Psychometric Properties of the Brief Fatigue Inventory in Hemodialysis Patients during a Dialysis Day: A Preliminary Report.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) in hemodialysis patients. During a dialysis day, patients completed both 9-item BFI and 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)-II questionnaires. The psychometric properties of the BFI were assessed in terms of reliability and validity. The BFI had an overall Cronbach's coefficient alpha of .92. Inter-item correlation coefficients between BFI items ranged from .38 to. 81 (all p < .0001). Exploratory factor analysis revealed bidimensional factor structure of the BFI-fatigue "severity" and fatigue "interference" explaining 11.0% and 62.0% of the total variance in the data set, respectively. In criterion validity analysis, BFI composite score correlated significantly with the total BDI-II score-Pearson correlation coefficient .40 (p < .0001). These preliminary results support the satisfactory psychometric properties of the BFI in assessing fatigue among hemodialysis patients during a dialysis day in a clinic setting.

Inflammatory Cytokines, but Not Dietary Patterns, Are Related to Somatic Symptoms of Depression in a Sample of Women.

BackgroundDepression is a heterogenous disorder with both cognitive and somatic symptom dimensions that may differentially relate to systemic inflammation. Diet, which has the potential to modulate both inflammation levels and mood, is yet to be studied within the context of individual depression dimensions. This study examined the associations between inflammatory cytokines and dietary patterns with depressive symptom dimension profiles among a sample of women recruited in a non-clinical setting.MethodsInflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α), inflammatory diet (Diet Inflammatory Index; DII), and depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-II; BDI-II) were measured in 136 females (Mage = 22.01 ± 4.02, range 18–59 years). Multiple linear regressions were used to investigate the relationships between inflammatory cytokines and diet with self-reported cognitive, somatic, and total depressive symptoms, adjusting for demographic factors.ResultsFindings showed that increased somatic dimension scores were positively associated with IL-6 (ß = 0.273, p = 0.002) and TNF-α (ß = 0.215, p = 0.017), but not inflammatory diet (p = 0.300). Total BDI-II scores were only positively associated with IL-6 (ß = 0.221, p = 0.012), and cognitive dimension scores were not associated with any inflammation measures.ConclusionsThese findings contribute to existing evidence that inflammatory cytokines are associated with the somatic symptoms of depression. Inflammatory diet index was not associated with depression measures.

¡No me duele cuando me deprimo!: An Examination of Ethnic Differences in Depression Symptoms Among Latinx and Non-Latinx Primary Care Patients

The research on ethnic differences in prevalence rates of depression is mixed. Additionally, culture has been hypothesized to impact symptom manifestation. The purpose of this study was to examine prevalence rates of depression among Spanish-speaking Latinx and non-Latinx White (NLW) primary care patients and explore ethnic differences in how depression symptoms manifest. Participants were 240 primary care patients who completed a demographic questionnaire and the Beck Depression-Inventory-2 (BDI-II). Latinx primary care patients had lower prevalence rates of depressive symptoms and less severe depressive symptoms than NLW primary care patients. Holding total BDI-II score constant, Latinxs also endorse pessimism, past failures, feelings of being punished, agitation, and problems with sleeping less than their NLW counterparts. This study adds support to research that indicates that Latinxs have lower rates of depression than NLWs and suggests that Latinxs are not more likely to endorse somatic complaints.

The effect of low vitamin D status on sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in apparently healthy men: a pilot study.

Hypovitaminosis D is associated with sexual dysfunction in apparently healthy women and with erectile dysfunction in men with the presence of concomitant disorders. This study was aimed at investigating sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in young men with low vitamin D status. The study included 15 apparently healthy men (18-40 years old) with vitamin D deficiency (group A), 16 subjects with vitamin D insufficiency (group B), and 16 men with normal vitamin D status (group C). All participants of the study completed questionnaires investigating their sexual function (the International Index of Sexual Function-15-IIEF-15 for heterosexual men), as well as the presence and severity of depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition-BDI-II). Compared with healthy men, subjects with vitamin D deficiency obtained lower scores for erectile function, orgasmic function, and sexual desire, while individuals with vitamin D insufficiency lower scores only for erectile function. Erectile dysfunction was more prominent in group A than group B. The total BDI-II score was higher in group A than in the other study groups. The results of the study suggest that low vitamin D status impairs male sexual functioning and severity of sexual dysfunction correlates with the degree of hypovitaminosis D.

Sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in women with various types of prediabetes - a pilot study.

No previous study has investigated sexual functioning in prediabetic women. This study was aimed at investigating sexual function in young women with various types of prediabetes. The study included four groups of women: women with isolated impaired fasting glucose (Group A; n=19), isolated impaired glucose tolerance (Group B; n=18), presence of both impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance (Group C; n=18), as well as matched healthy controls (Group D; n=19). All participants completed questionnaires evaluating sexual function (Female Sexual Function Index - FSFI) and the presence and severity of depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition - BDI-II). The total FSFI and BDI-II scores were lower in Group C than in the remaining groups of women, while the total FSFI score was lower in Groups A and B than in Group D. Patients with both impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance had lower scores in all domains (sexual desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, sexual satisfaction and dyspareunia). Compared to Group D, Group A was characterized by lower domain scores for sexual desire and sexual satisfaction, while Group B by lower domain scores for desire, arousal and orgasm. In all groups of prediabetic women, the overall FSFI score correlated negatively with the degree of insulin resistance and weakly with the total BDI-II score. Impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance may disturb sexual functioning and induce depressive symptoms.

The effect of bromocriptine treatment on sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in women with mild hyperprolactinemia.

Elevated prolactin levels are associated with sexual dysfunction in women. No previous study has investigated the effect of dopamine agonists on sexual functioning in women. The study enrolled 30 young women with mild hyperprolactinemia (serum prolactin levels in the range between 25 and 50ng/mL), 15 of whom were later treated with bromocriptine (5-10mg daily), as well as 14 age- and weight-matched healthy women. All women completed a questionnaire evaluating female sexual function (Female Sexual Function Index - FSFI) and a questionnaire evaluating the presence and severity of depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory Second Edition - BDI-II). Women with mild hyperprolactinemia had a lower total FSFI score, lower scores in all domains of sexual functioning (desire, arousal, lubrication, and dyspareunia), as well as a lower total BDI-II score than control women. Bromocriptine increased the FSFI score and tended to reduce BDI-II score. Moreover, the drug normalized desire, arousal, lubrication and dyspareunia, as well as improved orgasm and sexual satisfaction and this action correlated with changes in prolactin levels and an improvement in insulin sensitivity. No changes in sexual functioning and depressive symptoms were observed in untreated women with mild hyperprolactinemia and healthy controls. Bromocriptine treatment improves female sexual functioning and slightly affects depressive symptoms in women with elevated prolactin levels and this effect is related to its prolactin-lowering and metabolic effects.

The effect of l-thyroxine treatment on sexual function and depressive symptoms in men with autoimmune hypothyroidism.

Thyroid autoimmunity and mild hypothyroidism in women seem to be associated with sexual dysfunction and depressive symptoms. Data concerning similar associations in men are limited. The aim of this study was to investigate sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in men with autoimmune hypothyroidism. The study population consisted of three groups: men with autoimmune overt hypothyroidism (group A), men with autoimmune subclinical hypothyroidism (group B) and healthy euthyroid males without thyroid autoimmunity (group C). Apart from measuring serum levels of thyrotropin and free thyroid hormones and thyroid antibody titers, all included patients completed a questionnaires evaluating male sexual function (International Index of Erectile Function-15: IIEF-15) and assessing the presence and severity of depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition - BDI-II) before and after 6 months of levothyroxine treatment. Men with overt hypothyroidism obtained lower scores in all five domains of IIEF-15, while men with subclinical hypothyroidism only in erectile function. The total BDI-II score was higher in groups A than in groups B and C, as well as higher in group B than in group C. L-thyroxine improved erectile function and normalized intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function, sexual desire and overall satisfaction in group A, as well as normalized erectile function in group B. In group A, L-thyroxine reduced, while in group B tended to reduce total BDI-II. The obtained results suggest that autoimmune hypothyroidism in men is characterized by sexual and mood disturbances and that hypothyroid patients with sexual dysfunction and depressive symptoms benefit from L-thyroxine treatment.

Association of Physical Fitness with Depression in Women with Fibromyalgia.

