Audio data compression affects acoustic indices and reduces detections of birds by human listening and automated recognisers

ABSTRACT Increasing popularity in passive acoustic monitoring and the ease with which researchers can accumulate large quantities of acoustic data has resulted in challenges for audio recording storage, archiving, and management. Reductions in file size can be achieved by lowering sample rate and compressing to different formats; however, how these processes affect audio data quality, and the resulting interpretation of wildlife data is not well understood. We investigated the effect of sampling rate and lossy compression of audio recordings to MP3 from their native WAV format on the performance of four commonly applied avian bioacoustic applications: community listening, distance estimation, automated recognition, and acoustic indices. Compression to MP3 decreased the number of detections, including a reduction in total abundance of individuals when transcribing audio files for community listening and lower precision and recall for automated recognisers. Sampling rate reduction introduced systematic bias to acoustic indices and had an influence on precision and recall for recognisers as well. We recommend against the use of MP3 compression to reduce file volume and suggest other lossless forms of audio compression where an exact copy of the original recording can be recovered.

THE IMPACT OF SPIDER MODEL OF CORAL TRANSPLANTATION ON FISH ABUNDANCE IN THE WATERS OF BOTUTONUO, GORONTALO PROVINCE

This study aims to determine the abundance of fish in the recovery location of the coral reef ecosystem in Botutonuo waters, Gorontalo Province. The research was conducted in February - May 2023. The research location consisted of 2 sites, namely site A which had coral transplants with spider coral skeletons and site B which had no transplants (natural coral reefs). Observations were made 3 times with an interval of 2 weeks. Reef fish data was collected using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method, with a 50 m x 5 m line transect. Calculation of data using fish abundance rum. The results showed that the number of fish species found in the Botutonuo waters of Gorontalo Province at site A was 89 species with a total individual abundance of 2,429 ind/m2, while at site B there were 69 species with a total individual abundance of 2,054 ind/m2.

Peracarid Assemblages in a Human-Disturbed Location from South-Western Mediterranean Sea: Role of Surface Orientation and Phytal Structure of the Habitat

The goal of this investigation was to assess the role of a number of environmental variables on the traits of a peracarid population inhabiting turfs of Ellisolandia elongata in a Mediterranean disturbed location. Samples were collected from a vertical and a horizontal surface to assess the role of orientation, and several structural traits of the turf (number of fronds, their height and width, available phytal area for colonization, and dry weight) were measured. The samples were characterized by their species composition, relative abundance of constant species, total abundance of individuals, and α-diversity (species richness, Shannon index and Pielou’s evenness). Generalized linear models were used to relate environmental variables with ecological descriptors, whereas a cluster plot and a principal correspondence analysis, both based on the Bray-Curtis coefficient, were conducted to detect the presence of distinct assemblages. Results showed orientation to be a key factor governing the assemblages, since samples from vertical and horizontal surfaces formed definite groups based on Bray-Curtis similarities. Moreover, GLMs pointed out that orientation influenced relative abundance of the majority of constant species, as well as species richness and Shannon index. Phytal height had a positive effect on the relative abundances of Hexapleomera bultidactyla, Coxischyrocerus inexpectatus and Hyale stebbingi, and a negative one on Shannon index and evenness, whereas available phytal area influenced positively evenness and negatively the relative abundance of Elasmopus pocillimanus. Thus, it can be inferred that although species composition depended on surface orientation, the spatial structure of the turf was the main driver for assemblage complexity.

