The Relationship between Story Comprehension, Story Grammar Production, and Executive Function in Preschool-Age Korean-English Bilingual Children with and without Vocabulary Delay

Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between story comprehension and story grammar abilities, as well as executive function in preschool Korean-English bilingual children with vocabulary delay (VD) compared to typically developing (TD) children and examined predictors of their narrative abilities. Methods: A total of 30 children (13 children with VD, 17 TD children) aged from 4-6 years participated in the study. Children performed non-word repetition (NWR) and word list recall for verbal working memory, matrix for non-verbal working memory, fruit stroop for inhibition, and Dimensional Change Card Sort (DCCS) for shifting. They also performed story comprehension and story grammar production tasks in both languages to assess their narrative abilities. For data analyses, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression were conducted. Results: The VD group showed significantly lower performance in working memory, inhibition, shifting tasks. Moreover, VD group had significantly lower performance in story comprehension and story grammar production tasks in both languages. In the TD group, Korean story comprehension performance was correlated with English story comprehension, Korean story grammar production, English story grammar production performances. On the other hand, in the VD group, only Korean story comprehension showed a significant correlation with Korean story grammar production performance. Lastly, matrix significantly predicted English story comprehension abilities and word list recall significantly predicted Korean story grammar production abilities in the TD group. Conclusion: By examining the relationship between children’s ability to understand stories, produce story grammar and sub-factors of executive function, we can improve the narrative education and intervention for bilingual children’s literacy and academic achievement in the future.

Cortical grey matter volume differences in children with developmental coordination disorder compared to typically developing children.

The cause of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is unknown, but neuroimaging evidence suggests that DCD may be related to altered brain development. Children with DCD show less structural and functional connectivity compared to typically developing (TD) children, but few studies have examined cortical volume in children with DCD. The purpose of this study was to investigate cortical grey matter volume using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in children with DCD compared to TD children. This cross-sectional study was part of a larger randomized-controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT02597751) that involved various MRI scans of children with/without DCD. This paper focuses on the anatomical scans, performing VBM of cortical grey matter volume in 30 children with DCD and 12 TD children. Preprocessing and VBM data analysis were conducted using the Computational Anatomy Tool Box-12 and a study-specific brain template. Differences between DCD and TD groups were assessed using a one-way ANOVA, controlling for total intracranial volume. Regression analyses examined if motor and/or attentional difficulties predicted grey matter volume. We used threshold-free cluster enhancement (5,000 permutations) and set an alpha level of 0.05. Due to the small sample size, we did not correct for multiple comparisons. Compared to the TD group, children with DCD had significantly greater grey matter in the left superior frontal gyrus. Lower motor scores (meaning greater impairment) were related to greater grey matter volume in left superior frontal gyrus, frontal pole, and right middle frontal gyrus. Greater grey matter volume was also significantly correlated with higher scores on the Conners 3 ADHD Index in the left superior frontal gyrus, superior parietal lobe, and precuneus. These results indicate that greater grey matter volume in these regions is associated with poorer motor and attentional skills. Greater grey matter volume in the left superior frontal gyrus in children with DCD may be a result of delayed or absent healthy cortical thinning, potentially due to altered synaptic pruning as seen in other neurodevelopmental disorders. These findings provide further support for the hypothesis that DCD is related to altered brain development.

P009 Time spent with SpO2 below 90% during Sleep is Greater in Children with Down syndrome and OSA than in Typically Developing Children

Abstract Background Children with Down syndrome (DS) have a higher predisposition to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) compared to typically developing (TD) children. Children with DS have more frequent dips <90% compared with TD children matched for age, sex and OSA severity. Intermittent hypoxia with repeated desaturations and resaturations is associated with cognitive impairment in children. New methods which calculate the time spent with SpO2 <90% have identified an association with cardiac dysfunction in adults with OSA. We aimed to determine if children with DS and OSA spent longer with SpO2 <90% during sleep compared with TD children. Methods 44 children with DS (3-19 y) and age, sex and OSA severity matched TD children underwent overnight polysomnography. Time spent with SpO2 <90% as a percentage of total sleep time (%TST) was calculated. SpO2 nadir when <90% was recorded. Results SpO2 fell <90% in 32 (73%) children with DS and 15 (34%) TD children. The %TST spent with SpO2 <90% was higher in the DS group (median [IQR] 0.029% [0.004, 0.114]) compared with the TD group (0.000% [0.000, 0.020]; p<0.001). There was no difference in SpO2 nadir between the groups (DS mean±sem 84%±1.1%; TD 85%±1.1) when the SpO2 fell <90%. Conclusion Twice as many children with DS experienced periods of oxygen desaturation below 90% as did TD children matched for age, sex and OSA severity. Although as a %TST, the time spent <90% was small, different physiologically-based metrics to characterise OSA severity and the consequences of recurrent hypoxia in children may be merited.

