Top-quark pair production in association with two b-jets is computed at next-to-leading order QCD precision, including effects of the b-quark mass, and matched to a tt¯\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ t\\overline{t} $$\\end{document}+jets simulation in a variable flavor number scheme. The Monte Carlo realization of this method, called fusing, consistently embeds the four-flavor calculation in a particle-level event generator. As a first phenomenological application, we present observables relevant to the data-driven estimation of irreducible backgrounds to tt¯H\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ t\\overline{t}H $$\\end{document}-production.

Associated production of a top-quark pair with two isolated photons at the LHC through NLO in QCD

We report on the computation of NLO QCD corrections to top-quark pair production in association with two photons at the LHC. Higher-order effects and photon bremsstrahlung are taken into account in the production and decays of the top-quark pair. Top-quark and W-boson decays are treated in the Narrow Width Approximation conserving spin correlations up to NLO in QCD. This is the first time that the complete set of NLO QCD corrections to the ppto toverline{t}gamma gamma process including top-quark decays is calculated. We present results at the integrated and differential cross-section level in the di-lepton and lepton + jet channel. In addition, we investigate the effect of photon bremsstrahlung in toverline{t} production and top-quark decays, as well as the mixed contribution. The latter contribution, in which two photons occur simultaneously in the production and decay of the toverline{t} pair, proved to be significant at both the integrated and differential cross-section level.

Measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair production in association with a photon with the ATLAS experiment

A measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair (tt¯) production in association with a photon is presented. The measurement is performed in the single-lepton tt¯ decay channel using proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN at a centre-of-mass-energy of 13 TeV during the years 2015–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. The charge asymmetry is obtained from the distribution of the difference of the absolute rapidities of the top quark and antiquark using a profile likelihood unfolding approach. It is measured to be AC=−0.003±0.029 in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Two-loop master integrals for a planar topology contributing to pp → toverline{t}j

We consider the case of a two-loop five-point pentagon-box integral configuration with one internal massive propagator that contributes to top-quark pair production in association with a jet at hadron colliders. We construct the system of differential equations for all the master integrals in a canonical form where the analytic form is reconstructed from numerical evaluations over finite fields. We find that the system can be represented as a sum of d-logarithmic forms using an alphabet of 71 letters. Using high precision boundary values obtained via the auxiliary mass flow method, a numerical solution to the master integrals is provided using generalised power series expansions.

Recent Cross-Section Measurements of Top-Quark Pair Production in Association with Gauge Bosons

This article reviews recent cross-section measurements of tt¯ production in association with a photon, W or Z boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). All measurements reviewed use proton–proton (pp) datasets collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments between 2016 and 2018 from collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during the LHC Run 2. Differential and inclusive cross-section measurements are discussed along with the constraints on the effective field theory operators accessible through each process. Finally, we discuss the potential for measurements of these processes at future colliders.

Measurement of the top-quark mass in toverline{t} + 1-jet events collected with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV

A determination of the top-quark mass is presented using 20.2 fb−1 of 8 TeV proton-proton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider and collected by the ATLAS experiment. The normalised differential cross section of top-quark pair production in association with an energetic jet is measured in the lepton+jets final state and unfolded to parton and particle levels. The unfolded distribution at parton level can be described using next-to-leading-order QCD predictions in terms of either the top-quark pole mass or the running mass as defined in the (modified) minimal subtraction scheme. A comparison between the experimental distribution and the theoretical prediction allows the top-quark mass to be extracted in the two schemes. Search for four-top-quark production in the single-lepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states in pp collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for four-top-quark production, $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$, is presented. It is based on proton-proton collision data with a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during the year 2015 and 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $36.1$ fb$^{-1}$. Data are analyzed in both the single-lepton and opposite-sign dilepton channels, characterized by the presence of one or two isolated electrons or muons with high-transverse momentum and multiple jets. A data-driven method is used to estimate the dominant background from top-quark pair production in association with jets. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. The result is combined with the previous same-sign dilepton and multilepton searches carried out by ATLAS and an observed (expected) upper limit of 5.3 (2.1) times the four-top-quark Standard Model cross section is obtained at 95% confidence level. Additionally, upper limit on anomalous four-top-quark production cross section is set in the context of an effective field theory model.

Extracting the top-quark running mass using tbar{t} + hbox {1-jet} events produced at the Large Hadron Collider

We present the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections for top-quark pair production in association with an additional jet at hadron colliders, using the modified minimal subtraction scheme to renormalize the top-quark mass. The results are compared to measurements at the Large Hadron Collider run I. In particular, we determine the top-quark running mass from a fit of the theoretical results presented here to the LHC data.

Measurements of [formula omitted] using the ATLAS detector

The large centre-of-mass energy available at the LHC proton-proton collider allows for copious production of top-quark pairs in association with other final state particles at high transverse momentum. Results on the top-quark pair production in association with W and Z bosons at both 8 and 13 TeV are presented as well as the measurement of the cross section for production with an associated isolated photon at 7 TeV. The ATLAS experiment has measured several final state observables that are sensitive to additional radiation in top anti-top quark final states. Analyses probing the top-quark pair production with additional QCD radiation include the multiplicity of jets for various transverse momentum thresholds in the 13 TeV data. These measurements are compared to some of the most recent Monte Carlo event generators based on NLO QCD or LO multi-leg matrix element calculations.

