-year citation increments, demonstrating its robustness and scalability. Notably, our model's predictions of disruptive technologies, based on papers published in 2022, align with the expert assessments released by MIT, highlighting its practical significance. The Impact of Key Performance Indicators on Faculty Research in Higher Education

This study investigates the effectiveness of key performance indicators (KPIs) in evaluating the research contributions of academic staff in Uzbekistan, aiming to provide a nuanced understanding of faculty performance assessment. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative bibliometric analysis of publication data from 500 faculty members with qualitative interviews from 30 academics. The quantitative analysis focuses on metrics such as total publications, citation counts, and h-index scores, while the qualitative component explores faculty perceptions regarding the influence of KPIs on their research activities and career development. The analysis reveals significant variability in research productivity, with faculty averaging 12.4 publications and 110.2 citations. Econometric modeling indicates a strong positive correlation between publication metrics and citation impact, suggesting that higher publication output enhances academic visibility. Qualitative insights highlight the pressures of a "publish-or-perish" culture, which adversely affects research quality and faculty morale, particularly in contexts with limited institutional support. This research contributes to the discourse on academic performance evaluation by emphasizing the limitations of traditional metrics and advocating for a more holistic assessment framework. It highlights the need for higher education institutions to consider both quantitative and qualitative measures to better reflect the complexities of academic contributions in Uzbekistan.

Trends and Patterns of Endodontic Therapy in Primary Teeth: A Visualized Bibliometric Analysis of Research Output in Saudi Arabia

Abstract Aim: To analyze research trends and collaboration patterns in endodontic therapy of primary teeth in Saudi Arabia using bibliometric analysis. Materials and Methods: A search was conducted in the Web of Science database on March 1, 2024, to identify relevant publications. A total of 54 articles were retrieved and ranked according to citation counts. The key indices contain total citation counts, h-index, and publication counts. The analysis used Biblioshiny (Bibliometrix R package) and VOSViewer to show the collaboration networks and publication trends. Two reviewers were used for extraction to ensure validity and reliability. Results: The bibliometric analysis showed an increase in research output and citations, with peaks in 2020 and 2023. King Abdulaziz University and King Saud University were the leading institutions in this field, with the most publications and extensive collaboration networks. The most highly cited article was published by Bawazir OA in 2006, which was about root canal obturation methods in primary teeth. The keyword used most was “Mineral trioxide aggregate.” The key journals in this field were Pediatric Dentistry and the Saudi Dental Journal. Conclusion: This study confirms the emergence of Saudi Arabia as a significant contributor to research in primary tooth endodontics, demonstrating increasing scholarly impact and academic interest in this field. The results highlight the country’s growing role on the global research stage. Collaboration patterns suggest that this positive trend is likely to enhance impactful collaborative research in the future.

The Effect of Self-Citation on Scholarly Recognition and Visibility

Self-citation, an important aspect of academic work [1], requires careful oversight to protect the integrity and perception of scholarly contributions. Although self-referencing is often necessary for expanding upon past research, an excessive amount can negatively affect a researcher's reputation and rankings in academic indices. Indices/Lists like the Highly Cited Researcher (HCR) [2] index by Clarivate Analytics often adjust or exclude metrics associated with high self-citation rates to provide a more accurate representation of a researcher's impact, thereby enhancing visibility and credibility. According to the authors of [3] [4], self-citation rates typically range from 7.38% in Economics & Business to 15.6% in Mathematics. The same authors in [3] recommend keeping self-citations below 10%, which aligns with the general agreement among academic institutions and researchers. Maintaining this limit helps in qualifying for prestigious rankings and awards, promoting fair competition in academia. There are several methods to verify the self-citation ratio, with two of the most popular ones being the use of the Scopus platform [5] and the Web of Science (WOS) portal by Clarivate [6]. Scopus and WOS do not directly display the self-citation rate, but they do offer both the total citation count and the count excluding self-citations. Additionally, these portals can generate a citation report for authors, providing details on the number of citations, h-index, citing articles (with an option to exclude self-citations), and a year-by-year breakdown of citation counts. To find the self-citation rate Scopus and WOS, subtract the number of citations excluding self-citations from the total citations, divide this result by the total number of citations, and then multiply by 100 to get the percentage. For instance, if the total citations are 12,526 and the citations excluding self-citations are 12,000, the difference of 526 self-citations divided by the total results in a rate of 4.199%. This percentage indicates how much self-citations add to the overall citation count, which is important for maintaining appropriate citation standards.

