Three-Dimension Grid Plate Effecting in Mandibular Fracture Fixation

Introduction: The mandibular angle fractures in the region of the body represent the highest incidence of fractures in mandibles and therefore deserve special attention and care. The use of three-dimensional plates has shown good results in this type of treatment and use has increased every day. Case Report: The authors describe two cases of mandibular fractures treated with grid miniplate. In case 1, was carried out extra-oral access for fracture reduction in angle. In case 2 was also carried out extra-oral access for fracture reduction in mandibular body. The monitoring showed the surgical success and the absence of postoperative complications. The grid miniplate has shown a great treatment option in cases of fractures of the mandibular body and angle for ease of use and lower rates of postoperative complications. Conclusion: The use of a three-dimensional grid plate has proven to be a viable alternative for the osteosynthesis of mandibular fractures. The results have significant clinical implications and encourage its use.

Simplified inverse distance weighting-immersed boundary method for simulation of fluid-structure interaction

When simulating fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems involving moving objects, the implicit inverse distance weighting-immersed boundary method (IDW-IBM) developed by Du et al. [1] has to construct a large square correlation matrix and solve its inversion at each time step. In this work, a simplified inverse distance weighting-immersed boundary method (SIDW-IBM) is proposed to eliminate the intrinsic limitations in the original implicit IDW-IBM. Through error analysis using Taylor series expansion, a second order approximation can be derived, which allows us to approximate the large square correlation matrix into a diagonal matrix; thereby, we proposed the SIDW-IBM based on this second order approximation to explicitly evaluate the velocity corrections, where the needs to assemble the large correlation matrix and inverse it are circumvented. Owing to the fact that the inverse distance weighting interpolation removes the limitations in the Dirac delta function, the proposed SIDW-IBM has been successfully implemented on the non-uniform meshes to further improve the computational efficiency. The proposed SIDW-IBM is integrated with the reconstructed lattice Boltzmann flux solver (RLBFS) [2] to simulate some classic incompressible viscous flows, including flow past an in-line oscillating cylinder, flow past a heaving airfoil, and flow past a three-dimensional flexible plate. The good agreement between the present results and reference data demonstrates the capability and feasibility of the SIDW-IBM for simulating FSI problems with moving boundaries and large deformations.

Neuro-computing analysis of model-based Casson hybrid nanofluid flow via three-dimensional radiative Riga plate with irregular heat source/sink

In this study, an analysis is conducted on a hybrid nanofluid using the Yamada-Ota and Hamilton-Crosser model in combination with the Casson fluid model. The hybrid nanofluid is analyzed in the context of a three-dimensional radiative Riga plate, which incorporates non-uniform heat source/sink effects. The thermal features and their behavior of the hybridized nanofluid is explored in the current investigation considering the flow over a radiative Riga plate with the impact of space and temperature dependent heat source/sink. The flow and thermal characteristics of the hybridized nanomaterial are presented for the consideration of Yamada-Ota & Hamilton Crosser models. Additionally, the analysis is enhanced by the implementation of Artificial neural network. Further the machine learning approach, a neuro-computing intelligent network is adopted for the computational techniques. The neural networks, which effectively uses the data and make predictions based on their acquired knowledge. The outcomes of the proposed analysis provide the flow behavior of the hybrid nanofluid. The effect of non-uniform heat source/sink of the Casson fluid model contributes to a greater hike in the fluid temperature. Moreover, the neuro-computing intelligent network shows efficient predictions of the involved thermal parameters.

Effects of attentional focus strategies in drop landing biomechanics of individuals with unilateral functional ankle instability.

