Simulation of matrix product states to unveil the initial state dependency of non-Gaussian dynamics of Kerr nonlinearity

We simulate a free dissipative and coherent-driven Kerr nonlinear system using a time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm to study the impact of the initial state on the exact quantum dynamics of the system. The superposition of two coherent branches results in non-classical time dynamics. The Wigner state representation confirms that the system ends up saturating to two different branches, through evolving different trajectories, resulting in de-Gaussification throughout evolution. Furthermore, we also see that the time evolution suffers the residual effect of the initial state.

Riemannian quantum circuit optimization for Hamiltonian simulation

Hamiltonian simulation, i.e. simulating the real time evolution of a target quantum system, is a natural application of quantum computing. Trotter-Suzuki splitting methods can generate corresponding quantum circuits; however, a faithful approximation can lead to relatively deep circuits. Here we start from the insight that for translation invariant systems, the gates in such circuit topologies can be further optimized on classical computers to decrease the circuit depth and/or increase the accuracy. We employ tensor network techniques and devise a method based on the Riemannian trust-region algorithm on the unitary matrix manifold for this purpose. For the Ising and Heisenberg models on a one-dimensional lattice, we achieve orders of magnitude accuracy improvements compared to fourth-order splitting methods. The optimized circuits could also be of practical use for the time-evolving block decimation algorithm.

Simulation of kerr nonlinearity: revealing initial state dependency

We simulate coherent driven free dissipative Kerr nonlinear system numerically using time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm and time propagation on the Heisenberg equation of motion using Euler’s method to study how the numerical results are analogous to classical bistability . The system evolves through different trajectories to stabilize different branches for different external drives and initial conditions. The Wigner state reprentation confirms the system to suffer a residual effect of initial state throughout the non-classical dynamical evolution and the metastable states of the system . Furthermore, we also see the numerically simulated spectral density remains significantly different from analytical counterparts when initial states do not lie to the same branch of the final state.

Two-dimensional isometric tensor networks on an infinite strip

The exact contraction of a generic two-dimensional (2D) tensor network state (TNS) is known to be exponentially hard, making simulation of 2D systems difficult. The recently introduced class of isometric TNS (isoTNS) represents a subset of TNS that allows for efficient simulation of such systems on finite square lattices. The isoTNS ansatz requires the identification of an "orthogonality column" of tensors, within which one-dimensional matrix product state (MPS) methods can be used for calculation of observables and optimization of tensors. Here we extend isoTNS to infinitely long strip geometries and introduce an infinite version of the Moses Move algorithm for moving the orthogonality column around the network. Using this algorithm, we iteratively transform an infinite MPS representation of a 2D quantum state into a strip isoTNS and investigate the entanglement properties of the resulting state. In addition, we demonstrate that the local observables can be evaluated efficiently. Finally, we introduce an infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm (iTEBD\textsuperscript{2}) and use it to approximate the ground state of the 2D transverse field Ising model on lattices of infinite strip geometry.

Many-body quantum boomerang effect

We study numerically the impact of many-body interactions on the quantum boomerang effect. We consider various cases: weakly interacting bosons, the Tonks-Girardeau gas, and strongly interacting bosons (which may be mapped onto weakly interacting fermions). Numerical simulations are performed using the time-evolving block decimation algorithm, a quasiexact method based on matrix product states. In the case of weakly interacting bosons, we find a partial destruction of the quantum boomerang effect, in agreement with the earlier mean-field study [J. Janarek et al., Phys. Rev. A 102, 013303 (2020)]. For the Tonks-Girardeau gas, we show the presence of the full quantum boomerang effect. For strongly interacting bosons, we observe a partial boomerang effect. We show that the destruction of the quantum boomerang effect is universal and does not depend on the details of the interaction between particles.

Characteristic quantum phase in Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with exchange and single-ion anisotropies.

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram for a spin-one quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with exchange and single-ion anisotropies in an external magnetic field by using the infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm to compute the ground-state fidelity per lattice site. We detect all phase boundaries solely by computing the ground-state fidelity per lattice site, with the prescription that a phase transition point is attributed to a pinch point on the ground-state fidelity surface. Furthermore, the results indicate that a magnetization plateau corresponds to a fidelity plateau on the ground-state fidelity surface, thus offering an alternative route for investigating the magnetization processes of quantum many-body spin systems. We characterize all phases by using the local-order parameter, the spin correlation, the momentum distribution of the spin correlation structure factor, and mutual information as a function of the lattice distance. The commensurate and incommensurate phases are distinguished by the mutual information. In addition, the central charges at criticalities are identified by performing a finite-entanglement scaling analysis. The results show that all phase transitions between spin liquids and magnetization plateaus belong to the Pokrovsky-Talapov universality class.