Determination of the top-quark pole mass using t t ¯ $$ t\overline{t} $$ + 1-jet events collected with the ATLAS experiment in 7 TeV pp collisions

The normalized differential cross section for top-quark pair production in association with at least one jet is studied as a function of the inverse of the invariant mass of the $t \bar{t}+1$-jet system. This distribution can be used for a precise determination of the top-quark mass since gluon radiation depends on the mass of the quarks. The experimental analysis is based on proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$. The selected events were identified using the lepton+jets top-quark-pair decay channel, where lepton refers to either an electron or a muon. The observed distribution is compared to a theoretical prediction at next-to-leading-order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics using the pole-mass scheme. With this method, the measured value of the top-quark pole mass, $m_t^{\rm pole}$, is: $m_t^{\rm pole}$ =173.7 $\pm$ 1.5 (stat.) $\pm$ 1.4 (syst.) $^{+ 1.0}_{-0.5}$ (theory) GeV. This result represents the most precise measurement of the top-quark pole mass to date.

Study of the top-quark pair production in association with a bottom-quark pair from fast simulations at the LHC

A large number of top quarks will be produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for Run II period. This will allow us to measure the rare processes from the top sector in great details. We present the study of the top-quark pair production in association with a bottom-quark pair (ttbb) from fast simulations for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The differential distributions of ttbb are compared with the top-quark pair production with two additional jets (ttjj) and with the production in association with the Higgs (ttH), where the Higgs decays to a bottom-quark pair. The significances of ttbb process in the dileptonic and semileptonic decay mode are calculated with the data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10 fb-1, which is foreseen to be collected in the early Run II period. This study will be an important input in searching for new physics beyond the standard model as well as in searching for ttH process where the Yukawa coupling with the top quark can be directly measured.

Observation of top-quark pair production in association with a photon and measurement of thett¯γproduction cross section inppcollisions ats=7TeV using the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for top-quark pairs ($t\bar{t}$) produced together with a photon ($\gamma$) with transverse energy greater than 20 GeV using a sample of $t\bar{t}$ candidate events in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.59 $fb^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In total 140 and 222 $t\bar{t}\gamma$ candidate events are observed in the electron and muon channels, to be compared to the expectation of $79\pm 26$ and $120\pm 39$ non-$t\bar{t}\gamma$ background events respectively. The production of $t\bar{t}\gamma$ events is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations away from the null hypothesis. The $t\bar{t}\gamma$ production cross section times the branching ratio (BR) of the single-lepton decay channel is measured in a fiducial kinematic region within the ATLAS acceptance. The measured value is $\sigma_{t\bar{t}\gamma}^{fid} = 63 \pm 8 (stat.) ^{+17}_{-13} (syst.) \pm 1 (lumi.)$ per lepton flavor, in good agreement with the leading-order theoretical calculation normalized to the next-to-leading-order theoretical prediction of $48\pm 10$ fb.

Top-quark charge asymmetry goes forward: two new observables for hadron colliders

We propose two new observables to measure the charge asymmetry in hadronic top-quark pair production in association with a hard jet. The incline asymmetry, based on the inclination between the planes of initial- and final-state momenta, probes the charge asymmetry in the quark-antiquark channel. Compared to the hitherto investigated rapidity asymmetries, the incline asymmetry provides improved access to the partonic charge asymmetry at both the Tevatron and the LHC. The energy asymmetry, based on the energy difference between top and antitop quarks, for the first time allows us to probe the charge asymmetry in the quark-gluon channel at the LHC. In quantum chromodynamics, asymmetries of up to -12% at the leading order are achievable with appropriate cuts. Top-pair plus jet production thus has the potential to become the discovery channel of the charge asymmetry in proton-proton collisions.

Hadronic top-quark pair production in association with two jets at next-to-leading order QCD

We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of ttbar pairs in association with two hard jets at the Fermilab TeVatron and CERN Large Hadron Collider. Results for the integrated and differential cross sections are given. The corrections with respect to leading order are negative and moderate. A study of the scale dependence of our NLO predictions indicates that the residual theoretical uncertainty, due to higher order corrections, is 21% for the TeVatron and 15% for the LHC. In case of the TeVatron, the forward-backward asymmetry of the top quark is calculated for the first time at next-to-leading order. With the inclusive selection of cuts, this asymmetry amounts to A_FB = -10.3% at leading order and A_FB = -4.6% at next-to-leading order. All results presented in this paper have been obtained with the help of the HELAC-NLO package.

QCD corrections to associated production oftt¯γat hadron colliders

We report on the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD computation of top-quark pair production in association with a photon at the Fermilab Tevatron RUN II and CERN Large Hadron Collider. We describe the impact of the complete NLO QCD radiative corrections to this process, and provide the predictions of the leading order (LO) and NLO integrated cross sections, distributions of the transverse momenta of the top quark and photon for the LHC and Tevatron, and the LO and NLO forward-backward top-quark charge asymmetries for the Tevatron. We investigate the dependence of the LO and NLO cross sections on the renormalization/factorization scale, and find the scale dependence of the LO cross section is obviously improved by the NLO QCD corrections. The $K$-factor of the NLO QCD correction is 0.977(1.524) for the Tevatron (LHC).

Hadronic top-quark pair production in association with a hard jet at next-to-leading order QCD: phenomenological studies for the Tevatron and the LHC

We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of top–antitop-quark pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and at the LHC. Results for integrated and differential cross sections are presented. We find a significant reduction of the scale dependence. In most cases the corrections are below 20% indicating that the perturbative expansion is well under control. Moreover, the forward–backward charge asymmetry of the top quark, which is analyzed at the Tevatron, is studied at next-to-leading order. We find large corrections, suggesting that the definition of the observable has to be refined.