Functional Ankle Instability (FAI) is a pervasive condition that can emerge following inadequate management of lateral ankle sprains. It is hallmarked by chronic joint instability and a subsequent deterioration in physical performance. The modulation of motor patterns through attentional focus is a well-established concept in the realm of motor learning and performance optimization. However, the precise manner in which attentional focus can rehabilitate or refine movement patterns in individuals with FAI remains to be fully elucidated. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of attentional focus strategies on the biomechanics of single-leg drop landing movements among individuals with FAI. Eighteen males with unilateral FAI were recruited. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected using an infrared three-dimensional motion capture system and force plates. Participants performed single-leg drop landing tasks under no focus (baseline), internal focus (IF), and external focus (EF) conditions. Biomechanical characteristics, including joint angles, ground reaction forces, and leg stiffness, were assessed. A 2 × 3 [side (unstable and stable) × focus (baseline, IF, and EF)] Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (RM-ANOVA) analyzed the effects of attentional focus on biomechanical variables in individuals with FAI. No significant interaction effects were observed in this study. At peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), the knee flexion angle was significantly influenced by attentional focus, with a markedly greater angle under EF compared to IF (p < 0.001). Additionally, at peak vGRF, the ankle joint plantarflexion angle was significantly smaller with EF than with IF (p < 0.001). Significant main effects of focus were found for peak vGRF and the time to reach peak vGRF, with higher peak vGRF values observed under baseline and IF conditions compared to EF (p < 0.001). Participants reached peak vGRF more quickly under IF (p < 0.001). Leg Stiffness (kleg) was significantly higher under IF compared to EF (p = 0.001). IF enhances joint stability in FAI, whereas EF promotes a conservative landing strategy with increased knee flexion, dispersing impact and minimizing joint stress. Integrating these strategies into FAI rehabilitation programs can optimize lower limb biomechanics and reduce the risk of reinjury.

Free vibration analysis and multi-objective robust optimization of three-dimensional pyramidal truss core sandwich plates with interval uncertain parameters

In this study, the free vibration analysis and multi-objective robust optimization of three-dimensional pyramidal truss core sandwich plates with interval uncertain parameters are fulfilled. The numerical model for free vibration of the plate is derived by combining the three-dimensional elasticity theory and Rayleigh-Ritz method, and the validity of the model is illustrated by numerical results. On this basis, considering various uncertainties within the plate, a new uncertainty-propagation analysis method is constructed by integrating the numerical model, interval-analysis model, kriging model and optimization. The one-dimensional and multi-source uncertainty-propagation analysis of the fundamental frequency is finished using this method, and the accuracy is proved by comparing with Monte Carlo simulation results. Meanwhile, to minimize the effects of uncertainties on the performance of plates at the design stage, an objective multi-objective robust optimization model with the objectives of maximizing the fundamental frequency and minimizing the robustness factor is established. Finally, an improved pelican optimization algorithm is proposed by introducing the improved opposition-based learning strategy, tracking strategy with step control and convergence strategy. And the Pareto front and corresponding design schemes applicable to different working environments are obtained without repeating the optimization.

Legendre–Ritz solutions for vibration characteristics of three-dimensional double-layer lattice truss sandwich plates

In this paper, Legendre–Ritz solutions for vibration characteristics of double-layer lattice truss sandwich plates are proposed based on three-dimensional (3-D) elasticity theory. Double-layer lattice truss sandwich plates consist of three face sheets and two cores. The face sheets are composed of fiber-reinforced composites and the cores are composed of pyramidal lattice trusses made of isotropic materials. The pyramidal lattice core is equated to a homogeneous plate according to equivalence principle. Based on 3-D elasticity theory and pseudo excitation method (PEM), each layer's energy expressions of double-layer lattice truss sandwich plates are constructed. After that, Legendre polynomials are adopted to describe displacement components in length, width and thickness directions. On this basis, the Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to solve energy functions to obtain motion equations of double-layer lattice truss sandwich plates. The accuracy and validity of the present method are corroborated by comparisons with references and finite element method (FEM). Additionally, in order to find out effects of relevant parameters on dynamical characteristics of double-layer lattice truss sandwich plates, parametric studies are carried out by means of some numerical examples.