Unexpected residual habitats raise hope for the survival of the fan mussel Pinna nobilis along the Occitan coast (Northwest Mediterranean Sea)

In 2019, the status of the Mediterranean fan mussel Pinna nobilis was elevated to ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List, in response to the pandemic caused by the parasite Haplosporidium pinnae. Identifying refuge habitats, free from parasites, is critical to the survival of the mussel. The distribution of P. nobilis was investigated along the Occitan coast (Northwest Mediterranean Sea) because of the presence of a unique lagoonal system that may provide potential refuges. Interviews with users and managers were conducted to identify target zones where the species was sighted. In situ surveys were carried out to define the main aggregations of fan mussels and characterize the habitat. Line transects were deployed to count and measure individuals to estimate density, abundance, and size distribution. Population densities were variable, ranging from 0.6 ± 0.2 (SE) to 70.8 ± 7.6 ind. 100 m-2, representing one of the highest densities reported in the Mediterranean Sea. The total abundance of individuals across the coast was extrapolated to 163000, with 87% located in Thau and Salses-Leucate, highlighting these lagoons as essential for the survival of the species. This study also revealed the diversity of habitats colonized by P. nobilis. In the context of the pandemic, only the lagoon populations remain unaffected and provide natural refuges that have disappeared from all open-water coastal areas. However, the conditions in these lagoons could become unfavorable, leading to the collapse of the last P. nobilis populations. We therefore propose that Thau and Salses-Leucate lagoons, which harbor the largest remaining populations of P. nobilis, should be declared as conservation priorities.

A fauna de abelhas (Hymenoptera, Apoidea) em áreas de Cerrado e de transição Cerrado-Floresta Amazônica no estado do Tocantins, Região Norte do Brasil

Abstract: Two sites located in Tocantins State, Brazil, were selected for the bee’s community survey. One of them was mostly covered by Cerrado vegetation and the other one is located in the Cerrado-Amazon Rainforest ecotone. Five expeditions were performed in each site throughout a 12-month period, between 2019 and 2020. The total of 771 bee specimens were collected and distributed into four families. Apidae presented the greatest species abundance and richness, it was followed by Halictidae, Megachilidae and Andrenidae, respectively. Trigona pallens (Fabricius) (Apidae) was the species presenting the greatest abundance in both sites, it totaled 118 specimens, which corresponded to 26.9% of the total abundance of individuals belonging to tribe Meliponini. In general, the community presented several species with few individuals and few species with many individuals. Bee collections were performed by using three different methodologies, among them one finds sampling based on the entomological net method, which allowed collecting the largest number of both individuals and species in comparison to the other used methods. Based on the frequency and abundance classes, only few species were classified as very frequent (VF) and very abundant (VA) in both sites based on the frequency and abundance classes. Most species were constant (W) in both regions, and there was a small number of dominant species (D); moreover, more than 70% of the sampled species were considered accidental (Z). According to the present study, either Cerrado or Cerrado-Amazon Rainforest studied sites presented higher species richness than other sites in these biomes sampled in Brazil.

Preliminary study of macro-fouling community in Marina El-Alamein Resort, Egyptian Mediterranean Sea

Marina El-Alamein Resort is a popular summer destination located on the western shores of the Egyptian Mediterranean Sea. In February, April, July, September, and November 2017, fouling specimens were obtained by scraping the submerged artificial substrata of the resort using (40 × 25 cm rectangular frames) with a metal knife. A total of 61 fouling taxa were identified in the samples. Polychaeta was the most diverse group, comprising 25% of the total number of recorded taxa. Three species of Polychaeta were firstly recorded in the Egyptian Mediterranean Sea, comprising one sedentarian species (Protoaricia oerstedii) and two errantian species (Myrianida brachycephala and Syllis jorgei). Temporal variations in fouling communities showed significantly higher species number in February and April. November showed the highest total abundance of individuals, followed by July, and both events were significantly higher than that in other months. The encrusting bryozoan Schizoporella errata, a habitat-forming species, was the most abundant taxon found in April, September, and November meanwhile, the bivalve Brachidontes pharaonis was the most dominant in February and July. Six of the identified species were non-indigenous for the Mediterranean Sea forming and comprised approximately 10% of the total biodiversity.