The aim of this study was to examine the association between physical fitness and depressive symptoms in women with fibromyalgia (FM). We also assessed whether different fitness components present independent relationships with depressive symptoms. Cross-sectional study. University facilities and FM associations. Four hundred and forty-four patients with FM according to the 1990 American College of Rheumatology criteria. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). Physical fitness (aerobic fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, and motor agility) was assessed using the standardized Senior Fitness Test battery and the handgrip strength test. A standardized composite score for fitness was computed and divided into quintiles. Overall, the fitness tests presented inverse associations with the total BDI-II score (P < 0.05). The patients in the highest fitness quintile had 8.4% lower depressive symptoms than the patients in the lowest fitness quintile (P = 0.014). The odds of severe symptoms of depression were between 3.7% and 16.9% lower for each performance unit in the back-scratch, handgrip, arm-curl, and eight-feet up-and-go tests. When all the fitness tests were simultaneously considered, the back-scratch test was the only one independently associated with the total BDI-II score (P = 0.001; R(2) = 0.023). Although higher physical fitness was generally associated with lower symptoms of depression in women with FM, the observed associations were somewhat weak and inconsistent, differing from those previously observed in healthy adults. Further research to determine the clinical relevance of the association between physical fitness and depression in FM is warranted.

The effect of vitamin D supplementation on sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in young women with low vitamin D status.

Hypovitaminosis D is associated with abnormal female sexual functioning. The aim of our study was to assess whether vitamin D supplementation affects sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in young women with low vitamin D status. The study included 47 women with vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. All women with vitamin D deficiency were treated with oral vitamin D, while women with vitamin D insufficiency were either treated with vitamin D or left untreated. At the beginning of the study and six months later, all patients completed questionnaires evaluating female sexual function (FSFI) and depressive symptoms (BDI-II). The total FSFI score and scores in three domains (sexual desire, orgasm and satisfaction) were lower while the overall BDI-II score was higher in women with vitamin D deficiency than in women with vitamin D insufficiency. Vitamin D improved sexual desire in women with both vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D insufficiency, increased the total FSFI score and scores for orgasm and sexual satisfaction, as well as decreased the total BDI-II score in women with vitamin D deficiency. The obtained results indicate that vitamin D supplementation improves female sexual functioning and mood in women with low vitamin D status. < p > < /p >.

Sexual function and depressive symptoms in young women with thyroid autoimmunity and subclinical hypothyroidism.

The results of few studies conducted to date suggest an increased prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with thyroid disorders. The aim of this study was to compare female sexual function and depressive symptoms between women with autoimmune thyroid disease and with mild thyroid failure. The study included four groups of young women: euthyroid women with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (Group 1), women with nonautoimmune subclinical hypothyroidism (Group 2), women with autoimmune subclinical hypothyroidism (Group 3) and healthy euthyroid females without thyroid autoimmunity (Group 4). Beyond measuring serum hormone levels and thyroid antibody titres, all enrolled women completed questionnaires evaluating female sexual function (Female Sexual Function Index - FSFI) and the presence and severity of depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition - BDI-II). The mean total FSFI score was lower in women with autoimmune hypothyroidism than in the remaining groups of women, as well as lower in Groups 1 and 2 than in Group 4. Compared to Group 4, three domains (sexual desire, lubrication and sexual satisfaction) were lower in Group 1, four domains (desire, arousal, lubrication and dyspareunia) in Group 2 and all FSFI domain scores in Group 3. The total BDI-II score was higher in Groups 1 and 2 than in Group 4, as well as higher in Group 3 than in the other groups of women. The obtained results suggest that both thyroid autoimmunity and mild thyroid failure, particularly if they occur together, may negatively affect female sexual function and depressive symptoms.

Evolution of Depressive Symptoms From Pregnancy to the 12th Month Postpartum – a Prospective Study with Non-depressed Women