Management of mandibular angle and body fractures using miniplates and 3D plates.

Mandibular angle fractures have the greatest recorded rate of postoperative complications of any mandibular location and hence they present an especially difficult task for surgeons. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the conventional miniplates and three dimensional (3D) plates in management of mandibular angle fracture and body fractures.60 patients with isolated non-comminuted mandibular angle fractures and body fractures were randomly assigned into two groups by lottery. Utilizing Champy's osteosynthesis standards, group one (n = 30) received treatment with 2-mm standard miniplate and group two (n = 30) had treatment with open reduction and internal fixation utilizing 2-mm 3D locking stainless steel plates. The mean operative time was greater in conventional miniplate category as compared to three dimensional plates. Need for postoperative occlusion correction was lesser n 3 dimensional plate category. The incidence of postoperative infection was comparable in both categories. Incidental tooth damage was lesser in three-dimensional plate's category three-dimensional locking plates are an alternate strategy that has a comparable result profile to miniplates.

Clinical results of two different three-dimensional plate types for the treatment of mandibular angle fractures: a retrospective analysis.

The purpose of this study was to compare two different designs of three-dimensional osteosynthesis plates for their suitability in the treatment of mandibular angle fractures in terms of sufficient fracture healing and concomitant complications. Retrospectively a total of 54 patients with 56 mandibular angle fractures were evaluated. Two different types of three-dimensional plates from the Medartis Trilock system were analyzed: (A) Square design plate (☐-plate) with a thickness of 1.0mm, and (B) triangular-shaped 3D-plate (△-plate) with a thickness of 1.3mm. Patient demographics, fracture mechanism and intraoperative details were recorded during an average follow-up period of 1 year. The utilization of △-plates was observed to entail a considerably lengthier surgical time in contrast to ☐-plate systems (P = 0.037). The application of △-plate showed a tendency of higher incidence of major complications than ☐-plate (P = 0.06), as evidenced by the occurrence of non-union in 2 out of 22 cases, resulting in higher surgical revision rate for △-plate (P = 0.027). Sufficient treatment of mandibular angle fractures is feasible by using 1.0mm thick, square shaped three-dimensional plate systems. The use of thicker three-dimensional osteosynthesis plates seems to significantly increase the operating time and complication rates, whereby the geometry of the plate seems to have an influence. The plate design could have an impact on treatment outcomes of mandibular angle fractures. Not applicable.

Peri-Ultrasound Modeling to Investigate the Performance of Different Nonlinear Ultrasonic Techniques for Damage Monitoring in Plate Structures

Abstract Peri-ultrasound modeling which is based on nonlocal peridynamics is found and proven to be effective for modeling nonlinear waves propagating and interacting with damages in structures. This work presents the peri-ultrasound modeling to investigate the performance of three commonly used nonlinear ultrasonic (NLU) techniques—wave mixing, higher harmonic generation (HHG), and sideband peak count-index (or SPC-I) for monitoring damages (or cracks) in three-dimensional (3D) plate structures. Cracks can be defined as “thin cracks” and “thick cracks” according to the horizon size mentioned in peridynamics. Peri-ultrasound modeling results reveal that the SPC-I results are consistent with other reported numerical modeling and experimental results available in the literature. However, the modulation indicator (MI) from the wave mixing model only shows consistent trends for thin cracks but not for thick cracks and its reliability is affected by the initial excitation bandwidth. The relative acoustic nonlinearity factor β from the HHG technique shows consistent trends for thick cracks but not for thin cracks. It can be concluded from the obtained parametric analysis results that the SPC-I technique is more robust and reliable for monitoring damages in engineering structures.