Trend of Artificial Intelligence in Nursing from 2004 to 2024: A Bibliometric Analysis Based on Web of Science

This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of studies related to artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of nursing, accessed from the Web of Science database. The search was conducted using the keywords "artificial intelligence OR ChatGPT OR Chatbot) and (nursing OR nursing care) and (practice OR innovation OR machine learning OR deep learning)" between January 01-20, 2024. A total of 164 studies related to artificial intelligence in nursing were identified through the search. It was found that 65.85% of these studies were research articles, with the majority being published in the Journal of Nursing Management (nine studies), and the highest number of studies being published in 2023. The most prolific author, with seven studies, was identified as Rozzano Locsin, while the United States was determined to be the country with the highest number of publications, and Florida Atlantic University and Tokushima University were the institutions with the most studies. The most frequently used keyword was "artificial intelligence," with a total citation count of 1010 and an h-index of 20. The study indicates an increasing interest in AI-related research in nursing, particularly in recent years, with a trend towards quantitative growth.

The 100 highest-cited original articles in large vessel occlusions: A bibliometric analysis.

Large vessel occlusions (LVO) are a common etiology of morbidity and mortality. The current literature lacks a synthesis of the landscape and trends in research. We aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited original articles on LVOs to assess the current state of research. Scopus database was queried from inception to December 2022 to identify the most cited original articles from 4506 retrieved records on LVOs. Publication year, country of origin, total and average annual citation count, and type of study were collected for each article. The journal impact factor (JIF) was obtained from the Journal Citation Reports database. The articles were published between 1994 and 2021, with most (n = 82) published during the 2011-2020decade. The median total citation count was 108.5, with an interquartile range (IQR) of 81-149.5. The median (IQR) average annual citation count was 15.9 (11.5-22.9). Half of the articles were published in Stroke (n = 35) and Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery (n = 15), with JIFs ranging from 1.8 to 202.7. The USA was the leading country in contributing to LVO research (n = 45). Most studies focused on the treatment (n = 63) and diagnosis (n = 22) of LVOs. Most articles were published during the past decade, highlighting the impact of the clinical trials of endovascular treatment on the discipline. With several ongoing clinical trials on the horizon, continued growth of the field is anticipated in the upcoming decades.

Knowledge mapping of macrophage and its role in aneurysm from 1999 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis

BackgroundVarious factors play crucial roles in aneurysm development and prognosis. Macrophages have recently emerged as a major research focus. Despite the numerous studies on the role and function of macrophages in aneurysm pathogenesis, no bibliometric analyses have focused on this topic. ObjectiveThis study aimed to analyze articles related to macrophages and aneurysms to reveal trends, hotspots, and new frontiers in macrophage-related aneurysm research. MethodsWe retrieved and incorporated 1211 articles from the Science Citation Index Expanded database of the Web of Science Core Collection between 1999 and 2022. The data were analyzed and visualized using CiteSpace and VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel 2019 was used to plot the data. ResultsThe most influential articles were published between 1999 and 2022, with a total citation count of 43870. This study encompassed a comprehensive analysis of 74 research directions. The year with the highest number of publications was 2021 when 109 articles were published. 'ARTERIOSCLEROSIS THROMBOSIS AND VASCULAR BIOLOGY' journal has made significant contributions by publishing the highest number of articles (99 articles), while funding support primarily came from the National Institutes of Health and United States Department of Health and Human Services. The United States exerted a substantial influence within this field, with a total publication count of 453 publications and the highest centrality value (0.63). Recent studies have focused on understanding the developmental processes underlying aneurysms and devising preventive measures to effectively impede disease progression. ConclusionsOur analysis demonstrates the rapid growth in research exploring the relationship between macrophages and aneurysms over the past two decades. Continued exploration and collaboration among different specialties and manufacturers will facilitate innovative approaches for effective management strategies that target patients with diverse forms of aneurysms.

