Engineering bi-layered skin-like nanopads with electrospun nanofibers and chitosan films for promoting fibroblast infiltration in tissue regeneration and wound healing

This study presents an innovative bi-layered three-dimensional skin-like nanopad (SLN) engineered for skin tissue regeneration. The SLN integrates a mechanically supportive polycaprolactone nanofibrous layer with a functional chitosan hydrogel film, mimicking natural skin. Our SLN exhibits superior flexibility, with a maximum elongation of 751.71 ± 125 % and exceptional porosity of 95 ± 4.5 %, ensuring effective exudate management due to its high water uptake capacity (4393 ± 72 %). FTIR analysis confirmed a distinctive fiber-hydrogel network within the SLN, which serves as a barrier against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infiltration. In vitro cell viability assays with the human fibroblast have consistently demonstrated that 3D bi-layered SLN enhances fibroblast attachment, infiltration, and proliferation by 150 ± 20 %. In vivo studies in a rat model demonstrated significantly faster wound closure, with 60 % on day 7 and 87 % on day 10, compared to the 30 % and 60 % in controls, highlighting the efficacy of SLN. By mimicking the architecture of native skin, this biomimetic bi-layered SLN scaffold provides flexibility and support while accelerating in vivo wound closure by promoting fibroblast proliferation and infiltration. Customizable in size, depth, and shape, the engineered SLN has emerged as a promising platform for advanced wound care and tissue engineering.

Cofunctionalization of Macroporous Dextran Hydrogels with Adhesive Peptides and Growth Factors Enables Vascular Spheroid Sprouting.

Ensuring good definition of scaffolds used for 3D cell culture is a prominent challenge that hampers the development of tissue engineering platforms. Since dextran repels cell adhesion, using dextran-based materials biofunctionalized through a bottom-up approach allows for precise control over material definition. Here, we report the design of dextran hydrogels displaying a fully interconnected macropore network for the culture of vascular spheroids in vitro. We biofunctionalized the hydrogels with the RGD peptide sequence to promote cell adhesion. We used an affinity peptide pair, the E/K coiled coil, to load the gels with epidermal growth factor (EGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Dual functionalization with adhesive and proliferative cues allows vascular spheroids to colonize naturally cell-repellant dextran. In supplement-depleted medium, we report improved colonization of the macropores compared to that of unmodified dextran. Altogether, we propose a well-defined and highly versatile platform for tissue engineering and tissue vascularization applications.

An ultrathin membrane mediates tissue-specific morphogenesis and barrier function in a human kidney chip.

Organ-on-chip (OOC) systems are revolutionizing tissue engineering by providing dynamic models of tissue structure, organ-level function, and disease phenotypes using human cells. However, nonbiological components of OOC devices often limit the recapitulation of in vivo-like tissue-tissue cross-talk and morphogenesis. Here, we engineered a kidney glomerulus-on-a-chip that recapitulates glomerular morphogenesis and barrier function using a biomimetic ultrathin membrane and human-induced pluripotent stem cells. The resulting chip comprised a proximate epithelial-endothelial tissue interface, which reconstituted the selective molecular filtration function of healthy and diseased kidneys. In addition, fenestrated endothelium was successfully induced from human pluripotent stem cells in an OOC device, through in vivo-like paracrine signaling across the ultrathin membrane. Thus, this device provides a dynamic tissue engineering platform for modeling human kidney-specific morphogenesis and function, enabling mechanistic studies of stem cell differentiation, organ physiology, and pathophysiology.

Modeling of Magnetic Scaffolds as Drug Delivery Platforms for Tissue Engineering and Cancer Therapy.

Magnetic scaffolds (MagSs) are magneto-responsive devices obtained by the combination of traditional biomaterials (e.g., polymers, bioceramics, and bioglasses) and magnetic nanoparticles. This work analyzes the literature about MagSs used as drug delivery systems for tissue repair and cancer treatment. These devices can be used as innovative drugs and/or biomolecules delivery systems. Through the application of a static or dynamic stimulus, MagSs can trigger drug release in a controlled and remote way. However, most of MagSs used as drug delivery systems are not optimized and properly modeled, causing a local inhomogeneous distribution of the drug's concentration and burst release. Few physical-mathematical models have been presented to study and analyze different MagSs, with the lack of a systematic vision. In this work, we propose a modeling framework. We modeled the experimental data of drug release from different MagSs, under various magnetic field types, taken from the literature. The data were fitted to a modified Gompertz equation and to the Korsmeyer-Peppas model (KPM). The correlation coefficient (R2) and the root mean square error (RMSE) were the figures of merit used to evaluate the fitting quality. It has been found that the Gompertz model can fit most of the drug delivery cases, with an average RMSE below 0.01 and R2>0.9. This quantitative interpretation of existing experimental data can foster the design and use of MagSs for drug delivery applications.