An optimized infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm for lattice systems

The infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm (iTEBD) provides an efficient way to determine the ground state and dynamics of the quantum lattice systems in the thermodynamic limit. In this paper we suggest an optimized way to take the iTEBD calculation, which takes advantage of additional reduced decompositions to speed up the calculation. The numerical calculations show that for a comparable computation time our method provides more accurate results than the traditional iTEBD, especially for lattice systems with large on-site degrees of freedom.

Dynamical phase transitions in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

We investigate two separate notions of dynamical phase transitions in the two-dimensional nearest-neighbor transverse-field Ising model on a square lattice using matrix product states and a new \textit{hybrid} infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm, where the model is implemented on an infinitely long cylinder with a finite diameter along which periodic boundary conditions are employed. Starting in an ordered initial state, our numerical results suggest that quenches below the dynamical critical point give rise to a ferromagnetic long-time steady state with the Loschmidt return rate exhibiting \textit{anomalous} cusps even when the order parameter never crosses zero. Within the accessible timescales of our numerics, quenches above the dynamical critical point suggest a paramagnetic long-time steady state with the return rate exhibiting \textit{regular} cusps connected to zero crossings of the order parameter. Additionally, our simulations indicate that quenching slightly above the dynamical critical point leads to a coexistence region where both anomalous and regular cusps appear in the return rate. Quenches from the disordered phase further confirm our main conclusions. Our work supports the recent finding that anomalous cusps arise only when local spin excitations are the energetically dominant quasiparticles. Our results are accessible in modern Rydberg experiments.

Quantum dynamics and correlations of indistinguishable anyons in one-dimensional lattices

Anyons, namely particles obeying fractional quantum statistics that interpolate between bosons and fermions, possess a lot of new and exotic physical properties related to the particle exchange statistics. In this work, we explore the few-body quantum dynamics and quantum correlations of indistinguishable anyons with on-site interactions in one-dimensional lattices within the scheme of three-body continuous-time quantum walks. By employing a time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm, we numerically calculate the dynamical evolution process of the local density distribution of anyons among the whole lattice. Numerical simulations shown in the main text mainly focus on a three-body initial state as <inline-formula><tex-math id="M1">\begin{document}$ \left|\psi(t=0)\right>=\hat{a}_{-1}^{\dagger}\hat{a}_{0}^{\dagger}\hat{a}_{1}^{\dagger}\left|0\right>$\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="13-20220188_M1.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="13-20220188_M1.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>, in which three particles are located on neighbouring sites at lattice centre. This choice of initial state features that the three particles influence one another most strongly, while we have also implemented numerical simulations on other choices of three-body initial states as are discussed in appendix. It is shown that the local density distribution of anyons is dramatically altered by fractional particle statistics with new dynamical structure showing up during the time evolution. For free anyons, an inner cone emerges as the statistical parameter increases, while the outer cone remains robust all along. When the on-site interaction joins in, the structure of the inner cone is further modified with new features. Specifically, for interaction of finite strength, an exotic dynamical asymmetry in real space, is clearly demonstrated during the time evolution of the local density distribution for particles within the fractional statistics regime. However, for boson limit and pseudofermion limit, the time evolution of the local density distribution keeps symmetric as the three-body initial state. And remarkably, the dynamical asymmetry is interaction-dependent manifested as the local density distribution of anyons favors opposite side of the lattice for repulsive and attractive interaction, respectively. Moreover, when the on-site interaction is further increased to hard-core limit, the dynamical asymmetry will then be largely suppressed. We also calculate the density-density correlations for anyons before they reach the lattice boundary to reveal the interesting effect of fractional statistics on quantum correlations. It is shown that the inner cone corresponds to co-walking of anyons, while the outer cone is related to individual walking and is immune to the variation of statistical parameter. Furthermore, the exotic real-space asymmetry originated from the interplay of fractional statistics and finite interaction is also shown up in the density-density correlations.

Directed percolation in nonunitary quantum cellular automata

Probabilistic cellular automata (CA) provide a classic framework for studying nonequilibrium statistical physics on lattices. A notable example is the Domany-Kinzel CA, which has been used to investigate the process of directed percolation and the critical dynamics of the nonequilibrium phase transition between absorbing and percolating phases. In this work, we construct a nonunitary quantum CA that generalizes the Domany-Kinzel CA and study the resulting dynamical evolution using numerical simulations using the tensor network infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) algorithm. We demonstrate that the system undergoes the absorbing/percolating phase transition and that the addition of the Hamiltonian generates coherences, which are a distinct feature of quantum dynamics. A proposal for the implementation of the model with Rydberg array is put forward, which does not require local addressing of individual sites.