The Top-20 Studies About Anterior Shoulder Instability From an Altmetric Analysis Had Higher Levels of Evidence Than Those From a Traditional Bibliometric Analysis

To compare the characteristics of the top-20 studies about anterior shoulder instability according to the Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) with total citation counts. Two separate searches were performed for articles related to anterior shoulder instability. The Altmetric search identified the top-20 articles according to AAS. A bibliometric search using Web of Science identified the top-20 most-cited articles. Altmetric criteria were applied to the bibliometric list and vice versa. The AAS from the Altmetric list ranged from 44 to 432. The highest AAS from the bibliometric search was 70. One study appeared in both lists. Most online mentions were from X (formerly Twitter). The geographical breakdown of X mentions saw 71 countries appearing in the Altmetric search versus 21 in the bibliometric search. The total citations in the bibliometric list ranged from 91 to 358 versus 0 to 121 for the Altmetric list. The Altmetric top-20 list contained 8 studies that were Level II or higher versus 3 in the bibliometric list. The top-20 studies according to AAS or citation count are not the same. The top-20 studies by AAS are composed of studies at higher levels of evidence versus the top-20 studies when listed by citation count. Electronic searches are an important way to access information in the modern world. Different search options generate results according to different parameters and may generate different results for the same query. It is important to understand these differences so that users have a better understanding of where the most clinically useful information can be found, especially regarding medical conditions.

Global research trends and future directions in diabetic macular edema research: A bibliometric and visualized analysis.

Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) significantly impairs vision in diabetics, with varied patient responses to current treatments like anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy underscoring the necessity for continued research into more effective strategies. This study aims to evaluate global research trends and identify emerging frontiers in DME to guide future research and clinical management. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of publications related to diabetic macular edema retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) between its inception and September 4, 2023, was conducted. Microsoft Excel, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, Bibliometrix Package, and Tableau were used for the bibliometric analysis and visualization. This encompasses an examination of the overall distribution of annual output, major countries, regions, institutions, authors, core journals, co-cited references, and keyword analyses. Overall, 5624 publications were analyzed, indicating an increasing trend in DME research. The United States was identified as the leading country in DME research, with the highest h-index of 135 and 91,841 citations. Francesco Bandello emerged as the most prolific author with 97 publications. Neil M. Bressler has the highest h-index and highest total citation count of 46 and 9692, respectively. The journals "Retina - the Journal of Retinal and Vitreous Diseases" and "Ophthalmology" were highlighted as the most prominent in this field. "Retina" leads with 354 publications, a citation count of 11,872, and an h-index of 59. Meanwhile, "Ophthalmology" stands out with the highest overall citation count of 31,558 and the highest h-index of 90. The primary research focal points in diabetic macular edema included "prevalence and risk factors," "pathological mechanisms," "imaging modalities," "treatment strategies," and "clinical trials." Emerging research areas encompassed "deep learning and artificial intelligence," "novel treatment modalities," and "biomarkers." Our bibliometric analysis delineates the leading role of the United States in DME research. We identified current research hotspots, including epidemiological studies, pathophysiological mechanisms, imaging advancements, and treatment innovations. Emerging trends, such as the integration of artificial intelligence and novel therapeutic approaches, highlight future directions. These insights underscore the importance of collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches in advancing DME research and clinical management.