Current Strategies and Therapeutic Applications of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Based Drug Delivery.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as a promising approach for drug delivery strategies because of their unique properties. These strategies include stem cell membrane-coated nanoparticles, stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles, immunomodulatory effects, stem cell-laden scaffolds, and scaffold-free stem cell sheets. MSCs offer advantages such as low immunogenicity, homing ability, and tumor tropism, making them ideal for targeted drug delivery systems. Stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles have gained attention for their immune properties and tumor-homing abilities, presenting a potential solution for drug delivery challenges. The relationship between MSC-based drug delivery and the self-renewal and differentiation capabilities of MSCs lies in the potential of engineered MSCs to serve as effective carriers for therapeutic agents while maintaining their intrinsic properties. MSCs exhibit potent immunosuppressive functions in MSC-based drug delivery strategies. Stem cell-derived EVs have low immunogenicity and strong therapeutic potential for tissue repair and regeneration. Scaffold-free stem cell sheets represent a cutting-edge approach in regenerative medicine, offering a versatile platform for tissue engineering and regeneration across different medical specialties. MSCs have shown great potential for clinical applications in regenerative medicine because of their ability to differentiate into various cell types, secrete bioactive factors, and modulate immune responses. Researchers are exploring these innovative approaches to enhance drug delivery efficiency and effectiveness in treating various diseases.

Multifunctional platform for future applications in cell and tissue engineering based on silicate phosphate hydroxyapatite co-doped with Li+, Eu3+ and Gd3+ ions

Although hydroxyapatite has established itself as a promising biomaterial for the simultaneous diagnosis and treatment of bone defects, several physicochemical properties can be further refined to achieve a specialized theranostic platform for cell and tissue engineering. In this context, we synthesized silicate-substituted hydroxyapatites co-doped with Li+, Eu3+, and Gd3+ ions (abbr. as Si-HAp-LEG) using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The aim was to create a combination of dopants to stimulate bone regeneration (Li+ ion) while enabling bioimaging (Eu3+ and Gd3+ ions). Structural and morphological assessments included, e.g., XRPD (X-ray Powder Diffraction), HR-TEM (High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy) imaging, and BET (Brauner-Emmet-Teller) analysis. Unit-cell parameters were estimated via Rietveld refinement. The luminescence properties (emission, excitation spectra, and emission kinetics) were recorded depending on the varying Li+-ion concentration. The cytocompatibility of biomaterials was tested using hBMSCs (multipotent human bone-marrow mesenchymal stromal cells). In vitro assays evaluated biomaterials’ effects on morphology, metabolic activity (Alamar blue assay), and transcriptomic activity (RT-qPCR). The results indicate that co-doping with Li+, Eu3+, and Gd3+ ions introduces distortions while preserving the crystal structure of hydroxyapatite. Additionally, the cells maintained proper morphology and ultrastructure, internalizing biomaterials without significant cytotoxicity. The biomaterials also triggered the expression of key transcriptional factors. Si-HAp-LEG biomaterials, particularly LEG-222 and LEG-221, exhibit desired physicochemical and biological features, rendering them highly bioactive and promising for cell and tissue engineering applications.