Multiparticle Quantum Walks and Fisher Information in One-Dimensional Lattices.

Recent experiments on quantum walks (QWs) demonstrated a full control over the statistics-dependent walks of single particles and two particles in one-dimensional lattices. However, little is known about the general characterization of QWs at the many-body level. Here, we rigorously study QWs, Bloch oscillations, and the quantum Fisher information for three indistinguishable bosons and fermions in one-dimensional lattices using a time-evolving block decimation algorithm and many-body perturbation theory. We show that such strongly correlated QWs not only give rise to statistics-and-interaction-dependent ballistic transports of scattering states and of two- and three-body bound states but also allow a quantum enhanced precision measurement of the gravitational force. In contrast to the QWs of the fermions, the QWs of three bosons exhibit strongly correlated Bloch oscillations, which present a surprising time scaling t^{3} of the Fisher information below a characteristic time t_{0} and saturate to the fundamental limit of t^{2} for t>t_{0}.

Nonequilibrium steady state phases of the interacting Aubry-André-Harper model

Here we study the phase diagram of the Aubry-Andre-Harper model in the presence of strong interactions as the strength of the quasiperiodic potential is varied. Previous work has established the existence of many-body localized phase at large potential strength; here, we find a rich phase diagram in the delocalized regime characterized by spin transport and unusual correlations. We calculate the non-equilibrium steady states of a boundary-driven strongly interacting Aubry-Andre-Harper model by employing the time-evolving block decimation algorithm on matrix product density operators. From these steady states, we extract spin transport as a function of system size and quasiperiodic potential strength. This data shows spin transport going from superdiffusive to subdiffusive well before the localization transition; comparing to previous results, we also find that the transport transition is distinct from a transition observed in the speed of operator growth in the model. We also investigate the correlation structure of the steady state and find an unusual oscillation pattern for intermediate values of the potential strength. The unusual spin transport and quantum correlation structure suggest multiple dynamical phases between the much-studied thermal and many-body-localized phases.

Hybrid infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm for long-range multidimensional quantum many-body systems

In recent years, the infinite time-evolution block decimation (iTEBD) method has been demonstrated to be one of the most efficient and powerful numerical schemes for time-evolution in one-dimensional quantum many-body systems. However, a major shortcoming of the method, along with other state-of-the-art algorithms for many-body dynamics, has been their restriction to one spatial dimension. We present an algorithm based on a \textit{hybrid} extension of iTEBD where finite blocks of a chain are first locally time-evolved before an iTEBD-like method combines these processes globally. This in turn permits simulating the dynamics of many-body systems in the thermodynamic limit in $d\geq1$ dimensions including in the presence of long-range interactions. Our work paves the way for simulating the dynamics of many-body phenomena that occur exclusively in higher dimensions, and whose numerical treatments have hitherto been limited to exact diagonalization of small systems, which fundamentally limits a proper investigation of dynamical criticality. We expect the algorithm presented here to be of significant importance to validating and guiding investigations in state-of-the-art ion-trap and ultracold-atom experiments.

Isometric Tensor Network States in Two Dimensions.

Tensor-network states (TNS) are a promising but numerically challenging tool for simulating two-dimensional (2D) quantum many-body problems. We introduce an isometric restriction of the TNS ansatz that allows for highly efficient contraction of the network. We consider two concrete applications using this ansatz. First, we show that a matrix-product state representation of a 2D quantum state can be iteratively transformed into an isometric 2D TNS. Second, we introduce a 2D version of the time-evolving block decimation algorithm for approximating of the ground state of a Hamiltonian as an isometric TNS-which we demonstrate for the 2D transverse field Ising model.

Charge-density-wave melting in the one-dimensional Holstein model

We study the Holstein model of spinless fermions, which at half-filling exhibits a quantum phase transition from a metallic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase to an insulating charge-density-wave (CDW) phase at a critical electron-phonon coupling strength. In our work, we focus on the real-time evolution starting from two different types of initial states that are CDW ordered: (i) ideal CDW states with and without additional phonons in the system and (ii) correlated ground states in the CDW phase. We identify the mechanism for CDW melting in the ensuing real-time dynamics and show that it strongly depends on the type of initial state. We focus on the far-from-equilibrium regime and emphasize the role of electron-phonon coupling rather than dominant electronic correlations, thus complementing a previous study of photo-induced CDW melting [H. Hashimoto and S. Ishihara, Phys. Rev. B 96, 035154 (2017)]. The numerical simulations are performed by means of matrix-product-state based methods with a local basis optimization (LBO). Within these techniques, one rotates the local (bosonic) Hilbert spaces adaptively into an optimized basis that can then be truncated while still maintaining a high precision. In this work, we extend the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm with LBO, previously applied to single-polaron dynamics, to a half-filled system. We demonstrate that in some parameter regimes, a conventional TEBD method without LBO would fail. Furthermore, we introduce and use a ground-state density-matrix renormalization group method for electron-phonon systems using local basis optimization. In our examples, we account for up to $M_{\rm ph} = 40$ bare phonons per site by working with $O(10)$ optimal phonon modes.