Age differences and brain maturation provide insight into heterogeneous results in autism spectrum disorder.

Studies comparing individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to typically developing (TD) individuals have yielded inconsistent results. These inconsistencies reflect, in part, atypical trajectories of development in children and young adults with ASD compared to TD peers. These different trajectories alter group differences between children with and without ASD as they age. This paper first summarizes the disparate trajectories evident in our studies and, upon further investigation, laboratories using the same recruiting source. These studies indicated that cognition improves into adulthood typically, and is associated with the maturation of striatal, frontal, and temporal lobes, but these age-related improvements did not emerge in the young adults with ASD. This pattern - of improvement into adulthood in the TD group but not in the group with ASD - occurred in both social and non-social tasks. However, the difference between TD and ASD trajectories was most robust on a social task, face recognition. While tempting to ascribe this uneven deficit to the social differences in ASD, it may also reflect the prolonged typical development of social cognitive tasks such as face recognition into adulthood. This paper then reviews the evidence on age-related and developmental changes from other studies on ASD. The broader literature also suggests that individuals with ASD do not exhibit the typical improvements during adolescence on skills important for navigating the transition to adulthood. These skills include execution function, social cognition and communication, and emotional recognition and self-awareness. Relatedly, neuroimaging studies indicate arrested or atypical brain maturation in striatal, frontal, and temporal regions during adolescence in ASD. This review not only highlights the importance of a developmental framework and explicit consideration of age and/or stage when studying ASD, but also the potential importance of adolescence on outcomes in ASD.

Short report: Self-compassion and satisfaction with life in Danish adolescents with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD): `We are all in the same boat´

BackgroundAdolescents with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) are at risk of emotional health problems and low self-esteem. However, little is known about their self-compassion (SC) and satisfaction with life (SWL). The present study compared self-compassion and satisfaction with life reported by Danish adolescents with DLD compared to typically developing (TD) peers, and whether severity of language difficulty is associated with SC and SWL. MethodsResults were obtained from 10 Danish adolescents with DLD compared with 14 age-matched TD adolescents and 132 TD peers, aged 15 years. ResultsFor SC and SWL results showed that adolescents with DLD reported more positive feelings compared to the TD adolescents. Interestingly for SC, the negative, but not the positive, domain differentiated the two groups, as adolescents with DLD reported less symptoms on self-judgment, isolation and overidentification. SC and SWL was strongly correlated with language abilities for the DLD group, but not for the TD group. ConclusionsResults from our pilot study showed that Danish adolescents with DLD reported being less harsh on themselves. Language abilities were associated with self-compassion for the DLD, but not for the TD group. Whether these group differences are due to environmental factors such as the specific Danish school setting of the DLD group or internal factors are discussed and requires further research.

Functional connectivity changes during working memory in autism spectrum disorder: A two-year longitudinal MEG study

Working memory impairments have been reported in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and associated with functional outcomes and social difficulties. However, little is known about the developmental trajectory of working memory in youth with ASD. The current magnetoencephalography (MEG) study is the first to examine the longitudinal development over two years of working memory networks in youth with ASD. We analysed MEG data from 32 children and adolescents with and without ASD (64 datasets; 7–14 years), all tested twice at a two-year interval, during a visual n-back task, with two loads (1- and 2-back). We performed a whole-brain functional connectivity analysis to examine the networks during the successful recognition of visual stimuli. We demonstrate that youth with ASD show decreased connectivity in the theta frequency (4–7 Hz) in the higher memory load (2-back) condition compared to typically developing (TD) controls. This hypo-connected theta network was anchored in primary visual areas with connections to frontal, parietal and limbic regions. These network differences were found despite similar task performance between ASD and TD groups. Within the TD group, we found an increase in alpha (8–14 Hz) connectivity at Time 2 compared to Time 1 in both the 1- and 2-back conditions. These findings demonstrate the continued development of working memory mechanisms over middle childhood, which were not apparent in youth with ASD. Together, our findings support a network-based approach to understanding atypical neural functioning in ASD and the developmental trajectories of working memory processes over middle childhood.