Exploring trends and developments in cholesteatoma research: a bibliometric analysis.

Examination of the scientific literature on cholesteatoma from past to present using bibliometric methods. A total of 2353 articles on cholesteatoma between 1980 and 2023 were obtained from the Web of Science database and statistically analysed using bibliometric techniques. The journals with the highest number of contributions to the literature were Otology & Neurotology (n = 192), Acta Oto-Laryngologica (156) and Laryngoscope (149). The most impactful journals based on h-index and total citation (TC) counts were Laryngoscope (h:36, TC: 4241), Otology & Neurotology (29, 3141), and American Journal of Otology (26, 2071) respectively. The most prolific author was Kojima H. (n = 49). According to the findings of the Reference Publication Year Spectroscopy (RPYS) analysis, there has been a significant increase in academic interest in Cholesteatoma since its first description in 1959, particularly following the expansion of its definition in 1977. Subsequently, the trend of increased interest has risen rapidly in later years, with notable peaks in research intensity observed in 1989, 2006, and 2011. The highest academic trend occurred in 2006. In recent years, trending topics have included innovative approaches such as diagnostic and imaging methods particularly alongside technological developments, endoscopic surgery, recurrence and complications, prognosis and quality of life, artificial intelligence, and obliteration. In conclusion, the evolution of cholesteatoma and its research priorities reveal temporal shifts and emerging areas of interest over time. Primarily, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical approaches remain central. Additionally, research has expanded to encompass developments in surgical techniques, imaging modalities, cellular biology, pathology, and molecular mechanisms.

Publications in paediatric critical care medicine: Trends from Pakistan.

To analyse the characteristics of research published from Pakistan on paediatric critical care medicine. The exploratory study was conducted at the Aga Khan University, Karachi from July 2021 to March 2022, and comprised a comprehensive search on MedLine, Google Scholar and PakMediNet databases for literature from Pakistan pertaining to paediatric critical care medicine published between January 2010 and December 2021. The search was done using appropriate key words. Conference abstracts and papers authored by paediatric intensivists with unrelated topics were excluded. Data was extracted on a structured spreadsheet, and was subjected to bibliometric analysis. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. Of the 7,514 studies identified, 146(1.94%) were analysed. These were published in 51 journals with a frequency of 13.3 per year. There were 107(73.3%) original articles, 96(65.8%) were published in PubMed-indexed journals, and 35(24%) were published in locally indexed journals. Further, 100(69.4%) papers were published from 5 paediatric intensive care units in Karachi, and 81(56%) were contributed by a single private-sector hospital. The total citation count was 1072, with 2(1.4%) papers receiving >50 citations. There was a linear trend with some skewing and an annual growth rate of >15%. Publications from Pakistan related to paediatric critical care medicine showed positive linear growth. There was a paucity of multicentre studies, randomised controlled trials, and high-impact publications.

A bibliometric study on trends in chiropractic research from 1920 to 2023

ObjectiveAn increasing body of evidence suggests a positive role of chiropractic in the treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal disorders. This study aims to explore current research hotspots and trends, providing insights into the broad prospects of this field. MethodsA bibliometric review was conducted on all chiropractic articles included in the Web of Science Core Collection before December 31, 2023. ResultsOver the past century, the volume of research in the field of chiropractic has been fluctuating annually, with four peaks observed in total. The United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom are leading countries. Chu, Eric Chun-Pu is the author with the most publications, while Bronfort, Gert has the highest total citation count. The University of Southern Denmark has produced the most publications, while Queens University - Canada is the most central institution. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics is the journal with the most publications and citations, while the Journal of the American Medical Association is the most central journal. The two most-cited articles were both authored by Eisenberg DM. Emerging keywords include "chronic pain" and "skills". The theoretical mechanisms and scientific basis of chiropractic, its clinical practice and safety, education and training, integration with other disciplines, and patient experiences and satisfaction are the frontiers and hotspots of research. ConclusionThis study integrates bibliometric analysis to summarize the current state of research and global network centers in the field of chiropractic, further highlighting the hotspots and trends in this field. However, Individual and national rankings should be interpreted with caution due to our focus on Web of Science rather than PubMed.