Objectives To investigate in non-depressed perinatal women, whichBeck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Postpartum Postpartum DepressionScreening Scale (PDSS) scores and proportions of symptomatic items significantlydiffer through the perinatal period. Methods 273 women were assessed with the Diagnostic Interviewfor Genetic Studies, BDI-II and the PDSS at the third trimester of pregnancy/T0(mean age =29.42±7.159 years; mean weeks gestation=32.6±3.61),three/T1, six/T2 and twelve/T3 months postpartum. Results Significantlyhigher scores in T0 than in T1/T2/T3 and in T1 than in T2/T3 were found for: Total PDSS, Sleeping-Eating Disturbances, Emotional Liability, Total BDI-II andits dimension Somatic-Anxiety. Only T0 and T1/T2 didnot significantly differ in Anxiety/Insecurity, Mental Confusion, and Loss of Self. In Guilty/Shame only T1 was significantly higher than T3. Suicidalthoughts were significantly higher in T0 than T1 and lower in T1 than T2/T3. Theproportions of symptomatic items systematically and significantly decreased fromT0 to T3 in changes of sleep, loss of interest in sex, feeling overwhelmed. Significantlyhigher symptomatic proportions in T0 than in all post-partum moments were foundfor: loss of energy, irritability, fatigue, changes in appetite, crying, indecisiveness and worthlessness (these last three also higher in T1 than inT3). Agitation was significantly higherin T1 than in T0. All the cognitive-affective symptoms from BDI-II and PDSSdid not differ. Conclusion From pregnancy to the twelfth month postpartum the depressivesymptomatology, particularly somatic-affective symptoms, significantlydecreased. However even for the women who are not clinically depressed, theperinatal period requires considerable psychological adjustment.

Depressive and suicidal symptoms are common in adolescence, yet often underestimated. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance (2009) found that 6.3% of High School students in the United States had attempted suicide and that 13.8% had seriously considered attempting suicide, during the previous year. Investigating the prevalence of depression and suicidal behaviours in the Italian sample of the SEYE study. SEYLE (Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe) is a randomized controlled trial evaluating school-based health promotion interventions for suicide prevention. The study comprises 12, 395 adolescents from 11 European countries. Italian sample consists of 1195 students (mean age 15.3 ± 0.6; 68% females) from the Molise region. A self-report questionnaire including a number of well-established instruments was administered. For the current analysis, based on baseline data, we focus on the Beck Depression Inventory-II and the Paykel Suicide Scale. Mean BDI-II score was 8 ± 6.48. Total BDI-II scores were significantly higher in females than males (8.83 ± 6.72 vs 6.22 ± 5.55; p < 0.0001), even after controlling for age. 210 adolescents (17.8%) scored higher than 13, indicating some degree of clinical depression. Mean PSS score was 1.14 ± 2.38. Females also scored higher than males on the PSS (1.28 ± 2.45 vs 0.83 ± 2.20; p = 0.002), even after controlling for age. Our results show a high prevalence of depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts among Italian adolescents, especially among females. Knowing that more than 90% of adolescents who commit suicide suffer from an associated psychiatric disorder, an early detection and appropriate care becomes of particular importance.

Depression and other psychological health problems among methamphetamine dependent patients in treatment: Implications for assessment and treatment outcome

Amphetamines are second to cannabis as the most prevalent illicit drug used in Australia, and amphetamine abuse and dependence are associated with significant health and psychosocial harms. The current paper presents a series of studies investigating the prevalence of depression and other psychological problems among Western Australian patients receiving treatment for methamphetamine dependence. In the first study, a medical case-note audit explored the psychological profile among 218 consecutive admissions to an inpatient methamphetamine detoxification program. In the second study, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II, Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996) was administered to 367 patients receiving outpatient treatment for methamphetamine or heroin dependence (Phase 1), and the relationship between scores on the BDI-II and methamphetamine intoxication was explored (Phase 2). High rates of depression and other psychological problems were identified. Approximately 46% of methamphetamine-dependent individuals entering an inpatient treatment unit had been previously diagnosed for a psychological health problem, with approximately 30% requiring admission into a psychiatric hospital. In the second study, the mean total BDI-II score was approximately 22, which is in the moderate range of depression. Methamphetamine-dependent patients' total BDI-II score was similar to that of psychiatric outpatients with clinical depression, but significantly greater than college students and psychiatric outpatients with anxiety disorders (Beck et al., 1996). Methamphetamine use was associated with responses on the BDI-II corresponding with cognitive symptoms, whereas combined methamphetamine and heroin use was associated with responses indicating problems in the somatic domain. Finally, it was found that methamphetamine intoxication at the time of testing, as indicated by a positive saliva methamphetamine screen, affected responses to the BDI-II. These data demonstrate that methamphetamine-dependent individuals will present with significant psychological symptoms that may affect the response to treatment for drug dependence.