Exploring developmental trajectories throughout adolescence of children with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability.

Characterizing the developmental trajectories of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) throughout adolescence and across different domains of functioning offers opportunities to improve long-term outcomes. This prospective study explored, for the first time, the evolution of children with ASD-without intellectual disability (ID) in terms of socio-adaptative skills, learning behaviors, executive functioning (EF), and internalizing/externalizing problems, compared to typically developing (TD) peers. Forty-five children with ASD-without ID and 37 matched TD children (aged 7-11) were assessed at baseline and after 5 years. Parents and teachers completed measures on theory of mind (ToM), socialization, daily living skills, learning style, EF, and emotional/behavioural difficulties at both time points. On all the domains assessed, the ASD group performed significantly worse than the TD group, both in childhood and adolescence. Specific changes were noted between baseline and follow-up assessment on adaptive skills, prosocial behavior, emotional control, inhibit, working memory and monitoring. Group membership (ASD/TD) was influenced by peer relationships and inhibit EF variables. These findings have implications for clinical and school settings.

Shotgun Metagenomics Study Suggests Alteration in Sulfur Metabolism and Oxidative Stress in Children with Autism and Improvement after Microbiota Transfer Therapy

Links between gut microbiota and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been explored in many studies using 16S rRNA gene amplicon and shotgun sequencing. Based on these links, microbiome therapies have been proposed to improve gastrointestinal (GI) and ASD symptoms in ASD individuals. Previously, our open-label microbiota transfer therapy (MTT) study provided insight into the changes in the gut microbial community of children with ASD after MTT and showed significant and long-term improvement in ASD and GI symptoms. Using samples from the same study, the objective of this work was to perform a deeper taxonomic and functional analysis applying shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Taxonomic analyses revealed that ASD Baseline had many bacteria at lower relative abundances, and their abundance increased after MTT. The relative abundance of fiber consuming and beneficial microbes including Prevotella (P. dentalis, P. enoeca, P. oris, P. meloninogenica), Bifidobacterium bifidum, and a sulfur reducer Desulfovibrio piger increased after MTT-10wks in children with ASD compared to Baseline (consistent at genus level with the previous 16S rRNA gene study). Metabolic pathway analysis at Baseline compared to typically developing (TD) children found an altered abundance of many functional genes but, after MTT, they became similar to TD or donors. Important functional genes that changed included: genes encoding enzymes involved in folate biosynthesis, sulfur metabolism and oxidative stress. These results show that MTT treatment not only changed the relative abundance of important genes involved in metabolic pathways, but also seemed to bring them to a similar level to the TD controls. However, at a two-year follow-up, the microbiota and microbial genes shifted into a new state, distinct from their levels at Baseline and distinct from the TD group. Our current findings suggest that microbes from MTT lead to initial improvement in the metabolic profile of children with ASD, and major additional changes at two years post-treatment. In the future, larger cohort studies, mechanistic in vitro experiments and metatranscriptomics studies are recommended to better understand the role of these specific microbes, functional gene expression, and metabolites relevant to ASD.

Egyptian vowel second formant in isolation and in transition following high-frequency fricatives by NLFC hearing aid in children: how does the pattern compare to typically hearing peers?