Orthotopic transplantation of the bioengineered lung using a mouse-scale perfusion-based bioreactor and human primary endothelial cells

Whole lung engineering and the transplantation of its products is an ambitious goal and ultimately a viable solution for alleviating the donor-shortage crisis for lung transplants. There are several limitations currently impeding progress in the field with a major obstacle being efficient revascularization of decellularized scaffolds, which requires an extremely large number of cells when using larger pre-clinical animal models. Here, we developed a simple but effective experimental pulmonary bioengineering platform by utilizing the lung as a scaffold. Revascularization of pulmonary vasculature using human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells was feasible using a novel in-house developed perfusion-based bioreactor. The endothelial lumens formed in the peripheral alveolar area were confirmed using a transmission electron microscope. The quality of engineered lung vasculature was evaluated using box-counting analysis of histological images. The engineered mouse lungs were successfully transplanted into the orthotopic thoracic cavity. The engineered vasculature in the lung scaffold showed blood perfusion after transplantation without significant hemorrhage. The mouse-based lung bioengineering system can be utilized as an efficient ex-vivo screening platform for lung tissue engineering.

Exploring the Transformative Potential of In Situ Gels: An Overview of Thermosensitive and pH‐Sensitive Gel Systems for Biomedical Applications

AbstractIn situ gel systems have emerged as promising drug delivery platforms due to their numerous benefits, including increased patient compliance and decreased administration frequency. The potential of in situ gel extends beyond its formulation benefits, with the ability to transform medical treatment by enhancing drug delivery, offering personalized therapies, and introducing innovative approaches. Ongoing research and the efforts of pharmaceutical companies are dedicated to exploring the vast opportunities presented by in situ gel, pushing the limits of innovation in the field of drug delivery. The selection of suitable polymers is critical for the development of in situ gel formulations. Additionally, consideration of drug‐polymer compatibility ensures the stability and efficacy of the drug within the gel matrix. Formulation considerations play a pivotal role in the development of effective in situ gel systems. They have shown great potential in drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. The ability to prolong gastric retention time, targeted delivery, and localized drug release are among the advantages offered by in situ gels. Although in situ gel technology has shown significant advancements, challenges remain, including stability and shelf‐life issues, biocompatibility and safety concerns, and the need for further research and development. Future directions focus on overcoming these challenges and exploring new applications and advancements in the field. In conclusion, in situ gel systems provide a versatile and promising drug delivery and tissue engineering platform. However, further research and development are essential to address the challenges and fully harness the potential of this innovative technology.

Three-Dimensional-Printed GelMA-KerMA Composite Patches as an Innovative Platform for Potential Tissue Engineering of Tympanic Membrane Perforations.

Tympanic membrane (TM) perforations, primarily induced by middle ear infections, the introduction of foreign objects into the ear, and acoustic trauma, lead to hearing abnormalities and ear infections. We describe the design and fabrication of a novel composite patch containing photocrosslinkable gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and keratin methacryloyl (KerMA) hydrogels. GelMA-KerMA patches containing conical microneedles in their design were developed using the digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing approach. Following this, the patches were biofunctionalized by applying a coaxial coating with PVA nanoparticles loaded with gentamicin (GEN) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) with the Electrohydrodynamic Atomization (EHDA) method. The developed nanoparticle-coated 3D-printed patches were evaluated in terms of their chemical, morphological, mechanical, swelling, and degradation behavior. In addition, the GEN and FGF-2 release profiles, antimicrobial properties, and biocompatibility of the patches were examined in vitro. The morphological assessment verified the successful fabrication and nanoparticle coating of the 3D-printed GelMA-KerMA patches. The outcomes of antibacterial tests demonstrated that GEN@PVA/GelMA-KerMA patches exhibited substantial antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, cell culture studies revealed that GelMA-KerMA patches were biocompatible with human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADMSC) and supported cell attachment and proliferation without any cytotoxicity. These findings indicated that biofunctional 3D-printed GelMA-KerMA patches have the potential to be a promising therapeutic approach for addressing TM perforations.

Versatile human cardiac tissues engineered with perfusable heart extracellular microenvironment for biomedical applications

Engineered human cardiac tissues have been utilized for various biomedical applications, including drug testing, disease modeling, and regenerative medicine. However, the applications of cardiac tissues derived from human pluripotent stem cells are often limited due to their immaturity and lack of functionality. Therefore, in this study, we establish a perfusable culture system based on in vivo-like heart microenvironments to improve human cardiac tissue fabrication. The integrated culture platform of a microfluidic chip and a three-dimensional heart extracellular matrix enhances human cardiac tissue development and their structural and functional maturation. These tissues are comprised of cardiovascular lineage cells, including cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells, as well as vascular endothelial cells. The resultant macroscale human cardiac tissues exhibit improved efficacy in drug testing (small molecules with various levels of arrhythmia risk), disease modeling (Long QT Syndrome and cardiac fibrosis), and regenerative therapy (myocardial infarction treatment). Therefore, our culture system can serve as a highly effective tissue-engineering platform to provide human cardiac tissues for versatile biomedical applications.