Numerical simulation of critical dissipative non-equilibrium quantum systems with an absorbing state

The simulation of out-of-equilibrium dissipative quantum many body systems is a problem of fundamental interest to a number of fields in physics, ranging from condensed matter to cosmology. For unitary systems, tensor network methods have proved successful and extending these to open systems is a natural avenue for study. In particular, an important question concerns the possibility of approximating the critical dynamics of non-equilibrium systems with tensor networks. Here, we investigate this by performing numerical simulations of a paradigmatic quantum non-equilibrium system with an absorbing state: the quantum contact process. We consider the application of matrix product states and the time-evolving block decimation algorithm to simulate the time-evolution of the quantum contact process at criticality. In the Lindblad formalism, we find that the Heisenberg picture can be used to improve the accuracy of simulations over the Schrödinger approach, which can be understood by considering the evolution of operator-space entanglement. Furthermore, we also consider a quantum trajectories approach, which we find can reproduce the expected universal behaviour of key observables for a significantly longer time than direct simulation of the average state. These improved results provide further evidence that the universality class of the quantum contact process is not directed percolation, which is the class of the classical contact process.

Bloch oscillations of multimagnon excitations in a Heisenberg XXZ chain

The studies of multi-magnon excitations will extend our understandings of quantum magnetism and strongly correlated matters. Here, by using the time-evolving block decimation algorithm, we investigate the Bloch oscillations of two-magnon excitations under a gradient magnetic field. Through analyzing the symmetry of the Hamiltonian, we derive a rigorous and universal relation between ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic systems. Under strong interactions, in addition to free-magnon Bloch oscillations, there appear fractional bounded-magnon Bloch oscillations which can be understood by an effective single-particle model. To extract the frequencies of Bloch oscillations and determine the gradient of magnetic field, we respectively calculate the fidelity in the time domain and the sub-standard deviation in the frequency domain. Our study not only explore the interaction-induced Bloch oscillations of multi-magnon excitations, but also provides an alternative approach to determine the gradient of magnetic field via ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Single-excitation correlation dynamics of polar molecules on 1D lattices: driving by external electric fields

Abstract We study a LiCs strongly-interacting 1D molecular lattice system in the Mott insulator regime, allowing one molecule per site prepared in the lowest electronic and vibrational state in presence of a perpendicular electric field. At large intermolecular distance and low filling, the dipole-dipole interaction in the nearest-neighbor approximation governs the dynamics exchange of the two allowed rotational levels, we analyze it for several field strengths. The generated von Neumann entanglement entropy and its monotonically growth in short-term evolutions is shown. The potential of these molecular systems to be used in quantum information protocols is enhanced by the early emergence of a long-range order in the single-particle density matrix correlator throughout the lattice as here we present. Contrary of the widely used two-level approach, our results clearly show that the full four set of internal rotational projections must be taken into account. The numerical simulations are performed by means of the Time-Evolving Block Decimation algorithm based on the Matrix Product State formalism and the Susuki-Trotter decomposition.

Photoinduced charge-order melting dynamics in a one-dimensional interacting Holstein model

Transient quantum dynamics in an interacting fermion-phonon system are investigated. In particular, a charge order (CO) melting after a short optical-pulse irradiation and roles of the quantum phonons on the transient dynamics are focused on. A spinless-fermion model in a one-dimensional chain coupled with local phonons is analyzed numerically. The infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm is adopted as a reliable numerical method for one-dimensional quantum many-body systems. Numerical results for the photoinduced CO melting dynamics without phonons are well interpreted by the soliton picture for the CO domains. This interpretation is confirmed by the numerical simulation for an artificial local excitation and the classical soliton model. In the case of the large phonon frequency corresponding to the antiadiabatic condition, the CO melting is induced by propagations of the polaronic solitons with the renormalized soliton velocity. On the other hand, in the case of the small phonon frequency corresponding to the adiabatic condition, the first stage of the CO melting dynamics occurs due to the energy transfer from the fermionic to phononic systems, and the second stage is brought about by the soliton motions around the bottom of the soliton band. Present analyses provide a standard reference for the photoinduced CO melting dynamics in low-dimensional many-body quantum systems.