BackgroundHigh-frequency consonants form an area of difficulty among children with hearing impairment. Many technological setups have emerged in order to improve their audibility, among them nonlinear frequency compression (NLFC). Therefore, the following study was carried out in order to evaluate change in production of high-frequency fricatives by hearing-impaired children utilizing NLFC hearing aids. This was through spectrographic analysis of F2 onset of transition elicited by fricatives in a prevocalic context, and results were compared to typically developing (TD) children. A change in mid-frequency sounds due to high-frequency compression was also tested through production of sustained vowels in isolation.ResultsA preliminary prospective case-control study involved 9 patients with NLFC hearing aids, evaluated at 1- and at 6-month post-fitting, without receiving speech therapy. Spectrographic analysis of F2 formant onset in [a] and [i] vowels when combined with [s] and [f] fricatives in a CV (consonant-vowel) pattern, presented auditorily and audio-visually, was observed and analyzed. One patient was excluded due to noncompliance in attendance. In the 8 patients who completed the study, very high-frequency level of F2 onset in CV was notable in second versus first evaluation in NLFC group, to the extent of surpassing the typical value in TD control group with [i] vowel. Contrastingly, F2 of sustained vowels in isolation took a trend of a lower value after 6 months of NLFC hearing aid use, as compared to the first evaluation. Consequently, the gap between sustained vowel F2 level in TD and NLFC groups widened.ConclusionMean high-frequency range of F2 onset of transition in CV patterns of voiceless fricatives [s] and [f] with [i] and [a] vowels 6 months after NLFC fitting reflects an enhancement in the frequency range production of these sounds. A shift toward a lower F2 frequency range in sustained mid-frequency vowels, on the other hand, remains to be carefully investigated as a sequel of nonlinear frequency compression in the Egyptian hearing-impaired children.

Gait stability in ambulant children with cerebral palsy during dual tasks.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to measure the effect of dual tasks on gait stability in ambulant children with cerebral palsy (CP) compared to typically developing (TD) children. The children of the CP (n = 20) and TD groups (n = 20) walked first without a dual task, then while counting forward and finally while alternatively naming fruits and animals (DTf/a). They then completed the same cognitive exercises while sitting comfortably. We calculated the distance between the foot placement estimator (FPE) and the real foot placement in the anterior direction (DFPEAP) and in the mediolateral direction (DFPEML) as a measure of gait stability, in a gait laboratory using an optoelectronic system. Cognitive scores were computed. Comparisons within and between groups were analysed with linear mixed models. The dual task had a significant effect on the CP group in DFPEAP and DFPEML. The CP group was more affected than the TD group during dual task in the DFPEML. Children in both groups showed significant changes in gait stability during dual tasks. The impact of dual task on gait stability is possibly due to the sharing of attention between gait and the cognitive task. All children favoured a 'posture second' strategy during the dual task of alternatively naming animals and fruits. Children with CP increased their mediolateral stability during dual task.

Are items actively removed from working memory during free time in children with developmental language disorder?

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) have deficits in verbal and non-verbal processing relative to typically developing (TD) peers, potentially reflecting difficulties in working memory, processing speed and inhibition of interference. We examined working memory in children with DLD using the serial-order-in-a-box-complex span (SOB-CS) interference-based model, which posits a time-based mechanism, free time, that governs how interference affects processing performance. (1) To determine the degree to which children with DLD and TD children differ in the amount of free time available during working memory tasks, and whether potential group differences in free time differ depending on the domain of task demands? (2) To determine the relationship between free time and interference effects on working memory accuracy in children with DLD relative to TD peers. We examined the relationship between free time and working memory in children aged 9-13 years with DLD relative to age-matched TD peers. Working memory tasks involved five conditions that varied verbal versus non-verbal task demands in an interference processing phase relative to a recall test phase. Free time was the time between response on the interference processing task and onset of the recall test phase. DLD and TD groups did not differ in total free time in any condition. Results indicated group differences in the relationship between free time and accuracy in the conditions involving verbal recall, but not non-verbal recall. In the verbal-only condition, relatively more free time was associated with worse accuracy for the DLD group, but with better accuracy for the TD group. In the condition with verbal recall paired with non-verbal interference processing, relatively more free time was associated with better accuracy for the DLD group, but not for the TD group. The overall findings suggest that free time between cognitive operations is positively associated with working memory for both verbal and non-verbal recall, except in the presence of high verbal interference for the DLD group (i.e., verbal interference paired with verbal recall). This finding may reflect poor encoding and attention under particularly challenging verbal processing demands for the DLD group. This study also demonstrates the importance of considering the interrelationships between processing speed and interference in working memory performance. What is already known on the subject DLD is characterized by core deficits in verbal processing, but also deficits in non-verbal processing. Processing-based hypotheses of DLD-limited verbal working memory, slowed processing speed and inefficient inhibition-do not fully account for behavioural profiles in DLD when considered separately, yet there is evidence suggesting interrelationships among these factors. What this paper adds to existing knowledge The current study tests the key mechanism posited by a theoretical framework that has the potential to integrate these processing-based hypotheses. Our findings indicate that the effect of this mechanism differed in DLD relative to TD peers in the presence of high verbal task demands. Our findings also demonstrate the importance of considering the interrelationships among cognitive processes in children with DLD. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? In practice, results from the current study suggest that children with DLD may benefit from supplementing verbal information with non-verbal information and from pauses between successive presentations of verbal information. These strategies may support their ability to maintain and act on information during verbal processing.