Two Miniplates Versus Three Dimensional Plate in Management of Mandibular Condylar Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Study Design Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Objective This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy of 2 miniplates vs a three-dimensional plate in the management of mandibular condylar fractures. The primary objective was to assess key parameters, including intraoperative time, maximum mouth opening, complications, and functional outcomes, to determine potential differences between the 2 fixation methods. Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies. Inclusion criteria were applied, and the selected studies underwent systematic review. The key parameters were extracted and subjected to meta-analysis to quantify and compare the outcomes associated with the use of 2 miniplates and three-dimensional plates. The methodologies of the included studies were critically evaluated to address potential biases and confounding factors. Results The meta-analysis results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences between the 2 fixation methods in terms of intraoperative time, maximum mouth opening, complications, and functional outcomes. However, concerns were raised regarding the high risk of bias, confounding factors, and considerable heterogeneity observed across the reviewed studies. Conclusions The findings suggest that both 2 miniplates and three-dimensional plates are viable options for the management of mandibular condylar fractures. Despite the lack of statistical significance in the observed differences, the study highlights the need for further prospective research with enhanced methodologies, standardized protocols, larger sample sizes, and reduced bias to refine our understanding and potentially influence clinical management protocols.

Low concentrations of TNF-α invitro transform the phenotype of vascular smooth muscle cells and enhance their survival in a three-dimensional culture system.

Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are commonly used as seed cells in tissue-engineered vascular constructions. However, their variable phenotypes and difficult to control functions pose challenges. This study aimed to overcome these obstacles using a three-dimensional culture system. Calf VSMCs were administered tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) before culturing in two- and three-dimensional well plates and polyglycolic acid (PGA) scaffolds, respectively. The phenotypic markers of VSMCs were detected by immunofluorescence staining and western blotting, and the proliferation and migration abilities of VSMCs were detected by CCK-8, EDU, cell counting, scratch, and Transwell assays. TNF-α rapidly decreased the contractile phenotypic markers and elevated the synthetic phenotypic markers of VSMCs, as well as markedly increasing the proliferation and migration ability of VSMCs under two- and three-dimensional culture conditions. TNF-α can rapidly induce a phenotypic shift in VSMCs and change their viability on PGA scaffolds.

Cueing Dancers to "Externally Rotate From the Hips" Improves Potentially Injurious Ankle Joint Angles and Contact Forces During a Demipointe Ballet Position.

Introduction: The demipointe dance position puts the ankle at high risk of overuse injury and posteromedial ankle pain due to increased ankle valgus forces. Previous work has shown that creating lower limb external rotation intrinsic to demipointe with hip external rotation reduces foot pronation that causes ankle valgus stress. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to examine long axis rotation kinematics of the hip, knee, and ankle as well as the ankle joint contact forces in demipointe to better understand the biomechanical impact(s) of the specific cue to increase hip external rotation in this position. Methods: Three-dimensional motion capture and force plate data were collected from 23 contemporary or ballet pre-professional dancers (age: 19.94 ± 1.34 years) who each performed 3 dancer-selected (DS) demipointe positions and 3 demipointes with the cue to "externally rotate from the hips." Results: The cue to increase hip external rotation resulted in significantly increased hip external rotation angle [DS: 37.5; 9.42° (median; interquartile range), Cued: 39.9; 10.8°, P < .0001)] and significantly reduced ankle eversion angle (DS: 8.13; 11.4°, Cued: 7.77; 10.3°, P = .023). However, total turnout angle was also significantly decreased (DS: 75.8; 7.91°, Cued: 75.4; 7.73°, P < .0001), which is undesirable for proper esthetic performance of demipointe. Total ankle joint force remained unchanged, but ankle eversion force was significantly reduced (DS: 15.3; 4.18 %bodyweight (BW), Cued: 14.7; 4.99 %BW, P < .0001) with use of the cue. Discussion/Conclusion: Utilization of a cue to increase hip external rotation was successful in increasing hip contribution to turnout angle and reducing injurious ankle eversion force. Further coaching using this cue may allow dancers to produce these advantageous mechanics while maintaining turnout angle.

Acute effects of negative heel shoes on perceived pain and knee biomechanical characteristics of runners with patellofemoral pain.