Abundance of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and the functional groups in two different habitats

Land development often affects the quantity and diversity of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The aim of this study, therefore, was to determine and compare the ant species abundance and the functional groups between two different habitats, representing land development, including pioneer and agroforestry. This research involved a survey of the ants at the Forest Research Education (FRE) of Wanagama I Yogyakarta, and data were accumulated over a period of five months (April, May, June, July, and August). In addition, pit-fall trap and direct collection methods were used, involving the placement of 54 pit-fall traps at two habitats, and the ant specimens were retrieved after a two day period. The results show the total individual abundance of 2,310 and 2,067, on agroforestry and pioneer, respectively. Furthermore, the species richness and diversity index was higher in agroforestry (7; 2.01), compared with pioneer (6; 1.49), where the three dominant species include, Anoplolepis gracilipes, Solenopsis sp., Odontoponera denticulata; and Anoplolepis gracilipes, Odontoponera denticulata, Camponotus sp., respectively. Conversely, the highest amount of invasive ants (Solenopsis sp.) was observed in agroforestry, which negatively impacted on the presence of native species (Odontoponera denticulata). In addition, PCA analysis showed the development of three ant groups on each habitat, hence agroforestry made more real differences in the aspect of species abundance, and none in terms of richness. Therefore, notable differences were observed in the ant communities between both habitats, and agroforestry was indicated as a disturbed area, based on the increment in tramp and invasive ants, alongside low abundance of native and functional groups.

Comparison of dung beetle communities (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) in oil palm plantations and native forest in the eastern Amazon, Brazil

Abstract In order to evaluate the impact of oil palm cultivation on dung beetles in the eastern Brazilian Amazon, comparisons were made of communities in oil palm plantations and native forest. Pitfall traps baited with human feces were buried to soil level in plantations and surrounding forests. Fifty traps were used in each type of vegetation, placed at 50 m intervals along five transects. Dung beetle communities in oil palm plantations have lower species richness (18 spp.) than in surrounding tropical rainforest (48 spp.), as well as altered species composition. Total abundance of individuals was not significantly different between the two habitats, but species composition was greatly different. Species evenness was greater in the forest. Forest corridors for the preservation of dung beetle species may need to be much wider than current designs. The erosion of biodiversity in dung beetles due to oil palm monoculture parallels what has been seen in other animal taxa in tropical tree plantations.

Aproximación preliminar a un índice multimétrico de macroinvertebrados (IMARBO) para evaluar el estado ecológico de ríos de las cuencas alta y media del río Chicamocha en Boyacá, Colombia

Se desarrolló una propuesta preliminar de un Índice Multimétrio de Macroinvertebrados para Ríos del Departamento de Boyacá (IMARBO) con el fin de valorar el estado ecológico de cinco ríos y quebradas de las cuencas alta y media del río Chicamocha. Se caracterizaron parámetros fisicoquímicos y biológicos de la comunidad de macroinvertebrados acuáticos en tres tramos de referencia y nueve estaciones con diferente grado de alteración por deforestación, modificación de hábitats y vertimientos domésticos e industriales. El gradiente de estrés ambiental se estableció mediante un análisis de componentes principales (ACP) y correlaciones bivariadas. Se calcularon 21 métricas de la comunidad de macroinvertebrados, de las cuales se seleccionaron seis para la conformación del IMARBO mediante correlaciones con el gradiente ambiental. Para las métricas seleccionadas se calculó su Eficiencia Discriminativa (ED) entre estaciones de referencia y perturbadas. El índice incluyó la riqueza de familias de Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera y Trichoptera (EPT), el % de riqueza de Ephemeroptera, el % de riqueza de Plecoptera, la abundancia total de individuos, el % de abundancia de Filtradores y el índice BMWP/Col. Con los valores de los percentiles de las métricas en los tramos de referencia se elaboraron las escalas de integridad biótica y de calidad ecológica de los ríos estudiados, las cuales se validaron preliminarmente con una base de datos independiente en una cuenca cercana a la estudiada. El índice propuesto constituye una aproximación preliminar que requerirá futuras comprobaciones a través de un mayor número de datos. Sin embargo, los resultados permitieron diferenciar con claridad los ríos menos contaminados y con una integridad biótica alta (Gámeza y Monguí) de aquellos fuertemente deteriorados y cuyas comunidades de macroinvertebrados presentan muy baja integridad biótica (Chicamocha, Malsitio, Nobsas). De esta manera, el IMARBO podría convertirse en una herramienta útil para la gestión ambiental de los ríos de la región.