Bioprinting of gelatin-based materials for orthopedic application.

Bio-printed hydrogels have evolved as one of the best regenerative medicine and tissue engineering platforms due to their outstanding cell-friendly microenvironment. A correct hydrogel ink formulation is critical for creating desired scaffolds that have better fidelity after printing. Gelatin and its derivatives have sparked intense interest in various biomedical sectors because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, ease of functionalization, and rapid gelling tendency. As a result, this report emphasizes the relevance of gelatin-based hydrogel in fabricating bio-printed scaffolds for orthopedic applications. Starting with what hydrogels and bio-printing are all about. We further summarized the different gelatin-based bio-printing techniques explored for orthopedic applications, including a few recent studies. We also discussed the suitability of gelatin as a biopolymer for both 3D and 4D printing materials. As extrusion is one of the most widely used techniques for bio-printing gelatin-based, we summarize the rheological features of gelatin-based bio-ink. Lastly, we also elaborate on the recent bio-printed gelatin-based studies for orthopedics applications, the potential clinical translation issues, and research possibilities.

Multifunctional MXene-Based Platforms for Soft and Bone Tissue Regeneration and Engineering.

MXenes and their composites hold great promise in the field of soft and bone tissue regeneration and engineering (TRE). However, there are challenges that need to be overcome, such as ensuring biocompatibility and controlling the morphologies of MXene-based scaffolds. The future prospects of MXenes in TRE include enhancing biocompatibility through surface modifications, developing multifunctional constructs, and conducting in vivo studies for clinical translation. The purpose of this perspective about MXenes and their composites in soft and bone TRE is to critically evaluate their potential applications and contributions in this field. This perspective aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the challenges, advantages, limitations, and future prospects associated with the use of MXenes and their composites for soft and bone TRE. By examining the existing literature and research, the review seeks to consolidate the current knowledge and highlight the key findings and advancements in MXene-based TRE. It aims to contribute to the understanding of MXenes' role in promoting soft and bone TRE, addressing the challenges faced in terms of biocompatibility, morphology control, and tissue interactions.

Ion‐Engineered Microcryogels via Osteogenesis‐Angiogenesis Coupling and Inflammation Reversing Augment Vascularized Bone Regeneration

AbstractNative bone inherently requires a balanced ionic microenvironment to maintain bone homeostasis. Hence, scaffolds designed for the sustained release of therapeutic ions into bone defects hold great promise for bone regeneration. Magnesium (Mg) and silicon (Si) are essential elements, which play crucial roles in the process of bone regeneration, impacting immunomodulation, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis. Herein, porous cryogel‐type organic–inorganic composite microspheres are developed as injectable microscaffolds (denoted as GMN). GMN enables sustained release of Mg/Si ions at an optimized ratio, achieving the most significant synergistic effect on vascularized bone regeneration. Various conditioned media are obtained to explore angiogenesis‐osteogenesis coupling, as well as the crosstalk between bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs) and macrophages. Meanwhile, autocrine and paracrine effects simultaneously play synergistic modulating functions in determining cell fates under the guidance of Mg/Si ions and biofactors secreted by cells. Overall, the Mg/Si ion‐engineering microscaffolds create a conducive microenvironment to efficiently augment the regeneration of vascularized bone tissue in vivo, offering a versatile platform for tissue engineering.