Emotion recognition in speech and music of Cantonese children with autism spectrum disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder and people with ASD are found to have difficulties in speech communication and social interactions. Previous studies revealed that the performance of autistic children in emotion recognition from music and speech was less accurate compared to typically developing (TD) controls. However, there are few studies on emotion recognition from tonal languages and a direct comparison between speech and music. The current study examined emotion recognition by Cantonese-speaking children with and without ASD aged from 8 to 11. The stimuli for speech perception were recorded by an actor and the clips for music perception were segmented from piano songs, presenting different emotions (angry, happy, sad, fear, and tender). Results showed that ASD group showed a higher accuracy rate in recognizing fear and tender and a lower rate in recognizing angry, happy, and sad in the emotion recognition from speech, though the results did not reach significance. The identification rate from music differed significantly from the TD group, showing a lower accuracy in general. The outcome indicates that Cantonese ASD children may have difficulties in emotion recognition more from music and may have a better judgment on certain negative emotions like fear.

Blood neurofilament light chain and thrombospondin-1 levels of patients with autism spectrum disorder.

Neurofilaments are intermediary filaments associated with neurodegenerative processes. Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) is a biological marker playing a role in synaptogenesis. This study aimed to investigate serum neurofilament light chain (NFL), and TSP1 levels of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared to typically developing (TD) children. Forty-three patients with ASD and forty-five TD children were included. Serum biomarker levels were measured using the sandwich ELISA technique. The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) was implemented to measure the severity of ASD. NFL and TSP1 levels did not differ between study groups (For NFL, ASD = 47.8 ± 11.4 vs. TD = 48.2 ± 15.3 pg/mL, p = 0.785; for TSP1, ASD = 224.4 ± 53.7 vs. TD = 224.7 ± 69.0 ng/mL, p = 0.828). Stereotyped behavior and sensory sensitivity domain of the CARS scale was negatively correlated with serum TSP-1 (r = -0.390, p = 0.010) and NFL (r = -0.377, p = 0.013) levels. Age was also positively correlated with NFL levels (r = 0.332, p = 0.030) in the ASD groups but not in the TD group. Our results did not support the neurodegenerative process of ASD. Future studies are needed to investigate neuroprogression in a longitudinal follow-up.

Development of executive functioning from childhood to young adulthood in autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A 10-year longitudinal study.

This 10-year longitudinal study investigated the developmental trajectories of executive functioning (EF) in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), compared to typically developing (TD) individuals from childhood into young adulthood. There were 173 participants at baseline (T1; ASD = 38 (eight with co-occurring ADHD), ADHD = 85, TD = 50; Mage = 11.7 years, SD = 2.1), 168 at 2-year follow-up (T2) and 127 at 10-year follow-up (T3). Participants were assessed with three neuropsychological tests aimed at capturing central components of EF: working memory/Letter-Number Sequencing Test (LNS), inhibition/Color-Word Interference Test, Condition 3 (CWIT3), and flexibility/Trail Making Test, Condition 4 (TMT4). Test results were analyzed using linear mixed models (LMM). At baseline, the TD participants outperformed the ASD and ADHD participants on all three tests. From T1 to T2, the ASD participants had less improvement than the ADHD and TD participants on the LNS test (p = .007 and .025, respectively), while having more improvement on the CWIT3 relative to the TD participants (p = .027). From T2 to T3, the ADHD participants had less improvement on the LNS test than the ASD and TD participants (p = .004 and .021, respectively). The ASD and ADHD groups mainly displayed similar maturation on the neuropsychological measures, and displayed continuous impairment relative to the TD group. The need for support and facilitation of EF in school, workplace, and social arenas might continue into young adulthood among certain individuals with ASD and ADHD. Comparing the Informativeness of Single-Word Samples and Connected Speech Samples in Assessing Speech Sound Disorders.