Elucidating the pathogenesis behind arteriovenous malformations of the central nervous system: a bibliometric analysis.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are vascular malformations of the central nervous system (CNS) with potential for significant consequences. The exact pathophysiologic mechanism of AVM formation is not fully understood. This study aims to evaluate bibliometric parameters and citations of the literature of AVMs to provide an overview of how the field has evolved. We performed an electronic search on Web of Science to identify the top 100 published and indexed articles with the highest number of citations discussing the pathogenesis of AVMs. This study yielded 1863 articles, of which the top 100 were selected based on the highest total citation count. These articles included 24% basic science, 46% clinical, and 30% review articles. The most-cited article was a clinical article from 2003, and the most recent was published in 2022. The median number of authors was 6, with the highest being 46 for a clinical article. The top 5 journals were identified, with the highest impact factor being 20.1. 13 countries were identified, with the US contributing the most articles (approximately 70%). Regarding genes of investigation, VEGF was one of the early genes investigated, while more interested in RAS/MAPK has been garnered since 2015. There is a growing interest in AVM genomics and pathogenesis research. While progress has been made in understanding clinical aspects and risk factors, the exact pathophysiological mechanisms and genetic basis of AVM formation remain incompletely understood. Further investigation of key genes in AVM pathogenesis can allow identification of potential therapeutic targets.

A 10-year analysis of the racial distribution of authors in plastic surgery research and the impact of minority mentorship

BackgroundThis study evaluates the racial distribution in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) publication authorship and illustrates the impact underrepresented in medicine (URiM) mentorship has on increasing diverse trainee contributions to the PRS peer-reviewed literature. MethodsArticles published in the seven highest-impact PRS peer-reviewed journals within the last 10 years (2012–2022) were reviewed and analyzed for first and senior authors’ race and ethnicity, publication year, and citation count. ResultsA total of 23,549 publications were identified of which 8250 were from the US-based institutions. A random sampling of 778 publications (∼10 ​%) were scrutinized for first and senior author race and ethnicity. Across all journals, 64.5 ​% of senior authors were White, 29.9 ​% Asian, 4.6 ​% Hispanic, and 1.0 ​% Black. First authors were 59.5 ​% White, 32.8 ​% Asian, 5.2 ​% Hispanic, and 2.6 ​% Black (p=<0.0001). The presence of a URiM senior author increased the likelihood of a URiM first author 7-fold (p=<0.0001); 95 ​% CI [3.5–14.0]). There was no statistically significant difference in the total citation count relative to author race or ethnicity. The Aesthetic Surgery Journal had the greatest proportion of White senior authors (73.6 ​%), while Microsurgery had the highest percentage of URiM senior authors (8.7 ​%). ConclusionsURiM authorship of PRS publications is limited and mentorship is essential to improve underrepresented perspectives in the PRS peer-reviewed literature.

TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT: A BIBLIOMETRIC EXPLORATION OF EMERGING TRENDS

This paper offers a systematic and thorough examination of the convergence of emerging technologies and Knowledge Management (KM). Using data from the Scopus database, the study examines 956 publications over 11 years, applying bibliometric methodologies to identify patterns and deficiencies in the existing academic environment. The study emphasizes a strong academic interest in incorporating technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) into KM methods. To obtain comprehensive and reliable results, the researchers used various analytical tools, including exclusion criteria to refine the search, Microsoft Excel to calculate the frequency and percentage of published materials, Harzing's Publish and Perish software to calculate citation metrics, and to create bibliometric networks and visualizations. The bibliometric analysis reveals significant findings, such as a total citation count of 10,399, an average of 945.2 per year, and 10.88 per paper. These results highlight the long-lasting influence of the analyzed collection of documents. An examination of research trends provides valuable insights into the continuous development of the subject, highlighting initial patterns centered around fundamental technologies and the growing emphasis on multidisciplinary approaches. To summarise, this study, based on Scopus, not only brings together the scattered nature of existing research but also offers a proactive view of upcoming patterns. This assists academics and professionals in navigating the ever-changing field of KM, which is influenced by evolving technology.