A systematic review on green and natural polymeric nanofibers for biomedical applications

Electrospinning is the simplest technique to produce ultrathin nanofibers, which enables the use of nanotechnology in various applications. Nanofibrous materials produced through electrospinning have garnered significant attention in biomedical applications due to their unique properties and versatile potential. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on incorporating sustainability principles into material design and production. However, electrospun nanofibers, owing to their reliance on solvents associated with significant drawbacks like toxicity, flammability, and disposal challenges, frequently fall short of meeting environmentally friendly standards. Due to the limited solvent choices and heightened concerns for safety and hygiene in modern living, it becomes imperative to carefully assess the implications of employing electrospun nanofibers in diverse applications and consumer products. This systematic review aims to comprehensively assess the current state of research and development in the field of “green and natural” electrospun polymer nanofibers as well as more fascinating and eco-friendly commercial techniques, solvent preferences, and other green routes that respect social and legal restrictions tailored for biomedical applications. We explore the utilization of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers sourced from renewable feedstocks, eco-friendly processing techniques, and the evaluation of environmental impacts. Our review highlights the potential of green and natural electrospun nanofibers to address sustainability concerns while meeting the demanding requirements of various biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, and diagnostic platforms. We analyze the advantages, challenges, and future prospects of these materials, offering insights into the evolving landscape of environmentally responsible nanofiber technology in the biomedical field.

Control of Neuronal Survival and Development Using Conductive Diamond.

This study demonstrates the control of neuronal survival and development using nitrogen-doped ultrananocrystalline diamond (N-UNCD). We highlight the role of N-UNCD in regulating neuronal activity via near-infrared illumination, demonstrating the generation of stable photocurrents that enhance neuronal survival and neurite outgrowth and foster a more active, synchronized neuronal network. Whole transcriptome RNA sequencing reveals that diamond substrates improve cellular-substrate interaction by upregulating extracellular matrix and gap junction-related genes. Our findings underscore the potential of conductive diamond as a robust and biocompatible platform for noninvasive and effective neural tissue engineering.

Conductive GelMA/alginate/polypyrrole/graphene hydrogel as a potential scaffold for cardiac tissue engineering; Physiochemical, mechanical, and biological evaluations

Cardiac failure can be a life-threatening condition that, if left untreated, can have significant consequences. Functional hydrogel has emerged as a promising platform for cardiac tissue engineering. In the proposed study, gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and alginate, as a primary matrix to maintain cell viability and proliferation, and polypyrrole and carboxyl-graphene, to improve mechanical and electrical properties, are thoroughly evaluated. Initially, a polymer blend of GelMA/Alginate (1:1) was prepared, and then the addition of 2–5 wt% of polypyrrole was evaluated. Next, the effect of incorporating graphene-carboxyl nanosheets (1, 2, and 3 wt%) within the optimized scaffold with 2 wt% polypyrrole was thoroughly studied. The electrical conductivity of the hydrogels was significantly enhanced from 0.0615 ± 0.007 S/cm in GelMA/alginate to 0.124 ± 0.04 S/cm with the addition of 5 wt% polypyrrole. Also, 3 wt% carboxyl graphene improved the electrical conductivity to 0.27 ± 0.09 S/cm. The compressive strength of carboxyl-graphene-containing hydrogel was in the range of 175 to 520 kPa, and tensile strength was 61 and 133 kPa. The simplicity and low-cost fabrication, tunable mechanical properties, optimal electrical conductivity, blood compatibility, and non-cytotoxicity of GelMA/alginate/polypyrrole/graphene biocomposite hydrogel is a promising construct for cardiac tissue engineering.

Mesenchymal stem cells aligned and stretched in self-assembling peptide hydrogels

The presented research highlights a novel approach using fmoc-protected peptide hydrogels for the encapsulation and stretching of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). This study utilized a custom mechanical stretching device with a PDMS chamber to stretch human MSCs encapsulated in Fmoc hydrogels. The study assessed the influence of various solvents on the self-assembly and mechanical properties of the hydrogels, and MSC viability and alignment. Particularly we focused on fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl-diphenylalanine (Fmoc-FF) prepared in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFP), and deionized water (DiH2O).Through molecular self-assembly of the peptide sequence into β-sheets connected by π-π aromatic stacking of F–F groups, the peptide hydrogel was found to form a stiff, hydrated gel with nanofiber morphology and a compressive modulus ranging from 174 to 277 Pa. Therefore, this hydrogel can mimic certain critical features of the extracellular matrix and collagen. Evaluations of MSCs cultured on the peptide hydrogels, including viability, morphology, and alignment assessments using various staining techniques, demonstrated that 3D-cultured MSCs in Fmoc-FF/HFP and Fmoc-FF/DMSO, followed by mechanical stretching, exhibited elongated morphology with distinct microfilament fibers compared to the control cells, which maintained a round and spherical F-actin shape. Notably, peptide gels with a concentration of 5 mM maintained 100 % MSC viability.The findings indicate the potential and specific conditions for successful cell encapsulation and alignment within peptide hydrogels, highlighting a promising tissue engineering platform through the encapsulation of MSCs in peptide nanofibers followed by a stretching process. By enhancing our understanding of MSC-peptide hydrogel interactions, this research contributes to the development of biomaterials tailored for regenerative medicine.