Purpose Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are faced with the challenge of quickly and accurately identifying children who present with speech sound disorders (SSD) compared to typically developing (TD) children. The goal of this study was to compare the clinical relevance of two speech sampling methods (single-word vs. connected speech samples) in how sensitive they are in detecting atypical speech sound development in children, and to know whether the information obtained from single-word samples is representative enough of children's overall speech sound performance. Method We compared the speech sound performance of 37 preschool children with SSD (M age = 4;11 years) and 37 age-sex-matched typically developing children (M age = 5;0 years) by eliciting their speech in two ways: (a) a picture-naming task to elicit single words, and (b) a story-retelling task to elicit connected speech. Four speech measures were compared across sample type (single words vs. connected speech) and across groups (SSD vs. TD): intelligibility, speech accuracy, phonemic inventory, and phonological patterns. Results Interaction effects were found between sample type and group on several speech sound performance measures. Single-word speech samples were found to differentiate the SSD group from the TD group, and were more sensitive than connected speech samples across various measures. The effect size of single-word samples was consistently higher than connected speech samples for three measures: intelligibility, speech accuracy, and phonemic inventory. The gap in sample type informativeness may be attributed to salience and avoidance effects, given that children tend to avoid producing unfamiliar phonemes in connected speech. The number of phonological patterns produced was the only measure that revealed no gap between two sampling types for both groups. Conclusions On measures of intelligibility, speech accuracy, and phonemic inventory, obtaining a single-word sample proved to be a more informative method of differentiating children with SSD from TD children than connected speech samples. This finding may guide SLPs in their choice of sampling type when they are under time pressure. We discuss how children's performance on the connected speech sample may be biased by salience and avoidance effects and/or task design, and may, therefore, not necessarily reveal a poorer performance than single-word samples, particularly in intelligibility, speech accuracy, and the number of phonological patterns, if these task limitations are circumvented. Our findings show that the performance gap, typically observed between the two sampling types, largely depends on which performance measures are evaluated with the speech sample. Our study is the first to address sampling type differences in SSD versus TD children and has significant clinical implications for SLPs looking for sampling types and measures that reliably identify SSD in preschool-aged children.

Sleep-disordered breathing and sleep macro- and micro-architecture in children with Down syndrome.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at increased risk of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which is associated with intermittent hypoxia and sleep disruption affecting daytime functioning. We aimed to compare the impact of SDB on sleep quality in children with DS compared to typically developing (TD) children with and without SDB. Children with DS and SDB (n = 44) were age- and sex-matched with TD children without SDB (TD-) and also for SDB severity with TD children with SDB (TD+). Children underwent overnight polysomnography with sleep macro- and micro-architecture assessed using electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral analysis, including slow-wave activity (SWA, an indicator of sleep propensity). Children with DS had greater hypoxic exposure, more respiratory events during REM sleep, higher total, delta, sigma, and beta EEG power in REM than TD+ children, despite the same overall frequency of obstructive events. Compared to TD- children, they also had more wake after sleep-onset and lower sigma power in N2 and N3. The DS group had reduced SWA, indicating reduced sleep drive, compared to both TD groups. Our findings suggest that SDB has a greater impact on sleep quality in children with DS compared to TD children. SDB in children with DS exacerbates disruption of sleep quality, compared to TD children. The prevalence of SDB is very high in children with DS; however, studies on the effects of SDB on sleep quality are limited in this population. Our findings suggest that SDB has a greater impact on sleep quality in children with DS compared to TD children, and should be screened for and treated as soon as possible.

Attention Bias and Prodromal Anxiety Symptoms in Toddlers With Fragile X Syndrome and Down Syndrome.

Early identification of behavioral risk markers for anxiety is essential to optimize long-term outcomes in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. This study analyzed attentional avoidance and its relation to anxiety and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptomatology during social and nonsocial fear conditions in toddlers with fragile X syndrome (FXS) and Down syndrome (DS). Toddlers with FXS and DS exhibited increased nonsocial attentional avoidance relative to typically developing (TD) toddlers. Attentional avoidance was not related to anxiety symptom severity in any group; however, higher ASD symptom severity was related to more social attentional avoidance in the FXS and TD groups. Findings suggest that there may be different underlying mechanisms driving attentional avoidance across neurodevelopmental disorders.