Effects of habitat area and spatial configuration on biodiversity in an experimental intertidal community.

Isolating the effects of fragmentation per se (i.e., spatial configuration of habitat patches) on species richness is an ongoing challenge as habitat configuration often covaries with the amount of habitat. Consequently, there is a lack of experimental evidence for configurational effects on species richness in the whole landscape. Here, we developed a novel experimental system for testing the independent and interactive effects of habitat area and configuration on tropical intertidal species richness. Our results confirmed the expectation that average species richness would increase monotonically with habitat area. More intriguingly, we found mixed evidence for a non‐monotonic relationship between species richness and fragmentation per se, with the highest richness at intermediate fragmentation configuration, that is, when habitat tiles were placed in a “several‐small” configuration. The effect of habitat configuration was not due to passive sampling (since area was controlled for), variation in total individual abundance, or niche specialization of species to different landscape configurations. We postulate that a combination of processes, including local negative density dependence and dispersal limitation, could give rise to the observed pattern. We emphasize the importance of considering configurational effects on biodiversity at broader spatial scales and for more experimental research to delve into the mechanisms driving the patterns seen here.

Area-Independent Effects of Water-Retaining Features on Intertidal Biodiversity on Eco-Engineered Seawalls in the Tropics

Over the last decade there has been a global effort to eco-engineer urban artificial shorelines with the aim of increasing their biodiversity and extending their conservation value. One of the most common and viable eco-engineering approaches on seawalls is to use enhancement features that increase habitat structural complexity, including concrete tiles moulded with complex designs and precast “flowerpots” that create artificial rock pools. Increases in species diversity in pits and pools due to microhabitat conditions (water retention, shade, protection from waves, and/or biotic refugia) are often reported, but these results can be confounded by differences in surface area sampled. In this study, we fabricated three tile types (n=10): covered tile (grooved tile with a cover to retain water), uncovered tile (same grooved tile but without a cover) and granite control. We tested the effect of these tile types on species richness (S), total individual abundance (N), and community composition. All tiles were installed at 0.5 m above chart datum along seawalls surrounding two island sites (Pulau Hantu and Kusu Island) south of Singapore mainland. The colonising assemblages were sampled after eight months. Consistent with previous studies, mean S was significantly greater on covered tiles compared to the uncovered and granite tiles. While it is implied in much of the eco-engineering literature that this pattern results from greater niche availability allotted by microhabitat conditions, we further investigated whether there was an underlying species-individual relationship to determine whether increases in S could have simply resulted from covered tiles supporting greater N (i.e. increasing the probability of detecting more species despite a constant area). The species-individual relationship was positive, suggesting that multiple mechanisms are at play, and that biodiversity enhancements may in some instances operate simply by increasing the abundance of individuals, even when microhabitat availability is unchanged. This finding underscores the importance of testing mechanism in eco-engineering studies and highlights ongoing mechanistic uncertainties that should be addressed to inform the design of more biodiverse seawalls and urban marine environments.

Long-term species richness-abundance dynamics in relation to species departures and arrivals in wintering urban bird assemblages

Abstract Temporal dynamics of local assemblages depend on the species richness and the total abundance of individuals as well as local departure and arrival rates of species. We used urban bird survey data collected from the same 31 study plots and methods during three winters (1991–1992; 1999–2000 and 2009–2010) to analyze the temporal relationship between bird species richness and total number of individuals (abundance). We also evaluated local departures and arrivals of species in each assemblage. In total, 13,812 individuals of 35 species were detected. The temporal variation in bird species richness followed the variation in the total number of individuals. The numbers of local departure and arrival events were similar. Also, the mean number of individuals of the recently arrived species (8.6) was almost the same as the mean number of individuals of the departed species (8.2). Risk of species departure was inversely related to number of individuals. Local species richness increased by one species when the total abundance of individuals increased by around 125 individuals and vice versa. Our results highlight the important role of local population departures and arrivals in determining the local species richness-abundance dynamics in human-dominated landscapes. Local species richness patterns depend on the total number of individuals as well as both the departure-arrival dynamics of individual species as well as the dynamics of all the species together. Our results support the more individuals hypothesis, which suggests that individual-rich assemblages have more species.