In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation of 3D Printed Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Dimethacrylate-Based Photocurable Hydrogel Platform for Bone Tissue Engineering.

This study focuses to develop a unique hybrid hydrogel bioink formulation that incorporates poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA), gelatin (Gel), and methylcellulose (MC). This formulation achieves the necessary viscosity for extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) printing of scaffolds intended for bone regeneration. After thorough optimization of the hybrid bioink system with Gel, three distinct scaffold groups are investigated in vitro: 0%, 3%, and 6% (w/v) Gel. These scaffold groups are examined for their morphology, mechanical strength, biodegradation, in vitro cell proliferation and differentiation, and in vivo bone formation using a rat cranial defect model. Among these scaffold compositions, the 3% Gel scaffold exhibits the most favorable characteristics, prompting further evaluation as a rat mesenchymal stem cell (rMSC) carrier in a critical-size cranial defect within a Lewis rat model. The compressive strength of all three scaffold groups range between 1 and 2MPa. Notably, the inclusion of Gel in the scaffolds leads to enhanced bioactivity and cell adhesion. The Gel-containing scaffolds notably amplify osteogenic differentiation, as evidenced by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Western blot analyses. The in vivo results, as depicted by microcomputed tomography, showcase augmented osteogenesis within cell-seeded scaffolds, thus validating this innovative PEGDMA-based scaffold system as a promising candidate for cranial bone defect healing.

Elecrospun nanofibers: The versatile platform as a drug delivery system in healthcare

Nanofibers are fabricated using several polymers, carbon, and semiconductors having cross-sectional diameter less than 100 nm. The exceptional state-of-art 3-D architecture and remarkable physico-chemical characteristics of nanofibers have found versatile applications in various fields. This review provides insights into preparation methods and applications of nanofibers. Nanofibers may be prepared by several methods like electrospinning, self-assembly, phase separation, anti-solvent induced polymer precipitation, etc.; however, electrospinning is the mostly employed technique for nanofibers fabrication. Electrospinning is known to be an electrohydrodynamic process in which a liquid droplet is electrically charged, resulting in the formation of a jet, which is then stretched and elongated to produce fiber(s). The nanofibers have an enormous surface area to volume ratio, resulting in a high percentage of porosity of nanofibrous mats. These characteristics allowed higher drug loading, especially biological macromolecules albeit of their large molecular size. Hence, the nanofibers fetched attention for their application in the healthcare and biomedical engineering sector for the treatment and management of diabetic foot ulcers, cancer, microbiological disorders, wound healing, and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, nanofiber mats possess a 3-D architecture as well as nanofibers can either be oriented randomly or in an ordered fashion for tissue engineering-related drug delivery applications. The above-mentioned peculiarities enables nanofiber scaffolds to mimics human tissues and hence are being explored for their applications in tissue engineering, artificial organ, filtering aids for microbes, cosmeceutical industry, etc. Conclusively, the nanofibers can serve as an excellent drug delivery and tissue-engineering platform for the treatment in healthcare.

Noninvasive and Microinvasive Nanoscale Drug Delivery Platforms for Hard Tissue Engineering.

Bone tissue plays a crucial role in protecting internal organs and providing structural support and locomotion of the body. Treatment of hard tissue defects and medical conditions due to physical injuries, genetic disorders, aging, metabolic syndromes, and infections is more often a complex and drawn out process. Presently, dealing with hard-tissue-based clinical problems is still mostly conducted via surgical interventions. However, advances in nanotechnology over the last decades have led to shifting trends in clinical practice toward noninvasive and microinvasive methods. In this review article, recent advances in the development of nanoscale platforms for bone tissue engineering have been reviewed and critically discussed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of noninvasive and microinvasive methods for treating medical conditions related to hard tissue regeneration and repair.