To determine the effects of negative heel shoes on perceived pain and knee biomechanical characteristics of runners with patellofemoral pain (PFP) during running. Sixteen runners with PFP ran in negative (-11mm drops) and positive (5mm drops) heel shoes while visual analog scale (VAS) scores, retroreflective markers, and ground reaction force were acquired by applying a 10-cm VAS, infrared motion capture system, and a three-dimensional force plate. Knee moment, patellofemoral joint stress (PFJS), and other biomechanical parameters during the stance phase were calculated based on inverse dynamics and a biomechanical model of the patellofemoral joint. The foot inclination angle, peak PFJS during the stance phase, patellofemoral joint reaction force, knee extension moment, and quadriceps force at the time of peak PFJS of runners with PFP in negative heel shoes were lower than that in positive heel shoes, no significant difference was found in VAS scores, knee flexion angle, patellofemoral contact area, and quadriceps moment arm at the time of peak PFJS. Compared to positive heel shoes, running in negative heel shoes decreases peak PFJS in runners with PFP, which may decrease patellofemoral joint loading, thus reducing the possibility of further development of PFP. Investigation of the film cooling performance of ceramic matrix composites plate with different braided structures

The ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials have been gradually applied in the high temperature components, due to its excellent heat resistance and mechanical performance. The CMC component still need cooling to protect its safe operation in the high temperature environment of aero engine, such as film cooling structure. This study focuses on the influence of braided structure on the film cooling effect over a three-dimensional braided CMC plate. The full-size calculation model reflecting the internal mesoscale structure of CMC plate was established. The thermal properties of fibers and matrix are also introduced in mesoscale. The geometric parameter which is braided angle of braided structure is changed in different models, to analyze its impacts on the comprehensive film cooling effect. The results show that the fiber bundles inside the CMC plate are the main heat transfer channel, due to its relatively higher thermal conductivity. The different braided angles affect the anisotropic thermal conductivity of CMC on the three main directions. There exists an optimal braided angle near 40° that maximizes the heat dissipation effect in the region near the film cooling holes. While in the downstream region away from holes, the influence of braided angle is weak.

Biomechanical response of lower limb joints to lateral wedge insoles

Lateral wedge insole (LWI) is a frequently recommended treatment option for early and midterm stages of medial knee osteoarthritis. However, studies of its effects on the lower limb joints are incomplete and imperfect. The main purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze the response of intervention of LWI on lower-limb joint kinematics, ground reaction forces (GRFs), and centre of pressure (COP). Gait analysis of 16 healthy subjects was conducted. Three-dimensional motion data and force plate measurements were collected in the control (barefoot) and experimental conditions (wearing a pair of assigned shoes with 0, 7, and 10 mm LWIs). Results showed that the peak knee flexion angle was increased by 3.43°, 3.09°, and 3.27° with 0, 7, and 10 mm LWIs, respectively (p < 0.01). The ankle peak dorsiflexion angle was significantly decreased by 3.79°, 2.19°, and 1.66° with 0, 7, and 10 mm LWIs, respectively (p = 0.02). The internal rotation angle was increased by 2.78°, 3.76°, and 4.58° with 0, 7, and 10 mm LWIs, respectively (p < 0.01). The forefoot with LWIs showed highly significantly smaller inversion, eversion, and adduction angles (all p < 0.01). The 1st peak of the vertical GRF (p = 0.016) also increased significantly by a maximum of 0.06 body weight (BW) with LWIs. These results indicated that biomechanical changes and limitations of lateral wedges insole should be analyzed in more detail, possibly leading to new guidelines for the design and application.