Synanthropic-dominated biomass in an insular landbird assemblage

The effect of anthropization on sedentary landbirds occurring in late summer on a small Mediterranean island (San Pietro, SW Sardinia) has been studied comparing abundance and biomass among different ecological guilds. The two specialized insular guilds (Mediterranean warblers and rocky cliff species) represent about half of the total individual abundance (47%) but only 16% in terms of biomass. Although almost all the surface of the island is covered by Mediterranean scrub (maquis), Mediterranean warblers were not as dominant as the guild of strictly synanthropic species. This latter guild was the most represented in frequency both for abundance and biomass. I hypothesize that (i) here the anthropization could be considered a locally relevant process disrupting the resource flow and lowering the trophic level and (ii) the dominance of synanthropic birds in terms of biomass could be a general phenomenon extended to a large set of Mediterranean islands. The three most abundant synanthropic species, linked to highly disturbed habitats, showed a larger body mass when compared to specialized species as Mediterranean warblers: when applying the Abundance/Biomass Comparison (ABC), an early cumulating biomass curve was observed, partially overlapping with abundance curve. This pattern did not match with the classic predictions for the ABC model (i.e., species with higher biomass are typical of undisturbed assemblage) and could be wrongly interpreted. Therefore, I suggest that the ABC assumptions are not universal but limited only to assemblages where high body mass species coincide to species of a higher trophic level.

Population dynamics and phenology of two congeneric and sympatric lynx spiders Peucetia rubrolineata Keyserling, 1877 and Peucetia flava Keyserling, 1877 (Oxyopidae)

Numerous phenological studies on spiders belonging to the families Oxyopidae, Thomisidae, Lycosidae, Selenopidae (e.g. Selenops cocheleti) and Salticidae (e.g. Psecas chapoda and Psecas viridipurpureus) have been conducted in the neotropical region. However, studies that simultaneously compare population dynamics and age structure in populations of sympatric species are limited, especially in Oxyopidae. The population dynamics and phenology of two congeneric lynx spider (Peucetia rubrolineata and Peucetia flava) were examined in southeastern Brazil. Several characteristics of the age structure were compared between the two spider species. The variation in the total abundance of individuals and age structure and their relationship with climatic variables were similar between the two spiders. Adults of these spiders were present mainly in spring, indicating an annual reproductive cycle and a ‘stenochronous spring’ phenological pattern. The recruitment of spiders occurred in summer for P. rubrolineata and P. flava, followed by successive phenological peaks at all stages of development. Rainfall and temperature had a positive correlation to population flux in the two spider species studied. Despite the significant climatic effects observed in the Serra do Japi, the phenological pattern of the population in this study was not always repeated in other species of spiders (e.g. Selenops cocheleti).

Cypripedium calceolus (Orchidaceae) in Central Russia: a case study for its populations in two protected areas in the Republic of Mordovia (Russia)