Meta-analysis on inhibition from childhood to young adulthood in people with Down syndrome

BackgroundFew studies have investigated inhibition in people with Down syndrome (DS), indicating contradictory results. AimThis meta-analysis investigated if people with DS show more severe difficulties on inhibition, compared to typically developing (TD) children matched on a measure of mental age (MA). Methods and proceduresLiterature search included studies conducted before March 2019, combining the following keywords: “Down syndrome” with “Inhibition”, “Interference control”, “Effortful control”, “Impulsivity”, “Self-regulation”, and “Executive functions”. Descriptive information was coded, according to inclusions criteria. Meta-analysis of standardized differences between DS and TD groups’ means was performed. Relevant moderators were also considered. Outcomes and resultsEight studies were included in the meta-analysis, including 161 people with DS and 160 TD children. The results indicated that people with DS showed significantly lower inhibition abilities when they are matched on MA with TD children, instead no significant differences emerged when this matching was not provided. A high heterogeneity across studies was estimated. Conclusions and implicationsThis meta-analysis indicates that people with DS show, on average, an inhibition deficit compared to TD matched children, albeit not a severe one. These results suggest the importance of investigating in depth inhibition processes in people with DS from childhood to young adulthood.

Does level of motor competence affect the associations between identity health and self-perceptions in adolescents?

Adolescence is a particularly important time for the development of self-perceptions and identity as many environmental and personal factors are influential. One relatively unexplored factor is level of motor competence. To examine the relationship between identity health and self-perceptions in male and female adolescents with low motor competence (LMC) compared to typically developing (TD) adolescents. Adolescents (N=160, 64.4% males, Mage=14.45yrs., SD=0.75) completed the Adolescent Motor Competence Questionnaire (AMCQ), Assessment of Identity Development in Adolescence (AIDA), and Harter's Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA). Based on the AMCQ score, the sample was grouped into LMC and TD. Pearson's product moment correlations between the AIDA and SPPA subscales were derived for gender, competence groups, and gender x competence sub-groups. Overall, males had lower AIDA scores (healthier identity) than the females and significant associations with all self-perception domains. For females, only scholastic and social competence, physical appearance, behavioural conduct, close friendship and Global Self-worth (GSW) domains were significantly related to their AIDA score. The adolescents in the LMC group had higher AIDA scores (less-healthier identity) and fewer self-perception domains [scholastic competence, physical appearance, behavioural conduct, close friendships and GSW] were associated to their AIDA scores. For the TD group, all self-perception domains were significantly correlated with their AIDA scores. When grouped by gender and motor competence, the TD males had the healthiest identity scores which were strongly associated with all self-perception subdomains. For males with LMC, only scholastic competence, behavioural conduct and GSW domains were significantly related with their identity score. Females from both competence groups reported significant associations between physical appearance, close friendships, behavioural conduct, and social competence domains with their identity scores. Scholastic competence was also significantly associated with identity only for females with LMC. Positive self-perceptions across a range of domains are associated with a healthier identity, but differ according to level of motor competence and gender. For those with LMC, the self-perception subdomains unrelated to physical activity and sport, such as school-based aspects were associated with a healthier identity. These findings should guide school based interventions to provide support in these domains in order to strengthen self-worth and identity health.

An investigation of the effect of social reciprocity, social anxiety, and letter fluency on communicative behaviors in adults with autism spectrum disorder

In recent years, research focusing on childhood has reported that communication difficulties in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are related to the social reciprocity difficulties inherent to ASD, as well as severe social anxiety and decreased verbal fluency. However, there have been no reports regarding these correlations and causal relationships in adulthood. The aim of this study was to reveal the effects of social reciprocity, social anxiety, and letter fluency on communicative behaviors in adults with ASD (n = 33, aged 18–43 years, mean age = 27.88 years) and to compare these to typically developing (TD) adults (n = 35, 19–40 years, mean age = 28.03 years). We validated a model using structural equation modeling in which social reciprocity not only directly affected communicative behaviors, but also indirectly affected communicative behaviors mediated by social anxiety and verbal fluency. The results of the structural equation modeling showed that communicative behaviors patterns differed between the ASD and TD groups, as the ASD group had high goodness of fit with the hypothesis model while the TD group had low goodness of fit. These findings signify that in ASD, in addition to problems in social reciprocity, social anxiety (fear) is a risk factor for worsening communicative behaviors difficulties.