Selective near-infrared laser programming for shape-memory polymer–carbon nanotube composite material 4D printing

Abstract Light stimulation can realise the remote control of the deformation of the specific position of 4D printing structure. Shape-memory polymer–carbon nanotube (CNT) composite materials, with outstanding near-infrared photothermal conversion rate and shape-memory ability, is one type of the most popular light responsive smart materials. However, current studies focused on the photothermal effect and shape-memory applications of light-responsive shape-memory polymer composite (SMPC) sheet structures, and there is no research on the photothermal effect in the depth direction of light-responsive SMPC three-dimensional structures. Here, we prepared a UV curable, mechanically robust, and highly deformable shape-memory polymer (IBBA) as the matrix of light responsive SMPC. CNTs were added as photothermal conversion materials. We explore the photothermal effect of near-infrared laser on the surface and depth of IBBA–CNT composites cube. Shape-memory experiments show that different folded shapes can be obtained by selective near-infrared laser programming. Selective near-infrared laser programming three-dimensional movable type plate shows a programming application in depth direction of three-dimensional light-responsive intelligent structure. This research extends the application of near-infrared laser in 4D printing to the depth direction of intelligent structures, which will bring more complex and interesting 4D printing structures in the future.

Three-Dimensional Plate Dynamics in the Framework of Space-Fractional Generalized Thermoelasticity: Theory and Validation

This work aims to study the dynamics of 3D plates under uniform and nonuniform temperature distributions in the framework of the space-fractional generalized thermoelasticity (S-FGT) approach. The quadratic eigenvalue problem is obtained, which means that the thermoelastic damping plays a meaningful role due to the plate’s thermal energy absorption. The plate’s complex frequency spectrum and mode shapes (free ends) under two different temperature distributions are considered for different values of the fractional continua order α and the length scale parameter l. For the first four frequencies, the fractional modes closest to the experimental results and the classical modes are presented with the absolute differences between them. For the nonuniform temperature distribution case, the mode shape analysis is performed assuming that modulus of elasticity, thermal expansion, and specific heat parameters are functions of the temperature. The primary outcomes of the paper can be stated as follows: 1) the S-FGT approach analysis gives more reliable results than the classical (local) theory; 2) the peak point of the out-of-plane mode amplitude is shifted toward the warmed zone; 3) a mode shifting is observed for the uniform temperature distribution in contrast to the nonuniform temperature distribution; 4) the fractional order derivative and length scale parameter depend on temperature, similar to other material properties such as elastic modulus, specific heat, and coefficients of thermal expansion; 5) a decrease in the fractional order is observed, while temperature increases for the fixed length scale parameter. These novelties indicate that the S-FGT approach establishes a new model for analyzing materials under heating, and the results may be beneficial for designing thermal structures.

Design and preliminary evaluation of a low-cost three-dimensional biomechanical force plate

Abstract Objective: The three-dimensional (3D) force plate is a widely used device in biomechanical research, capable of measuring the ground reaction force (GRF) exerted on the sole of the foot. The forces of human joints are calculated by combining GRF with motion capture data. In the field of nursing and rehabilitation, evaluation of joint pressure can inform further therapy. However, its high cost often limits its application to a small population. Therefore, we aimed to design and manufacture a low-cost 3D force plate to address this issue, which will advance the evaluation of joint pressure in nursing practices. Methods: Through mechanical derivation and finite element method simulation, the feasibility of this 3D force plate was tested. We proposed a method based on simulation results to assist in calibration. Furthermore, we collected the GRF data of the author using the 3D force plate designed in this study. Then we imported this GRF data and the data obtained from motion capture into OpenSim. Results: The 3D force plate consisted of two 3D force sensors and a 600 300 mm board. The 3D force plate could measure the 3D reaction force between the sole of a subject’s foot and the ground. The 3D force plate was validated the usability in this study through theoretical calculation and a complete musculoskeletal analysis process. Conclusion: We have completed the design and practicality verification of this low-cost 3D force plate and provided a calibration method based on finite element method simulation assistance. Low-cost 3D force plates can accelerate the popularization and application of musculoskeletal analysis in the field of nursing and rehabilitation, which is helpful for precision health.