Cypripedium calceolus is considered as one of the flagship plant species of nature conservation. It is legally protected throughout Eurasia. Due to its wide distribution range, this Eurasian species could be considered as Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered taxon. We performed an analysis of the status for some C. calceolus populations in Central Russia located in the Republic of Mordovia, with emphasis on populations situated in the federal protected areas. The aim of our study was to asses the modern state and the endangerment of C. calceolus populations. The environment conditions and species composition in five habitats with rare species in Mordovia were compared using phytoindication methods. Changes in stage spectrum and total abundance dynamics in C. calceolus populations over 2011–2016 were estimated and compared with available data from other locations within species’ range. Reproductive ability of populations from the federal protected area, Mordovia State Nature Reserve, were studied. The results showed that C. calceolus grows in three habitat types that differed in environment conditions and floristic composition. Convallaria majalis was the only species registered in all studied locations, together with C. calceolus. In Central Russia this species occurs in broad-leaved, coniferous and mixed forests. The three populations of C. calceolus within the Mordovia State Nature Reserve and National Park “Smolny” were characterized by the dominance of vegetative individuals in stage spectrum, while generative plants predominated in two other populations located in mixed forests. No correlation between total abundance of individuals and stage spectrum in populations of threatened species has been found over the study period. The population in Mordovia Reserve showed a higher fruit set (36.7% as a mean) than others reported within its range. Continued population monitoring of C. calceolus in Central Russia from different habitat types is suggested. Generalization of jointly obtained demographic, ecological, phytocoenological data will be appropriate in order to develop measures for conservation and management of C. calceolus habitats.

Spatial variation of reef fishes and the relative influence of biotic and abiotic habitat traits

Patterns of distribution of reef fishes were examined across three spatial scales and related to habitat traits along 25 km of the northern Portuguese coast. Response variables included the multivariate assemblage structure, the total number of taxa and individuals, and the abundance of single groups categorized according to their preference for the benthic, proximo-benthic or pelagic environment, feeding and reproductive behaviour. Habitat traits included topographic elements (small and large ‘drops’ like cracks and crevices) and the extent of dominant morpho-functional types of macroalgae (kelp, large foliose, small erect, turf-forming filamentous, and encrusting). All fish responses were characterized by the largest variance at the smallest scale (among transects tens m apart), followed by that among reefs (hundreds m to 1 km apart) and almost null variance among sites (some km apart). Small and large ‘drops’ of the substratum explained, respectively, considerable variation of assemblage structure and the total abundance of individuals, while the extent of bare rock influenced the richness of taxa and that of benthic fishes, fishes feeding on sessile invertebrates and fishes laying benthic eggs or having nesting behaviour. Combinations of abiotic and biotic structural attributes of reefs influenced proximo-benthic fishes, the predators of mobile animals and fishes releasing pelagic eggs. The here reported associations between patterns of distribution of reef fishes and habitat traits have implications for the design of future protection schemes suitable to guarantee the conservation of reef fish communities and of the processes responsible for their variation. Within the SLOSS (single-large vs. several-small) debate in the design of marine reserves, for example, effective protection to the studied reef fishes would be provided by a set of small reserves, rather than a single large which might be appropriate for fishes having wider home ranges.

Changes of Benthic Macrofaunal Composition on a Tidal Flat of Río Gallegos Estuary, Argentina

This work analyzed the variation in composition and abundance of benthic assemblages in an intertidal environment of the Rio Gallegos estuary, Argentina (51°35′ S - 69° 01′ W). The macrofauna was sampled in a tidal flat adjacent to the city in late summer of 2006 and 2013 (March). In total 27 macrofauna taxa were identified; the most abundant species were Darina solenoides (44%) in 2006 and Fabricinuda sp. (89%) in 2013. Biogenic structures composed of aggregates of polychaete (Fabricinuda sp.) tubes and sediment were observed for the first time in December 2006; they are spherical or of irregular shape, 1 to 3 m2 in area, and up to 50 cm in height. In 2013 benthic composition was compared between biogenic aggregates (“patch”) and the area outside them (“non-patch”). Species richness and total abundance of individuals were higher in the patch. The associated benthos was different; Fabricinuda sp. was dominant in the patch (107,780.7 indiv.m-2, SD = 44,772.6), and Kinbergonuphis dorsalis (2139 indiv.m-2, SD = 840) and Notocirrus lorum (1830 indiv.m-2, SD = 516.4) in the non-patch. In 2013, four taxa that were not found in 2006 were recorded only in the patch samples, two bivalves (Sphenia hatcheri and Malletia cumingii) and two polychaetes (Fabricinuda sp. and Ophioglycera eximia). Polychaete aggregations have produced changes in number and abundance of benthic species at the lowest level of the tidal flat.