Current patterns and trends of microplastic pollution in the marine environment: A bibliometric analysis.

Microplastics are pervasive in the natural environment and pose a growing concern for global health. Plastic waste in marine environments has emerged as a global issue, threatening not only marine biota but also human health due to its implications for the food chain. This study aims to discern the patterns and trends of research, specifically on Marine Microplastic Pollution (MMP), based on a bibliometric analysis of scientific publications from 2011 to 2022. The methodology utilized in this study comprises three stages: (a) creating a bibliographical dataset from Scopus by Elsevier and the Web of Science Core Collection by Clarivate Analytics, (b) analyzing current research (trends and patterns) using bibliometric analysis through Biblioshiny tool, and (c) examining themes and subthemes in MMP research (wastewater treatment, plastic ingestion, the Mediterranean Sea, microplastics pollution, microplastics in freshwater, microplastic ingestion, plastic pollution, and microplastic pollution in the marine environment). The findings reveal that during the studied period, the number of MMP publications amounted to 1377 articles, with an average citation per publication of 59.23 and a total citation count of 81,553. The most cited article was published in 2011, and since then, the number of publications on this topic has been increasing steadily. The author count stood at 5478, with 22 trending topics identified from the 1377 published titles. Between 2019 and 2022, the countries contributing most to the publication of MMP articles were China, the United States of America (USA), and the United Kingdom (UK). However, a noticeable shift in the origin of author countries was observed in the 2019-2022 timeframe, transitioning from a dominance by the USA and the UK to a predominance by China. In 2019, there was a substantial increase in the volume of publications addressing the topic of microplastics. The results show that the most prevalent themes and subthemes pertained to MMP in the Mediterranean Sea. The journals with the highest number of MMP articles published were the Marine Pollution Bulletin (253 articles) and Science of the Total Environment (190 articles). The analysis concludes that research on MMP remains prominent and appears to be increasing each year.

Association Between Altmetrics and Traditional Bibliometrics in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association and The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

As the dissemination of scientific knowledge pervades social media, appraising impact with traditional bibliometrics led to the creation of alternative metrics, termed altmetrics. Lacking existent foot and ankle surgery literature altmetric analysis, we analyzed the 10 most-cited articles in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association (JAPMA) and The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery (JFAS) in 2013 and 2017. Citation count, Altmetric Attention Score (AAS), Mendeley Reads, and professional society-affiliated Twitter ages were collected and analyzed with descriptive statistics. Pearson correlation coefficient identified relationships between traditional and nontraditional metrics. The 40 articles showed a high median and large range in total citations for JAPMA (13.5 [range, 5-27]) and JFAS (28 [range, 5-69]). Media AAS Mendeley Reads also showed a high median with wide range for both JAPMA (32.5 [range, 0-135]) and JFAS (25 [range, 0-113)]. No significant correlation between total citations and AAS was seen in 2013 (r = -0.205; P = .388) or 2017 (r = -0.029; P = .903). The correlation between total citation count and Mendeley reads was significant in 2017 (r = 0.646; P = .002) but not in 2013 (r = -0.078; P = .744). Although cumulative AAS increased from 2013 to 2017 by 68.75%, with Twitter contributing most to both periods, there existed no significant correlation with Twitter age and the correlation coefficient between AAS and total citations (r = 0.655; P = .173). The results of this investigation show the utility and predictivity of alternative metrics in complementing traditional bibliometrics and encourage the promotion of publications through journal-specific social media.