A sampling optimization analysis of soil-bugs diversity (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea).

Biological diversity analysis is among the most informative approaches to describe communities and regional species compositions. Soil ecosystems include large numbers of invertebrates, among which soil bugs (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea) play significant ecological roles. The aim of this study was to provide advices to optimize the sampling effort, to efficiently monitor the diversity of this taxon, to analyze its seasonal patterns of species composition, and ultimately to understand better the coexistence of so many species over a relatively small area. Terrestrial isopods were collected at the Natural Reserve "Saline di Trapani e Paceco" (Italy), using pitfall traps monthly monitored over 2years. We analyzed parameters of α- and β-diversity and calculated a number of indexes and measures to disentangle diversity patterns. We also used various approaches to analyze changes in biodiversity over time, such as distributions of species abundances and accumulation and rarefaction curves. As concerns species richness and total abundance of individuals, spring resulted the best season to monitor Isopoda, to reduce sampling efforts, and to save resources without losing information, while in both years abundances were maximum between summer and autumn. This suggests that evaluations of β-diversity are maximized if samples are first collected during the spring and then between summer and autumn. Sampling during these coupled seasons allows to collect a number of species close to the γ-diversity (24 species) of the area. Finally, our results show that seasonal shifts in community composition (i.e., dynamic fluctuations in species abundances during the four seasons) may minimize competitive interactions, contribute to stabilize total abundances, and allow the coexistence of phylogenetically close species within the ecosystem.

Temporal Occurrence of TwoMorphoButterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae): Influence of Weather and Food Resources

The seasonality of fruit-feeding butterflies is very well known. However, few studies have analyzed the influence of climatic variables and resource availability on the temporal distributions of butterflies. Morpho helenor achillides (C. Felder and R. Felder 1867) and Morpho menelaus coeruleus (Perry 1810) (Nymphalidae) were used as models to investigate the influences of climatic factors and food resources on the temporal distribution of these Morphinae butterflies. These butterflies were collected weekly from January 2005 to December 2006 in the Parque Nacional de Brasília (PNB). In total, 408 individuals were collected, including 274 of M. helenor and 134 of M. menelaus. The relative abundance of the two species was similar in 2005 (n = 220) and 2006 (n = 188). Of the variables considered, only the relative humidity and resource availability measured in terms of phenology of zoochorous fruits of herbaceous plants explained a large proportion of the variation in the abundance of these butterflies. Both of the explanatory variables were positively associated with the total abundance of individuals and with the abundances of M. helenor and M. menelaus considered separately. The phenology of anemochorous fruits was negatively associated with butterfly abundance. The temporal distribution of the butterflies was better predicted by the phenology of the zoochorous fruits of herbaceous plants than by the climatic predictors.

Copépodes (Crustacea, Calanoida, Cyclopoida) planctônicos em reservatórios profundos e dendríticos: efeitos do tempo de residência e da idade de formação

Some ecological attributes of planktonic copepods (composition, diversity, abundance and its relations with limnological variables) were compared in two deep and dendritic reservoirs, 470km from each other, with contrasting water retention time (WRT) and ages of construction. Data were grouped from two different studies: samples were collected monthly between March/00 to February/01, on the Salto Caxias Reservoir (Iguaçu River), and tri-monthly between January/00 to October/01, on the Chavantes Reservoir (Paranapanema River). Eight species of Calanoida and six of Cyclopoida were identified in both reservoirs. The highest richness was observed in Salto Caxias (12 taxa) when compared with Chavantes (8 taxa), and six species were exclusive to Salto Caxias and two from Chavantes. Salto Caxias was studied one year after the construction, consequently with higher nutrients values in this period and showed generally high mean values of Copepoda (nauplius, copepodits and adults) than Chavantes, which is 38 years old. Some parameters as transparency, conductivity, turbidity and total nitrogen were significantly related with copepod abundance. New formation and sufficient long WRT could be an important cause for the highest richness of Calanoida and total abundance of individuals in Salto Caxias Reservoir.
